14. Hello! I'm in the mood for explorations of bad Lan Xichen, or Lan Xichen bashing. It's common to see JC bashing, but really, poor old JC was screwed by his family and lied to, I'd be enraged too. But how could LXC be THAT stupid? What happened to trust but verify? He's either truly truly stupid, or completely complicit. Maybe he loved being JGY's special one so much? I dunno. But no-one is that stupid. And the Lan sect has so much to answer for, with its cruelty and hypocrisy (they were at Qiongqi path as guards) (what, they didn't report to their sect leader? Really?). I understand angry old fart LQR a lot better, he doesn't care about anything but the sect and has no connections outside the sect, I can forgive him. But LXC just ignores his other sworn brother and his own little brother far too much. He is equal to if not more of a villain than JGY, who's just fighting for a place in an unjust world. Dear listener, three months ago I began posting music by recently deceased artists and long-dead bands that were, all of them, exceptional in some way. I haven’t stopped since, and with this post I hereby pronounce my quarter-year long rediscovery of dead bands to be officially complete… and lucky you, I’ve got a plump Maraschino cherry to place on top of this layered ice cream cake. Folks, crank the volume, smash play, and be placed in salivating awe at one of the most influential dead bands of all-time. Imagine a musical act that is completely mediocre in every way; just some shitty, generic modern band the likes of which you hear ad infinitum on Top-40’s radio. Now, add to that same non-specific act a lead lady vocalist that has a voice on par with Billie Holiday. Back that superb voice up with instrumentalists hungry to deliver something that sounds new and exciting to the world, subtract the pretentiousness and insincerity of modern music, and cube the equation with infinite collective creativity and genuine inspiration. What you are left with is the almighty and immortal Portishead. As English as roast beef and hailing from Bristol, this group hasn’t made an album in about fifteen years and only technically lives on through ultra-rare live performances. In just under two decades from the mid-90’s to 2008, this group managed to produce not mere music, but genuine lightning-in-a-bottle magic. The members were all very motivated by old timey film soundtrack LP’s, leaving a lot of their tracks sounding like a tune from a film noire. Whether they liked it or not, they had a major hand in popularizing trip-hop, a highly experimental genre (in the 90’s anyway) which relies heavily on hip hop tempos mixed with soul, jazz, funk, or whatever form of electronic music you want to throw into the fusion. This was also a band that just kind of burned out; despite their notoriety and mega-successful presence in the industry, the members of this collective were just fallible people at the end of the day, and apparently suffered from extreme exhaustion by way of constantly recording and touring. If you spent your time in studios cranking out some of the highest quality music available at the time, you’d be exhausted too. This is Biscuit from 1994’s Dummy, and it is merely one of many, many outstanding works from their contemplative, well-executed and downright industry-changing catalog. Truly quality music (just like any quality entertainment; movies, television, art, etc.) should reveal something true and perhaps tragic about the human condition. Portishead excelled in this area. It doesn’t matter if they were only around for a moment in time. Their music is TIMELESS.

I don’t generally post many ultra-famous acts on this page unless given a motivation. Here’s my motivation; Portishead changed music on the planet Earth forever. They’re more goth than the whole of modern goth music. They’re trippy-er than the entirety of trip-hop. And, if anything you do in your life has 1/10th the positive impact on the globe as this here musical act, you, my friend, have earned my respect for merely existing. Below Biju Jie Satō : At the start of her adventure

A mysterious science group in Japan has come up with an idea to get visitors to Tokyo to stay longer and have a more profound visit at the same time.

They have invented a machine that, at a quantum level, turns foreigners from outside Japan into true citizens of Tokyo physically and mentally for a whole week. Next, they put these machines into vending machines around Toyko (because they also own a snack food company).

Here, we see Betty Jane Smith from Chicago, Illinois, who, to her shock and surprise, has been turned into a Japanese woman who lives on Harajuku Street. What happens next?

Betty Jane Smith, once a Chicagoan, now stands on Harajuku's bustling streets—a bewildering and exhilarating metamorphosis. The quantum machine’s hum still resonates in her ears, its invisible tendrils weaving her essence into the very fabric of Tokyo.

Monday: The Awakening Betty blinks, her eyes adjusting to the neon kaleidoscope. The air smells of sweet crepes and cherry blossoms. She glances down at her transformed self: a Japanese woman with raven hair adorned by an oversized bow. Her kimono whispers secrets of centuries past, threads of tradition woven into its silk.

The locals pass by, unfazed by her sudden appearance. They, too, wear their eccentricities—their neon hair, platform shoes, and glittering accessories. Betty’s heart races. She’s no longer a tourist; she’s a resident. The vending machines beckon, offering matcha lattes and rainbow sodas. She hesitates, then selects a can of sakura-flavored tea. The taste blooms on her tongue—a memory she never had.

