Welcome to The Classic Literature Bracket!
Moderated by @sorrel-scribbles [she/her, minor] and inspired by @ultimatehistorical, @riordanversecharactertournament, @baldguy-fight, @spnepisodebracket, @classic-lit-couples-showdown, @ultimate-poll-tournament and so many more!
***VOTING HAS STARTED, SEE PINNED POST***
Important Info:
Submissions will be open one week (March 15-22), but will stay open if I have less than fifteen submissions or close early if I receive more than one hundred.
The current plan is a 32 entry bracket, but I will consider doing a 64 entry one if I get enough interest/submissions.
There will probably be a couple of preliminary rounds before the actual polls come out, because there are a couple of authors whose work I expect to see multiple submissions for.
Propaganda is welcome, but please wait to submit it at least until the first preliminaries come out (this can be done by using the ask box or making your own post and @ing me)
If you have questions feel free to submit them to the ask box!
Friendly competition is fine, but I will block you if you can’t be civil with one another!
Voting/Submitting Guidelines:
The goal here is to determine which is the most classic piece of literature. You can vote based on your personal favorite, what you think had the most cultural impact, what is the most popular or timely today etc.
I DO NOT want to see any moral complaints. Many of these authors/works were racist, sexist, etc. and I fully condemn that, but we can separate the art from the artist and still understand the importance of/enjoy the work despite its flaws. You’re free to not like/not vote for a book due to offensive material, but I don’t want to see tags/comments/asks saying “you shouldn’t have included x because it’s racist” or “nobody vote for y it’s misogynistic.” This isn’t “which classic lit book is the most morally correct”.
Submission Criteria:
The book must have been published between 1600-1970 CE
It must be written by a European (Russia/the Ural mountains to Ireland, not including Turkey/The Ottoman Empire), Canadian, or United States American*
The book must be fictional and considered a novel (no short stories, plays, poetry etc.)
You can’t submit a book already on the auto-inclusion list
You can’t submit for an author already on the auto-inclusion list as I’m only allowing one book per author
You can submit a series together (ex: Sherlock Holmes) or an individual book from the series (ex: A Study in Scarlet), just make sure to specify in the form
Up to five submissions per person, but you can only submit each book once
You have to make your submission through the google form (below). Submissions in comments, asks, etc. will not count (sorry, but I need to be able to keep track).
*on the Eurocentrism of this criteria: There is so much amazing Islamic, African, S./E. Asian, Pacific, and South American literature out there, but I feel it really merits its own bracket by someone who understands the material more and that it wouldn’t really get the fair chance it deserves in this bracket anyway as I expect it to be American and Brit Lit heavy as is and more people will come out to support those books so I might as well just limit the criteria off the bat.
Auto-Entries:
The Great Gatsby-F. Scott Fitzgerald
Pride and Prejudice-Jane Austen
The Metamorphosis-Franz Kafka
Wuthering Heights-Emily Bronte
Little Women-Louisa May Alcott
1984-George Orwell
Frankenstein-Mary Shelly
Les Miserables-Victor Hugo
Sherlock Holmes-Arthur Conan Doyle
Crime and Punishment-Fyodor Dostoyevsty

Now, I’m no Atelier Emily, but I did my best layman’s Google Fu and came up some potential meanings behind the flower selections in the Magical Destroyers OP. It seems the theme is poisonous plants, especially with ties to “death” in literature.
Anarchy - I want to say this is aconitum, given the petals’ deep hue and weird shapes, as well as the pronged leaves. Although, most of the pictures I’ve seen of aconitum are purple or indigo, rather than deep blue. Aconitum is so famously poisonous, it’s the poison of choice in literature, mythology, and history. It has a whole host of names like “monkshood” or “queen of poisons” or perhaps most well-known-- “wolf’s bane”.
Blue - This one will be obvious for those in the weeb sphere. Red spider lilies represent “last goodbyes”, as in “death”, and their distinctive appearance means you’ll be seeing it here and there especially in anime; a sort of visual Dies Irae. Like the other flowers shown here, spider lilies are poisonous.
