thoughts on the mk boys and their tastes in foods? cuisines, fav snacks, how they might bicker about things, whatever u feel <3
I love talking ab food preferences hehehhehe this kinda ended up being a look at their relationships with food in general as well which was actually rlly fun to explore! (Obvs food talk, as well as talk of the system’s childhood, food sensory issues, and specifically issues with eating due to neurodivergence, not any ED stuff, but still, if any of those r squicks for you 🤙)
Marc
I think Marc’s the most rigid when it comes to his foods. He’s not adverse to trying new things, he just keeps his circles small and knows what he likes
Bar a few specific cases, I don’t think he’s much of a mushy/goopy food person, or a sweet tooth
Soup’s fine (he loves bean soups and soups with meat bc they’re hearty), some puddings, some dips (like hummus and guacamole), but he’s not a huge fan of tomato products in tomato form (pizza is fine, bruschetta wouldn’t be) or things that feel slimy (like pasta with Alfredo sauce, or uncooked beans in sauce)
Some exceptions include Chicago deep dish, star fruit, salsa, and pickled veggies
I think he generally likes crunchy things like chips, carrots, apples, crackers, and more neutral baked goods like breads and bagels. He’s absolutely a bagel with cream cheese on the go kind of guy, nostalgic and tasty (though for his preference the ones in Chicago beat out New York and London any day)
He doesn’t mind sweet stuff, it’s just not his favorite. He’ll have a danish every now and then, maybe a brownie, but it’s just not stuff he actively seeks out
I think he still tries to keep roughly kosher, out of familiarity and comfort and connection, but I could also see him only adhering to certain rules (like no pork but good w cheeseburgers), or it slipping if he’s in deep emotional distress or especially bitter at his parents, but he does try
I think he knows how to cook pretty decently, maybe not top of the line but he can absolutely make a meal, and usually tries to make stuff from scratch to avoid shopping too much. He’s not a huge fan of crowded stores or having to make lists and plan meals, so sticking to basics and stuff he knows, stuff he can make again and again and have as leftovers later, is usually how he likes to do things
He tries to recreate family comfort foods he remembers from his childhood sometimes (like hamantaschen with guava filling, local deli potato salads, their Passover tamales), kind of as a coping mechanism, and it’s never quite the same, but every time he gets a bit closer to whatever dish he’s attempting, it feels more worth it to keep trying
Overall he likes stuff that’s hearty, stuff that he can eat that will last him most of the day. It’s the kind of food he relied on in the military, and when he needed to spend as much time out of the house as possible when he was younger, and it works nowadays to keep the body fed and healthy when dealing with executive dysfunction and memory issues
Having stuff that can hold him over and that he doesn’t have to worry about too much creates a reliable structure he can depend on, familiarity in chaos, and so that’s what a lot of his food choices circle back to
It’s another grounding mechanism for him, another piece of the puzzle and routine
Steven (I will b using American n British terms interchangeably just ignore it)
Steven’s pretty British and snacky with his food, and obviously he’s vegan and keeps kosher, but beyond that he’s not too picky, and isn’t the best when it comes to taking care of the body with food
He likes sweets and fruits and chips, stuff like blueberries and nuts that he can eat absentmindedly while he reads, or that he can stuff in a ziploc and take to work
Crisp sandwiches and beans on toast are big too, and he uses vegan butter and cheese to make them, usually for breakfast or after work, and those are both comfort meals for him, ones that are quick and easy and don’t take much effort
He gets vegan sausage rolls from the store or makes them himself if the premade brands aren’t certified, and he likes those for breakfasts on days off when he can have a bit more of a lazy day in, make some tea, put on a long documentary, hang back with a bigger breakfast, that kind if thing. He makes Yorkshire puddings and hash browns for those kind of days if he has the energy
Yorkshire puddings are also a general favorite of his, and he usually leans into having them more for dessert, with big scoops of vegan ice cream after he’s had a bad day (his favorite flavor is vanilla but he experiments with weird flavors a lot)
Cereal’s a big one too, usually with almond milk and he oscillates between liking sweetened or unsweetened kinds more
I think the spiciest thing he eats semi regularly would be stuff like jalapeño potato chips or slightly spicy veggie dips, he’d probably consider brown sauce kind of spicy, and I think his tolerance is low
Steven also absolutely falls into the neurodivergent trap of food being in the background, something that easily slips his mind, or when it doesn’t, ends up at the mercy of convenience
None of his foods are bad on their own, but the issues arise when all he’s eaten in a day is two pieces of beans on toast and it’s already bedtime, or when he gets so engrossed in reading he doesn’t get up for six hours and suddenly feels lightheaded
He tries his best, he just never thinks about it much and usually falls into things that are quick when he does, which can easily lead to him eating sandwiches and almonds for a whole week
