tracking love
daryldixonxfem!reader
summary: Daryl is reluctant to admit his pretty much obvious feelings for you, so you decide it is time to give him a little push.
word count: 2,4k.
warnings: jealousy, past trauma, walkers, a bit of gore (what's to expect from a twd fanfic?), etc. (not proofread, yeah, again, sorry :/)
requested: by @matilda4eve, hope you like it, lovely!

As you ran your fingers over the rough skin and traced the shape of the marks on Daryl's back, you couldn't help but feel a pang of sorrow for him. You knew that those scars would always be a reminder to him of the pain and suffering he had endured during his childhood. The physical marks may have healed, but the emotional wounds they represented were still raw and painful.
Being able to see the most intimate part of him made you feel special as if he trusted you with a part of himself that he doesn't usually share with others. You knew that Daryl was not one to let other people stir his past memories, so his vulnerability with you made you feel even more honored.
You caught him pulling his shirt off his torso over his head. He didn't mean for you to discover what his clothes hid, but he had forgotten to close the door. It didn't bother him that you now knew the harshest fragments of his past, unearthing the wounds he had concealed for so long. In fact, you were the only one he didn't mind seeing him like this.
The day you met Daryl, a few months ago, you were not in the cheerful and beaming mood he usually finds you in whenever he spots you somewhere in Alexandria. Time had passed over your clothes, leaving them worn-out and mucky.
You knew better than to trust a stranger. You knew better than to go with a man you didn’t know to a place you couldn’t prove existent. He promised a safe place, food, clean clothes… damn, he even promised hot water, so your eagerness to survive took over your sensible judgment. If your parents were still walking between the living, they would surely be disappointed on you for accepting his proposal.
"Who did this to you?" you asked the man, gently approaching him as you returned to the present moment.
You sat on the bed beside him, close enough to feel his body heat but at an acceptable distance so as not to make him feel more vulnerable than he already was.
“Not everyone has a loving father,” his head down as he confessed, hair falling over his face. “It was Merle before he went away from home, and then…” his words faded in the air.
As he uttered those words, the message he was trying to convey became crystal clear. The unspoken implications behind his statement were evident and left no room for doubt. His body language, tone of voice, and choice of words all pointed to a deeper meaning that was waiting to be uncovered.

“Stop creeping up on her and go talk to her, Dixon,” Carol spoke, startling Daryl who had been staring at you for a while.
The archer let out a grunt in response. It was evident from the way he tightened his grip on the crossbow strap that he was deep in thought and going through a myriad of emotions.
"What's the point? I ain’t got nothing to tell her,” he said, his voice laced with frustration and self-doubt.
The scene in front of Daryl had recently become the norm. You stood at ease next to Spencer, whose jokes made you giggle foolishly. As you leaned in to fix Spencer's jacket, your fingers brushed against his chest while he ogled you.
Daryl felt a pang of jealousy shoot through him, but he couldn't quite understand why. After you placed the flower Spencer gave you in his shirt pocket, Daryl knew he had to do something, but he couldn’t find the courage to act.
He thought back to the times when he had stood by and watched as others took what he wanted. He remembered the time when Merle had stolen his last can of food, and he had silently accepted it because he couldn't bring himself to stand up for himself. He didn't want to make the same mistake again, but he didn't know how to go about it either.
"Morning, Daryl," you greeted your friend as you passed by him after saying goodbye to the son of the Alexandria leader.
Daryl hummed in response, nodding his head in greeting. He watched as you walked away, feeling a mix of emotions. He felt happy to have seen you, but at the same time, he was disappointed with himself for not being able to talk to you. He knew he had to do something soon before he lost the chance to be with you forever.
"God, you're a lost cause," Carol said as she walked away, leaving Daryl alone with his thoughts.

As you crouched down to examine the tracks on the muck, you couldn't help but feel the weight of the warm sun on your back. The sun's intensity was beautifully diminished by the swaying leaves of the trees above, creating a picturesque scene.
You and Daryl, your trusty guide, were trying to follow the trail left behind by an animal, most likely a deer, as Daryl stated the moment he saw the marks. The task at hand required your careful attention to detail, as you scrutinized every inch of the muddy ground before you, scanning for any sign of the animal's presence.
Even thought you were not lacking in food in Alexandria, fresh, newly hunted meat tasted way better than the canned pigswill you had survived on for months before the archer found you.
Daryl was known to be a solitary hunter, preferring to venture into the wilderness on his own. However, this time, he had extended an invitation for you to join him on his hunting excursion. It was an unexpected offer, especially since you weren't exactly the best hunter out there. But you had learned a thing or two from Daryl, and that was enough to convince him to take you along.
You had always been fascinated by Daryl's hunting skills. He seemed to have a natural instinct for tracking and had a keen eye for detail. You had watched him in action on several occasions, observing his every move and trying to learn as much as you could. It was evident that he enjoyed the solitude that came with hunting, but he had never turned down your requests to tag along.
As you made your way through the woods, you couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. The rustling leaves underfoot, the chirping birds overhead, and the fresh scent of nature all around you added to the thrill of the hunt. You felt a sense of gratitude for this opportunity to learn from Daryl and experience the wilderness in a way you never had before.
