Cyrus Spengler (also known as Dr. Spengler, voiced by Danny Wells) runs Spengler Laboratories. He wants his nephew Egon to help him. He arrives in New York to see how his nephew is doing and reveals that he doesn't believe in ghosts.

Cyrus needed help running his new research lab and decided to ask Egon. He took a flight to New York City. The GHOSTBUSTERS neglected to pick him up because they took longer than they thought with a case on West 12th Street. Cyrus took a cab to the Firehouse and met Janine. Without his prescription glasses on, he mistook Slimer for a cat who played in the mud. Cyrus was dismayed by what Egon was doing with his life. The guys decided to take Cyrus with them on a bust in the Garment District but he lost his glasses and didn't see a thing.

Cyrus essentially forced Egon to make good on a promise long ago to help him in his studies.He had Egon work at his lab feeding rats. Cyrus allowed the other GHOSTBUSTERS to have Egon back for at least one more bust, Poltergeists. He declined to go with them and stayed at the Firehouse. While in the basement with Janine, he examined the Containment Unit.

He ignored Janine's warnings and fiddled with the airlock. He accidentally freed the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Only then he realized that ghosts were indeed real and that the GHOSTBUSTERS needed Egon. After Stay Puft was recaptured, Cyrus absolved Egon of his obligation and told his nephew that he should stay with the GHOSTBUSTERS and had important work to do.

Cyrus has been shown to be a no-nonsense pragmatist and initially doesn't believe parapsychology to be a legitimate science. He does prove to be a decent guy upon learning that the paranormal is very real and shows support for Egon pursuing it. He also has extreme astigmatism, mistaking Slimer for a cat upon losing his glasses and missing seeing a real ghostbusting emergency.

Why I really don’t like Uncle Cyrus

I will never say this enough, the way he plays Egon in his episode is awful. Egon’s promise to him binds him to go in his aid if he was ever needed, so the motherfucker PRETENDS to need him- and then promptly sends the guy to do trivial stuff, the kind of thing any part-timer, fresh outta college kid could have done. Keeping Egon from doing what he really wants to do just because he doesn’t agree with his career choice and adding insult to injury by having him do the most insignificant job he could? Honestly, what the fuck.

What specially hurt me about this was Egon’s loyalty towards his family is so great that he was willing to obey even if the request was, by all accounts, unreasonable. And there is also the fact that his uncle seems to care very little about his feelings in his crusade for...fuck I don’t even know, preserving the Spengler tradition? Saving his nephew from a life of doing what he liked against his family’s best advice? I don’t even know, man. Spengz is clearly unhappy in the labs and his uncle not only CLEARLY notices, but continues to act like this is all in Egon’s best interest. I am so full of rage just typing this, oh, my god.

Finally, what pushes uncle Cyrus to make the choice to let him stay is witnessing the capture of Stay Puft (Which he freed in the first place because he was being a jerk pressing buttons like a five-year-old left alone in the car, despite Janine telling him not to because I guess since he’s a scientist he knows better even if he’s literally never seen anything like this before, god forbid a secretary tells him what to do... *deep breath* I really hate this guy) which is pretty sucky too ‘cause it still is not about caring for Egon’s feelings or wants, or even acknowledging the fact that he’s a grown man and trying to decide what’s best for him like he’s still a kid is messed up. NO. It’s about him approving of it. Like Egon even needs his approval 

(And the poor guy thinks he does, please save my son OHMYGOOOOD)

Look,I know standards to what was OK for family to do have changed in the past decades and I know I probably shouldn’t look too much into it, but it still REALLY bothers me.