He also has some sensory issues that can muddle things, like a usual go to food being fine one moment and disagreeable to his mouth the next, and if he can’t find anything to eat it’s easy for him to just shrug it off and forget
Reminders started popping up on his phone at some point (totally not from Marc) to check in and make sure he’s gotten some food in him, and those have helped loads, but it’s still not perfect
Post Cairo Marc helps more, checking in with Steven when the body feels funky and usually having the spoons to cook between the two of them, so they end up having stuff available to grab in the fridge when they need. Marc even tries to label the stuff that’s non-vegan as well as which things have meat and which have dairy, and even when their fridge gets cluttered and extremely disorganized the care in it always makes Steven smile
Jake
Jake’s a big proponent of good food
His time in front over the years has been short enough that he always tries to make eating worth it, so he’ll seek out a good solid meal whenever he can
I think he spent a lot of time perusing Chicago and New York’s hole in the wall shops or food trucks, and has a pretty wide taste because of that
He doesn’t really keep kosher? Like sometimes he’ll lean into it if it suits the situation, or pisses Khonshu off, or it feels… right to him, but his relationship with shit is complicated and he fluctuates a lot, and it’s definitely not the defining thing that dictates his food choices
He likes pizza (New York style) and hotdogs (Colombian style, Chicago style, or ones all decked out like wrapped in bacon with carmelized onions, jalepeños, tomatoes, mayo, etc), and is also partial to wet beef sandwiches
Lots of Latino comfort food as well, like chicken pepián, Cuban coffee with sweet bread, Guatemalan empanadas, tacos al pastor, pupusas, etc.
He’s hates eating warm food cold, so whenever he eats Steven or Marc’s leftovers he always has to warm them up, otherwise it hits bad in his brain. He doesn’t have many sensory issues with food beyond that though
He was recommended to Gena’s by some acquaintances in London after hanging around a few bars and clubs with a high Latino community, and her food is the first stuff that really hits for him there. It’s not like it’s the only good food he’s tried in London, but something about Gena’s just clicks and becomes comforting
He also has a pretty strong sweet tooth, and will especially seek out sugar for comfort. He loves tres leches and while he’s also a straight black coffee enjoyer, Gena’s tintos always hit just right. He’s also always down for a classic slice of apple pie a la mode
Even though my take on Gena has her specializing in Colombian food, she makes Jake some of his favorite dishes once they get to know each other better, hoping to bring some of that comfort to the new area. She surprises him with her own take on rellenitos during one particular visit, and he ends up bringing a small take away container of them back to Steven’s apartment because he couldn’t make himself eat them all, and he didn’t want to waste them
He may not have any solid memories of Wendy outside of stepping in to get yelled at when the others couldn’t take it, and he sure as hell doesn’t have any fondness for Elias, but for some reason he can remember how that kitchen smelled, and the sound of the frying pan, and wrapped up leftovers in the fridge, and it’s still important to him and part of him
He scrawls some little note on the top of the take out container with a little “From Mum” to tie it off, and that ends up being enough for Steven not to question where the rellenitos came from when he finds them in his fridge. And he’s so excited!
Jake’s not even mad when he eats the rest of them before he can front next, he’s just glad he got to share a little bit of something that Steven enjoyed :-)
All together
I’ve already talked a lil ab Steven and Marc post Cairo, but I think once all three of them are on functional speaking terms and are cohabiting more, food is very chaotic!
They have to talk about boundaries and figure out what counts when it comes to who’s fronting and each other’s dietary restrictions
Some of the foods Jake likes are too spicy for Steven and some of Steven’s foods make Marc squirm, it’s complicated
Overall though there’s a lot of sharing and talking and bickering, fighting to see who makes dinner or frustration that someone else got to front and eat the last of something tasty, but they make it work
Feel free to add on your own hcs or additions! Or any corrections if something here sticks out as very obviously inaccurate (truly no worries!). Most of the stuff here is from research and friends, so tysm to @scarabgrant n @steverogers-against-disney n others for the food talks we’ve had that helped contribute to this :-)
And a general reminder as well: Stand up, stretch, and rmr to drink water and eat something if you haven’t in awhile! Have a lovely dayyy💖💖🤙

It includes a quote from JIMENA, Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa, which has a Passover Guide that includes Mimouna.
Perhaps the most well known Moroccan Passover tradition is Mimouna which takes place at the end of Passover. Mimouna is the celebration of spring's bounty and includes delicious sweets and foods prepared with flour, honey, milk and butter. A Mimouna favorite is Mufletta, a Moroccan Jewish crepe adorned with honey, nuts, fruits or jams. Friends, family, and neighbors celebrate and feast from sunset on the last day of Passover until the following night. In Israel it has become so popular that it's grown into a nationally recognized holiday. Please see our Mimouna supplement at the end of this document for more!

