Hey! I work as a freelance content writer/copywriter as well. I had to stop working because of academic pressure, but the pay in my country is peanuts, and I have always wanted to expand globally. I would really appreciate it if you could share some tips on how you started getting clients and how did you build your agency? Thanks!!
Hi love! Some high-level tips are below:
Intern/Apply to remote internships to get clips/experience
Create an Upwork account to get entry-level work/testimonials to get some client portfolio work and to help build your professional reputation
Always be on the lookout for leads, do your research, and craft a thoughtful/useful pitch for the client/publisher. Send work samples/share how you can help them. Follow up – remember rejection is part of the job, it's a numbers game
Start your own blog to show off your skills/build credibility in the writing world/your field
Save all of your quality-work to use in your portfolio. Always have a portfolio ready in PDF format and as a direct link that's mobile-friendly available when pitching clients
Utilize LinkedIn, your university connections, build your network, request informational interviews, and don't be shy to ask for letters of recommendation or referrals
When you do get a client whose honest and integral, show up and do your best work and submit it on time. If you can't for whatever reason, request an extension/notify them of the delay ahead of time
Perfect your craft, continuously read about your industry, and sharpen your skills. Show up with a business owner, not employee, mindset. This might be different when you're doing contract work for an agency where they might have their own contracts, set a budget, etc. But, when working with smaller, independent clients, ensure you have your rates, terms, general business practices, contracts (see a lawyer about this one), onboarding process, client questionnaire, payment method, etc., all set up for your client to acclimate to when you're ready to sign them. Remember, your clients are your customers, not your employers. It is a partnership, not an unequal power dynamic – you are the talent, not the direct report.
Hope this helps xx

Brand Promo Video (Teaser #1) for Come Alive Co
See photoshoot and read process notes here
why i loved this project:
a rebrand is usually fun, always gritty, and very thought-intensive — even moreso, for yourself. this rebrand for my own brand storytelling company, Come Alive Co, represented two important milestones in my life:
inviting my community in to co-create (’cuz how easy is it to let ego win?), and
grounding down into the vibrancy of my (fuller) identity: not just as a female founder or branding pro, but as a filipina

Asian Drama Tropes 2024—April
For the @asian-drama-tropes event 2024. I’ll be publishing one true drabble (100 words exactly) per month for the event :)
April | Prompt: pressure point activation
Izuna’s senbon slides in seamlessly, and Tobirama‘s arms drop to his side as dead weight. Before the man can react, her second needle paralyses his legs. “I’d be a fool to have your hands in range of me otherwise,” she explains as she catches his body and lowers him to the ground. “Oh, whoops.” A hasty third needle stops whatever Tobirama is trying to do with his chakra. She smiles sharply and starts pulling aside pieces of his armour to bare his chest. “Now, about that poison…” Ridiculous. To think that someone else thought to kill her rival! Absolutely not.

Jin Ling • 金凌
Jin Ling was always such a hot-blooded youth, especially with the lit fires Jiang Cheng put under him to train and get stronger. Quite the contrast to Jin Guangyao, who had often told the boy to slow down. The boy was loud and proud, and yet still came back to you for reassurance if he put you in any harm or if Jiang Cheng was too distant that day. A cute kid, you admit.
So when you have to use his own weapon to save him from a killer rogue cultivator, you simply see it as part of the course and smile. The enemy's weapon is a rope dart; sadly you're slower then your peers and the tip lodges into your hand where you hold the sword.
For the enemy, and their soon cooling corpse, it was only your complexion that had washed up over the years. You did need to take a long break against a tree to catch your breath, but at least it was over now.
Jin Ling had been thrown to the forest shrubbery by a kick to his chest and by the time he had made it to you, you had taken care of the cultivator. He first took his sword back and flicked off any remaining blood, before he started to check your hands and look around the field.
"You didn't have to do that, especially with how I'm the one escorting you to Yunmeng." Jin Ling gripes and notes your bruised and cut hand from where you had the dart lodged in. "Uncle will be displeased I didn't kill him..."
You laugh at the thought of Jiang Cheng scolding anyone for allowing you to fight; especially since if you were so hopeless, Jiang Cheng wouldn't have just sent Jin Ling as your bodyguard. But for now, you simply thank Jin Ling for the gauze he puts over your bruises, as he tries to brush off your thanks in turn.
Lan Sizhui • 蓝愿
Being a part of the field training for a group of Gusu Lan disciples can either be educational, a field trip, or a real trip to a migraine. Thankfully your small group was headed by Lan Sizhui, the more level-headed senior of the junior disciplines.
Lan Sizhui was always a natural at anything involving a talisman or sigils, so you definitely were going to focus elsewhere for training when you saw someone shady moving in on your group of students. A beggar, a thug, a cultivator: the identity mattered not as you prepared an acupuncture strike.
You shoot the strike behind Sizhui and Jingyiーwho had their backs open on your left as he was taking a role callーand managed to strike the man's shoulder and clavicle meridians. Sadly he had tried to use the dirty tactic of biting before he fully went down, so you had an abrasion level bite wound across your index and middle fingers.
Townspeople and students all took a step back as he fell, and a couple fiery disciples jumped to put the man in temporary cuffs while barking for the guards. Your calmest and most attentive student to you, stayed by your side since the beginning.
"I apologize for you getting hurt protecting me. I shall do better next time, I promise." Lan Sizhui takes a handkerchief from his sash and attempts to use their drink water to clean the wound gently on your hand.
You wanted to tell him it'd be fine, or at least you'd be fine. You've beaten worse while feeling worse and in a lot worse company. But for some reason or another, you allowed Lan Sizhui to just dote on you this one time. He's far too polite to turn away.
Lan Jingyi • 蓝景仪
[Continued from Lan Sizhui's] If Lan Sizhui was the one to ease your worry this group would be training well and behave, it's Lan Jingyi who you know will liven things up and act first. Lan Jingyi might have a slightly fickle streak and might walk off once or twice, but he was a good kid.
A little bit of a temperament can be bad under his loud words and (slightly hypocritical) rule declaration. But at least, he was fast on his feet as well, being the first to jump on the perpetrator who, well, bit you.
While you're getting your wound cleaned and pressure put on it by Sizhui, you feel other students start to crowd you as Jingyi and another finish up tying the man. A seat was given to you, and you feel a bit odd sitting in it when you're not feeling worse for wear and all your disciples were standing around you.
Waiting for the guards of the city while hogging part of the road also makes you feel weird, but at least your disciples had something else to gripe about. Whoever the attacher was, they'd know soon enough.
Lan Sizhui had walked off to complete the supply run with half of the disciples and you were left with Lan Jingyi at your side. Said student saw how antsy you were while sitting. He gave his own form of comfort. "You moved so fast, I thought it might have been a something dangerous. You didn't... have to."
Jingyi was one of the few students who acted tough and didn't seem to care for your waning health as much as the others. Seem was a big word. Lan Jingyi was childish at heart and sickness can be very scary for someone so young, so you happily explain why yes this teacher had to fight for you.

