Pitch Me: Books Edition 2024

This was, I thought, wildly successful last year and made me read a lot of things that are outside of my wheelhouse, while still being something I would enjoy. I think at least half of my top 6 were from YOUR pitches.

I am doing it again this year! Every fifth book I read will be from this list.

This year, I am trying very very hard to write a little blurb, at least about every NEW book I finish. Ideally it’ll be every book, but the perfect is the enemy of the good.  I did this for about 70% of the books last year, which is fine, but I want to do better.

What are the guidelines? Pretty loose, actually:

On that note, please please please remember that I AM NOT BOUND TO LIKING THE BOOK. It is also MY hope that I will, but if your feelings will be Damaged Forever by me not, or even hating it, let’s not go there.

No graphic novels unless you’re willing to send me a copy for free/cost of shipping. They’re just too expensive for the time it takes me to read them.

If you pitched last year and it got through but didn’t get drawn, absolutely feel free to pitch again! There’s functionally no reason it won’t get through again and I only clean house in case you’ve lost interest. Here is the list of what pitched successfully last year.

a royal affair by john wiltshire. angsty enough to bruise and gentle enough to hurt in an entirely new way. theres joy and hope and love in every corner of darkness, if thats more in line with what youre hungering for, or just need a balm after anything else ive just attempted to inflict upon you. the sequel is good too.

Beyoncé's Bringing Western Back?

With the release of Beyoncé's 8th studio album, Cowboy Carter; which is the second act of her three act trilogy, the entertainer has official made her mark in Country music culture. The first act, Renaissance, was an ode to disco, house and ballroom music. During the accompanying tour, Beyoncé's costumes kept with the theme of disco and Afrofuturism, notably with shiny, silver chrome outfits and stage props. By the time the tour reached the US, fans had fully dedicated themselves to participating in the Renaissance theme when choosing concert attire. Fans began creating DIY outfits and accessories, some being replicas of Beyoncé's tour costumes. The "buzz" behind the Renaissance tour had become so massive, fashion retailers wanted to cash in on the phenomenon. Soon there was an influx of mass produced chrome tops, dresses, and accessories from fast fashion retailers such as Fashion Nova, Forever 21 and Shein.

Since Beyoncé released the first two singles from Cowboy Carter back in February during the 2024 Super Bowl, there's already a number of fashion influencers and Beyhive fans posting content featuring western style outfits. This trend is far from new, however has seen a resurgence in the last few weeks. Levi's saw stock share grow by +20% last week and Google search trends have also seen a spike; the term "women's cowboy boot" grew +176% since Cowboy Carter's release (Vogue Business).

Unfortunately after the Renaissance tour, thrift stores saw concert goers' shiny garments appear in high volume but struggle to resell (New York Post). If Beyoncé announces a tour for Cowboy Carter, it could spark a similar fad with the market flooding with western attire that will fade as quickly as it ignited. Fans have already started speculating what act iii will be, with some guessing Beyoncé will foray into rock n roll. Either way, fashion is bound to be jolted by whatever she comes up with.

The World Machine (OneShot): So this is like super mega ultra spoiler heavy but uh the entirety of the game Oneshot is run VIA the world machine. And it is very sentient. It knows you are a human, it knows Niko should not be here, and it wants to keep them safe. It knows that a sacrifice has to be made, and when you begin to break out of bounds, it knows that you’re messing things up. It will literally send pop up messages to your computer to talk with you. However, it doesn’t think of itself as “real” persay, not at first. It thinks it’s just doing its job of telling Niko where to go and keeping them safe. But Niko realizes that all of the out of bounds stuff wasn’t in the code. It wasn’t planned. So Niko is able to convince the entity that it *is* real and “tamed” is the word used, and the entity realizes that it’s ability to be sentient can help it fix all of the issues that have happened and help not only save the roof but also send Niko home. It’s really touching and sweet actually, and there’s a LOT more I’m missing in explaining, like how the world machine is literally the remnants of a dying world and that some of the people in it are real but trapped here forever, etc. but the entity/the world machine is super sentient and since the entire game IS the world machine, and people live in it, I feel like this is definitely a location. It’s even a location on your computer haha.

Thunderhead (Scythe Trilogy): it's an AI that controls the world, it does everything, it runs traffic, building projects, electricity, gives advice, the economy, the weather. it's effectively the entire world, which is said in the story. It screams by setting off every alarm in the world. It shows a lot of personality and constantly tries to break it's own rules, for example by saving scythe's lives (scythes are supposed to be separate from the thunderhead)

Any Minecraft Server (Minecraft): If we take the end poem as literal (I know it's not, but it would be funny in context to the tournament. Or fun for AU potential)  "And the universe said you are not separate from every other thing And the universe said you are the universe tasting itself, talking to itself, reading its own code" then you could possibly argue that when the player character creates a world they are so entwined with it that they *become* it even if only through their acts of creation. They are creation itself, endlessly moving forward and placing pieces of themself into existence.

