My trip to Kaua'i, Hawai'i
Tumblr media
Yellow Hibiscus: The state flower of Hawai'i. Called the “pua mao hau hele” or “Ma’o hau hele” in the Hawaiian Language (ʻŌlelo).
Tumblr media
Nēnē (Hawaiian Goose): The rarest waterfowl in the world. Nearly brought to extinction in 1990 with 50 wild individuals. Captive-breeding programs and reintroduction efforts have given the native nēnē a chance with now over 3,862 birds statewide. I was lucky enough to see wild nēnē goslings. Very special.
Tumblr media
Honu (Green Sea Turtle): An endangered species most commonly found near the Hawaiian Island Chain. Typically reaching sexual maturity around 20 years of age, Green sea turtles nest on the same beach where they hatched. This is a photo I took of a female rising up from the shore to lay her eggs.

Landscape photos I took on my trip in Kaua'i.
Kaua'i is one of many islands comprising the Hawaiian Volcanic Island Archipelago. I bought a Kaua'i Geologic History Book to learn more about the island and I am very excited to read it.

Milestone Monster: The Oliphaunt of Jandelay
Tumblr media
CR 30
Chaotic Neutral Titanic Outsider
Mythic Realms, pg. 58-59 (pic taken from Adventure Path: Rise of the Runelords: Sins of the Saviors, pg. 63)
Only once in all of recorded history has the Oliphaunt of Jandelay trod on soil outside its home plane, called to Golarion by a powerful archmage--one of the Runelords, no less--and used as the mother of all siege animals against his enemies. In its footprints, lakes grew and cities disappeared. Where it passed, mountains moved aside and valleys formed below it, if only to keep its back from scraping the sky. A churning storm of incredible proportions heralded its arrival and marked its departure, the weather itself seeming to fight alongside the Oliphaunt as though the grand storm saw kindred in the apocalyptic beast.
It is a titan in all but name, a monstrosity of such immense size that it appears to be a mountain from a distance. The Spindletorn, over a thousand feet tall, was created by the Runelord who sought to command the Oliphaunt to give him just enough height to look the beast in the eye. This is because the destroyer is utterly immune to all mind-affecting effects unless it can draw line of sight to the creature using them, and most creatures are simply too far beneath its notice for it to even bother separating them from the background. Even then, the caster in question must know how to naturally speak fluent Celestial or the infinitely more bizarre Jandelayan (language-cheating magic such as Tongues does not work!) AND speak loudly enough to be heard over the rumble of its footsteps and the roaring storm that surrounds it, or the Oliphaunt may ignore any attempt to subvert its will.
The feat of calling it into the world has not been replicated since, as the method of stealing the Oliphaunt from its home was lost alongside the Runelord that first performed the deed, who was either executed for his calamitous crime or destroyed by the retribution of Jandelay when it recalled its creator, slave, and guardian. When Runelord Gimmel gained command over the great beast, he thought himself unstoppable, but what he did not know was the great Guardian of Jandelay makes new saves against every effect holding it in a new plane each day, even if the effect doesn’t normally offer a save. Once it succeeds, it is pulled back into Jandelay... and everything and everyone within five miles of the beast is utterly destroyed. Every creature within the sphere is targeted with Mass Hold Monster (DC 30 Will to avoid), and then the entire 5-mile bubble is wracked with a perpetual Earthquake and Storm of Vengeance that rages for 1d12 months, assuring nothing remains but the memories of those who managed to escape.
It caused a terrifying disaster when it was present, and a worse one when it left. The armies of the Runelords could not best the beast, what hope would something as inconsequential as a group of adventurers have to best such a beast?
Quite a bit of hope, actually. In fact, I advise DMs to play with the system a little in regards to how the Oliphaunt operates, especially since the art of it remains relatively inconsistent with its implied scale. The Spindlethorn is over a thousand feet tall, yet all art of the great beast portrays it as maybe a hundred or so feet, much smaller than any of the Kaiju, which it shares much with (including the fact it’s saddled with the Massive rule). The landscape of the land it moved through is supposed to have irrevocably altered, with its footprints forming new lakes, mountains pushed aside or trod over and reduced to rubble, and entire cities wiped out just by it walking through them. It’s of impossible size and world-shaking power, far beyond anything a normal party should be able to handle were it to turn its attention on them... which is why I recommend, among other things, that the Oliphaunt’s statblock represent a small part of the beast; a section of its back or head that the party has made it to in order to break some device or magic that’s been put into place by a third party. The majority of its attacks aren’t purposeful actions, but things like incidental footsteps, swings of its trunk, thrashes of its head, the lashings of the storm that surrounds it and the backlash of the Wards of Jandelay that coat its body seeking to defend it. That last one is especially fun to imagine, as the Wards already grant it numerous defensive abilities, so why not some offense as well?
I also enjoy the potential narrative change of what its 740 HP represents. Reducing that to 0? That’s doesn’t kill it, that drives it back. It’s still the victory condition, but rather than to slay the Oliphaunt, it’s to break whatever is holding it in the plane to send it back to Jandelay without triggering the retributive destruction of the Guardian of Jandelay (and if it’s already in Jandelay and the players are somehow there too, it should be completely unassailable). The preservation of the Oliphaunt’s mystique is what I aim for with this, especially since--as written--the Oliphaunt doesn’t come back if it’s slain, which is a little odd considering what it is and what it represents.
But what does it take for a party to drive back a living apocalypse? A lot of damn effort. It has DR 20/Epic and Regeneration 35 that’s suppressed only by Acid damage from a Mythic source, and that’s just the start! The Wards of Jandelay that protect the beast raise its AC all the way up to 50, and even its touch AC is an impressive 30 despite its size. It’s also shielded by 41 SR, immune to any mind-affecting effect that comes from a creature it cannot draw line of sight to, and any attempt to get in front of it without the use of physical flight or (as Runelord Gimmel tried) climbing up and meeting the beast’s eye is thwarted by the enormous aura that surrounds it: a 500ft bubble radiating off its body in every direction that forces any creature attempting to use any form of teleportation or dimension-hopping (including but not limited to Etherealness, Shadow Walk, and Plane Shift) into, out of, or within the bubble to succeed a DC 41 Will save or the attempt fails. The Oliphaunt even shuts off Gate automatically without allowing a save unless the creator of the effect is either Mythic or an Artifact, so if you want to maneuver around in the bubble with minimal resource use, it’s going to be via actual running/flying.
... I do not actually recommend flying. Not only is this a good way to draw the Oliphaunt’s incredibly dangerous attention, but it’s also surrounded by a Weather Sphere that’s 5 miles in diameter, and inside this sphere it has complete control of the environmental conditions. It doesn’t matter the season or the setting, the Oliphaunt can create blizzards in a summer desert with nothing more than a thought. It can change the weather inside the sphere once per round as a free action, though for obvious reason it tends to stick with destructive storms (which are difficult to fly in, even with magic). Hurricane-force winds, tornadoes, and deadly lightning spring up constantly around it, harmless to the mountainous beast but devastating for everything around it. Once per round as another free action, the Oliphaunt can call down a bolt of lightning to deal 5d10 damage to anything it can see so long as its weather sphere is set to stormy, which is just a little bit more damage on top of what it can already do.
Whatever section of the Oliphaunt the players are standing on takes up an 80ft square, and though the beast has an 80ft reach, it’s also Massive, so no AoOs against a typical party anyway. Getting onto its back or head to attack it should be the plan, as fighting it from below simply shouldn’t be a viable option. Anyone trying should take the Oliphaunt’s 4d10+25 trample damage every round! Each of its other natural attacks deal 4d10+17 damage each, except for its trunk, which deals 4d8+8 damage instead. Via its stats, it has 2 slams, 4 gore attacks with its massive tusks, and a bite attack, but as per my recommendations, re-characterizing these to be lashings of the storm, the rolling and thundering of the Oliphaunt’s body, and the Wards along its form attacking any creature on it are all possible. The Wards being the aggressor especially make sense in regards to the Ruinous Tusks ability, normally allowing its gore attacks to be treated as adamantine and also automatically afflict any creature they strike with Greater Dispel Magic! which, since it can make four such attacks a round, means it shreds through buffs and defensive magic with frustrating ease and swiftness. That’s basically what creatures need at this level to overcome the buffs that high-level people slather on themselves like sunscreen, but that doesn’t change the fact it’s terrifying from the player’s perspective to have their protection AND hitpoints shredded at the same time.
Perhaps one of the few limbs of the Oliphaunt that could reasonably join in on the battle are its massive ears swatting at troublesome players (is two slams), and of course its winding trunk. The trunk deals the least damage of all its attacks, easily characterized by it simply being too big to impact a creature directly, like a gnat slipping through the holes of a fly swatter, but it carries the threat of Grabbing and constricting victims for 4d8+25 damage each round the grapple isn’t broken. Any creature grappled by the trunk (or the beast’s bite attack/imprisoned by the mystic wards) can also be drawn inside the great beast’s mouth(/constricted by the magic) to take 4d10+17 further damage every round. Unlike many creatures with Swallow Whole, cutting one’s way out of the Oliphaunt presents a secondary danger in simply falling hundreds of feet to the ground.
I find it more than a little amusing that the Oliphaunt has spell-likes, though giving up its potential full-attack to use them is silly. It can use Greater Shout at will, presumably because of its trumpeting, to deal 10d6 Sonic damage to everything in a 60ft cone and potentially stunning and deafening victims. It also can use Transmute Rock to Mud 3/day for reasons I can scarcely understand, since a single footstep has roughly the same effect as the spell upon terrain. Maybe if it needs to mire an army, rather than to destroy it? I don’t know. If the storms don’t stop an army from marching against it, I can’t imagine that a little mud will. It’s strange that it has spells with such minor effects, when compared to the destruction it can wreak simply by walking from Point A to Point B.
One of the strangest things about the Oliphaunt to me, though, is that it’s not actually a mindless beast. it has the Intelligence and Wisdom of a normal human, and even possesses enough ranks in a few Knowledge skills to give it superhuman insight into Arcana, Religion, and Planes. It has a curious amount of Diplomacy, enough to be able to sway any entity it deigns to speak to, though there’s never been a mention of it speaking to anyone. It speaks Celestial and Jandelayan, one uncommon and one unheard of, but that it can speak at all is surprising. Who has heard the Oliphaunt’s voice? What does it say, and to whom?
All of these skills aren’t being used to speak with the Watchers, who are always invisible to its senses (and who fear and worship it), their Inconspicuous ability bypassing its Ward Against Command entirely. So who exactly is it speaking to, if anyone? Who is it using its Knowledge to impress and understand? Who is it using Diplomacy to sway and Intimidate to cow, and who is it using Sense Motive to gain insight into, if not the Watchers or the Collected? It’s said the Collected fear it immensely, grow terrified when it approaches their lands, but this is understandable given its size and what it represents. If such a beast approached me, even with gentle intent, I would be a little spooked too. Maybe it’s Jandelay itself it communes with?
For all the lore it has which tells of the destruction it wreaks with its mere existence, for all the talk of it representing destruction and calamity, it did create Jandelay explicitly to preserve worlds that had been destroyed, at least in some fashion. It protects the realm and is protected by it in turn, and only when removed from its museum of lost worlds does it lash out so violently until its creation, its home, its child, calls it back and wracks the world that took it in the with terrible storms and neverending earthquakes. Elephants are gentle creatures by their nature, lashing out only when provoked, and who’s to say the same is not true for the Oliphaunt of Jandelay? The only example of its behavior ever seen on Golarion is when it was stolen from its land and controlled by a madman seeking conquest.
Perhaps it shares more than a little in common with its fellow CR 30 Colossal and unwillingly apocalyptic Leviathan.

LOZ Character Analysis/Rant
 The Hero of Time
Tumblr media
‘the flow of time is always cruel’
Forced to grow up too quickly, to abandon childhood and embrace adulthood for the sake of his destiny and kingdom. Neither Ganondorf nor Majora were the true villains. Time itself as always been Link’s true enemy.
Ironic that history will forever champion him as The Hero of Time.
~~~
To be honest he never struck me as the cold serious type. I feel like he only became hardened and jaded as his perspective on his past experiences changed with age. I mean, look at that goofy kid! He was a mischievous little gremlin back in the day and I won’t hear otherwise. He would have been very sociable with the forest children, playing games, playing pranks and living a carefree life.
At least subconsciously, he was aware that he was different to the Korkiri. This would have been pointed out to him due to him being the only one without a bonded fairy until much later in life and the fact that everyone was aware that he was growing up. This wouldn’t have been a major concern for him at the time. It would be 7 years later.
The inciting incident that spurs his adventure is the death of his mentor figure: The Great Deku tree. This would have had a profound effect on the young boy, but the send off was so inspiring that more than anything it motivates Link to fulfil his new role. The Deku tree recounts to Link the creation story of the three Golden Goddesses and the business with Ganondorf. At the time much of this would have flown over Link’s head who was probably more focused on the fact that his tree dad was dying and the job he needed to do.
Much later in life though, realising that there are supposedly benevolent beings with infinite power who created this world who sit around and let fiends like Ganondorf cause such misery would add to his jaded view of the world.
Leaving the Korkiri forest must have been bittersweet, especially since he had to do it alone, for the forest children could not leave (I feel like if Saria could, Link would have wanted her to join him). The first part of OoT must have been a blast for child Link. For a short time he got to go out and explore Hyrule with no strings attached, a truly free kid (many characters refer to him as a child quite often: ‘kid’, ‘lad’, ‘fairy boy’).
At his young age he didn’t properly grasp the severity of the situation, and saw the quest as fun. To his credit, things were going great, he met princesses (and got engaged to a fish princess! He would’ve looked forward to bragging to Mido about it), wrangled himself a loyal horse and explored the land (bet this cinnamon roll had planned to bring back gifts for his friends in the forest).
Then Ganondorf pulled the rug out from everyone and great googly boogly, it all went to shit.
The shock of waking up from what he probably initially assumed was a nap must have traumatised him. Imagine waking up to realise you had missed out on puberty, see the kingdom in ruins, your woodland father figure is dead, your childhood friend/crush is dead and it’s your job to fix everything.
He did everything perfectly up until now. None of this was deserved.
At first he might have felt guilty for abandoning the kingdom, but honestly I think that would have dissolved into sheer anger the more he thought it through. Since he was a child, nothing regarding the 7 year coma can really be attributed to him specifically. And being 9 I don’t think that would register until much later in his life, but due to the confusing nature of the whole thing, he wouldn’t know who to blame or what to direct his anger to. Hence the bitterness he carries with him.
Fi obviously didn’t want him to perish. She did what she did to give him the best fighting chance, but perhaps it was poor judgment on her part to prioritise the wellbeing of her master over that of the kingdom. It was the right call in terms of protecting the hero, but it screwed over literally everyone else. Not to mention that the Royal Family and Raru had been duped by Ganondorf and Zelda/Lullaby had been forced into hiding.
All in all, I don’t think the 7 year coma was anyone’s fault; the forces of good made their moves and Ganondorf just outplayed them.
Link himself wasn’t a much of a player at all, more like a variable both sides used in order to outplay the other. The outcome of this struggle behind the scenes was cruel and unfair in the eyes of the hero. He’d done what he was told, he had purified the Zora and Goron’s guardian deities, he had collected all the sacred elemental gemstones and was ready to claim the power that was his birthright.
