Now you're diving off Catalina--seriously
WITH THE CATALINA DIVING CLOWDER IN THE WATERS OF ISTHMUS COVE, SANTA CATALINA ISLAND, CA: Leave it to the Catalina Diving Clowder to suggest that yours truly, and my compadre Huckleberry Hound even, go diving with same on the south side of the Isthmus of Catalina Island--otherwise known as Two Harbors. And more specifically, Isthmus Cove.
Which, as the members of the Diving Clowder will tell you almost to a queen, is perhaps their single most favourite diving locale on The Magic Isle. Enchantment somehow reigning most wondrous, with the added attraction of a shipwreck in the bargain, as in the Chinese junk Ningpo, burning as it did to the water line during a 1911 movie shoot. But what makes this particular spot the Diving Clowder's favourite such, at least to hear Jayne explain it, can't exactly be put into words; it needs to be seriously experienced.
Rock reefs, kelp forests, seaweed, playful marine life, such must be in abundance at Catalina's Isthmus ... and just be thankful sharks avoided the area this particular occasion. Even Jabberjaw, if you know whom I speak of.
Somehow, "Bubbles," ever-spritzy leader of the Diving Clowder and its diving expeditions, perhaps had the best explanation in the pre-dive briefing: "The magic they speak of about Catalina also happens to be abroad underwater--and to some, it seems mysterious, almost waiting to be discovered."
"Yet," Huckleberry Hound remarked, "whoever named the Italian Gardens [a rock reef with quite the marine life on the North Side of Catalina between Two Harbors and Avalon] must have had some sort of imagination in the diving arena!"
"Though I should admit," Lola remarked, "that for years, about the only way many could see Catalina's underwater side was by way of glass-bottom boats."
"How right you are, gals," was all Huck could add, remarking on the side that he was probably on a Catalina glass-bottom excursion some years before.
"Still," "Bubbles" added, "you haven't really seen Catalina until you see a bit of its underwater side. And we can relate from experiences."
"Not to mention our videos," Jessamaine chimed in.
And you can't help but be amazed. Seriously. Even Top Cat's clowder, I understand, can't help but fall head over heels for Catalina's underwater side.

Idk how to say this well but reading Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World is like changing my brain chemistry.
It's the sequel to Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, and I need you to know that both books are not fantasy, they're just about two gay mexican-american teenage boys in the 80s. The titles are poetic descriptions of the main character's journey through discovering, accepting, and walking in his sexuality.
And I'm begging you to read them for a couple of really beautiful points:
1. The cultural aspects of it all; the poetic descriptions of love and intimacy that you don't commonly see from monolingual english writers, the involvement and importance of family and community in these journeys (less individualistic), and the dialogue these characters have about ethnic identity.
2. The historical aspects of it; the backdrop of the AIDS pandemic and how it affects the characters, their families, and the other connections they end up making from the loving families of other people who have died... and how it plays into them supporting the main characters, even in short term interactions.
Like I'm gonna be real with you, it's a lovely piece of queer literature and a really sweet YA story. It also has the main character trying to figure out how to connect to other people in general, as he learns how to connect to himself.
And maybe it's because that's particularly relevant to me now, but I think if I'd read these books earlier in life they would have saved me a lot of pain.

The woman whose son died of aids giving Aristotle and Dante a painting saying they can share it for their whole lives really has me melting in a little puddle of sad. She sees these two boys so in love and I imagine she sees her son in them and I know shes silently hoping they will live longer than her son. The painting is like a blessing not just from a stranger but from a mother who so clearly loves her son and to the life he could have lived. I'm not okay right now

Postcards from Snagglepuss
So what's the attraction, the pull even, of Catalina?
AVALON, SANTA CATALINA ISLAND, CA: And to think it all started a few years back in working a Character Convocation on short notice around the Avalon Harbour Underwater Cleanup ... which had Peter Potamus and Lippy the Lion unearthing an iron bedframe from the bottom of Avalon Bay, among other things!
Yet for some reason, Peter Potamus (and none other than) decided to send his Magic Divers (and guests) to Avalon to help out in the annual Underwater Cleanup of Avalon Bay, serving as its main boat harbour. Which is also the only day in the year divers are permitted in Avalon Bay, to begin with, though "Bubbles," with the Catalina Diving Clowder, likes to note where local youngsters were fond of diving for coin tossed overboard as the Great White Steamers of yore, as in the SS Avalon and SS Catalina, docked in Avalon coming over from the mainland, San Pedro even ...
But at any rate, yours truly and Huckleberry Hound are gathered at an impromptu hospitality room which the Catalina Diving Clowder has set up at their quarters on the hills overlooking Avalon for as much us fellow Hanna-Barbera Funtastics as other divers joining in the Underwater Cleanup. And while the former may not quite be the Laff-A-Lympics teams of yore (as in the Yogi Yahooeys, Scooby Doobys and Really Rottens), in the Magic Divers, the Divin' Wolf Pups, the Catalina Diving Clowder--and even Top Cat's clowder--such funtastic interest in diving is represented.
"Is it any wonder 'cat' is the first name in Catalina?" as the Diving Clowder's Jessamaine forever reminds us. Yet a couple evenings ahead of the Avalon Bay Underwater Cleanup, the talk is about as much Catalina as diving. And when the Hair Bear Bunch brought up their diving escapades following their mating season road trip orgies in among the lakes of the North Woods, the applause couldn't have been heartier or more raucous over some of the Diving Clowder's celebrated Dungeness crab bisque--doubtless explaining the aroma of the salt water premeating the kitchen.
And the Diving Clowder's members are sworn to secrecy as to the recipe for the bisque.
What was equally amusing and fascinating was the presence of Bon-Bon and Ding-a-Ling, those Divin' Wolf Pups giving the whole ideal of the "sea wolf" new meaning, as if Bon-Bon's uncle, the celebrated Loopy De Loop, or Ding's mentor, Hokey Wolf--not to mention the rather raucous and snarky Mildew Wolf--weren't sea wolves enow. And to learn that Bon-Bon and Ding-a-Ling would also be part of the harbour cleanup crew, perhaps the youngest divers there ever once the cleanup is underway!
As Hokey Wolf, more or less the "alpha male" of the Three Wolves dive crew, explained it to me strolling through Beautiful Downtown Avalon the other evening, "Snag, believe you me, how much more interesting can diving get when there's a trio of wolves like us fond of SCUBA!"
"And it gets even more interesting," saith I to Hokey, "when you learn how Bon-Bon as much as Ding-a-Ling got fascinated about diving in the first place!"
"You were talking about me, Snagglepuss, just now?" exclaimed Ding.
"Affirmative."
"It was at a lupine pup camp up near the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota some years ago ... and it was more or less on a dare from one of the older campers; he thought the lake was somewhat close to maybe 50 to a hundred feet deep, and wondered if any of the wolves would dive to the bottom ... and I stepped up to the challenge."
"So, Ding," Hokey asked. "how deep did it get exactly?"
"Closer to 30 feet. But at any rate, one of the counsellors would give me some pointers on diving ..."
"And, in time, you came into this wolf's life, no doubt!"
"Hokey is MY HERO!!!" as Ding was quick to exclaim in laid-back manner, pointing at his mentor with thumb.
And there's obviously more where this came from ...

all i want is to talk to someone in the way they talk in the Aristotle and Dante books. is that too much to ask?
all i want is not to hear 'you are seventeen stop talking like you are seventy' is that too much to ask?
all i want is not to hear "stop thinking so much its not that hard" very time i share my doubts. is that too much to ask?
all i want is to hear 'i love your brain and the way it thinks'. is that too much to ask?
