Secret Mutant 2019 Round-up

So this was one of the first ever fandom events I’ve ever joined in and I wrote a couple of fics, both for Cherik and other miscellaneous pairs! In no particular order:

no such thing as bad publicity (4562 words) - Cherik, mutual pining, oblivious idiots being oblivious, grumpy protective Erik Several months ago, Charles Xavier and his twenty mutant students were kicked out into the streets after the Xavier mansion was seized by Sebastian Shaw to settle an old debt. At the same time, Erik Lehnsherr, founder and CEO of Lehnsherr Steel was embroiled in a publicity scandal that resulted in a backlash against his business. In an attempt to repair his reputation, Erik charitably opened his penthouse duplex to Xavier and his children. The kids are loud and hyperactive, and Xavier too damn kind and earnest and hopeful, but eventually they settled into an uneasy peace.

Now, months later, the publication of a provocative magazine article threatens to throw everything into chaos once more...

with eyes downcast (2099 words) - Kurt Marko/Charles, underage, character study The listless turn of days.

(Charles grows up. He is missing something, but he doesn't know what.)

The Time for Home (4040 words) - Cherik, sci-fi AU, old(er) mutants in love, DOMESTIC FLUFF!!! The relationship between diplomat Charles Xavier and engineer-turned-vigilante Erik Lehnsherr is a tumultuous one. However, once a year, they enjoy a week of (relative) peace and quiet with only each other for company. This year sees them on the planet Didyma in the depths of winter.

Sowing the seeds of discord (691 words) - ESN/Charles, background Cherik, non-con (non-explicit), mythology AU Charles is the golden apple of Greek mythology. En Sabah Nur wins him.

Bonus: Technically not part of the challenge, but for one of my Madness prompts I wanted a harem AU of some sort and ended up plot bunnying myself for it so hard I started building a whole new AU with a friend of mine! Come check it out, we’ve done a metric fuckton of world-building and we’re starting a fic collection!

carrying the torch (6261 words) - Cherik, Shaw/Erik/Charles in all combinations, non-con, harem AU, angst and H/C Erik has lived under Shaw’s thumb for most of his life after being captured in a failed rebellion. Charles is a new arrival to the harem, and already he has an agenda of his own. The bond they develop comes as a surprise to both of them, but now that they have each other, can they survive Shaw’s attentions?

AND FOR THE GIFTS I GOT oh my goddddd i’m so excited about them!!!!!! @ikeracity was my gifter for the main exchange and she wrote me the longest and THE BEST au with Charles as a runaway from ESN, and Erik as a hunter sent after him. Absolutely brilliant characterization with both Charles and Erik being wonderfully competent BAMFs slowly learning to trust each other and work together. I love love love the way ESN was written, and there are a few surprise characters involved ;D (and of course, plenty of cuddling and sharing body warmth! eeeeeeee)

all your love is sunlight by ikeracity (29961 words) Over twenty years ago, the world ended an inferno. From the ashes of what was once a modern world, survivors gathered what remained and slowly knit civilization back together. The Keep is one of the largest new cities in the north, ruled by the iron fist of a mutant named Apocalypse. He keeps an inner circle of favored mutants around him, a mixture of some of the most powerful mutants to walk the earth. But when his most prized treasure, Charles Xavier, escapes from the Keep, he sends wanderer and hunter Erik Lehnsherr after him.

An easy task, Erik figures. But soon enough, he discovers that Charles is much more of a handful than he'd bargained for. Their tumultuous meeting sets into motion a chain of events that will lead them deep into unfamiliar territory--in both the world and in matters of the heart.

for madness i got 4(!!!!!) different fics dealing with Christmas time at the mansion, all of them wonderfully bittersweet as Charles struggles through the dark days after Cuba/pre-DoFP and finds love and support from the people around him. Please read the first two in particular if you’re in the mood to read fics centered on the platonic love and loyalty between Hank and Charles, because there’s simply not enough of that relationship out there!

And I Wouldn't Have It (Any Other Way) by librata It's 1970, and Charles hasn't been dealing with a decade of loss with as much grace as he could. Hank wants to help.

There's Only Us by flightinflame Being alone in the mansion on Christmas, their children sent to war, is breaking Charles's heart. Luckily, one other resident remains.

i love you straightfowardly, without complexities or pride by lavenderlotion They were mere feet apart, and all Charles wanted was to get closer.

Missing Pieces by librata After coming home from Cuba with what's left of his little family, Charles is doing all he can to forget and move forward. Too bad a certain someone keeps pulling him back.

A little bit late *cough* but here are our personal faves from the 2017 Secret Mutant Exchange and Secret Mutant Madness! Fics from both collections are thrown together and in no particular order. Since these are all written works, please make sure to check out some of the fabulous art that was posted too! 

The Stryker Institute by TurtleTotem [Cherik, PG13]

Erik is a juvenile delinquent determined to cause as much trouble for his baseline oppressors as possible. Charles is the king of the school, leading the students and charming the teachers, trying to keep the peace. They hate each other immediately. Or... something like that.

Mod note: Great dynamics with an uncommon but still spot-on characterisation of Charles. It’s very well-written and bleaker than most highschool AUs, therefore I’d absolutely recommend it to people who usually avoid this trope as well.

En Sabah Nur is woken from his long sleep. He does not wake alone.

Logan didn't blame him. Nina was the most precious thing in the world as far as Lehnsherr was concerned and damned if Logan didn't agree with him.

Mod note: 30k of intelligent, slow-burn, feel-good fluff that lets its characters work for their happy end and makes the ride more than worthwhile. In other words: fanfic dreams come true.