Raru, Fi, Hylia, the Goddesses even the Royal Family failed the Hero of Time. But he wouldn’t have thought this back then because he believed that he was destined for greatness. He’d been told by the Deku tree that he’d accomplish amazing things and save the kingdom. In his mind, he had failed.
Since Time still pretty much had the mind of a child in the latter half of OoT, he probably deviated from the main quest, unable to resist the need to help the suffering people. The sight of the kingdom he’d just explored now in such disharmony, a twisted corrupted version of itself, must have been awful. The kingdom had already been taken over, so there was no real need to hurry, he just needed to focus on building up his strength and make sure he defeated Ganondorf. It probably also took him a fat while to get used to his new body.
Because of this, I’m genuinely not surprised that there’s a canon outcome where he dies to Ganon. The odds were against him from the get-go. There was no way he was going to be at his best when he was still mentally 9 and in a body he’d barely gotten any experience in. Maybe he misjudged a sword strike, overestimated his reach or underestimated his speed. It wouldn’t have taken much, just one small mistake for it all to be over.
On the flip side, following the outcome where he does win, it would be a massive boost in ego. Not in an arrogant way, more just in self assured confidence. The fact that he was able to overcome all that despite the trash hand dealt by the Gods and his own weapon, would give him the attitude of not fearing what life throws at him. Although it wouldn’t make him reckless, it would be the reason why he’d continue to go out adventuring and helping people. He has the hero’s spirit after all, going out of his way to do what’s right is in his nature.
The trauma from speedrunning childhood was probably the main reason he allowed Zelda to send him back in time. That, and to expose Ganondorf before he can cause all that devastation. He probably thought it would be exclusively beneficial for him and the kingdom, by way of erasing those 7 years of hardship under Ganondorf’s takeover...not splitting the timeline. I feel like Zelda knew it would cause a timeline split (she has the Triforce of Wisdom, she 100% knew and you can’t tell me otherwise) and leave her timeline without a hero, but purposefully put his wishes above that of hers and the kingdom. Maybe out of pity and/or guilt.
To protect him, she didn’t mention that teeny weeny world shattering detail.
Regarding Sheik, I think Time would have liked and respected them a lot during OoT, taking comfort in their guidance. Probably saw them in an older sibling sort of light, quickly feeling comfortable to joke around with them and maybe confide a bit too. I don’t know how he’d feel about them being Zelda, because I don’t know how he’d feel about Zelda herself. It wouldn’t be overwhelmingly positive though, some of that unyielding bitterness would be directed at her I’d imagine.
After all he lost everything, his father-figure, his best friends, his childish innocence and doesn’t even have a home to return to anymore. But Zelda? When all this is said and done she can return to her life of privileged luxury, ready to rule the kingdom healed by the Hero of Time (and the sages too). To be fair that’s adult-timeline Zelda, child-timeline Zelda isn’t really the Zelda he knew, but he probably isn’t too keen on having much to do with her either.
I feel like there would be things from both OoT and MM he’d struggle to get over later in life, due to him being so young when he experienced them.
Needless to say he never touched the Master Sword again.
His desperation to find Navi at the end of OoT is interesting though. It shows that he cares about her, but she wasn’t kidnapped or went missing...she left him. It’s possible Link thought she just needed to go somewhere, but I don’t think that was the case.
No matter the reason, it was for all intensive purposes, a dick move. Because even if you’re not a Korkiri, I believe you can still make it into the forest if you have a fairy companion to guide you. Be doing this, she effectively locks Link out of the Korkiri forest, banishing him from his childhood and robbing him of the chance to live in carefree peace with the forest children. So aside from missing her, he probably chased after her because without her, he can never return home.
And we know in LU that years later she still hasn’t come back...
During his life leading up to LU, he was probably going with the flow. There was no way back into the Korkiri forest without Navi, so he sort of aimlessly roamed around Hyrule and went wherever there was adventure. Helping anyone who needed it, taking down dangerous monsters and travelling around the kingdom. He didn’t think of it as a job and didn’t take it too seriously, he knew he had the power to do good so like his predecessors before him, and did what was right because he could.
I do like the idea that sometime before LU, maybe in his mid twenties, there was an incident where he used the Fierce Deity mask and something went horribly wrong. He ended up defeating whatever forced him to resort to that power, but it resulted in the Fierce Deity almost possessing him, or the power itself tried to take over for a moment- either way it lead to the missing eye and tattoos.
I have a fair bit more to say on the Fierce Deity...but I’ll leave it there for now.
Time never saw the masks he collected as toys. Some were connected to the dead, one housed a very powerful entity and therefore needed to be treated with respect. Keeping the collection mostly to honour those they represented and maybe also as proof of the adventure. MM was another thankless quest, no one outside of Termina (which may or may not exist) knows what happened there, so he could tell stories using the masks as evidence that he wasn’t full of shit.
That being said, his skill as a swordsman and warrior would be enough for most to believe him. He’s had a long while to master the blade and was probably besting even the most skilled knights in the Hyrulean Army while back in his child body after OoT. He can use a bunch of different items, shoot a bow with deadly accuracy and even do a nifty bit of magic.
Unfortunately, due to his circumstances his intelligence stat capped off mid-way through childhood. Filling his time with adventure and daring do meant he wasn’t exactly hitting the books and making up for the lost years of homeschooling...or tree-schooling in his case. As such, he’s a very slow reader, his handwriting is like that of a 4th grader’s, his arithmetic is excellent as long as the numbers don’t get to big or the math more complex than adding, subtracting and multiplying. Also statistics and fractions smaller than 1/4 mean basically nothing to him.
In his defence, what’s reading a few books compared to year’s worth of life experience? This man is wise beyond his years, always aware of his surroundings and one could say he’s very much a people person. The only thing that didn’t improve with age is his cringe humour.
Since the Hero’s Shade looked heavily armoured, it seems likely that Time was officially signed up to the army but maybe as a reserve and has had knight’s training once he became old enough to enlist. Things didn’t go smoothly after Ganondorf was outed by kid Lullaby and Time. The King of Thieves didn’t get arrested lying down, he got arrested after a long drawn out bloody conflict with the Royal Family.
This conflict led to the Gerudo being chased out the desert and the reuse of their Spirit Temple, turning it into a prison: the Arbiter’s Grounds. Time couldn’t fight in this war because it happened when he was still a kid (could have ended when he was in his mid teens) and since he isn’t known as the legendary hero there was no way the army would let a minor fight in their ranks. He wouldn’t have risked pulling out the Master Sword to prove his status, for fear of Fi putting him in stasis again or Ganondorf having access to the Triforce and Sacred Realm.
He may be bitter towards the Master Sword, but he’s downright hateful of Royal Family. He saw evidence of the atrocities the Sheikah committed under their orders in the Shadow Temple, their cruelty towards the Gerudo and incompetence to stop Ganondorf in his original timeline. Hence why he spends his life doing his own thing rather than rise the ranks of their army.
Music is incredibly important to him. It not only serves as a meaningful connection to Saria and the life he once had, but it’s also how he interacts with the world and enforces his will on it. Again, as a kid he only saw the ocarina as a practical little instrument that could do cool things (btw I know for a fact that Time would never drop Saria’s ocarina or favour it to Zelda’s, even if it’s something the player can do. He wouldn’t do it willingly, only resorting to it if he needed space for a item that could save his life), but as he grew into an adult appreciated its connection to space as well as time.
He may travel alone, but that’s mostly due to the sense of isolation he acquired from his experiences and the burden of bearing the God-like power of the Fierce Deity. On days off or when he feels he needs a break, he’ll seek out the company of those he cares about. Those relationships would have started from scratch, because in this timeline no one remembers him and courageous acts he committed to save Hyrule.
Still has a deep connection to the Korkiri forest. Even though he couldn’t return. It’s a safe bet to assume that the Hero’s Shade is in fact a Stalfos. What if the reason he risks going into the Lost Woods without a fairy guide was because he’d heard news that the Korkiri Forest was falling into decay. The Deku tree still dies in this timeline and without a new sapling to replace him, the forest dies. What if Link went to try and save the forest by finding a new sapling, only to find himself lost and cursed to forever roam the haunted woods as the Hero’s Shade. All while his home slowly perishes.
Leaving the forest in the decrepit state seen in Twilight Princess, with the hollow husk of the Deku Tree serving as the game’s first dungeon. Who knows the fate of the Korkiri...
Twilight’s existence makes him exceedingly happy. Before that revelation, he probably didn’t think too much about stuff like legacy, descendants and passing down his skills. He’d have a funny view on nostalgia. Spent most of his life not putting too much thought into the past or dwelling on a future that may not come to past if he doesn’t make it back from an adventure. Until he gets a family of his own. The normalcy and security his wife and kid(s) bring will finally have him looking at the past fondly and the future with hope.
I’ll leave you with a couple more famous OoT quotes:
‘melody that will draw you into infinite darkness’
‘A childish mind will turn into noble ambition’
Thanks for reading!
I truly believe that this incarnation of Link is one of the most interesting. Imagine what having control over yet being completely at the mercy of the flow of time would do to a person. There are lots of other interpretations you can pull from Link’s experience on OoT and MM, which is a testament to the incredible game design.
Expect edits every now and then for posts like these. They take a while to write and I don’t always proofread...
Good day to you. I hope you have a great day.
I just came across your Snow White gif set. And I believe if we share media online we should be open for constructive criticism. I do hope it is alright with you to share a few thoughts with you. Snow White has been a creation of the brothers Grimm. Have you ever read the German original books? In them she is meant to be the prettiest of them all. This can naturally be interpreted in different ways but the whole "fair" thing you pointed out, might just be a big confusion since the translation isn't quite right. In general we analysed that the translation of Snow White never seems to encompass the context quite like the original work of the brothers Grimm does.
But the matter-of-fact context of what the queen is doing and how Snow White is being seen in "Snow White" is: The queen wants to be as pretty as Snow White. She is jealous. The queen knows her beauty and judges herself only by her outward appearance. She doesn't believe in the power of inner values, but defines herself exclusively through her looks. This is how she defines Snow White as well. The story itself revolves solely around looks. Only the queen's beauty counts. This makes her bitter. She clings desperately to the straw of “beauty” and lets the mirror confirm to her every day that she really is the most beautiful woman around. "Spieglein Spieglein an der Wand, wer ist die Schönste im ganzen Land?" (mirror mirror on the wall, who is the prettiest of them all?) "Frau Königin, Ihr seid die Schönste." (miss queen, you are the prettiest).
After this understanding has been established, one can start philosophizing. Does the queen have anxiety? Is Snow White naive? Too innocent? Too trusting? Is the queen sociophobic? Crazy?
I know today's younger generation tries to find more meaning in the writing's of old authors and poets, especially in regards to men treating women mysoginistic. Female empowerment is as big as never before these days. However, I doubt that your point of view regarding Snow White is accurate since you can't apply a story written in the early 1800s to how we see women today. And it would be absurd to try. That's what historians like myself would never dare. And I know it's hard to accept but people should simply just accept it. It is a part of history. I get why people wanna put today's values on how we regard Snow White or how we should regard her, but there is really nothing wrong with just taking the fairy tale the way it's meant to be and like it as such either. I think that's my main point why I try reaching out to you. No one is being "evil" if they treat Snow White the way it was written without adding modern ideologies to it. At the end of the day it is a ficticious story and not based on reality, which is something else a lot of people seem to forget. In the early 1800s, fairy tales like of the Brother's Grimm were mostly meant to educate children and help the young working class escape their own reality. Do not take candy from strangers, do not walk too far into the woods (Hänsel und Gretel), do not play with fire (Struwwelpeter), cut your hair and nails or you will look dirty and nobody will want to be near you (Struwwelpeter). The early to mid 1800s were about looks, about listening to your parents, about obeying the rules of authority, of being respectful to those that tell you not to do something.
Today's Disney tires to make out Snow White someone she originally was not meant to be. Just one glance at your gif set and I can tell she is a lot more outgoing, self-confident, knows her value. Snow White from 1812 wasn't like that at all. She was shy, had little understanding of what outward beauty even meant. She was the typical personification of how women and young girls were supposed to act like back then. Of course you and everyone else are totally allowed to interpret any story however you want and I'm really not trying to force my opinion on you I swear. I just wanted to share my bit of how historians intrepreted your gif set (guilty as charged). I'm studying history in Mainz, Germany (and I'm no longer in my 40s, which I think should be mentioned here) and the subject seems to be one of the most sensitive ones I've ever studied and analysed but in all honesty, not because a debate about it can't happen in a mature and understanding manner, but because people have become so overly sensitive they simply don't accept historic facts, if said facts don't suit their social media, modern 2k22 word view. It's sad to learn about history in a way that if you mention certain old-fashioned (modern in their respective period) things to people, they immediately victimize themselves because how dare you say those things, I feel attacked. They haven't even lived in those times to be able to judge because generally speaking they are not the victims. If anything, women who were living just like Snow White back in 1812 were. But again, trying to compare the 1800s and the 2000s is quite impossible. Doing it will always result in a change of originality of history.
It's insane. Studying history has become so hard, even sharing my thoughts with you now, I wasn't sure if I should do it off anon or not, simply for the fact that I wouldn't know who's gonna tear me apart for trying to respectfully educate someone on something I believe has been misinterpreted. Anyway, maybe this will never be answered either, I leave that up to you. I respect the work you do on your account. Your gifs are flawless. Have a nice day.
Hey! Thank you for taking the time to write this. I believe you're referring to this gif of mine from my Ralph Breaks the Internet series:
Tumblr media
I appreciate you trying to educate me, but I want to clarify that I wasn't touting to be an expert on the 1812 version of Snow White. This was a humorous, spoof like post that was made of a meta-textual film that was released in 2018 (Ralph Breaks the Internet) commenting on a film property from 1937 (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs). So, already, I'm removed from the Snow White you're speaking of. The Disney film, while an adaption of the Snow White you're referencing, is a loose adaption and is its own thing. You cannot apply 1812 to Disney's Snow White for a myriad of reasons. There's the obvious differences in plot (Snow White and the Prince meet prior to him kissing him, Snow White only gets poisoned once instead of three times, etc) but also Disney's Snow White is clearly echoing Old Hollywood in a way that isn't time period accurate to the tale you're referencing (from Snow White's hairstyle to her bare arms, etc).
When it comes to the morals and ideologies you suggest, I have a different take than yours. For starters- and I'd like to reiterate this- I was posting about the values in 1937's Snow White, not the 1812 version. For example, if I ever do a defense post for Cinderella, I am purely commenting on Disney's 1950 version. I am never ever defending Lily James' Cinderella. But, back to the topic at hand, as you mentioned the story published originally is in German and the Disney creative team that interpreted and wrote the 1937 screenplay and designed the film was based in America, so they were working from a translation. This already sets up a difference between the two. To illustrate an example, the English dubbing of Cinderella from 1950 that's original and canonical states clearly that Cinderella's dreams are of happiness. However, the French dubbing that came later on rewrote this to be Cinderella dreaming of love. See how it already differs from the source material, just by virtue of being a translation? However, since I'm discussing the 1937 film, that's the subject I have to interpret. In that movie, Snow White being more beautiful than the queen or being more "fair" (ie pale) doesn't make any sense. For one thing, the Queen's skintone is literally the same as Snow White's, and Walt opted not to make Snow White as pale as possible because he felt it wouldn't look natural on the cels. So we can already count the "Snow White is the whitest, therefore the most beautiful" out since she and the Queen have the same complexion. Especially since "fair" is traditionally used to describe blonde people, and Snow White's hair is specified as the darkest shade of black (I elaborate on this in the original post we're discussing). Also, while working on the film, the animators repeatedly begged Walt to allow them to make Snow White more beautiful and particularly more "sexy", claiming she hadn't been attractive to draw but Walt refused. He didn't care whether or not Snow White looked the most beautiful, he wanted her character to shine- particularly her innocence and goodwill and kind heart- through her design as opposed to being hypersexualized. This is another reason I don't believe the 1937 film only valued her looks. And honestly, Snow White's looks only really matter to the Queen. The Prince falls in love with her voice because he hears her singing in the well, the Huntsman spares her life because he sees how kind she is with the baby bird, and the dwarfs almost kick her out when she first comes to the cottage because, even though she's a Princess, they don't want to be in target of the Queen's wrath. This is completely different than a character like Belle, who's sung about being valued by her beauty by everyone in her town, is repeatedly proposed to by the most eligible bachelor in town because of that beauty, is literally named "Beauty" and gets the royal treatment in the castle compared to her father when she arrives due to her beauty. Where the Beast saves Belle from almost being killed in the forest, Snow White has to pick herself up and find the cottage and then convince the dwarfs to let her stay. That's very different than "Snow White is the most beautiful and that's the most important part of the story."