Despite your lack of experience, you felt confident under Daryl's guidance. He was patient with you, taking the time to explain the intricacies of tracking and spotting signs of animal activity. You were amazed by his ability to read the environment and anticipate the movements of the creatures around you.
This was not your first time hunting with Daryl, and each time you went out, you learned something new. You were grateful for his willingness to teach you and his patience with your mistakes. It was clear that he enjoyed sharing his knowledge with you, and that made the experience even more special.
"Ya see that?" Daryl asked, pointing to the ground where the deer had passed.
You looked down, trying to figure out what he was referring to. As you examined the tracks more closely, you noticed that they were becoming progressively closer to one another. It seemed as though the deer was moving slower, perhaps grazing on vegetation nearby. You both crouched down to get a better look and to study the tracks more closely. You began to notice other signs as well, such as broken twigs and trampled bushes, just as Daryl had thaught you, indicating that the deer had been in the area for some time.
Daryl whispered, "The damn beast's gotta be close, grazin’ somewhere near here."
You both continued to follow the tracks, scanning the surrounding area for any signs of the deer. The anticipation grew with each step as you both wondered if you were getting closer to your prey or if it had somehow eluded you.
As you were about to propose going back to Alexandria seeing as the trip seemed unavailing, you heard a rustling in the bushes nearby, causing you both to freeze in your tracks. You could feel your heart racing as you waited for the deer to reveal itself.
With lightning speed, Daryl raised his crossbow and aimed it in the direction of the sound. You held your breath, waiting for the shot to ring out. After a few moments of silence, Daryl lowered his weapon and turned to you with a subtle yet blissful smile on his face.
"We got 'em," he said, his voice a mix of excitement and pride.
You both made your way over to the bushes where the deer had been hiding. As you approached, you could see the animal's head peeking out from behind the leaves. Daryl approached the deer slowly, his crossbow still at the ready. With a quick and precise shot, he took down the animal, ending its life almost instantly.
“Watch out!” the archer’s hasty, blaring voice startled you.
You pivoted on your feet abruptly, your heart pounding with fear and concern. You felt a hard bump as you collided with a rotter, whose face was only a few centimeters away from yours. You could see the flaps of putrescent skin hanging off its face, and its teeth were bared in a menacing manner, as it chased after your un-decayed flesh. The sound of the walker's rasping breath and the stench of its decaying flesh filled your nostrils.
Daryl moved quickly, his hand flying to the roamer's head. With his other hand, he grabbed the roamer's neck and swiftly stabbed its skull with his hunting knife. The lifeless and putrid body collided with the ground straight away, and the sound of the impact reverberated through the dense woods.
In that moment, Daryl's hand shot out and gripped your biceps, pulling you along as he ran away from the swarm of walkers that were quickly closing in on your position. The frenzied sound of your yelling had caught their attention, drawing them towards you like moths to a flame. With your heart pounding in your chest, you had no choice but to run alongside Daryl, his steady grip on your arm providing a sense of reassurance in the midst of the chaos.
Once he considered that you were far enough away from the danger, he pushed both of you inside the void core of a broad chestnut oak. Not even once had you been this close to the archer, your bodies rubbing against each other as you struggled to fit within the hollow trunk. Although Daryl appeared relaxed, he was as uneasy as you were - what with the proximity of your bodies and the mildly oppressive atmosphere that had settled around you both since your friendship with Spencer began.
Daryl’s gaze, which had previously been analyzing your surrounding looking for any indicators of the walkers’ presence, drifted towards your face, slighty lowering his head to make eye contact. His hand remained on your upper arm, his rough yet delicate touch sending electricity sparks through your skin. Emboldened by your unexpected proximity, Daryl decided to voice the question that had lately been swirling in his mind.
“What’s with that Spencer guy?” Daryl asked, his eyes still fixed on you, a barely perceptive trace of disdain decorating his speech. “Ya’re always laughin’ with him and fixin’ his damn jacket.”
You raised an eyebrow at Daryl, a smirk playing on your lips. “Are you jealous, Dixon?”
“Nah,” Daryl huffed, his cheeks turning pink. “I ain’t jealous.”
“Sure seems like you are.”
He avoided your gaze, and the spark of courage he experienced that had seemed so convenient dissipated. The excessive amount of time you spend with Deanna’s son had a purpose, and the plan had successfully fulfilled your expectations, as it led to daryl’s emotions rising to the surface from the deep ocean of mysteries that flooded his mind.
You chuckled, shaking your head. “You’re so blind, Daryl. Can’t you see it?”
“See what?” Daryl asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
“That you’re the one I want,” you said. “I’ve been waiting for you to make a move.”
As you gazed into Daryl's eyes, your heart beat rapidly in your chest. The words had escaped your lips before you could even give them a second thought. But as soon as they were out, you knew that you meant every single one of them.
Daryl's eyes widened in shock, and for a moment, you were worried that you had overstepped your boundaries. But then, a flicker of hope crossed his face, and he leaned in closer to you. Your bodies were already pressed tightly together, but somehow, he managed to get even closer.
In that moment, it felt like time had slowed down, and the world around you two had faded away, leaving just the two of you standing there, lost in each other's eyes. You could feel his breath on your skin, and the warmth of his body as he leaned in even closer, making you feel safe and protected.
