hello! I am wondering why do u want to shift in El Filibusterismo or Noli me tangere? Just curious to know.
[thanks for this ask!]
HOLY FUCK HOLY SHITTING FUCK SOMEONE FINALLY NOTICED I'M SO HAPPY LMAO
i have so much to say about this oh my fucking god-
first things first, with the el noli fandom being very small, and the novels' author being very dead, i feel obliged to say that i have been desperately craving for content for the past how many years. much of this is due to the fact that the story itself is unfinished (don't even get me started on Makamisa)—but what really takes the cake is that i, along with my friends, have some thoughts on the two main novels.
[immediate apologies for this rant,, i tried to keep this short as i didn't want to get too into the topic lmao]
[TW: major spoilers for Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo by José Rizal]
- - -
(1) character disappearances
basilio was a major character in el filibusterismo not only because of his involvement in the story, but because of his past. he knew simoun's true identity, and likely had an idea what happened with elias (there's no way he wouldn't know this—especially when the scandal with crisostomo was such a big thing with the nobility, not to mention basilio being taken under captain tiago's wing after). while i wouldn't yet call him an accomplice to simoun's formation or development as a character at this point in time, when he buries his mother and elias with crisostomo, it's one of the points of interest in his story because it's how he gets involved with one of the main characters in the first place.
moving on to the sequel; he becomes a main character himself. for his story, he could've used his position as a lauded student of medicine to his advantage, especially after julí's death. I'm of the opinion that even if his reputation was ruined due to the arrests, there's no way he couldn't have pulled a favour or two. basilio was angry enough to agree to simoun's offer of revolution, and we don't see much else in the last few chapters save for him trying to stop isagani from going to the party. we don't see him at all after that.
and placido ))):< mans had a whole chapter to himself and we barely ever see him again. the one time we do later in the novel, it's a mere footnote. we don't know the specifics of what he did under simoun's command, we don't even get to witness him in action. what happened in the time between his meeting with simoun and the botched explosion? what happens with his mother after the debacle? what did padre millon do after his outburst? i have so many more questions crammed in one of my oldest google docs lmfao. overall, i really like placido's character too. i felt a kinship with him when i read his chapter—so that factored into my interest in his character.
- - -
(2) unfinished story + literature
i understand that the author died before the last novel was finished, but after getting so invested in the series, it left me wanting as a reader. don't get me wrong—i love reading about the theories being made on both official research and on fanfictions when it comes to the stories. but with the fanbase being so small, and some documents unavailable for perusal (at least for me), it's hard to cope with the knowledge that we won't get much else.
additionally, from what I've heard, the novels are being treated as homework, and just that. just research for a subject. perhaps it's my obsession with the stories peaking through, but i stand by that. as a fan of classic literature, especially of works that aren't as globally recognised, it kinda hurts my soul lmao.
alright, listen; material like Les Misérables, Crime and Punishment, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Pride and Prejudice, and et cetera—they deserve their acclaim. I'm not downplaying any of the author's successes nor the legacies that those kinds of works have earned. but stories such as Noli Me Tángere, El Filibusterismo, Wives and Daughters, The Setting Sun, Doña Barbara, and more—i enjoy reading lesser known literature. they have fewer analyses, lower recognition, and are generally more obscure. shifting for these classics is the true immersion, the true experience, in my opinion. it's a chance at finally getting the worlds I've only imagined fully come into life.
- - -
(3) personal reasons
a few days ago, a friend of mine remarked that we (the three of us who's in the group) might have had a chance at being called attractive had we lived during the time period the novels were written. this isn't to degrade my friends or myself in any way—just simply stating that there are always better people when it comes to things like beauty. i agreed with her. growing up, i never really fit into that category of conventional attractiveness; and while I've often been told otherwise, i know i still had to grow into my looks, and earn my place into the middle hierarchy with peers, not like the people who've had the privilege of money and breeding to comfort themselves with to actually pay to be attractive.
I'm not saying that to sound misogynistic—i genuinely don't give a shit about the peers who gave me trouble in the past—but i do want to experience that too, you know? everyone's always dreamed of a better life, and what finer way than shifting to experience that?

And it's like, I know I'm smart. I know I'm dedicated. I know I can go higher and BE in those higher role. I know I'm capable of more than just... this. Than just what is in effect factory work, and factory work that doesn't even keep people busy enough to not be awful to each other and act in clique-y, bullying, bullshit ways. Add to that a management that continually takes advantage of you, that promises everything, doesn't fulfill it or says that "you get yours later", and they wonder why their people don't want to do anything or help anyone and it shouldn't be like this. It wasn't this bad! But they promoted so many people that have this same fuck you philosophy.... I don't want to be here any longer.
But I can't seem to present myself in such a way that other employers can see that, no matter how much I turn myself into knots to try to be acceptable. No matter how i phrase myself or try to show off what i know and achieved. No matter what I do, it doesn't matter and I'm just so utterly exhausted to keep trying. Not to mention fighting my brain that already has difficulties seeing rewards like a neurotypical person does, so I feel n o t h i n g upon completing an application along with dealing with decision fatigue of figuring out where to apply and trying to tailor my fucking resume.
It's just a lot mentally to take, and work keeps me from actually having the energy to do those things. And it's just a perpetual cycle that I don't know how to fix.

