TOP 10 MUSIC & BAND FANDOMS ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS (2009-2022)
To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Music & Bands Category on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.
Popslash was in the top 10 in 2010-2011. It got as high as top 3 in 2010. By 2022, this tag was removed from the Music & Bands Category list and fanworks tagged with it show up in Music RPF instead.
American Idol RPF was in 3rd place in 2009, and 2nd in 2010-2012. This tag was then removed from the Music & Bands category by 2013, and can be found in the Celebrities & Real People and TV Shows categories instead. I’m leaving it out in this bar chart since it means this tag was miscategorized.
Fandom tags that are no longer in the Music & Bands category tag as of posting this are left out of the bar chart race. These tags are usually either miscategorized or already have other tags referring to the same fandom.
For tags that existed on the same years before eventually merging into one tag later on (such as Popslash and Disney RPF which later on merged with Music RPF), I use the data of whichever tag has the highest number for that year.
I'll make another version of this next week leaving out the super broad tags like [Genre] RPF and [Country]-pop RPF since almost half of the top 10 each year are occupied by these tags.
Please refer to this post for more bar chart races.
Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

"I gave up on listening to the top 40 years ago."
A lot of older people (and honestly some young adults and teens) are so quick to rag on popular music nowadays as if it's less artistically valuable than music to be released in earlier decades. And I think there are a few reasons for this.
Obviously, every generation is afraid of the music that comes from the next. People hated Elvis and the Beatles and now they're permanently locked in the cultural consciousness. Of course older generations aren't going to like Ice Spice or Doja Cat. That's not the music that was new and exciting when they were first experiencing the world. Music now is featuring ideals, politically and socially, that older generations aren't privy to. The sound of pop music is always going to be shifting to meet the younger demographic. Pop music today isn't marketed toward the older generations, so it's only natural that these people don't understand the appeal.
This brings me to my second point: Music (and art in general) are always made in retaliation to the world we live in. A lot of the criticism that is made of pop music today is that the songs have no substance and are only about sex blah blah blah. Not like back in the olden days when music meant something. (Although, this argument becomes moot when you realize that every single Led Zeppelin song is about sex, but I digress.) Right now, the world is in a state of crisis. We are still in the throws of a global pandemic. Almost every major world power is in a state of political, social, and economic turmoil. Things are complicated. It's only natural that people want to ingest simple things. Think about the steady rise in popularity of short-format video and reality television. Consumers want escapism. Consumers want easy art. That's while simple three-chord songs like Cupid and Boys a Liar are in the top 40 right now.
In order to fully criticize music or any type of art, we have to think about the cultural reality we live in.
Speaking of that cultural reality, I'm sure it's no surprise that another reason for all the criticism of pop music is just racism. But that's a topic for another day.
Another thing that irks me is the idea that all modern music sucks. Of course it doesn't. As always, you just have to search for good music in the places that YOU enjoy. There's been bad, repetitive, meaningless pop music since the dawn of radio. (Looking at you Madonna) and a lot of the elements of music that older people criticize could be completely avoided if just looked outside of the pop genre. Some of the post-punk revival stuff happening right now is amazing. The garage rock and indie pop genres are flourishing. Hell, even singer-songwriter and country are making a comeback. (You can thank Taylor Swift for that I guess.) I just wish older generations wouldn't paint a category as broad as music with such a wide brush.
Ok thats my rant.

Types of String Musical Instruments
String instruments have knitted their musical magic throughout human history. It travels from cultures and generations. From the ancient lyres of Mesopotamia to the sophisticated violins of the Baroque era, these instruments have been integral to the evolution of music.
This blog will take you through the rich canvas of string. It will also remind you about how crucial it is to buy a dedicated string instrument insurance plan to protect your gear, irrespective of its type or family. Let's read on!
Meet the Members of the String Family
Plucked String Instruments: As the name suggests, the plucked string instruments make a sound when you pluck or strum their strings. Some of the best examples include the guitar, banjo, harp, and sitar.
Guitar: It is a versatile instrument that has a long neck and comes with typically six strings, although variations do exist. It is central to diverse musical genres, including rock, jazz, blues, and classical.