"Ya mean it?" he whispered, barely above a whisper, his eyes filled with hope and vulnerability.
You nodded, your heart swelling with emotion. "I do. I've been waiting for you, Daryl. I knew you liked me for a long time, even before Carol snitched on you."
Daryl looked down, fidgeting with the crossbow strap. “I didn’t know...I didn’t want to ruin our friendship.”
You stepped closer, reaching out to tilt his chin up so that you could see his eyes. “You won't ruin anything, Daryl. Our friendship means the world to me, and I know we can make this work. Just tell me how you feel.”
Daryl took a deep breath, his eyes locking with yours. “I love ya, Y/N. I can't imagine my life without ya in it. Every time I see ya with Spencer, I get this weird feelin’ in mah chest, and I know ya can be with whoever ya want and that this feelin’ is unfounded and it makes no sense…”
“It makes perfect sense to me,” you smiled, embracing him tightly. “I love you too, Daryl.”

Pairing: Daryl Dixon x reader.
Pronouns of y/n: she/her.
Back in Alexandria, when Aaron would go out with Eric instead of me, I helped Deanna with some things regarding the gates, the overall safety of the place and runs for supplies. This happened when I got lucky, because other times I either had to be a babysitter for the Anderson family, whenever there was a fight between the parents of the kids, or control Enid, who had a strong passion to put herself in danger. Even if I absolutely hated kids and it was extremely boring having to deal with them, I would have given anything, even my soul, to be with them rather than having my ass sat down on the hard floor of the barn, with a painful bump on my head.
My partner, once again, had an amazing idea: showing up with a bright smile to the survivors, after they went through one hell of a night. Once Maggie and Sasha, the ones we introduced to, brought us in, the faces of the group made clear from the very first moment that they weren’t fucking around and would kill us instantly if they felt like it. We put our hands up as a sign of peace and then Aaron began his little speech about Alexandria, meanwhile I was trying to understand their thoughts and the possible outcomes of the situation, silently watching their reactions at the opportunities we were supposedly giving them. I don’t remember what were the magical words he spoke that broke the leader because what came after was more memorable. As Aaron fell to the ground for a well-deserved punch from Rick, my arms fell down and I let a defeated “Oh man, c’mon-“ come out, to then get knocked out too.
And there we were, listening to the bickering of the group on what was the right thing to do. In that chaotic mess, there was one guy that caught my attention, the only one that remained silent the whole time, going back and forth and looking at us with an unreadable stare, ready for the kill with his crossbow if anyone showed the slightest sign to do it. I had to guess he was the one to put me down, because I remember vividly that he wasn’t in my frame when I fell to the ground. I also remember thinking “God, what an asshole!” But then again, if I were them, I would’ve done worse. A girl, Michonne, decided to see herself if any of what Aaron was saying was the truth, so we had to split up. I had to get them to the cars, the ones which the two of us and Eric planned to bring them home, while he had to stay there with Rick until everything was clear.
On the road I talked to the small group that was escorting me, they weren’t bad, they were just extremely careful on who to trust. “So,” began the guy on my side “We haven’t introduced yet, I’m Glenn.” He smiled waiting for me to do the same. I haven’t talked once in those few hours, so when I spoke up it felt strange “I’m Y/N.” Maggie, Abraham, Rosita and Michonne followed his lead presenting themselves, but not with the same spirit. They were all mistrustful and uneasy at the idea to get in a trap, I didn’t feel like saying anything, I didn’t even try because I knew that it wouldn’t change the mood of any of us. However, every once in a while, Glenn would make it better making some jokes. I liked him a lot, I could already feel that we would get along just fine. I couldn’t say the same about the other four, though. I was never able to read people, I didn’t have any type of social skill, so I always tried to mind my own business. “For how long have you lived in Alexandria?” Maggie’s accent was pretty strong, “It’s only been a couple of months.” And obviously, having zero knowledge on how to approach to other humans, I was pretty shit at speaking with them too. I perceived the tension growing once more, they probably felt it too as they didn’t try to talk with me anymore and, my God, I was so glad for it.
Finally, we reached the cars, we drove them back and I got to my partner side again. The little fight they were having before going out, began again. I wasn’t paying attention until I heard a grave new voice. “I don’t know man, this barn smells like shit…” it was the crossbow guy, sitting far away from the rest of his friends, looking in our direction but not directly at us. I could feel Aaron’s tense shoulder finally relax, a sign of hope. “We are going out at night.” I still could not understand why they were the only ones making decisions, they were all nonsense and would probably lead us to death. We got divided again and I could feel the same storm of the night before growing in my stomach, being away from the only people I knew made me feel nauseous, but I swallowed my anxiety down for the mission’s sake. This time I was being followed by everyone else but Rick, Glenn and Michonne. I could feel eyes all over me, especially the long-haired guy that was particularly stressing me out, but the events that led us to the Water Tower were ever more stressful.
