(9/8) prompt: colorful — 982 words (fame au pt.2; ft. drunk and whiny james - pt.1, pt.3, pt.4, pt.5) @jegulus-microfic
Regulus can barely make out the shadowy silhouette of James on the screen of his phone, just the occasional glimpse and the reflection of colorful flashing lights catching on the lenses of his glasses. He’s so close to muting the call, because the loud music of the club that James is at is just shy of annoying, not to mention the fact that Regulus has an early call time on set in the morning. He’s in bed already with only the bedside lamp on and everything. But he and James haven’t been able to catch each other outside of sparing texts every few hours for the last couple days, so when he saw the FaceTime call, he picked up.
He misses his boyfriend, sue him.
James clearly feels the same way, because for what’s now the fifth time, he brings the phone closer to his face just to loudly, drunkenly whine, “Baby, I miss you.”
“It’s just a few more weeks, baby. We’ll be alright,” Regulus mumbles.
It’s a mantra they’ve both adopted since his filming really got underway. One that’s kept them holding on through the harder days of separation. Regulus is in France and James is still finishing the last leg of the band’s tour. In a perfect world, Regulus would be able to follow city to city, but he’s got a job, too.
“Think of the closing show,” He offers as some semblance of comfort.
Their first public appearance, the only true confirmation made by them to the press that they are in fact together. Because despite the fact that it’s been months, and they’ve been dodging rumors and cameras like it’s a second job to them, they haven’t done that yet. Taken that step. They decided the end of The Marauders’ tour was their best bet unless they wanted to wait until Regulus’ next premiere invite (they didn’t; it’s another two months away). Regulus will be flying back to London for the final night of tour, taking a long weekend before his return for his final weeks of filming. James will be going with him.
“What?” James is practically yelling now to be heard, and the momentarily higher volume makes Regulus’ eye twitch.
You love him, you love him, you love him. He reminds himself to avoid irritation.
“James, why don’t I just try to call you tomorrow?” He tries.
Colorful lights flash brighter over the screen, stinging Regulus’ eyes when James brings his phone nearer to his ear, unthinking of the camera facing the club’s ceiling.
“I’ll call you tomorrow,” He repeats, voice a touch too loud for the late hour in his hotel suite.
“No, no, no, wait, hang on,” James mutters quickly, words slurring together a little.
Regulus sighs and turns his face into his pillow while James is distracted. Honestly, he’s exhausted. Did a thirteen hour day of shooting and has to be back at it first thing, but where six months ago he would have hung up on James drunk calling him two minutes into the call, now he’s hanging on to every second he gets. He buries how pathetically infatuated that is of him the best he can. They are together, after all, his feelings don’t have to feel so much like a nuisance anymore.
James ends up outside of the club after a minute, the change in volume stark. The colors dancing over him are gone and instead it’s the yellow of street lamps that illuminate him a bit better on the screen. His face comes into view, glasses slightly crooked on his nose and cheeks flushed pink from the alcohol he’s consumed.
“Hi, baby.” James smiles adoringly at his phone and Regulus feels like he could combust.
His mouth twitches at the edges as he tucks his free hand beneath his cheek against his pillow. “Hi, darling.”
“Miss you.”
“You mentioned that once or twice.”
“Can’t wait to see you. I have airline apps and miles, gonna get a flight to you right now.”
“Mhm, I’m sure you are.”
James pouts. “You don’t believe me.”
“You’re a little drunk, baby,” Regulus notes.
“Can still get on a plane,” James argues.
“You don’t want to be here, I have to kiss my costar a lot,” Regulus teases gently.
Dramatically, James drops his head back on his neck and groans, loud and anguished. And damn it, even that is endearing of him somehow. Regulus is fucked.
“Hate this so bad, Reg,” James complains.
“I know, baby, I know.” A sigh, then a yawn. James is staring at him through the phone when he blinks slowly.
“You’re tired,” He says, brow creased. “Wait, did I wake you up?”
“Probably should have asked that about fifteen minutes ago,” Regulus chuckles. “But no. Was already in bed, though.”