HP Lovecraft, ensoñaciones contra el mundo moderno

 "Lo que creo que es pura misericordia en este mundo es la incapacidad de la mente humana para correlacionar lo que hay dentro. Vivimos en una isla de plácida ignorancia, dentro de los océanos negros del infinito, y no estábamos destinados a viajes largos. Las ciencias, cada una de las cuales tiende en una dirección particular, no nos han hecho demasiado daño hasta ahora; pero llegará un día en que la síntesis de este saber disociado abrirá perspectivas aterradoras sobre la realidad y el lugar espantoso que ocupamos en ella: entonces esta revelación nos volverá locos, a menos que huyamos en esta luz fatal para refugiarnos en el paz y seguridad de una nueva era oscura".

 Esta cita casi profética de "El llamado de Cthulhu" es una advertencia. Una advertencia de actualidad en un momento de la historia en el que la humanidad se enfrenta a una avalancha tecnológica que tiende a sobrepasar sus propios límites: investigación sobre el genoma humano, clonación, organismos genéticamente modificados o doctrinas trashumantes (teoría de la confusión de géneros) son todas amenazas que, a diferencia del “panteón oculto” creado por el autor, son hermosas y muy reales.

 Panteón oculto

 Este "panteón oculto" es uno de los pilares principales, si no el pilar principal del trabajo de Lovecraft. Reflejo de una civilización arcaica a priori que permanece más allá del tiempo, es una caja de Pandora que, una vez abierta, generará consecuencias muchas veces fatales. Nyarlathotep, Yog-Sothoth, Azathoth, Dagon y Cthulhu, como tantas entidades, dioses venerados por cultos que se remontan a tiempos inmemoriales que supieron permanecer en el secreto. Una constante en la obra del autor es la ruptura de este secreto, el héroe principal y/o los protagonistas de la historia vislumbrarán o presenciarán hechos extraños, rayados en lo sobrenatural, que por supuesto despertarán su curiosidad. Y es precisamente esta facultad la que provocará la pérdida del héroe principal, incluso de toda la humanidad: “Hay horrores, en las fronteras de la vida, que no sospechamos, y de vez en cuando, la desastrosa curiosidad de un hombre las pone al alcance de nosotros por la noche”. La curiosidad será, por tanto, uno de los factores determinantes de la historia porque inclinará el destino en el horror de Françis Weyland Thurston, héroe principal de "La llamada de Cthulhu" y antropólogo, que se hará cargo de la historia de investigación realizada por su difunto tío abuelo, tras descubrir un bajorrelieve que representa a una espantosa criatura acompañada de desconocidos jeroglíficos.

Lovecraft es famoso por haber sido capaz de crear un universo propio: las criaturas y dioses mencionados anteriormente son los ejemplos más representativos. Pero citemos también lugares importantes, como la repugnante Innsmouth, una ciudad que esconde un terrible secreto o incluso Arkham y su universidad la Miskatonic University. También hay, y esto en el trabajo general del autor, un cuerpo de libros malditos. "The Cult of Ghouls", "Pnakotics", "The Unaussprechtlichen Kulten" o el famoso "Necronomicon", libros con una historia que es única para cada uno de ellos, y en ocasiones con detalles de sus autores. ¡Tanto es así que se llevaron a cabo muchos debates sobre la existencia de estos libros! Este es particularmente el caso del "Necronomicon", un libro emblemático de lo que algunos llaman el "mito de Cthulhu" y que se menciona muy a menudo en los cuentos de Lovecraft pero también más allá (se puede encontrar, por ejemplo, en el película "Evil Dead"). Los relatos breves de Lovecraft obedecen, por tanto, a un patrón muy específico que en la mayoría de los casos permanece inalterado, todo anclado en un verdadero paradigma que sumerge al lector en este universo que hizo famoso a su autor. Sustancia y forma son inseparables y se unen en el horror gracias, por un lado, al universo desarrollado y al progreso de la historia, un verdadero descenso a los infiernos que casi siempre acaba en la locura o la muerte...