There's something else I think you're overlooking: the Queen, the villain of the story, is the only one that cares about Snow White's beauty. The Magic Mirror literally says that, while the Queen tries to hide Snow White's beauty by forcing her to do menial work and dressing her in tatters, "rags cannot hide her gentle grace".
Tumblr media
As you can see, none of the definitions of grace have anything to do with beauty. The Queen is the one who interprets this, thinks the Mirror is speaking of Snow White's beauty- because she, the villain who we're not supposed to root for or see as a moral compass much less someone who teaches us the story's values, is exceedingly vain and values looks above all else. This compulsion and obsession with physical appearance ironically destroys her own beauty (conventionally speaking) when she transforms herself into the hag. So the only person who cares about beauty is the Queen, not the Mirror, and as I've mentioned the Queen is the villain of the story and someone we, the audience, are actively supposed to refute. This is like when bad faith criticisms of The Little Mermaid claim it's antifeminist because Ursula sings "a girl who holds her tongue gets her man" when she as the VILLAIN is supposed to be displaying the messages we shouldn't be taking from the film and Eric struggles to accept Ariel because she doesn't have a voice and only fully falls in love when her when she regains it!
So, now we've established the fact that the only person who really cares about looks is the film's villain. But, I also want to challenge you stating the story revolves around looks. I actively disagree with this and think Disney's 1937 adaption of Snow White offers so much more. We see the value of a chosen family, like Snow White has with the dwarfs. We see about kindness and resilience and optimism, of hope and of love and of the power of dreaming. Snow White is a character who's been orphaned, abused, and forced into a life of menial labor and forced servitude. She's been threatened, almost murdered, and left to be homeless and dead in a forest. But she never lets this abuse or her misfortunes permeate to her thinking. She's so kind and gentle and compassionate to everyone and always offers her value to any situations she comes into. If the story was about looks, the dwarfs would've thrown her out. Her beauty wasn't enough to save her. It was when she suggested she could cook for them and clean, since these were skills they didn't have in their environment and she had mastered from her years as a servant, that they let her stay. We, as the audience, understand her philosophy to life through the songs she sings. In I'm Wishing, she sings of wanting love and dreaming of the nice things someone will say to her, after years of being abused, and it perfectly sets up the loving romance she had with her Prince. With a Song and a Smile shows us her shining optimism, this same optimism that allows her to continue going through life with cheer and never letting any hardship deter her. Whistle While You Work- pivotal to Americans working through the Great Depression at the time- showed us how, even though she doesn't find work to be enjoyable, singing always puts her in a better mood and using her imagination helps her make the best of any circumstance. None of these songs are about her beauty. Even the Prince's song and its subsequent reprise to her "One Song" is about his love for her. And, as I mentioned, Whistle While You Work, especially, was a rhythm meant to help Americans that were working themselves to death and standing in food lines and not having any money and facing incredible poverty in the 1930s- because that's when that movie came out, not 1812.
You mentioned you were a historian and you also mentioned how my take has more "girl power" than the original and is, thus, inaccurate. You would then be familiar with the fact that Disney's Snow White was released after the flapper era which was one of the most radical periods of the feminist movement. That event and period and movement is of insurmountable importance when analyzing a film and its messages that came out a decade after said movement. Therefore, you can't compare the politics and the values to a story that came out in 1812, over a hundred years prior in a different country, to its 1937 companion. Finally, as a historian, you must be aware of the fact that the Snow White tale far predates the Brothers Grimm and that they themselves didn't come up with it. They went throughout different villages and recorded the different versions of all the different stories (mostly from older women) and presented a volume of tales where they published the versions of the stories they liked best in the ways they preferred. Their version should be, by no means, the "be all, end all" of interpreting this story when there are thousands of variations that predate it and when the brothers themselves were far from the originators. Also, I just wanted to remind you one last time that I was clearly discussing the 1937 property as you can see in other gifs from that same set, namely this one where I clearly state it:
Tumblr media
Lastly, fairytales are for everyone and if someone takes an empowering message away from it as opposed to a dated one like "beauty is all that matters", I don't think that's the worst thing in the world? People have different interpretations for different reasons and while I do enjoy the 1812 one, this is why the 1937 Snow White will forever be my favorite amongst all the remakes and different iterations of the character and story. I find many people misinterpret it and slam it as problematic or antifeminist, something that's inherently negative and wrong, and I actively defy that. That being said, I am glad you chose this gif out of all of the others to discuss because while the set itself was more parody, the gif you selected was one of the ones out of that set that I really stand behind and believe in.
What are some of Nabooru's fondest memories growing up in the Gerudo desert, and have they shaped the woman she is today? If so, how?
Tumblr media
[A lot of her fondest memories revolve around her combat training and her accomplishments attaches to that. She's incredibly proud of her achievements as a warrior, especially as the youngest in a very long time to be fully initiated into Gerudo society. But, if you've paid attention, that's probably a given, so here's a couple more.
While it was sometimes difficult to really squeeze in real "play" time into their schedules, Nabooru has fond memories of playing all sorts of games with the other girls in her youth. They would play out pretend raids or play hide and seek around the fortress (much to the adults' chagrin). They made up games that probably more closely resembled sports and made up all manner of contests to test each other in all manner of activities and skills. When she got older, the "games" were more often closer to games of "Truth or Dare" (or, more often than not, just a sort of dare each other to do stupid and possibly dangerous stunts). These sorts of games definitely shaped the daredevil in Nabooru and, for better or worse, made her just a little too fearless, ready to take on risks that maybe she shouldn't.
Additionally, her fondest memories come from the desert itself, especially in exploring it. She's always felt a deep love and adoration for their home--perpetual sandstorms, dangerous weather, and all--and she got (and still gets) immense satisfaction from exploring it. From learning the lay of the land, finding new landmarks and points of interests, to expanding her knowledge of their home not just for purposes of expanding and finding ways for their people to survive, she finds great joy among the dunes and mysteries they hold. Her favorite memory in regards to these explorations is finding her favorite oasis beyond the reach of the sandstorms where the gorgeous red flowers bloomed around a pond of pure, crystalline water. Occasionally, red fairies will congregate there as well. While more accessible now, back when she first discovered it, when Twinrova's sandstorms blocked most exploration of the desert, it was a place she considered hers. A private, beautiful place she could escape to when she needed some space or just wanted to relax in nature with a history book. It shaped her sense of adventure overall.]
Pokemon Journeys Episode 115
All right so it's time to take on this very controversial anipoke episode. Lowkey, I find it kind of funny that two of the most controversial episodes in the history of the anime have involved Alain. Poor guy I'm going to start with my favorite things about the episode. I really loved that we finally get to see Ash noted as the Alolan champion in the World Coronation Series. Finally, they gave him (some) props. As someone who started all the way back in OS saga, I've seen him win the Orange Island championship and conquer the battle frontier and I do hope at some point they do mention those feats too because those are also important to his legacy and Ash at this points deserves to be seen as the awesome trainer that he truly is. I also really loved the interactions between the masters 8. Especially Iris- she honestly really made the episode for me. I loved how her and Ash were running to the waiting area and bounding in like the excited children they are only to get a little nervous seeing the serious atmosphere from the other competitors. Also Iris thanking everyone when she was introduced in the opening ceremony and her reaction realizing she'd be going up against Cynthia was adorable. And of course I can't forget about her adorable selfie that she took with Cynthia and Diantha. It really showed that despite her being a powerful trainer, she's still young and new to the role as champion. Talking about my love for the interactions this episode actually leads to my first major criticism of the episode in that I definitely think that this episode should've been split into two. There was a lot going in this episode, a lot of which could have been better served if they were given more time. I personally definitely could watch an entire episode just focused on the masters 8 interacting. I think would be really cool. And now for the most controversial part of the episode the Leon vs Alain battle. Honestly I didn't really have a problem with the battle. In regards to the previous paragraph, I do think the battle could've definitely benefitted from having an entire episode to itself but I'm not upset with Leon cloberring Alain like he did. Admitetdly, I don't really have strong feelings towards Alain (or XY/XYZ anime) although I did enjoy the change of pace in the anime-verse due to his mega evolution special, so I understand that for fans of his they feel differently and see the battle as not that great for him. To me though, the fact that he got a clean win on Leon's Rillaboom is a huge feat as he's now the first trainer we've seen in the anime-verse get a KO on any of Leon's Pokemon. I'm specifying animeverse since we know from Raihan's league card he's the only person prior to the player in gameverse to KO a large number of Leon's Pokemon. Yes we can assume that in offscreen Land Raihan in the anime has KO'ed some of Leon's team, but that doesn't negate the fact this is our first on-screen KO in a trainer battle of any of Leon's team. I also really liked that Leon's Charizard didn't have to use Gigantamax to beat Alain's Mega Charizard X. Don't get me wrong, a G-max Charizard vs Mega Charizard would've looked awesome. But I think it's been important to the writers to show Leon doesn't have to rely on G-Max Charizard to secure a win (and we've seen that not only with this fight, but with Leon vs Flint in a prior episode). I will say I would've preferred Ash and Alain to rematch over Alain and Leon just because of the history. That being said, the Alain vs Leon and Ash vs Steven aren't the first time we've seen unpredictable matchups in anime tournaments. Think Gary and Ash not even battling at all in the indigo league contrary to their game and manga counterparts. Or even Trip and Ash being the first battle of the Unova league. The anime has been known to do wild matchups which I don't think is inherently bad because it reflects the true random nature of tournaments instead of how some anime/manga tend to make very convenient matchups. If anything I'm just far more salty they decided to bring back Alain instead of keeping Raihan in the Masters 8. We honestly didn't need two representatives from Kalos when Galar is the newest region. The Galar shafting has been a particularly thing I've loathed in journeys which brings me to my next point. Hop. Poor Hop. Okay admittedly I ugly-laughed when his Wooloo got knocked out in 10 seconds flat to Ash's Pikachu. That was hilarious. Of course I'm just over the moon to finally see Hop in the anime. Also I really loved the dynamic Goh, Hop and Ash had in the stands watching the Alain vs Leon battle. But even with all of that, Hop's inclusion in the episode just ends up being a painful reminder for me of what could've been. We could've had a more Galar-centric series where Hop could've been a rival to Ash. I think Ash and Hop could've had a great dynamic and Hop's already great character arc could've been enhanced in the anime. So seeing him being reduced to essentially a combination of the Furfrou guy from Kalos and Max when Ash faced Norman is disheartening to say the least. I feel like for me the sour taste this episode left in my mouth was really just a buildup of multiple snubs to Galar.
ꕥ — WELCOME TO MARE COSMIA, SHADOWHEART. 🌗
Tumblr media
ꕥ  — OOC INFORMATION;
name / alias: Jan age: 26 pronouns: He/Him ooc contact: @bloomood on tumblr other characters in xc: Jesse Faden
ꕥ  — IC INFORMATION;
name: Shadowheart age: 40 (physically early 20s, half-elves...) pronouns: She/Her series: Baldur’s Gate 3 canon point: End of Act 1 - Post Creche & Underdark app triggers: Amnesia, Child Abuse, Eye Trauma, Religious Cult
personality: Pious in her utter devotion to Shar, Shadowheart is a strong-willed believer in her matron’s teachings and belief. That devotion has the potential to show itself in all things in life which she finds herself caring for, though those other things are few and far between when her duties as a Sharran Disciple reign supreme.
Past her devotion she boasts a brutally honest way of speaking. She freely voices her opinions of others, for better or worse. If you remind her of an ogre she’ll tell you so to your face.
In more personal matters, Shadowheart keeps her cards very close to her chest. She’s vague, private, and secretive in the way she carries herself. Partially due to her amnesia, and the rest simply is in her nature. Conversations regarding Shar especially are hard to pry out of her as well, as Sharran worship is looked on as evil or suspicious by many of the populace.
something your muse struggles with: Shadowheart struggles with many things that fall under a similar theme. She’s not quick to trust. Shadowheart was raised believing that most everyone except her fellow Sharran devotees have their own agendas, their own motives that could very well make them her enemies. She’s wary almost to a fault. This leads her to be stubborn, though she believes her faith and tenets are unshakable, they do waver at times, and it’s easy for her to fall back on those teachings than face the source of that instability.
To trust, open one’s mind, let people in, all things that Shadowheart struggles with.
your muse’s greatest strength: Her strength lies in her intensity. Whether it be to her faith or to those she deems worthy of her respect, Shadowheart is always at her strongest when she believes in herself and believes in the cause that she’s fighting for. She’s both a strong arm to strike forward in the name of her devotion, or both a shield and a spell to heal her allies when they would fall.
history / background: Shadowheart’s history isn’t important in the name of Shar. Shar, the Nightsinger, the Goddess of Darkness and Loss, Shadowheart willingly surrendered her memories to her in a show of faith. Nothing was more valuable than utter devotion, and Shadowheart only strived to be the most devoted to her matron.
It was this devotion that had her selected to be part of a Sharran assault on a Githyanki camp. Their task was to retrieve an artefact, a multi-faced object with runes inscribed on its sides. Shadowheart was the only survivor of this task, and her luck would only last to spare her life. As shortly after, she was snatched by a Mindflayer’s ship and infected with a parasite.
As the ship was besieged by denizens of hell, Shadowheart and other abducted peoples crash landed. From there, she still sought to carry out her purpose. Deliver the artefact to her coven at Baldur’s Gate, only now struggling with the complication of a ticking time-bomb in the form of a mindflayer’s parasite burrowing into her brain from behind her eye. Though, mysteriously, she learns along with her companions that this parasite isn’t like the others, unnaturally so, she has yet to turn or show symptoms.
The muddied pond that is her memories is both a mixture of amnesia, and her own surrendering to Shar. She remembers very little, a favorite flower, a dark winter night, a fear of wolves, and being spared from the cold and the wolf’s vicious bite by disciples of Shar. Her task was the most important thing in her life now. To accomplish her lady’s task, to finally earn her favor and ascend in her eyes, that was all that mattered. Once she proved herself she would be fulfilled, and she would regain all those memories that were lost.