Pink - There are a number of white compound flowers this could be, such as the more well-known Queen’s Lace, but if we understand the theme, this is almost assuredly poison hemlock. It’s hemlock. It’s poisonous. The classical Greek philosopher Socrates was executed by being forced to drink poison hemlock.
Slayer - This interesting because what she’s holding is clearly NOT a flower, it’s a branch of berries, which is like, post-flowering I guess. Regardless, she’s the odd one out in many other aspects, like the single teardrop tattoo, the heterochromia, the teardrop replaced by a cross in her civilian outfit, the starting as a villain, etc. It looks like the plant could be a Japanese Skimmia (Latinization of: ミヤマシキミ, 深山樒, miyama shikimi), a favored ornamental shrub for gardens and parks, due to its evergreen and fragrance. Female shrubs grow bright red berries, which grow in peace due to their poison.
Otaku Hero - You’d think this would just be daisies or something, but alas, this is where my Google Fu fails me. Daisies don’t have so few petals, it seems? Otaku Hero’s flowers very deliberately have five white petals and a yellow center, but the closest thing I can find is the wood sorrel, which is a bit too small for what’s portrayed in the image. Wood sorrel, or sourgrass, is considered a weed and is edible. The Oxalis genus is so common, it can be found around the world. Be it daisies or sourgrass, the theme for him seems to be weeds, as the flowers appear as if they were growing out of him.
Another thing to note: some of the girls might look to simply be holding these poisonous plants to pose with. Closer inspection shows that they all are actually holding them in their mouths, that is, if the plants are not outright growing out of them. Plants like the wolf’s bane are toxic even to touch, let alone ingest.

End Up Here Chapter 4
Chapter Summary: Emily's friends ambush her at work, looking for details about Dean.
Word Count: 2.9k
A/N: Once again picking up right where we left off last chapter. I had to take a break from all the 'get to know you' dialogue with Dean, so we're spending a little bit of time with the horses and the friend group instead! I really like how this one turned out, so I hope you guys like it too!
Sidenote: Enjoy the Friends gif, because I seriously could not find just a simple gif of a group of girls talking. I wish I was kidding when I say I spent a good hour looking for something similar to this but not from a famous TV show before giving in and just using it.

I pulled into the parking lot of Freedom Reins and grabbed the key to unlock the tack shed. I put out a pair of cross ties, grabbed Penny’s halter off its hook and then headed out to the pasture to catch her. The pasture she was in held five horses, each of them a different color. As the lone sorrel, she was easy to pick out even from a distance.
I was pretty confident I could get through my whole list today, but my plan was to knock out tasks in order of importance, just in case I didn’t have time for it all. Her being scared of the tree we planted in an attempt to give the arena a little more shade was my biggest and most immediate concern, so I decided to work with her first. Everything else still needed to be done, but I could function just fine for a few more days with things as they were if I ran out of time. I couldn’t, however, keep making Penny’s riders only use half of the arena.
“Hey, pretty girl,” I said to her when I got close. She didn’t even bother looking up from where she was contentedly pulling up mouthfuls of grass.
I put her halter on and led her to the arena. I stayed on the outside of the arena, walking her directly over to the tree. She needed to get up close and check it out so she could realize it wasn’t dangerous.
She perked up when the tree came into view and when we were within a few steps of it, she froze in her tracks, head up and ears alert. I gave her a few seconds to look at it and then coaxed her a couple more steps forward. She stepped side to side and snorted nervously. I talked to her in a soothing voice, but didn’t let her back away, waiting for her to stop reacting and to start thinking.
After a minute she started to cautiously stretch out her nose in an attempt to smell it without getting closer.
“That’s a good girl,” I told her. “It’s not going to hurt you. Come look at it.”
I gave her a little time to make the choice herself, but when it seemed like she wasn’t going to come any closer, I gave a little pull on the leadrope. She planted her feet, but otherwise didn’t fight me.
“Come on, girl,” I said and clicked to her a couple times.
She let out a big sigh and I knew I had her. She cautiously took the last couple steps forward, flinching – but not retreating – when I reached a hand out to pet her.
