this year my challenge for everyone is to unlearn the association between love and morality. love is not something that is inherently morally good, and the absence of love is not something that is inherently bad. sex without love isn't morally bankrupt, it's just an action. people without love aren't less kind or less good, they're just people. when we can get past this false (and often unnoticed) dichotomy of good love/evil lovelessness then i think we are going to be able to take leaps and bounds in sex positivity, aro advocacy, certain discussions of mental health...

Most annoying NMJ or JC take is when someone that dislikes them is like "oh you're a fan of him? *scoff* Well obviously you've only seen cql, where he was super watered down. On Kuras and empathy vs. compassion:

In the light of Kuras’s radial chart revealing he has low empathy, I just wanna say just because he struggles with being empathetic doesn’t put him at odds with his duty as a doctor necessarily.

I think one conflict we’ll see in his route is that just because he feels compassion for his patients(compassion means relieving the suffering of someone, and that’s what he does as a doctor) cannot be a substitute for his lack of empathy.

Though, I feel Kuras’s lack of empathy doesn’t stem from thinking humans are inferior to him but because he doesn’t have an fundamental understanding of the depth of human emotion and the agony of their suffering.

Him probably teaching humanity all his knowledge was his way, I suppose, of demonstrating he cares for them but it spectacularly blew up in his face. This leads to where his sense of guilt stems from, as he probably has a rigid moral code as an angel that icily operates from what HE thinks is best for them, which could be completely incompatible from what humans ACTUALLY need.

I keep thinking of his comment to MC - “I rarely come across so fascinating a patient.” At the time, humans were that interesting thing Kuras was enraptured by and he tried to help them in his own warped way but that obviously went bad because he couldn’t understand them. MC could become the new thing he’s fascinated by, but with his curiosity paired with his lack of empathy, this could be repetition of his most tragic mistakes but 10000000% worst as he’s already at his wits ends.

We’re basically on a medical malpractice speedrun with Kuras and I’m loving the ride.

Hm. So to be completely honest I don't think I'm vibing with My Stand-In as much as I thought I would. The series is beautifully filmed and everyone is doing a beautiful job but I just can't get into this trope of one half of the couple treating the other - really kind - half like shit.

I even went so far as to read up on novel spoilers and apparently that's the main trope of the novel? And it's part of a whole novel series of 'tops' hurting 'their bottoms' before everyone gets their happily ever after?

That's... really not for me.

Even just watching this second ep made me so upset for Joe and I immediately latched onto the love rival for my own peace of mind. 🤣

I guess we all have tropes that squick us out. I can watch Love Syndrome no problem (which is weird because it has similar tropes - maybe it's because it's far less realistic) and I actually do like angst and tragedy but for some reason... nope, the vibe just isn't there.

I'll continue watching because I love YDDS and I love all the actors involved (and if there's even one frame of Winner Tanatat I'll make a gifset out of it). And maybe I'm just in a weird state of mind right now and can't enjoy the show for what it is. Maybe once we're back in the present and Ming will change his ways I'll start liking it more - but right now it's really difficult for me to feel compassionate for someone who's so manipulative with his partner. It's just a pet peeve of mine. :((

ruminating on ur tags about empathy being a flawed primary source bc i love that so much. i think empathy shouldn't be considered a good primary source for anything other than the general gist of events that took place. eye witness testimony is one of the most inaccurate ways of providing evidence, if not THE most inaccurae . Not even out of malicious lying, but just how unreliable memories actually are. Especially tinted with nostalgia or other strong emotions!

Yes, yes, exactly this! One of the reasons I love CQL is that they take full advantage of the change in storytelling format to break away from WWX's limited POV and show us what the other characters are experiencing, and one of the most interesting choices to me is their decision to make NMJ's Empathy flashbacks clearly unreliable. While they do show us additional content that we hadn't seen previously (ex: the confrontation on the Jinlintai stairs, the continuation of the 3zun scene in Nightless City after MY kneels), they also show us versions of events that are just straight-up not what we saw happen in real time. @xiyao-feels has detailed write-ups and side-by-side video comparisons of the scenes we see twice that are worth a look.

And yeah, as you said, NMJ's bias doesn't make him a lying liar who can't be trusted at all. The events in question happened over a decade ago and all of them elicited intense, complicated, often-unpleasant emotions. Besides, while his CQL self is more intact than his MDZS self both spiritually and physically, he's still a dead body choked with resentment when WWX encounters him. Of course his cognition isn't crystal-clear and perfectly objective! That set of scenes lives in my mind rent-free because it tells us as much about NMJ as it does about JGY, and there is sooooo much to unpack about da-ge's experiences and the mark they left on him.

#that said: this fun feature of Empathy is muddled by A-Qing's Empathy flashbacks #which ARE framed as What Definitely For Sure Happened bc we don't have anything to compare them to #nor do we have any reason to doubt A-Qing since she exists in CQL to spectate the Yi City drama on the audience's behalf #(rare instance of a female character who had MORE agency/personality/importance in the novel) #whereas NMJ and JGY and their convoluted divorce have been recurring secondary fixtures in the story and we know they both have issues