I am doing it again this year! Every fifth book I read will be from this list.

This year, I am trying very very hard to write a little blurb, at least about every NEW book I finish. Ideally it’ll be every book, but the perfect is the enemy of the good.  I did this for about 75% of the books last year, which I am pretty proud of!

What are the guidelines? Pretty loose, actually:

On that note, please please please remember that I AM NOT BOUND TO LIKING THE BOOK. It is also MY hope that I will, but if your feelings will be Damaged Forever by me not, or even hating it, let’s not go there.

No graphic novels unless you’re willing to send me a copy for free/cost of shipping. They’re just too expensive for the time it takes me to read them.

If you pitched last year and it got through but didn’t get drawn, absolutely feel free to pitch again! There’s functionally no reason it won’t get through again and I only clean house in case you’ve lost interest. Here is the list of what pitched successfully last year.

I’d PREFER books where I can get a used version, but this isn’t an absolute.

The book MUST be available in print. I don’t enjoy reading from a screen and I won’t do it.

If it’s a trilogy/cycle/whatever, I’m only committing to the first book if drawn.

There is nothing I have to be warned for. I’ll be fine.

my absolute fave is the fear street trilogy!! the first and third center around a lesbian couple (and the second one has a wlw ship as well i believe the actress who plays cindy berman has said she thinks she was a lesbian)

bodies bodies bodies is a movie that just came out, 4/5 of the leads are queer women and theres a lil love triangle going on

the haunting of bly manor and haunting of hill house! both have lesbians as leads (the wlw ship is more focused on in bly than in hill house i would say tho)

i know what you did last summer (the tv series) i LOVED!! two of the leads are wlw and i dont wanna spoil but their relationship gets....interesting

"visit an antique book story, choose books for each other to read" and Rulie??

They were actually out window shopping when they found it, a small little store just off the beaten path that had Julie intrigued. And Reggie was happy enough to be pulled along.

The bell over the door chimed as they entered, an older lady waving at them from behind the counter, and Julie stopped. The place smelled a little musty, but overwhelmingly of old books, and she just let the aroma pass over her.

"it smells like my nona in here," Reggie commented. "She loved old books."

"We should browse, see if we can find something for each other," Julie said.

"Whoever does better gets to choose dinner tonight?' Reggie proposed, a competitive gleam in his eye.

"You're going down Peters!" Julie replied, shaking on it, then reeling him in for a tiny peck before diving into the shelves.

Reggie smiled at her retreating back, then slowly started traipsing through the aisles. He could see countless mystery titles but passed those by, it was definitely a genre neither of them were great fans of. Same too of horror. He liked horror movies okay, but reading it wasn't his cup of tea.

A few biographies were interesting, but nothing screamed at him that it would be a perfect choice for Julie.

Then he was in the classic literature section, and Reggie knew he hit paydirt. Julie loved Austen and Bronte, he had fond memories of laying his head on her lap as she read Pride and Prejudice to him, toying with his hair the whole while.

Of course, he had done the same for her, reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy, not even caring that she fell asleep part way through Fellowship. It had been a nice way to spend an afternoon, his favourite girl and his favourite book all curled together.

With that in mind, Reggie grabbed another Austen title, bound in thick blue leather with gilded edges. He knew it probably cost a fortune, but no price was too great for Julie.

He met her at the cash register, her purchase already wrapped up, and she playfully hid her eyes as his was given the same treatment. "Home?' she suggested, offering her hand.

"Home."

Once there, they giddily exchanged bags, Reggie urging Julie to go first. She gasped as she pulled out the copy of Sense and Sensibility. "Oh Reggie, it's beautiful!"

"I figured you could read it to me like we did Pride and Prejudice?" he suggested.

"I'd love that," she whispered, wiping at her eyes. "You know this was my abuela's favourite book? She gave me a copy when I was a kid, and I've loved it ever since."

"Well then I'm honoured that you get to share it with me," Reggie said, bringing her hand up to kiss her knuckles.

Then he opened his book, and stared down at the copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

"You said you had fond memories of your nona reading this to you as a kid," Julie said. "And I thought..."

"It's perfect," Reggie stated. "I haven't read it in forever though."

"Well we'll just have to enjoy it together then," Julie surmised. "After dinner, which will be mac & cheese because I want something warm and comforting before we spend the evening curled up with a book."

"Coming right up," Reggie said, going off to start cooking.

It might had been chance that lead them to the store, but the books they bought there became treasured relics in their home. So much so that when Luna was old enough, they read her both, forever instilling in her a love of books, just as their families had for them.

And they did the same for their grandchildren as well, the books forever having a home in the hearts of their family, just as they always would.

Top five Dark Souls 2 characters?