(ID - a digital drawing of the founder & the borg queen from Star Trek. The drawing is done in greens, olive tones, bright yellows, grays, and blues. The borg queen stands with one hand very close to the founder’s face, she’s smiling. The founder stands with her hands clasped behind her back, with her head turned to the borg queen, unsmiling. The founder says “i would advice caution, Queen.” The borg Queen replies, “Would you, now?” End ID)
I don’t know what’s going on in Picard but i’m assuming i’m right and the borg Queen & founder got nasty

6 Young Female Entrepreneurs You Need to Know
There has been a wave of young female entrepreneurs who have come up with brilliant, socially relevant, and uplifting ideas. They have put meticulous planning and research into their enterprises. WomELLE lists six incredible young female entrepreneurs who have reached success with their mind-blowing ideas.
Adelle Archer, CEO and C0-founder of Eterneva
Founded by 30-year-old Adelle Archer, Eterneva is an enterprise that turns the ashes of cremated people and pets into diamonds. Her start-up has been featured on Shark Tank and even received funding. Archer has completed an MBA in Entrepreneurship and was featured in Forbes's prestigious 30 under 30 list.
In 2015, when Archer lost her mentor to pancreatic cancer, she and her partner Garret got together to channel the grief into a thoughtful venture.
'Remembering Remarkably' is the tagline of this remarkable enterprise.
Lexi P, Founder of Curlanistas
Lexi P. founded Curlanistas when she was eleven years old. She says that each woman of color with unusual hair needs to embrace herself as she is—unique and beautiful. Curlanistas is such an initiative that fosters confidence in women of color about their unique hair.
Tumblr media
Lexi's hair care products currently retail at 88 stores across the US. These are also available on her website. Lexi counts it as her great accomplishment that her hair care products have found a space on store shelves and are allowing girls with unique hair textures to be more confident.
Lexi wants to be a powerful influencer. The honest advice that she has for young girls is "pursue your passion; back it with great research; make the most of social media, and just don't give up on yourself."
Kayla Pendleton, Founder of Her Space
A digital marketer by profession, Kayla Pendleton worked from her home office for many years. However, everything was not going smoothly. The distractions were too many. She started going to coffee shops twice a week, but that did not work either. Soon Kayla realized that it was time to move out. This gave birth to a business idea. Kayla was 26 years old when she launched the co-working space for women called Her Space.
It took her 3 years to establish Her Space. However, 75 women work out of 'Her Space' right now. They hold many conferences, events, and workshops that are mainly tailored to women in business.
Aditi Gupta, Founder of Menstrupedia
For a long time, the topic of menstruation has been hushed. Therefore Aditi Gupta, then a student at the National Institute of Design, India, decided to create awareness and generate an avenue of knowledge regarding this taboo topic. In partnership with her two batchmates, Tuhin Paul and Rajat Mittal, she launched a comic strip called Menstrupedia in 2012. Currently, Menstrupedia comics are published in 14 languages in more than 18 countries, and Gupta herself was featured by Forbes India in the 30 under 30 list.
Kamariya Warren, Founder of Brown Girls Dictionary
Age is certainly not a bar for entrepreneurship. When Kamariya went shopping for her birthday party, she was disappointed to find that there were no accessories tailored specifically to Brown and black girls. However, the disappointment soon turned into an opportunity when Kamariya decided to produce school supplies, stationery, party supplies, and accessories. It is almost unbelievable, but she currently has five employees and five volunteers. Equally startling is the fact that she sells around 10,000 notebooks and 1,500 backpacks every year. She is planning to add lip glosses as well. The products are sold online.
Each product is etched with a lively and beautiful illustration of a black or a brown girl. Kamariya finds it encouraging when she sees girls carrying her products.
Ifeyinwa Frederick, Co-founder of Chuku's
Ifeyinwa, originally from Nigeria, missed her country food in London. She waited for many years for an authentic Nigerian food destination to spring up. However, once in their 20s, Ifeyinwa and her brother founded Chuku's, the world's first Tapas Nigerian restaurant. Interestingly, Ifeyinwa also teaches a crash course in Nigerian Tapas. The brother-sister duo has designed the menu in such a manner that it is completely and authentically Nigerian. Chuku's is one of the best places to sit back and relax, with Nigerian music, art, and food to offer.