RECIPE: Matzo Fattoush (from Salad Freak by Jess Damuck)
This is a great dish to serve as part of a Passover meal, and an even better way to use up the couple of extra leftover matzo in an opened box that are a little on the stale side (after you’ve also saved some to make your matzo brei—custardy matzo and eggs, one of my all-time favorite breakfasts).
Serves 4 to 6 as a side
PRODUCE
1 lemon
½ small red onion
5 Persian cucumbers, or 1 English cucumber
2 pints (565 g) cherry tomatoes
1 handful chopped fresh dill
1 handful fresh parsley leaves
1 handful fresh mint leaves
DAIRY
1 large egg
PANTRY
1 tablespoon pomegranate molasses
¼ cup (60 ml) extra- virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 matzo
3 tablespoons store-bought Everything Seasoning or za’atar
Ground sumac
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
MAKE THE POMEGRANATE MOLASSES VINAIGRETTE: In a small bowl, whisk together the juice of 1 lemon, 1 tablespoon pomegranate molasses, and ¼ cup (60 ml) olive oil and season well with salt and pepper.
COOK: Set 3 matzo on a rimmed baking sheet. Beat 1 egg with a fork until blended. Brush the matzo on both sides with egg and sprinkle 3 tablespoons Everything Seasoning on both sides. Bake, flipping once, until golden on both sides and crispy, about 15 minutes total.
PREP: Thinly slice ½ red onion and 5 Persian or 1 English cucumber. Cut 2 pints (565 g) cherry tomatoes in half.
ASSEMBLE AND SERVE: Break the matzo into bite-size pieces and put in a large bowl. Add the onion, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Add 1 handful each of dill, parsley, and mint. Pour the dressing into the bowl and toss everything to combine. Sprinkle with sumac and season again with salt and pepper if necessary. Transfer to a serving platter or bowl and sprinkle with a bit of additional sumac.

good stuff 4-19-22
i finished the last captive prince book last night and ahhhHHHH!!!!! overall, i think the second book was my favorite, but i really loved the whole story so much, and i am so sad it’s over!!!!!!!!!!
yesterday i made chocolate caramel matzo to bring into work today and everyone loved it 😊 i always get so paranoid when people are eating stuff i made, and i worried that they were just pretending to like it to be nice, but they kept going back for more and more so yay!
i dropped by my friend’s house after work today because i accidentally left my leftover enchiladas in her fridge and i wanted to eat them lol. and i told her i was heading to the big liquor store because i knew they would have blackberry manischewitz, and she said she wanted to tag along. so we went to the liquor store, i got my blackberry wine and also some premade canned cocktails i wanted to try, she got a whole bunch of shit, and then we stopped for delicious pizza on the way back to her place, and then i went home! it was nice to see her unexpectedly and also nice that i still had some of my evening left over because a lot of times when i go there, it sucks up my whole night.
and then i went home and finally made some charoset! yes i realize passover started forever ago, but i didn’t have my wine!!! and now i do :)

1, 11, and 19 for the Jumblr Ask Game!
Thank you for asking!
1. What are your favorite and least favorite Jewish foods?
I love challah, particularly the extra doughy homemade kind with chocolate chips.
I’m a vegetarian, so there’s a range of traditional shtel food I wouldn’t try for that reason (my mom has recipes for Ptcha, which is calves foot jelly, or lung strudel, for example). Out of the Jewish foods theoretically, on my menu, I really don’t care for fake breads/pizzas/whatever on Passover (the ones that are not chametz because of the bake time but just taste a bit rubbery).
11. What kind of, if any, Passover traditions do you and/or your family have?
I am THRILLED someone asked this of me. Please note I’m talking about normal, non-pandemic years here:
We do a big huge family gathering in Florida (again, pre-COVID).
We yeet marshmallows at the seder leader during the plague of hail.
Dayenu is basically a race. There’s a giant unspoken intake of breath and then we go really really fast and I love it.
There’s the Real Afikomen TM, but there’s also usually a bunch of fakes hidden too so you have to know what the cover actually looks like.
In my family all the kids and “kids” get a cut of the afikomen money, but whoever finds it does the bargaining and gets a little bonus.
We have a lot of the Ashkenazi-American Passover foods that are just a thing for whatever reason - the jelly rings, the coconut marshmallows, the macaroons, etc.
We don’t let anyone do the four questions alone - the two youngest (who are able to do it) do it in Hebrew together.
19. Do you have a favorite parsha (Torah portion)?
Probably Tzot HaBerachah and Breishet together on Simchat Torah, the beginner/end. I love that we have a defined cycle and some celebration when said cycle ends and I love being at a shul when they call up someone super old to do the first or last reading.

