Footsteps hitting cobblestones and heavy breathing were the only sounds that filled your ears as you raced across the village, determined to reach your destination as soon as possible. The chilly weather had kept most people indoors, but you had an important task to accomplish, and you would not be deterred by cold wind – even if your mother had insisted on wrapping you up in the warmest coat you had before letting you leave the house.
You spotted your destination soon enough, a smile brightening your expression as you closed the remaining distance to the building. Leaning all the weight of your little body into the door, you pushed it open, taking in a deep breath as the smell of the bakery greeted you.
“Good morning, Nanami-san!” you called, pushing the door shut before walking over to the counter, where your friend’s mother was smiling kindly down at you, her hair tied back messily from her face, a little bit of flour still dusted across her cheek from earlier that morning. Her mottled brown dragon sat obediently at her side, tail twitching in greeting. “Good morning, Cinnamon,” you added, waving politely at the dragon.
“Hello, sweetheart,” the woman replied. “What can I do for you?”
“It’s Satoru’s birthday!” you answered, unable to contain your excitement. “I came to buy him a treat.”
“Is that so?” she mused, your excitement causing her eyes to crinkle slightly in the corners. “In that case, what kind of treat were you thinking of? We have a lot to choose from.”
You nodded in response, gaze shifting to scan the shelves that held all of the baked goods. “I want to get him something sweet. He likes sweet things.”
With a nod, your friend’s mother told you all of the sweet treats you could choose from: chocolate chip cookies, shortbread cookies, pastries with apples or pears or persimmons, cinnamon buns with frosting, and small chocolate or vanilla cakes.
The number of options overwhelmed you a bit, and you could do nothing but stare at all the desserts in front of you for several moments. You were so caught up in trying to think of what to pick for your friend for his birthday that you didn’t realize anyone else had come into the room, until you heard another familiar voice call your name.
“Kento!” you said, relief washing over you as your friend stepped around the counter to join you, his hand trailing lightly across Cinnamon’s wing as he stepped around her. “What do you think Satoru would like best? I’m getting him a treat for his birthday.”
At the mention of the older boy’s name, Kento’s nose crinkled up slightly, but he took your question seriously, looking over all of the options before you. “I don’t think he likes fruit very much,” he said after a moment. “But he does really like chocolate.”
You nodded in agreement, thankful to have another friend to help organize your thoughts as you considered your options. With that knowledge in mind, you were able to narrow it down to just two choices, which made deciding much easier for you.
“Can I get some chocolate chip cookies, please?” you asked, looking back up at your friend’s mother. Your smile returned to your face as she nodded, picking up four of the cookies and wrapping them up in paper before handing them to you.
“Thank you, Nanami-san!” you said excitedly, before remembering that you needed to pay for the cookies before you could take them to Satoru. You shoved your hand into the pocket of your coat, pulling out the little coin pouch your father had given you and opening it. You poured a few coins out into your palm, counting and recounting them carefully before you offered them up to the baker; it was almost everything you had managed to save up over the past couple of months, but you were more than happy to spend it all on this gift for your friend.
Once Kento’s mother had taken the coins from you, you shoved the coin pouch back into your pocket before taking the package very carefully. “Are you going to come with us to the festival later?” you asked, turning to face Kento again. Everyone else – you, Shoko, Utahime, and Satoru – had agreed to meet up later in the day so you could all watch the fireworks show the Gojo clan was supposedly putting on for their precious heir’s birthday, and you hoped that Kento would join you; he was younger than all of you by at least a year, but he was good company, and you liked having him around.
He hesitated for a moment, then turned and looked up at his mother, who just gave him a slight shrug, though her meaning was clear: it was up to him whether he joined you and your friends or not. “Can Kokoro come too?” he asked, turning back to you after a moment of consideration.
“Yeah!” you eagerly agreed, smiling brightly. Everyone in your friend group was fond of Kento’s little sister; it was hard not to be, with how sweet she was. Having her around always made you smile, and she even seemed to bring out a more well-behaved side of Satoru than almost anyone else could. “Shoko said to meet up at her house when it gets dark and then we could go find Satoru. I’ll see you then!” You bid a quick goodbye to your friend and his mother, then rushed back out into the cold.
The Gojo estate was a little further from the heart of the town than any other residence was, and as you made your way up the path to the front gates, you were glad your mother had insisted on your thickest coat; it had begun to snow at some point while you walked, and though it wasn’t snowing hard, it was enough for you to really begin to feel the chill in the air on the skin that wasn’t protected by layers of clothing.
When you finally began to approach the gates, you were stopped by a guard; if you had looked up, you would’ve been able to spot his dragon circling the estate, keeping watch from the air, just as all the other guards’ dragons did. “State your name and your purpose,” the guard said, face serious but impassive as he stared down at you.
You introduced yourself, then held up the cookies, still carefully wrapped in the paper the baker had packaged them in. “Satoru is my friend, I’m here to give him a present for his birthday. May I see him, please?” Normally, you were inclined to behave more like Satoru, who liked demanding what he wanted from his family, rather than asking for permission, but you doubted you would be granted permission to see your friend if you acted that way this time.
The guard looked you over for a moment before apparently deciding you posed no threat, and he gave you a slight nod, taking out his key and unlocking the gate for you. He ushered you inside, closing and locking the gate behind you once again.
As you stepped onto the estate, you spotted a woman about the same age as your mother, and you recognized her as Satoru’s favorite nanny, her grey and white dragon walking figure eights around her legs. “Hello!” you called out with a wave, smiling as you walked a bit closer to her. “Do you know where Satoru is? I have a present to give him for his birthday.”
The woman looked up when you called out to her, and she smiled as she recognized you. “Good morning, love. Last I saw Satoru, he was still in his room. I doubt anyone has been able to make him leave yet. You know how he is.”
A soft giggle escaped your lips before you could stop it; you knew exactly how Satoru was. He hated early mornings – in his mind, anything before ten o’clock was “early” – and he refused to leave his bed before that time. Even after he did get out of bed, he often refused to change out of his sleep clothes to get dressed in “real” clothes for the day. You thanked the nanny for her help, then turned and raced off in the direction of Satoru’s chambers. He had almost an entire wing of the house to himself, and a large section of the gardens to go with it. The gardens on the Gojo estate had always been one of the most beautiful things to you, even in the winter, so you chose to continue your journey outside, rather than go inside and have to fuss with taking off your shoes and your coat, and have to worry about staying quiet and respectful.
It didn’t take long for you to reach Satoru’s area of the house – you’d been to the estate enough times to know your way around by now – and you hastily climbed up onto the engawa by his bedroom. You paused for a moment to catch your breath, then knocked on the wood frame of the shoji screen in front of you. “Satoru,” you called out. “Are you awake?”
“No,” came the muffled reply from within. “It’s too early, go away.”
“But it’s me, Satoru!” you insisted with a whine.
“Go away,” he repeated.
“I brought you a birthday present.”
There was a pause, then the sound of grumbling and a shuffle of fabric approaching the door. Satoru slid the door open enough to peek at you, eyes narrowed against the light of the sun, and in apparent annoyance at your insistence for him to come see you. He had a thick blue blanket wrapped around him like a cloak, and his hair was sticking up in completely unnatural directions from his sleep. “What did you bring me?”
“I don’t even get a ‘good morning’? No ‘it’s so good to see you!’?” you asked somewhat playfully, unable to help but tease your friend a little bit.
“No,” Satoru replied shortly, a small scowl on his face. “I can’t say good morning because it’s not a good morning, you woke me up early. On my birthday.”
You sighed dramatically at his words, though a small part of you did feel bad for waking Satoru up when you knew he really wasn’t a morning person. Despite your antics, you held out the paper bundle to him, and he was quick to take it from you.
It was clear that Satoru was eager to open the package and see what you’d decided to get him, but he was careful as he unwrapped it, not wanting to damage whatever was inside. When he finally opened the paper enough to see what was inside, his eyes widened, and he looked up at you in amazement. “You got me cookies?”
You nodded excitedly, grinning brightly at your friend. “Yeah! I know you like sweet stuff, and I wanted you to have something you didn’t have to share with anyone else.”
Satoru stared at you for a moment longer, then dropped his gaze back to the cookies in his hands, like he couldn’t believe they were real. “Where did you get them?”
“I bought them from Nanami-san earlier,” you said. “Kento said you probably wouldn’t like the fruit pastries, so I decided to get you the cookies. I know you like chocolate.”
“You bought them?”
“Yes.”
“For me?”
“Yes. Satoru, are you feeling okay?” You tilted your head slightly as you looked at him, your brows pinched together in concern.
He nodded slowly after a moment, looking up from his hands to meet your eyes again. “I just didn’t think anyone would get me anything,” he said quietly, and you frowned even more.
“Don’t you always get a lot of gifts from your family?” From what you could remember of his birthday the previous year, Satoru had been surrounded in gift boxes wrapped in silks and satins, everything too expensive to even consider putting something as simple as paper on the outside.
Satoru shrugged then, lowering himself carefully to sit on the floor just inside the doorway, the blanket he’d dragged with him from his bed still somehow wrapped around him. “Yeah, my family gets me stuff, and sometimes the other clans will send things, too, but it’s not anything I want, y’know? It’s always super fancy clothes I can’t sit down in because they’ll wrinkle, or books about war or politics or breeding dragons. Stupid grown up stuff.” He scowled into the middle distance, clearly not looking forward to another year with the same types of gifts. As his gaze drifted once again to the cookies in his lap, though, his scowl melted away. “This is the first time I've gotten a gift I liked. Thank you.”
Heat flooded your face despite the chill in the air; Satoru never said thank you to anybody for anything, so for him to say it to you, for something as small as birthday cookies? You were beyond surprised. After a moment, you realized he was staring up at you again, his too-blue eyes wide and full of… something you couldn’t quite name. He didn’t look upset, though, which was reassuring. “You’re welcome,” you replied, suddenly feeling a little bashful.
