Homemade Hamster Food 🐹

Why would you want to make homemade hamster food?

A lot of commercial hamster mixes are SUPER processed. Pellet food is often made of difficult to digest ingredients like soy and pea husks.

These don't fill your hamster up, aren't nutritiously satisfying, and pellets are often coated in artificial flavors or molasses to make them more appealing to your hamster.

Hamsters can be picky eaters and you may see them stuffing themselves on seeds and leaving the pellets. Pellet mixes are often proposed BECAUSE of this very issue as, being nutritionally balanced, they ensure your hamster doesn't selectively intake nutrients. Yet often the hamster leaves the pellets becayse they make them feel sick.

The solution is to ensure your hamster gets nutrition some other way. In the wild they eat whole grains and seeds and even insects. Fruit should be given sparingly as a treat.

This mix includes:

pot barley

millet

buckwheat

pinhead oats

hemp seeds

alfalfa seeds

golden linseed

mealworms

sunflower seeds

pine kernels (sparingly)

I was really pleased with this as it worked out better than going to the pet store in terms of price. I used a local grocery store, and I'd also rather support them than buy from more commercial sources. But as a result I wound up with a lot of brown paper bags of leftover ingredients, though luckily, they're non perishable.

Hamsters need protein too! Insects are how they would gain this naturally.

Seeds and nuts should be given more sparingly as they are high in fat. For a much clearer guide than what I can write, this website does the job amazingly.

Winter white dwarf hamster (Phodopus sungorus)

It has a dark grey dorsal stripe and furry feet. In winter the dark fur is almost entirely replaced with white fur. This adaptation helps them to evade predators in the snow-covered steppes. In captivity, this does not usually happen. The length is 7–9 cm. Body weight changes dramatically throughout the year, from 19 to 45 g.

The hamster digs tunnels one meter deep leading to ground burrows, most of them have six entrances. To keep the burrow warm in the winter, the hamster closes all but one entrance and lines the burrows with animal fur or wool.

They are common as pets and are known to be one of the most tameable types of hamsters. Out of hamsters kept commonly as pets, only Campbell's dwarf hamster and the winter white dwarf hamster are able to interbreed and produce live hybrid offspring.

Roborovski hamster (Phodopus roborovskii)

Distinguishing characteristics of the Roborovskis are eyebrow-like white spots and the lack of any dorsal stripe.

They are found in desert regions, averaging at 4.8 cm and 12–24 g. They inhabit areas of loose sand and sparse vegetation and live at elevations of around 1,200–1,450 meters. They dig and live in burrows with steep tunnels as deep as six feet underground. In the wild they are most active at dawn and dusk.

They are omnivorous; primarily eat grains, vegetables, fruit, and plants, but they will also eat meat and insects when present. Roborovski hamsters remain underground in winter and survive in that season by stockpiling food and storing it in special food chambers within their burrow system.

Currently, 10 variations of Roborovski hamsters are thought to exist. They have become increasingly popular as pets in recent years.

This morning i brought my dwarf hamster to the vet, she looked.. off, i cant really explain, but as pet owners, sometimes you just know something's off with your pet.

BB8 is a 1 year old Roborowski's dwarf hamster. I bought her in a home depot-like shop here in germany, the only place that sells living animals within 50 km.

The vet told me she probably has kidney problems and gave her an injection, but told me, very kindly, that 1 year for a pet shop hamster is already a really good age, and that i shouldn't expect her to live for a lot more than a few more months at best.

Wasn't expecting that. My last (russian dwarf) hamster lived for 4,5 years. I thought BB and I had at least one or two more years together. It's sad. The vet said these pet shop hamsters are 'mass produced' and terribly inbred, so it's not surprising that the quality of life and life expectancy go down.

Looks like 2022 is the year of animal losses in my life.

She's still here for now, and I'll do everything I can to keep her comfortable and healthy.
