Shadow and Bone is such an important show for representation, making people of many types feel seen and like they too could fit in a fantasy setting. For example, nuanced South Asian and East Asian representation that's important to both the actors and the fans. Multiple disabled characters where their disability is only one part of them. Queer characters where their queerness isn't used for tragedy + a rare setting free of homophobia. That's just what I can think of off the top of my head, there's other rep too I'm sure. Also, see this article on queer representation in fantasy for a quote by one of the actors, Jack Wolfe, about how he felt to have a queer role on such a show. Of course, as with many shows including diversity, Netflix cancelled it despite the data showing it was doing well. But we don't want to accept that, we want our rep back! So if you're reading this and haven't seen the show, please please consider signing to help us out (and/or watching the show, new viewers show demand for it to Netflix). We're at nearly 187,000 signatures so far and trying to get to 200,000 signatures this month, ideally by the time the billboard our fandom fundraised for goes up on January 22nd. We want to send a message to Netflix that shows like this are wanted, that they matter to people, and that we won't simply accept cancellation after cancellation of diverse shows

If I had a nickel for every time I saw a rotund cartoon pig named after an East Asian pork cuisine I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.

part of me: yeah i mean it's mayyybe for the better that amity didn't get a hooked nose *in canon*, considering that feature is stereotypically associated with jewish people, and amity was initially introduced as an antagonist with a wealthy and powerful family, and that fact could have played into some bad stereotypes before her and her family got more fleshed out
also me: but also i am ethnically jewish and have a prominent nose and i just really wish there were more female major characters w features like that who aren't treated as ugly by the narrative and i like her i think it would be neat if she had a hooked nose like her dad

Isn't disrespectful of slavic and east european mythlogical and culture by making redesign of (black) Elissabat...
Vampires are everywhere in the world. Not just in Romania.
We need more black representation in media The only black vampires (and dhampires) in fiction that I know:
Blade (Marvel Comics)
Richard Dracula (The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy)
Wilhamena (O.K K.O Lets be Heroes)
Laurent (Twilight)
And before their 2nd reboot Mattel wanted to introduce lightning bird character as exchange student.
In conclusion: Vampires can be all colors. Not just pale skin...

Being a southeast asian and constantly getting erased is not fun. If someone is 50% Indian and 50% white is casted in a movie set in India as an Indian character people would agree that yeah, good call. I mean yeah 100% Indian would be even better but at least he's actually Indian. But when it comes to SEA people argue that they can be replaced by east asian. Deadass I saw an argument that said they should've casted an east asian for Crazy Rich Asian because "at least they're 100% asian" THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS. Southeast asian has so few representation in Hollywood, they are even more discriminated in the acting industry, and a concerning amount of people don't even know our existence and assume we're a poor man countries (except for Singapore and Bali). Replacing a half Southeast Asian with a Chinese Canadian for a Southeast Asian character set in Southeast Asia IS NOT REPRESENTATION. Do you even know what Indonesian/Malaysian people look like?
Edit: also would like to note that CRA is not even a good SEA representation and even the director regretted some of the casting decisions. But I must reiterate that replacing a SEA actor, even if he’s half white, with a Chinese Canadian is not fixing the issue. Southeast Asia is not the same as East Asia, I thought we already learned this with Raya.

Some people: Why is there a black elf in this show? Elves can't be black!
Me: Why is there a black elf in this show? No seriously why does it seem like there's just the one, shouldn't there be more?

Realizing that Damian probably leans way more towards East Asian than Middle Eastern, genetics and cultural heritage-wise. Ra's is based on Fu Manchu, his tribe is said to be Chinese origin, the League's assassins are ninja. Talia's mother is supposed to be "Chinese-Arab" (it's such a rare mix and there's no such established community I can find) but that still makes Talia like three-quarters Chinese.
I'm glad for East Asians, but there's a heavy disappointment in hardly ever seeing a character from the other end of Asia in the DCU. Not that the East Asian rep of the DCU is anything to applaud either. Other than Lian, Cas and Katana, all the other East and Southeast Asians are villains and antagonists afaik.
It's not fair that people of colour are only given these scraps to fight over. Especially when nearly all the characters of colour we're allowed are either half-white or white-passing.

Inuit have never been cast in atla therefore atla castin has always been wrong yes even in 2005
i mean they literally did mostly cast white ppl to voice the main kids and while i can definitely see an argument that it's not as bad as casting white people in live action roles i mean i still think it's not uhhh great. anyway not sure why you phrased this like i would disagree with you? obviously i don't

i follow pjo tags that im usually fine seeing on my dash and i keep seeing people posting about some Discourse thats popped up again since the comic con card photo things came out about leah and like. i guess i curated my dash well because im seeing literally none of that
#crunchyposts#pjo#pjotv#im not tagging this with a//abeth i dont want it in my tag for her#thank god i dont follow racists and am not on reddit#the amount of people on reddit i saw who were so disappointed in them not looking like the characters#i honeslty dont really understand the gripes with them not looking like the book descriptions like any issues i had went out thewindow when#i saw actual people attached to them#i like that ann/beths black!!!!! i think it adds a lot to her character!!!!!#i dont give a shit about percys hair color!!!!!!!!!!! ive seen walker act i trust him!!!!!!!#i really dont get why people are so disappointed with it????? i saw one person say bc they had an idea of what they looked like for years#but i mean. more representation for marginalized groups#ive thought a lot about lack of rep as a queer south east asian person i was just happy there was more of it for other marginalized people#i wouldve preferred an animated show but honestly i prefer this now bc i never wouldve gotten why annabeth works better if shes black#if it was animated and they changed the race of any of them the discourse (cough and racism cough) would be 10x worse itd be awful#but like an all white cast???? i wouldnt like that either#and you KNOW the shitstorm online if they changed any major character even if it wasnt one of the main 3#anyways sorry long tags again i thought a lot about this get off my blog if you complain about any of the actors appearances i dont think w#should dictate what a childs appearance should be just for a tv show#edit actually extra thing here i think it would be kinda cool if rachel was still white so we could subvert that trope of poc love interest#being stepping stones before the main character inevitably ends up with the white main love interest#if they made it like extra clear that he was going to choose annab/th though to shut down any racism that might happen