“Miss being in bed with you.”
Regulus doesn’t offer any of the insinuating remarks he might typically. James is drunk so it’d probably go right over his head anyway. Aside from that, the fact is Regulus knows the feeling.
“Soon. A few more weeks. We’ll be alright.”
James sighs, but there’s a lazy smile curled at his lips, yellow light making his glassy eyes shine. “Yeah, we’ll be alright.”
“Now, please—” Regulus cuts off on another, longer yawn before shaking his head where he lays. “Please go back inside and find my brother before you drunkenly wander into some stranger’s arms just because you want a cuddle.”
“I’d never,” James stresses before he abruptly laughs giddily. When the unexpected string of laughter fades, he shines so bright with his joy that Regulus can’t help but smile in return. “I’m dating a movie star.”
“You’re so drunk,” Regulus snorts. “Go back inside. Text me to let me know you’re alive later.”
“I’ll always text you, Reg. Always always.”
“Okay, baby. I’m going to sleep now, alright?”
“I miss you.” Seventh times the charm, apparently.
“I miss you, too.”

dying on the hill we met on | 1.9k words
jegulus oneshot | mostly canon compliant (but regulus is alive) | tbh there's no jegulus til the end but it's worth the wait i swear | james being in his subconscious the whole time | nobody dies i promise it's a play on words
June 26, 1979
James had always liked summer. It was his favorite season for many reasons. The sun was always shining, the breeze just cool enough to balance out the warm temperatures. It's a shame he wasn't born in the summer.
It only makes sense he would want his wedding in summer. A beautiful venue filled with green grass and happy faces, his best friends beside him with massive smiles on their faces.
Sirius looks at James proudly, Remus next to him looking almost as elated as Sirius. Peter leans forward to look at James, his face happy but his eyes dim. At the end of the line, Frank is smiling at him fondly, with an older brother aura.
James looks around at all the people, finding his mother's face in the front row next to his father's, both looking at him as if they're remembering when they had gotten married.
James is happy. Who wouldn't be in this situation? He's marrying one of his best friends with the others by his side. His lovely parents are front row, about to watch a moment in time that will always be remembered as a joyous day.
So why does he feel conflicted? As if there's unfinished business haunting his every decision, waiting for him to make the wrong choice, standing in the shadows to watch him fail. Watching him always.
He makes sure there's still a smile on his face when the music changes. What could he have done differently? What if James had gone with him? Made sure everything was okay? Made sure he came back?
These thoughts torment the part of James' mind that ensures he always appears happy. He keeps his smile, unwavering with the growing tide of second thoughts.
Second thoughts that couldn't be acted upon, even if he wanted to. His mind takes him back to the moment Sirius told him they found a body in the lake. The moment they identified it. It didn't quite look like him, though. They told him that the body was waterlogged, so he wouldn't have looked the same anyway. It wasn't there though. The one specific freckle James had obsessed over whenever he looked at his face. It wasn't there.
The music had slowed, and the curtain of flowers at the end of the aisle had been pulled aside, letting the girl who had once been the one James had wanted most be seen.
She's walking slowly, clutching onto Mary's dad as her escort. Her eyes flick to Marlene, Alice, Emmeline, and Mary, her maid of honor. Then to James. His smile is still on his face, only faltering when he glances over to Marlene. A mistake.
She raises her eyebrow, wondering what could possibly be on his mind other than Lily. She looks at Sirius with a questioning look and he shrugs back before nudging Remus and whispering to him.
"What's up with James?", he asks Remus, who's slightly crouched over, "Marlene's asking."
"Dunno, maybe he has to piss", Remus replies before standing up straighter.
"Are you serious right now?", Sirius retorts quietly.
"No, but I have reason to believe you are though", Remus jokes.
"Not the time, but good one."
"Thanks, I know."
James, who is more and more uncertain with each step Lily takes toward him, risks a glance at Sirius, who was already concerned by Marlene's worries, and is met with an apprehensive look from him.
Sirius raises his eyebrow and tilts his head, a bit like a dog. James' smile is nearly gone.