Banjo: With its roots of origin in Africa and adopted in the Americas, the banjo features a circular body and four to six strings. It is a prominent part of folk, bluegrass, and country music.
Harp: Characterized by its vertical frame and strings, it is one of the oldest string instruments. You would hear it in classical, folk, and Celtic music traditions.
Sitar: It is a plucked string instrument from India. It has a gourd-shaped body and movable frets. It plays a vital role in Indian classical music, with its intricate melodies and rhythmic patterns.
No matter which type of plucked string you play or own, make sure to secure it with the right insurance policy dedicated to musical instruments.
Bowed string instruments
Bowed string instruments produce sound when you vibrate their strings with a bow. The instruments that fall under this category are:
Violin: With its four strings and high-pitched sound, the violin is a cornerstone of classical orchestras. It also features prominently in various genres, including folk, jazz, and popular music.
Viola: Slightly bigger than the violin and tuned lower, the viola adds depth and richness to ensemble performances. It plays an essential role in classical chamber music and orchestras.
Cello: Also known as the violoncello, the cello has a deep, resonant tone. It is integral to orchestral arrangements, chamber music, and solo performances.
Double Bass: It is the largest and lowest-pitched instrument in the string family. It makes the base of the sound of bands. It is indispensable in classical, jazz, and contemporary music genres.
Tumblr media
Fretted String Instruments
Fretted string instruments feature frets. The latter are metal strips implanted along the neck to mark specific musical intervals. Examples include the following:
Bass Guitar: Similar in appearance to the guitar but with a longer neck and fewer strings, the bass guitar produces lower frequencies and serves as the rhythmic backbone in many musical ensembles.
Ukulele: A small, four-stringed instrument with roots in Hawaii, the ukulele exudes a cheerful, bright sound. It is popular in folk, pop, and Hawaiian music styles.
Zither Family
Zithers are string instruments featuring a flat body with strings stretched across it. They are played by plucking or strumming the strings.
Autoharp: Equipped with buttons or keys that dampen specific strings, the autoharp enables players to create chords effortlessly. You can see them being used in folk and country music.
Appalachian Dulcimer: Originating from the Appalachian region of the United States, the dulcimer has a long, narrow body and fretted fingerboard. Musicians cherish it for its sweet, melodic tones.
Now that you are well aware of the broadness of string instruments, probably, you have also understood how delicate these pieces of art are. Isn’t it? So, if you own a string or are planning to buy one, do not give a second thought to buying a standalone string instrument insurance plan. This may seem just another piece of formal document to you in the first place. However, its benefits go beyond the same. It protects your gear from many unforeseen events that may make you fall into financial doldrums.

Dark Angel Interview: Emery
Tumblr media
For my Dark Angel of the Bullet Club series.
I had previously asked for 'interview' questions for Emery, and I eventually got around to answering them. I'll do the same for Phoenix when I get a moment.
Tag List: @katries @summertimefun1982 @blxxckheart (If you want added to the tag list, let me know)
Food / Drinks She loves a wide variety of foods, only thanks to exploring so much with Kenny and the Bucks during her travels. Stir-fry is amazing, wontons, and some sushi. Just depends on her mood. Italian foods are probably her favorite overall- pasta, pizza and gelato. Seafood is amazing—but only crab, shrimp, and lobster. Emery doesn’t like much of anything else (Squid? Ew. Clams? Double ew.) Spanish cuisine is also really good; authentic is even better. She don’t really like super spicy foods though, it upsets her stomach; and she absolutely refuse to eat mushrooms or anything slimy.
Drink wise, mostly water or flavored water. Occasionally, she’ll drink sweet tea and some juices. Hot cocoa and coffee are amazing; Emery will never turn down stopping at Starbucks. Alcohol, she don’t really drink too much. She don’t like beers or wines—there’ve been a few fruity drinks she’s found that she likes, but only ever drinks 1-2 of them, and even then, there are months, sometimes almost a year in between drinking. She just doesn’t have the urge to drink a lot of alcohol.
Animals Emery absolutely loves dogs and cats! They’re her all-time favorites. There’s a lot of animals she likes; horses, dolphins, monkeys, turtles, birds—the list could go on.