You said in a fic that Amaya and Sarai are Asian and Jewish coded in the show (I hope it was you anyway lmao), I know basically nothing about Jewish culture but like,,,, can you tell me more?? What makes them Jewish? Do you have any other Jewish headcannons for them? Idk, whatever you wanna write! Have a good day!
heeyy yeah i’m the one who said that! so first of all, i'm jewish, so the first thing i noticed were the jelly tarts, which are exactly like a pastry called hamantaschen we eat on a holiday called purim (halloween). then i saw a post about how sarai comes from "sara" which is the first jewish mother in our bible, and that ezran comes from "ezra", another name from the bible. idk if all of these were intentional, but the jelly tarts were, and it personality makes me very happy that my favorite characters have jewish hints about them- even if i'm reading into it too much
jewish culture... it mainly revolves around our holidays. i don’t wanna bore you, you can just google jewish holidays. i made a post with headcanons but i can’t find it now (thanks tumblr for your incredible search engine). i’m gonna put what i remember under a read more:
harrow’s favorite holiday is hanukkah, he loves the sufganiyot (only the simple, traditional, jam filled ones. he doesn’t like all the fancy variations). sarai’s favorite holiday is purim bc of the hamantaschen. she has a year long supply and won’t tell anyone where she gets it from
amaya’s favorite holiday is rosh hashana (new year’s eve, basically). she likes the apple dipped in honey, and her favorite treat is the bread dipped in sugar (instead of the usual salt)
janai’s not jewish but she’s crazy about lag baomer (its a day where everyone does bonfires). she almost asked amaya to marry her when she told her about it just so they can do it every year. they roast marshmallows over the fire.
callum and ezran love sukkot (we basically sleep in a tent for like a week. that sounds bad. you should really look it up) because of all the decorations they can make. sarai and harrow hang decorations they made as babies every year
everyone hate passover (you can’t eat anything with flour- only this dried bread we call matza). everyone want passover to be over. sarai broke the nice plates for the big dinner and didn’t tell harrow she did it. he mourns the plates still
i swear it’s all food with us
i’m not sure.. if harrow was jewish before he married sarai. maybe half? anyway he digs it all
everyone love shavuot tho. it’s basically a spring holiday where we eat a lot of diary food, so italian party it is. pizza, pasta, quiche, pastries. sarai LOVES it. it’s amaya’s cheat holiday so she eats whatever she wants
i’m just thinking about janai celebrating all of these with the family. it’s just so sweet *sobs*
“yeah i’m gonna marry this woman”
so this is all i’ve got. thank you so much for the ask! have a lovely day

Pizza Night (one-shot)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x reader Words: 1967 Summary: What makes this pizza night different from all other pizza nights? A/N: Happy holidays ;-) Something of a companion piece to Snowed In (thematically, anyway). Hope you enjoy! Let me know what you think.
Tumblr media
The third Sunday of every month is pizza night at the compound. Tony gets pizza delivered straight from the city, usually from a different place every month, for absolutely everyone—janitors, Avengers, programmers, medics, doctors, physical therapists…
And you.
Pizza night is one of your favorite traditions here. It’s less classy than the cocktail party-type get-togethers that Tony likes to throw; no mixed drinks, just water, soda, and beer for those inclined. And yes, you do like getting dressed up once in a while, but there’s effort involved, and your job is enough work, thank you very much.
Unwinding without expectations is nice.
Also, pizza.
“Hi Paul!” You slide into the passenger seat of your neighbor’s car and tuck your shopping bag between your feet. “Thanks so much for the ride.”
“No problem,” Paul says. He pulls away from the curb and drives towards the compound. “It’s literally five houses out of my way.”
“Yes, but still.” It’s cloudy but warm, so you open the window and let your hand dangle, catching the wind between your fingers. “How’s it feel to have tax season over?”
Paul groans in relief. “Oh my god, like freedom herself came and blessed me with those lottery days off last week.”
You laugh. Most accountants are dull as the grave, but Paul’s pretty funny, all things considered.
“What’s in the bag?” he asks.
“Oh…” You shift a little in your seat. “Just some stuff for tonight.”
“Fun,” he says.
“Mm.”
Your noncommittal answer doesn’t lead to a reply, and Paul turns on NPR. All Things Considered is good as far as radio shows go, but tonight your mind is wandering.
Pizza night’s going to be a little different this time around, and the thought of standing out makes your heart squeeze painfully. You’ve only been at this job long enough to take part in five, maybe six pizza nights, and you’re just starting to feel comfortable enough to make some waves. A suggestion for implementing a new project, a few more personal effects by your desk… It’s all gone well, but tonight?
You’re not sure.
It’s another fifteen minutes before you and Paul flash your security badges to the gate guard. There’s already a bunch of cars in the front lot—no surprise; the compound runs 24/7. Paul squeezes into a spot between two SUVs, and you suck in your breath to slip out of the car with your bag.
The second you walk into the right building, your mouth starts to water. You can smell it all—the bakery smell of the crust, the gooey cheese, the garlic. Even the tang of pepperoni, which you don’t eat.
