not my own ideas at all, i got it from quelaag and her elden ring lore videos but i really really love how often miyazaki takes ideas and tropes from literature and inverts them.
the most common one is bloodbornes ability to both pay respects to hp lovecrafts ideas while also criticizing hp bigotry and xenophobia
in elden ring its not so serious (that im aware of), but still very cool and clever imo. (not accounting for literally any and all of carl jungs psychological theories, this is just for his works in terms of literary analysis and writing)
one of the jungian archetypes is "the beast" which is supposed to represent the choatic and violent part of someone. its angry and wild. but in elden ring, literally every beastman we see, is anything but that. the beastmen in elden ring are devoted, have strong wills and morals, and almost innocent in a way. and its actually the "humans" who end up using them as tools or even abusing or betraying them
blaidd is devotetd to ranni, hes a charismatic and lighthearted beastman whose quick to trust you and happy work alongside you. when the two fingers orders him to kill ranni, his closest friend and master, he is so overcome with grief and defies the two fingers oppressive will so much that it drives him mad and he loses himself. the two fingers are exactly "human" so my comment at the end of the prev paragraph falls apart...
serosh is godfreys close friend, its also serosh who holds back godfreys bloodlust. which is the most on the nose example of how beasts differ from others. serosh is also the one who plays the role as king for godfreys kingdom when he goes out to war. godfrey has a constant desire for bloodlust and violence and its serosh who holds him back and keeps in calm. when godfrey sees that he cant beat the tarnished with serosh holding him back, he resorts to killing serosh
and last is maliketh. everytime we speak with maliketh hes like. ever devoted to marika. you can tell that even in her absence, hes completely loyal to her and would die for her. and we learn through Item Lore later that she actually just used him as a pawn for her own goal and betrayed him, she had him seal the rune of death in himself and then shattered the elden ring. when you speak to him, hes hurt and confused still as to why she would do something like that, despite this, he still fights for her name...
much longer than i wanted and im sure theres technicalities throughout that i missed but this is blorbo posting not an argument essay so take it with a grain of salt

i don’t hyperfixate on things unless it’s finals. then like clockwork i am completely transfixed by Something and that is all i think about and completely devour for a solid three weeks to the detriment of literally everything else. i can’t stop this and lowkey it kinda sucks but also it’s very very funny to see how predictable it is

As a fellow dark souls 2 enjoyer, how do you like that it seems the Dragonbone fist is (FINALLY) getting a redo/Sucessor in the DLC?
I can finally experience this good weapon in a better, more fast paced combat system! I'm really excited.
Elden Ring is truly Dark Souls 2 II

got voice claim vids on the mind and if youre like me, you dont really watch movies or tv shows or maybe you just cant remember That One Guy with The One Voice so heres some good places to hear some voice acting happening
Fire Emblem from awakening to three houses has some voice acting in it and as a franchise, a shit ton of fucking characters. you can find support conversation videos for some voice clips. three houses is fully voiced. bonus of this franchise is voiced critical hit lines, incase ur lil guy is feral or a fighter. videos of those lines exist too.
Dragon Age has a bunch of great voices and theres companion banter videos on youtube. origins, II and inquisition all have fully voiced companions but II and Inquis have voiced MCs as well. hawke from II has three versions (blue, red, and purple) blue being the good kind lines, red being aggressive and violent, and purple being the Little Bastard Sarcastic lines. the inquisitor unfortunately doesnt have this same system, but there are multiple races in Inquistion with different VAs. Elven, Dwarven, Human or Qunari.
Elden Ring has some good voice actors and im sure theres gameplay videos of specific characters. i was able to find a video of Blaidd's quests to hear his voice, there might be more videos like that. Atleast- You can use listed VAs for elden ring as a starting point for more of their work or youtube video searching.
i think Genshin Impact has a decent VA library. Though i know the least about this one.
Critical Role has highlight videos you can watch and you can skim episodes to find a PC voice or NPC voice you might like. All players are professional voice actors and they seem to try and pick a new type of voice for each campaign they run. There's currently three campaigns available (2 completed, 3rd ongoing)
and if youre like me and listen to an ungodly amount of music you can always pick singers! find your favorite songs and flip through some interviews, you might like what you find! Or follow trails by finding a character you like and seeing what else the voice actor / actor has done. 👍