“I, uh, I have to go home now,” you added after a moment, giving your friend an apologetic look when he seemed to pout. “My mom told me to come straight home after I gave you your present, and if I’m late she’ll get upset. But everybody’s gonna meet at Shoko’s house tonight so we can find you for the fireworks! I’ll see you later, okay?”
He nodded, still seeming a bit disappointed over the fact that you couldn’t spend more time with him. Before he could get too lost in his own head, though, you dropped to the floor and squeezed him tight in a brief hug. “Happy birthday, Satoru,” you said quietly, then pushed yourself back to your feet, turning and racing towards the gates so you could go home like you’d promised your mother.
Because your back was turned, you failed to see the blush high on Satoru’s cheeks, and the way he smiled brightly in your direction after you left.
Tumblr media
You hated being late. It always made you feel like you were wasting other people’s time when you were late, and even at the tender age of seven, you didn’t like making anyone wait for you like that. Luckily for you, none of your friends seemed as concerned about your tardiness as you were; Kokoro in particular seemed excited to see you, smiling brightly and waving at you enthusiastically as she clung to her brother with her other hand.
“Your mom got caught up fixing your hair again, didn’t she?” Shoko asked as you approached, before you could even apologize for holding everyone else up.
A frown tugged the corners of your lips, and you reached up to touch your hair with one hand. “Can you tell? Does it look bad?” Everyone knew your mother had the habit of fretting over every detail of your appearance whenever you attended events put on by the Gojo clan, though you never really understood why; it wasn’t like the Gojo clan cared much for children outside the family.
Utahime bumped Shoko lightly with her hip, then offered you a smile. “I think it looks really nice,” she said kindly, and you could tell that she meant it.
“Really nice!” Kokoro agreed enthusiastically, her sweet little face already a little pink from the chill in the air.
You smiled back at the youngest member of the group, though you felt your cheeks heat slightly at her earnestness, for some reason. “Okay, we’re all here now,” you said, turning your attention back to Shoko. “We should probably find Satoru before his parents lock him down.”
Everyone nodded in agreement, and together you headed off to the center of town, ducking and weaving your way between adults lingering around food stalls and talking loudly amongst each other, though everyone’s dragons for the most part stayed out of your way, not eager to be jostled but a bunch of children. You kept an eye out for your friend’s shock of white hair as you navigated through the festivities, but you couldn’t quite catch a glimpse of him. You were so focused on your search, in fact, that you nearly jumped out of your skin when you felt someone wrap their arms around your waist and lift you a couple inches off the ground.
“Found you!” Satoru cheered, and even without being able to see his face yet, you could tell he had an impish grin plastered across his lips.
“Satoru, please put them down before you cause a scene,” Utahime sighed, and when you looked over at her, you could already see a hint of annoyance in her features.
“Who cares if I cause a scene? It’s my birthday,” Satoru replied indignantly, but he did set you back down on your own two feet.
Once you were free from your friend’s surprise embrace, you turned to face him, and you were able to see his grin return in real time. It looked like maybe someone had tried to slick his hair back into some sort of more refined style, but he had managed to get it back to its usual fluffy, slightly messy state. He was dressed in a silk kimono – real silk, the expensive kind that your parents would likely never be able to afford – that was a pretty shade of light blue, dragonflies dancing across the fabric in a slightly darker shade of blue. The fabric seemed so thin you had to wonder how he wasn’t shivering.
“You look nice,” you told him, taking a moment to straighten your own kimono from where it had gotten twisted when he’d grabbed you.
“I always look nice,” he replied, looking a bit smug. When he caught Kento scowling and Utahime rolling her eyes at him, though, he added, “But thank you. You look nice too.”
“When do the fireworks start?” Kokoro asked, sounding like she was about to burst from the anticipation.
Satoru turned to her with a grin as he answered. “Pretty soon,” he told her. “And I have the perfect place for us to see them, without anyone else getting in the way. You wanna go?”
“Yeah!” she cheered, then seemed to mellow out a bit and follow it up with a “Please can we go?” You could only assume her brother had squeezed her hand to remind her of her manners.
Her reaction almost seemed to make Satoru’s chest puff up with pride, and he nodded eagerly. “Yep! Everyone follow me!” Without any further warning, he took off across the town center, leaving the rest of you to scramble to keep up with him.
“Satoru!” you called after him, trying your hardest to catch up to him, somehow managing not to trip or step on anyone’s feet, though you did get squawked at by a few dragons. “Satoru, slow down!”
You surged forward a few more steps, managing to close the space between you enough to grab his hand in your own, thankfully causing him to slow down a bit as he turned to look at you.
“Slowpoke,” he teased, and you just stuck your tongue out at him. When someone took your other hand, though, you turned, seeing a somewhat breathless Utahime clutching your hand, Shoko on her other side, followed by Kento, then Kokoro bringing up the rear, everyone looking a bit red in the face from the sudden sprint across the festival.
Seemingly satisfied that everyone was with him now, Satoru began leading the way again, though this time at a blessedly slower pace that made keeping up with him much easier.
He led everyone through the festival, all the way out of the town center and towards the peach orchard that occupied a good chunk of the space between the town and the Gojo estate.
“You’re not expecting us to climb trees in our nice kimonos, are you?” Utahime asked, sounding somewhat horrified at the idea. She stopped in her tracks then, bringing everyone else to a halt as well, either to avoid crashing into her or to not wind up dragging her across the orchard.
Satoru turned, a frown on his face as he looked over at her. “What? Of course not, I’m not stupid,” he said, clearly offended by her words.
Utahime continued to stare at him, unconvinced.
“I’m not!” he insisted, his frown pinching into a full-on scowl.
“If we’re not climbing the trees,” you cut in, not wanting this to escalate into an argument. “Then where are we going to watch the show?”
“The observation deck,” Satoru answered, as if it were obvious, before pulling everyone along behind him once again. It didn’t take long to reach the observation deck, and you all stared up at it for a moment; the platform was almost level with the treetops, which meant there was a completely unobstructed view of the sky.
“Is it safe?” a small voice asked, and you turned to see Kokoro clinging a bit tighter to her brother, her brows furrowed with worry.
“Yes, it’s safe,” Satoru answered, before Kento could get in a word of his own. “The stairs to get up and down are sturdy, and there’s a railing on the platform. You don’t need to worry about anything.”
You were a bit surprised to hear how serious he sounded, though when you turned back to face him he was still smiling, doing his best to reassure the little girl.
“I’ll go up first so you can see, how about that?”
Kokoro hesitated for a moment, then nodded in response to the question, though she already seemed a little more at ease just from Satoru’s confidence.
Satoru nodded back, grabbing onto one side of the handrail and climbing easily up the stairs, not pausing or looking back until he was up on the platform. “See?” he called down, stepping to the railing and waving at the rest of you, a bright grin on his face. “Nothing to be worried about! Everything’s okay!”
You exchanged looks first with Utahime and Shoko, who shared a look between themselves before shrugging, making their way over to the stairs; they hadn’t exactly been worried in the first place, but now they had no reason not to join Satoru on the platform. As they climbed the stairs, you turned your attention back to the two youngest members of the group, tilting your head curiously.
“Do you want to come up and join us?” you asked gently. “You don’t have to, if you’d rather go back to the festival and find your family, I’ll walk you back.” Though the idea of missing the fireworks with the rest of your friends did make you sad, you knew you wouldn’t be able to properly enjoy them anyways if you were worried about Kento and Kokoro navigating their way out of the orchard and back to the festival all on their own.
“Yes,” the little girl said after a moment, nodding slightly as she walked closer to the stairs, though she paused and looked back at her brother before she started climbing. “Are you coming too, nii-chan?”
“I’ll be right behind you,” Kento promised, offering his sister a gentle smile of encouragement.
With that, Kokoro was holding tight to the handrail, making her way up the stairs slowly but surely, her brother following right after her, fully prepared to catch her if she were to somehow lose her footing.
You gave them a few moments to begin their trek up the stairs before you followed them, not wanting to crowd them at all. Within a few minutes, all three of you were stepping up onto the platform itself, and you took a moment to admire the view of the stars before the fireworks started.
“It’s pretty up here, isn’t it?” Satoru’s voice was quiet beside you as he spoke, as if he only intended for you to hear.
You nodded in agreement, looking over at him after a moment longer of stargazing. “Have you been up here before?”
“A few times, yeah,” he said with a shrug. “I sneak up here when my family gets annoying, sometimes.”
Unused to such vulnerability from the boy beside you, you were unsure how to respond. “Why fireworks?” you blurted after a moment, immediately feeling your face grow hot with embarrassment; it was definitely not how you’d meant to respond, but there was no taking it back now.
“Huh?”
“Why are your parents doing fireworks this year? Is there something big in your family about turning eight? It’s not like you’ll meet your dragon this year.”
“Oh,” Satoru said, then shrugged slightly. “I don’t know. If it’s a big deal nobody ever told me. They just said they were doing a fireworks show.”
It still seemed a bit odd to you, but it was obvious you weren’t going to get any other answer out of the white haired boy, so you decided to drop the subject.  Luckily for you, though, the first of the fireworks launched into the sky with a shrill sound before bursting into bright red sparks overhead, effectively pulling everyone’s attention and pushing the question of why there were fireworks in the first place far from your mind.
All of you stared, completely enraptured by the flashing lights and colors above your heads, for several minutes. When a smaller series of bursts created the shape of a dragonfly in the air, you remembered the kimono your friend was wearing, and you reached over to take his hand, never looking away from the fireworks. You leaned a bit closer into his side, wanting to make sure he could hear you when you spoke.
“Happy birthday, Satoru,” you said quietly, in a brief lull between explosions.
