Statement by the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity on behalf the International Women’s Day 2024, March 8th.
Gender equality benefits us all. Yet achieving it remains one of the greatest human rights challenges of our time. We must invest in women and girls to achieve sustainable development, justice and equity, and to achieve the goals and targets of the Biodiversity Plan. Currently there is a staggering 360 billion USD annual deficit in spending on genderequality measures. The current economic system is exacerbating poverty and inequality and is negatively impacting the environment. This reality disproportionately affects women and other marginalized groups around the world. Shifting towards and investing in a green economy is one of the ways to amplify women’s voices. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, known also as “the Biodiversity Plan” aims to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by 2030 for the benefit of people and planet. Women play critical roles in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, ecosystem restoration and environmental justice. So, as recognized in the Plan, successful implementation will depend on ensuring gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, and on reducing inequalities. A specific target (Target 23) aims to ensure gender equality through a gender-responsive approach, recognizing the equal rights and access to land and natural resources for women and girls, and their full, effective, meaningful, and informed participation and leadership at all levels of action, engagement, policy, and decision-making processes related to biodiversity. The Biodiversity Plan is accompanied by a very ambitious Gender Plan of Action. This sets out concrete actions to be taken by all actors to enable women and girls to fully participate and contribute in implementation. This International Women’s Day, let’s agree to #InvestInWomen – to invest in our future: a gender equal, just and sustainable future.
Statement by the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity on behalf the International Women’s Day 2024, March 8th. "Invest in Women: accelerate progress".

Financing social protection and care systems for the fulfilment of human rights, gender equality and poverty reduction (CSW68 Side Event).
UN Women is convening a high-level panel of diverse leaders for this CSW68 side event to explore how financing social protection and care systems can realize human rights, promote gender equality, and eradicate poverty amidst multiple crises.
Social protection and care systems are recognized as crucial tools to combat poverty (SDG1), ensure universal health coverage (SDG 3), and promote human rights and gender equality (SDG 5). However, cascading crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental emergencies, and conflicts have reversed progress on poverty eradication and gender equality, leaving 1 in 10 women in extreme poverty and triggering a cost-of-living crisis amid a looming debt distress. These shocks are intensified by underlying structural crises in jobs, livelihoods, and care. If current trends continue, by 2030, an estimated 8% of the world's female population – 342.4 million women and girls – will still be living on less than $2.15 a day. Against this backdrop, UN Women's corporate side event will explore how social protection and care systems can advance human rights, gender equality, and poverty eradication. As the world prepares for the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, the event aims to accelerate progress in expanding social protection, strengthening resilience, and integrating social protection with employment and livelihoods. Additionally, this event seeks to bridge thematic linkages between the priority theme of CSW68 'Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing' with a gender perspective and the review theme on 'Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.'

Women in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET): Unlocking Digital Empowerment - CSW68 Side Event.
Recent strategic responses to achieve gender equality, empowerment and poverty alleviation are programs that promote digital literacy and engaging women in entrepreneurial skills building through digital platforms, which included facilitation of access to resources for starting and growing small enterprises. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, 'going digital' was the most practical way to facilitate transfer and movements of information, training, structured lessons, etc.
The proposed side event intends to highlight digital programs for women that are transformative when built within an ecosystem of "business skills building, access to capital, coaching + mentoring and network building."

Launch of the SIGI 2024 SIGI Regional Report for Southeast Asia: Time to care (CSW68 Side Event).
Watch the Launch of the SIGI 2024 SIGI Regional Report for Southeast Asia: Time to care (CSW68 Side Event)!
Care systems in Southeast Asia rely heavily on women's unpaid work. But demographic, educational, and economic shifts are increasing the demand for paid care. What does this mean for women in the region - and what challenges lie ahead? This event will explore the care economy's transformative power to accelerate women's economic empowerment, while strengthening Southeast Asia's resilience to external shocks.
Hosted by Korea, the OECD Development Centre is organising a CSW68 Side-event to launch the SIGI 2024 SIGI Regional Report for Southeast Asia: "Time to Care". The side-event aims to delve into the root causes of gender inequality in Southeast Asia and explore potential solutions, particularly in formalising the care sector.
The SIGI 2024 SIGI Regional Report for Southeast Asia: Time to Care underscores that discrimination remains most pronounced within the family. Traditional gender roles continue to confine women to caregiving responsibilities, while men are expected to assume the roles of family providers and decision-makers.

Strengthening the socio-economic resilience of women and young people to prevent violent extremism (CSW68 Side Event).
The inclusive and sustainable nature of development calls for the full involvement of women, who constitute more than half of humanity. In recent years, humanity has been facing a worrying rise in crime and violent extremism. This situation is a threat to peace and security, to human rights and sustainable development.
This phenomenon not only accentuates the climate of fear and insecurity, but also affects the efforts of those in power to guarantee security to populations and allow them to freely go about their activities.
For an effective fight against this violent extremism, it is essential to address its root causes, notably the socio-economic inequalities and vulnerabilities faced by populations, particularly women and young people. Women's economic empowerment is seen as one of the ideal paths to achieving gender equality and eradicating poverty.
The general objective of this event, which will take place in the form of a round table, is to share Togo's experiences in empowering women and youth, countering violent extremism and strengthening partnerships. It will be also an occasion to learn about the experiences of other countries to improve strategies and encourage new partnerships to scale up programs and projects relating to strengthening the resilience of women and young people in the face of violent extremism.