I need more bestie Will and Bev content so I make it myself. They are the only cool people to ever exist in the FBI.
Also the Fred(dies) whom I despise (I love them with my whole heart). They are my favorite AO3 authors.

the level at which people are misusing the term "Never Again" in the far left absolutely infuriates me.
"Never Again" doesn't refer to the idea of no more genocides -- unfortunately people are evil and corrupt and seek scapegoats and destruction, there were genocides in the years following the Holocaust, there were genocides 10 years ago, there are multiple genocides going on as we speak
"Never Again" means we as Jews will pay attention to the warning signs, will not mindlessly allow antisemitism to fester and take over our communities, we will fight back. it means we will be proud. it means we will not let you hate us without a word of refusal.
"Never Again" is a warning for us, it is a reminder that what happened then can happen now -- is happening now. The Far Left doesn't get to use it against us. You don't get to turn our tragedies into hate-speech and antisemitic rhetoric.

I’m making a post, tw: abuse, sa
Every single disingenuous “critique” of episode for that revolves around pretending that Angel was written “liking” his abuse is fucking disgusting. You are not making any commentary about the episode, you are showing how little you know about abuse victims. You also show your COMPLETE lack of media literacy around the subject
Poison is a song about needing your abuser. The way that they have you in their clutches. You know they are bad for you, you want to leave, but you feel like you can’t, you feel their poison taking hold of you.
Poison is about Angel’s struggle with his abuser and how he hurts no matter what he portrays. The reason it’s upbeat with the horrifically sad lyrics is because that’s the facade Angel Plays. He pretends to be the sexy, open, very down to clown porn star because that’s who he’s had to be to please his abuser. He can’t turn it off because if he does in front of Valentino, he’s horrifically hurt.
However, this is a double edged sword. It causes him to not only ruin his relationships with others by testing their boundaries and picking fights with them, but it leads him to self destruct. He can’t keep it up all the time. He openly admits to letting people drug him. He’s self destructing, trying his hardest to ruin himself because he thinks he deserves it and that maybe, just maybe it’ll keep him from being Valentino’s favorite toy.
This is WIDELY relatable to many abuse victims. We suffer socially from our abuse, not just mentally. We can become mean people. We lash out at others. And we can have codependent relationships with our abusers. We miss them. We want to be with them. Not because we LIKE BEING ABUSED BUT BECAUSE WE ARE CURRENTLY VICTIMS OF ABUSE. Abuse targets people who are vulnerable. People who don’t have a social circle, and creates one with their abuser in the middle. Abuse breeds codependency.
I am extremely critical of the Hellaverse. But callous commentary on the SURPRISINGLY NUANCED DEPICTION OF ANGEL’S ABUSE has truly soured me to Vivziepop critical spaces. You’re not “owning” Viv with that shit. Viv already got her season 2 and her paycheck. You’re hurting people who see their experiences with Angel Dust. You’re also telling on yourself that abuse victims can’t confide in you about their less than flashy and fun experiences/symptoms. Just so you know.

just imagine charlie being the only other character in the hotel to understand Alastor's sayings and gripes about the modern world. She's even older than he is, those two could have so much to talk about. I'm still fairly young but I have plenty of gripes about the modern world, I just know those two old ladies could find something to share lol.
I adore Charlie and Alastor as characters, and I adore your art! All of your art is damn cute to me, it's great! I need more of charlie and alastor interacting and being silly in my life, romantic or platonic doesn't matter to me lmao.
You are just like me for real 😭 when the pilot came out I was so intrigued with Alastor and Charlie they immediately clicked for me and became my favourite pair of the show (tho now that the first season is out all of Alastor's other relationships stole my heart lmao but I still love them a lot) the "big bad villain who initially wanted to manipulate the sunshine character ends up accidently getting attached to them" trope is like one of my favourite tropes ever and they have the potential to become just that so I'm really invested in what their storyline will be I'M SO EXCITED
AND YEAH the fact that the hotel was already so has-been looking before Alastor showed up makes me think Charlie is similar to him, she's more up to date than him regarding new technologies ofc but I just know my girl loves vintage stuff ahah
(Also I want them to have a duo song in the next seasons SO BAD no offense to Heaven 2 Hell I love this song but I need something new it's been 4 years lol)