The list of what Emery don’t like is much shorter and simpler. She could live without spiders, especially the larger ones. Mosquitos are highly annoying. Emery also suffers from ophidiophobia – irrational fear of snakes. She’s not been a fan of them for as long as she can remember. Bad experience as a kid.
Favorite Games This is a broad category, so let’s break it into chunks.
Video Games: Elder Scrolls are a big favorite of hers- mostly Skyrim and Elder Scrolls Online. Raft. Sims franchise. Resident Evil franchise. Mortal Kombat is always a favorite of hers. Racing games, wrestling games—she’ll try just about any of them.
Board/Card Games: Poker, Apples to Apples/Cards Against Humanity, Monopoly, Clue – you name it, she will play it! Emery LOVES game night.
Places to Live/Visit She’s only ever lived in a few places. Emery was born in Colorado and lived there up until she was 18. After, lived in California for a while before making the long move to Japan. Now, she currently has an apartment in Florida.
Japan was definitely a top-list place, both living and visiting. The country is just so beautiful and the language is mesmerizing. Emery could listen to Kenny speak Japanese for hours and never tire of it. Italy is another place she has been lucky to visit; stayed there for almost four days due to a layover issue. Absolutely remarkable country, super nice people.
She’s wanted to go to England since she was a little girl—and has had a few opportunities to go, but unfortunately, something always comes up and Emery can never go. Maybe one day…
Favorite Music/Movies/TV Shows/Books Another broad topic that we’ll separate.
Music: Very open to different music- classical, pop, rock, etc. The only kind she doesn’t really listen to is screamo and most rap
Movies and TV: Supernatural is her go to; Doctor Who, Sherlock, Avengers, Once Upon a Time, CSI’s, NCIS’s, Criminal Minds, Forensic Files. She loves crime shows, magical/fantasy, and cooking shows. Also American Ninja Warrior. And don’t even get her started on anime.
Books: Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter. Anything from James Patterson. And a bucket load of manga.
What does she look for in a guy Great body and a nice d---
Nah, just joking.
Emery is a sucker for blue or green eyes, and ‘long’ hair (something she can run her fingers through). Someone who’s funny/has humor, has a sensitive side, makes her feel safe and loved.
Common interests are always nice, but not exactly necessary. He does have to like animals though. That’s a deal breaker there—and she don’t mean snakes. If that’s the only animal he likes/wants/has then it aint gonna work.
Doesn’t have to be taller than her, but Emery does like being picked up and carried around. Piggyback rides are the best thing ever. She’s naturally cuddly and sometimes clingy, so he’s gotta be able to put up with that.
Don’t even get her started on accents or being multilingual.
Another key thing is, he’s gotta be able to help her through the dark times. When the voices and memories start getting to be too much and she start falling down the ‘rabbit hole’. His being able to help her through it, or stop it from getting bad, is definitely something she looks for.
Does she want a family? A family would be nice, but she’s not completely sold on the idea of childbirth. She saw her mother go through some complications with Emery’s little brother and the possibility she could go through the same thing (or worse) scares her. The idea of having a little body running around with her DNA and the DNA of who she loves though, is very tempting. Perhaps one day, with the right person.
What does she like to do on dates and for fun? It depends on the day and how she’s feeling. Sometimes a simple movie at home with popcorn, snuggled under a blanket together is more than enough for her. Or, another home date would be just playing games together, either video or board games. If it’s venturing outside of the home, then she’s all for going to museums, arcades, swimming (only at pools though- she hates swimming in lakes/rivers because the possibility of a snake slithering around her that she can’t see). Mini golf, walking through a park, window shopping, the zoo, or even going to an animal shelter and volunteering for a few hours. She doesn’t do sporting events too often, but for the right person, she would consider it.