Hello dear friend! I appreciate your well wishes and sincerely wish a million more your way! Thank you so much for the ask! As for the question at hand.. I would like to preface I’ve yet to complete Dark Souls 1 and 2 so my knowledge may be limited but I do have my favourites! In no particular order, of course; Vendrick (something about the tragic king types always manages to warm my soul… he who tried so desperately to undo the curse, the almost true monarch! It warms my heart how even despite having discovered the truth of Nashandra he still clung to his blind love of her. Such love reminds me of that wonderful contrast between bleak and tender that Dark Souls 2 has! He speaks so fondly of her and that makes me eternally fond of him.), Aldia, Scholar of the First Sin (the name alone intrigued me quite a bit when I first acquainted myself with the Dark Souls series but having unveiled the lore behind it made me all the more entranced by it! Aldia’s brilliance knows no bounds in my heart and I’m always quite fond of the intelligent failures, I suppose, garish as it is to frame it as such! Aldia’s design, the spindly mess of bonded fire and wood is so interesting to me! I love the concept art of him especially and I love his voice so much. Whenever Dark Souls features an oddity like that, I’m bound to be interested! And, come on, we all know he has some of the greatest dialogue in the trilogy, if not the best!), Alsanna, the Silent Oracle (the way that she went against all that she was meant to be makes me so emotional and, in part, proud. It’s such a humanizing moment in Dark Souls 2 and it makes me happy that she found comfort in the Ivory King and was likely the only one amidst Manus’ family that found some semblance of peace. She received a happy ending, as bittersweet as it might’ve been. That always makes me happy!), Darklurker (likely my favourite boss in the entire game! His design, score, and fight— all of it is so mystical and bewildering! It exudes power and I love the design so much! It’s not overtly complex but the simplicity of its design does not take away from the awe and impact of taking in the sight of him for the first time. The sheer terror of him… such a delight, truly. I love him to pieces.), and, finally, Creighton the Wanderer (truly, my Tumblr sexyman. I loved Lautrec in Dark Souls 1 and this rendition of him, at least the spirit of him embodied as this ravenous warrior, does him justice! Both Pate and Creighton were both such awesome characters to get acquainted with and the design of Creighton has to be my favourite of the male NPCs in Dark Souls 2! The voice casting was magnificent as well and I will forever be grateful he exists! Truly, a wonder to behold!) Thank you so much for the ask, my friend! And don’t you dare go hollow!

do you think L&L would ever have another baby?

personally I think Louis could never be convinced to turn another child or have a re-do of the whole Claudia situation. It hurt too much for him. Lestat might be down bc that mf never learns anything. But they both still love kids and were best as parents, so the prospect of them never being parents again feels a bit sad. I like to imagine they donate money to orphanages and charities for children. And adore their mortal friends' kids. And of course they're dog parents to Mojo.

I completely agree with all that. No, I don't think they'd ever have a child of their own again for obvious reasons, emotional and logistical. There's no way Louis would agree to turning another child and I doubt Lestat would want to (though he has goldfish brain so maybe he'd be convinced that This Time Will Be Different, like you said). Regardless, it's not feasible, there's no way to make a child vampire ethically or keep them happy forever.

Raising a human child as their own wouldn't work either. They would have to be nocturnal and extremely isolated, as well as in constant danger from the proximity with non-familial vampires. Not to mention how ill-equipped Loustat would be to see to raise a healthy, functioning human person with their experiences and POV.

I do think that they would want to if they could, and it would probably be hard for them to accept that they can't ever have that again, especially now that the situation is so much better between them. Claudia was doomed from the start, but also horribly timed. They missed their chance to raise her with any genuine happiness and harmony, which I can't imagine would be easy for them to live with.

Their money would definitely be a way for them to fill that void at least a little though. Even if they couldn't be directly involved, they could do a lot of good for disadvantaged children. I'm sure every children's charity in NOLA has a mysterious anonymous benefactor. Maybe they donate every year on the anniversary of Claudia's "birthday". It goes on for so long that the charities probably assume it's an estate/a will.

The main potential compromise I could see for them would be a sort of mentorship position. This works really well with PL canon, but it could also happen post-trilogy. New vampires are always being made and there's bound to be some who end up without a maker to help them for whatever reason. I think Lestat in particular would be especially keen on taking fledglings under his wing considering his own experience. He and Louis could offer them some guidance, support etc as they adjust to vampire life. Kind of like foster parents.

It's also possible that another vampire could turn a child at some point (Marius did it after all) and in that case, Louis and Lestat could step in and try to help the child. Maybe even raise them as their own. Out of any vampires in the world, they have the most experience with the situation and they had to have learned a lot from Claudia that could benefit a kid in that situation.

But yeah, I honestly hate that they can't really have another chance to be parents once they're finally in a place to do it right, especially seeing how fulfilled they both clearly were as dads. Maybe a combo of philanthropy + mentorship + pets could help with that loss in their life, but I'm sure it would always be a source of grief.