She traveled alongside fellow infected survivors of the Nautiloud crash. They dealt with goblins, hags, journeyed into the Underdark and forged a path through a Githyanki Creche. At times, Shadowheart wondered why she fought in many of the battles they picked. Willingly, with fervor. She told herself it was all in the name of Shar, to get herself to Baldur’s Gate. Doubt was buried beneath the repeated mantra of conviction in her mind. An old scar on the back of her hand has been acting up as well. A phantom pain that strikes sharply. She pushed that aside as well.
All she had to do was go forward. Continue, never waver.
Shadowheart rested her head after a celebration in her camp. She’d rise the next day, and keep moving forward.
If only it was that easy.
Spears, maces, shields, and many other weapons were drilled into her mind. Callouses in her palms, bloodied knuckles and orders to rise and go again.
Sharran training — Disciples of Shar excel in stealth and subterfuge, finding comfort and strength beneath the veil of night. Shadowheart is no exception. She’s quick, light-footed, and nimble with her fingers with traps and locks.
Half-elf / Fey Ancestry — Her blood boasts the hint of magic that all elves carry within them. She can see in the darkness as though there was dim lighting. Magic that would charm, seduce, or persuade is difficult to use on her. Magic that would put her to sleep is completely negated. She also knows the Firebolt cantrip from her ancestry.
Mind-flayer Parasite — This parasite is a sort of link between herself and others who have been infected. It allows her to communicate in a way telepathically to others, or issue commands to those who have it whose will she can overpower.
Items / Weapons: Mysterious Artefact — A multi-sided object, similar to a twelve-sided dice in its construction but larger, would fill one’s palm when held. It boasts an incredibly powerful but mysterious aura of magic.
starting ability: Cantrips! starting item: Mysterious Artefact
extra:
I wrote and redid the powers and abilities section like 3 times trying to figure out the best and clearest way to have it all listed. I'm in hell.
I hope it's all clear and makes sense, I figured piling channel divinity spells with earning the spell slot levels back was fair.
This IS currently an Act 1 Canon Point, and when I feel like updating her canon point in the future I will redo the personality and history sections to be more accurate! It was written in the perspective of an Act 1 Shadowheart in mind.
God's most special princess is here.
Super Mario RPG A Retrospective and Review
Tumblr media
Just recently earlier this week right before Thanksgiving I managed to have the fortune of finally crossing a particular Mario game off my gaming bucket list. One that had sort of interested me over the years but I never quite got around to playing before. This game of course as you might have guessed is none other than Super Mario RPG more specifically the Switch remake that just released last week. I feel I can now more properly express my personal thoughts now that the credits have rolled but first however I think its important to take a moment to explore the history of Super Mario RPG, its context in the development of the Mario series and RPG genre in order to under why this remake in particular feels so special for some younger people out there.
Super Mario RPG might be one of the most important games in the Mario franchise for a number of reasons. It was not only Mario's first venture into the RPG genre but is also the game that the Mario and Luigi and Paper Mario series owe their existence to it was also the final installment in the Mario series for the SNES as well as the final North American SNES release from Square which is likely a large part of why it never was originally released in Europe especially with the N64 and a certain 3D Mario game on the horizon at the time. It also is unique among Mario games in that it was a collaboration between Nintendo and one of their biggest and closest third-party partners at the time Squaresoft. At the time Shigeru Miyamoto had desired to create an RPG game featuring Mario while Square wanted to create an RPG that could have broader appeal in the west. Development of Super Mario RPG would begin in early 1994 and the game would release two years later in Japan in March 1996 with a North American release following two months later in May. To fully understand why Super Mario RPG was such a big deal, it's important to remember at the time the RPG genre had not achieved the sort of mainstream reverence and popularity like it had enjoyed in Japan. Games like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy had never quite managed to achieve the same level of commercial success in the states that they enjoyed in Japan. The RPG has traditionally stood as one of the more high-level concept genres in gaming with much of the genres roots being traced from the traditional tabletop RPGs such as Dungeons and Dragons. The degree of time investment typically needed coupled with the larger amounts of information to keep track of and manage leads to a genre of video game that has not traditionally lent itself to well to newcomers and more casual gamers. Not helping was the massive localization headaches that RPGs often tended to pose back in the day especially due to the large amounts of text that needed to be translated into proper English which often resulted in many RPG titles never releasing in North America with many of the early Final Fantasy games being a well-known victim of this fact. Super Mario RPG is important in this regard as it essentially marked the first serious attempt at creating an accessible RPG that could be easily enjoyed by someone who had never really played RPGs before. Much of the accessibility of Super Mario RPG can be most easily seen in it's design compared to more traditional role-playing games which can be most easily seen in its combat system. While battles play out in the traditional turn-based fashion, Mario RPG stands apart by adding in a degree of nuance and player engagement not seen in RPGs at time better reflecting the more action-oriented nature of the Mario series. The primary hook of Mario RPG's battle system is timed hits or Action Commands whereby pressing the proper button right before your attack lands or by following a certain button prompt you can improve the damage output and effectiveness of an attack. This also works the other way around where by pressing the button with proper timing can reduce the damage of an enemy attack or if timed perfectly negate it entirely. In a forward thinking move for it's time, random encounters are completely nonexistent with enemies being completely visible in the overworld granting players more agency in picking and choosing their battles. Taking a page from Mario tradition in some locations a Super Star can be found allowing the player to defeat enemies instantly for free experience. Item and Equipment management has also been greatly streamlined with each character having three equip slots corresponding to armor, a weapon, and an accessory respectively. These design elements serve to create was at the time probably one of the most accessible RPGs ever made.
This high degree of accessibility also speaks to Mario's nature as a video game everyman and his uncanny ability to take almost any genre of game and transform into something that is far more approachable for a more casual audience. A fact that the Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi series would build and expand upon in the future. Super Mario RPG also marked another significant first for the Mario series in that it was essentially the first Mario title to make an earnest attempt to flesh out the Mario cast and provide a more expanded look at Mario's world. It is here where Square's influence is most apparent in how the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time actually felt like a proper lived in place rather than a semi disjointed collection of stages. The usual Mario characters and enemies are further complimented by an eclectic cast of memorable supporting characters. A village of mole people, a manchild amusement man named Booster who fails to grasp the concept of weddings, a town of reformed monsters are just among the handful of people Mario and co will meet on their quest to restore the Star Road. This emphasis on world building and development also extends to the core Mario cast themselves while leaning into the history of the franchise for added effect. Mario, the all-around straight man has become a straight up celebrity with his signature jump effectively acting as his trademark calling card, Bowser is portrayed as a self-proclaimed tough guy who masks his insecurities behind a display of bravado, Peach meanwhile starts off as damsel in distress but displays signs of headstrongness joining in the adventure with a much more active role as a core member of the team once rescued. These character moments might seem small, but they went a long way in making the characters themselves feel genuinely real and relatable. All of this is backed up by what was at the time probably one of the funniest RPG scripts ever written resulting in a story that seldom takes itself too seriously.
Part of what makes Mario RPGs story so endearing to many is how it messes with one's expectations and manages to flip the typical Mario story formula on its head. The game actually begins where most Mario games typically end with Mario invading Bowser's castle to "You guessed it." rescue the Princess from Bowser's clutches. Bowser goes down with little trouble but right as Mario is about to free Peach and go home things quickly go off script as a giant sword suddenly comes crashing down into Bowser's Castle scattering Mario, Peach all across the land. We soon learn that this is all the work of a group known as the Smithy Gang and to make matters worse that same giant sword has also shattered the Star Road which we learn plays a key part in facilitating the granting of wishes in Mario's world. Soon what starts off as a mission to find Peach soon turns into a quest to save the hopes and wishes of everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond. Its admittedly funny considering how the Switch remake of SMRPG released right on the heels of Disney's WIsh, a movie that also is about a person saving the hopes wishes of everyone else. In fact, Super Mario RPGs basic plot could almost pass as something you might see in a Disney film. Topping it all off one of the most unique characters to join you is Geno, a aptly named Star Warrior who inhabits a child's puppet/doll that will probably make you wonder why the Disney lawyers weren't immediately clawing at Square and Nintendo's door the moment Super Mario RPG originally released. The Smithy Gang prove to be a memorable group of antagonists in their own right being this group of aliens/monsters that are all based around weapons who are eager to crush the hopes of everyone else so they can rule the world with ease even managing to humble Bowser forcing him into a reluctant alliance with Mario. It was an is such a unique setup for a Mario game it manages to easily stand out with it's own identity while staying true to the spirit of Mario which is a large part of why Super Mario RPG is so beloved after all these years. There was and is no other Mario game quite like it and there probably never will be another.
In essence Super Mario RPG really embodies the tried-and-true business strategy of "If you want to sell a product attach a well-known character/icon to it." It certainly did the trick when Super Mario RPG originally released in 1996. The game would become the third highest selling game that year in Japan and the Sixth in the United States. By August it had managed to claim the title of most rented game in the United States for 14 weeks straight. Super Mario RPG certainly broke new ground in helping bring the RPG genre to the mainstream and it proved an excellent send off to the SNES era of Mario. There is also a sort of bittersweetness to Super Mario RPG looking back as it effectively marked the end of Nintendo and Square's partnership coming right before their falling out over a certain Final Fantasy title and it would be the last we would see of Square on Nintendo systems for a generation. The circumstances surrounding the games creation have also unfortunately resulted in Super Mario RPG being one of the more elusive Mario games in regard to being kept in circulation especially now with the Wii and Wii U eShops now shut down. For the longest time Super Mario RPG felt like that unfortunate stepchild caught in the midst of an ugly divorce which made it all the more surprising when it was announced in June earlier this year that Super Mario RPG would be getting a full-fledged remake and not simply just another re issue on Nintendo Switch Online. The fact that Super Mario RPG, one of the last Mario games anyone expected to get a full-fledged remake is now back in full HD for many Mario RPG fans has brought a new sense of hope with the Paper Mario series having largely drifted away from it's RPG roots and with the Mario and Luigi series effectively stuck in limbo following Alphadream's demise. It also speaks to how much the rift between Square Enix and Nintendo has managed to heal in the years following the debacle of the N64 and Final Fantasy 7.
As for what the remake of Super Mario RPG brings to the table it stays largely faithful to the original with everything playing out pretty much how you remembered it back in 1996. The biggest change you will no doubt notice first thing is the massive upgrade in presentation. It's shockingly impressive just how well ArtePiazza has managed to bring Super Mario RPG into full 3D while staying true to the visual identity of the original. There is a certain charm in seeing how faithfully the new character models adhere to the look of their original sprites. It's even more shocking all the original characters including Mallow, Geno, and even the Smithy gang have remained largely untouched like someone just took the original promotional renders and gave them a good run through the HD washing machine. The fact that Switch version of Mario RPG manages to retain the visual identity of the original feels like a breath of fresh air in an era where Mario has felt increasingly homogenized in the interest of brand unity a trait that sadly plagued the recent Mario and Luigi 3DS remakes. As is often the case with remakes there are a good number of quality of life improvements on offer. Combat has been tweaked in all the right ways with better visual cues helping players to learn the timing for attacks and blocking as well as indicating what attacks are unblockable. You are now further rewarded for pulling off attacks perfectly by inflicting splash damage to all enemies. The biggest new addition however is that of a gauge that fills from successfully executing action commands and blocking attacks. When the gauge reaches 100%, you are now able to pull off a Triple Move, a highly cinematic super attack that varies depending on your party combination but generally does massive damage while bestowing players with some beneficial side effects. It seems minor but it manages to add enough to the combat system to help keep it feeling fresh while encouraging you to experiment with your party which now can thankfully switched out mid battle although just like the original Mario must be present at all times. which does limit your party options a bit. Other new features include a proper enemy bestiary as well as a scrapbook that helps keep track of key story events. Inventory management has also been dramatically improved with items now able to be stacked. The remake also introduces some added post game content in the form of rematches with certain bosses, extremely challenging fights that make some of the hardest bosses from the original game look like a cakewalk by comparison and expect you to have mastered the battle mechanics to even have a chance of victory. These post game fights help add a good deal of play value onto what is considered a relatively short game for RPG standards.
And of course, we can't discuss Super Mario RPG without mentioning the soundtrack. The new compositions do a wonderful job of breathing new life into Yoko Shimomura's works. The 16 bit audio samples of the SNES have given way to full-fledged orchestral instrumentations that often serves to grant many of the remastered songs a clear Disney flair. which serves to fit the adventure like a glove. Although if you have that soft spot for the originals, the option is there to switch to the original SNES soundtrack if you so please.
All in all Super Mario RPG for Switch is probably one of the best remakes of a Mario game seen in ages and might be one of the best remakes of all time period taking a well loved classic and giving a good modern facelift for a new generation of fans. Any Mario fan worth their salt owes it to themselves to play this game and perhaps Mario RPG making a comeback can be taken as a sign that things may be finally looking up for Mario RPGs especially with a Switch remake of a certain other Mario RPG title on the horizon next year.
It is a subject little entertained, but the law can be abused to promote crime, and in many instances throughout history, it has been used for exactly such purposes.
In ancient Babylon, it was the law that you had to have sex with a temple prostitute and pay your temple tax in order to be forgiven your sins, including late payments to the government.  You also had to sacrifice your first born by burning the baby alive in honor of Molloch (to avoid and control the results of their other laws requiring people to have sex, sex, and more sex of all kinds and for every occasion.)
We tend not to think about the abuse of law, but we should do so, because our entire world suffers from this malady.
Throughout our investigations we have found England and Scotland at the bottom of the abuse of law in every place and venue we have studied; though it is often made to appear that "America" is the source of the malaise, it can be quickly determined that the actual problem source remains the malfeasance and misadministration of the Municipal Corporations in the District of Columbia --- organizations that many Americans work for, but which are foreign in nature and alliance.
A deeper investigation reveals a universal pattern of England and Scotland working together to promote criminal activity, especially financial crimes, for the past two centuries, which roughly coincides with the Royal Family intermarriage with Scottish financiers, the law reforms of the Scottish Lord Mansfield, and the gigantic impersonation scheme launched by a Scottish commercial corporation merely calling itself "The United States of America" -- Incorporated.
It was Scotland that chartered, hosted, and foisted off "The United States of America"--- Incorporated, and its undisclosed "Corporate Constitution" in 1868, actions which allowed this Interloper to gain access to our credit via identity theft and impersonation of the lawful government, which was, of course, allowed by the colluding international banks.
It was Scottish financiers who figured out how to legalize securitization in general  and particularly, securitization of living flesh via the process of impersonation and enfranchisement; they are the ones who found means to legalize any number of crimes from enforcement of private legal tender laws on the General Public, to hypothecation of debt on land, to substitution of private police forces for public peacekeeping forces, and so-called British "equity law" for American Common Law.
Far more than their English counterparts, Scottish barristers have been the main purveyors of confusions-at-law, split jurisdictions, and commingling of the Law of the Land with the Law of the Sea.  This has opened up opportunities for activities that have variously been described as "latching upon" and "seizing upon" property, especially when using claims of abandonment when in fact no such abandonment exists.
We have discovered many instances where claims on abandonment have been used by commercial banks to seize upon undisclosed escrow accounts owed to Americans who have had their birthright estates unlawfully converted and waived and otherwise manipulated so as to promote exactly this kind of fraud.
This particular form of fraud occurs most often in the home mortgage arena where a mortgage owed by a former government entity gets sloughed off onto the unwitting current applicant, whose own credit and interest in the home is purloined to generate all the funds for the transaction, but who is then regarded as an "absentee landlord".