(Unique) Nicknames she has for her boys. Kenny: Ken, Kenbear Nick: Nicky, Nemo, Nii Matt: Mattie, Minion, Nii Kyle: Kye, Kye-Rye Riley/El Phantasmo: Phasmo, Rye Damian: Damo, D, Papi Priest, Mi Hombre (my Man) Adam: AC, A-Bay, Chugathon Hangman: Cowboy, Hangy, AP Wheeler Yuta: Yoots Orange Cassidy: Cass, J (like Orange Juice/OJ—but just a J) Darby: Darbs Jay White: Switchblade, Switch Kofi: Koph/Kof, KK Finn: Finnabon Jeff Hardy: Nero, Jeffie Wardlow: Cerberus (3 headed dog, Greek Myth), Wardaddy
(Unique) Nicknames her boys have for her. Kenny: Ree, Angel, Angelface, Kitten Nick: Ree, sis, Matt: Ree, sis Kyle: Ree, sis Riley/El Phantasmo: Ree, shortie, Damian: Ree, Princess/Princesa Adam: Ree Hangman: Ree, Darlin’ Wheeler Yuta: Ree Orange Cassidy: Ree, R Darby: Ree, Cifer (Lucifer, a fallen angel) Jay White: Ree, Princess Kofi: Ree, lil sis Finn: Ree Jeff Hardy: Ree, Reno (Nero but letters are mixed up) Wardlow: Ree, Puppy,
Who started her main nickname, Ree? Kyle, shortly after he started helping train her back in early months of 2014.

👠 and 👂 for the system ask meme!
“👠: how difficult is it for y'all to agree on one cohesive outfit?”
Oh man. It's kind of both easy and difficult at the same time.
Everyone who fronts (regularly) are all some flavor of alterhuman and so we desire to wear things that affirm our identities in some small way. Many of us who front a fair bit have, at the very least, some kind of accessory (or two, or more) that is personally our own. However, our fronting schedule is no schedule at all, and we tend to switch out throughout the day, so wearing the “right” accessory for the right person can be difficult.
However, overall, our system has had a number of negative experiences over our life that make us very self-conscious about physical expression. To make things harder, because of dysphoria buying new clothes regularly is difficult for us. Further, we’re autistic and some of us have texture/touch aversions others in our system, do not. Finally, while we all very in gender, our gender expression leans more androgynous to masculine as it helps with gender dysphoria for the most of us. Those and some other things related to our mental health subdues our comfortability with physical expression relating to clothing choices.
Also, a lot of people in our system don't have a strong preference for clothing choices beyond "it’s comfortable" and "it doesn't take a lot of effort to maintain," so some people just bounce off of whatever everyone else tends to wear.
So, we generally don’t have too much of an issue with clothing.
“👂what kinds of music do you like?”
Overall, our system likes a wide range of music. Of special note is many of us have a love of instrumental music, especially music that has symphonic metal influences. (So, lots of music that could be found searching Youtube for “epic music.”) Paradoxically a lot of us also enjoy LoFi beats and similar (mostly because its something soothing and helps us with our anxiety but also helps by giving us something to listen to without being distracting. Also, it’s kind of a very broad category, but we enjoy relistening to a lot of music from shows/movies/games we like (and also fan-created songs for shows/movies/games we like).
For some kinds of music specific to certain people in our system:
Ocean Watcher, Earth Listener, and Sky Singer are y fans of symphonic metal and power metal bands. (Ocean Watcher and Earth Listener especially like symphonic metal while Sky Singer leans more power metal.)
Kardegray is a nu metal, heavy metal, and heavy rock fan.
Miushra and One-White-Sock are both country fans (the rest of us like it okay but it’s not our go-to kind of music.)
To name some favorites among some specific people.

A Diverse Appreciation for a Diverse World
Everything has value! Cultural and artistic value finds its place in the world, and it comes in countless different shapes and sizes. It can be found in groups of people, lines from a poem, modern and ancient art. It even finds its way in the middle of forests, the interior design of homes, far up between the stars in the night sky. This value can be appreciated in its individual categories, or it can bring forth a deeper meaning once a step is taken back to observe the bigger picture. A diverse world appreciated through a diverse eye can produce amazing results.
Now what a diverse eye may miss are the tiny details. If the big picture is looked at from too far away, some of this value may be missed out on. Sports as a whole, for instance, represents fun and competitiveness that the world shares. However, each player of each team has their own little world of cultural experiences. Each uniform they wear has some artistic meaning. However, no matter how zoomed in or out this appreciation stands, there will always be a lot to appreciate. Choosing to have an open mind comes with its benefits.