It smells like a greasy pizzeria, replete with checkered tables and silvery napkin holders and rotating countertop displays with slices waiting to be shucked onto paper plates. It smells like a hole-in-the-wall with a gruff chef whose mouth would give Gordon Ramsay a run for his money. It smells like the kind of place you don’t wear white to.
It smells like heaven.
“Fuck,” you mutter, and Paul chuckles beside you.
“Eager, huh?”
“Not exactly.” You shift your bag to your other hand and try to keep your breathing steady.
Paul gives you a funny look, but he doesn’t push as you both climb up the lobby stairs to the lounge. He nods at you and makes a beeline straight for the buffet table. You don’t follow quite yet.
You pause by the top of the stairs as you take it all in. Maybe it’s a little cliché, but you still can’t quite believe your luck. How many people can say they work with superheros? Eat pizza with superheros? Sure, some of them are away right now—it’s Easter today, after all—but there are still plenty here tonight. Steve Rogers, of course, and his cute friend Bucky Barnes. Natasha Romanoff, Vision, Wanda Maximoff. Plenty of people.
Someone bumps into you, and you tighten your grip on your bag and make your way to the kitchen. It’s commercial-sized, with an oven the size of a closet full of oozing pizzas waiting to replace the ones on the buffet. You pause in front of it, gazing longingly at the rotating rack of pies, before one of the outside waitstaff ushers you aside.
You snag a plate from a cabinet and a spoon from a drawer. With a heavy heart, you open your shopping bag. Out comes a box, a bag of shredded mozzarella, a glass jar of marinara sauce. You carefully spread the sauce and sprinkle the cheese. Sixty-six seconds in the microwave, and you sigh as you pull the warm plate out.
“What’s that?”
You jump out of your skin. Natasha Romanoff is at your elbow, eyeing your plate curiously.
“Oh, uh, hi, Natasha.” You shift your weight, cheeks hot. “It’s matzah pizza.”
“Oh right,” Natasha says. “It’s Passover, isn’t it?”
“Yep.” You force a smile and squeeze by her to get back to the lounge, but she sticks to you.
“Isn’t all this—” she gestures to the pizza buffet as you pass by— “awfully tempting?”
You snort. “Of course! And it’s only day two.”
“Eight days?”
“Outside of Israel, yup.”
“And no bread?”
“No bread, no cake, no pasta—well, no normal pasta, anyway—no cereal, no oatmeal, no beer, no cookies,” you rattle off. “And I’m sure I’m missing something.”
Natasha puts a hand on your arm and leads to the couch she usually shares with some of the other Avengers. You sit down, head swimming with surprise. You usually hang out with coworkers from your department, not… the department.
Still, you do your best to smile at Steve, who’s next to you.
“How are—oh,” he says. He blinks at your pizza, then looks back at you with a sympathetic wince. “You’re brave.”
“I would go with masochistic before brave,” you reply. You take a deep breath, eyes fluttering shut for the briefest moment before you pull yourself together. A bite of matzah pizza does nothing to resolve the craving for real pizza. “This is hell.”
Steve chuckles. “So why’d you come?”
“Yeah, seriously,” Natasha chimes in. She’s perched on the arm of the couch beside you, a half-eaten slice of pizza folded in her hand.
“Eh, pizza night’s my favorite thing we have here,” you say. “It’s nice to hang out without having to think about work, you know?”
“Fair enough.”
“Bucky,” Natasha says suddenly, amusement dripping from her tone, “you look like a fish.”
You turn to look up at Bucky. His eyes are glued to your plate. To your pizza. He snaps his mouth shut and swallows, glancing down at his own plate. He’s got two big pieces of pepperoni pizza, one piled on top of the other.
“Something wrong, Buck?” Steve asks.
“No,” Bucky says, but you don’t buy it for a second.
Based on their raised eyebrows, neither do Natasha and Steve. Bucky nudges Steve’s leg with his boot, and Steve shifts over as much as he can.
Bucky sits down next to you, his thigh pressed against yours. He discards his pizza on the coffee table and sits back, still looking at your plate. Your mouth suddenly goes dry, pizza smell be damned. So close to Bucky, you’ve caught whiff of something a million times more intoxicating. He smells intoxicating, all heady and exhilarating and distinctively unique.
Greasy pizzeria as heaven?
No, heaven is sitting next to Bucky Barnes, his solid thigh against yours and his hand brushing your arm from where it’s slung on the back of the couch.
“You know,” he says, voice small and almost faraway, “the missions used to come to the front for Passover.”
You blink. Bucky is still looking at the matzah pizza on your plate.
“The front? You mean, during World War II?” you ask.
“Yeah.” His eyes flit to yours, his lips quirking up just enough to set your heart beating a little faster. “Those seders were the best part of the year.”