Good PS5 games?
I'm at a bit of an impasse, since I'm holding myself back from FF7 Remake and Rebirth until I've beaten the original, and I don't want to be giving money to Helldivers II until this whole region-locking thing gets sorted out. I already have Elden Ring(and it turns out it isn't for me) and Animal Well(which is absolutely for me, but I got it on Switch).

writing patterns
Rules: List the first line of your last ten (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern.
Tagged: Not exactly, but @faejilly I'm doing this because of you and your encouragement for all of us to "PLEASE PLEASE DO IT AND BLAME ME" lol
A vampire spawn is a solitary creature. (Little Chapters, BG3, Astarion/Tav)
The knife feels like part of you. (The Ascent, BG3, Astarion/Tav)
Galen Trevelyan can't speak Tevene. (Bits and Pieces, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dorian/Trevelyan)
Carver hated the work — always slinking in the shadows, moving smuggled goods through a network of dubious contacts, never certain who might opt for shortchange or betrayal — but at least Athenril gave straightforward instructions. (no sunshine, Dragon Age II, Carver Hawke and Marian Hawke)
The Grand Lift of Dectus shakes the earth as its ancient gears unlock and begin to move. (Grace and monsters, Elden Ring)
With his tunic half-open, Trevelyan was attempting to tie his laces and button his buttons as he raced downstairs. (Dread, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dorian/Trevelyan)
Dorian reached into his pocket and found, to his great relief, that the key was still there — of course it was! — tucked safely alongside an unopened letter. (The Legacy, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dorian/Trevelyan)
Linnea pushed the tavern door open, hoping for a breath of fresh air. (Linnea, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dorian/Trevelyan)
On the night when everything shattered, Halward Pavus had been thinking of his son. (The Portrait, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dorian/Trevelyan)
The others say that, in time, you will lose. (Lord of Embers, Elden Ring)
Patterns I see are some short declarative openings, some in media res, and my love of descriptive sentences featuring an em dash. A pretty even mix of present tense and past tense. A recent trend of second person narration.

2022 in Gaming
The Last of Us: Part I - Naughty Dog / Sony Horizon: Forbidden West - Guerilla Games / Sony Elden Ring - FromSoftware / Bandai Namco Ent. Dying Light 2: Stay Human - Techland The Quarry - Supermassive Games / 2K As Dusk Falls - Interior Night / Xbox Game Studios Stray - BlueTwelve Studio / Annapurna Games God of War: Ragnarok - Santa Monica Studio / Sony Crisis Core: Reunion - Square Enix A Plague Tale: Requiem - Asobo Studio / Focus Ent.
When I think of the games that have come and gone this year (and still need to come, in some cases), few words come to mind, words that also describe their worlds and those who live within them.
Protective. Purposeful. Persistent.
Humans that love, gods that hate. Animals, children, soldiers, survivors. Fathers, daughters, sons, brothers, sisters. Knights and beasts, queens and robots. Stories of us and of them, bringing us together in an uncertain world, journeying through bitterness, through betrayal, through dark and light, to us. To us.
It's always interesting, seeing how each year's games tend to reflect the world we live in ourselves; 2020 brought to us The Last of Us: Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy VII Remake, among others. Stories of revenge and redemption, tearing each other apart while we were apart from each other in a ruthless and unknown pandemic. The following year, some of the games brought to us were Psychonauts 2, Resident Evil: Village, and It Takes Two; these gave us stories of teamwork, compassion, and care, whether you were saving your own daughter or journeying through the mental illness-ridden brains of your mentors, those games brought us back together and helped teach us a few things about ourselves.
This year was almost like a fire that 2021 had sparked to life. We were ready to get back to grand adventures and epic fights across all mediums, big or small, and we embraced the lovely little indie games along the way. And while the path ahead surely is uncertain and frightening, at least we have some pretty good storytellers to comfort us when we need it the most.
To everyone who worked to bring us these stories this year, and every year, whether an assistant, director, actor, writer, tester, programmer, animator, or anywhere in between, thank you.