“Good girl!” I praised her. She sniffed at the tree and I watched her visibly relax when she realized what it was. I stayed there for a few minutes, petting on her and letting her graze around the tree to really solidify her understanding that it wasn’t scary.
I walked her back and forth directly in front of it a few times and then did a lap around the whole outside of the arena, making sure she’d still be ok with it after walking away and coming back. She didn’t react at all.
I took her into the arena next, to let her see it from a new angle. I kept her walking right on the fenceline. She paid attention when she saw the tree coming up, but I didn’t detect any signs of unease in her. We passed the tree with no reaction, so I finished my lap and then turned and walked her in the other direction. Still no reaction. Good.
I put her in the cross ties, figuring I might as well brush her and pick her feet while I had her up.
I gave her a treat and then took her back to her pasture, switching her halter out for Domino’s and grabbing him next. As his name suggested, he was a black and white paint horse. We didn’t know for sure, but we suspected him of being a draft cross. He wasn’t overly tall, but he was stocky.
“Alright big guy, let’s see what’s going on here,” I said to him once I had him up in the cross ties and had finished grooming him.
I grabbed his saddle out of the tack shed and set it on him. I was far from an expert in saddle fitting, but I knew enough to get by. I thought it still fit him nicely, but he had put on a little weight, so switching out his thick saddle pad for a thin blanket would probably make a difference. I took the saddle off, grabbed a blanket from the shed, and then saddled him up all the way, watching closely for any signs of discomfort. He seemed perfectly fine.
Well then, either switching blankets was all that was needed, or I’d imagined him being sore in the first place – a possibility when I had so much going on. All he’d really done was turn his nose in my direction and stomp his foot. It’s possible it had even just been him being annoyed by a fly, but at the time class was starting and I didn’t have time to investigate further. Either way, it was definitely a necessary change.
I put him away and then checked the time. Almost 11:30. I figured I could work on desensitizing Finn for a while. He’d been around for eight months now, so it was long past time for him to be worked with on wheelchairs. The only reason I’d put it off so long is because we had so few riders that used them, it was easy enough to choose any of our other 15 horses for the job. If he was going to be at this center though, it’s really something he should learn.
I spent about 45 minutes working with him and was happy with the progress I’d made. He didn’t have any problems walking next to the moving wheelchair or having it be moved all around him. I still needed to work with him on riders getting on from the wheelchair, but I needed more people around to help me with that and he’d done enough for the day anyway. It was best to stop on a good note, give him a break, and come back to it another day.
I unlocked the office and went inside for lunch. I heated up one of the frozen dinners that I kept here for days like this and sat down at my desk. I decided to work on the rider files from yesterday while I ate. Every rider’s file had to be updated after every class. Notes had to be made on what we worked on that day, how they did, any improvements they made or issues they had.
Sometimes our riders had difficulty comprehending what we were asking of them or lacked the physical ability to do things a certain way. Keeping a record of what works for them and what doesn’t was also important.
I was still eating and working on these when the door opened and three of my companions from last night walked in. I looked up into the smug, expectant faces of Rose, Lauren, and Natalie.
“What’s up?” I asked. I had no idea what this could possibly be about. I hadn’t expected them to be here today.
“Oh, you know. Just thought we’d come see how you’re doing,” Natalie said in an innocent tone.
“Uh huh,” I said flatly. “Out with it. What are you really doing here?”
“What? We can’t just stop by and see if you need help with anything? You did have quite the list last night,” Lauren said.
They were all willing to help me out with things if I asked, but they wouldn’t just volunteer their help. It was my job after all, not theirs. And I hadn’t asked.
“Nope. Try again.”
“How was your walk home last night?” Rose asked.
Okay. Now I saw where this was going. Obviously they’d seen me leave with Dean. But if she was going to hint around it instead of outright asking what she really wanted to know, then I wasn’t going to give her what she wanted.
“It was fine. It was really nice out. Made it to your place just fine.”
“Yeah. And I bet the rest of your night was better than fine,” Natalie prodded with a proud gleam in her eye. Rose and Lauren snickered.
“I got home and I went to sleep. Nothing exciting,” I told her truthfully, although they clearly didn’t believe me.