When we reached Eric, it was a couple of minutes before he got his ankle broken trying to run away from walkers, I took the flare gun given us by Deanna for emergency cases and shot the single ammunition it had. Aaron came soon after, he rushed in the room where his lover was laying and almost had a breakdown at the sight, their love was something I deeply envied, but I was always happy to be around them. Being the whole day too much for me, I left them some privacy to recollect myself outside. I sat on the hard concrete, reached for a cigarette in my backpack and groaned when I couldn’t find any matches or lighters. Someone behind me, whose steps I couldn’t hear, cleared their voice and offered me one. I turned and that was our real first encounter “I’m sorry for knocking you out.” It almost sounded like a whisper and combined with his stealth approach, he officially gained the nickname of ninja. Maybe it was the relief of finally being somewhat safe again that made me giggle, “Oh, so it was you!” The image is still fresh in my mind, he looked exhausted and extremely guilty as I put some emphasis on ‘was’, he couldn’t even look at me in my eyes while he nodded, however, I still remember the pretty shade of blue his eyes had. I grabbed the lighter and lit up my cigarette, “It’s fine, I understand why you did it, no hard feelings.” I passed it to him again and with another nod he left me alone.
After another sleepless night, we made our return to the Safe-Zone.

[IMAGINE] YOU AND DARYL DIXON FALLING IN LOVE WOULD LOOK LIKE:
(Not my GIF! But thank you to the lovely person who made it!)
Tumblr media
• You first saw Daryl when his group arrived in Alexandria and you find his brooding nature rather interesting. He is very different to the other people you had met here, a loner by choice and not by exclusion. One day he is dragged into the infirmary, badly wounded and in need of urgent care; you’re quick to stablize him however and over the week you help nurse him back to health.
• Once he is released you talk to one another every now and again, usually during spontaneous run ins around the town. Daryl is too reserved to approach you himself, so you’re the one who makes the effort to strike up a conversation. Once the chats begin to flow easier Daryl mentions key points from the last time you had spoken with him and you’re always impressed with his memory.
• He asks if you know how to protect yourself- concerned that you may not since you’ve been under guard from day one. Once you tell him that you’ve never had a chance to learn how; Daryl spends nearly every day training you on self-defence and basic archery. He even gives over a few weapons.
• You two gradually become closer and spend a majority of your free time together doing different activities that the other enjoys. You both believe that it is all platonic in nature, but the atmosphere hints at otherwise and there’s a lot of lingering glances from Daryl when you aren’t looking.
• Everytime he goes on a run he comes back with small gifts. It’s usually items that you’ve mentioned in passing or knick-knacks for around the house. When you thank him for them he shrugs you off everytime and says; ‘Ain’ nothin’.’ But you know he’s going out of his way to do this kindness, and you pay him back by cooking all of his meals without being asked, or tending to his array of constant injuries any time the need arises.
• He refuses to let you go out of the gates without him when medical help is requested. Regularly you two get into arguments about him being needed in Alexandria vs him needing to keep watch of you. He says that you can’t risk getting hurt because the town needs you, but you know that it’s more than that and so you always give in.
• When you break your leg during a mission Daryl helps you with everything at home until it is fully healed. He doesn’t listen when you tell him that you’re more than capable of doing chores with your hands and forces you to rest instead because he wants to care for you like you do for him.
• Over a bowl of stew Daryl asks you about Saddiq and tiptoes around the question of whether or not you are interested in him. Surprised, you burst out into a fit of laughter that lasts until your stomach burns and slap Daryl’s shoulder- quickly reassuring him that nothing has ever been like that at all and if there was he would be the first to know. He doesn’t allow his face to betray his relief and instead says Michonne asked him about it in private.
• You give Daryl a spare key to the house and tell him that he’s welcome to come and go for anything he needs. In the beginning he doesn’t use it, but after a few late nights talking together until exhaustion he starts sleeping on the couch and gets more comfortable to come inside on his own. Eventually you convince him to take the bed after his overnight runs while you’re at work, and now he leaves his pillow behind for his regular return in the morning.
• One day things change between you both. The conversations are emotionally intimate with a lot of comforting, he starts to spend time in bed with you on his off nights and you’re becoming increasingly bold with tugging on his sleeve for attention. You start to like being so close to Daryl and so does he. However, it seems to be a double edged sword as he begins to silently resent other men being too close to you. Appearing out of thin air during chats with someone that makes you laugh a lot, standing extra close to you in public while around the others and asking you for help on mediocre jobs to get you away from certain company. You always make sure he feels cared for during those tense times; mistaking his possessive moments for a bad day and doing something special to cheer him up.
• Daryl comes by while you’re at work and convinces you to take a few hours off for lunch to go outside with him. He reaches out for your hand when you’re both out of eyesight and you melt at the gesture. It is the first time Daryl has held onto a part of you, and it makes you feel warm all over. He leads you to a small clearing a few minutes away and when you see the meadow you’re completely in awe. It’s beautiful; the floor is littered with pastel flowers, full-leaved trees create a dense wall all around and the sun warms your face as you lay down shoulder to shoulder with him. Neither of you let go, and instead just enjoy the moment of being together and not thinking about the years of horror you’ve had to endure and will continue to. You feel safe. You always do with him. After a long pause Daryl speaks up and says that this is his second favorite spot in Alexandria; when you ask what the first one is- he mumbles hurriedly with:
“Where I was las’ nigh’.”

Last chapter…Daryl and reader become friends!