im stuck thinking about bumpo's house of tricks bosses what bosses would you consider the bumpo for each game? and does anor londo as a whole count for a bumpo as well with the gwynevere part as a way to open the gwyndolin fight
okay so. i want to take a holistic view of what can be considered a palace of tricks in this post. however, with that in mind, i would not say that merely being a hidden or convoluted-to-reach boss qualifies as a Trick in and of itself. we need to maintain a high standard of bullshit here or things will get out of hand. anyway here's my comprehensive bumpo overview
DEMON'S SOULS
Fool's Idol. a fucking classic to start us off. not only does she have a bunch of clones cluttering up the arena. not only does she cover the floor in immobilising traps. NOT ONLY does she teleport. but she has an easily missable npc hanging out on a balcony above her arena who you have to locate and kill beforehand or he'll revive her repeatedly upon death. textbook shit. no notes
DARK SOULS
Pinwheel. the saddest, wettest, most pathetic of all bumpos, and this is a category that includes micolash. he's got the classic arsenal - the body doubles, the teleportation, the projectile attacks - and it just doesn't matter. he's fucked no matter what he does. sorry, buddy.
Dark Sun Gwyndolin. now, i know i made it sound like i wasn't going to include gwyndolin, but they're not here for the "giant big booby hologram of my useless sister" thing. they're here for teleporting indefinitely down an infinite hallway, like a Bitch.
Bed of Chaos. come on man
BLOODBORNE
Witches of Hemwick. a lot of people on that dog ass 10k note post that i wrote in 3 seconds and isnt even about a tweet i made are telling me the witches of hemwick aren't really that Bumpo. they're telling me they're not that big a deal. listen. Liten it's not just that this boss is invisible. it's not just that it summons a bunch of guys, multiclassing into "the gang is back together and they hate you ". it's not just the immobilising projectile attack. it's not just the respawning body doubles. it's the fake health bar. witches of hemwick is a boss fight with a fake health bar, and they're in my notes telling me that isn't double strength top ranking Clown Bullshit. Fuck Off
Micolash, Host of the Nightmare. a little undercooked as a bumpo on the individual level. but my god. what a palace of tricks he has
DARK SOULS II
i'm actually struggling to come up with a bumpo for this game. mytha, maybe? i don't know, i feel like my standards for tricks are a bit higher than just having a swamp in your arena. you need a little more panache than that, or at least need to be annoying in a less straightforward way. open to feedback of course but i just don't think anybody in dark souls 2 is the right kind of infuriating for this
DARK SOULS III
Crystal Sages. a comparatively restrained but still respectable bumpo. your common-or-garden fool. your workhorse shithead
Ancient Wyvern. as if by contrast, a most unconventional bumpo indeed! not only is the focus almost entirely on the palace of tricks, as with micolash, the ancient wyvern is also the only bumpo thus far who would not immediately die if struck by a moped
SEKIRO
Folding Screen Monkeys. a supremely Bumpo fight that also bears the unique honour of actually being, like, a good boss. i really like bosses in stealth-action games that test the player on their mastery of the stealth system rather than being action segments, and the folding screen monkeys are a great example of this! (my other favourite instances of the approach are izban from deadbolt and the boss from mgs3.) also they are part of sekiro's broader Monkey Subtheme, which rules
ELDEN RING
Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.