He said nothing in response, nor did he look over at you, but he gave your hand a light squeeze, and he leaned his head lightly against your own; a small, silent moment, just for the two of you, even with all your other friends around.
If you had known that that would be one of the last moments like that you’d get to share with him, you would have treasured it more.

As you all know, I am a slut for dividers and love using different ones for my characters and special little events. I am trying to get better at crediting the artists who make them because that takes some time and dedication. Plus, they are also typically sharing their skills and content for free.
That being said:
Special thank you to:
@cafekitsune for sharing their beautiful graphic design skills with all of us. I am using this divider from them, but there are SO MANY options. Please peep their page! 💕
Tumblr media
Another special thank you to @saradika-graphics When I was hunting for a MDNI divider, I ended up finding this instead, and it does match my feelings so much more. She also has a ton of graphic design work that she shared for free. Please check out her work as well 💕

Dante thrived on being the best at whatever he did. He saw someone do whatever they did; he wanted to do it better. Showing off his lavender silk shirt, he paraded through the ocean of people waiting for the next car race. Admiring the cars and the sounds of the engines, his attention focused on a woman sitting on the hood of a Ford Mustang. Her legs swung back and forth as she leaned back on her arms. Dante raised his scarred brow, taking her in. She looked young, in her 20s, maybe early 30s. She was wearing purple, not his shade of lavender, perhaps darker. Dante smiled when the woman tilted her head in his direction, her eyes locked with his. This wasn’t the first time he had seen her; she had been here every night for the past week. Racing her in car, watching Dante race in his, both looking at each other from far away but never speaking. Tonight, that was about to change.
Making his way over, she grinned, raking her fingers through her hair. She pretended not to know Dante was coming her way, looking at the sky. She was playing coy. Dante chuckled as he sat beside her; he leaned over. “That’s a pretty dress; too bad it could be ripped off your body tonight”, Dante breathed, his voice husky, his lips ghosting over her shoulder. She fluttered her eyelashes softly, studying Dante’s expression; his green eyes met hers. “That would be too bad; it happens to be my favourite,” she told him with a giggle. Dante hummed lightly. The corner of his mouth quirked in amusement. “I’ve yet to know your name”, He purred. She bit her bottom lip playfully. “Y/n”, she gave him her name with a seductive smile. “And do I get to know yours?” She asked for his. Dante laughed lightly before grasping her hand gently. “Dante”, he kissed her hand. Y/n felt her breath hitch at the touch of his hand on hers. Y/n’s eyes sparkled with interest, matching Dante’s. His thumb traced her hand delicately, trailing up her arm and his fingers, leaving a fire trail in their wake. Y/n whimpered lightly at the feeling. Dante noticed a smirk dancing on his handsome face.
“I hope you’ll remember my name, princess. I want to hear you scream it tonight.” he teased Y/n. Her eyes widened at his bold words, a blush on her cheeks. “Is that a promise, or are you just that confident?” she replied, breathing heavily, her heart racing as Dante leaned to her ear, kissing her neck lightly. “Both”, he growled lowly.
Dante swept Y/n off the hood of her car and walked through the crowd, returning to his villa where he was spending the week. Y/n stood behind him as he pulled out his room key card and opened it successfully. Dante stepped aside, letting Y/n walkthrough. Closing the door behind them, Y/n admired the villa around her; Dante must be rich; she looked back at him as he walked to the bar. She couldn’t pin him, but he did look familiar; maybe that’s why she was so intrigued by him throughout their time here. Dante turned around with two glasses on the counter. “What is the lady’s poison?” he grinned Y/n leaned on the marble countertop. “Whatever you think will loosen me up the most for you”, she answered. Dante’s eyes shined with amusement as he winked. “Lucky for you, a bartender always knows their customers” he poured them both a whiskey, each raising their glasses and drinking the liquid in one sip. Y/n never had whiskey before, but she didn’t hate how it tasted. It was smoother than she expected, just like Dante.
Nodding, she breathed, “That will loosen someone up” She put down the glass. Dante circled the counter and cupped her face, kissing her passionately. Moaning, Y/n wrapped her arms around his neck, his arms lifting her. “Dante”, Y/n moaned, her legs wrapped around his waist. “Yeah?” he mumbled, kissing her neck; he carried her to the bed and laid her down. “I changed my mind,” she said as Dante pulled away, looking confused and slightly hurt. “Oh, uh well, this is awk-” he started, and Y/n put her hands on his chest. “No, no, I mean, I changed my mind about you ripping my dress. It’s not my favourite,” she said, lying on the bed, Dante’s eyes widening in surprise. He grinned, his hands rubbing her body. “You sure about that? It is pretty,” he pretended to convince her, his hands already beginning to pull at her dress. Y/n nodded, batting her eyelashes. “Please”, she pleaded. Dante indeed ripped her dress just like he said he would, a sharp gasp escaping her mouth, feeling the cool air hit her heated skin.
Dante admired her on his bed; she blushed under his gaze, her hands reaching for him. Dante removed his shirt, leaning down to kiss Y/n again; her hands touched his bare chest, feeling his muscles flex under her touch. Moaning into the kiss, Y/n’s hands tugged at Dante’s belt, unbuckling it. Pulling away from the kiss, Dante threw the belt away, raking his fingers through his hair and breathing heavily. “Someone is eager”, his rich baritone voice sent shivers through her, his hips ground against hers, pressing his hard cock in between her legs. “And you’re so wet. I’ve barely done anything yet, princess,” he rumbled, his fingers tracing her breasts spilling out of the top of her bra, leaving featherlight kisses afterwards. Y/n moaned at the sensation on her skin, lifting herself off the bed and into his body. Needing to feel him closer, Y/n pulled him toward her. Dante’s pupils, dilated and blown with lust, observed her movements with a light snicker. He rested his head on hers gently. “Shh, I’ll take care of you”, he whispered in a soft moan, watching Dante sit up slowly; he removed her black lace underwear teasingly down her legs, kissing as he did so. Y/n unclasped her bra, throwing the garment on the floor.
Dante picked Y/n up and sat her on his lap. Feeling her arousal soak his silk pants, he groaned his tongue and swiped her bottom lip teasingly. Rolling her hips, Y/n blushed, grinding down on him, both moaning loudly. “There you go, princess. Gotta get you ready for me” he held her face hissing, feeling his cock twitch in his pants. Balancing herself with her palms on his shoulders, Y/n threw her head back. Dante kissed her throat, his arms wrapped around her. Pulling her down harder, he grunted at the feeling. Softly kissing her sternum, Dante kissed and sucked love bites on her breasts. “Love these” “ he growled Y/n giggled at his obsession with her breasts. He’s definitely a boob guy. She noted in her mind. “Dante!” Her mouth fell open in a loud cry. Her body began to grow hot, feeling her orgasm build in her core. Her thighs began to ache as her body moved faster, chasing her climax. Dante grinned, looking down and seeing her wetness seep into the silk. He closed his eyes, bucking his hips up and moaning. Flipping them over, he spread Y/n’s legs, pinning her beneath him.
Panting, Dante let out a broken groan, thrusting harder Y/n whined, arching her body off the bed. “Yes, Dante, please”, she begged, wrapping her arms around him and feeling her climax wash over like a wave. Dante groaned, feeling his release spill as they both moaned. Recovering after a few minutes, Dante stood up and pulled off his remaining clothes. Seeing the wet patch, he smirked. “You made a real mess”, he teased her Y/n’s eyes fluttered open, and a beautiful yet dazed smile graced her lips. “No man has made me make such a mess”, she praised him with a cheeky smirk.
Dante’s eyes lit up as Y/n spread her legs from him to climb in between. Kissing her breasts, taking his time worshipping each one, he moaned low in his throat. “You are absolutely perfect, better than my imagination. And my imagination is wild” he licked his lips before kissing Y/n’s lips, his hand draping one of her legs around his torso. “You’ve had the wrong men in your life, baby girl. Don’t worry, Daddy is here now” he lined himself up with her wet entrance, the tip of his cock brushing her clit. Y/n’s eyes closed tightly, her mouth agape. Dante licked a broad stroke up her neck to her cheek as he buried himself inside her.
Feeling how tight she was, Dante felt his eyes roll back into his head, holding himself back from fucking her roughly. Y/n gripped his biceps tightly as she felt Dante fill her to the hilt. “Oh fuck princess”, Dante croaked, his arms on either side of Y/n’s head, caging her underneath. Y/n wrapped her other leg around his torso, pulling him closer. “You’re so big, Daddy; it feels so good.” She looked him in the eyes, sensing his reserve, and Y/n touched his cheek. “What’s wrong?” she asked with a look of concern. He shook his head and leant on his forearms. “It’s taking all I have not to fuck you dumb into this bed. But I don’t want to,” he murmured, moving slowly, rocking his hips. His lips ghosted over Y/n’s, both panting a grunt, leaving Dante’s lips; noticing her eyes closed and her face contorted in pleasure, he smiled, his lips kissing the corner of her mouth. His breath was fanning her cheek. “You’re taking me so well, princess”, he praised Y/n’s walls clenched around him as he praised her. “Oh, someone likes being praised, hmm”, he purred Y/n moaned his words, making her wetter. Dante intertwined her hand with his, lacing their fingers.
Writhing under Dante, Y/n’s body moved with his matching thrusts. Hitting her sweet spot and everywhere in between, she could feel every inch of him fill her deeply. She had never seen a man as big as Dante before, and she loved every moment. She was used to rough fucking and the typical one-night stands; she wouldn’t have minded that from Dante. But this sensual side she didn’t see often, he knew how to look after a woman. Tending to her needs, worshipping her like a goddess. He didn’t just want to screw her in the bed like a madman, and that’s it; he admitted he did, but he wanted to savour it.