………………………………………………………………………………
It kept going like that, them meeting in the woods every day, and Daryl was surprised with how good he got along with Y/N, how much he enjoyed her company and to listen to her as she spoke. It was still her who did most of the talking when they met, and he enjoyed learning more and more about her, but each day Daryl found himself speaking more and more, sharing little bits about him with her. She seemed to like it when he did it.
It was strange, Daryl couldn’t explain it, but barely a month had passed since that first time they met in the woods and Daryl felt like they’d been friends forever. His mind wandered to her more often than not without him being able to stop it, looking forward to seeing her.
He thought it might be a bit strange that after all those days they had never met outside the woods, but he liked to see her there, alone and away from the town and from everything. It felt it was easier to talk like that, and it didn’t seem Y/N minded they only met in the woods, she was always the one telling him to meet there the next day and the next, and the next.
Daryl wasn't sure if Merle had noticed something was going on, with Daryl getting out with him and his friends less and less, and being gone part of the afternoon or evening. He had dropped a comment here and there, but Daryl was sure his brother just thought he went out hunting, he always made sure to come back with something.
He was now walking to their clearing and he smiled when he heard her voice as she sang. She’d been singing a new song for the last couple of days and Daryl didn’t think she needed to rehearse that much,  he thought it sounded good, but it seemed she didn’t think it was perfect enough. He saw her swinging a bit from side to side as she sang, and she stopped when she saw him, smiling and walking to him.
“Hi.”
“Hey.” He couldn’t help his smile, even though his stomach still did nervous twirls when he saw her. It still took him a little bit of time, of her speaking to him, to be able to fully relax.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah.”
“You sure?” Y/N was looking at him as if she were studying his face, and Daryl hadn’t a clue of what was going on.
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“Well...” Y/N seemed to look for the right words and Daryl began to worry. “Merle was at the club yesterday, he seemed pretty high.”
Daryl scoffed, he thought that Y/N would have seen his brother high quite a few times by now, but maybe he waited until he left the club to get utterly wasted. He was glad Y/N hadn’t seen him at his worst.
“Yeah, he does that.” Daryl shrugged, he didn’t know why he was feeling embarrassed, it was his brother, not him.
“I know that he deals, I guessed that he used to...just didn’t know that that much.” Y/N was talking quietly, stealing glances at him, as if she thought she might upset him by talking like that, but Daryl hated that about his brother. He barely had any memory of Merle before he began taking drugs, and after he started dealing too, it just got worse.
“Was he too bad?”
“A bit...I don’t know, I hadn’t seen him like that before.”
“He didn’t do nothing to you, did he?” Daryl had always been sure his brother wouldn’t hurt any of the girls at the club in any way, but now he couldn’t help but worry.
“No, no.” Y/N assured him and Daryl finally could relax. “But he got into a fight with another guy...didn’t take it well when our guard tried to kick him out...just a big mess.”
“Shit, I’m sorry.” Daryl could see it as if he’d been there, and the feelings of embarrassment came back.
“It’s not your fault,” Y/N said softly. “Just...I was worried thinking maybe he went back home with you, high and so angry...”
Daryl had to stop himself from smiling at that, knowing it wasn’t the right moment, but he couldn’t help how his words made him feel. She was worried about him. It made him feel warm, made something flutter inside his belly. He didn’t want her to worry, though, she didn’t need to.
“It’s okay, I can handle his shit, I’m used to it.” He assured her.
“You shouldn’t have to...”
Y/N was looking down, but she reached out to take his hand, taking him by surprise. Daryl flinched his hand away and Y/N took hers back quick, whispering a sorry. Daryl’s heart was beating hard, and he didn’t know what to do. He hadn’t meant to flinch, but he hadn’t been able to stop it. He wished he hadn’t, he found himself wanting to hold her hand, but he felt too shy to actually reach out and take it. Maybe she didn’t want it anymore.
“Did you want to take a walk? I’m feeling lazy but I’m up for it if you want to.” Y/N stretched her arms over her head and Daryl looked at her, studying her face, wondering if she looked more tired than other days or if maybe he was imagining it. He thought she might have had a rough night, with his brother making a mess and what not.
“Nah, let’s be lazy.” He flopped down on the blanket she’d spread over the ground and she smiled as she sat down next to him.
“Great. I hadn’t told you yet because you really seem into hiking and all that, but I’m really a lazy person.”
She joked and a crooked smile tugged at Daryl’s lips. It wasn’t the first time he found himself thinking that she was cute, he tried to stop it but he couldn’t. Half his mind was still on Merle, though, embarrassed about Y/N seeing his brother like that.
“Can I ask you something?” He gathered enough courage to ask.
“Yeah, yeah, you know you can.”
“I know that people in town say things about us, the Dixons I mean.” He didn't give a shit about what people said, yet his cheeks heated up. “You hadn't heard about us before we met?”
“People in this town love to talk shit, so yeah, I heard stuff about your brother, some stuff. A bit about your father too. Not about you, though, not much.”
Daryl nodded, he had guessed so. “So if you knew who Merle was, why you decided to talk to me, you knew I was his brother, you knew what they say ‘bout us.”