You've probably seen this image. I've seen it many times. I have mixed feelings about it.
It's a funny image, and represents a good cause. It's usually posted by people who want to support fairer working conditions for game developers, and want to show support for smaller titles.
It's usually posted in contrast to something like Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs: Legion, The Last of Us: Part II, or God of War: Ragnarok.
There's a part of me that cringes every time I see it, though. I imagine there may be other game developers who feel similarly.
I think the reflexive cringe comes from the phrase "shorter games with worse graphics." People being paid more to work less sounds great, tbh, and barring any sort of production pipeline blocking, I think most devs would be into that.
These are the thoughts that fly through my mind when I hear people say "I want shorter games with worse graphics."
Short compared to what?
Shorter than Elden Ring? Shorter than Hollow Knight? Short like Venba? Short like Celeste? How short could a AAA game be before, even despite posting this phrase, you'd find it unsatisfying or incomplete? How short could an indie game be before you don't consider it a "real game"? Games can be anything from Ulysses to a haiku, but it rarely seems like people are talking about the haiku style of games.
What does "worse graphics" mean?
I just can't imagine a world where "worse graphics" could possibly correlate to Hi-Fi Rush, Undertale, Hollow Knight, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Celeste, Mario Odyssey, Wind Waker, A Short Hike, or Hades. Even though those are the types of games that I often see people use this meme in support of. Those games have incredible art that talented artists worked really really hard on. It feels like a bit of a sting to associate those beautiful games with the term "worse graphics." That phrasing, sadly, implies that photorealism is the bar by which all other games are compared.
Forever Games
Where do replayable games, like roguelikes, tycoons, crafting games, and farming sims land on the realm of "shorter games"? They're not inherently any shorter than a big AAA game, and they're designed to be replayable and to suck your time in. That can be great, but it also might be a treadmill that is not inherently any more honorable than a game trying to tell a linear story.
Are you really "not kidding"?
This meme has a very confident, smug energy and I think that tone invites this question: Do you REALLY want shorter games with worse graphics? I know this is going to depend on the individual lives of each human being who's ever reposted this meme, and it can never be truly answered, but it really begs the question of whether or not people REALLY DO WANT "shorter games with worse graphics." Because let me tell ya, there's a lot of shorter games with worse graphics right now and they ain't selling very well. Check the Steam reviews. Ask devs how many copies they sell on itch. There are many devs out there who make shorter games with worse graphics and no matter how many times people post this phrase, people don't seem to flock over to support those projects. And that sinking feeling of "oh, these folks don't mean the games that my friends and I post regularly on itch, they mean Hi-Fi Rush and Wind Waker" is a little bit demotivating, given the gusto with which this meme is posted. There are people whose whole careers hinge on the hope that there's an audience out there that wants "shorter games with worse graphics" and there doesn't seem to be an actual sea change that's helping those projects out. There is a treasure trove of games out on itch that you can play in between hyped releases, but most people's playing habits don't seem to shift.
Lastly...
...there are thousands of devs out there who work hard, collaborating with other devs and artists, to make their games the best they can be. Devs work hard to bring their artistic vision to God of War: Ragnarok or to Bomb Rush Cyberfunk or to experimental indies with intentionally-ragged art styles. Everyone is putting their heart into their art to make something that will connect with the player. Sometimes, this can be pulled off by 1 or 2 people. Sometimes, this will require hiring more onto the team. It's slightly dissonant to see people say they want to see "worse graphics" when you're trying to get a job in texturing or particle effects and want to deliver something your team is trying to push a boundary on. This is true in both small projects and big projects. Artists are putting their stamp on Horizon Forbidden West just as much as they're putting their stamp on Venba. There are artists looking for work in the indie space who want to make better and more beautiful "graphics."
Anyway, no disrespect to people who post this meme. I understand that it's a show of support and solidarity. I understand that it's just a joke. I know that it's not a big deal.
But I'd be lying if I said that these mixed feelings didn't flash through my mind every time I saw this hedgehog. Figured I would share them.

Well, I finally did it, I finally completed Dark Souls III all the way through and both of the DLC too and now I wanna talk about my experience with the game.
So, I got to be honest and say that as a whole, Dark Souls III feels like just more of the same that Dark Souls and Dark Souls II gave us. This means that everything that I like and dislike about those games are going to be exactly the same as what I like and dislike about this game. Sure, there's probably more weapons and armor than was in DS2, but I believe that the magic system in DS3 is probably the best it's been, up until that point anyway. I am not entirely sure as I don't use magic in these games so I am really just guessing.
The point is that DS3 looks good, the sound effect are all good, the combat is smooth and good as it always is too. The things I dislike are the same too. I think that the game would benefit from a map as getting lost in some areas is very easy to do the first time through. That is also another dislike is that some of the level design is very confusing and some, especially in the DLC, gets more convoluded and that is not something I am a fan of. Like always, I feel like that if I had not been using a walkthrough, I would probably would not have finished this game at all. Also, as a minor thing, I wish that the game had more music outside of just the boss fights. To me, it makes the world of Dark Souls seem just utterly empty when there no music outside of the boss fights.
But, at the end of the day, I did enjoy my time with Dark Souls III for all the reasons that I said above. I honestly enjoyed my time with all three of the Dark Souls games with the first one and third one being my favorites of the trilogy. DS2 isn't bad, more just average compared to the other two. I would definitely recommend playing DS3, heck I'd recommend playing all three of the Dark Souls games. When it comes to souls games, it's a trilogy I know I can trust. I find it difficult to find new, good Souls games. I know Elden Rings exists and I will get to it eventually. But, I've tried the 2014 Lords of the Fallen, which is just okay, and I've tried the first Nioh game and somehow that game's level design was even more convoluded than the level design in all three of the Dark Souls games. Perhaps I will try Elden Ring next, not sure yet, have some other games I want to get to first.