"It wasn't there", James mutters, almost too quietly for Sirius to hear.
"What wasn't there?", he asks back gently.
"The freckle. It wasn't him, Sirius."
"What do you mean?", Sirius asks tensely.
"He's alive", James says to him, slightly louder than before, "I can't do this anymore. I have to go." He looks at Lily, who's looking at his parents, giddy and grinning. James brings a hand up to his face, feeling warmer and more anxious than ever, and finds his hand to be wet with tears. He's crying. They haven't left his eyes yet, but they're there.
Lily's looking at him again and he's thinking about her and Sirius and him and he realizes something.
He could never do this to Lily. He can't just leave to go find someone who might be alive. She's too good to do this to her. He loves her, just not in the way people would think given the situation.
She makes it up to the altar and Mary's dad goes to sit down. A single tear has left James' eye. Lily watches it travel down his face as the officiant speaks.
James goes back into his thoughts, drowning in the lingering feeling that he's still alive somewhere. Wading in the ever present guilt that encases him, telling him he should have gone with him or convinced him to not go. Drifting in the regret that he hadn't chosen to follow him and that he barely tried to get him to stay, knowing he could never change his mind once he had it made.
The officiant is talking through, going through his long speech about loving someone and he signals for James and Lily to hold each others hands. They do, and he finally says the words James has been waiting for.
"Now, if anybody has anything they'd like to say before I wed this couple, speak now or forever hold your peace."
James holds his breath, willing him to come through the flower curtain, barge in, object, run up here, crash the wedding, anything. Sirius glances at James cautiously, knowing he would never humiliate Lily like that, but also knowing he could never live with himself if he married Lily and lost his chance with his brother.
Not a single person moves. It's as if the world had paused to give them time. To give James time to make his decision, to give Sirius the opportunity to stop James if he moves, to give him time to say 'I object'.
He doesn't though. It's a little funny. He wouldn't have known they were getting married unless someone had told him, but who would have? Sirius surely didn't know, his reaction seemed genuine. Not many people were invited, it's mostly friends and family.
In hindsight, James should have known that he wouldn't have come back anyway. James always knew that he would be the first to leave. You can't get left behind if you leave first. Maybe that's what he was doing when he left for the lake that night. Leaving James first. Letting him down gently by faking his death instead of outright leaving.
James doesn't know what hurts more. Him being found dead or James realizing he's alive and avoiding him. Maybe he's not avoiding James, but staying away for his safety. He was like that. Keeping away so someone he cared for didn't get hurt or caught in the crossfire of his own misdoings.
James doesn't hear Lily start her vows. He doesn't hear the officiant asking James to start his. He doesn't feel Sirius tapping his shoulder to get his attention. He doesn't see the look on Lily's face when he's standing, blankly staring into the distance.
What he does see, though, is a boy. Up on a hill, leaning against a fence, a dark haired boy with his arms crossed is seen, despite all of his efforts to stay hidden.
James can't tell for sure if it's him, but he's not about to let him leave again if it is him.
"I'm sorry."
James moves to leave, but Sirius grabs his arm. He looks up at James with dejection in his eyes.
"Let him go."
James looks back at him, his eyebrows together and his mouth a line.
"I can't."
He looks over at Lily and she nods, "Go get him, James." She steps back and Mary puts a hand on her shoulder.
He smiles at her, "Thank you." James looks back up at the hill. His arms are no longer crossed and he's standing up straight. As if he's meaning to leave soon.
He can't leave. There are so many things James never got to tell him, never got to show him.
James makes his way down the aisle, the symbolism getting to him. Going down the aisle to the entrance is usually meant for couples who just got married, not for one of them to leave for someone else. He never thought of a deeper meaning to things before him. James had really only seen the surface meaning of things before him.
It's not a big hill he has to walk up, but James is feeling winded. Maybe the understanding that he's about to see one person who really saw James, the one that didn't show surface level. Anxiousness is pooling in his stomach, feeling like dread and ecstasy and impatience all in one.