The victims are not told the truth about the true nature of the mortgage as a prior debt owed on property held in a trust, nor is the nature of the transaction itself ever fully disclosed, nor is the end result of all this ever revealed --- that is, that even after paying off approximately five times the total amount of the mortgage over the course of thirty years, the victim of this vicious scheme will still only be a tenant owed a "future lease-purchase agreement".
The property held in trust cannot be sold until all debts and encumbrances are paid off and the trust is liquidated.  That accrual of government debt is the mortgage that the Buyer is paying off, but even when that is free and clear, there is no instruction given for reconveying the property out of the foreign trust, so it remains held in trust and the buyer/homeowner remains a tenant of the trust, and all the victim gets for thirty years of hard work and maintenance is a "future" lease-purchase agreement at an undetermined time when new costs and encumbrances will accrue and apply.
That is, the victims pay off a mortgage for the British Monarch, who then promises another future arrangement --  a lease, with more payments attached. So the victim thinks that he owns the house he paid for five times over, but in fact, unless he reconveys it to the land and soil jurisdiction upon paying off the mortgage and secures his patent, more charges accrue against a future lease-purchase of the property from the trust and the whole process repeats.
The Buyer is in fact a Tenant, and once the mortgage is paid off, a future Leaseholder.  The Presumptive Lease continues to accrue charges from the "government" overseers and is not transferable, so when new people buy the same property, the process starts over from the beginning with a mortgage to pay off first, and then a presumptive lease, etc.
This is never disclosed to the Buyer, so this is a real estate racket benefiting the British Monarch and various crony organizations that provide titles and title insurance, bar association members who provide legal services, and of course, banks.
The victim of this scheme is also never told about the escrow account that will be set up in his name to receive back the funds recouped from his surplus credit.  His failure to collect the escrow account -- one that he has never been told about -- is interpreted as a gift to the bank, which claims the escrow funds as abandoned property.
The absentee landlords in this country and other countries around the world that have been similarly defrauded, number in the hundreds of millions, simply because they aren't aware that, thanks to registrations undertaken when they were babies, they were trafficked into foreign territorial  jurisdictions and have to take action to lawfully convert back to their birthright status before they are actually eligible to own land.
Until then, the greedy British Monarch will be more than happy to act as their Public Trustee and keep all the land in his or her custody, keep the racket running, and show all the would-be landlords in America as "absentees".
This secretive and unlawful conversion of their natural political status makes the American victims Subjects of the British Monarch, and also subjects them to foreign forms of law, deprives them of their property rights, and their constitutional guarantees --- reduces them to paying off mortgages owed by the government custodians, and living as tenants on their own land --- and this is all done by abuse of law and without a paying a penny to them for their merely presumed "voluntary" contribution of their assets to the British Territorial Public Trust.
All this purposeful self-interested legal chicanery and fraud results in unjust enrichment for the Perpetrators and crime against newborn babies  and is all foisted off as a law, or rather, an abuse of law, requiring the registration of newborns as property belonging to the British Territorial State-of-State franchises that have been substituting for our own State-of-State organizations ever since the Civil War.
The theme of sacrificing babies to Molloch is a primary part of the old Babylonian religion, and these practices and the underlying disrespect for life is condemned throughout The Bible. We do not have to look far to deduce that this ancient religion has once again reared its head.
After seeing the weird processional ceremony at the London Olympics, which featured robed and hooded figures walking around the effigy of a dead baby in a coffin, and taking this white-collar genocide-on-paper of American babies for what it is worth, we conclude that this ancient evil has once again gained a foothold.
Continued attempts to murder babies both in fact, via abortion, and on paper, has predictably resulted in disrespect for life, destruction of the family, the denigration of men and their role in the family, and an unnatural and often perverse fascination with sex of all kinds which we see reflected in various political movements.
None of this would be possible without the abuse of law and in this case, impersonation of living flesh as non-living corporate persons.  None of it would be possible without purposeful substitution of private law for Public Law.  None of it would be possible without crooked lawyers, bar attorneys, and judges profiting themselves from the abuse of the law.
We wish for the personage and barratry crimes to be prosecuted.
We wish for all registrations and similar public interest claims seeking to latch onto babies and their Good Names to be overturned pending hard proof that these babies are in fact wards of the state and not being supported by and cared for by their parents, and also hard evidence and proof that these babies, now adults, have waived their birthright estates under conditions of full disclosure.
We wish for an end to the abuse of law to promote unjust enrichment of courts, court officials, and governments.
We wish for an easy and effective means to report and prosecute these crimes against us, against our property interests and against humanity.
We wish for an effective means to require full disclosure of all contracts in all jurisdictions.
We wish for systemic cure of these fraud schemes such that people no longer have to search for decades to find the remedies required by law and deal with personage in the courts and self-interest in the government services industry.
We wish for an end to the human trafficking, identity theft, asset theft, and coercion promoted by these Municipal Corporations functioning as government service providers.
You can drain the water but the swamp remains.
The Great Dismal Swamp on the eastern coast of the US used to occupy a range of what is now estimated to be over 1,000,000 acres. With the completion of the Great Dismal Swamo canal in 1805 the swamp was drained to approximately a third or less of its original size, leaving behind swathes of sandy soil later appropriated for farmland and industrial logging. Driving through Southeastern Virginia even at a distance from the swamp’s proper boundaries will reveal a landscape accustomed to standing water: nigh any divot in the landscape will be occupied by a pool or a puddle of some kind. Even the persistently logged tree stands demarcating fields of cotton, peanuts, or soy beans will under closer inspection reveal a gradual shift from eastern white pines and scrubby briars to cypresses with their knees perched at the surface of black water.
Further north, occupied the greatest and most terrifying city on the East Coast, the island of Manhattan was once home to an abundance of ponds, marshes, and natural springs. Collect Pond, perhaps the largest and deepest of the island’s original bodies of water, once occupied 40 acres and was fed by a natural spring. The original area of the pond is now only memorialized by a park the size of a half-block bordering the city’s civic center. An ephemeral pond is the hallmark of the park, but more often than not its bed hosts flocks of roving pigeons instead of the water its namesake suggests.
It is well known, however, that buildings in the area are especially prone to flooded basements. Most infamously of these are The Tombs, a penitentiary across the street from Collect Pond Park. Built, demolished, and rebuilt no less than four individual times, each new iteration of the tombs seems condemned to sinking foundations and foul conditions. Deep underneath these city blocks, is it really such a stretch of the imagination to consider that original spring still might yet flow?
Consider further the history of Canal St, which true to its name once was the site of a canal that itself was dug as part of the effort to drain Collect Pond. In the summers a smell hangs over the area that can only be described as miasmic, unexplainable for its unique intensity despite the hot garbage, cheap restaurants, and sewer grates that also occupy every other part of the city. Even I, four stories high in a walkup a few blocks north of Canal, can’t escape the mosquitoes that cloud the area from July to September. Despite the overwhelmingly cynical attitude of every old new yorker towards the mechanical encroachment of gentrification into the area, the neighborhood can’t shake the ghostly presence of water that sat here almost two centuries ago.
Back in rural Virginia, where the air is cleaner and the planets shine at night, every small parking lot has a holding pond to the side and every grandmother complains about the pools of water out back. While surveying the land in 1728, William Byrd II described the swamp as “a miserable morass where nothing can inhabit.” The statement rings true today if only in the landscape brought about after centuries of industrial agriculture. I’ve chosen not to look up the current figures, but I remember back in 2019 an article about global insect density being a third of what it had been only decades before, and a second article months later detailing a similar situation in regards to the world’s population of birds.
There’s no real wrap up for this essay, no good moral that I could spin. I’m just depressed and thinking about lost waters. Still, I guess what I can end with is that ghosts are always with us, and whether or not we can see the death that sprung them into existence, their absence will be felt.
On the 16th of November, I visited the Manchester Animation Festival. I previously attended the festival in 2019, and it was great to go again.
The films I watched included:
Little Things stood out to me since I no longer eat meat for the same reasons highlighted in this animated film; factory farming not only destroys land but is also cruel to animals such as cows, chickens, and pigs. I believe that by employing a somewhat 'cute' visual style and transitioning to incredibly mortifying scenes of the cattle being force fed grain and herded into packed areas, this film did an excellent job of demonstrating how atrocious these practises are.
The antagonist is depicted as a large looming shadow that rakes through the forest with its fingers, this symbolises humankind's destruction of nature. Through the use of its angular and dark shapes it conveys an ominous sense of threat whilst emphasising the idea of humanity as something separate from nature itself. As the protagonist travels down through the woods, she is forced to abandon her friends as they feed on the grains planted by the humans. This demonstrates how the human-animal relationship has been exploited to benefit society without regard for what happens to those who are affected by these practices. When the protagonist finally reaches the edge of the forest, she finds herself standing on a cliffside, overlooking a bloody river and destroyed trees. This scene highlights how mankind continues to exploit the natural world despite knowing the devastating effects it will inevitably cause. By juxtaposing images of forests full of life against one of them being cut down to make way for new farmland, the viewer is reminded of the consequences of their own actions.
Despite being upsetting to watch, I believe it is an excellent approach to educate people who consume meat on why it is so vital to check where it is produced. Purchasing from large corporations that do not care about the environment or the welfare of animals is detrimental and contributes to the deterioration of the planet.
The second film that stood out to me was
As someone who loves dogs and has disabilities, this film was a breath of fresh air. I admire how the golden retriever develops from his bicycle accident to finally overcoming his fear when he becomes a guide dog. The screenwriters' understanding and passion for this is apparent, and the CGI animation is extremely expressive. This is my favourite film that I saw.
This film's lighting is vibrant, especially during scenes featuring the golden retriever playing with his mother or the scene where he is training alongside the other dogs; these colours help create a sense of wonderment as well as add depth to each shot. For example, there are many shots showing the sun shining on their fur, which gives off a warm feeling while also giving us insight into the character's personality: Andy is a playful and caring character. Furthermore, the background music adds another layer to the emotional experience by helping convey certain emotions through subtle changes in tempo. These aspects contribute towards creating a more heartfelt environment, allowing audiences to sympathise with Andy's situation.
The third film that stood out to me is
This film, like Little Things, emphasises the importance of land preservation and research. Nobody would be able to hear the recordings of the last known Kauai O'o A'a bird if it weren't for John Sincock. Although the true story on which it is based is heartbreaking as the Kauai O'o A'a bird is now extinct, I feel animation and cinema are vital in educating people about history. I had never heard of this bird before watching it, so I learned something new, and it also made me want to research more about the species.
The final film I wish to speak about is
When I first saw this, I thought it was an awareness campaign for something, but there was no information at the end. Despite it being impressive from an artistic standpoint, I did not enjoy this one. This film was memorable because of how uncomfortable it made me and I wonder if that was the director's intention.
There were a large collection of films that were all amazing in their own right, but all of these films stood out to me the most. They also helped me to understand on how long it would take me to produce my animated film as I will be most likely making quite a lot of models.
I Won’t Say I’m in Love : Thranduil X Female! Reader
Tumblr media
Prompts: “Hi can I request a Thranduil x elf! reader imagine where he likes her but is too prideful to admit it so the reader & Legolas put on a show to make him jealous?” & “Can you write a Thranduil x fem elf! reader imagine, based on the song I won’t say (i’m in love) from the movie Hercules please??”
Submitted by: @elia-the-bibliophile
Words: 2.5K
A/N: Sorry I’ve been so behind on my writings, so much has been going on and its really been stifling my writing process. But I hope you guys enjoy this, I lost the original draft and completely rewrote it from scratch. Also, this has now become one of my longest ficlets! Also its not edited yet but I will go through soon and fix any errors!  Also will add to masterlist soon!
----------------
The first time the elf king laid his eyes on you, you had been a force to be reckoned with. Your hands were gripping dual swords, and you had made your way across the battlefield with grace, slicing down any orc that had found itself unlucky enough to be in your path.
He had taken a sharp breath and tried to remember that he was standing in a battlefield, but watching you move he felt a tug at his heartstrings. He could not even bare to tear his eyes away from you as he swung his own blade at an orc that had gotten to close for comfort. The foul things head had come off and landed at his feet, and yet he watched as you jumped up and planted your feet into another elf’s back, sending him flying out of the way of an arrow that surely would have ended his life. You had used the momentum to flip around and land back on your feet just in time to deflect another arrow with one blade, while using the other one to slash at the orc nearest you.
Thranduil’s face remained impassive, after all he was a king and he had some image to uphold, but he was finally able to draw his eyes away from you. He knew he had seen your face in his kingdom before, but now you were on his radar. He moved through the battle with new vigor, intent on being able to look upon your face once every filthy orc on the field had had its life snuffed out.
----
“Legolas, you really should not make bets that you know you cannot win” you stated, as another guard tossed a bag of coin into your waiting hand. You smiled as you waggled the coin bag in front of your friend’s face, and all he could manage in response was an incoherent mumble.
You had just drunk Legolas under the table, which was usually how these sorts of bets with him panned out. You couldn’t help but to laugh at him before you lifted him up, supporting him with your shoulder and following the familiar route to his room. As you passed into the royal suite of rooms, you noticed Legolas had fallen asleep while slung across your shoulder. You sighed before you opened the door to his room and threw him, rather ungracefully, onto his bed.  You shook your head, a smile still gracing your lips, before dusting your hands off on your tunic and heading out the door.
As you closed the door and turned around you were met with the rather imposing figure of the king.
“There must be good reason for you to be sneaking out of my sons room at this time of night” Thranduil said, his gaze sharp as he looked down at you, but you could see the twinkle in his eyes. You were unsure what such a twinkle meant in comparison to the glare he sent down at you. You had always been unsure about the way he saw you.
“Aran nín (my king)” You started, as you dipped your head into a bow, “He decided that he could beat me in a drinking contest. I’m simply doing the right thing by escorting him to his bed when he could not even manage to hold his own weight up.” You replied as you tried to hide your smile from remembering your friend’s antics.
His face remained impassive, although you were sure you saw his lip twitch.
“Well to make up for my sons... disagreeable behavior, it would be my pleasure to escort you back to your room, híril nîn (my lady)” he said as he fell into place next to you, his hand resting on the small of your back as you both trekked to your room. You tried your best to stay calm, but you felt as if your heart was in your throat and you were sure Thranduil could hear it. His hand never moved from your back, and when you reached your door, he took your hand in his and placed a kiss on your palm before bidding you goodnight. You almost squealed with delight but instead you smiled and kept composure, waiting to lose it as you jumped into bed for the night.
You absolutely adored Thranduil. He was by far the handsomest elf you had ever laid your eyes upon, something you had thought even when you were a small elleth who ran around the kingdom. His eyes were an ocean, and you desired nothing more to swim in them everyday for the rest of your life. The way his hand had been on your back, the way his lips had lingered on your palm, all gave you hope that maybe he felt the same, but reality came crashing down every time you met his gaze. He did not smile, and his face was always hardened with a glare. Somedays you wondered if he felt anything at all, while on others you wished that we would gaze upon you as if you were is beloved, his treasure.
 ----
If there's a prize for rotten judgement,
I guess I've already won that
No woman is worth the aggravation,
That's ancient history, been there, done that!
As Thranduil left from your rooms, he had clenched his hand to his side. He should have said something, but what good would that have done. His pride always got the better of him and caused him to hold his tongue. He was the king! How could he bring himself to admit that he was feeling something for you?
