This week, Arthur, Julian, and Steve analyze the most recent movie polling for the AFI Top 100, toasting the good choices, arguing over the questionable, and wondering how they could leave off classics like “Dr. Zhivago,” “The Great Escape” and many others.

Headcanon that Jason Grace takes his Roman history obsession to the next level, to the point where he has totally read illegal/restricted books in camp Jupiter before. Yk how there are restricted libraries? Camp Jupiter totally has tons of those only elite members can access. Jason totally exploits his position just for more history info.
Yk how annabeth said in Mark of Athena, that Jason looks like he knows way TOO much but simply doesn't tell anyone? Well he does. he has dark af secrets and tea, he'd literally be looking for an opportunity to spill all of it 👀 he has certainly read very um. Questionable things.
(another hc that annabeth is literally the only one he spills these stuff to bc she is legit the only one who gets the art of history, also, she totally bribed him for information, we know that canonically they both DID have nerdy discussions w e/o. Annabeth said in moa that Jason had described the exteriors of new Rome in perfect detail to her and how Reyna was supposed to look like, in the lost hero, those two spent hours researching about the Roman/Greek forms of gods by interrogating clovis + Piper noted how well they both debated about the Athena parthenos without any blame or hostility, just perfectly fitting their collective pieces of research information together. Ugh this friendship was such a wasted potential. It's literally no wonder that annabeth cried till she was sick for Jason's death. They weren't close friends or anything, but they intellectually respected eachother in a very healthy way, it was refreshing to read about tbh.
Jason and annabeth are the OG nerd friends fr.

Thor and Loki have become pop culture icons thanks to Marvel. But the influence of Norse mythology on contemporary fantasy runs through Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and so much more. University of Chicago professor and author Ada Palmer explains how people misunderstood Norse mythology for centuries, and why it’s so hard to capture the mindset of the Vikings in pop culture. And I talk with University of Oxford professor Carolyne Larrington, author of The Norse Myths That Shape the Way We Think, about how a light Marvel movie and a grimdark fantasy film like The Northman each capture aspects of the mythology in their own ways.

Did you know that the Nike MAG and the self-drying jacket that Michael J Fox wore in Back To The Future 2 both had to be manually operated by crew members in order for them to appear automated?

Malevolent Podcast & Film History
(Part 1 Probably cause I really want to do further research into this but I don't have time rn)
When you have to start doing Work Things, but you get completely caught up finding out in what year exactly the Malevolent Podcast takes place in, so you can compare that to a history of film timeline to have a research basis for figuring out the likeliness that, in the event Arthur does go to see a movie for John, the movie they see is a) a silent film with dialogue cards on screen and b) there's still piano/musical accompaniment in the theater with the film.
The Jazz Singer, famed for being the first sound film (and heralding the end of the silent era of film), was released in 1927. I feel like it was stated somewhere in an episode that Malevolent takes place in 1934, but I can't find that specific reference in the transcripts (and I won't have a chance to thoroughly look through them until later and my brain is fixated on this now).
With that in mind, it stands to reason that, if they do see a movie, it likely will be a 'talkie'.
However, the transition from silent film to films with synchronized dialogue recordings didn't happen overnight. From the small amount of research I've been able to do so far, 1927-early 1930s was a transitional period where studios were still figuring things out.
So, depending on the ratio of talkies vs. silent films being released, it could be either honestly. Am I going to do a research deep dive into what movies were released during this period and which ones were silent vs. not later? Most Probably.
My main point here is that, depending on the movie, a couple different scenarios could happen:
Silent Film
Arthur takes John to see a silent film, meaning Arthur is sitting in a dark room with only the occasional audio cue for frame of reference on what's happening in the film.
This could be particularly fun if John is the type to verbally react to a movie (i.e. John is yelling at the characters/telling them their being moronic and should do something else). So, Arthur is listening to John react to something he has no way of knowing for himself, which could be very entertaining.
2. Talkie
Arthur takes John to see a talkie, meaning Arthur would at least be able to hear the dialogue being spoken in the movie.
However, not every scene in a movie would have synchronized dialogue (The Jazz Singer, according to its wiki, only had 'several isolated sequences'), which would mean Arthur would be in silence (except for John) for most of the movie until, from his POV, Random Unexpected Dialogue Starts Happening.
Additionally, Arthur states he's only seen a few movies before. From that, it can be extrapolated that he goes to the theater infrequently. It's possible then he's only gone to the theater and seen silent films in the past. Thus, would be completely shocked if the one they see (unexpectedly to him) has audio dialogue.
Though, this also relies on how much knowledge of film advancements he has. Arthur may know in passing, for instance, that dialogue synchronization has become possible, but hasn't sought out experience with it as of yet.
I personally like the idea of Arthur being reluctant to go to the theater because he'd assume the movie they'd see is silent, meaning he'd just be sitting in a dark room for an extended period of time not being able to do anything.
Except then there is audio dialogue in the movie, and Arthur freaks out a bit because he's not expecting it. John responds to his freak out, and that could lead to a very interesting interaction between them.

This summer, Hayao Miyazaki will be releasing his final animated film before retiring. Environmental stewardship has been a consistent theme throughout his work, from My Neighbor Totoro to Spirited Away to Princess Mononoke. But what exactly has he been saying all this time about our relationship to the natural world? I gather a panel of experts to discuss the worlds that Miyazaki creates, and how his stories tap into current debates around the climate crisis. Featuring Yuan Pan, lecturer on Environmental Management at the University of Reading, and environmental journalists and authors Isaac Yuen and Emma Marris.