“Oh please! Stop trying to deny it. We all saw you leave with tall, dark and handsome. And Jackie saw you with him this morning at Ricky’s,” Rose informed me.
Well that’s just great. Jackie was our program director, and I loved her dearly – I loved all the girls I worked with – but she could be such a gossip.
“Ok, well first of all, Jackie needs to stop spreading my personal business around to everyone on staff. Second, just because she saw me with a guy, that doesn’t mean it was the guy from the bar. And I’m not denying that I left with him. But he walked me to my car and that was the end of it.”
“Then why were you out with him this morning?” Lauren asked, clearly thinking she’d proved her point.
“Once again, you don’t have any reason to think it was him,” I argued.
“But I don’t actually hear you denying it,” Rose pointed out. “So it was him, wasn’t it?”
I sighed and pushed my food out of the way. I’d probably have to reheat it at this point.
“Yeah, it was him. So what?”
“So?” Lauren asked incredulously. “So, tell us everything! How was he?”
I was getting very frustrated with this line of questioning. Couldn’t they just believe me when I said I didn’t sleep with the guy? They knew that wasn’t really my style anyway, so why were they so set on that being the official story?
“If you mean how was he in bed, then I don’t know. He walked me to my car because he said he didn’t like the idea of me walking alone. He asked me to meet him for breakfast this morning, and then I went home. Alone. If you mean how was he as a conversational partner, then he was great. Good listener, but doesn’t just sit there and make you carry the conversation either.”
“You really didn’t sleep with him?” Nat asked.
“No! That’s what I’m trying to tell you! You know I don’t do one night stands. What makes you think this was any different?”
“I don’t know. We just figured since you left with him…” Nat trailed off.
“And let’s be real, he’s insanely good looking. If there was ever a guy to make an exception for, it would be him,” Lauren added.
“Ok. So, let me ask you this,” Rose said. “If you didn’t hook up with him, then what exactly are you expecting out of this?”
This was her serious voice. Her ‘let’s be reasonable and talk about it’ voice. I don’t know why she was going into mom friend mode.
“I’m not expecting anything. Maybe hoping,” I admitted.
“Emily, listen. Guys like that… they don’t settle for girls like you,” Rose said in a sympathetic voice.
“Girls like me? What’s that mean? That he’s out of my league?” I was immediately defensive and hurt that my longtime friend would say something so mean. Not that it wasn’t true. But wasn’t this the part where my friends were supposed to build me up? To tell me it was his loss if he wasn’t interested?
“Honestly? Yes.” Seeing my hurt expression, she hurried to continue. “But he’s out of all of our leagues. Guys like that are out of the league of everyone. Except supermodels. I’m just trying to be realistic here.”
“So it’s plausible for him to want to sleep with me, but not anything else?”
“You know this is supposed to be an insult to him, not you, right?” Nat asked. “We’re not saying you’re not beautiful and a really great person. But have you ever known a guy that looks as good as him to be interested in anything more than sex? They know how they look. They know they can have any girl they want. And they take advantage of that. Why settle down when you can be with a different girl every night?”
I was still feeling extremely hurt, but at least I could see where they were coming from now. I’d get over it when I had space and time to calm down. And I couldn’t deny the petty smugness I felt at being able to contradict all the expectations they apparently had of Dean.
“Thanks for the concern,” I told them. “But it’s really unnecessary. Dean’s a great guy. He’s not at all like what you’re saying.”
“Oh, it’s Dean, is it?” Rose smirked and wiggled her eyebrows. I smiled a little at her teasing, happy to move on from the tense moment.
“It’s not that we don’t want to believe you. We just don’t want you to get your hopes up thinking you’ve met this great guy and then it turns out he was just using you. You know we can’t stand seeing you hurt,” Lauren said.
“And I appreciate you looking out for me. But this isn’t him playing me. Did you not notice him turn down like four different women last night?” I asked. They all shook their heads. “Well he did. And he never once made any sort of move on me. He was a perfect gentleman. Does that sound like something he would do if he had ulterior motives? I mean, why even bother? Like I said, he had options. He didn’t have to hang around the one girl in the bar who wasn’t going to sleep with him.”
