There is localisation discourse again.
And I fucking hate it every time.
You can't translate anything literally.
That's not how language works.
Language specific idioms, tone and voice alone make such a difference.
More than that, however, there is often an aspect to this all that I think I haven't talked about much I think:
This kind of criticism often comes from people who are monolingual.
Aside from my native language, I know a good amount of English and German and a little bit of Latin, Russian and Japanese.
I have translated a bunch of text. I've studied a bunch of languages.
You can't even literally translate simple adverts, much less full blown prose without it sounding like an awkward mess.
The biggest criticism for my work I've recieved is ending up with a too literal of a translation with awkward sentence structures.
This is very typical beginner struggles and if you're in the know even just a little bit, you immediately recognise people who aren't.
These people straight-up do not know what they're talking about yet claim legitimacy.
It's the worst.
You're not an authority on language by putting a sentence in Google Translate and claiming the localisation is bad because what comes out is different from the official translation.
Gain some self-awareness and context.
Even I, knowing at least a little bit of all of these languages, will not claim to be any authority because I've barely studied several of them and simple study and having knowledge about a language and translation are also two very different aspects of language learning.
This wave of internet anti-art anti-intellectualism is equal parts horrifying and fascinating to me.
Because randoms will claim they know better than an artist, a professional translator, a professional writer or any creative person who has honed their craft for years, if not decades, with full arrogant confidence and nothing else to back it up and will have a bunch of other randoms yes-manning them.
And it's not like professionals can't err, but I think consideration should be given to those who earnestly put in the work.
Honestly, I think this extends to a lot of science professions, too.
This is the era of people thinking they know everything because "it feels right" and that can be really dangerous depending on the subject.
And this is actually a very familiar feeling to me – there was an unspoken arrogance born of ignorance to me for a time when I first entered university.
I'm really glad I at least gained the understanding I could feel this way and self-awareness about it and through it also a more careful attitude when talking about anything I might not actually be fully knowledgeable on, but as I said, I also think it is fascinating to me how a internet minority has popped up completely stuck in that attitude.
And I think this I can actually connect to Trump because that's exactly what he is doing. He sprouts shit that "feels right" and makes people that follow him happy, but also falls to pieces at any kind of closer inspection, while also promoting not doing any closer inspection and just being a cult.

I think the one good thing that comes out of this fandom being non existent is that there’s no wild misinterpretations of the characters cause there’s not enough idiots going around

I'm not dead.
I've been trying to get back into the swing of things. To my new followers, hello! I'm a fallout fanfic writer by day, overnight warehouse worker by night, and I'm studying to be an editor.
General life updates below the cut, but long story short, life's a little difficult at the moment and I'm thinking of writing something fun for you guys to read.
For those of you that give a hoot, my English grammar studies fell off a little bit after the holidays and a week-long vacation that I spent doing a lot of gardening. (Very happy with the gardening btw.)
However, on top of having to pay out $550 in taxes, my grandmother informing me that the exercise bike she gave me is going to cost me $250, attempting to pay off two credit cards, and buying gardening supplies and flowers, my parttime status is... getting questionable? Plus, the week-long vacation was nice and all, but we took a pay cut from that because we usually get more than 8 hours every night. Since we didn't work those days, we got 8 hour pay instead of our usual 9-11 hour pay. (We work 'til the job is done, however long that takes.)
As every day goes by, I am reminded again and again why I want to work for myself and why I am beginning to hate America. Rumors going around that the government is attempting to restrict or even ban at-home food gardening, I've just decided to stick to flowers in the flower bed and maybe two new trees and skip the tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli, etc. that I planned to plant this year. Financially, it's probably for the best anyways.
SO. I'm thinking about writing a little somethin'-somethin' to entertain myself and you guys. It'll also help me get back into a good writing routine.
I'm practicing better self-care, too. Drinking iced lemon water, cutting back on the coffee and energy drinks, washing my face more regularly, moisturizing my hands, feet, and face, and going to bed and getting up at the same times every day. Anyone who knows how difficult self-care is with ADHD, I salute you. It's hard. I have to compromise with myself just to take a shower most days.
Good tips on staying motivational in order to get some studying done would be appreciated. I hope you're all doing well. Feel free to message me if anyone ever needs someone to talk to, shit's hard out here. Keep on keepin' on.

merlin is an experience bc when you start watching it you think, "this is a funny show, it's relatively light-hearted with a nice undercurrent of drama!" and as you keep watching and it gets more depressing with every passing episode you retreat into yourself and when you watch season 4 you can feel your soul shrivel up and die and by the time you reach early-mid season 5 the episodes are literally painful to sit through and you start wondering what you did in your life to deserve this. and still there are genuinely funny moments each episode, like little rewards for sitting through 40 minutes of characters riding full-speed to their dooms and you think that this can't possibly be the same show you started watching but then you realise it was actually always horrifying, you just can't ignore that fact any longer. i am changed.

ngl, I'm beginning to take issue with how in conversations about anti-intellectualism almost automatically, the face of girls and women will be slapped on the problem.

anyway in the past week the irish government has voted down two motions which would have condemned the genocide in gaza.
i need everyone to stop lionising ireland as if its not also a european government with strong ties to the us. american weapons pass through shannon airport and will continue to, because yesterday the motion to stop that was voted down 83 to 50.
other governments have done much more but somehow people still act as though ireland is the ultimate palestinian ally and exempt from criticism on its handling of palestine bc it was once colonised, even though that past experience clearly isnt being taken into account by the irish government when creating policy.
i live here i know there’s a lot of public support and sympathy for palestine, which is great, but that isnt reflected in government, and i think ireland should be treated like other countries whose governments have done nothing.

