"Geology is 90% vocabulary" feels like such a poor description of such a large, important topic, but it feels like it would solve so much if people just... had the words to describe the world.
It's so unfair to everyone that the majority of the population's understanding of the world stops at "tectonic plates", "ring of fire", and "rock cycle". It's so unfair.
Everyone deserves to go on a hike, and when the rock changes colors, wonder "what is that?" and be able to answer the question themselves. Everyone deserves to be able to fulfill their curiosity and it is such a disservice that they cannot.

The Beast of Magma, with its augite crystal claws and teeth, is always trying to find a way to the surface. Another beastie for my geology monsters project! This creature is based on eruptible magma, I may make another of more 'dormant' magma that's kinda just hanging out in the subsurface, we'll see! Painted with acrylic inks.

Lt. Commander Killian: So what was your name again?
Nevularxi: I have not already told you. I’m afraid my name may not translate into your language.
Lt. Commander Killian: Oh yeah?
Nevularxi: I am named for a period of time on my home planet that surrounds the immediate aftermath of the second yearly equinox of our planet’s solar star. It’s the period following our fertile rainy season, and marked the beginning of the harvest in years of antiquity, as well as the coming of the colder, darker season which our species typically spends in isolation or hibernation. The period is considered to be a time of great liminality and spiritual importance in our ancient religions, although since the dawn of the modern technological age it has lost some of its transient meaning.
Lt. Commander Killian: …Okay, but i meant more like. how do I say your name.
Nevularxi: Oh, it’s nev-you-LARK-zee.
Lt. Commander Killian: Gotcha. by the way, your name in english is October.

out of curiosity and inspired by a talk i had with my bf. what would be the subject you'd want to get a degree in/study seriously the LEAST.
Assume that for all of these, you'd actually have decent classes and professors etc. and admission, location, future income and things like that would not be an issue, it's just about interests and talent. But you would have to try and get decent grades or at least pass and possibly do something with that degree afterwards.
(I can't possibly add EVERY kind of subject obviously so sorry if i missed an obvious one or grouped them in weird ways)

How much outdoor experience did you have BEFORE choosing Geoscience as a major? Poll Results and Analysis
Tumblr media
Despite total response at 67 people, I think the curve is very interesting. Traveling and being outdoors does seem to be a reason people choose geology.
If I could run the poll again with a larger sample size, I would include Year of Graduation (if possible), to see if there are changing trends over time, and also a Rural Travel/Rural Non-Travel to see if there are specific trends within Rural community responders.
-=- Discussion -=-
Geoscience programs show declining enrollment across the world and many smaller programs have closed due to that lack of enrollment.
I argue from the poll results that this trend might reflect larger cultural trends. The people who choose geoscience are driven by curiosity in the differences of the world around them. Exposure to those differences is enhanced by Travel, second only to the outdoors being readily available in rural areas.
Yet in America at least, travel is often cost-prohibitive except to Middle Class to Upper-Middle Class families. I propose that the decline of geoscience as a major might be connected to a decline in outdoor exposure, whether than be in time available to go hiking, outdoor access, travel being cost-prohibitive, school field trip funding, or suburban areas.
-=- Description of Options Given -=-
Not a lot (grew up in the suburbs/city; no hiking)
Urban Exposure (grew up in the suburbs/city; outdoors a lot)
Travel Exposure (grew up in the suburbs/city; traveled and was outdoors a lot)
Rural Exposure (grew up in a smaller city/town; outdoors a lot)
Familial Exposure (urban or rural community; family member was in geosci)
Familial and Natural Exposure (Lots of outdoor experience with family member in geosci)

Fluorite from the Milky Way Pocket of the Diana Maria Mine in Weardale, England
This fluorite is daylight fluorescent, meaning it changes color in the sun! The part that looks blue in this picture is actually a deep green in indoor lighting.