James makes it to the fencepost he saw him leaning against, finding it vacant. He looks around and sees his back turned and walking away.
His expression falters. He's leaving again. James jogs up to him and just walks with him. He matches his pace, swinging his arms in time.
James only looks at him when he's sure he wouldn't notice. He did notice, but he'll never tell James.
"Do you love her?", he asks James.
His voice surprises James. He sounds almost the same, save for a hardness that must have appeared with time and damage.
It takes him a few seconds to respond, his mouth gone dry. "Not the way I did you. She's like a sister, if anything."
They stop by a bench and he sits down, motioning for James to do the same. He sits with one leg folded up under the other, his knee resting on James' thigh.
"Why'd you do it?", James asks, turning his head to look at him while he looks off into the distance.
He takes a deep breath in, then out. "I had to. He threatened to kill Sirius. And you, but he added that bit in later."
They sit there in silence for a few minutes before he leans his head against James' shoulder. James, surprised but not complaining, puts his arm around his shoulder, pulling him in closer.
"Regulus?"
"James?"
"Are you gonna leave again?"
Regulus looks over to James, making eye contact, "Not even if you wanted me to, pretty boy."
"Hold on, I'm the pretty boy?", James looks over at Regulus with visible confusion.
"Yeah", Regulus shrugs and looks back to the hills.
"Are you— Have you ever looked in a mirror?", James asks him with raised eyebrows.
"James I've said this before", Regulus tells him with a flat expression.
"Have you?", he asks Regulus, seemingly distressed.
"Yes", Regulus nods.
James looks over to the hills, then back at Regulus with an amused look on his face, "Okay then, if I'm such a pretty boy, then kiss me like one."
Regulus looks at James, still unimpressed by his antics after two years apart, yet always willing to play along. He takes James' face in his hands and kisses him, James leaning into Regulus, moving his hands into his hair as they move with each other.
Regulus breaks the kiss, his hands still around James, one on his neck and one on his shoulder.
"Was that to your liking, pretty boy?", Regulus asks, a smirk on his face.
"Indeed. It was so good, I think I may have blacked out a bit, maybe you should do it again?", James shrugs.
Regulus rolls his eyes, "Fine."

Hmmm if I were hypothetically thinking of writing a resurrected Regulus fic, would the characters in the know (the ex-dead man himself, Pandora + hubby, and Remus) be open to the possibility of resurrecting other dead characters, hypothetically? Especially Lily and James? Hypothetically, what would be stopping them from resurrecting other dead friends, like Marlene, Dorcas, Evan, and the presumed dead Peter and Barty?
Like, resurrecting Regulus was completely accidental and almost killed Pandora, so they’d have no reason to try again let alone multiple times, right? So, hypothetically, the answer should be no (and is no for Regulus, who doesn’t want to be faced with his ex, his wife, and rip them away from the peaceful afterlife back into danger), right?
…but they have Harry and doesn’t Harry deserve to know his parents since they have a means to bring them back? And don’t they deserve to raise their son?
…also I want jegulily, but that’s second to the logistics of trying to purposely resurrect someone let alone multiple people
…maybe the question can come up when they discover the ring has the resurrection stone. (bc ofc they go horcrux hunting it’s a staple in the genre)
All hypothetically, of course. I have nothing written.

I listened to Sk8er Boi this morning and have done nothing but think of this wolfstar au. ITS A RIFF off the song not a direct interpretation. Ps: they all live in NY
Skater Remus had a fling with a ballet dancer and he fucked him up cause he was like “you’re not good enough for me” when Remus wanted more because he is all scarred from skating . So he’s like got a terrible view of himself now. About everything and about his scars esp the one from a fall that almost ruined his career that runs through his face across his nose and eyebrow. But he stuck through it went on to be big in the skating world even making it to the summer Olympics in skateboarding.
He’s bffs with James who’s an Olympic snowboarder and he’s married to Regulus who used to do ballet full time but now he’s an instructor because they’re going to have a baby. Remus always goes to support James at the Winter Olympics. And he always hangs with Reg when James is competing or practicing. This year Regulus brings his brother who Remus has not met.