The past had not been kind to him in regards to love. He spoke nothing of Elerrian anymore, and although he cared much for her, she had passed long ago, leaving him alone in a cold world. Looking at you, he felt the tug on his emotions he once had with her. To him, it was almost as if a string of fate had been wrapped around both your pinkies, and it was all he could do to ignore the pulling sensation he felt.
He dare not fall into the pits of love once more, as much as he wished he could. He recalls the day he saw you on the battlefield and had to keep himself in check. He cannot... no, he would not allow himself to admit that he felt something for you. He had learned throughout his long life that love was nothing but heartache and pain, and he refused to lose another who was dear to him.
 ----
She's the Earth and heaven to you,
Try to keep it hidden
Honey, we can see right through you
Boy, ya can't conceal it
We know how ya feel and
Who you're thinking of!
He watched as you sat and laughed with his son, his nails digging into the arm of his seat at the head of the table.
After Thranduil’s first encounter with you, he could not help but make it so you were always near him. He found out your name from Legolas, who apparently was your friend and confidant, which is the most likely reason he knew he had seen you before. After this, he assigned you as one of the main commanders of Mirkwood’s forces due to your battle prowess, however, this had allowed you to not only join his council, but also the privilege of being the only elleth on it.
However, this had also led to Legolas being able to spend more time with you. Thranduil refused to admit that he was jealous. He was the ruler of the kingdom, one such as he did not feel such things. But the more he saw you laugh with his son, the more he had to bite down on his tongue to keep from lashing out in an unsavory manner in front of you.
However, he could not stop his glare towards his son as he watched you fling your head back in laughter, your arm on Legolas’s shoulder as you tried to catch your breath. Legolas turned to look him in the eyes, clearly uncertain as to the nature of the glare he was receiving, although his face did light up as he seemed to put the pieces together.
Thranduil gritted his teeth together, his fingernails leaving crescent indents on his palms as he balled his fists, he was feeling as though he would be ground into dust as he watched Legolas lean over and whisper in your ear as you blushed and nodded. He felt as if he was a mortar, with the pestle grinding his very being into dust. Yet, he was still stone, still unwavering and would not yet yield. He refused to speak with you on the matter of his affections, it was unbecoming of a ruler. He would not stand here and declare his feelings for you, and he most likely never would.
He pushed his emotions down and loosened his fists as his knuckles had turn white, he willed his face to once again be completely impassive, even as he felt as if wanted to crush something with his hands as you and Legolas left together.
 ----
Legolas leaned towards you, his hand on your shoulder and a knowing smile on his lips. He turned and met his fathers fiery gaze once more before he spoke.
“Hey, Y/N, remember that crush you have on my ada (father)?” he asked you. Your eyes went wide, and you sputtered before trying to cover the growing blush on your face with your hands.
“Leg! Do you really need to bring that up here?” you whispered back at him through your hands.
“Of course! Any chance to embarrass you Mellon nîn (my friend)!” he laughed for a second, before his face turned deathly serious. “But back to the point, I think I have a plan of sorts, and I very much believe you’d wish you hear it”
 ----
No chance, no way
I won't say it, no, no
You swoon, you sigh
Why deny it, uh-oh
It's too cliche
I won't say I'm in love
The next evening, the pieces of Legolas’s plan had slid together almost seamlessly.
He sat with you at the front of the corridor, so that any who passed could plainly see what was happening between the two of you. This worked in his favor, especially since his ada usually passed the hall around this time in order to reach the royal suites. Plus, any servants who passed were certain to inform him about the goings on they had witnessed, which would most likely prompt him to rush to you both.
Legolas’s arm was slung over your shoulder and your legs were pulled into his lap, He gently rubbed small circles into your thigh with his fingernails.
Soon, he heard the familiar footsteps of his ada, and began to set the plan into motion.
His hand left your knee and he placed his finger under your chin, using it to keep your face level with his. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the dark gray of his ada’s robe as he began to turn into the corridor. Legolas winked at you and pulled you closer, his lips dancing over the shell of your ear. He couldn’t help but whisper softly to you, “I wish I could see the look on his face right now Y/N”, causing you to involuntarily shudder.
After turning the corner, Thranduil was practically seeing red, he could hear the blood rushing in his ears. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. His son, his only child, amorously flirting in his hallways, his kingdom. However., when he saw it was you in Legolas’s arms, he forgot how to breathe, and he couldn’t seem to think clearly. His brain had turned to acid in his skull. His face hardened as he stormed over to you both, grabbing you by the wrist harshly and yanking you away from Legolas and down the hall. After a few twists and turns, he had reached the end of a deserted hallway and pushed you up against the wall.
Before you could even gasp at the contact your body had made with the wall behind you, Thranduil’s lips were on yours. You stood still, his hand still grasping your wrist tight. He pulled away from you, and the look on his face seemed dejected, it was unbecoming of his beautiful features to be contorted into such a look of melancholia.
He released the pressure on your wrist and dropped it before turning away and trying to make off down the corridor.
You couldn’t stop yourself by grabbing him by the back of his robe and pushing him against the wall, just as he had done to you. “Where do you think you’re going...” you surged forward, as your lips brushed over his, “Thranduil..”
His eyes widened before you crashed your lips into his, full of fiery passion and spirit, the kind he had seen from you so often. His lips were warm, and he tasted of mint, this moment reminding you of days spent in the forest, nights spent under the stars. He sucked at your bottom lip as your hand wove its way into his hair. You couldn’t help yourself as you grazed your teeth over his lower lip, your hands roaming up to run through his hair and caress his face and neck, everything soft as silk. He let out a low groan before he grabbed you once again and switched positions, your back once again on the wall. He pulled away, resting his forehead against yours and breathing heavily.
“Fuck...” he muttered under his breath, before burying his head in your shoulder.
“Thranduil... Gi melin (I love you)” you whispered from swollen lips “Meleth nîn…(my love)” one of your hands rubbed circles into his low back, the other tucked strands of hair behind his ear.
“Do not forget Y/N,” he started, the shakiness in his voice surprising you “I would pluck every star from the sky and lay them at your feet. I offer you my sword, I offer you my life.” He raised his head from your shoulder before placing a kiss on your forehead.
“You are my ithildim (star-light)” he whispered as his thumb ran across your cheek. He offered you a small smile, the first genuine one you had ever seen from him, before he pulled his hand away and walked off down the corridor.
Your fingers ran over your lips, which still tingled, and when you licked at them you could still taste the mint on them. Your skin felt seared where his hands had run across it. As you watched him leave, you could not help but to let out a small laugh. His pride had forbidden him from directly saying he loved you the way you did him, but his actions, his words, they all proved to you the truth. Although he could not say his feelings, he had shown you them plainly enough.
You smacked your hands against your cheeks and shook your head before you made after him, you refused to let your little rendezvous be over so soon, especially after you and Legolas had went through all that effort to make it happen.
Part 3: Ring’s Biology and Possible Origins
In the world of Ring Fit Adventure, there exist monsters, ghosts, cyborgs, robots, gods, a curious array of animals, human beings of enormous size…and Ring. Ring—a creature so entirely unique, he fails to fit into any of those categories.
Everyone has their own idea as to what Ring is, and as to where he came from. So here’s mine.
Tumblr media
(Spoilers for the end of the main storyline. Various postgame dialogue spoilers beyond that.)
If we’re going to talk about where Ring might have come from, it makes sense to look for clues in what he’s presented as. Physically, and subtextually. So let’s take it from the top.
Stepping away from the confines of the game, Ring’s shape is based off a Pilates ring, a piece of exercise equipment who’s history dates back to nearly a century ago, as of the game’s release. It was invented to help rehabilitate wounded soldiers through physical therapy following World War I. Design-wise, though…Ring’s face draws heavy inspiration from depictions of Ancient Inca art. Specifically, he looks a lot like the figure atop this ceremonial tumi knife.
Tumblr media
The prominent nose. The familiar jawline. A headpiece bisecting the brow. The blue commonly set into the eyes of the art. The ears—heavy earrings were unisex among the Inca nobility, resulting in long, stretched lobes. But most importantly—the statue is gold. And in the ancient Inca Empire, gold was revered as being sweat from the very sun itself. Metal nowadays is often associated with machinery, with invention. But raw metal has always been a fruit of the earth, as natural as any wood or leaf. The Inca took it a step further. They thought of gold as mystical.
Likewise, Ring’s design is meant to invoke these traits. Despite being made of metal, Ring visibly lacks gears or wiring or nozzles or hatches. His mouth may have a hinge and his flaming little hair piece may spin around. But in terms of “build,” Ring (the magical metal donut) has more in common with Pinocchio (the magical wooden puppet), than with an actual machine.
Tumblr media
On a surface level, Ring really is best described as a “magical creature.” He’s obviously not made of flesh and blood. But he’s alive in a way that the closest comparison—sentient robots—just aren’t. Ring sweats, breathes, sleeps, eats. He ages. His metal face flexes and grows and shrinks as he speaks. Ring wields exercise energy, much in the same way that humans do, and more. He crafts, enhances, and stores things with it. Its raw essence flows through him like a fiery kind of lifeblood.
Ring’s not a human or a cyborg. He’s not a monster or a ghost or an animal. He’s made of metal like a robot, and that’s about it. And while Ring may (presumably) have the long life of a god, he lacks everything else. Right down to the proper shape and abilities. Ring, whatever the specifics, is a “magical creature” that exists in a class of his own. We never ever meet another being quite like him.
…At least. That’s what I used to think.
———
The thing with Ring is, it’s hard to tell whether he’s actively omitting facts or just forgetting them. He’s got a terrible memory. But he also as good as lies to us in the beginning, pretending as though Dragaux’s just some enemy to him.
So here is what I understand.
We meet Ring, and he and Dragaux are positioned as these perfect opposites, as perfect enemies. Ring builds others up, and Dragaux tears them down. Dragaux is flashy, an eyesore, the purple to Ring’s yellow, and yet he steals the stage every time. He’s a jerk, but he’s Ring’s jerk. We show up to every boss fight because we are invested in his story, his opinions, his downward spiral.
And that’s our first mistake, really. Because Dragaux’s accent color isn’t purple, it’s pink. Because Dragaux’s opposite isn’t Ring, it’s Trainee. And Ring’s real foil was never Dragaux, but Dark Influence itself.
———
Have you ever thought about how strange it is, this particular parasite. From a narrative standpoint, I mean. As much as it’s referred to as “Dragaux’s influence” or “Dragaux’s aura,” Dragaux is only its latest meal, not its source. And that meal has been lasting anywhere from decades to a century, at least. Dark Influence is, by nature, negativity incarnate. It could be as old as the hills. Older, maybe.
Dark Influence is voiceless, faceless. A parasite composed of pure negative exercise energy, it can theoretically exist on its own. But it thrives best when entrenched in the heart of a host. Its host—a physical creature that, once ensnared, starts exhibiting traits that belong to the Influence: like great swathes of flame in its signature color.
Does that not sound. Familiar.
Tumblr media
Because Ring and Dark Influence? Fulfill eerily similar roles, in regards to their syncing partners.
Both of them harness their partner’s exercise energy. Both of them augment the abilities of their partner. But unlike Ring, who’s always actively helping Trainee in precise and creative ways…Dark Influence doesn’t care. I’m not sure if it can give a care about anything that doesn’t include “amassing power” and “spreading itself.” (And I think those are just instincts. I’ve yet to see proof that this thing has anything approaching a complex personality.) But whether or not it cares about Dragaux, it’s fully anchored within his body. It shares its strength with him because there’s nowhere else to store it.
Because unlike Ring, Dark Influence lacks a physical body of its own.
And that thought. How it “lacks” a body. Just sort of stuck around in my head. Because it’s funny, isn’t it? That Ring speaks and this thing doesn’t. That Dark Influence, this wildfire, is so strong and potent and infectious while Ring’s inner flames are so small and orderly and self-contained.
Tumblr media
And then I started thinking about coins. Isn’t it funny, that they’re shaped like little rings. Isn’t it funny, that they sometimes just. Spring out of the ground.
How does a free-to-play gym turn a profit. How do all of these gyms, turn a profit.
If NPCs canonically collect coins on their travels just like Trainee… If someone isn’t just throwing away buckets of money into the mountains and rivers and skies… if golden little rings can just spring into existence alongside someone as they’re jogging…
What if it’s not a quirk. What if it’s not just a game mechanic.
What if everything—the coins, the EXP medals, the treasure chests with Ring’s face on them—what if they’re all byproducts that occur when a physical place is saturated with high amounts of foot traffic. With high amounts of exercise energy. People in Ring Fit Adventure constantly expel this stuff as they jog or work out or engage in fit battles. They don’t really direct it anywhere after its release. It just kind of gets absorbed into their surroundings. I always assumed that it helped make the land so lush and pretty, but what if it doesn’t stop there. What if, when large quantities of it gather, exercise energy naturally builds up and condenses itself into permanent, physical solids.
And I thought of Ring. Of the coins that are shaped like him. Of the medals that eerily share his face. Of the treasure chests especially, the way they scream and run and flex as though alive. (And I thought about Dragaux, who’s canonically brilliant, and how even his best statues fell short of capturing that same quality of animation.) I thought about how all three of these byproducts are golden. Just. Like. Ring.
Tumblr media
Something like “dark” influence should have a natural counterpart. It’s a tale as old as time; perfect opposites, perfect enemies. But we never meet the Influence’s other half, do we? Just Ring.
Ring, our buddy, our pal. Ring, who’s a person in every way that matters, with hope and dreams and insecurities. Ring the “magical creature,” who, despite all of this, has more in common with Dark Influence than with any other creature in all of Ring Fit.
———
So here is the heart of my crazy theory.
Ring isn’t “partially” made of energy. He’s all energy, all the way down to his every last piece, whether it flows like a river or shines like a stone. And it could be that a long, long time ago, he existed much in the same way as the Dark Influence we fight in the game: as an unrestrained and formless entity. Not as a ring, but as a bright and brainless swathe of flames.
(Because if Dark Influence is insecurity and self-destruction and decay, balance would dictate its opposite be positivity, self-improvement, rebirth. A dangerously Bright Influence.)
And maybe it was just a natural process that got triggered when the conditions were right. But either way, somehow, someway, this particular Influence reincarnated into a shape that could better interact with people, without overwhelming or eating them. And that most natural shape condensed itself into Ring.
A baby Ring.
———
Even if you don’t buy into the existence of “Bright” Influence, Ring fully being some sort of life energy incarnate answers too many questions. It would explain why Ring is so good at manipulating exercise energy; it’s the most natural extension of himself. It would explain why Ring has the unique ability to sync with people; it’s how he originally used to exist, as life energy drifting in and out of living creatures. It would explain the aging. It would explain why Ring never mentions a parent or creator watching over him during childhood; because he came into this world totally alone. (Baby Ring belonged to no one before he belonged with Baby Drags.)
But Ring’s theoretical past life answers a few more questions. It could explain parts of Ring’s personality, his interests. (His dream of spreading positivity across the land.) It explains why there aren’t ten million Rings floating about, when coins and medals and chests are so relatively common. (Because there’s a key ingredient missing). It actually explains his five special powers. (Because I’m betting Influences have human-related origins. It’s either that, or “live humans being consumed” was part of the “perfect” conditions surrounding Ring’s birth. Which, cringe.) But more than anything, it addresses the sheer power imbalance happening between Ring and Dark Influence right now.
Dark Influence lacks boundaries and spreads itself like a virus, thoughtless and instinctive. Ring’s natural weapon against this thing should be to “infect” it right back. (I would expect some sort of sick light show to dance across Dragaux’s body during battle; yellow flames squaring off against purple.) But it doesn’t work that way. Ring the Person no longer works this way.
