"Hunting used to be a really big part of Air Nomad culture," Aang says, as he gently slides down a snowy slope. Katara is fast behind him, mirroring his movements but not completely; there is little rhythm in his movements, as he is erratic, suddenly moving this way and that, as changing as a wind.
Her movements are more fluid. The tide moves as it will, and so does she, practiced and steady, and when there is a sudden build up of power, it is nonetheless gradual.
They land. "I'm not surprised," she says. She looks up across the vast snowy tundra of the south pole. Above them is the blue sky, seemingly endless and a flat calm. Beyond them is ice and snow; water frozen, and water that has joined the sky to fall down for a time.
It is neither the open ocean or falling rain, and it is not mountains so high they are part of the sky. Here, one might think Water and Air have met together, to share community.
She closes her eyes. She wonders if, before the war, there had been close friendship between the nomads of the Southern Air Temple and the people of her tribe. They were close, certainly, in geography. Air and water were more alike than they were different, but they were different all the same.
There are few records of those days. Her tribes oral histories are scattered and fading, and his people's writings are mostly gone from the public eye. She supposes she will never know.
"It's hard," she says. "To survive in places like this without eating meat. Things are hard to grow."
"We did find crops, or I think we might have made them," Aang says. "But yeah. We did hunt. We were nomads, after all. Nomads have to hunt to live well."
The past tense wounds. It always did. She suspects it always will.
"So what changed?"
He shrugs. "Philosophies change, and its part of flying; to become like the wind you have to let go of things, and different gurus thought that it would be easier to detach yourself by removing yourself from the cycle of the hunt."
She considers it. "Life and death and rebirth. Death that feeds others, so things live a while after killing things to live, and when they die, other things will live because they are gone."
"Yeah. The cycle of the world." Aang looks solemnly across the landscape. "It's not that hunting is wrong. At least that's what I understood. Some things must die for other things to live. We kill plants when we eat them. So gurus suggested that by removing yourself from earthly tethers, letting go of them as you let go of fear or the illusion of control, you free yourself."
Katara contemplates this for a time. "Maybe that's part of the nature of air. Air is all around us, and its outside us and above us. You need air to live, but its always apart from you; blood is an ocean inside you, but when you breath in and out, the nature of air isn't really different."
"It may be so," Aang agreed, and his tone says that he will think on this for a time. "Air, by its nature, yearns for separation that humans can try, even if we can't really do it?"
"It may be so," Katara agreed. It was neither yes, or no, but a question unto itself. It didn't need to have an answer. But thinking about it WAS the answer.

Words borrowed from other languages in English
Very incomplete list, based mostly on The Languages of the World (3rd ed.), Kenneth Katzner, 2002 + a heavy use of Wiktionary. some notes:
Many of these words have passed through multiple languages on their way to English (e.g. Persian -> Arabic -> Spanish -> French -> English); in that case I usually list them under the first language that used them in the same acception as English.
I generally don't include words whose ancestors already existed in Middle English, unless their origin was exotic enough to be interesting.
The vast majority of borrowings are terms very specific to their culture of origin; I generally only include those that are either very well known amng English-speakers, or of general use outside that culture.

I love the fact that youre interested in Skandinavian music!! - but please, as a Finn, Finland is not a part of Skandinavia 🙏 i get that people just group us with Skandis but we are not part of them!! Maybe just say "nordics/nordic countries", that’s always correct! :) also - which finnish prog band are you interested in?? I love that youre into our music 💙
thank you, I'd probably never notice the mistake XD honestly I never heard anyone who said it's not a part, anyways I'm gonna change it on my last post
also it's so cool to meet you!!!!
I thank my father, a literal geography guru, for my silly little interest- he's a huge fan of Finnish tango 😌
I'm fascinated of your language, yes I tried to at least learn some simple vocabs but it's impossible
^ they're like the ideal band imo, the songs are EXTREMELY GOOD and this one is my favourite, although I'm really sad that they don't sing in their native language (I would prefer Finnish honestly, the language sounds stunning in songs -UNLIKE GERMAN)
they're connected with a 60s soul/jazzy kinda band called Soulset
//
two prog/jazz fusion epics, isn't it amazing 😭 I love Nordic experimental music, they were innovative, had a fresh sound, the musicians' instruments sound just fine as hell 👌🏻🛐 I have a weakness for saxophones in prog
I think they're one of the obscure Finnish groups
it's now a year ago since I discovered Wigwam, which is probably the most popular Finnish jazz fusion kinda group?
in my bio is a link to my Spotify acc, there I created a playlist for favourite songs of your country...
thanks, again 🤍💙