“I guess so,” Nat said, not sounding entirely convinced but wanting to trust me.
“Well if he is as great as you say, you’d better lock him down fast. Before he gets to know you and runs away screaming,” Rose smirked.
“Shut up,” I laughed, throwing my pen at her.
“I’m just saying,” she continued, laughing with me. She bent down to pick up my pen and handed it back to me. “A guy who looks like that and who is apparently a great guy? It’s a wonder he’s still single.”
“Yeah… He said he moves around a lot. That could have something to do with it,” I told them.
“Well tell us all about him!” Natalie encouraged. “I want to know what’s so great about him! And I want to be able to like him as much as you do.”
Rose snorted.
“I don’t think Emily wants you liking him as much as she does,” she said. I smirked.
“No, not really. Don’t get me wrong. I want you guys to like him. But if it comes down to it, I will absolutely fight you for him,” I said in the most serious tone I could manage. It only took a few seconds for me to break and for all of us to burst into laughter.
Once we’d all calmed down, Lauren picked the conversation back up.
“Seriously though, it sounds like you really like this guy. Normally you wouldn’t even think about making a joke like that. Especially for a guy you just met. So there must be some truth to it.”
I smiled and thought back on the couple hours I’d spent with Dean. I was already extremely interested in the man. And the thought of him deciding he didn’t like me after all and moving on to someone else made my stomach twist.
“I like him a lot,” I said to them.
“Ooh!” The three of them cheered together in a drawn out way, like we were middle school girls talking about crushes at a slumber party.
“You really need to tell us everything, then!” Nat said again.
We talked for a while. They grilled me for all the details on Dean and I asked them how the rest of their night went. Once they left, I took my now cold food back to the microwave. I finished eating and doing all the files, then headed back outside to clean the automatic waterers. We had three of them. One by one, I shut them off, drained the water, and scrubbed them clean.
I had more of the day left than I anticipated when I finished, so I decided to spend some time riding a couple horses. It never hurt to put an experienced rider on them for a refresher. I rode them through our trail pattern a couple of times before heading back to the outside edge of the arena. We worked on starts and stops and staying on the rail instead of straying towards the inside and cutting corners the way a lot of the horses were liable to do if no one corrected them.
Once I was done riding, I put away the cross ties, locked up the tack room, and then got the hose out to water down the arena. We usually relied on rain to keep the dust in check, but it had been a while since we’d had any so I needed to take care of it manually.
Once I’d covered the whole arena in a light layer of water – I didn’t want to get it too wet or we’d be riding in mud on Monday – I headed home to snuggle with Ziggy and enjoy the rest of my weekend.

THE LITTLE MERMAID (2023)

Screenplay by  David Magee.
Directed by Rob Marshall.
Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. 135 minutes. Rated PG.
We are not going to debate whether or not there is any reason for Disney to film live action versions of pretty much every one of their classic animated films other than just as a way to make money.
That is just a given. Disney is raiding their own vaults to make longer, live-action versions of most of their classics. There have been over 20 in the last few decades. In fact, Peter Pan and Wendy came out mere weeks before this film. There are also two more planned for next year (Snow White and a Lion King sequel) and ten more in varying levels of development.
And, honestly, while most of these reboots are not as good as the films that inspired them, many of them have been pretty entertaining.
The good news is that The Little Mermaid is one of the better ones – as usual not as good as the animated version but getting decently close.
The original The Little Mermaid was the film that pretty much jump started the last classic wave of Disney animation, after about a two-decade dry spell of forgettable likes of The Rescuers, The Fox and the Hound, Pete’s Dragon, The Black Cauldron and Oliver & Company.
The Little Mermaid was the first film to include the music of Alan Mencken and Howard Ashman, who also did the music for the next two Disney Classics – Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. (Ashman died of AIDS way too young while working on Aladdin.) Mermaid ended up including three tunes that became Disney standards (“Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl.”)
It was also the one which returned the films coming out of the Disney Inking and Painting building to critical success. It also did fairly well as far as box office, but it wasn’t until Beauty and the Beast that the Disney films started becoming smash hits again. Following The Little Mermaid was an entire slate of classics: Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995) and the debut of PIXAR computer animation with Toy Story (1995).