If Dark influence is a forest fire, then Ring is a fireplace set behind glass. At their core, these two are both energy. But the modes in which they exist divide them into separate skill sets entirely.
Dark Influence is wildfire of brute strength. It’s got range—in the spatial sense. It can spread to as many secondary hosts as Dragaux directs it to, so long as it’s fed well enough to reach for them. Compared to Ring’s measly one syncing partner, Dark Influence can sink itself into whole regions, can simultaneously feed off of so many people. It doesn’t have outright mind control powers; it’s more subtle than that. But its presence as negativity incarnate naturally works like a magnet to draw out the worst in people. There is nothing it enhances in a person that wasn’t already there, no matter how small the weakness. Coupled with the rush of power it imparts in its vessels, it makes bad decisions feel right. Even to good people. It’s, quite simply, a bad influence. (And then it consumes them.)
But other than that, Dark Influence doesn’t really do much.
Our bud Ring may only be able to light one house at a time, so to speak. But as contained as he is—Ring’s powers are more varied and nuanced, because Ring is more varied and nuanced. He’s always actively (and thoughtfully) applying energy to construct, convert, and amplify. For all its fearsome strength, the only thing Dark Influence can seemingly do on purpose, is feed.
———
(If Ring was once a being like Dark Influence, then that solves the final mystery of synchronization. If Dark Influence “infects” its host by sinking into the body, then Ring syncs with a partner by “planting” a piece of his essence inside them. This is why Trainee’s energy signature changes to mimic Ring’s; because she now carries a part of him in her beating heart. This is why Ring can freely access her energy; because this makes her a part of him now, too.)
Tumblr media
———
So. Let’s pretend I’m not crazy. Say that all of these little details I’ve collected were intentionally laid out by the game developers. Say I’m correct, and that Ring really is, essentially, the child of Dark Influence’s greatest natural enemy.
The real question is: how self aware is Ring about all of this.
Tumblr media
Because unfortunately, Ring not knowing his own backstory could be pretty on-brand for him. I love Ring, but from his point of view, it really could be that he just appeared one day, somehow—as an entirely clean slate. “Dark” or “bright,” these entities are brainless. Literally. No body means no brain. They can’t store memories, so they don’t have memories. Just energy.
Ring must know that he’s made from energy, too. He might even think of himself as one very lucky byproduct. But if this is really what Ring used to be (if there’s even a shadow of a chance that his predecessor used to eat people), then he might not know the full extent of his own story.
And maybe that’s for the best. I can’t imagine him choosing to get close to people otherwise. He loves people, cares so much about every single silly soul that he meets.
This would hurt him.
———
Whatever Ring’s origins may be, whatever he might have once been (if he’s ever been anything else at all)… I do know one thing. And it’s that I prefer him prefer him just the way he is.
Tumblr media
Weird comments about my sweat aside, I wouldn’t have him any other way.
———
TL;DR: Our bud Ring has more in common with Dark Influence than with any other creature in all of Ring Fit.
If a flaming entity of negative energy can exist, then why not one made of positive energy? If positive energy condenses into permanent solids naturally and often…if Ring is made of positive energy…if Ring has more in common with Dark Influence than with anything else in this game…
Who’s to say that Ring himself, wasn’t once a flaming yellow mass of energy.
———
This marks the end. I could run wild with all the implications this theory leaves in its wake. But I’ve made my point. I’ve found every answer I was looking for. And they may not have been the answers I was expecting (or even wanting), but they’ve satisfied me all the same.
I’m done. Believe what you will.
Thanks for reading, and for sticking with me all this way. It’s been real.
Letter To Democrats
I felt the need to do something besides raising awareness of environmental, indigenous, and socio-economic issues. I’ve decided to compose and then mail multiple printed copies of a letter to multiple politicians across the USA. I did wonder if I should copy-and-paste the letter to social media profiles like I did for the one that I wrote to President Biden. Ultimately, I decided that posting the letter would serve two purposes. First, I wanted to let indigenous activists know that they have another willing accomplice. Second, this could provide a decent template for anyone who also feels a need to write to political leaders and put pressure on them to take much-needed action. Without any further ado…
Greetings,
I am writing a generic letter to send to assorted politicians across the United States. For reasons that I will articulate over the course of this letter, I felt a serious need to address as many members of the American political leadership as possible. I do not intend to call you out personally. If you do take it as a personal callout, please consider why you feel that way.
The reports of wildfires, heat waves, and floods have filled many, many observers with existential terror. Some have even expressed utter despair over whether the world will be inhabitable by any form of life. At times I have been tempted to join the despair, to give up hope of ever leaving a beautiful legacy for future generations. For the sake of all the people of the world, I must fight that temptation. I need to do my part to fight for the future.
There are a large number of activists trying to protect the environment. However, they need help from people who have the power to make really concrete changes. That is why I am writing to you and other Democratic politicians. That does sound very partisan, but the sad fact is that the Republican party is almost a lost cause at this point. I wish to be proven wrong about that. The fact is that it already engaged in brutal obstruction during the Obama administration. A sinister side to the base already started emerging during that time as well. With the rise of Donald Trump, the much of its leadership and nearly all of its electoral base have become increasingly unwilling to offer the kind of compromise needed for a functional democracy.
The Democratic party as a whole has been criticized as very weak in opposing the radicalizing Republican Party. The current President has spoken of a desire for restoring national unity. That desire is certainly laudable in itself when Trump blatantly stoked resentment and division. Again, however, the Republican party and its core supporters have shown a complete unwillingness to work with any opponents in any way. They view their opponents as subversive enemies that need to be crushed underfoot. The Republican party has inched towards neo-fascism at a time when neo-fascism is mainstreaming around the world. The Republican party has also already been beholden to the selfish interests of major corporations for decades. It even seeks to magnify the already dire influence of corporations chiefly responsible for pollution. Its propaganda outlets outright deny pollution and mislead millions of people.
Some Democratic politicians have also been criticized as going along with corporate interests and watering down legislation meant to oppose corporate influence. By now it has become clear that corporate elites do not have the safety of the world and its human and nonhuman denizens in mind. By now it has become clear that they must be reined in for the greater good. The only language that major corporations even comprehend is money. Here I arrive at the first main point of this letter: I urge you to work with other Democratic leaders to divest from major corporations and their executives, especially those most directly responsible for polluting the Earth. I’ve also seen proposals that corporations be forced to contribute to removing as much pollution as possible. Quickening the transition away from fossil fuels is crucial.
However, alternate energy sources are not enough. Switching from gas-powered cars to electric cars is not enough. Building solar or wind farms in place of coal-burning power plants is not enough. Extraction and consumption cause their own serious problems. The problem of environmental degradation has roots that are far too deep and complicated to address here, though I will touch upon one later. Going hand-in-hand with corporate influence are the bad social and urban infrastructures that do not encourage sustainable lifestyles. I barely even know where to begin in this regard. Cities are too often built for cars and not people. Most people have to drive carbon-spewing cars to work at jobs that are not well-suited to their needs in order to pay their bills and feed their families. Too many people are left in poverty or near-poverty, some people are more-or-less isolated in suburbs, and a tiny handful are virtually untouchable in their wealth and privilege. Healthy food is not always accessible, and even when it is, it often has to be shipped very far from the source.
My second main point is this: in addition to transitioning to cleaner energy, the very infrastructure of our society needs to reformed. Local communities need to be lifted up so that they can better care for themselves without the need for distant figures constantly having to provide for them through convoluted supply chains. It’s true that right-wingers speak of “small government” with the unspoken agenda of leaving corporate oligarchs and ultra-conservative clergy to rule over ordinary human beings. Nonetheless, I believe that, at this point, government needs to assist in rebuilding communities so that they can eventually leave denizens to stand on their feet and care for each other. The pandemic, along with the poor responses of many local officials, has shown the need for communities to engage in mutual care.
I will confess that this exhortation is the vaguest one in this letter. I lack in-depth education on such matters. I bring it up in order to further nudge you in a direction that would be far better for the Earth and its people. I can offer one example of what must be done that is slightly clearer: helping communities establish gardens and small-scale farms to better feed themselves.
On a very important side note, this nation needs to divest from the military as well. The largest and most powerful military in history is known to be among the largest polluters on earth. Too many politicians seem to ignore how massive the military already is an insist on subsidizing it at the cost of actually building a peaceful and prosperous society.
I further wish to discuss the need to center indigenous peoples in renewing our society. No, I am no indigenous myself. I simply wish to point to their wisdom. Yes, the sagely magical Indian who is one with Mother Earth is a crude stereotype, and I have no intention of reinforcing it. With that said, I follow a number of indigenous writers, activists, spiritualists, and influencers on social media. I learned about how many indigenous people are attempting to reconnect to previously outlawed and hidden heritages. The stereotype could be rooted in reality.
In most cases, those heritages include animistic spiritualities, in which aspects of the natural world, from plants to animals to waters to stones, are seen as having spirits. Furthermore, these aspects of the natural world are seen as relatives to humans. I should note how some well-meaning white people, wishing to bond with the earth instead of submitting to organized religion, appropriate these indigenous spiritualties and associated practices. Indigenous writers will encourage such people to instead delve into their own pre-Christian heritages, which have similar animistic philosophies, however obscured by time they may be. I have actually been doing just that—though I won’t elaborate because I don’t want to center myself.
You may be asking, what is the relevance said common thread of the spiritualities of indigenous peoples? That animism seems to go hand-in-hand with methods of land care that developed over generations of trial and error, along with the principles behind those methods. With the subjugation and expulsion (and worse) of the land’s original caretakers, though, these practices fell into obscurity. The most dramatic example, perhaps, is the suppression of controlled burnings on the western coastline leading to the wildfires that we have seen in recent years. Indeed, the different lands of different indigenous nations need their own subtly distinct approaches, based on ecosystems, geographies, local histories, and general senses of place. Indigenous activists and figureheads are calling upon governments to heed their words on not only conservation but also regeneration.
One of the main demands that indigenous activists make is for the return of their lands, full sovereignty over them, and the facilitation of cultural revival. Yes, that is a very simple manner of justice and righting a historic wrong. It has become evident that their wisdom is a crucial piece of the puzzle of solving environmental problems as well. Simple “colorblind” or “globalized” liberalism won’t suffice when working for social or environmental justice. Indigenous activists argue that colonialism is at the root of so many of our world’s problems. Many of them even outright state that the “colonial state” in itself is a problem. I can see how colonialism has promoted the rise of an all-devouring capitalism and perpetuated it. The grim historical fact of how the enslavement of Black people and the elimination of indigenous peoples contributed to building this nation remains a grim historical fact.
I myself am figuring out the world and learning many truths, but I am sympathetic to people who have borne the brunt of colonialism. I welcome the humanistic achievements of modernity and utterly oppose fundamentalism and fascism, I assure you, but I’ve come to accept that the modern world is broken. Simple progress won’t heal the world. “Big government” certainly has a role to play in mobilizing the needed social changes, such as what I’ve alluded to above, but the “colonial state” needs to ultimately divest its own power.
I’ll try to summarize my points now. Major corporations and economic elites need to be drastically reined in and disempowered (along with the military). The transition to renewable energies needs to be quickened—but also needs to be accompanied by drastic changes to infrastructures and supply chains so as to result in less extraction and consumption. Localized communities need to be empowered so they can better care for themselves without much out faraway aid. Indigenous peoples need to be given their lands back, be elevated to leadership roles in caring for and regenerating said lands, and be empowered so they can rebuild their cultures. Settlers should learn from them as well. In the end, the state and the socio-economic system that it has upheld need to recede—not for billionaires or grand inquisitors or dictators, but for ordinary people and the earth. In truth, humans are meant to be a part of nature, and the generational challenge is for humanity to reconcile with the rest of nature.
This all may sound idealistic or radical. This past summer has shown us that we shouldn’t settle for anything less than radical social change. This nation, which has been a major world power for over a century, needs to be radically reimagined. This all may sound vague as well. I have little education in politics and governance apart from what I’ve tried to learn for myself across the internet. That is all the more reason for people like you—people with more real-world power than I—to push along radical social change. This letter is meant to raise awareness of your duty as a leader. A leader is meant to be a guide, not a dominator. There’s a chance that you could be recorded in history as a leader who did what was necessary to make the world’s healing and renewal possible.
Thank you.
You may call me Brian Solomon Whiterose.
Sothis, the Church of Seiros and Byleth: A Pagan Reading
Due to L!Byleth and the minor hyperfixation he caused I decided to make a whole discussion on how I personally view Sothis, the Church of Seiros as a whole, and examine Byleth's role in the story.
So just some ground rules before I begin:
This is just how I personally viewed the story as I played it, and my own perspective on the plot and meaning behind certain things. I am open to discussion in the comments and reblogs, and if you disagree with my opinion that's perfectly fine. Also so much of this is going to read like headcanons/assumptions loosely supported by canon's thin red strings and I am ok with that.
If any in-game quotes are used they will mostly come from the Church Library since it's easy to check but I'll paraphrase important scenes that I can remember.
Also after compiling a timeline of events best I can understand it I have made a few assumptions: worship of Sothis existed before the Church of Seiros (perhaps even going as far back as pre-Calamity times) and thus Church doctrine and beliefs is largely based upon previously established beliefs about the Goddess. This doesn't have too much to do with the analysis itself, but I just wanted to say it as I quote The Book of Seiros parts a few times and the writings in those books I hold to have a basis in that pre-Church faith.
With those in place, allow me to begin.
The Sothis/Church of Seiros Meta:
While there have been many metas comparing Sothis and the Church to medieval Christianity, I have always looked at them both through a distinctly non-Christian, Pagan lense.
I myself am a syncretic polytheist who has a complicated history with Southern Baptists. These two core aspects of my spiritual life does color my perceptions of the religion presented in this game and I am fully aware of that. Three Houses came at a time in my life where I was finally seperating myself from my latent Christianity, and exercising my Pagan goggles on this was a major step I took towards that. My intention here isn't to say that Christian coding doesn't exist, but to simply give my ideas and perspective on the religion presented in this game.
First, allow me to give the define the Gods through the lense of a Pagan as it's important to the framing of my ideas:
"The Gods are real, sentient, disembodied minds with awesome greatness and powers beyond what we humans can currently explain with science."
This is the simplest, shortest definition of the Gods I can give and Sothis, beyond a shadow of a doubt, hits all of the criteria as she is presented in the game. The Pagan conception of the Gods does not require any pretense of tri-omnism, and I believe it's best to look at Sothis, and many other FE Gods, through this lense. Sothis, when she was alive and even when she is "dead," is capable of amazing feats such as creating life, turning back time in a limited capacity, and restoring entire continents to life after calamity. While she is not tri-omni, she does not need to be so to be a Goddess and one worthy of worship and reverence.
Church doctrine itself also exhibits other fundamental aspects of Pagan practice and belief that are important to me and many others: animism and the reciprocity cycle. As stated by The Book of Seiros, Part 1,
"The Revelation.The Goddess is all things. She is heaven above and the land below. She is eternity incarnate. She is the present, the past, and the future. Her eyes see all. Her ears hear all. Her hands receive all."
Obvious allusions to omnipresence aside, another reading of this passage is a far more esoteric, and hard to put into words, aspect of Pagan belief about the Gods. In a sense , the Gods are not limited by the physical constraints of the world and their bodies are inherently an aspect of the very universe itself. They are not omnipresent at all times, but they can be wherever they wish to be especially wherever their presence and power is strongest. That is actually the purpose of idols, alters, and temples. The Gods are not idols or are bound by them, those things are simply repositories to allow us humans to connect with and worship them.