And there is Sirius Black and Remus is like “this is the prettiest person I’ve ever seen ever in my whole life”. Sirius still does Ballet full time at the most prestigious ballet company in America the NYCB. And Sirius is obv immediately obsessed with Remus and is like “I’m obsessed with you” and Remus is like…. “Ummm it’ll pass.” (It doesn’t)
James and Reg have Harry the summer after James won the Gold in snowboarding. They make Sirius and Remus the godfathers so they start interacting much more. They become close and they kind of start dating at the beginning of the next year when Harry is 7 months old and Remus is like *internal monologue* he’s gonna leave me I just have to take what I can get.
So they’re dating and spending all their time together. He watches Sirius’ performances and practice and Sirius goes with him to the skate parks and watches him and tells him how much he likes certain tricks. They babysit Harry together at one of their apartments. Usually Sirius’ cause his is definitely more baby safe. He honestly spends most of his time there anyway. Remus is falling in love but doesn’t want to scare Sirius off. Sirius of course loves him but he doesn’t want to spook Remus after it took him so long to convince him that he actually wanted to date him.
A year and a half flies by and it’s time for the summer Olympics Remus made the team and everyone comes to support him. Remus falls hard on the half pipe at a practice and is carried away bleeding. Sirius finds him in the medic tent and Remus is cleared of a concussion or serious injury. But he can feel his scar on his face has opened and gotten bigger and longer. And his face is wrapped up in bandages. Sirius is crying.
So Remus thinks he’s going to break up with him “I understand if you want to stop seeing me I know I’m hideous with these scars”
Sirius is like ??? “What??? I don’t care about that I care that you’re okay?? I love you!! I was scared to death when you fell because I didn’t get to tell you!”
Remus is shocked “You love me?”
Sirius sighs “You don’t have to say it back”
Remus kisses him even though it hurts and says “I love you so much I just didn’t think you would love me back.”
And then they’re both crying and then James and Reg and Harry are there. They got his Remus’ injury update from the nurse Poppy so they know he’s cleared. After making sure Remus really is okay James goes “Who said it first?”
They share a look before Sirius raises his hand. And James pumps his fist and says to Regulus “you owe me 10 bucks!!” Cue an eye roll from everyone except Harry who pumps his little fist like his dad.
Remus goes on the win the gold medal and dedicates the award to his family and the love of his life Sirius.
When they get back to New York and Sirius gets back to work with a shiny gold band on his left ring finger complete with a tiny diamond in the middle of an engraving of a star.
One of the lower level dancers that had never made it onto a performance. And was just around cause of family connections came up to him. “You know I used to date your skater boy.” He sneered.
Sirius took a deep breath and held his hand out to admire his ring he turns his nose up at the man “You mean my Olympic gold medalist husband?” He clarifies “Hmm he’s never mentioned you.” And turns away.

The Things We Never Said-
Chapter 2
By drowninginthoughts on AO3
“Hey, Reg, wait!” he says quickly, most likely out of fear Regulus will leave before he gets the opportunity to say what he needs to say. Regulus toys with the idea of simply ignoring him and going home but he doesn’t have it in him. Something about James Potter just makes Regulus cave instantly every time. Tugs at his heartstrings a little too much. It's a struggle for him to even keep his closed off demeanor.
“What?” he spits out.
“I just wanted to, uh, say thanks again for showing up at the hospital. I didn’t get to say this earlier but that meant a lot. I don’t know what I would have done without you there.” James is slowly inching over towards Regulus so that they can easily face one another.
Regulus makes a noncommittal noise of recognition. To passerbyers it probably looks like a normal, everyday conversation but to him it's filled with misery. The knowledge that this will probably be one of the last times they speak one on one. To be fair he thought that when the door closed behind James, ending them as they knew it, but this feels different. Feels like something else. Like the change is finally setting in. The conversation is just happening solely to torture Regulus, reminding him of the everlasting effects of his actions. Of what he turned his back on and how much he regrets it each day.
