Baoxiang and Ouyang being devastated about Esen's death would have been predictable, everyone would know it, but what amazed me is their devastation to the knowledge that Esen's death was worthy of nothing, it gave no realization. Maybe just one: that they wasted their chance to tell how much they loved each other out loud. They will no longer be able to fix it, because Esen is dead and he will never come back and there is nothing that can console them because they were the ones who killed him for the belief that revenge would fill the emptiness they had inside. But it didn't. They lost and became mentally unstable because they didn't grasp how much more important love was. They couldn’t believe it or understand it. All of them failed to nurture their true good feelings, in order to adapt into what society ot destiny expected, and they paid for it with agony.

the takeaway that Ma is the best and most morally superior character in SWBTS not because she is a compassionate person who sees the corrupting influences of power but because *checks notes and tumblr tag* she is "most in touch with her feminine side" is so hilariously reductive to me when the themes of gender complexity, fluidity and presentation all but form the meat and bones of this duology (written by a nonbinary author btw) and Parker-Chan is literally on their KNEES begging us to investigate how gender can sometimes be informed by the way society ostracizes some individuals.

can we please not impose weird binary essentialist takes on this series? I know the fandom has a misogyny problem esp in certain aspects of their representation and discussion of Zhu and Ma, but the answer does not lie in "waaaa femme cis sapphic good and trans/agender characters bad!!!"

Rangi was getting tired by the end of the day. She was fit but she wasn't strong or super athletic by any means, so by the time the third day rolled around and she'd been pushing around a cart with a missing wheel for eight hours a day, yeah, her arms were a little floppy. She shoved her cart up into a corner and collapsed onto the ground beside it, making sure she was in a spot where people couldn't easily see her. She kept telling herself that this was fine and that she totally didn't mind but neither of those things were true-- which is why she hadn't said them out loud.

Frowning, she looked up when she heard feet crunching along the path and leapt up quickly, thinking it might be someone telling her to get back to it. "Sorry! I was just taking a small-- oh." It was someone Rangi didn't recognize and she took a quick glance around before looking back at them. "Can I help you?"