Both were drowning in each other’s eyes, touches, and bodies. Y/n’s mind drifted to how they had met. Over the past week, the sexual attraction between them grew as they watched one another. Y/n loved seeing Dante climb into his lavender car, purposely revving his engine while he looked at her, blowing her an air kiss as he winked at her. Y/n would catch his kiss and place it on her chest. Dante would hang out his window, reaching out for her in faux desperation before taking off in his race. When it was her turn to race, she would bend over and start her car from the outside. Dante’s lips would curl, taking in her little show, his chest heaving with lust. Climbing into her car, she would bite her finger before sucking the pad. Her tongue would lick the extra saliva built up. Dante’s eyes would harden, swallowing deeply before walking away, tending to his growing hard cock. Y/n would giggle as she prepared for her race. When she won, Y/n grabbed a drink from the bar and downed her shot. Dante’s green eyes watched her every move; sensing him, she would look over her shoulder and smile. She was teasing him.
One night, she drove him insane while he waited to race against his opponent, and he rolled his head to the side. His eyes widened as he leant out of her window, and his mouth fell open as she waved at him. She wore a low v-neck shirt and the shortest pair of shorts he had ever seen. Sucking on a lollipop, his nose flared as he gripped the steering wheel, his focus on the road. His eyes and head slowly turned as she winked, mouthing, ‘Good luck, baby’ Dante clenched his jaw, revving the engine loudly. Everyone cheered as he narrowed his eyes. Y/n’s eyes lit up in excitement; he grinned, putting his foot on the pedal and holding it down. Dante licked his lips. “That what you want”, he mouthed back Y/n nodded, biting the lollipop as the flag in front of Dante came down and Dante’s lavender impala sped off. Coming back over the finish line, Dante cheered, spinning around victorious. His eyes fell on Y/n, and she applauded him with a grin. Dante sighed as she disappeared into the crowd, missing his last chance to speak to her. Or so he thought.
“Y/n baby, you okay?” Dante’s voice pulled her out of her thoughts; she nodded and giggled, “Just thinking about how much teasing you endured from me over the week”, Dante growled at her words, thrusting hard, making her mewl “Yes, well, maybe if someone had stopped disappearing before I had the chance to speak, I wouldn’t have had to” he grunted Y/n wriggled feeling Dante’s hips rut into her roughly “You loved it” She whispered a light laugh erupting from his lips “Quite the assumption” he replied kissing her neck. Y/n mewled at the feeling of Dante filling her up; he stayed true to his word. He didn’t fuck her roughly; he wanted to take his time and cherish her. “You just loved fucking teasing me, my little vixen”, he panted with a hearty laugh against her cheek Y/n hummed in response. “You did some teasing yourself, too, if I recall”, Y/n replied, whining loudly when Dante hit her sweet spot roughly. “Yeah, but you deserved it. I might be taking it easy with you now. But next time, I’m going to fuck you so hard you’ll struggle to walk,” he growled Y/n shuddered. “I look forward to it” She kissed him roughly. She moaned into the kiss, feeling her second climax approaching rapidly. “Daddy, don’t stop”, Dante moaned, his cool rings soothing her heated skin as he gripped her waist. “Don’t worry, baby daddy’s got you”, he murmured, pecking her forehead. “Gonna come for me, princess?” he asked her. She nodded, looking into his green eyes. Biting her lip, Dante thrust wildly, his hips rutting harshly into Y/n’s. He gripped the headboard, his knuckles turning white as he came inside her with a loud groan. Y/n wrapped her arms under his shoulders, crying out as she came around his cock. “Fuck”, Dante breathed; coming down from his high, he brushed the sweaty hair out of Y/n’s face.
Pecking her lips, he laid his head in between her breasts, blowing small raspberries, tickling her skin, her fingers raking through his hair tenderly. “Hope you aren’t needed back anywhere by anyone anymore” Dante kissed her chest, sucking the skin Y/n let out a soft moan. “Why do you say that?” She asked him, her eyes fluttering, seeing him raise his head and look into her eyes, a playful grin on his lips.
“My darling princess, you’re mine now.”

It’s been almost a month since you’ve had a full conversation with Trafalgar, way too fucking long for your own liking. Normally you two talked everyday, sitting in his office for hours talking your ass off as he continued his studies in medicine. Was it weird that you had a more.. intimate relation with your captain? Maybe. But so what, he didn’t seem bothered by it, but now you don’t know anymore. — You stood outside his office door, contemplating if you should really be bothering him. You screwed your eyes shut, head tilted down towards the ground, the plate of onigiri in your hand shaking ever so slightly. Before you could knock the door creaked open, causing you to jump. Your eyes met those scarily bright yellow irises, he looked more tired than usual. — He muttered your name in confusion, looking down at you as he leaned against the doorway.
You both stared at each other before you looked down at the onigiri holding it up to his face. “I uh made your favorite..”, he stared at you more intensely, blinking at you before sleepily smiling at you. That tired expression causing butterflies to flutter around in your stomach. He stayed silent before stepping aside inviting you inside, “so, uh what you been up to?”. You heard him close and lock the door behind you, you set the plate down on his desk, noticing and large amount of paper he had scattered everywhere.
“Research.” He said tiredly, sitting down on his couch, you stood a few feet away looking at him nervously. A painstakingly amount of time goes by before he speaks again, “Im sorry.”, you looked at him confused before smiling, and shaking your head.
“It’s okay, you’ve been busy.”, Law sighed leaning back and patting his thigh. You bit your lip stepping forward before sitting on his lap, he caressed the fat of your thighs in a reassuring manner.
“I could never be too busy for you.. ‘m sorry.”. He frowned at you causing those butterflies from earlier to come back. The feeling of his hands on his your thighs and this close proximity was enough to get you going, but you didn’t want to ruin this loving moment with your sexual desires. Before you could reply, the sound of knocking on his door made the both of you jump, he gently lifted you, setting you aside before getting up and walking over to the door. He looked back at you before opening the door ever so slightly to see who was outside the door.
“Oh, yes Bepo?” It was hard to make out what Bepo was saying from the other side of the wall but it had to be something important, based on the look Law was making. “I see.. thank you for informing me.”. Law shut the door just a few moments after, turning back to look at you.
You were sitting on the couch, looking back at him with a slightly confused expression. “What was that about?”. He shook his head, before claiming the seat next to you again. His arm wrapped around your waist pulling you in close to him. — You two sat there enjoying the rather peaceful moment, its been so long since you’ve been held like this by him, it felt nice.
“Thank you for the rice balls.” You hummed in response, nodding your head and smirking up at him. Law took that opportunity to grab your chin, not forcibly of course, but tight enough to keep your head in place. “I missed you s’much y/n-ya”,
“I missed you too Law,” he pulled you in close, giving you a tender kiss. Sending butterflies down to your core. If a matter of seconds you find yourself scrambling to get on-top of him, your lips sloppily crushing together, a mix of saliva pouring down your chin. Law shoves his tongue past your lips without warning, causing you to jolt, moaning on his tongue. His hand guided your hips as he slowly grinds you against his clothed cock.
You pull apart from one another a trail of saliva connected to yours lips. “L.. Law ah- Babyy.”, he smirks at the sound of his name leaving your pretty mouth. He gently pushes you onto your back, kissing on your neck and down to your collarbone as he raises your waist, just enough to pull off your pants and underwear.
Law kissed down your chest and abdomen before settling in between your legs, your thighs resting on his shoulder. He looked up at you, those eyes staring back at you. “I almost forgot how fuckin’ pretty you look under me.”, before you could respond to his words, the feeling of his fingers slowly rubbing against your clit sent a shiver down your spine. “God I missed this.” he huffed, before shoving his fingers deep inside your cunt.
The sudden stretch causes you to yelp, your back arching as you try to wiggle out of his grip. His free hand grabbed your neck squeezing ever so slightly, “Stay put.”. You let out a small whimper, screwing your eyes shut as his fingers fucked into your aching hole.
Your toes curled as you clenched around his fingers, that tight knot deep in you quickly coming undone. “Law.. ‘m c.. cum-ing” Law smiled, pulling his fingers out if your dripping cunt, you let out a loud pout unable to reach your high. Law caressed your cheek with a smirk.
“Don’t pout like that, i just wanna taste you.”, his head dipped down making quick work of the ache in your core. Your back arched as he slowly licked a long strip through your folds, groaning rather loudly at the taste of you; eyes practically rolled to the back of his head. He shoved his fingers back inside leaky hole whilst sucking on your swollen clit.
“You taste so fucking good.” You moaned, feeling that already loose not to completely come undone. He continued fingering through your high, body practically going limp. “Ah. ah. we’re not done beautiful.”, he smiled lovingly at you, wiping your juices from his chin before licking his fingers. He pulled you closer by your leg; Pulling off your sweat drenched tank top and unbuckling your bra. He made quick work of his pants pushing them down along with his briefs.
You let out a whimper at the sight of his hardened cock, pre-cum leaking from the slit, “Y’see whatchu do to me?, i can’t wait to feel your tight fucking pussy.”, Law climbed up your body lining the head of his cock with your entrance, he took you by neck lifting you slightly. Connecting your lips in a rough kiss, you moaned at his eagerness; you clawed at his back tears stinging your eyes, accidentally biting his bottom lip as he pushed his length inside of you slowly.
Turning your head to look away from him you let out a small cry, “Ah!- fuckk.” You whine tangling your fingers in his messy locks. Law progressively grew quicker with his strokes, his grip around your neck growing tighter. Your vision grew blurry, the only sound leaving your lips were moans and cries.
“Y’take my cock so fuckin well.”, Law started to get sloppy, the feeling of his cock twitching inside of you as his breathing became heavy. “C-“ he swallowed his moan, “cummin..” he muttered in your, you bit down on your bottom lip almost drawing blood. Eyes rolling back, at the feeling of hot liquid filling you.
