the radiant emperor series may be a buddy comedy, but it is also the worst group project ever. zhu and ouyang spend most of both books working towards the same goal in very different ways. a fraction of this is actually spent working together. ouyang fucks off halfway through hwdtw to do the thing they agreed to HIS way. they attempt to kill each other several times.

nothing could have prepared me for zhu and ouyang's mutually beneficial s/m relationship as a way to illustrate their literally linked paths, but it makes so much sense considering their connection was forged of individual pain and escalated through mutually inflicted pain. and when there was nothing else for ouyang but the feeling of pain, it could only ever be zhu who understood why he needed what he did and it could only ever be zhu to see him at his most open, most fragile, and use it as a means for strength rather than humiliate ouyang like anyone else would have. for a brief moment in their lives, their paths were the same one and they spoke a language with each other no one else could.