I’m not going to lie, I’m not as familiar with The Little Mermaid as I am with the likes of Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. And, perhaps, that is why this film feels so close in quality to the original to me, because I am not as invested in the source as I was for those films. (The live action versions of Beast and Aladdin, while both great fun, were a bit of a disappointment compared to the real deal.)
However, the effects in The Little Mermaid are often stunning, the storyline hews fairly closely to the original (as far as I can remember), the music is wonderful (although “Kiss the Girl” may have been done a little too close to the vest) and the young, mostly unknown cast is impressive – particularly Halle Bailey as mermaid Ariel. Plus, Melissa McCarthy has loads of fun as the over-the-top, tentacled villainess Ursula.
What can I say? I really dug this new version of The Little Mermaid. In a world where IP is king, it's got gadgets and gizmos aplenty. It's got whosits and whatsits galore. You want thingamabobs? It’s got twenty.
Who could ask for more?

WALT EVENT ; FRIDAY THE 13TH
the connotation that comes with friday the 13th is always one that comes with caution and fear. Magic is something that lives within the city of Elias. The good and bad don’t exactly live in harmony, especially as of late, but on this day the bad has seemed to outweigh the peace. the atmosphere felt different when everyone woke up today. something was off, they just didn’t know what. most brushed it off not feeding into the day but others, others questioned.
and boy were they right to.
it seemed as though elias had been cursed. well, cursed more so than it already was. the morning of friday the 13th everyone woke up with some sort of curse attached to them. They were right when they said friday the 13th was unlucky. For the next few days the citizens of elias will have to figure out how to either live with what they were given or find a way to break it.
will they find themselves lucky or unlucky ?

Dear 16  year old me
Hi. You’ve just watched dodie’s 25 year old response to her video of 20 year old her talking to 25 year old her. You know you wrote a letter to yourself when you watched the original video, but you can’t find it, so fuck it.
Fuck, so much will happen between now and 21. You will have your heart broken more than once, in different ways, and it will fucking hurt every time, but you’ll be stronger each time too. You’ll come to be grateful for every single experience. You aren’t as petty now.
You use your stubbornness as fuel in the same way, but you know when it helps and when it hurts. Remember the big massive heartbreak you felt a year ago? Those friends still love you and will love you again. But you’ll feel like that again. You’re fucking strong though, You’ll get through it and you’ll be so goddamn proud.
If I’m remembering right, you’ve just celebrated a year with your boyfriend, the curtain is about to go up on your third show of your academic year, and you’re about to do your GCSEs. You’ll spend a lot of time with Ella pretending to revise Spanish. Cherish that time, it will be more important than you realise. Your run of the Crucible will be your last time acting for a while, and you’ll give some of the best performances of your life. You’ll make friends there that won’t ever hurt you and will be way more accepting than you expected. You’ll get drunk for the first time at your afterparty and it will take maybe 2 ciders till you feel it. You’ll love it. The adults will find it hilarious how quickly you kids get drunk and you will be so full of love. John, Emily, Peter and Joy will all move away soon. That’s gonna hurt. But it will be okay. You’re still in touch with them all, to varying degrees.
Your GCSEs don’t go as well as you want them to. That’s okay. It feels like a fucking disaster when it happens, but fuck knows you’ve earned things far more important than grades. You’ll have got through the worst of your panic attacks by now. They don’t go away completely, but by 21 they happen maybe 4 times a year rather than four times a day. You’ll fucking panic in a couple of weeks when you realise that you’ve made some terrible A-Level choices, but it’ll be alright, you’ll get to do French and get to go to Nantes two more times. Year 12 is a big and hard year in a lot of ways. You make friends, you lose friends. It changes your life and I don’t think you’ll ever find anyone who loves as hard as you and Ella do. You don’t really talk anymore, but you can still text her and know for certain she’s got your back. You can be proud of both of you. You’ll stage manage your first show next year, with Peter directing, and rehearsals on your birthday like always. You will be so proud and you’ll realise how suited you are to that role. You lose Smudge this year, and Daisy. I’m sorry. Poppy and Lottie will come along and they will be friendly and terrified and you will end up with a fence almost your damn height crisscrossing the living room. Daddy will move house and that house will become a home.