Take a look at the world of dancing. There may be thousands of dance movements. It can be done individually, or between small and large groups. It expresses culture and art as one. As I wrote in my “Representative Work” Tumblr blog post, “Dance is also a universal language which I find very interesting, you don't have to be a dancer to understand the intentions of a piece”. Each different kind of dance, whether you are the dancer or just someone watching, is part of this world of expression and hidden language that all people share the ability to understand. Dancing as a whole is a gem in this world, and it can be appreciated whether it’s dancing at a party with loud music, quietly in the middle of a kitchen, even nodding your head while a catchy tune plays at a grocery store.
What connects gracefully to dancing is music, although it might not always be present. And the wide-lens appreciation can follow along. Music is its whole universe with many different genres, each part of the same whole- an expression of emotions or thoughts, that hold cultural and artistic value. Perhaps it is common to have favorite music types, singers, even specific songs. But opening that eye to music types that have nothing directly to do with each other encourages this same appreciation for a diverse world. A good example is my “Musical Theme Playlist” Tumblr blog post, where I listed seemingly random songs, from country to rock to hip hop. A focused viewpoint would show little value in this playlist. But through a diverse and open mind, you can find a broader meaning. As I wrote, “All of the songs that I chose have powerful lyrics that motivate you to keep going and strive for nothing less than greatness. I chose this as my theme because life can be hard and empowerment is something we all need at points in our life”. This playlist conveyed empowerment, but other random song choices can come to communicate love, sadness, chaos, silliness. It explores the broad spectrum of what music really is- just the right thing we need to listen to. Just having that alone is worth appreciating, no matter the genre. It is simply an art we all share.
Speaking of which, art is one of the things in this world that comes in more forms than just music and dancing. It is present in many places, such as architecture, culinary design, home decorations, hair styles, and commonly, paintings. Paintings have been a way for us as people to express ourselves from brush to canvas, pen to paper, stylus to screen, no matter if modern or ancient. It has its spot along where this broad appreciation can flow. In my “Abstract Images” Tumblr post where I discussed my impressions on a piece of abstract art, I noted “The thing that most stood out to me about this particular painting was the choice of muted colors, shapes, and lines. The colors in the paintings are secondary and tertiary colors which are very muted and dark. The colors that Sepehri chose gives the painting a feeling of mystery because those are mostly low value colors”. This may seem like a boring art piece, but finding these things to appreciate the same way as what can be found in crazy dance routines, country music, and other things that seem random all connect to this broader appreciation for the world. It all comes down to opening up a diverse eye to this diverse world. There is much to love. As I first said, everything has value!

10,11,12,19,30 for the ask thing
howdy, thanks for the ask!! (art ask game here)
10: Favorite piece of clothing to draw
probably sweaters! i don't often draw them but i like the soft curves of thick fabric folds. that aside i also like drawing ripped jeans, button-down shirts, and chaps :)
11: Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what
sometimes yes, sometimes no; mostly i listen to my personal playlists (country music. lots of it), but on occasion i'll have a show or youtube on in the background. usually if im not listening to music though i just draw in silence since sometimes any background noise at all can be overwhelming for me
12: Easiest part of body to draw
probably arms, including hands. theyre also quite fun to pose so i dont usually have a hard time with them. i also like drawing teeth!
19: Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)
props! i know this is kind of a broad category, but in general i just like drawing anything that's being interacted with, regardless of how complicated it is, so i always have a good time drawing cars, guns, food, plants, etc etc etc.; if i absolutely had to pick a specific favorite i'd probably say food or weapons (i only recently started drawing food though)
30: What piece of yours do you think is underrated
definitely this one (bright colors & eye trauma warning). look at my evil middle aged man, boy

TOP 10 MUSIC & BAND FANDOMS ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS,FILTERED VERSION (2009-2022)
This bar chart race leaves out the super broad tags like [Genre] RPF and [Country]-pop RPF. You can see this category unflitered in this post.
To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Music & Bands on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, manually filtered to exclude broad tags, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.