Law collapsed on top of you, the both of you let out satisfied sighs before laughing tiredly. Your fingers toyed with his hair, as he kissed your chest. “So, will you have more time for me again?”, he glared up at you, before nodding.
“I’ll see what i can do.”

It wasn’t long after Satoru had told your group of friends about Kenji that other people in the settlement started finding out. Not that it was difficult, since now the little dragon had taken to riding on top of Satoru’s head and messing up his hair – which Satoru lamented about constantly, and insisted was intentional – when they were out and about in the settlement. After word had spread to virtually everyone who lived in the settlement, Satoru was allowed a bit more freedom to come and go from the Gojo estate, though his lessons with his tutors and his training sessions with Yaga still took up much of his time.
Despite all of your friends’ best efforts to make nice with Kenji, he seemed totally uninterested in anyone that wasn’t you or Satoru, and, on occasion, Kokoro, because she was prone to sneaking him cookies from the bakery. The seeming indifference from the dragon didn’t seem to particularly upset anyone in the group, but Satoru saw it as something to brag about, even if somewhat jokingly, saying things like, You’re just not cool enough for him I guess,” and “He’d pay more attention to you if you were more fun,” always with a giant, mischievous grin on his face.
It had absolutely devastated him one day when Kento had replied with “Maybe he knows you need a taste of your own medicine.” Satoru had refused to speak to Kento for a full three days until he apologized.
This new normal – stepping back into the old dynamic of the group, but now with a playful dragon in the mix – settled in quickly, and for that you were grateful. The seven of you spending time together playing games and causing trouble in between lessons and training became a daily routine again. Before you knew it, days turned to weeks, and weeks into months, until almost a year had come and gone, the passage of time only marked by birthdays and the changing of the seasons. One by one, you each turned a year older; by the time the New Year’s festival was coming up again, Satoru was nine, you, Shoko, and Utahime, were eight, Kento was seven, and Kokoro was five.
The festival went as the last few had: fireworks, cookies in the shapes of the moon phases and stars, and you, Shoko, Utahime, and Satoru spending an almost absurd amount of time with the ring toss game. This year, the prize you all had your eye on was an expertly crafted stuffed animal that resembled a bear – at least, you all assumed it was supposed to be a bear – to give to Kokoro.
“Yaga-sensei makes stuffed animals like that in his spare time,” Satoru explained, when Utahime asked where the toy had come from.
“Are you sure he actually knows what a bear looks like?” Shoko asked, tossing one of her rings and sighing when it bounced off the peg she had aimed for. “Because even I know that they’re not generally…purple.”
You laughed at that, not even caring that it caused you to miss your mark, too; Satoru had the money to pay for all four of you to play all night, if that’s what it took for you to win the prize.
“Well I think purple is a fun color,” you replied, trying and failing to bite back a grin at the exasperated look you got from Shoko, though she said nothing else as she got another set of rings to throw.
By the time you’d won the stuffed animal – Utahime had outscored all of you, which had earned her praise from you and Shoko, and also meant she’d won her bet against Satoru, so he had to buy her any snack she wanted from the whole festival – the fireworks show was about to start, which meant you all had to race to the booth the Nanami family had been selling desserts out of so you could collect your other two friends, and present Kokoro with the prize that had been won for her.
Just like Satoru’s eighth birthday, all of you snuck off to the peach orchard and climbed up to the observation deck to watch the show. Utahime and Shoko sat huddled together, sharing the taiyaki pastries Utahime had made Satoru buy her; Kento and Kokoro stood closer to the railing, the little girl clutching the “bear” in a death grip; you and Satoru laid on your backs near the center of the platform, looking up at the fireworks without having to strain your necks, a mostly empty bag of konpeito lying forgotten between you. As always, the display included the moon in various phases, snowflakes being overtaken by flowers, all interspersed with bright flashes of red, gold, and white.
Kenji, now too big to be satisfied with staying bundled into his rider’s clothes, laid curled up with his head on your shoulder, apparently content to sleep through the whole show, despite how loud it was.
All in all, you felt good. You were happy, and everything had finally stabilized again, after Satoru unexpectedly bonded with Kenji over a year before. Besides that, you knew it wouldn’t be that much longer before you and the rest of your friend group all had dragons of your own, and the idea excited you.
Tumblr media
It had barely been a week since the new year’s festival when you felt something change in the air of the settlement. You weren’t entirely sure what it was at first, but you quickly learned that there was apparently another boy that had bonded with a single color dragon before the age of ten, much like Satoru had a year before. There was talk around the settlement for days, rumors spoken in hushed tones when the adults thought the children couldn’t hear, but it was impossible to miss all the murmurings.
“He’s from a little village hours from here.”
“He’s not even part of a clan.”
“I heard the Gojos bought him and are bringing him here to hold him captive.”
“They can’t take the risk of him growing strong enough to challenge the heir, they have to keep him on a tight leash.”
“You don’t think they’d bring him here just to kill him, do you?”
“It depends how much of a threat he poses, I guess.”
With such dark statements being thrown around so casually – even if only in hushed whispers – you couldn’t help but grow curious about the reality of the situation.
“Do you really think they bought him?” you asked your friends one day. You were dying to ask Satoru himself, since he would know for sure if his clan had bought the boy who’d bonded with a solid color dragon, but you hadn’t seen much of him lately.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Shoko sighed, rolling her eyes at you. “Why would they buy him? They have enough power just to take him if they really want to.”
Her words made your eyes widen with horror.
“Shoko,” Kento scolded her, a frown pinching his features together harshly. “Don’t say things like that, you’re scaring them!”
“But it’s true!” she insisted, only backing down and grumbling to herself about not wanting to lie when Utahime nudged her with her elbow.
Your curiosity only grew after that.
It was just a couple of days later when there was a flurry of excitement near the docks, and you rushed to see what all the fuss was about. You had to shove and weave your way between people’s legs in order to get a good look, but eventually you found yourself standing practically at the front of the crowd. You reached the spot just in time to see a boy about your age stumble off of a boat – obviously one of the finer sailing ships, owned by the Gojo clan – looking a bit green in the face; he’d probably been seasick on the journey. At first, you didn’t notice his dragon draped around his shoulders like a pelt because it so closely matched the color of his hair. When it lifted its head from his shoulder, though, you almost gasped, eyes wide as you stared. It looked so much like Satoru’s dragon it was almost uncanny, though this one was as dark as Satoru’s was light.
The boy glanced around as he was urged forward, clearly unsettled by the number of people gathered to gawk at him, as if he were some sort of novelty. His eyes paused for a moment as they met yours, and even with as fascinated as you were by his arrival, you managed to smile at him and give him a small wave. The gesture seemed to fluster him, and he lifted his hand slightly to return the wave before he was hurried off, one of the men escorting him scolding all the onlookers and telling them to go home.
You scampered off before you could get caught and further chastised, but your curiosity was far from sated. He had only just arrived, and already you wanted to see this boy again, and to learn as much about him as you could. That wasn’t so bad, was it?
Tumblr media
Apparently it was bad.
“I just don’t understand why we can’t see him!” you complained to Shoko, after being turned away from the Gojo estate once again. “He’s our age, just like Satoru is. I just wanna say hi.”
“Maybe it’s because we don’t have our dragons yet,” she suggested.
You wrinkled your nose. “Why would that matter?”
“Because it means we’re not grown up enough, or something. I don’t know.” She kicked a pebble a foot or so down the path as you walked together.
“Just because he has his dragon now doesn’t mean Satoru’s grown up,” you grumbled, kicking the pebble a little further down the path after you reached it.
The brunette hummed in agreement with your comment, but neither of you said anything else; even if Shoko wouldn’t say the words out loud, you knew she missed Satoru just like you did.
The two of you continued walking together in silence, taking turns kicking the little pebble as you went, only separating when you were called home by your respective parents. You waved goodbye to Shoko as she walked over to her mother, and as you turned and made your way back to your own parents, you felt less frustrated than you had when you’d first been turned away from the Gojo estate, because you had already made up your mind; you were going to get in to see those boys whether the Gojo clan wanted you to or not.
Tumblr media
You crept through your house as quietly as you could, taking great care to avoid the floorboards you knew would creak if you stepped on them as you made your way to the front door. Thankfully your father, as usual, had failed to lock it before turning in for the night, and you held your breath as you pulled it open, praying the hinges wouldn’t squeak and alert your parents to your escape.
Miraculously, they made no sound as you opened it just enough to slip through, closing it behind you just as silently. A smile crossed your face then, realizing that the first part of your plan had gone off without a hitch. You managed to stifle a shout of excitement, knowing that would only result in you getting caught, and instead turned away from the door, racing up the road and towards the Gojo estate.
As you drew closer to the estate, you slowed your movements, not wanting to give yourself away because you tripped over your own feet or a loose stone in the path. You tucked yourself a little further into the shadows, eyes locked on the guard by the front gates as you moved around to the side. Once you were sure you were out of his line of sight, you darted to walk against the wall itself, steps slow and careful; if you miscalculated your spot along the outside of the estate, you’d be in a world of trouble.
Just as you began to question your memory, you heard a familiar voice just up ahead, on the other side of the wall, and it brought a smile to your face.
“Kenji, your feet are cold, stop putting them on my neck!” Satoru’s whining eased the hurt of not being able to see him much anymore, and it also confirmed that you were exactly where you’d planned to end up.
Taking a step away from the wall, you turned to look at it, trying to find the best possible hand- and footholds on its regal yet weathered surface. It only took a moment to find them, and you immediately began to scale your way up, reaching the top in a lot less time than you had expected, and before you knew it your head was peeking over the top of the wall.
You didn’t get a chance to say anything before Satoru noticed you, as wretchedly observant as he was, and you thought his eyes were going to pop out of his head. He called your name incredulously, stepping off of his engawa and approaching the wall as if to confirm what he was seeing. “Is that really you?”