 Una humanidad anticuada

 La imagen de Lovecraft es generalmente la de un hombre retraído. Ciertamente es un autor atormentado, pero, no obstante, cuando miras un poco más de cerca, te das cuenta de que el hombre en cuestión está mucho más abierto al mundo de lo que parece. Ahora sabemos que Lovecraft estaba interesado en la ciencia, especialmente en la astronomía. Este aspecto de su personalidad está presente en toda su obra, sin embargo, es mucho más que eso. De hecho, su trabajo refleja la realidad de una época, a saber, un dualismo por un lado entre la ciencia, que está cobrando impulso gracias a muchos avances (descubrimiento del cuanto de energía por Max Planck en 1900, teoría de la relatividad de Albert Einstein en 1905, o el descubrimiento de una galaxia fuera de la nuestra por Edwin Hubble en 1924), y por el otro un polo conservador con fuerte influencia religiosa.

Más allá de las consideraciones sociales de este dualismo, la ciencia tiene otro impacto en el trabajo de HP Lovecraft, no como un tema directo, sino como el punto de partida de una idea capital en la mente del autor: El hombre, con los avances técnicos y científicos, especialmente en el campo de la astronomía y el universo, no es nada. Así HP Lovecraft barre con el dorso de la mano el etnocentrismo absolutista heredado en gran parte de la filosofía de la Ilustración, no para imponer un dios conocido por los hombres (salvo unos pocos iniciados) o un dios benefactor, sino este "panteón oculto" que parece ser una amenaza para la humanidad.

 Nosotros los humanos, ¿qué somos ante las criaturas, los dioses que existen más allá del abismo del tiempo? A pesar del progreso técnico y científico, parecería, según Lovecraft, que la respuesta es: "nada". Quizás el autor deba este pesimismo sobre nuestro futuro a la influencia de uno de los expertos de la Revolución Conservadora alemana, Oswald Spengler.

 Como lo demuestra la correspondencia con Clark Ashton Smith que data de 1927: “Es mi creencia y ya era mucho antes de que Spengler pusiera el sello de la prueba académica en este punto, que nuestra era mecánica e industrial es una era del todo bastante decadente”. La decadencia de Lovecraft también se aplica al individuo a través del prisma de la degeneración racial y étnica. En efecto, el autor es conocido por su racismo y antisemitismo y es innegable que este aspecto rezuma literalmente a través de su obra: “Todos los presos habían demostrado pertenecer a una especie bastarda, vil y mentalmente aberrante. En su mayor parte eran marineros, una pizca de negros y mulatos del Caribe o Cabo Verde que ofrecían un tono vudú al culto. Sin embargo, antes de que se hicieran muchas preguntas, se hizo evidente que había algo más profundo y antiguo que el fetichismo negro. Tan degradados e ignorantes como eran, estas criaturas se aferraron con sorprendente tenacidad a la idea central de su fe repugnante” (El Llamado de Cthulhu"). ¡Hoy en día, tal descripción, incluso en un contexto puramente ficticio, le valdría al autor una visita a la sala 17 del Tribunal de Grande Instance de París! Este disgusto por el mestizaje va más allá en ocasiones al ir de la mano de un atavismo sobrenatural y aterrador como en "La pesadilla de Innsmouth" o "El miedo al acecho".

 Finalmente, uno de los aspectos más interesantes de Lovecraft es una confrontación global entre el mundo civilizado moderno, adepto a los métodos científicos y racionalistas, y un enemigo engañosamente arcaico. No hay armas avanzadas como pistolas láser para aniquilar a la especie humana (que de entrada no caracteriza la obra del autor en el campo de la ciencia ficción), la propia existencia de estas criaturas, el hecho de que no tengan nada conocido por el hombre, así como su poder desconcertante (¿mágico? ¿científico?) son suficientes para tener la ventaja sobre una humanidad obsoleta...