You gape. It can’t be attractive, but—Bucky Barnes is Jewish? Like you? It’s impossible.
“I don’t remember any,” Steve says. “What about ‘44?”
“Eh, by the time you came along, we had other things to do,” Bucky tells Steve, but he’s still facing you. He lowers his voice, ducks his head a little as his gaze tightens on yours. “Can I—did you bring that?”
You nod, thoroughly speechless.
“Can I have one?”
“Just one?” Natasha teases. You huff a little, half amused, half offended on Bucky’s behalf, but he’s rolling his eyes fondly.
“Of course,” you tell him. You force yourself up from the couch, left thigh cold from the loss of his leg pressed against yours. Is your face as warm as it feels? Can they all see? “Be right back.”
But Bucky jumps to his feet before you can make your escape. “You gotta show me how,” he says. He puts a hand on the small of your back and guides you through the crowd to the kitchen, greeting some of the waitstaff by name.
You’re not just speechless now; you’re breathless. His hand on your back, with just a thin shirt between his metal hand and your skin. His rich baritone, the gentle smile you can see out of the corner of your eye if you turn your head just a little.
Out comes the matzah, the sauce, the cheese. Bucky grabs a fresh plate and watches with careful focus as you assemble a matzah pizza for him.
“Can I do more cheese?” he asks.
“Eh, you could, but if you do too much it gets soggy.”
“Fair.”
You stand side-by-side in front of the microwave as you punch in sixty-six seconds. The microwave comes on with a whoosh.
“So,” Bucky says. “I didn’t know you were Jewish.”
Your lips twitch. “Bucky, I don’t think we’ve exchanged more than half a dozen words before tonight.” You raise an eyebrow at him, and he purses his lips in reluctant agreement. “But I didn’t know you were. And we learned about you all in school!”
“Well, my mom was. We didn’t practice or anything.” He tucks his hair behind his ear. “Not like you.”
“Everyone does it differently,” you say. “It’s all about what works for you.”
The microwave beeps, and Bucky pulls the plate out. “I haven’t really thought about it in ages,” he says. “But…” He smiles at you, eyes crinkling. “Maybe it’s time to see what works for me now that things have changed.”
“Hear hear!” You grin back. Never mind the heat in your cheeks—Bucky is smiling. At you. Who cares if you’re blushing? “No time like the present.”
“Amen,” he says. He lifts the plate close to his face and tries a bite of matzah pizza. His expression is thoughtful by the time he swallows. “I mean, it’s not as good as the stuff out there usually is, but it’s not bad.”
“I’ll be honest, I’m going to eat a whole pizza next month,” you tell him.
“Next month?” Bucky asks through another bite.
“Next pizza night,” you clarify.
He swallows, Adam’s apple bobbing on his pale neck. “How long is Passover? Eight days, right?”
“Yeah…?” You tilt your head, confused.
“Forget next month. We can go for some proper pizza next Sunday. I mean—if you want?”
Bucky’s blue eyes are wide, hopeful as he looks at you. You can’t help smiling. Pizza to end Passover is an old family tradition, one you thought you’d miss out on now that you’re living so far from home. But it’s like Bucky said.
Time to see what works, now that things have changed.
“I want,” you say, and he grins back, smile as bright as the moon.
“To pizza night,” he says, lifting his matzah pizza in a toast.
You bump elbows with him, heart soaring. “To pizza night.”

prompt six
the haggadah i am using this year offers a list of “ten deadly cocktails.” among these:
blood is called red nile, aka potato vodka
frogs are called paris in april, cognac chartreuse and grand marnier
hail becomes hailfire & brewski, ginger beer and white rum
darkness is cognac and absinthe…
passover has always been, in one way or another, about making symbols out of food. i think this cocktail thing takes it to the next level in a way that is honestly kind of terrifying—using food intentionally as symbolism is clever, but it can also go wrong when it becomes too literal or too mocking.
for this prompt—two foody options.
option one is to start from the best meal of your whole life. what were the components of it? what made it so good? pick one ingredient and tell its history without talking about the food itself or naming the ingredient. the goal is not to circle back to the original question, but to tell an entirely unexpected story (through any medium) somehow branching from your meal.
option two is to make a menu of any kind. i’m thinking photoshopped menu board, specials list behind a cafe counter, poem written in menu form, audio file with a favorite pizza order… anything is fair game as long as you are expressing a set of options and making it clear that not all of them are possible.
for an extra restriction: there must be bread.

Note
check out Bissli, if you can find it - it's an Israeli snack, and comes in flavors like pizza or taco. It should be in the kosher section, especially around passover. (it's my favorite, although most of the not-Jewish people I know don't like it much).
As sad as i sounds, my local store took out the Kosher section, they use to have Kosher snacks and stuff but its gone, I will keep a eye out tho.

