I think one of the reasons Meg's actually allowed to act like a child while other characters her age from the other rrverse series weren't as much is because ToA has a lot more important adult characters than the previous series did.

Because of the massive age gap between Apollo and Meg, Meg doesn't have to act like a grown up. Although he's a dumbass and Meg's servant, Apollo is still the adult of the duo and takes most "grown up" responsibilities away from Meg, as well as just being there to support her and giving her a shoulder to cry on. Emmie and Jo are two important characters who take in and protect kids. Luguselwa is a mother figure to Meg and her siblings. Piper's dad is the one to comfort her after the Burning Maze incident. Dionysus even helps the campers (at least Nico's) mental health for once. It makes sense to have a lot of good older characters in the books to contrast with the terrible parental figures, like Nero and Zeus, and show that there are adults who the kids can rely on. This isn't even mentioning Sally and Paul who we already knew were amazing

I think it's time to put this out there :3

EDIT:

To clear up confusion, I left off Apollo & Nico because

1) Apollo would SLAUGHTER everybody on this poll because He Is The Queer Rep and

2) Nico is very very popular and the poll would be rigged if I put him in, giving him a very unfair advantage over Every Other Very Very Good Queer Rep we have here.

Also apparently Reyna is AlloAce instead of Aro...huh. To me she gave off some strong Aro vibes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also, I understand Will Solace is Bisexual in TSATS- however, in as few words as possible, there are so many retcons in TSATS that contradicted canon, so I do not see TSATS as canon. Reasons why are a whole essay that I do not want to write.

Because of this, I still see Will as Gay, as do many others in this fandom. There is absolutely no disrespect intended from this-remember, this is a fictional book series about fictional characters. We are allowed to interpret characters in different ways, and I just so happen to interpret Will as Gay.

Please do not get upset over this, all character interpretations are just as valid as yours. Thank you.

MORE VAMPIRE AU: Meg is a regular human child who Apollo is certain has got to be a werewolf but no she’s just Like That but hey now she’s got friends!! Nero bullied her into collecting blood for him WHICH IS SO HORRIBLE AND NOT TRAUMATISING AT ALLLLL (this is a serious point of conflict between Meg and Apollo. The fact that he needs blood and she at first is like “yeah of course I completely get it (in the same way Nero manipulated her into thinking collecting blood for him is necessary)” and then is like “actually um this makes me really really nervous. Because that was a Bad Thing and this thing reminds me of That Thing and now I don’t know what’s right at all and it’s really scary.”) Commodus ends up as part of Nero’s (actually Python’s but shhhhh) vampire gang and he does Not want to be there but he’d rather go back to Apollo than admit that he’d rather be with Apollo than be here. He’s very VERY in denial.

Emmie was dying when Apollo found her and he decided to turn her into a vampire out of love and respect for Rhoeo. Then she joined Artemis’ were gang and looks SUPER funky as she’s now both vampire and a were-thing. Then one day she met Jo (ran away from an actual gang, in hiding as a mechanic now) who fell in love with her on account of her being Super Weird and Emmie decided to leave everything to live with Jo. Given the closeness usually held between vampires and the vampires they turn, Apollo is salty that Emmie just Left. But is trying to logic himself with knowing that he would have loved to do the same a long time ago. This salt quickly crumbles when he sees how happy she is with her wife and is revealed (to himself, everyone already knew) to just be his gnawing jealousy.

sssarah, the empousa who migrated into the family and is now half-pet half-cousin

reyna, the oldest sister who visits home every weekend

leo, the main character, repairman, best cooker and most chaotic

calypso, the kid who leaves at the crack of dawn and comes home at midnight

hunter kowalski, the aunt who visits once in a blue moon and you sort of forgot about her but she brings tons of presents so she makes up for that

georgina, the youngest sibling who everyone will protect with their lives

So, I've seen some anger with how Jo and Emmie were handled in Riordan's Trials of Apollo, with some saying they got "kicked out" of the Hunters of Artemis for being lesbians. But, I re-read the book they appear in and....it doesn't imply that at all.

They specifically said "They loved the Hunt but they loved each other more" and make it clear, it was a CHOICE to leave the Hunters of Artemis. They're even, still in service to Artemis in a way by caring for the Waystation. The problem wasn't that they were gay. The problem was that they chose to act on their romantic feelings.

Because swearing to be Hunters is about forewarning off romantic affections. Yes, the vows specifically focus on men, but the IDEA is still there. No romance of ANY kind I know one post showed an image saying the Hunters were all asexual or something like that but A) That's dumb and B) It's unrealistic. Not every woman saved from a bad marriage or relationship or what have you is asexual even if they take Artemis's vow. People in the real world can take vows of chastity or the like and still have sexual desires. I imagine the Hunters of Artemis are still able to FEEL romantic feelings. It's more that Artemis doesn't want them ACTING on those emotions. She'd probably not care if a Hunter got a crush (hell she might even blame Aphrodite more than them) but she'd make it clear that ACTING on those feelings wasn't permitted within the Hunters. That being one of the Hunters of Artemis meant not being swayed by the feelings of romance. And I don't doubt she'd allow Lesbian's in as long as they followed the same rules. Romantic feelings are fine. ACTING on those romantic feelings though? Not so much.

I'm sure Jo and Emmie could've stayed Hunters even if they were gay. It's that they chose to follow their romantic feelings was the issue. They cared about each other more than their vows to Artemis. They even say themselves they weren't kicked out. It was a choice to give up their imortality, and they left the Hunters on good terms with her. I could easily imagine them just going to Artemis and telling her themselves that while they enjoyed their lives as Hunters, they were in love and wanted to act on that love and while she didn't like romance, she was cool with it.