Tuesday: Lost in Translation Betty navigates the labyrinthine streets, her Japanese fluency a patchwork quilt of phrases. She stumbles upon a cat café, where feline eyes regard her with ancient wisdom. She orders a latte and pets a calico named Tora. The café owner winks, as if knowing her secret. Betty wonders: Is she the only quantum convert?

Wednesday: Harajuku Fashionista Betty embraces her new identity. She shops at Takeshita Street, donning Lolita dresses and fishnet stockings. Her reflection surprises her—a fusion of Betty and Tokyo’s spirit. She poses for photos with tourists, their smiles genuine. She’s no longer an outsider; she’s part of the Shibuya crossing, a pixel in the city’s heartbeat.

Thursday: Shrine Whispers At Meiji Shrine, Betty prays for clarity. The torii gates frame her uncertainty. She asks the kami: Why her? The wind rustles the sacred trees, and a paper fortune flutters—a mix of kanji and English. “Embrace the ephemeral,” it reads. Betty laughs. She’s living a haiku, seventeen syllables of wonder.

Friday: Neon Dreams Betty dances at a techno club, her pulse synced to the neon strobes. She meets Yuki, a fellow quantum traveler. They share stories over sake—Yuki from Birmingham, Alabama, Betty from Chicago. They laugh about their borrowed lives, the transient magic. Yuki whispers, “We’re stardust, Biju-san. Here today, gone tomorrow.”

Saturday: The Farewell As the week wanes, Betty stands at the quantum machine. Its hum beckons her back to Illinois. She gazes at Harajuku’s lights—their ephemeral brilliance. Yuki hugs her, and they exchange email addresses. “Remember,” Yuki says, “Tokyo lives in you now.”

And so, Betty steps into the quantum stream, her heart a constellation of memories. Chicago awaits, but Tokyo lingers—a neon imprint on her soul. She boards the plane, her bow slightly askew, and whispers, “Sayonara, Harajuku.”

The science group’s experiment succeeded: Betty Jane Smith, once a foreigner, leaves Tokyo as a citizen of dreams.

Folk Magic Band - s/t LP (Jazz Al Folkstudio) - Black Sweat Records reissue of 1976 LP - the "magic" is some spirited free jazz!

Folk Magic Band represents one of the most interesting and original, yet lesser-known experiences of the italian jazz scene of the 1970s. In the legendary alternative environment of the Folk Studio in Rome, an open 18-members lineup is inspired by the free jazz of its time, a music that encompasses the whole world and its polychromy of sound. The echo seems to resonate the pan-ethnic motifs of Don Cherry and his Organic Music Society, but also the spiritual jazz of Pharoas Sanders and the orchestrations of the Sun Ra Arkestra. The textures chase a chinese melody, ignite with african scents and south american jungles, flow into fusion violin drifts a la Archie Shepp's Attic Blues or Mingus-like orchestral sections. The fascination of this collective affair still strikes for its playful and ironic nature, still impressing for its strength and willingness to open and influence new directions.

Florida, My Two Dads, Michael/Joey, explicit. This was written for a 'there was only one bed' trope request, with a bit of 'meet the family' thrown in, and I had such a blast writing it.

Thermonuclear Reaction (Fusion). Criminal Minds, Hotch/JJ/Will, explicit. This was such an exercise in iddy self-indulgence, and I think it might be my best fic. After the season 11 finale, I felt like things could go two ways - JJ could divorce Will's ass and get with Hotch, or she and Will could bring Hotch into the family. This is the poly version, complete with a secret affair, paternity issues, and Will discovering he has a slight cuckholding kink. (I'm delighted that other people actually read this one and liked it!)

Sneaking in 2-as-1, Wickes' World and Betwixt and Between, The Magnificent Seven TV series, Chris Larabee/Ezra Standish, explicit. The first two stories of what I think will be a five story series that rewrites the show with an added element of sympathetic magic. (Tarot cards with actual visions, hexed bullets, a ghost wolf pack, preachers who can actually exorcize actual demons.) I'm just so in love with this little world I've created!

Another 2-as-1, Subject, Unknown and open your eyes, the first two stories in my Criminal Minds-Anita Blake Vampire Hunter fusion series. So far this is mostly case-focused, but it's not gen, with Hotch/JJ being the eventual main pairing. (There's also Hotch/Morgan, Hotch/Garcia, JJ/Will, a little Morgan/Garcia, and other mentions along the way.) Gosh, it's just fun to add some vampires and shapeshifters to the mix and see what happens!