Im having thoughts abt Worldbuilding and all the time i fall in love more and more abt it—
Crafting a world that feels alive is so hard but so charming and rewarding at the same time
As a fan of Tolkien, Star Wars, Zelda and DND in general i feel like if im writing a story i want to reward my readers with a world they can toy with. With a world they can seek more info and actually find it. A world they can create a character, maybe even a whole narrative, using the world's rules and details and information. Cuz it makes it feel more alive when the audience sed that world and see the possibilities right?
Thats a reason MMORPGs are so appealing to me. Genshin and Sky COTL are the biggest examples for me, cuz you can live in that world as a character and explore it as you wish! World of Warcraft is a big example too, but i can point out others like Maplestory and Trove!
Baldur's Gate, Elden Ring, BOTW & TOTK, Red Dead II, Rain World, etc, really shows a big example of a good and alive worldbuilding without it being a mmorpg, you LIVE in that world
RPG games work that well when well made! Hell, Undertale and Final Fantasy always intice the imaginary! Sandboxy games as well, the better the worldbuilding the more you crave to explore it! (Good job Minecraft)
I can even bring examples from anime! Frieren, One Piece, Witch Hat Atelier, Boku No Hero, Ghibli movies etc! It invites you in, it wants your attention and with a rich worldbuilding, simple or complex, you want to be part of it and create things!
And thats a reason that when i craft a world, i want to give it the most details i can. How is the flora & fauna of the world, politics, the environment, religion, the magic system, different people and cultures, the different species, the forces of good, evil and neutral, architecture, languages, the art!
Cuz i want people to toy with it, do their own thing inside of it! I want to look at the community and see personas and ocs and self inserts! I want to see aus and lore expansions! Especially original narratives!
If i ever make a game, it might be a MMO im not sorry im saying that. Or just a vast action-RPG! Who knows—
I cant wait to create worlds and make people fall in love with it— i cant wait

Fics Table of Contents
Prince of Death (181/250)
ACT I - The Night of Black Knives does not go as planned. Godwyn survives, though wounded near to death. A conspiracy between Ranni and Marika begins to unravel. The Confessors' Hold and the Dragon Cult vie for control. Miquella attempts to stabilize Leyndell while Rykard besieges the city.
ACT II - Ranni races back to Leyndell while Radahn turns aside to break the siege of Raya Lucaria. As the siege of Leyndell drags on and a sinister cult takes hold amidst the forces of Mt. Gelmir, Rykard slips closer to despair. Now the self-declared king of Leyndell, Miquella struggles to wrest public support away from Marika and her false prince. Beset by memories not his own, Godwyn seeks out the true nature of the entity with which he has become entangled.
A fix-it-then-break-it-then-fix-it-again fic.
Returned from the Stars (13/?)
Aurelia resurrects as a Tarnished, and falls in with a teacher of dubious trustworthiness. A sequel to @thatboreddrake's fic "To Go See the Stars."
Unalloyed (Complete!)
Millicent jailbreaks Miquella from the cocoon. Angst ensues. A Millicent-centric character study.
Grudge Match (Complete!)
Elden Ring modern AU where the demigods are a dysfunctional suburban family. All good fun, nobody dies.
Daedicar's Woe (Oneshot)
A short hurt/comfort fic where the tarnished gives Rya a pep-talk and a hug. Pure self-indulgence.
The Prehistory of Elden Ring (Oneshot)
A brief summary of my pet theories and headcanons on the deep history of the Lands Between, told in a mythic style. Canon to Prince of Death.
