Came home from vacation really recently and I am welcomed back to a boathouse with only two coxswains there.

Apparently, the four or five days I was gone, there was only ONE coxswain for the entire women’s team.

Today, two of us came back.

And today, I fucked up, yet again. I could not keep close to the other boat out on the water, and we were doing a simple drill. I had to do practically nothing!

The drill in question?

1 and pause by fours

On the square

Going up 1/4 every five strokes

Quarter slide, half slide, 3/4, full slide, switch four.

Simple right? Well I couldn’t get close to the other boat and I fucked everyone up by being super far out. Made several attempts to adjust, and the worst part? MY MISTAKE WAS MADE AT THE BEGINNING OF PRACTICE! How? Because I didn’t think to communicate with the other boat! And my docking was not great.

Why? Because I decided to listen to my rowers. Someone needs to slap me everything I try and risk it just to make my rowers happy. Not doing that again.

And 2nd practice. A storm hit. Needless to say we did not get an actual 2nd practice.

So, long story short, I need to improve.

Ok so I found this absolutely hilarious article from like over 20 years that details the proper way to throw your coxswain into the water after winning a race, as well as gives tips as to how to deal with coxswains who try to resist.

I don’t think Bobby would be the type to force the boys to chase after him, but I know he wouldn’t go down without a fight. Like he’s going to do everything in his power to get at least one of them into the water with him.

Once they’ve thrown him in it’s only fair that they have to help him out, especially in winter when he’s go layer upon layers of clothes weighing him down. But Bobby isn’t going to be the guy who accepts the hand being offered only to pull the oarsman into the water*, that’s just rude and bad etiquette.

Once he’s out of the water he chases the boys down to give them wet hugs aka jump onto their backs and cling onto them like a leech stealing their warmth.

Of course, he’s got severe asthma so some days, especially the cold ones, he doesn’t get very far. He’s hunched over breathing heavy and the boys are immediately by his side to see if he’s okay like “shit Bobby, you good???” And then he just shakes his head like a dog or latches onto whoever’s closest because he was totally faking it the whole time. Which probably definitely isn’t fair because some days they never know if he’s joking or not and what if he’s actually not joking?
