Democrats flipped a state legislative seat in a special election in Alabama on Tuesday.

There aren't too many swing districts in Alabama. Trump carried Alabama State House District 10 with 49% of the vote in 2020 and Republican David Cole won that legislative seat in 2022 with 52%.

So on Tuesday, Democrat Marilyn Lands won that seat with 62% of the vote. She campaigned strongly in favor of IVF which had been struck down by Alabama's blatantly Christian fundamentalist Supreme Court.

While Republicans will still retain their supermajority in the chamber, both parties were paying close attention to see whether a recent ruling from the Alabama Supreme Court that threatened access to in vitro fertilization could be a winning issue in competitive areas like this suburban Huntsville constituency. Lands focused intently on reproductive rights in her campaign to replace Cole, who resigned last summer after getting convicted on voter fraud charges. "It's shameful that today women have fewer freedoms than I did two decades ago," she said in one spot excoriating the state's near-total abortion ban. Lands, a mental health counselor, also argued the legislature didn't do enough to protect IVF when it passed a law earlier this month that shields clinics from liability.

Republican attempts to take away reproductive freedom are backfiring. Democrat Marilyn Lands outperformed Donald Trump by 13 points in Northern Alabama.

Republicans would put a Christian fundamentalist overseer in every bedroom and doctor's office if they could. But even voters in red states have resisted GOP attempts to act as reproduction nannies.

Do not underestimate reproductive freedom as an issue this year. Bring it up liberally whenever you hear some MAGA zombie talking shit about the election this year.

I think the answer varies on how tired he is and how wired up his prey drive is. Prey drive is likely what's going to make him pay attention to it in the first place (small blobs moving rhymthically...fascinating), but if he's tired, it's going to take him a lot longer to snap out of it. But yeah, once he does he'll go right into dismantling it to figure out the mechanics, and then lose interest entirely once the mystery gets solved. Or he tries to emulate its fluid mechanics but with void and concentrated liquid soul instead, because that feels like the sort of batshit experiment he'd do right after something relatively mundane like lava lamp disassembly

As for WL, she probably won't be concerned as long as his soul level is good. Sitting completely still and staring at something fascinating for hours is normal PK behavior, as long as it doesn't interfere with her husband's health then she'll happily leave him to it, knowing that he'll go to infodump it all to her later.

Just thinking about Summer being a representation of Bran, the Fisher King. Summer taking several wounds over the course of the story, notably one to the leg just as Bran did. Summer who goes beyond the ice wall to lands of snow (closer to lands of winter) and becomes emaciated…summer getting thinner and being wounded as winter nears/gets stronger. It’s almost like the changing of the seasons. We see that summer journeys to the lands of snow, biding his time before he returns - just as Bran will surely return. The return of Bran meaning the return of the summer. Have to wonder if we’ll see Summer (the direwolf) start to get bigger as spring is ushered in. Winter = death, but Spring = rebirth/growth. And after spring comes summer, when the summer king reigns.