“Well, my mom always told me not to judge a book by its cover. And not to judge someone by people’s gossip.” Her mum sounded kind, like her, but also naive.  “And I told you, most people in this town just talk shit.”
“Whatever shit they say about my father is true.” Probably it wasn't enough. “And some of the stuff they say about Merle too.”
“Yeah, I know.”
“But when we met here the first time, you knew who I was but you started talking to me like you weren't worried.”
“I wasn't.” She shrugged. “They don't say that much about you.”
“But my brother-”
“You aren't your brother.” Y/N cut him off. “And I told you that day, I thought that you seemed mostly harmless, not like the guys you were with. I mean, you look badass, sure, you have that ‘don’t mess with me’ vibe going on, but I thought you wouldn’t do anything bad to me, you didn’t strike me like the kind of guy to hurt people over nothing.”
Daryl didn't know what to think, he'd never wanted to be seen like harmless, he liked to keep people away, and looking harmless wasn't useful to get away from the messes sometimes he'd gotten in with Merle. But he'd never want Y/N to think he'd hurt her in any way.
“And I thought you seemed kind of sweet...” She added quietly.
Daryl blushed, he couldn't help it, he didn't think he was sweet, he hadn't intended to, it wouldn't bring him nothing good. But when Y/N said it, it didn't sound like an insult like when Merle did.
“Ain't sweet.” He muttered.
“I think you are, most times, with me at least.” She shrugged looking down. Daryl didn't know what to think, what to say, he wasn't even sure of how her words made him feel.  “Some people gossip shit about me too, and I don't care. So I'm not going to believe blindly whatever they say.”
“Who talks shit about you?”
“My step-father and his friends.”
“Didn't know you had a step-father.” When she had told him she was alone after her mother died, Daryl had thought she didn't have any other family left.
“He's a stupid asshole… Don't want to think about him if you don't mind. I haven't seen him again since I left my mom's home after she died anyway.”
“It's fine.” He never felt like thinking about his father either, and Daryl wondered if it was the same for her. The idea that maybe her stepfather had hurt her somehow made his blood boil, but he didn't want to ask her if she didn't want to talk about it.
For a little while, none of them said anything, but Daryl noticed her looking at him through the corner of her eye. He still felt like holding her hand, but he was still unsure about it. Slowly, he shifted and itched his hand closer to hers until the side of his hand brushed hers softly, but he didn’t dare to anything else.
Her hand moved over his slowly, as if she was unsure he'd flinch away, and when she seemed sure he was okay with it, warm and soft fingers laced with his, and somehow Daryl felt as if her warmth spread from his hand through his body, sending twirls to his belly, but he tried not to dwell on those feelings.
“I know that you don’t deal.” Y/N she began speaking again and Daryl was glad about it, it made it easier to focus on something that wasn’t her hand on his. “And I’m pretty sure you don’t use either.”
“I don’t.” Daryl rushed to say. He didn’t want Y/N to think he might, and part of him felt hurt at the idea of her maybe thinking it, though it was understandable.
“Never?” She looked at him but Daryl couldn’t see any judgment or disgust in her eyes, just the same curiosity as whenever she got him talking about himself. Daryl shook his head. “Can’t be easy, with your brother dealing and all that, not to use.”
It hadn’t been, with his brother and his friends getting high when he was with them, they trying to get him into it too, and Merle had tried to get him into dealing too, but somehow he’d never done one thing or the other, not even Daryl was sure of how.
“I saw what that shit did to Merle. I wasn’t interested.” Daryl’d done some things that he later regretted while being wasted, which he didn’t feel like telling to Y/N, but when Merle got high it was even worse than when he was drunk. Usually, it was a dangerous combination. Taking drugs might be one of the only things Daryl hadn’t let his brother talk him into.
“I wouldn’t like to see you like Merle was yesterday.”
“I wouldn’t like it either.”
“You shouldn’t have to deal with Merle like that, to put up with his friends and all that shit, and with people gossiping without knowing you. I wish you hadn’t to” Y/N seemed really upset about it all as she spoke, and Daryl didn’t know what to say, he still couldn’t understand that she’d care for him like that. “You could leave this shit place and all that like I’m going to do, go to the city too.” Daryl had been trying to ignore the fact that at some point Y/N was going to leave and he’d lose his friend and would be alone again, and now it hit him again. “You could go with me. You’re smart and resourceful, you could do well there.”
Daryl scoffed and shook his head, he didn’t know why Y/N thought all that about him. She was the only reason why he’d ever leave the town and go to the city, but he knew he had nothing to do there. Besides, he couldn’t leave Merle, he was his brother and he owed him, or else he’d probably be still stuck with his father.
“Nah.”
“I knew you’d say that.” Y/N whispered with a sad smile.
Daryl wondered if she thought she’d miss him like he knew she would miss her, if the idea of not being able to meet as they did again make her feel like it made him feel. Probably not, not at the same extent at least, Daryl knew how much she wanted to leave, and he understood it. It didn’t mean it made it easier to think about saying goodbye, about losing his friend, losing Y/N. He rather not think about it.
Daryl tried to think about something to say, something to do, any way to get away from the mood that had settled between them. Reluctantly, he let go of her hand to rummage into his bag.
“Are you hungry?”