Fandom tags that are no longer in the Music & Bands category tag as of posting this are left out of the bar chart race. These tags are usually either miscategorized or already have other tags referring to the same fandom.
Johnny's Entertainment has been left out in this version, since it's the tag for an agency and has many idol groups in its subtags (such as Arashi and KAT-TUN). You can see it rank in the unflitered version.
After much deliberation, 声入人心 | Super-Vocal (TV), a multicategory tags that ranked 6th place in 2020 and 7th place in 2019, 2021 & 2022, has been left out in this bar chart. It's a singing competition, and since American Idol RPF was removed from the Music & Bands category way back in 2013 and could only be found in Celebrities & Real People and TV Shows categories instead, I thought it would be fair in this case to do the same for this fandom tag. It ranks high enough in the Celebrities & Real People category anyway so you'll see it there (when I eventually make a bar chart race for it).

Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

Latin artists marginalized at Grammys... again
Tumblr media
LOS ANGELES
Each time the nominations for a showbiz awards show are rolled out, there are accusations of "snubs" -- but the Recording Academy's history of sidelining Latin music artists seems more pattern than fluke.
This year, not one Latin musician earned a Grammy nod in the Big Four categories, which celebrate the year's top album, record, song and new artist.
Some critics voiced surprise at the slight, one year after reggaeton megastar Bad Bunny made history with the first Spanish-language work nominated for Album of the Year, which lent hope that the Academy was waking up to Latin music's broad audience.
Tumblr media
But those hopes were dashed: in particular, many industry watchers expressed shock that Peso Pluma -- the fast-rising Mexican superstar who broke into the global mainstream with a string of hits this past year -- was left out of the Best New Artist category.
The 24-year-old received his only nomination in the category for -- wait for it -- Best Musica Mexicana.
"By leaving him out of the general-field awards, they aren't just snubbing a lone artist here," wrote one Rolling Stone critic. "They're brushing off an entire new wave of talent that's been changing the musical landscape."
Tumblr media
Reggaeton hitmaker Karol G was recognized only in musica urbana, while superstar Shakira and her collaboration with Argentine producer Bizarrap was completely shut out, as was rising artist Eladio Carrion.
"I felt that we didn't have as many Latin artists and creators as I would have liked to have seen," Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr told Billboard following the nominations reveal in November.
"We have to do more outreach in Latin communities, making sure that we're representing the music accurately. We're hearing from them things that we can do; making sure we have the right amount of membership and representation."
Tumblr media
Latin artists spanning genre have posted strong numbers across the board, but regional Mexican music -- which includes many styles like banda, sierreno, norteno and mariachi -- has grown particularly buzzy, making the Academy's neglect of it all the more conspicuous.
Its rise has seen a new generation of artists fuse traditional corridos -- ballads that became popular more than a century ago during the Mexican revolution -- with rap or reggaeton influences that has translated to chart-topping success.
Peso Pluma has faced some anger for embracing the "narcocorrido" subgenre, which some critics say glorifies drug culture, though many others say narcocorridos are a means of social critique.
Tumblr media
But either way, his work and other regional Mexican styles have a fervent fan base that is transnational, appeals to the young and digitally savvy, and has staying power both on streaming platforms and social media.
"What's happening now is a recalibration, not only of Mexican regional music, but a recalibration of Mexican and Mexican identity in the United States," said Juan Carlos Ramirez-Pimienta, a professor at San Diego State University who specializes in corridos and narcoculture.
Many fans of artists like Peso Pluma are young immigrants to the United States or first-generation Americans, along with plenty of non-Latinos worldwide, many of whom don't speak Spanish.
Tumblr media
"It really has to do with the erosion of English, and American music, as the 'music of the world,'" Ramirez-Pimienta told AFP.
"Pop music is pop music," no matter what language it is sung in, he added.
Just like with pop, rock, hip-hop, country, classical and a number of other genres, Latin music does have its own section of categories among the more than 90 Grammy awards on offer.
And since 2000, the Latin Recording Academy -- which was established as a separate branch of the Academy in 1997 -- holds a ceremony specifically dedicated to primarily Spanish- and Portuguese-language music, the Latin Grammys.