Shemini 2.0
Hello HawkTorah peoples!  We hope your Passover is going well and you haven’t caved just yet (we’re counting down the hours until we can break our Passover with delicious Pepe’s Pizza).  This week the portion gets a little complicated.  Some Jews (most Reform and those in Israel) observe seven days of Passover while other Jews observe eight.  Now, usually this isn’t a problem, but it is this year because of Shabbat.  Passover started on Shabbat so we read a special portion.  For the first set of Jews, Passover ends before Shabbat this week and for the second set, this Shabbat is the last day of Passover.  The second group reads another special Passover Torah portion.  The first group splits parshat Shemini into two sections so that they do not finish Shemini before the other group reads it.  Are you confused yet?  It’s okay, so are we.  With that, we looked at both options and had some gut reactions to the first half of Shemini so we are going to go with that.
In this first half of Shemini, Aaron’s sons (Nadab and Abihu) are officiating as priests.  They start their sacrificing upon the altar, but bring “alien” or “strange” fire to the altar as offering.  This fire then leaps from the altar and consumes both Nadab and Abihu, killing them.  In the face of this tragedy, Moses says this to Aaron:
"This is what the Lord spoke, [when He said], 'I will be sanctified through those near to Me, and before all the people I will be glorified.”
Leviticus Chapter 10 Verse 3
Aaron was silent in response.  Why was he silent?  Why didn’t he scream out in grief?  This is actually quite normal - in many ways.  There is a difference between mourning and grief.  Mourning is when a person needs to adjust themselves to be able to deal with life in a world without the person or thing they just lost - it is usually silent and internal.  Grief, on the other hand, is people’s outward display of their mourning.  Aaron’s display was silence.  He couldn’t believe what just happened and how fast it did.  He literally just witnessed his two sons being killed by flame.  This is where Moses’ response comes in.  He basically said, “G-d loved them so much G-d wanted them to be with G-d”.  How many times has someone said that to you when you lost someone?  That’s right.  Too many times.  Does it help at all?  No, it absolutely does not.  However, this is how those people react to your loss.  People don’t want others to be upset or sad, so they try their best to make things better.
Everyone experiences loss differently.  Some people get angry.  Some are silent.  Some are unbelievably sad and cry a lot.  Some want to be around a lot of people.  Some want to be left alone.  All of this is totally normal.  If you find yourself in the role of Aaron, deal with your loss however you need to.  However, don’t let it consume you.  Reach out and get help when you need it.  Now, if you find yourself in the role of Moses, don’t say what he said.   Be careful with your words and support your friends and loved ones in whatever way they need.  Don’t push them and don’t just talk to talk - sometimes all that person needs is your presence and not your words.  Try not to relate their loss to one of your own, because it is not the same.  Every loss for every person is dealt with differently.  The best you can do in your role as Moses is just be there, whether physically or emotionally.  And the best you can do in your role as Aaron is take the time you need to heal and not let yourself be consumed by it.
Want to know what you do when you experience loss?  You buy a zoo.  You heard me right folks, no need to adjust those hearing aids or enlarge this text.  You buy a zoo.
Tumblr media
After the devastating loss of his wife, Benjamin Mee buys a zoo.  He also has to deal with his 14-year-old son Dylan acting out and getting expelled.  Along with Dylan, there is 7-year-old Rosie who is also struggling with the loss of her mother in her own way.  An interesting thing about this movie is how the children are dealing with the loss.  Dylan acts out and creates rather dark art.  He doesn’t really see the point in being happy and creating uplifting art.
Tumblr media
Rosie is dealing with a similar struggle but from the perspective of a 7-year-old.  She is dealing with the loss of her mom while noticing that the world hasn’t stopped.  She’s sad but everyone else is still happy.
Tumblr media
Benjamin decides it’s time for his family to move and him and Rosie decide on a nice house.  There is a catch, the house comes with a zoo that’s out back.  Benjamin takes on the challenge and is now the proud (?) owner of a zoo.
Tumblr media
There are a lot of struggles and it’s a big learning curve.  Ultimately the family begins to grow closer together, but there are some growing pains.  They aren’t the same people that they were before the loss of their mother/wife.  You aren’t the same after loss.  One of the best things to come out of this happens to be one of our favorite quotes:
Tumblr media
In conclusion, We Bought a Zoo is a great movie and you should watch it.
Tumblr media
Moving on, we have one more bonus tidbit of pop culture for you.  This one comes in the form of a book (there is a movie but it’s not that great please please please please please don’t watch it until you read the book).  The book is “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom aka Marissa’s favorite book (she definitely doesn’t own 3 copies of it….). A quick shoutout to Ms. Lewis (RIP) who introduced this book to me/my class freshman year of high school, it (and you) has (have) changed my life for the better.