He’d been bringing Y/N food for the last couple of days or so, stuff he had hunted and then cooked, so she had something to eat before going to the club and she wouldn’t have to cook, and they'd eat together. He guessed it might help her save money too.
“I told you, you don’t have to do this.” She’d tried to tell him he didn’t have to do that for her since the first time he had shown up with roasted rabbit, but until she told him she didn’t want him to, Daryl didn’t feel like stopping, he had enough food to share it with her, and he didn’t feel like he could do anything helpful for her in any other way.
“Thank you, Daryl.” She smiled softly at him. “And you say you aren’t sweet...” She teased, and Daryl rolled his eyes, blushing and nudging her with his shoulder gently. “I’d never thought squirrels were this good.”
Nerves knotted Daryl’s stomach as he rode to where he’d meet with Y/N, not in the woods for the first time but at the road outside it, right at the end of the town. It was the first time they met outside of the woods and it made Daryl nervous, even though he didn’t really know why, almost as nervous as showing her the bike he’d finally finished.
The day before he’d told her about meeting at the outside of the forest, and Y/N had seemed confused but not in a bad way. At first, Daryl’d wanted to keep it secret that he’d finished the bike and wanted to show it to her, a surprise or whatever, but he’d ended up spilling it, unsure about her really being interested.
Y/N had beamed at him, though, seeming excited, and the image of her asking him questions about the bike and about riding, asking him if she’d take her for a ride with him, helped ease Daryl’s nerves a bit and made him smile She was already waiting there and she grinned, rushing to him as he stopped the bike in front of her, looking from him to the bike with wide eyes.
“This is so cool, I can’t believe you put it together yourself!”
Her words, her smile, the excitement in her voice, all it made Daryl felt a sort of pride he didn’t think he had felt before. He felt a bit embarrassed too, couldn’t help it, but mostly he just felt happy, in a way he hadn’t really get to feel before, not until Y/N and he began meeting anyway.
“You really are going to let me ride with you, right?” She was beaming at him, looking so excited and so cute, Daryl couldn’t help but grin like an idiot too.
“Yeah, come on.”
She didn’t lose time to get situated behind him, placing her hands tentatively on his waist, and Daryl tried not to stiff at the contact and to ignore the rush of electricity that went through him at her touch.
“Ready?”
“Yeah!”
As he kicked the bike into movement, Y/N’s arms wrapped tighter around him, her body shifting closer to him, making it hard to ignore all those feelings that she gave him and that he fought hard to keep at bay. He couldn’t help but enjoy the feeling of her against his back and her arms around him, making the feeling of riding the bike, which he’d always loved, even better.
“You okay?” He shouted at her over the rumble of the bike. He was going slower than he’d usually do for her sake, knowing it was the first time she rode on a bike, he didn’t know if she was going to like it or not.
“I’m more than okay!” She shouted back. “I love this!”
Daryl smiled, allowing himself to ride a bit faster, giddy at the idea of Y/N being enjoying it as much as him. He rode further than he had planned, riding through secondary roads in the countryside. After a while, he took a turn towards one of the small paths into the woods, stopping after a few meters. He turned to check on Y/N.
“This was...this was like flying!” She said, excited, before he could say anything, her eyes bright. “I mean, I’ve never flown but this has to be the closest thing! I love it!”
Daryl couldn’t help his grin at her words, glad she seemed to enjoy it as much as him, and wondering once again how she could be that cute always. Before he could say anything, Y/N had leaned over to plant a kiss on his cheek. He froze, heart beating fast, something fluttering in his belly, doing those twirls he didn't know what to do with. Y/N looked at him biting her lip, seeming unsure, as if she might be wondering if she’d overstepped, and Daryl decided not to over think it.
“Glad you like it.” He tried to sound casual.
Y/N smiled and held onto his shoulders to got off the bike. She took off her backpack and began rummaging into it. “You’re always feeding me so today it was me who cooked,” she took out a package. “It’s just sandwiches, I’m not good at cooking, you’ll have to teach me.”
“Thank you.” Daryl took the one she passed him, smiling, he couldn’t remember the last time someone made him food.
Y/N looked around and then walked towards a patch of green, fluffy looking grass. She went to sit down there and Daryl sat down next to her, both eating their sandwiches as the sun began to go down.
“I loved this Daryl, I really did.” Y/N looked at him with a smile that had his belly doing twirls again. “You’ll give me another ride soon, won’t you?”
“Yeah, yeah, sure.” Daryl returned her smile, he was as eager as her, weird, unwelcomed feelings be damned.
“I have to go back, gotta work.” Y/N let out a sigh, sounding like it was the last thing she wanted to do in the world, and Daryl too wished they could stay there just a little bit longer. “I’m going to be late.”
“I’m sorry.” Daryl got up and reached out his hand to help her up, looking away.
“I’m not, it was worthy.”
Daryl dropped her at the street parallel to the club, in case his brother and his friends had decided to go to the club and they might be outside or something. He couldn’t really explain why, but he didn’t want them knowing Y/N and him were friends, and at least he wanted to save them from Merle’s teasing.
“You’re gonna get into trouble for being late?”
“Nah, I don’t think so, I’m not that late anyway.” Y/N assured him, giving his shoulders a little squeeze as he got off the bike. “Thank you for this, really.”