Tumblr media
That gala and the dedicated categories are important for ensuring representation, but they also make it easier to avoid honoring Latin music for its mainstream popularity, said Ed Morales, a writer and professor at Columbia University.
"The creation of the Latin Grammys can be used as an excuse to silo, and reduce the need for representation in the mainstream Grammys," he told AFP.
That said, it is "a major marketing promotional opportunity for the Latin music industry... I think it's been established as an important service," Morales added.
Tumblr media
Both scholars said that the marginalization of Latin music in the granting of industry awards is not dissimilar to the struggles hip-hop artists have faced for decades -- barriers that have only begun breaking in recent years.
"It's the same process of disenfranchising," said Ramirez-Pimienta.
Tumblr media
Morales noted the longstanding contributions of Latin music in the United States, with influences including rock, country and hip-hop.
At the end of the day, for Morales, it's a question of being recognized not just for identity, but for artistry.
"Latinos should not be these perpetual outsiders or foreigners," he said.

ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
JURISPRUDENCE
CONSTITUTIONAL LAW
A branch of jurisprudence that most would consider broad and involved. Constitutional law will require an understanding of the U.S. Constitution in order to comprehend its every possible interpretation and implementation. This topic of law is designed to preserve the relationship between the state and federal government (as well as internal relationships) and protect the rights of its citizens as well. As such, constitutional law will draw heavily from any ruling made in the Supreme Court, which will act as an intermediary between those mentioned.
CRIMINAL LAW
Criminal law will revolve around governmental prosecution of anyone who is purported to have committed a criminal act, as defined by public law. An act cannot be classified as a crime if no precedent has been set by either governmental statute or common law, and suits between two individuals or organizations are considered to be civil, rather than criminal cases.
ENVIRONMENTAL LAW
Environmental law mostly stems from a group of federal enactments passed in 1970 that forced agencies and businesses to take into account the effect of their practices on the environment. The enactments set into effect laws and standards that would protect the environment from public and private actions.
FIRST AMENDMENT LAW
First Amendment law will focus on protecting citizens' rights to freedom of speech, religion, press, and assembly against law enacted by Congress. Litigation is made possible by the First Amendment's right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. First Amendment cases have covered everything from book burning to prayer in schools to Internet pornography.
ADMIRALTY LAW
Also referred to as MARITIME LAW, admiralty law covers such topics as shipping, navigation, waters, insurance, canals — and even piracy. Unlike many other law specialties, admiralty law has a very distinctive niche. It is now under the jurisdiction of the federal district courts. The courts state that the ship's flag determines the source country of the law, which will mean each country is allowed to rule over their own ships and seamen, regardless of the waters.
HEALTH CARE LAW
Since it is primarily the state's duty to maintain public health, most heath laws and regulations are state-based. Federal health law centers on the Department of Health and Human Services, which is ultimately in charge of the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Health care law practice can also cover medical malpractice, licensure, patient rights, and bio-ethical policy.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW
Intellectual property (IP) law has seen tremendous growth in the past decade. It is a general category of law that deals with the acquisition and enforcement of patents, trademarks and copyrights. IP law can traditionally be broken down into three subdivisions:
■Patent law
focuses on inventions and technology.
■Trademark law
is designed to defend an individual's or a company's investment in any distinguishing name, symbol or device.
■Copyright law
deals with the protection of literary, artistic and musical works.
Intellectual property encompasses the exclusive rights to a registered idea, product, or name, and includes anything from words and symbols to Internet domain names. IP law not only deals with unauthorized use of property and plagiarism, but also with the protection of image and personality through use of registered property.
PATENT LAW
Patents grant an inventor a limited period of exclusive rights to a human-made invention or an improvement on an existing invention, providing the United States Patent and Trademark Office deems it worthy of both technical and legal merit. Patent law allows for the protection of every aspect of a discovery, from the ornamental design to the processing methods.
In order to become a patent attorney, you must be admitted to practice before the courts of at least one state in the United States, and must pass the patent bar exam which allows you to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The patent bar exam has a much lower pass rate than most bar exams and requires that examinees possess strong technical backgrounds. Because of this, many patent lawyers have undergraduate (or even graduate) degrees in science or engineering.