“Hi, Toru!” you replied, somehow managing to keep from shouting, a grin plastered across your face as you pulled yourself further up.
“How the hell did you get up there?” the white haired boy asked, though he was smiling now, too; he could tell you were up to some sort of mischief, and he was more than willing to be a part of it.
“I climbed,” you said bluntly, more focused on swinging one of your legs over the top of the wall so you could begin your descent. It was then that you noticed another figure, still seated on the engawa off to Satoru’s left, dark hair pulled back while an equally dark dragon curled around his shoulders, its yellow eyes glowing like fireflies in the dark. It occurred to you then that this was the boy you’d seen at the docks; the one that had been brought to the settlement to train alongside Satoru.
Excitement outweighed your rational thoughts then, and a beaming grin broke out across your face once again. “Hi!” you called to the boy, releasing the wall with one hand to wave at him excitedly. “I’m—”
Your introduction was cut short when you lost your balance, and you barely had time to register what was happening before you were hitting the ground, a rather undignified squawking sound escaping you just before you made impact with the dirt; you were vaguely aware of your head hitting the ground a little harder than the rest of your body, but not aware enough to realize it could be bad.
“Oh my god!” an unfamiliar voice shouted, obviously worried. The owner of the voice hurried over, and when you opened your eyes you saw two faces hovering above your own. “Are you okay? That looked like it hurt.” You realized the once-unfamiliar voice belonged to the boy from the docks, and it brought a small smile to your lips.
“It did hurt,” you answered after a moment, planting your hands on the ground beside you and pushing yourself to sit up. The sudden movement sent your vision spinning, and you felt yourself beginning to slump over before Satoru caught you.
“I can’t believe you fell like an idiot,” he said, though you thought you detected a hint of worry in his voice, as well, as he let you lean into him while he held you upright.
“Satoru-san!” the dark haired boy said, sounding scandalized that he would speak to you that way.
“What?” Satoru demanded, scowling at the other boy. “And I already told you not to be so formal when you talk to me, Suguru. It’s weird.”
Suguru. You turned the name over in your mind a few times, and you decided you liked it.
Suguru scowled back at Satoru for a moment, though his attention quickly drifted down to you again, worry furrowing his brow. “Should we take them to see someone?” he asked after a moment. “They hit the ground pretty hard, what if they’re hurt?”
You intended to tell the boys that you were fine, that it was no big deal and there was no need to worry, but as soon as you pulled yourself away from Satoru and tried to stand on your own, you doubled over again and promptly threw up your dinner, squeezing your eyes shut as your vision began to swim.
Satoru swore from somewhere off to your left, and he quickly but gently pulled you away from the mess you’d made on the ground, making sure you wouldn’t collapse into it.
“Yeah, we need to get someone,” he said, finally agreeing with Suguru. “Can you move?” he asked, looking down at you with a worried expression.
You stared up at him for a few long moments, trying to decide if he would believe you if you lied, but the harder you thought about it, the more your head started to throb. “...I don’t know,” you eventually said, words coming out a bit wobbly. “Definitely can’t walk.”
“I can carry you,” Suguru offered, and you whipped your head around to look at him so fast you thought you might be sick again.
The white haired boy seemed hesitant at first, but he also didn’t seem to want to waste time arguing about it. “Are you sure?”
Suguru nodded. “I don’t know my way around the house, it will be easier for me to carry them and follow you.”
Your friend looked down at you again, his features pinched together in a way you couldn’t recall ever seeing before, and it made you frown back up at him slightly.
“Okay,” Satoru agreed after a moment. “Okay, yeah, you’re right.”
As carefully as two nine year old boys could manage, Satoru helped Suguru gather you in his arms and lift you from the ground. Though you knew they were trying their best, you couldn’t help the small sounds that would escape you when you would get jostled a bit too hard, your head spinning so bad it made you feel nauseous.
Once Suguru had you secure in his arms and was on his feet, Satoru led the way into the house, navigating the halls with ease as he sought out the healer that spent most nights at the estate.
The movement was too much for you, your vision swimming with every step, your stomach doing flips with every turn, and you had to shut your eyes.
“I really think you should stay awake,” Suguru told you quietly, worry clear in his voice.
“Not falling asleep,” you insisted. “My eyes hurt an’ I feel dizzy, that’s all.”
You received no further argument or pushback, which you appreciated. Despite your promise that you weren’t falling asleep, though, it wasn’t long before the sounds of the boys searching for someone to look you over faded from your awareness and you slipped from the waking world.

Noble Blood - Chapter Three
i FINALLY finished this chapter!!! not that the wait was exceptionally long between chapters 2 & 3, i know, but there were at least four separate time i thought i was going to be done with this chapter and then realized i was not at a good stopping place. also what i originally planned for this chapter Did Not Happen, and now won't until at least chapter 4, maybe not even until chapter 5, so. hooray for me i guess. sigh. anyways, i hope you guys enjoy this chapter!
fic masterlist here | read on ao3 here | wc: ~5.3k | cw: gender neutral reader, satoru being a little shit as always, some angst (it's not bad tho)
Tumblr media
A few days after your visit to the Gojo estate, Satoru showed up in town again, grinning as he ran up to you, bundled up in a heavy coat and scarf. You couldn’t help but grin back, thrilled to see your friend out and about again.
“Hi, Satoru!” you greeted cheerfully, though you quickly had the breath knocked out of you when the boy practically tackled you with a hug, which you returned eagerly once you’d regained your bearings. “Where’s Kenji?” you added quietly, not sure if anyone else outside of the Gojo clan knew about the dragon, or if he was still meant to be a secret.
Satoru released you after you asked the question, glancing around for a moment to make sure no one was watching, before he loosened his scarf a bit.
Confused, you leaned in a bit closer, and you blinked in surprise when you saw a pair of blue eyes staring up at you from a white, scaly face. The hatchling made a little sound, about halfway between a chirp and a growl, then settled in closer to Satoru’s warmth and closed his eyes again.
“My parents wouldn’t let me leave without him, but they didn’t want anyone to see him yet,” Satoru explained. “Even if they hadn’t made me bring him I would have. He looked sad when I wasn’t holding him, and it made me sad, too.”
You nodded slightly, leaning back from your friend, opting to give him back his personal space, though he’d never been particularly keen on maintaining that distance from anyone – especially not his friends.
“We should go somewhere,” he said after a moment, shifting on his feet, looking as if he were about to take off running in a random direction just to see if you would follow.
“Like where?”
“I dunno. Maybe to Nanami-san’s bakery?”
“I don’t have any money. Do you?”
He checked his pockets, then frowned. “No.”
The two of you went back and forth like that for a little bit longer, neither of you able to come up with somewhere in town you could go that didn’t pose an issue; you didn’t have money for the bakery, Satoru rejected the idea of going to the library, and neither of you wanted to go to the observation deck in the middle of the day, when your odds of getting caught were much higher and there were no stars to look at.
Suddenly, your friend’s blue eyes lit up. “We should go to the beach!”
“Satoru, it’s freezing.”
He rolled his eyes at your words. “Not to get in the water, dummy. We can skip stones or something. Plus I’m bored just standing here.”
You hesitated for a moment, but you didn’t have a good reason to say no, so instead you gave a small shrug. “Alright,” you conceded. “To the beach.”
Satoru’s grin returned full force, and he grabbed your hand before taking off at a dead sprint towards the ocean.
Even knowing you were about to be dragged off to satisfy Satoru’s whim, you still stumbled over your own feet, and it took you a few seconds to catch yourself before you were able to really keep up with him. Adults called out for the two of you to watch out as you ran past, Satoru practically shoving people out of the way as he went, ignoring the human shouts and dragon chuffs as he pulled you along, and despite yourself, you giggled. It was nice to be doing something normal with Satoru again, even though you weren’t even sure what normal would look like going forward, after the teacher the Gojo clan head had sent for arrived in the settlement to help Satoru train Kenji.
Those thoughts were shoved aside as you stumbled to a halt on the beach, your friend releasing your hand to start searching for stones to try and skip across the unusually calm waters. You quickly followed his lead, walking a few steps away as you looked, eventually returning to your friend’s side with a small handful of smooth, round stones about the size of your palm.
As the two of you took turns skipping rocks, seeing who could get the most skips – Satoru was currently in the lead with six – you turned to watch him for a moment, unable to help but notice the way his fluffy, unruly white hair stuck out against the blue-grey of the ocean and the sky beginning to grow overcast. Thankfully, you looked away before he could catch you, but as you turned out to face the water once again, you noticed something you hadn’t before.
“Is that a ship?” you asked your friend, pointing at the shape quickly approaching from the distance.
Satoru frowned at your words, then followed your finger towards the horizon, looking a bit surprised when he spotted the shape. “I think it is,” he agreed.
“Should we tell someone?” You felt a bit uneasy, not entirely sure why a strange ship would be approaching the settlement with no sort of warning or announcement amongst the town.
The boy beside you seemed hesitant, an uneasy expression settling over his face, though his looked more disappointed than worried. “No,” he sighed after a moment. “I think I know why it’s here.”
“What?” you squawked. “Who is it? Why is it here?”
“I think it’s the teacher my parents sent for.”
You went completely still at his words, gaping at him in disbelief. “Didn’t your parents just send for him?” How could he be here so quickly?
“They probably told him it was urgent, or offered him a lot of money.” Satoru paused for a moment, then added, “Or both.”
“Does this mean you’ll be training all the time now?” Will I even see you anymore?
He finally turned and met your eyes again, still looking displeased by the whole situation. “We still have some time before the ship gets here,” he said, offering you a small smile. “I don’t have to go home yet, and if we hide before the ship is here we can spend a little more time together.” His gaze was hopeful, and you realized he was trying to cheer you up, while also avoiding your question. After a moment, you decided it wasn’t worth it to argue, and you nodded.