Finally, Cherry, by far the shortest story on this list. Stargate Atlantis, McKay/Sheppard, explicit. Set about six months after the end of the series, John's on a mission to comfort Rodney after his breakup with Keller...and, well, clearly the way to do that is by offering a blowjob, right?

ranking books ive read in 2023:

i actually read this year!!! so im ranking books (and their series) too :-) no gifs for this one because. yknow. theyre books. also im not including manga bc ive only read one this year and its dunmeshi and it would take first place. easy as.

6. the guncle (steven rowley, 2021)

brief summary: the book is about a man who lost his partner some years back, and is now known as the “guncle” (gay uncle) to his niece and nephew, who he takes care of for a few weeks while their mother is on vacation.

i was gifted this book as a joke gift last year, as the title’s like a syllable off from an in-joke in my friend group, but i decided to give it a read anyway. its the first modern, non-fantasy, non-scifi story ive read/watched/played in YEARS. not a whole lot stuck with me, as it’s simply not my genre of story, but it was very sweet.

5. the worst journey in the world (apsley cherry-garrard, 1924)

brief summary: an account written by cherry-garrard 11 years after his return from scott’s antarctic expedition. the author was primarily involved in the months-long task of retrieving emperor penguin eggs for study, and the journey to and from this point are what he calls the worst journey in the world.

ive discovered this year that antarctica fascinates me. everything about it from its landscapes to ecology to how to survive there is incredible to me. i decided to pick up the cherry-garrard book as a first-hand account of it, and its truly worth it to learn from someone who was there back in 1911 what it was actually like (without being focused on the race to the south pole). cherry-garrard has a very interesting writing style that really helps to flesh out what the experience was like, and the sheer amount of first hand sources he took from his fellow expedition members gives it a really rounded view. like anything from back then theres a few things that aged super poorly, but as a source of information i really enjoyed it.

4. project hail mary (andy weir, 2021)

brief summary: a man wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there, but with the ship failing around him.

my dad read this book in 2 days (unheard of for him) and immediately handed me his copy. i read it in a day. the author’s writing style is very entertaining, and while it’s a bit too quippy for my tastes, the actual story and how its paced had me glued to it. great use of real-world physics in a scifi story, which is what really stood out to me.

3. the priory of the orange tree (samantha shannon, 2019)

brief summary: on one half of the world, a spy-turned-lady in waiting gets close with the queen who’s the descendant of the one who sealed away the dragons centuries ago. on the other half of the world, a young woman tries to become selected to become a dragon-rider.

i learned after reading this book that apparently its one of those booktok ones… i picked it up on a whim last year when the cover caught my attention, and decided to read it while i was on a work trip earlier this year. i really enjoyed it! there were a lot of twists and turns in the story, but none of them felt like they were there just to surprise you. the POV characters had such different views about a lot of things that it was interesting to piece together the real story despite their biases. the romance was nicely developed, and the ending of the book felt natural and satisfying. all i can really ask for in a book of this size

2. the wax and wayne series (brandon sanderson, 2011-2022)

brief summary: (spoilers for the mistborn series) this four-book series takes place over a century from the end of the mistborn series. the magic system, allomancy, exists in tandem with the industrial age. the main character is a lawman from the equivalent of the wild west who’s returned to lead his family house in the city after his uncle’s death, and has to navigate new social norms with how much he doesnt want to be here.

the magic and industrial fusion of this series is amazing. sanderson has always been meticulous about creating and maintaining the rules of his magic systems, and allomancy is incredibly well done. the whole “wild west lawman moves to the city” story isnt something i’ve ever loved, but these books do a decent job of it, and it comes across as more anti-nobility than just colonialist. the mysteries in this series are attention-grabbing, and the supporting characters get good development too (even if it takes a few books for it to pay off). im doing a character-specific shoutout to steris, who i am so very fond of despite how underrated she is in the first few books.

1. the mistborn trilogy (brandon sanderson, 2006-2008)

brief summary: the world is divided into the elite class that can use allomancy, and the skaa, an enslaved class which can not. the main character finds out she’s one of two known skaa who are considered mistborn — people who can use all allomantic powers, instead of just one. she gets dragged into a resistance cell planning to take down the leader of the [NAME], the all-powerful lord emperor, despite their low, low odds of success.

i just love brandon sanderson’s work, but man this series is incredible. its fascinating to see the main character develop along with the story. she makes mistakes and shes deeply flawed and doesnt know herself at times but the impact she has on the world and the way the world changes her in return are just so so well written. the allomancy system is so well developed, as is sanderson’s modus operandi, and it’s so thrillingly used that it feels like im practically there. incredibly immersive. the twists and the lore reveals always fit perfectly into place while still surprising me. the world of scadriel is detailed and so easily pictured despite its bleakness, and as things change in the world through the series its difficult to look away from. 10/10