This voting period really just feels like im watching a bunch of people force a gay man back in the closet
I know thats not people's intentions but literally how else is he going to take this guilty vote. "I just don't want him to think his lying was okay" he doesn't! And he's not going to think that! He's actively trying to stop lying! All guiltying him will do is tell him he should have kept lying and continuing his relationship!!
"I just want him to have some kind of consequence for what he's done" Was Hinako literally dying not enough??? Sure, he didn't love her, but he still LIKED her. They were friends, they lived together, he married her because he WANTED to love her! He is literally drowning in guilt because of her death, I think he's had enough consequences by now. He might not be wearing his ring anymore, but he still carries it with him, he is very clearly still grieving her death.
"Innocent votes have no effect on him" Yes they will!! It didn't do anything last time because we forgave him for the wrong reasons and because he absolutely hates himself. Assuming we're right about him being gay, which I'm pretty confident we are, having his 'true' self validated rather than his fake one will 100% have a bigger effect on him this time. Guiltying him will only make his self-hate worse and show him that only his false self is forgivable, so he should keep lying to be accepted.
I know most people's intentions are not to make him keep lying, but regardless of whatever intention you have, it doesn't matter how you want him to take it, you can not ignore how he will actually take it.

The English title of “Questo mondo non mi renderà cattivo” misunderstands fundamentally the core theme of the series.
There, I said it.
Now a step back.
Italian comic book author Zerocalcare’s second series after “Strappare lungo i bordi” ( “Tear along the dotted line” ) is now streaming on netflix and, while I can’t swear by the translation for I haven’t seen it in English, you should go watch it.
Both of the series are funny and heartbreaking in equal measure, and exist as tales from Zerocalcare’s life as a jumping point to explore more existential topics.
Now, if you haven’t seen them yet, go and do so for spoilers await you under the cut.
The English title netlix chose for the series is “This world can’t tear me down”.
I get that they wanted to draw a connection to the first series (Tear along the dotted line), but the choice is so fundamentally at odds with the message of the series that I’m going to scream into the void about it.
See, a way more actual translation of the title could be “This world won’t make me cruel”.
You’re going to ask yourself how nitpicky can I possibly be. They are close enough, aren’t they? WRONG. And the problem is optimism.
If you’ve seen the series you’ll know that the setting is this: an old friend of Zero comes back after twenty years in rehab. Zero is forced to try and re-acquaint Cesare to the world despite his (perceived) inadequacy. Meanwhile, a neonazi movement is pushing to get a recently opened refugee center closed, and Zero is shocked when he discovers that Cesare has fallen with that crowd.
Sure of the fact that they preyed on his alienation after his many years in rehab, Zero confronts Cesare, who tells him that since he has it all (especially a job) Zero has no right to tell him how he should behave in his desperate situation.
And Zero does believe him, and becomes doubtful of his right to point out what someone in a worse situation should do.
If the point were about resisting in the face of an evil world then the title would fit. But it’s not.
The point, the actual point, is that in the face of evil we don’t have to become evil too. That no one has a monopoly on what’s right and wrong. That the line we must draw is that even in the face of hardship is that we don’t get to kick down who has it worse than us, just to stand a little bit taller than someone.
That’s why “this world won’t make [us] cruel”. It’s not because we are in a righteous fight, withstanding the elements. It’s because we must have a last shred of dignity and courage, to help who has it worse. It won’t be an easy fight, and perhaps not even a successful one.
To believe that the world won’t tear us down is irrealistic, and far to optimistic.
"The world won’t tear me down” is the story of someone’s lonely and rightful stand.
“The world won’t make me cruel”, instead, reminds us that we don’t live in a vacuum, that we are not alone. And that we can’t be right and be cruel to those who are more vulnerable than us.
Even when everything is out to hurt us, we still have to resist the temptation to be cruel.
Mi hanno spezzato le ossa, hanno brindato, e sono vivo.
Questo mondo non mi renderà cattivo

My work sometimes drives me bonkers with the way it treats its employees.
So we've (my partner and I) just worked 14 hours, in one go, during a hurricane to make sure that we're covered for blood supplies for hospitals and such in *undisclosed fl blood center* . After working 14 hours AND finding out that my childhood home flooded during that time, the only thing we've gotten is a kudos email. One sent to the team and one sent personally.
That's it, no mention of disaster pay like previous teams have gotten, no mention of equivalent pto to the hours you've worked being given to us, nothing besides the potential 4 hours of overtime pay required by the government AND some email kudos. And I'm not trying to be selfish, but like, we were in a flood zone. The blood center we work at is in one first flood zones on the fema list. And we did everything that we would normally do with 4-7 people with 2 at best, because we were low staffed (it would have been just me, had one other coworker who has my heart hadn't came in) due to the storm and them wanting minimal staffing. And we got a smidge under the same amount of units we usually get on a Tuesday.
And they wonder why their turnover is so bad and why the people that remain are all jaded and exhausted. I'm just, hollow. And tired. And I'm not sure how to fix that at this point, because finding a new job with cold applying is kind of soul destroying. 🙃 like not only is it a lot mentally for me to do, but not hearing anything back is just as damning. I'm so fucking exhausted and I just want to quit and crawl into a hole in the ground but even that hole has bills to pay and I only have so much in savings.
I'm just... really tired and I don't know how to fix it.
