In need of rodent care advice? ask away!
Hi! I have a lot of experience as an owner to hamsters (I've had every captive species as an adult except chinese hamsters), mongolian gerbils, mice, and african pigmy dormice. I have breeding or rescue litter experience with winter white hybrids, campbell's russian dwarf hybrids, african pygmy dormice, mice, and just began breeding syrians. I am well versed in USA minimums and care standards for each of these species, and especially for mice I take a very science oriented care route. Feel free to send an ask if you have questions about care, supplies, diet, health, etc with these species! If you ask about a sick pet, depending on the issue it will likely need vet help, I'm also happy to help you locate a vet nearby that sees the species you have!
While my blog is primarily focused on my special interest of vintage hamster cages, I give up to date advice backed by science and fully with the belief that each individual animal is different, and finding what works for one may not work for another. I also am understanding of the state the US is in, and as long as you are providing at least laboratory minimums I do not think you are abusive. While a 10 gallon tank isn't considered a pet standard ethical for a hamster, scientifically it IS ethical, and if you are unable to provide larger for some reason (parents won't let you, cannot afford a larger enclosure atm, etc) it is important to instead offer as much enrichment as possible. I will always educate on what is recommended by pet keepers, but will also give situation specific advice as long as you give me as much info to work with as possible!
Please remain civil in reply to any ask where an owner is unable to provide all that the pet community wants to require, driving owners further away from the community only makes it harder to educate.

I keep seeing posts on Reddit and TikTok about people recounting their small rodent pet’s horrifying deaths and all I have to say is what the fuck is wrong with you.

Another gerbil died & I’m really not having a good time about it. I’m taking him in to the university for a necropsy.
These gerbils came from a really shitty situation. Two gerbils who bred out of control and then they ended up with 30 gerbils in a 20 gallon tank. Definitely super inbred, two were dead in the tank when they were picked up off craigslist. So I’m suspecting a genetic issue.
But I want to be sure. I’m paranoid it’s husbandry related but I use the same bedding, the same base diet, the same toys and tanks and everything with all my other rodents and only the gerbils from this group are dying. I’ve reached out to the other homes who took in gerbils from this group to see if they’ve had any deaths, and will of course give them the results of the necropsy.
God. I don’t know what’s happening. I really hope it’s not my fault.

A few people had referred to Solaris as Eclipse's father in comments. And I know people think of them as male since Mephiles used male pronouns in the game. But I'm constantly thinking absolutely not, they are his soccer mom who is in denial about being a new mom
YES... Solaris is the perfect embodiment of the mommy in those stereotypical "mommy issues vs daddy issues" memes, and HOLD ON I just had a thought as to why. So, when I think of a single father trying to be a good dad and struggling, I picture them being neglectful; when I think of a single mother trying to be a good mom and struggling, I picture them as being overbearing. From Eclipse's side of things, it probably seems more like the latter.

Care pkmn Fairy type Ability: Healer/Cute CharmThey live in deep burrows in the desert to avoid the daytime heat. Their keen senses allow them to detect people or pokémons in trouble to heal them. 🐁❤️ I made this design for Valentine's Day back in 2016 and I wanted to give it a much deserved refresh. Old version is included too!

Germaphobia anon: i decided against cresties because of the insect thing ((i also have an insect phobia)) my second choice was gerbils, so i might end up with some of those
Hi, @release-the-hound here!
Gerbils are a great choice. Since they're a desert species, they produce less waste than a lot similar animals.
You'll have to clean their tanks about every 2 weeks, but beyond that nothing sticks out in mind mind as particularly triggering for germaphobia.
This little guide by the BC SPCA is an easy intro to their care requirements. Be sure to check out the other resources at the end of the pamphlet for more specific and in-depth information!