Argh! My guru just enjoined me to post something about Duroc for his birthday, and all i have at hand is my book about the Russian campaign!
Here are three minuscule tidbits:
Before the start of the campaign, page 92:
"most of Napoleon's entourage, beginning with Caulaincourt and including close friends and collaborators such as General Duroc, repeatedly beseeched him not to go down the road of war. (...) Napoléon dismissed such arguments with annoyance."
Yeah, what did Caulaincourt, for one, who had lived in Russia for four years, know about Russian climate and geography? But back to Duroc.
Page 196: While in Vitebsk (in August? Not sure, but this was even before Smolensk), Baron Fain notes
" 'anxiety and discouragement' in the various staffs. Napoléon sensed this, and for the first time he drew a wider group of generals into his confidence, asking them what they thought should be done. Berthier, Caulaincourt, Duroc and others felt it was time to call a halt. They cited losses, provisions difficulties and the length of the lines of communication, and expressed the fear that even a victory would cost them dear,on account of the lack of hospitals and medical resources."
We know how much Napoléon listened to Berthier, Caulaincourt and Duroc, who turned out to be right on all counts.
Finally, on pages 221 and 222, about the conditions in hospitals at Smolensk, the lack of medical supplies, and what Napoléon tried to do about this:
"Surgeons were sewing up wounds with tow in lieu of thread, and dressing them with strips torn from their own uniforms and paper taken from the city archives. 'Without medicines, without broth, without bread, without linen, without lint and even without straw, they had no other consolation as they lay dying other than the sympathy of their comrades,' in the words of General Berthezene. Napoléon sent Duroc around the hospitals to give the wounded money, but while in Austria or Italy this would have meant they would have been able to procure food and other necessities for themselves, here they would be able to buy nothing, while the possession of the coins made them vulnerable to robbery and murder."
And that's all I have for now. Not much about Duroc himself, I'm afraid, except to demonstrate that his wise advice was just as unsuccessful as Caulaincourt's and Berthier's.
This has been drawn from Adam Zamoyski's 2004 book, Moscow 1812: Napoleon's Fatal March.

Mahayana, Theravada and Zen
There is a lot of confusion in the West about Buddhism. Many think it is is a ‘one big tent religion’ in where what is said in the Pali Suttas goes for Zen as well. Many westerners ignorantly bounce around the Pali Suttas and the Mahayana sutras without realizing that these are two distinct schools of Buddhism that have radically different philosophical views and religious direction.
Here is a list of the differences.
Mahayanism is a school of Buddhism that is said to develop around the 1st century and was considered at that time as the completion of the bhikkhu training for Full Enlightenment. I posted a while back a research article that during the Chinese pilgrimages to South Asia, the Theravada and Mahayana monks lived in the same temples, ate the same foods, slept in the same halls. Though when the pilgrimages stopped around the 6th century, Mahayanism became the dominate sectarian teaching in China, even creating its own version of the Vinaya over time to suit the region and geography.
Zen (Ch’an) is a subset branch of Mahayanism and in the past did have its own specially schools and temples. Today in China, Ch’an and Pureland Buddhism are fully integrated to form Chinese Mahayanism.
Tibetan religion is Mahayanism with the four distinct schools, namely Nyingma (c. 8th century), Kagyu (11th century), Sakya (1073), and Gelug (1409). Dzogchen, the Tibetan Zen school is part of the  Nyingma school, and this is the Padmasambhava Guru rinpoche teachings.
Zen absolutely considers itself a part of the Mahayana family. Does this mean you have to join a religion to study Zen? Absolutely not. Just as people can study the Christian Bible without having to be a Christian (believer), people study Zen without being religious – this however is not to imply that Zen or Christianity is non-religious.
Buddhism does not deny the existence of any gods, though does deny that they play any special role. Buddhism and Zen does engage in Filial Piety (honoring of the ancestors of the Dharma) yet rejects Religious piety in that one has to go to a church or attain certain rites or perform any particular ceremony. This is different than Western Religious views that create tribalism around a genealogy of a people, later around a dogmatic beliefs, and finally around favoritism of theologians (Calvinism for example).
To say that Zen is not Religious is a mistaken view, though to say that Zen is different than Western religious views is true. Zen certainly has its theologians, and those theologians do have a following that  forms reverent tribes around chosen favorite theologians (Lately Dogenism for example, or earlier Rinzai).

The Ura Yakchoe Festival: Revealing the Cultural Face of Bhutan
Tumblr media
A must-see for travelers considering Bhutan tour packages is the Ura Yakchoe Festival, which provides a singular chance to experience the depth of the nation's culture firsthand.
Nestled between towering mountains and verdant valleys in Bhutan's calm and breathtaking surroundings is a festival known as the Ura Yakchoe Festival that defies time and geography. With its rich spiritual, historical, and cultural background, Bhutanese people have a particular place in their hearts for this celebration.
A View Into The Culture of Bhutan
Tumblr media
Bhutan, often known as the "Land of the Thunder Dragon," is well known for its dedication to maintaining its distinct cultural legacy and customs. Bhutan is still very much entrenched in its ancient customs, ceremonies, and beliefs despite its lack of modernization. The Ura Yakchoe Festival, held yearly in the scenic Ura Valley, is one of the most engaging displays of Bhutanese culture.
A festival in the serene valleys of Bhutan that embodies the essence of the nation's rich cultural heritage.
The Ura Yakchoe Festival's History
Tumblr media
The Ura Yakchoe Festival has storied, mythical beginnings that stretch back millennia. Local legend holds that the celebration was started by the well-known Buddhist saint, Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche.
It is thought that in the area surrounding the Ura Valley, Guru Rinpoche hid holy artifacts, or terma, bestowing blessings upon the land and its people. The venerated statue of Guru Rinpoche, which is supposed to have appeared miraculously from a sacred wooden pillar, is the focal point of the celebration.
Ceremony & Customs
Tumblr media
The Ura Yakchoe Festival is a vibrant display of religious devotion, cultural rituals, and social peace. The festivities, which typically span several days, are filled with numerous rituals, dances, prayers, and customs.
The revelation of the sacred thongdrol, or gigantic thangka, featuring Guru Rinpoche, is the most revered tradition of the celebration. It is believed that those who watch the thongdrol being unveiled would get blessings and purification, making it a very auspicious event.