You skipped stones in silence after that, though your heart wasn’t in it anymore; you kept looking towards the boat, dread and sadness growing heavier and heavier in your gut the closer it got.
Once the boat was close enough that you could hear men’s voices carrying across the water, Satoru took your hand, and the two of you took off again, running back through town, looking for a place to hide. Before you could find one, though, you heard your father call out your name, and both you and Satoru nearly toppled over from how quickly you stopped.
Your father called your name again, and you glanced from him back to your friend, a pained look on your face; he knew as well as you did that you found disobeying your parents nearly impossible. He smiled at you and nodded, giving your hand a squeeze.
“I’ll see you again soon,” he promised. “I’m gonna tell you all about my new teacher. He’s probably an old man who can barely see and has a dragon that can’t fly.”
A little laugh escaped you before you could stop it, despite the fact that you were hesitant to leave his side. “Bye, Satoru,” you said softly, squeezing his hand in return before letting him go, calling back to your father as you ran to join him.
Tumblr media
Despite his assurance that he would see you soon, Satoru started coming around less and less often. You tried to hide how upset it made you to not be able to see him much, your other friends picked up on it easily.
Utahime started inviting you to take walks around the settlement with her. More often than not the two of you wound up at the library, huddled together in a corner, thankful for each other’s company and the peaceful atmosphere of the building. Most of the time, Utahime would find a book to read, and you would read over her shoulder. She read a lot of history books, which you initially found dry and boring, though occasionally the accounts of battles fought and dragons encountered would pique your interest. Your favorite she read was the diary of the last rider to ever bond with a metallic dragon, more than three hundred years before you were born. He was, unsurprisingly, a member of the Gojo clan, making him one of Satoru’s ancestors.
Shoko started inviting you out, as well, though her invitations were more practical than peaceful; she would ask if you wanted to help her gather herbs her parents would need to make the medicines they used in their clinic. You didn’t know as much as Shoko did about these things, but following her instructions on what to pick and what to avoid was easy enough. As you went on more and more of these trips with your friend, you began to pick up on a few things: willow bark for pain, valerian for help with sleep, yarrow tea for fever; you weren’t sure why you’d ever need to know any of this, since you weren’t going to become a healer, but Shoko insisted it was always good to know a little about a lot of things.
Kento even asked once if you wanted to spend time with him, pointing out that you seemed lonely, now that Satoru was spending more and more of his time at the Gojo estate. You had agreed, not knowing what to expect from your young but serious friend, and you were more than a little surprised when he took you back to his family’s bakery.
“My parents do all the actual baking,” Kento told you, as you hovered outside the kitchen, “but sometimes they need help with other things, like cutting shapes out of the cookie dough, or glazing the pastries once they cool.”
All you did was nod, still in awe of the scale of everything in and around the kitchen; you’d helped your parents in your own kitchen at home, of course, but you’d never seen bags of flour or sugar so big and heavy, though Kento’s father seemed to have no issue picking them up and carrying them around. Even the dragons had their own jobs to do: Kento’s father’s dragon – a small white and beige creature, who you learned was named Ginger – tended to the fires for the ovens, keeping the heat consistent and adjusting the temperature when necessary, which Kento’s mother’s dragon, Cinnamon, carried trays of finished goods from the kitchen to the display racks, every tray perfectly balanced, not so much as a wobble as she walked.
Your friend’s parents were incredibly kind, asking if you wanted to try and help with anything in the kitchen, but you had turned them down, not wanting to get under their feet or be the reason anything got burnt.
Kento’s mother had offered you a gentle smile, nodding in understanding at your hesitance. “We need someone to cut out the cookies for us, if you’d like to help the kids with that,” she suggested, tilting her head towards where her son was rolling out cookie dough on a large table, Kokoro next to him with what you assumed were cookie cutters in her hands – one was a circle, the other a star.
“I can do that,” you agreed, sitting on the opposite side of the table from the Nanami siblings, watching them curiously.
“Can you put the cookies on the baking tray after Koro cuts them out?” Kento asked, and you couldn't help but smile at the way he shortened his sister’s name, since you rarely heard him do such a thing.
“I’m not good at that part,” the girl added, a slight frown on her lips.
“I’ll do my best,” you said, then watched as the pair cut the shapes out of cookie dough: Kokoro’s excitement to be cutting out star shapes was palpable, and you were a little surprised she didn’t overlap any cutouts with how close together she was making them.
Once you were sure your fingers wouldn’t accidentally fall victim to the little girl’s eager cutting, you carefully began to pick up the dough stars, laying them out on the tray that had been waiting on the table for the three of you. As you worked, you spared a glance over at Kento, and you had to stifle a laugh; some of his circles were fine, but a lot of them looked like they’d been overlapped and cut multiple times, leaving them oddly shaped and looking incomplete.
Before you could say anything, your blonde friend caught you looking. “They’re supposed to look like this,” he told you. “So they look like different phases of the moon. They’re for the New Year’s festival in a couple days.”
His words sobered you instantly, and the laugh you’d been holding back died in your throat. He was right, the annual New Year’s celebration was just a few days away, but the reminder made you realize just how much time had passed since you’d been able to spend any time with Satoru, and it made you sad.
The siblings noticed your change in demeanor right away, and Kokoro, as sweet as ever, rushed to cheer you up. “Everyone will be at the festival!” she said. “Everyone will be there and we’ll all have a lot of fun.”
“I’m sure Satoru will be there,” Kento added, offering you a slight smile before he finished cutting out the cookies.
You offered a weak smile in return, nodding silent as you returned to the task of putting the cookies on the baking tray. Though you tried not to show it, you were in a much more dejected mood the rest of the day.
Tumblr media
The last two days before the New Year’s festival flew by, and before you knew it, your mother was dressing you in a red kimono with little white fish on it and fussing with your hair like she always did, though this time you didn’t fight her or try to hurry her along at all.
You hovered around your parents for a while at the beginning of the festival, unsure of where Shoko and Utahime were, and knowing that the Nanami siblings would be at their parents’ booth, helping them sell the cookies and other pastries they’d spent the last few days preparing; you’d seen them for a few moments when your parents had stopped by the booth for cookies.
The festival wasn’t unpleasant in and of itself, but your mood had yet to recover from how low it had dropped since your separation from your best friend. After about half an hour of being your mother’s shadow, you heard a familiar voice call your name, and you whipped your head around, searching for the speaker.
“Satoru?” you called back, hoping you had actually heard him, and it wasn’t just your mind playing a cruel joke on you. Looking for a flash of white didn’t even help you this time, since so many people were wearing white, but thankfully you heard your name called again, and suddenly there he was, blue eyes flashing with relief when he caught sight of you.
“There you are!” he said, grinning as he raced up to you, his face flushed. He paused for a moment, looking up at your parents, giving them a slight bow in greeting. “Would it be alright if we walked around the festival together?” he asked, almost shockingly polite in that moment.
Your parents shared a look, though you could tell from the smiles on both of their faces that they were going to agree.
“Run along,” your father agreed, gesturing for you two to enjoy the festivities on your own.
“Try not to get into too much trouble, alright?” your mother added before you could run off.
Thanking them with a grin, Satoru took your hand and tugged you off in a different direction. “I didn’t want to tell your parents,” he said, leaning in a bit closer to make sure nobody else would hear him as he spoke. “But I’m not really supposed to be out here mingling with people.”
“You’re not?” you asked, glancing around, wondering if someone was already looking for your friend to drag him back to his family.
Satoru shook his head. “No, I’m not. I think my parents wanted to make a big deal out of announcing my bond with Kenji tonight, but I don’t want to be part of it.”
“You don’t?” you felt a bit stupid for asking such simpleminded questions, but his words baffled you; normally Satoru loved to brag when he was the first to get or accomplish something, so the fact that he wasn’t jumping at the chance to rub it in everyone’s faces that he, at the young age of only eight years old, had bonded with his dragon seemed a little odd.
“No,” he said. “Kenji is my dragon, not anyone else’s. Nobody else will ever train him, or have much of anything to do with raising and taking care of him. Why should it matter if everyone else knows?”
You were silent for a moment, blinking in surprise at his words. “That is… surprisingly grown up of you,” you said eventually, and you couldn’t help but giggle softly at the look he shot you.
“You don’t need to sound so shocked about it,” he groused, but you could tell he was fighting a smile of his own. He opened his mouth, presumably to insist he was Very Mature, Actually, but before he could say anything, someone started calling out for him.
“Satoru!” The voice was unfamiliar to you, somewhat gruff and clearly frustrated, and you couldn’t yet see who it belonged to.
Satoru’s hand tightened around your own, and he gave you a mischievous grin. “Run,” he said, and the two of you instantly started sprinting away from the voice, ducking and weaving between other townspeople as you went.
“Who are we running from?” you asked breathlessly, as Satoru tugged you around the corner of a building, both of you crouching low to try and stay out of sight.
“Yaga-sensei,” your friend answered, looking around to make sure you hadn’t been spotted. “He’s the teacher my parents sent for after I bonded with Kenji.” He finally turned to look at you then, a slight scowl on his face. “He’s bossy and he’s boring. I don’t like him.”
Even having never met the man, you also felt a sort of resentment towards him; after he had arrived in the settlement, Satoru had been secluded up in the Gojo estate, unable to leave and spend time with his friends the way he used to.
You stood there for a few moments longer, still catching your breath, when you realized something. “Do you have Kenji?” you asked, brows furrowed slightly.
Before Satoru could say anything, you heard a small chirping noise, and just a second later, Kenji’s head popped out of the boy’s sleeve, right by where your hands were still joined.
“You’re not supposed to be down there!” Satoru exclaimed, releasing your hand and scolding his dragon for causing problems.