My Medium Publications ~ The Year 2022 in Review
I began publishing content on Medium.com back in 2014, initially because this platform accepted republished content. But as my following grew I began to publish both original and republished content; and also created Medium publications. The publications give your content more exposure and are ret to meeting and collaborating with fellow writers. To day I am publishing 3 different publications:…

AI as it is right now fucking sucks, but I think a lot of people who champion for regulation/bans don't explicitly say and explain why it is so bad beyond the basics.
Naturally, art is for expressing perspectives and communication with the audience, an emotional and intellectual reaction.
This gets lost when said media is directly created something based on media that already exists and thus perspectives of authors that already exist.
Nothing new can come out of a system that is solely based on stuff that already exists.
So far, so good.
The argument is that *everything* is based on something that already exists and always has been.
But this is actually not true.
The human mind can come up with new stuff based on old stuff, but an AI can only copy what it is given in its system.
A human mind can reach a different conclusion based on the same information, so any new piece of media that it doesn't look to directly copy, to plagarise will be different and new in major and minor ways even if the foundations might be the same.
This is the critical element I think a lot of people don't mention. AI can only copy what it is given. The human mind can copy and still have something different and new come out of it.
A new consistent art style. A new system of thinking. Lyrics that express ideas in new ways.
Yes, this stuff is often with a foundation, like the limited number of types of stories that can be told, certain chord progressions, certain aspects of an art style.
Inspiration is not copying because something new and different still crops up from it; a different person with a different extent of experience and a different life journey is making it.
AI art can have no delibrate artistic choices because all it can do is copy what it is fed.
There can be no new art styles that aren't strange, inconsistent mush of already existing art styles.
There can be no new styles of writing that aren't a direct mash-up of the style of writers that already exist.
Tolkien absolutely has a very different writing style from George R. R. Martin just because they are writers that are active, who are from different nations and different time periods.
Any story using Shakespeare speak will never truly be able to copy it because, guess what, it is from an author that revolutionised language. Shakespeare literally came up with new words.
So the only way to emulate Shakespeare is to come up with entirely new words emulating his style of writing.
"Everything has existed before" only works in very broad strokes.
It's a perspective that is really easy to use by people who don't want to put in any of the actual effort or time that it takes to make art.
They don't want to open Word and just write or get a free art program on their phone and practice, but they want the praise and they want the attention they see artists get.
It's the strongest, most slavish dedication to laziness you can get.

this year my challenge for everyone is to unlearn the association between love and morality. love is not something that is inherently morally good, and the absence of love is not something that is inherently bad. sex without love isn't morally bankrupt, it's just an action. people without love aren't less kind or less good, they're just people. when we can get past this false (and often unnoticed) dichotomy of good love/evil lovelessness then i think we are going to be able to take leaps and bounds in sex positivity, aro advocacy, certain discussions of mental health...
#and also. not the direct focus. but love doesn't make things good. you can be in love and do terrible terrible things.#people do bad things in the name of love and in despite of love all the time.#but!! imagine a world where people could exist as people and not be demonized.#sex positivity means being cool about All sex. reexamine your internal systems of moral judgement.#this goes for sex workers. for aroallo people. especially aroallo men. for aro people in general who might enjoy sex.#and frankly i think it can easily bleed into discussions about mental health disorders around 'not feeling' certain things#especially demonizing ppl who don't feel as much empathy. i think there's definitely a correlation between that and the emphasis on love.#our support needs to go out to Everybody and i think these things are all structured together in one way or another!!#it might not be immediately obvious but when i tell you it all leads back to amatonormativity..... little bit wild.... large bit wild....#anyway. horror movie psychopath 'oh he can't feel emotions or love' damn alright. well. let's take a closer look at that.#silly that there's an association between lack of love and Murdering. feel like that might affect some stuff.#love is just an emotion/a feeling it doesn't mean anything about you one way or another#same with empathy. you can feel it all you want but it doesn't inherently change the actions you choose to take#anyway. thesis statement. there is a socially constructed link between love and morality. unlearn that.#kiss kiss (<— lovelessly)#aromantic#aromanticism#arospec#talking#aroace#aspec#sex positivity

General life update:
Work sucks, and I'm very tired. I pull 10 to 12 hour shifts 5 days a week, and I'm dead on my feet for my two days off, still having to juggle chores and appointments and spending time with the hubby.
BUT guess what I'm doing right now. I'M WRITING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN TWO MONTHS. I'm so happy, but I don't want to jump the gun just yet and say that regular updates are coming because at any point in time, my neurodivergency can be a volatile mix with my job.
Also, a huge thank you to everyone who is voting on my fanfics or sharing my work on Wattpad and Tumblr. I'm thinking of bringing my work to AO3. I don't know anything about the site and would appreciate some pointers if y'all have any.
The last time I moved my work from one site to the other, I was flagged for plagiarism for every freaking chapter. I moved from FF.net to Wattpad, and Wattpad flagged every chapter, and the message said "this looks like it exists somewhere else on the web" or some shit like that, so I had to fight with Wattpad to convince them (or whatever automated system they may have in place) that I was the owner of both. So that's why I haven't expanded since joining Wattpad. I've also been asked recently if I write on Neobook, and I have no idea what that is. (Perhaps I'm just old.)
Anywho, love y'all and I hope you're doing well. ♥