“It was nothing.”
“It wasn’t. See you tomorrow?”
“Sure thing.”

blood covered your hands as you stood frozen in the middle of the room. your pulse was high, heart felt like it was going to jump out of your chest. there you stood, right hand still gripping firmly the small dagger, in front of the lifeless body of your dad.
he had protected you since the beginning of the apocalypse, finding food and shelter to keep you both alive. he had become your only ally in a world that had turned against you. but you knew you had to do it; it was inevitable. the fever had already settled in when you had found him, and the virus quickly took him away from you.
you took a deep breath before stabbing the sharp instrument into your father’s skull.
Tumblr media
the dry leaves crunched under your feet as you walked through the woods looking for your next meal. to be honest, hunting was not exactly your thing. you would manage to catch some rabbits from time to time, but it was not enough to feed you properly.
if you kept up this pace, you doubted you would not make it through the autumn. you had run out of canned food two weeks ago, which forced you to use the little knowledge you had on hunting.
you sighed as the deer you had been tracking for two hours ran away. with your attempts to find something to eat proving useless, you returned to the small cabin you were staying in. you didn't want to waste any more time or the little energy you had left. at this point, you had gone three days without eating anything.
as you continued walking, you suddenly heard a sound behind you. you turned around quickly, only to find a crossbow aimed at your head. "don't move or I'll shoot an arrow to your skull!" a voice said. you slowly raised your hands, heart racing with fear.
“drop your weapon” the long-haired man demanded, ready to press the trigger if you tried anything.
as you released your grip on the bow, you felt it slip through your fingers and hit the ground with a loud thud. your legs were shaking so badly, it felt like they were made of jelly. you knew that your weakness was due to the malnutrition that had been plaguing you for weeks. you had been surviving on very little food, and it was starting to take its toll on your body.
"please don't kill me,” you said, your voice shaking with fear. “I was just looking for something to hunt." your knees finally gave up, leaving you kneeled in front of the stranger.
“any other weapons on ya that I should know of?” inquired the man as he kicked the bow away from you so you couldn't reach it. you shook your head to this, hoping he would believe you.
"you look awfully pale," the man said, lowering the crossbow. "what's your name?"
you hesitated for a moment, wondering if you could trust him. but you didn't really have a choice. "y/n," you answered, still feeling weak and dizzy. he seemed to sense your vulnerability and lowered his guard a bit.
"name’s Daryl," he said, offering you a hand to help you stand up. “ya on your own?”
“yes, yes I am.”
"when did ya last eat somethin’?”
“i don’t really remember,” your brow furrowed in concentration as you tried to recall the events of the past few days, but your mind was too foggy. “a couple of days ago, maybe three.”
Daryl looked at you with concern. "c’mon," he said, "let's get you something to eat." he led you back to his campsite, where he had a small fire going and some food cooking. as you sat down and started to eat, you couldn't believe how good it felt to have a hot meal in your stomach.
as you sat by the fire with Daryl, you found yourself opening up to him about the events that led you to the woods. you told him about your father and how you had to put him down when he turned into a walker. tears streamed down your face as you spoke, and Daryl just sat there quietly, listening to you.
when you finished, he put a hand on your shoulder and said, "it's not your fault." his words brought you a sense of comfort that you hadn't felt in a long time.
you spent the next few days recovering in Daryl's camp. he had been kind enough to share his food and supplies with you, and you couldn't thank him enough.
as you started to regain your strength, you found yourself drawn to him. there was something about him that made you feel safe and protected, and you couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to stay with him longer. however, you knew that the apocalypse was not a place for romance, so you forced yourself to push those thoughts out of your head.
you stayed with Daryl for a week, and during that time, he taught you how to hunt and track. he also showed you how to defend yourself against walkers and other threats. you were grateful for everything he had done for you, but you knew you couldn't stay with him forever.
one morning, as you were packing your things, Daryl approached you. "listen, I know you gotta go," he said, "but I just wanted to say...you're a good ally." you smiled at him, feeling a sense of warmth in your chest. "thanks," you said, "you're a good ally too."
with that, you said your goodbyes and headed back into the woods. as you walked away, you couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness. you had grown attached to Daryl, and you knew you would miss him. but you also knew that you had to keep moving forward, one step at a time.

“you can take the bed, I’ll sleep on the couch.” you declared as you motioned towards the only bedroom there was in the house you and Daryl chose to spend the night.
“nah, ya take it.” he obstinately answered while rearranging one of the worn-out cushions under his head, hoping the putrid smell would dissipate soon.
“looks like we’ll have to split the couch then.” you, stubborn as a mule, were not going to surrender without a fight.
(...)
“y’know, if yer gonna spend the damn night squirming we could just sleep in the bed” Daryl suggested one hour later, exasperated by your constant shifting, although he did enjoy your proximity.
“it was about time you asked, Dixon.” you smirked at his so appealing proposal. “might as well make something fun out of this, right?”

It’s been years since I read my first fic on tumblr, and I thought it was about time I wrote myself, so I have a Daryl blurb written on my notes and a Rick oneshot in process. I was considering posting them here, but I’m really insecure about the outcome, what do you guys think? would anyone read them if I published them?