 El horror que se encuentra más allá

 En vista de las diversas características fundamentales de la obra de Lovecraft, uno puede preguntarse si, al final, es solo un típico reaccionario de su tiempo. El rechazo de los principios de la filosofía de la Ilustración, su aversión al mestizaje y su posición ambigua hacia la modernidad sugerirían que sí. Sin embargo, hay que tener en cuenta el pesimismo, la misantropía y la vida del autor, socialmente degradado en una América cambiante. Su relación con la ciencia sigue siendo una de las claves para entender su obra, una verdadera relación de amor/odio, una tensión capital que actúa como piedra angular. ¿Cómo vería a Estados Unidos hoy en día, el cuartel general de las finanzas superficiales y una sociedad fracturada entre lo peor del liberalismo libertario (cf. Miley Cyrus) y el fanatismo fanático de algunos? Así como dios fue asesinado por el hombre, según el famoso filósofo del martillo, HP Lovecraft podría desear que el horror que yace latente más allá del tiempo en las profundidades de R'lyeh lo envolviera, una especie de estado de ánimo dormido para poner fin a esta edad oscura demasiado humana...

Intelsat declares bankruptcy as means to fund C-band spectrum clearing

WASHINGTON — Intelsat, the world’s second largest satellite operator by revenue, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection late May 13 as a means to ease its nearly $15 billion debt load and participate in an FCC spectrum clearing program. 

Intelsat said it has secured a $1 billion debtor-in-possession financing commitment that, following court approval, will allow the company to fund continuing operations and get started clearing C-band spectrum under a program that could net the operator $4.86 billion. 

The Luxembourg and Virginia-based operator filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Richmond. The company operates a fleet of roughly 50 satellites, and has another, Galaxy-30, scheduled to launch this summer on an Ariane 5 rocket. 

Intelsat was thought to be headed toward bankruptcy after it skipped a $125 million interest payment in April, triggering a 30-day grace period before defaulting. The company’s second largest shareholder, Cyrus Capital Partners, told Intelsat it should avoid bankruptcy and anything that would jeopardize its chance at claiming the $4.86 billion in accelerated spectrum-clearing payments. That advice was opposite Intelsat’s third largest shareholder, Appaloosa, which urged Intelsat to use bankruptcy as a means of getting the FCC to pay the operator a higher amount. 

Stephen Spengler, Intelsat’s chief executive, used the May 13 bankruptcy announcement to confirm Intelsat will participate in the FCC’s accelerated clearing program.

“We intend to move forward with the accelerated clearing of C-band spectrum in the United States and to achieve a comprehensive solution that would result in a stronger balance sheet,” Spengler said. “This will position us to invest and pursue our strategic growth objectives, build on our strengths, and serve the mission-critical needs of our customers with additional resources and wind in our sails.”

To receive the $4.86 billion, Intelsat has to compress customers from 500 megahertz of C-band into 200 megahertz by December 2023, two years faster than the FCC’s deadline to clear out the spectrum. The FCC is transferring the remaining 300 megahertz of spectrum, used today mainly for satellite broadcasting, to cellular operators for 5G networks. 

David Tolley, Intelsat’s chief financial officer, said the company will need to spend around $1.6 billion on the manufacture and launch of new satellites, plus video compression technology and signal filters on the ground to clear C-band for 5G wireless signals. Half that amount, $800 million, will need to be spent by June 2021, before receiving any FCC reimbursement, he said. 

Those upfront costs have “created an even greater need for the Company to obtain financing to meet the FCC’s quickly approaching Accelerated Relocation Payment deadlines,” Tolley wrote in Intelsat’s bankruptcy filing. 

Tolley said the coronavirus pandemic is projected to reduce Intelsat’s 2020 revenue by $160 million because airplanes and cruise ships aren’t using as much satellite Wi-Fi, and the absence of live sporting events gutted demand for occasional use television broadcasting. 

Intelsat General Corp., the military and government business arm of Intelsat, is not part of the Chapter 11 proceedings, Intelsat said. 

Intelsat is the third large satellite communications company to declare bankruptcy this year, following network operator Speedcast in April, and megaconstellation startup OneWeb in March.