I will also say that I don't get why people might not like their being an exception for lesbian relationships. I honestly like that. It's consistent of Artemis. Her thing isn't "Oh relationships with MEN are the problem. Romance with men are terrible whereas romances between two women are perfect and amazing" her thing is "Romance of any kind can makes people stupid and do stupid things and I don't want romantic relationships in my organization." And before you say 'that's unfair', do bear in mind. Artemis is a GREEK God. Ancient Greek romance stories almost ALL sucked. Just look at Kronos and Rhea, Gaia and Ouranous, Zeus and Hera, Apollo, and ANY of his lovers. With those as her examples for romance, I don't blame her for thinking it's not all that. Besides, I feel like a piece of media saying "vows not to partake in romantic relationships don't count if it's lesbian/gay relationship" is honestly WORSE than saying they do.

Reading The Dark Prophecy: Chapter 7 (SPOILERS)

"BEING PRODUCTIVE. Ugh." Okay, we're immediately on the same page.

"I never found out what sort of bugs were in the bug juice" A shame.

"Soon I would be stuck between Emmie and Calypso discussing kale-growing techniques and Leo and Josephine waxing poetic about carburetors." This is Leo getting revenge for the three books he spent stuck as the seventh wheel. And before we move on, CARBURETOR (n.): a device used by an internal combustion engine to control and mix air and fuel entering the engine

"Speak of the daimon" I like this substitute. "All da cows love Leo." Since cows are ladies, of course they would love Leo. "And these cows are red, man." Uhh, aren't red cows Apollo's thing? Like, these are Apollo's cows, right? This is either very good or very bad. "Red cows were my favorite. For centuries I had a herd" Oh, so not all of them. Just one particular herd. These are not his, then. Apollo getting teary-eyed about red little cows is the best freaking thing, though.

"I will make a constellation out of you. I will call it the Small Exploding Latino." "I like it!" Unfazed. Notable how turning someone into a constellation can be used as both a threat and a great honor. Or maybe the great honor is why Leo is unfazed. Also, here we have confirmation of what I was wondering earlier. Despite being the god of the sun, Apollo can still create constellations. So can other gods, probably.

"the last three millennia of popular music" That's a... lot. Does Calypso have the brain space to learn all that? Does Apollo have the brain space to remember all that to teach her?

"Leo cut the cheese. (You can interpret that any way you want.)" What other ways are there to interpret that? What does "cut the cheese" mean? CUT THE CHEESE (Canada, US, euphemistic, slang): to fart (flatulate) I'm from the US and I've never heard of this.

"bright red all the way through" Mama, where does chocolate milk come from? Why, from brown cows, of course!

"The cheddar wheel turned out to be bright red all the way through and quite tasty." "sweet red cream" I wonder if there are any blue cows out there that the Jacksons might be interested in.

"as if it were a third-place prize from a three-person competition." I'm loving these similes.

"the Triumvirate had sabotaged all forms of communication used by demigods . . . ventriloquist puppets" First of all, how did the Triumvirate sabotage all of this? What kind of arcane magic stops ALL IRIS MESSAGES along with literally everything else? Also, I want to know what demigod is using ventriloquism as a form of long-distance communication.

"Apollo, show them your talking arrow." So he did bring it!

"They dropped their forks and covered their ears." "Never before has any voice dared to utter a limerick in this house, Apollo." I WANT TO KNOW. WHAT GRIEVANCE. RICK RIORDAN. HAS AGAINST LIMERICKS. They're not that bad! They're a lot of fun, actually! Is this, like, some kind of childhood English class trauma? Stuck for hours trying to get the perfect limerick to hand in the next day and still gets a D-? Limericks as the do-now assignment starting off every class or something?

"Apollo will be forced death and madness to swallow." Isn't it Festus that has to swallow death and madness? It does say, The bronze fire-eater / Was forced death and madness to swallow.

"before the emperor moved in" So the Triumvirate took over relatively recently? Indianapolis hasn't been theirs for decades and decades?

"That cave literally drove our daughter mad." Oh no, the poor girl went crazy? Is that why she's still making crayon drawings? Will they be able to restore her sanity by the end of this book?

"might be a portent of what I would soon face." PORTENT (n.): a sign or warning that something, especially something momentous or calamitous, is likely to happen

"We used to have a dozen or so living here at any given time." There are supposed to be more people in the Waystation????? "Our griffins." That's where they get the griffins on the cover! "Heloise and Abelard." They've got namessssss!!!!!!!

"Agamethus helped her." "It was ordained" Brieanna helped Georgina sneak out without her parents' permission to go see a scary, dangerous, underwater cave Oracle? Who was it ordained by? You better not say "the emperor." Don't you turn traitor on us now, Brieanna.

"It can't be Com--" Commodus! He's from the Read Riordan quiz! "Maybe Heloise and Abelard are back?" Ma'am, I know your griffins are big, but they cannot shake the entire building and block out the sun.

"Josephine pulled out an old-fashioned machine gun" I believe this is the first character on the good side we've ever seen use a gun as their weapon of choice (excluding Sally Jackson, who had to use a gun due to extreme extenuating circumstances). "A reminder of my sordid past life." Do the Hunters sometimes use guns??? I doubt it. This is probably from her life before the Hunt, but that means she would've been in her late teens, earliest, when she joined. Tommy guns were invented in 1918 for trench warfare in WWI. Was she old enough to serve even if they allowed women to fight? "sordid past life" does not sound like she just got a gun from a relative who was serving.

Back long ago when they had decided to leave the hunters, Artemis asked if she could take them in, give them a chance to decide if leaving is what they wanted by having them live in a safe house.

It had been what they wanted, but the six months they spent in that house helped them decide what they wanted to spent the rest of their lives doing.