For those of you who don’t know, “Tuesdays with Morrie” tells the story of Mitch Albom’s old college professor Morrie Schwartz who was diagnosed with ALS.  Mitch visits with Morrie every tuesday and discuss life.  There’s more to it than that but you’ll just have to go read it.
Have a great rest of your Passover, however long you choose to observe it!

Exodus 12:31-50 My husband enjoys making pizza dough from scratch and recently has also made soft pretzels from scratch. They are delicious, but they require yeast, and yeast takes time. But the night the Israelites left Egypt, there was no time to let dough rise. God was so specific, the instructions were repeated, and His people followed His directions (Wahoo!!). God knows what is good for us, He knows what we will need ahead of us and He provides before we even know.
This night was the first Passover. God fulfilled His promise. AND, God wants us to CELEBRATE the GOOD He has done with a yearly festival! Have you ever marked your calendars for remembering something yearly? What about one of my favorites- celebrate your Baptism Birthday yearly?! We can celebrate a job long waited for, really, any good news long waited for, and mark it yearly on our calendars because we need those reminders of good times and the blessings we can be so thankful for because our Heavenly Father provided for us.
Heavenly Father, thank you for being So good to us! I suppose if we had a calendar set aside specifically for you, you would fill all the days with something to rejoice about because you are that Wonderful to us! Help us to follow your directions and help us to remember to celebrate your love for us! In Your Son's Name, Amen!

Pizza Chanukah night 3
the sunset a few hours ago, always workin….no rest for the wicked etc etc
now I’m pretty sure pizza king is a local favorite, so if you cant find one, try another local favorite….there are a few nights this week with local flavors so it helps to know your local pizza scene.
Chabad.org explains the third night as…
Third Night—Dedicated to Decisions: The Hallway
Imagine yourself in a hallway, an endless corridor. Before you an offering of options, a series of dark wood doors; each opening widens with opportunity, each offers an unknowable path, letting you choose, demanding you move, challenging you to act. Which door do you lunge for?
It is the narrowness that leads to expansionThe hallway is where I will my way through the world. It is the narrowness that leads to expansion, where one knock determines whole destinies. This hallway calls for precision, decision, the analysis of options, the care and the courage to choose true, exact, correct. This corridor is the tension before any great act—when the moment calls for a deeper determination to raise it from the vast heap of mundane happenings, to let it become a great occurrence in the course of life.
This night is dedicated to direction, to making decisions in the dark, to taking the leap of faith that leads to miracles. From the narrowness of the Greek domination, the Maccabees chose no less than the doorway to vastest freedom. They did not remain confined, nor walk through assimilation’s passive door, but rather lunged for the doorway of self-dominion and independence, fearless of the fight on the other side.
Standing in a hollow hallway, doorways blinding my eyes, I contemplate the path to my future, light three candles as my guide.
regardless tonight we usually watch the rugrats passover, which is episode 23, season 3 not Chanukah related but ya know...not too many Chanukah movies
till later, Shalom
~Hoover

Passover was a really big deal when I was a kid. We had the second seder at our house, with upwards of 20 aunts, uncles and cousins swarming over the place. Our cousins Janet and Barry even brought their dog; Mom couldn’t stand dogs but she made an exception for Dusty.
Dusty is still one of my alltime favorite dogs, although I believe Janet and Barry prefer Custer, their next dog. And now that I think of it, Custer is a weird name for a dog.
Jimmy Fallon said in an interview once that when he was growing up, his parents didn’t have friends. They had brothers and sisters and cousins. Says I to myself on hearing that: Holy crap. I thought that was just us. My parents socialized frequently, but it was almost always with people genetically related. Though my Dad did have one or two old friends he grew up with, whom he saw once or twice a year.
Mom was usually not a great cook, but she did a great job with the seder, working for days and putting on the full spread. Mom and Dad seldom drank, but they had a little wine with dinner – Manischewitz and Mogen David, of course! – and laughed a lot. My uncle Nat and Aunt Harriet were the only real drinkers in the family; my parents kept a bottle of vodka in the house for when they came to visit. We told the same jokes every year and never got tired of them.
To this day I am only a social drinker. I like beer and wine and Jameson’s and I went on a martini kick for a few years. But I don’t drink when I’m at home and I can go for weeks and months without having alcohol, and I do not miss it.
We kept kosher for Passover for the full eight days. The rest of the year we were lax. I like to say that we were pizza-and-chinese-food-on-paper-plates kosher – the foods we kept in the house were kosher, and we kept the proper two sets of plates, one for meat and one for dairy. But we brought in pizza and Chinese food regularly, and when we did, we ate it on paper plates. When I was an adult, it took me some time to get used to eating pizza on regular dishes.
I loved matzoh during Passover, and gobbled it up plain, or with margarine, rendered chicken fat or cream cheese. I never got tired of matzoh during Passover, but I stopped eating it and switched back to bread the moment I could, and never had matzoh, or wanted it, the rest of the year.