I might as well elaborate a bit on my thoughts (Quite a bit of headcanoning, more like) on why Mrs. Spengler seems cool in her actual appareances in the series despite there also being hints to Egon’s family not being cool at all, here we go:

The team and Egon seems to be very fond of her, which tells me she probably extends her mothering to them as well; and for what can be seen of her, she’s a very loving, if also lowkey smothering kind of mom. Which is why it seems kind of contradictory when you look at that together with Egon’s comments on how his parents wouldn’t talk to him for a week for something like getting an A- in a test.

Egon mentions in one episode (I believe it’s the one with the dragon) that his family is one of men of science; his mom would have married into that family and possibly have other concepts as to what was acceptable for a Spengler to do. She does seem slightly at odds with the somewhat stiff disposition for anything that isn’t scientifical, which we see in Egon to some degree and his Uncle Cyrus in a much clearer fashion: Giving Egon home-made remedies for a cold, treating him sort of like he still were a kid when it’s more than evident that he’s an adult, taking karate lessons for the sheer excitement of it and the somewhat dry (I wanna say ‘Stereotipycal jewish mom’ but I really am not sure whether that impression is right) sense of humor she displays. It strikes me as though she might have balanced out more or less where her husband lacked, if we work under the assumption that he was like Uncle Cyrus. 

However, as it happens (My mom was young in the eighties and she has this kind of ideas, so it makes sense to me that a housewife who’s son is in his late 20′s in the eighties would have them as well, sad as it is) she possibly has this ‘Stand by your man’ mentality where she has to support Mr. Spengler’s point of view on how they raise their son, whether she approves of it or not. The most she defies this idea, as I see it, is subtly pressing for the punishment to be cut short or less severe, and it most likely works at least some of the times.

She probably thinks it’s cool at first, like, yes, her husband is too strict on the boy but Egon is smart and hard-working and beyond from the occasional explosion, and sometimes modifying gadgets around the house, he doesn’t give any trouble. He doesn’t even ask for toys, just contents with his chemistry set and access to his father’s tool-shed. And when he does give trouble, well, they don’t hit him or punish him, they just give him a time-out. A time-out that doesn’t quite sit right with her but, well, they HAVE to discipline him somehow, no? Even if ignoring the boy and refusing to talk to him for something as trivial as, say, reading comics late at night, way past his bedtime, does seem a bit excesive for her taste...

The only way she figures she can make up for this is constantly hovering over him. If she’s feeding him well then they’re not bad parents, right? If she is constantly monitoring him, then he’s being cared for. If he’s healthy then they’re doing a good job. The fact that he does well in school and keeps the Spengler family tradition of going into science is only a proof that they’re good parents. So what if he’s had a fixation with the supernatural since he was a child and suffered night terrors for years- insisting the Boogeyman was after him? He’s fine. He’s doing fine. They’re doing a fine job.

It’s probably until she gets to see him as an adult with Ray and Peter, happy pursuing what he is passionate about, more comfortable than she’s seen him in years that it even crosses her mind that they could have done better. He never did had it easy connecting with others or communicating with them, but now he has two friends who seem to understand him anyhow, who seem to like him the way he is. What has changed in him due to their influence is for the best and she has to wonder why he wasn’t this happy at home, with his family.

Let’s  jump up to the actual RGB timeline. Egon’s dad seems to be absent. Completely. Which makes me think he’s probably passed away. Egon’s uncle, Cyrus, is the next best thing we get to more or less fathom what he might have been like. And he’s a prick! I wanted to type my feelings on it here but I think it requires a separate post, it’s too long and contains a lot of swearing and crying. The point is, her husband gone, Mrs. Spengler gains a new perspective. This is not to say he actively kept her form making her desisions or anything of the sort, merely that once she can stop worrying about backing up his choices and being supportive of what he does, she can be more open and sincere with the way she considers Egon should be treated...which is still not ideal, but Egon seems to be at least able not only to bear with it, but appreciate it.

And thus we get the Mrs. Spengler we know.