Year 13 might be the most life-changing year of your life to be honest. You finally, finally come out to people. You choose a name. You go on propranolol, end up with shitty side effects, and end up on Sertraline instead (it takes two more tries til you find something that works, but more on that later.) Your family all adjust to your new name and pronouns with relatively few slip ups. Your mum says she likes your name. Your dad says he’s proud of you. Your eldest sister tells you you’re brave. Your middle sister says she’s happy you can be yourself. Your youngest sister says she loves you no matter what. You apply to Cambridge, and Peter will even trust you to direct your first show in his stead in Year 13. You will be so so proud of your whole cast and crew. You will see how much you can do. You end up with a Cambridge interview the same day as opening night. It’s terrifying and a blur, and you’re so happy to be in the theatre. You cry when you realise Peter flew in from France to see the show. You cry again when the lifts go without a hitch and Regan pulls hers off flawlessly. You’re openly sobbing when they take their bows, on your feet clapping.
Christ this year only gets harder. You got that Cambridge offer and an E in your Classics mock (yikes). At the start of April you’ll get broken up with and you will feel like you’ll never be whole again. Let it hurt. You only get your first love once. Yours lasted three years and it was wonderful and sweet and god losing it hurts so bad. You will be so angry with him. You will undervalue yourself. In time, you’ll realise he made the right call. Til then, you’ll spent two weeks feeling that heartbreak and not knowing what to do. Ning will take you to London to distract you. You’ll realise how much she loves you. Ella will see you heartbroken and curse his name and hold you tight until your sobs subside.
You’ll use your anger and sadness and work harder than you’ve ever worked. You’ll come out to so many people, and put so much effort into becoming yourself. It will be so fucking worth it. You meet Alex and Dan for the first time. You’ll meet Lorcan and he’ll join you at your first prides. You’ll love yourself. You get into Cambridge. You get a new bunny called Teddy and he loves you so much and your heart breaks at the idea of leaving him.
You start your first year and fall in love again. Be careful. That relationship will run its course. Make sure you notice when it does. You make friends, you start fresh as you. Few people slip up on your name and pronouns, and when they do it throws you. You go to your first trans day of remembrance service. There are so many names. You grieve as a community. You see Hamilton this year. It’s incredible. You have two more med mishaps, a suicide attempt, and you fail half your exams. It fucking hurts. You survive. It gets better.
The next year rolls around, and its better, and then its worse. You fall in love again, with the wrong person. You wish it was the right person. He means so much to you. Be patient. You’ll realise that being alone is healthier than anything you’re imagining for yourself. You take a break from uni in this time. You finally get your first GIC appointment. You change your name. Your life is moving forward. You have a German passport. You have a male driving license. You have a lot to learn.
You break two people’s hearts and someone else breaks yours. It hurts a lot. You share your heartbreak. You start hormones. You make friends. You love as hard as ever. You finally, finally, begin to settle mental health wise. It’s hard. Then life comes at you like a brick. The start of 2020 sucks more than you can imagine. You spend the new year on a mattress in Grandma’s living room. You’re grateful she’s recovering. Grandpa dies. Poppy dies. You don’t know what to do. You hold yourself together because you have to. Because your whole family is doing the same. You go back hom and you fall apart. You get through the term. It hurts. It gets better. You look forward to staying over the holiday, spending time with friends and spending time with yourself.
Then a global fucking pandemic hits. No, I’m not joking. You pack in a panic and you go home, except you don’t go to Balmoral Road. Teddy is at grandma’s and so is mama and it feels so horrible and heartbreaking but you start dealing with it. You move to Sorrel Cottage. You are grateful for the sun and your family and skype and pokemon and animal crossing and a puppy and literature and being alive.
You begin to have noticeable facial hair. Your voice has dropped. I don’t know what comes next. Now, more than ever, the future is uncertain. But I know you can do it. I know 26 year old you will be proud. Good luck, past me, you’ll do just fine.
