Okay, so what I was saying in my long Gabriel analysis rings true. (Ha ha...rings....) He changed to be accepted by Emilie's parents.

Deep down, Gabriel probably relates to Marinette. In the story Feligami tell...Marinette could easily be the poor tailor, while Adrien is the heir to the empire, ready to throw it all away for her.

At some point, Gabriel got twisted and sold out his values. It was probably a gradual process, which explains why Emilie initially fell in love with him and then stuck with him despite her unhappiness with him later.

In one of her videos for Nathalie, she said Gabriel got stuck on things. He was good enough for her but not for himself.

When he looks at Marinette, he sees a little of what he used to be. When he gives her that speech about being naive in the fashion world...he's talking about himself, once upon a time. I think he once had a dream like hers, and he let it go, focusing instead on the wealth and status he needed to be good enough for his in-laws.

Now, he envies Marinette, even if he's unaware of it. That's the only reason a grown man would be fixated on her in that way. He's treating her the way Emilie's parents treated him. He has to break her and get her out of his son's life because if he doesn't - if she achieves her dreams of marrying Adrien and becoming a designer without selling out her principles - it means he could have done this too. It will force him to reflect and take accountability for his bad decisions...and he just can't cope with that.

Similarly, when he hurls abuse at Cat Noir about what an ill-mannered child he is, and when he goes to such lengths to control Adrien...I really think he's seeing a reflection of his younger self there too.

Underneath the pancakes and bad dancing and total insanity, the man is nothing but a writhing heap of regrets and won't see that he had so many chances to do things another way.

okay, but let's bring back the cabbage patch doll babies from earlier this season for a sec. they weren't "real" children either, but the pure love chat noir and ladybug had for them compared to the terrible shit kagami, felix, and adrien's parent have done to them? like when the effect of the wish ended, chat was feral because of how much he loved their kids, even though they had never existed beyond their dreams.

And here? here we have flesh and bone kids who are treated like crap for absolutely no reason at all, other than the fact they want to live their own lives.

tldr: the parent's behavior has nothing to do with the "humanity" or realness of the child and everything to do with the attitude of the parent. the kids being sentis changes nothing

S1 The Bubbler: The Agreste Parents Suck and Always Did

[The Agreste Parents Suck and Always Did] is the first of a repeat segment where I list the episode’s evidence that Gabriel and/or Emilie were bad parents to Adrien, in the ‘present’ of this episode as well as in the show’s past. Eventually, I will make a masterpost combining all of these segments into one large rapsheet, not to convince anyone of my thesis (by now, no one needs convincing), but to put all the evidence in one place.

1) Adrien and Gabriel never talk with each other this episode. The singular time they are in the same room, when Adrien addresses his father, Gabriel immediately turns around and leaves without saying a word to Adrien.

2) Gabriel not only doesn’t get Adrien a birthday gift himself, but fails to remember to order Nathalie to buy one for him (he claims he didn't forget to order Nathalie, but no one is convinced). Also, Adrien reveals that Garbiel has “given me the same lame pen for three years in a row.”. This implicates Emilie as well, who was alive at the time and could have intervened.

3) Gabriel forbids Adrien from having a birthday party. Adrien says that the party Bubbler makes for him is his “first one”. It is unclear if this is first birthday party or his first party in general. Either is bad, but the second is worse. Emilie is only implicated if he has never had any party before.

Since people are sharing Emilie headcanons, here's the source for one you may have noticed in my fics:

I've seen theories about Gabriel being a pun lover, but based on the above and a few other little clues, my theory has always been that Emilie was the one who loved wordplay in all its various forms. In my world, she's the reason Adrien loves puns and why he's so good at them. You don't get that good unless you've practiced with a solid verbal-sparing partner.

Both Gabriel and Adrien are paying homage to her throughout the series. Gabriel with akuma names, Adrien by having fun and using puns to distract said akumas.