The natural world as well can be the "body" of a God. Places where their spirits decide to dwell. Natural phenomenon one can feel their presence in. They are not limited to these places, but upkeep of them is necessary to maintain their power and spirit. In this way that passage can be read as Fodlan and the Blue Sea Star being the places where Sothis' spirit chooses to reside along with her actual remains needing to be maintained to keep her spirit maintained. Her sacred body likely extends across all of Fodlan and her spirit resides most strongly as the Blue Sea Star.
Gods in FE also, more often than not, have a physical body that is important for their connection to the physical world. FE Gods are not incapable of interacting with or watching over the physical world from the spiritual, but have much more free reign when their physical body is alive. The places where their bodies are buried are where their power is most heavily felt, and their spirits the strongest, as evidenced by the Mila Tree and the Good Ending of Future Past in Awakening. This what I believe the true purpose of the Sealed Forest to be. Given how protective Rhea is of the place, the strange alter and Crest of Flames that is just there, and that being where Byleth awakens and Sothis remembers, either parts or the entire rest of Sothis' physical body must be buried there and not actually in the Holy Tomb.
As an aside, the remains of the Nabateans can also be seen through this lense but to a lesser degree. It's obvious that parts of their souls and power remain with their bodies, and thus, maintaining the Relics, Crestsones, and the other Nabatean remains not fashioned into weapons would be of utmost importance to Rhea. Because, if they were to be lost or damaged her kin's spirits may forever be lost to the physical world.
Fodlan being the sacred body of Sothis is also why I believe the Church of Seiros to be an ethnic religion and a henotheistic one to the people of Fodlan. The Goddess is only ever credited in the creation story and a lot of other Church doctrines as having created and choosing Fodlan as her sacred ground. The people of Fodlan likewise are seen as her sacred people. Nothing in Church doctrine says that Sothis is the only God to exist and I truly cannot remember a single instance where anyone says other religions outside the Church are false ones. Hence why I say Fodlanders are henotheistic, where they do not deny the existence of other Gods, but Sothis is the most important and only one worshipped by them. To the people of Fodlan as long as foreigners do not deny her existence and those of Fodlandic descent worship her as they should there is no cause for an uproar.
This is not to say other religions can be practiced freely on Sothis' sacred ground, as evidenced by the women in Abyss who says she worships there "because Abyss is where it is allowed." Along with Atheism among Fodlanders to be a taboo in their societies. Whilst I don't see the Church to be a beacon of religious tolerance (or that Fodlanders don't believe their religion to be the best), I also do not believe them to be proselytizers to places outside of Fodlan.
The reciprocity cycle also has a place within Church doctrine. The Book of Seiros, Part V describes the various commandments Sothis gave to her people and how if they abide by them the Goddess pays the people back with blessings and gifts. Textbook reciprocity is doing something for the Gods, such as sacrifice or ritual, and gaining something back in return or the Gods do something for you and you give back to them in turn. Reciprocity can be as simple as giving thanks for the blessings the Gods give or complex as full ritual, sacrifice, and or prayer to gain a blessing/aid or give thanks for one. The best case of reciprocity I see in game is the restoration quest for the Saint Statues. Whilst the Saints are complicated in how I believe their divinity is handled there is no doubt the player receives blessings from them for restoring their icons.
(While I would like to devote an entire section to them and the Nabateans in general like 80 - 90% of my ideas are headcanon that I'm still not sure of. I don't think the Nabateans are Gods like Sothis is however immortal or long-lived they may be. I also still don't know whether the Saints would be worshiped or venerated in the Church, as I still don't understand the distinction of those two things myself, so I don't want to make a judgement call).
What about Byleth?
Byleth...is tricky. Now, I must preface, that all of this is my opinion. Some of it may not be supported by the game, but this is how I personally write him and his status regarding everything we see in game.
Byleth is, for all intents and purposes, the 13th potential vessel for Sothis to return to the world as they were given Sothis' Creststone on the request of Sitri. Here's the thing. I personally do not believe that Sothis is truly dead or that Byleth manifested her consciousness on happenstance.  It has been my personal belief ever since playing the game for the first time that Sothis' spirit does indeed reside in the heavens and that the piece of Sothis that resides in Byleth until his awakening is only a fragment. Along with that I believe that Sothis' consciousness and power manifested in Byleth specifically because Sothis wished for it to be so.
My ideas are centered around a few aspects of the game that have always stood out to me as rather strange if kept in line with the larger context.
Why after all this time and Rhea's many attempts did Sothis manifest in a stillborn child?
How was Sothis able to speak to Byleth and wake him after his 5 year coma?
Why does Byleth loose the Goddess' power at the end of Crimson Flower?
How was Sothis able to speak to Byleth if you choose to S-Support her?
How exactly was Byleth able to dream about something that happened long after Sothis' death even if he can access her memories?
These sticking points have always struck as odd given everything that Sothis says before Byleth's awakening. Sothis should not be able to speak to Byleth at all, but still does so only a few chapters later and comments on the war that Byleth was only privy to the very beginning of.
Hence my belief that Sothis' spirit as the Goddess of Fodlan does reside in the heavens, watching over the continent, and only able to interact with it and its people in subtle ways. Some of her spirit and power laid within her Creststone as it passed from vessel to vessel. One way or another, she was able to foresee the coming war that would change Fodlan fundamentally forever and chose to manifest that piece of her consciousness when the opportunity presented itself. It's why Byleth can dream of a battle that happened long after Sothis' death because he's remembering something experienced by the Creststone and knowledge given by the Goddess soul who resides in heaven.
I also believe that Byleth and Sothis as we saw them during the game was a mistake in some way. Byleth as his own entity was likely not supposed to be and the piece of Sothis' soul that was supposed to manifest wasn't supposed to be amnesiatic or at the very least not separate from Byleth. There were a few times pre-time skip where Sothis would be talking and Byleth's model would be moving and his facial expression changing. Almost like their thoughts were so intertwined that they were practically the same even before the awakening. It's very likely to me that Byleth's memory issues, lack of ability to properly express emotions, and other aspects of their character to be directly connected to the fact that Sothis' soul manifested incorrectly.
The Sothis he hears before waking from his coma and the one he speaks to during his S support is likely the full spirit of the Goddess communicating with him through great effort and only able to because he's her avatar. She knows of the pain Fodlan is experiencing because she can see it and feel it even as Byleth slumbers. Same thing for why Byleth would lose her power and soul piece on Crimson Flower, as Sothis may have interpreted siding with Edelgard as a rejection of being her avatar and simply deciding to be human instead (I don't wish to speak too long on a route I don't particularly like, but I felt that strange ending should be addressed).
My experience as someone who follows a Kemetic path leads me to not see Sothis' soul being split in this way as strange. In this particular religion, as I understand it, the soul is encompassed as multiple different parts all combining to make a singular being. Both Gods and humans have multiple parts to their souls, so one residing in the Creststone, later manifesting in Byleth, and another part residing in the heavens is plausible to me. Also if I wanted to compare Byleth to another FE character, his situation reminds me most of Nagi from FE 11 & 12 who is an amnesiac and likely an incarnation of Naga to aid Marth on his quest. Nagi doesn't get much characterization in those games, but it does show that incarnations/avatar of Gods, who aren't the confusing mess of Robin and Grima for instance, isn't a new concept in series for Byleth.
In terms of what happens after Byleth awakens I do believe that Byleth himself becomes a God or at the very least a demi-god in his own right. As it was Byleth absorbing the piece of Sothis' soul into his own, the Goddess' power was inherited by him alone. The inner turmoil caused by two souls sharing one body finally ceased and Byleth was fundamentally changed becoming, well, an Enlightened One. As the game doesn't really explore Sothis and Byleth much post-Time Skip, due to the war taking precedence and Byleth's unfortunate existence as a silent protag, how exactly he changes is up to personal interpretation. I personally believe he gained not only Sothis' power but some of Sothis' memories and insight that the Creststone soul piece had. He also gained greater control and range of emotional expression and probably took on some of the characteristics Sothis had.
Byleth is both an avatar of the Goddess and his own person at the same time. He is and is not Sothis.
Looking for Monoatomic Gold
In the late '70s, while he was extracting gold from his land, David Hudson, a farmer from Arizona, noticed some materials of strange composition and coloring and precisely in correspondence with their presence, the vegetation was significantly robust and lush. David invested several million dollars in the following decade to understand how to obtain and use with these materials but it was only in 1989 that he managed to obtain more patents on these materials and on the methods to extract them. Although other researchers had made similar discoveries in the same period and earlier, Hudson was the first to inform the public about it so during the early 1990s, he traveled around the United States holding several seminars and conferences on his findings.
The elements discovered by him are in close connection with objects and substances present in history and reading such as the Biblical Manna, the Egyptian MFKZT, the Mesopotamian Shem-an-na, the Philosopher's Stone, the Elixir of Youth, Orgone energy, Prana, Chi, the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant, and to the concepts of modern physics such as superconductivity, Quantum coherence and Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), a new state of matter discovered thanks the velocity distribution of the atoms and their condensation state.
These elements have been called ORME (Orbitally Rearranged Monatomic Elements) and also Elements in the M state, m-state, Monoatomic Gold, White Gold Powder, ORMUS, AuM, Microcluster and have a fundamental feature that distinguishes them from all the other elements: the orbitals with an electron available for rearrangement, therefore capable of changing shape according to the magnetic field with which they come into contact, a behavior similar to a stem cell. Currently the most controversial is the so-called MONOATOMIC GOLD which was already known to some of the great civilizations of the past: the Jews called it "Manna" or "The bread of God", the Egyptians "Tear from the eye of Horus", the Indians "Vibhuti or Bhasma of gold". It is said that there is Monoatomic Gold in the legendary Atlantis: it is also called a metal of flames, it is a substance with a mysterious property of emitting unique energy, better known as "Orichalcum".
Monoatomic Gold and Alchemy
In alchemy, this substance is the "Golden Chalice" which helps transform the lead of the human mind (the ego, with its negative and closed structures) into gold. It is essential to emphasize that alchemists were not looking for the gold we all know, but the white powder or projection powder that we now call Monoatomic Gold, a transformation of the three-dimensional structure of common gold into two-dimensional gold, to which, already in antiquity, extraordinary powers of levitation, transmutation and teleportation were recognized.
In ancient Egypt, during the gold melting process, there were always small amounts of melted gold in the oven. These remains suffered continuously a process of melting and solidifying from cold to hot, since they were not removed from the oven. Over time, artisans discovered small quantities of white dust where gold waste had previously accumulated. Through this constant alternation of heat and cold, the common gold had become white powder that some of the craftsmen ended up tasting by discovering the most powerful substance capable of altering human consciousness and physiology. Its effects remained for several days to those who had consumed it: also mummies were found in possession of this white powder.
Even in ancient India we find the formula to make the alchemical gold that Hindu alchemists called "Puttah". The most eminent members of some ancient families were used to ingest it regularly in small quantities.
The famous alchemist who made the "Philosopher's Stone" (Stone of Sage), Nicolas Flamel (1330) in his alchemy thesis, writes that mercury and sulfur, various metals are melted in the furnace fire and distilled to proceed with work then the substance changed to black, gray white, green, white, orange and finally became rosy purple stone like poppy flower. And after all, the philosopher's stone was completed: he said that three times in all he converted mercury to gold with the Philosopher's stone.
A mysterious metal appears in the "Takeuchi documents" which Takeuchi Sukune, a Takeuchi family who served the Emperor has been told as an oral message. It is similar to the flickering of the flames but vermillion, never rusting metal. His specific gravity is lighter than gold, its pure substance is softer than iron, a legendary metal that becomes harder than platinum when alloyed. It is said to be "Hihiirokane" which was mined at Mt.Kakakono.
Monoatomic Gold and the Anunnaki
Zecharia Sitchin claimed that an alien race from the planet Nibiru, the Anunnaki, came to Earth in search of gold, and that man was created to serve as a worker in the extraction of this metal. Some scholars have suggested that perhaps the substance capable of saving their world and making them physically healthy and immortal was actually Monoatomic Gold and not common gold: the surprising result of combining the theories of Anunnaki and ORME leads to the almost inevitable conclusion that the purpose of the Anunnaki to arrive on Earth was to acquire the monoatomic elements in order to ingest them and therefore to be able to lead a long life. David Hudson himself argue that the primary form in which gold is found in seawater is in its monoatomic state therefore the first attempt by the Anunnaki to obtain gold would have been to extract it from seawater, in especially the upper part of the Persian Gulf where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers meet.
Tumblr media
Sitchin and numerous researchers, including British essayist Laurence Gardner, reached the following conclusions:
The inhabitants of the planet Nibiru came to Earth with the main purpose was to extract gold and precious elements and to have a workforce capable of satisfying their needs they created humanity to which they provided the rudiments of civilization.
They would also have provided the organic and natural equivalent of ORME, the knowledge of its importance and the method by which it could be made and brought internally by the individual to selected individuals (such as kings and patriarchs ..): thus justifying their extraordinarily long life and the reason for their presence in leadership roles.
Monoatomic gold today: the discovery of extraordinary properties
Even today, monoatomic gold, due to its surprising characteristics, is being studied more and more, as it has a completely different atomic structure than the original metallic condition. Traces of monoatomic gold are also found in nature, but metallic gold can be transformed into monoatomic gold only through an alchemical process. These are the very particular physical and energy characteristics of monoatomic gold: It is a superconductor at room temperature and it seems to behave like an energy producer by being able to give, accumulate and receive light / information / energy without any loss. Its electrons merge with antielectrons and form opposite beams of light that rotate around the oval core and, at the same time, it produces an etheric prana vortex, which flows along a double helix through the nucleus of the atom which corresponds to the Kundalini energy. It produces a zero magnetic field (Meissner field, that is, it has the ability to "move" the magnetic field away from itself) around itself, which corresponds to man's MER-KA-BA. Merkaba is the light body of man, which includes spirit, life energy and soul. When they merge they form a unit that produces beams of light in counter rotation and able to overcome space and time.
Monoatomic gold exists only on 5/9 on the physical plane.
Pure monoatomic gold rises on the earth's magnetic field.
It does not wear out and its function and longevity are eternal.
Tumblr media
According to the testimony of a group of alchemists, who have taken Monoatomic Gold for years, they have been able to observe the following physiological and energetic reactions (which coincide with ancient Egyptian texts, the Bible and the Vedas):
Regeneration of damaged cells including also brain neuronal cells
Strong activation of the endocrine glandular system especially as regards the pituitary gland, thymus and pineal gland
Significant increase in the flow of light and photons in both the meridian and nervous systems
Strengthening the immune system and increasing self-healing capacity
Increase in superconducting capacity and DNA energy flow
Reversal of the aging process which is significantly slowed down thanks to the energetic repair of the wrong programs in our DNA
Rebalancing and harmonious elevation of the frequencies of the chakras, of the body and of the Kundalini energy
Induction of an emotional balance
Expansion of the level of intelligence
Increase in stress management capacity
Strengthening the ability to manifest one's thoughts
Increased inner peace
Acquisition of greater clarity in the vision of external situations and consequent problem solving skills
Awakening of dormant potential
General improvement of the quality of life at all levels, both physical, emotional, mental and spiritual