Stifling your laughter proved a challenge as you watched your friend try to negotiate his dragon out of his sleeve so that Satoru could get Kenji settled closer to his own body heat. Kenji was as hesitant to follow orders as his rider, and almost seemed to backtalk Satoru every time the boy spoke to him.
“Fine!” Satoru said after a bit, clearly feeling exasperated as he stared at his dragon. “Fine. I’ll make sure to share my desserts with you. Now will you please come down from there before that crazy old man finds us?”
“You should really be more respectful when talking about your teachers.”
You nearly jumped out of your skin when you heard the voice from behind you, and you half-hid behind your friend as you looked up to get a proper look at the speaker.
He was tall, with a fair amount of dark hair on his head, styled to be slightly spiky, and he wore a pair of tinted lenses, which you thought was odd, since it was growing dark outside; all that to say, he looked nothing like the old men who lived in the settlement. He had his arms crossed over his chest as he stared down at you and Satoru, a displeased and unimpressed look on his face.
“Satoru,” the man began, though your friend cut him off before he could continue.
“Yaga-sensei,” Satoru retorted, mimicking his teacher’s facial expression and stance – as well as he could with Kenji climbing out of his sleeve, anyways.
“You were supposed to stay with your parents and I,” Yaga said, exasperation already evident in his voice.
“Was I?” Satoru asked, playing innocent. “I didn’t know that.”
“We told you no less than four times that you were not to go running off.”
“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.”
As teacher and student continued to bicker back and forth, you watched Kenji as finally crawled completely out of Satoru’s sleeve, and began to make his way up his arm to the neck of his kimono. Instead of tucking himself close to your friend’s body heat again, though, the dragon turned and looked at you, a curious little chirping noise coming from his lips as he altered his course, taking unsteady steps onto the sleeve of your kimono, where you were hiding behind and clinging to Satoru.
You stared, wide-eyed, as the little creature made his way up your arm, across your shoulder, and eventually draped himself across the back of your neck, like a tiny, reptilian scarf. A shiver ran down your spine as he settled his scales against your skin; he was cold, so cold you weren’t sure how he was still able to move around with relative ease.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
Yaga’s voice was much closer than it was before, and you were startled when you looked up to see him staring down at you.
“What I’m— huh?” you stammered, unsure what he could possibly be talking about.
“You’re trying to steal Satoru’s dragon,” he said. “You’re not as sneaky as you might think.”
Your eyes went wide with panic. “N-No! I’m not— I would never take Kenji from Satoru!” you insisted. “He climbed up here by himself, and I didn’t want to scare him or knock him on the ground by moving too suddenly.”
“He climbed on you?” Satoru asked, eyes wide; he looked absolutely fascinated. “Where is he?”
“Y-Yeah, he’s laying on my neck… I don’t understand what the big deal is, I figured he was just trying to get warm.” Your brows furrowed as you looked at your friend, unsure about why he was acting like it was such a big deal.
“White dragons have ice powers when they grow up,” Yaga explained. “They’re built to handle cool temperatures. They rarely need to be kept warm, even as hatchlings.”
“And Kenji doesn’t let anyone touch him but me,” Satoru added, grinning widely at you now, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
Still confused by everything that was happening, you angled your head to try and see Kenji, where he had draped himself around your neck. He met your eyes steadily, his little head tilted slightly to the side, as if he were waiting for you to say something to him. You stared dumbly for a moment, then asked, “Are you comfy?”
Not being as familiar with Kenji as Satoru was, you weren’t entirely sure what his mannerisms meant, but the dragon seemed almost…amused? The sound he made sort of resembled a laugh, and he settled back down afterwards.
“Satoru,” you asked, turning back to your friend, completely bewildered. “What is happening right now?”
“No idea!” he replied cheerfully. “But Kenji likes you, which is good. He doesn’t like anyone else but me.”
You nodded slightly, glancing briefly over at Yaga, before a thought occurred to you. “Do you think your parents would let me meet the other hatchling?” you asked, feeling hope flicker to life inside your chest. “If they knew that Kenji was friendly with me, maybe that means that I need to meet—”
“It never hatched,” Yaga cut in, and you felt almost as if you’d been struck.
“What?”
“The second egg never hatched,” Satoru elaborated, much more gently than his surly teacher. “Nobody’s sure why, but Kenji was the only hatchling from that clutch.”
All of the hope and excitement left your body at the words, and you felt yourself deflating; the odds were slim that the Gojo clan ever would have let you meet Kenji’s nestmate in the first place, and you had no delusions of being as special or important as Satoru, so even if you had been able to meet the hatchling, it was unlikely you would have bonded with it anyways. But, still, it hurt to have those hopes smothered so quickly.
“I’m sorry,” Satoru said quietly, noticing the disappointment written clear across your face. He stepped in a bit closer, taking your hand again and giving it a gentle squeeze; a squeeze you half-heartedly returned.
“Not your fault,” you sighed, only giving yourself a moment to feel crestfallen, before shaking yourself of the gloom; there was still a festival to enjoy, after all.
“Satoru,” Yaga said, “you’ll be coming with me, and returning to sit with your parents before the announcement is made.”
“I will be doing no such thing, Yaga-sensei.” Satoru’s grip on your hand tightened slightly as he spoke, and he stared his teacher dead in the eyes as he defied them.
“Satoru—”
“I have told you, and my parents, and everyone on the estate who could hear me, that I have no desire to be involved in some silly announcement that doesn’t even benefit anyone. It just makes my parents feel more important, and it makes everyone else in the settlement jealous. It’s stupid. Whether I have my dragon yet and how I choose to train that dragon isn’t anyone else’s business.”
Yaga continued to stare your friend down for several long moments; you knew Satoru well enough to know he wouldn’t back down, and if Yaga were to force him to go back to his parents, Satoru would scream and thrash and bite and cause such a scene that it would embarrass his parents so deeply that no announcement of their son bonding with his dragon at such a young age would be able to make up for it.
Apparently coming to the same conclusion, Yaga sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose for a moment. “Fine, I won’t force you to come back. Just promise me you won’t cause any problems?”
Satoru exchanged a mischievous look with you before turning back to his teacher. “I will try my best.”
Yaga, looking thoroughly unconvinced by Satoru’s answer, let out a long, slow breath through his nose, as if holding back some sort of remark. Then, with one last glance at you with Kenji around your neck, he turned and walked away, presumably back to where Satoru’s parents were waiting for their son to be returned to them.
“I don’t think he likes me,” you told Satoru, after you were sure the older man was out of earshot.
“I don’t think he likes me either,” he replied; you found his comment oddly reassuring, and you laughed.
“Not exactly what I thought you’d say to make me feel better.”
Satoru turned to face you then, a slightly quizzical look on his face. “Who cares if that old man likes you or not? He’s not your teacher. Besides,” he added, his eyes darting to his dragon. “Kenji likes you, and that’s a much bigger deal.” He did genuinely seem thrilled that his dragon was fond of you, though you still weren’t certain as to why. You didn’t want to crush his excitement, though, so you decided not to push it.
“Yeah,” you agreed, unable to help but return your friend’s contagious smile. “I guess that is pretty cool.”
“Come on,” Satoru said after a moment, tugging you along behind him as he made his way back to the festival. “I want to find Utahime and beat her at that ring toss game again.”
Another laugh escaped you then, and you hurried after him as you remembered the last new year’s festival; there had been a ring toss game set up, and the prize for winning was a large paper lantern, expertly crafted and painted to resemble a goldfish. Utahime and Shoko had spent all their money trying and failing to win the lantern, but Satoru had won first try, and then several more rounds after that. He’d selected the lantern as his prize, grinning at Utahime in a way that she had taken as smug, and she had stormed off with tears in her eyes. He’d looked so confused when Shoko had hurried after your friend to comfort her, shooting Satoru a glare.
“Why is she upset?” he’d asked you.
“Because you won the prize she wanted.”
“...Oh,” he’d said after a moment, though he’d still looked a little confused. “I was going to give it to her,” he’d explained. “I just thought the game was fun, I didn’t actually want any of the prizes.”
It had taken a bit of hunting, but eventually the two of you had been able to find Shoko consoling Utahime behind one of the stalls selling sparklers, and Satoru had explained everything to the other girl.
“I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings, Hime.”
She’d just stared at him for a moment, slack-jawed, holding the goldfish lantern in her hands. “It’s okay,” she’d eventually managed to say, the tips of her ears going red. “Thank you for winning the lantern for me.”
You’d seen that same goldfish lantern in her bedroom, proudly displayed on her bedside table, the last time you’d gone to visit her.
The sound of your friends’ voices drew you out of your reminiscing, and you grinned when you spotted Shoko and Utahime already standing in front of the ring toss stall. There were no lanterns as prizes this year, but there was a small, hand-painted wall hanging of exotic flowers that Shoko seemed to have her eye on. The girls were hesitant to play at first, but were easily convinced when Satoru promised to pay for everybody.
As your other two friends stepped forward to get their rings for the first round, you held Satoru back just long enough to put Kenji back around his neck, rather than your own; you didn’t want to cause any issues with his family if you got caught with a dragon that wasn’t yours.
Satoru’s eyes sparkled fondly as he smiled at you, adjusting the neck of his kimono and allowing Kenji to settle close to his body heat again. “Thanks,” he said quietly, then took your hand and tugged you to stand alongside Shoko and Utahime, getting your own rings and tossing them at the bottles stacked at various heights, trying to land enough of them to win a prize.
By the end of the night, all four of you were bickering and laughing just like always, and it was easy to forget that so much had already changed in such a short period of time. After tonight, Satoru would go back to his constant lessons with Yaga, and he would still be unable to come and spend time with your friend group like he used to, but tonight, none of that mattered. Tonight, you were going to work together to win that poster for Shoko.
