LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown Round 1, Wave 1, Poll 16
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A character being totally canon LGBTQ+ and disabled was not required to be in this competition. Please check qualifications and propaganda before asking why a character is included.
Check out the other polls in this wave here.
Xue Xian- Copper Coins / Tong Qian Kan Shi
Qualifications:
Protagonist of a danmei (Chinese BL) webnovel, in committed relationship with a man by the end of the story. Due to pre-canon injury, he is paraplegic for most of the story, though he slowly recovers his mobility during the course of it by returning his stolen body parts (it may make more sense in context: hes an immortal dragon).
Propaganda:
In short: paraplegic gay dragon :D Longer version: An immortal dragon paralyzed from waist down and stuck in the mortal world after someone attacked him and made off with half his body (dragon body parts all have uses in magic or medicine). Meets an amnesiac monk and they end up going on adventure together to recover lost memories (the monk) and lost body parts (the dragon). Their dynamic is significant annoyances to lovers <3 One interesting detail: though Xue Xian can change forms, his paraplegia remains in all of them, whether he is a paper doll, a human, a big noodle, a smol noodle... (yeah he has big & small dragon forms. that time he turned into a smol noodle and wrapped himself around his future bf's wrist lives in my brain rent-free tbh) Significant part of his drive to recover his stolen bones is to be able to fly again, btw, in his true (big dragon) form. ...To make sure I'm not misleading anyone: he does recover full mobility by the end of the story, BUT his disability is a very significant part of the novel.
Zuko-Avatar: The Last Airbender
Qualifications:
Zuko is sight impaired and has PTSD. Zuko is bisexual.
Propaganda:
Zuko is sight impaired and has PTSD. Zuko isn't queer in canon to my knowledge.

sorry but saying that the accessibility needs of mentally disabled people are just preferences or about "comfort" is blatantly incorrect. if i can't enter a building because the bright lights and loud noises would send me into a meltdown, then i can't enter the building, and that's not less important than me not being able to enter a building because it's not wheelchair accessible. if you genuinely think that mentally disabled people aren't really struggling, and that it's okay to mock their very real concerns, then that just shows that you've been refusing to listen to their experiences. do better or shut the fuck up.

Valetudicus
Tumblr media
A term for when your physical disability affects/is intertwined with a part of your queer identity. It may also be a part of your queer identity on its own.
There is a lot of ways that one may feel this connection, and while not everyone will experience the same feeling, there are many disabled queer beings that feel this in one way or another.
For example: one who is valetudicus may find their gender and/or orientation being connected with symptoms of their physical disability, another who is valetudicus may feel that the treatment of physical disabled beings in the queer community is further alienating, thus making one wish to label their experience.
The only requirements for one to be able to identify with/as valetudicus is that one is physically disabled and queer in some form.
How do you coin your own subterm of valetudicus?
Easy! Just link to this post or tag me (or don't! I just think it will be easier for the sake of your definitions) and either add a prefix/word to the term or a separate word in front. This is a term that can apply to any physical disabilities and if you would feel more comfortable creating a microlabel, I encourage you strongly to do so!
You may also request that I make a subterm!
Etymology of this word:
Valetudo : Latin for health; a word that can roughly translate to "disability" or as a description of one's health in general.
-icus : a Latin suffix used to mean connected with/to, relating to, to come from.
*The queerness of this identity is implied and thus not included in the word*
So sorry this took me so long!!! Ironically, I am very behind on requests due to a lack of spoons. Catching up now!

disabledplurid
A plurid in which the system collectively identify as disabled, even if not all of the members of the system see themselves as affected by disability. While this would involve the system overall experiencing disability in this life, the following might keep all system members from identifying with that: -some members have only fronted at times when the system wasn't experiencing symptoms of their disability -some members display or experience fewer symptoms than others -some members are symptom neutralizers who do not have symptoms of the disability in question at all -some members are in denial that their condition "counts" as a disability but accept that other members of the system see themselves as disabled However, this can be for any reason.
[This post has no DNI other than not to involve it in discourse, mockery, or other harassment]

“How do I be more assessable for screen readers, people with dyslexia and people who need help with understanding posts?”
When writing plain text translations. Don’t color the words. Don’t use typing quirks. Don’t use fancy symbols or fonts. And don’t spam letters or numbers. Be simple like this post is.
If you want to be more accessible without making plain text versions. Then don’t use fonts or multiple fancy symbols. Both break screen readers, some skip over them meaning it isn’t read out. While some fonts and symbols cause the screen reader to glitch and make really uncomfortable noises at the user. It can be really overwhelming trying to understand a post if either is happening. Don’t change the color of your words. Changing the colors can cause people with dyslexia to skip or misread them. Some colours are also really hard to read if bright or really pale.
“Well what if I don’t want to translate my typing quirks or fonts? It’s my page”
Then don’t be surprised if you don’t get as much traction with posts. People who can’t understand a post isn’t likely to reblog, like, or follow you. Yes there are multiple accounts dedicated to adding translations and image IDs, but they won’t always be able to keep up. Nor can they spend all day going through hundreds of accounts to translate. Make it easier for both translators and people who need those translations. If you don’t care about being accessible that isn’t a flex. It just means you don’t care for people with visual disabilities. Theres so many small ways to help make your account easier for others. If you try, or care about trying. That alone makes a large difference. Even if you can’t do everything.