Canon-divergence during First Class. They're both closeted to the other, but as fate would have it, decide to 'unwind' on the same night at the same underground gay bar.

Mod note: Hot porn that includes great introspection into Erik’s insecurities and some amazing period slang/code. I loved every paragraph of it.

Principles of Sharing by citrinesunset [Charles/Hank/Moira, M]

Charles is thrilled to reconnect with Moira, and Hank likes seeing him happy. But when the three of them go on vacation together, it isn't clear where things are heading.

Mod note: The pairing is unusual but it’s explored so well here and Hank’s feelings are so intriguing that I really wanted to see more of this constellation and how it might work out in the future. Also there’s a an entertaining amount of smitten and cheesily flirty Charles. 

Dream Sharing by Unforgotten [Charles/Jean, age difference, NC-17]

Jean doesn't have feelings for the Professor. He doesn't have feelings for her, either. So why do they keep having sexy dreams together?

2. What’s next on your ‘to-read’ list? (Fan fiction or otherwise)

I still need to read Pet! :O Though admittedly I spoiled myself most of it because I enjoy snooping around and reading meta too much. B) And I’m thinking about going through the Charpocalypse tag to do “research” for the Rare Pairs Fest. :3c

4. What fandom’s/ship’s fan fiction do you read the most?

In the last few months I’ve probably read more Lamen than Cherik (while writing much more XMFC than CaPri fic), but it pretty much depends on my mood, and the AU/trope I’m craving at the moment.

18. Do you have a fic reading/writing routine?

I’ve recently acquired an e-reader that allows me to burrow into my sheets and read in bed before sleeping, without having to squint up at the display of my phone. *contented sigh* If I feel daring enough, I’ll read through breakfast. :D

Unless I have deadlines to make, I usually write for a couple of hours a day on my phone in the afternoon, during my walk in the park, while most of my editing is done on my laptop (preferably in the morning, when my mind is clearer).

19. What’s your favorite character headcanon?

I love thinking about DoFP Charles flirting (with anyone, really, from gingerly flirting with Erik to amicably frenching Logan – because, let’s be honest, if the guy knows him from the future, he *knows* him, right?) just to make sure Erik knows he’s missing out. ;D

Vampire AU and 19th Century AU (which I took as Regency frankly XD)

In this world, the existence of vampires is known and they part of society. They can propose to humans a contract in which the human accepts to live with the vampire and be their source of blood. 

It is not as good a prospect as marriage, but sometimes, it is the best one can hope for. 

When Charles damaged his legs in an accident, his chances of a good marriage went from quite good to practically non-existent. He has a good name, a great education, but his family’s fortune has been lost by his step-father, so he even had to stop his studies.  

His disability means most jobs are not possible. Even tutoring, which he thought would work, has been a failure as every possible family found excuses after excuses not to hire him. 

As his family puts all the pressure of securing a future on Raven’s shoulders (who is not happy about it), Charles is tempted by an unexpected offer.  

A rich vampire, En Sabah Nur, has offered him the position of blood source. Since marriage seems out, it is the best life he can expect to have and he wouldn’t be a burden for his family anymore.

Charles/En Sabah Nur, past Charles/Erik, warnings for infidelity and emotional manipulation

En isn’t due back until late that night, and Charles spends the hours vacillating wildly between pacing the length of their shared house and trying to bury himself in his work. He fucked up. He fucked up badly, there’s no getting around that. He’ll tell En the truth, of course, that was never in question – but it doesn’t make the wait any easier to bear.

(And yet… And yet, he can’t shake off the feeling that all of this was a test. But that’s not very fair, is it? Even if En had sent him to Erik as a test, it’s Charles’ own fault for failing that test in such a spectacular manner. It’s really nobody’s fault but his.)

He must have dozed off without realizing it, because the next thing Charles knows, he’s jolting awake to the feeling of a blanket being draped over him. En.

Charles is half-sitting, half-lying on the couch, some of his papers lying scattered on the floor – he must have dropped them in his sleep without realizing. En is standing over him, the downy blanket still partially in his grip. There’s a smile on his face. Charles smiles back, but it comes out weak and strained.

“You’re home.” He sits up, rubbing his eyes. “What time is it?”

“Late.” En’s voice is a low, measured rumble. Dark as molasses, Charles had always thought – the sort of voice he can’t help but want to sink into, wrap himself up in. “We should go to bed.”

Charles is not a saint. He is tired, his heart aching with loss and fear and anger. It’s very tempting to allow En to help him up, pull him into a kiss, and sweep him off to bed. He only has to close his eyes and let it happen.

But he can’t.

“En…” He draws in a deep breath, running a hand through his hair. If he doesn’t tell En now, he never will. “We need to talk.”

En watches him, his eyes dark and fathomless. “It can wait, I’m sure. It’s very late.”

Charles huffs out a noise that isn’t quite a laugh. “You’ve always made it very hard to say no.” He shakes his head. “We really do need to talk, En.”

En chuckles lowly. “And it’s equally hard to say no to you,” he says. He settles on the couch next to Charles, the very picture of quiet confidence. “Talk to me, Charles. What is troubling you?”

Charles had spent all night rehearsing this conversation in his head. It’s almost a relief that the time had finally come to have this confrontation in the real world. He takes another deep breath, willing the calm of absolute focus to fall on him. “I went to Erik earlier today. Things went rather – differently, compared to what I had planned. I’m so sorry. There’s no good way to say this. I wasn’t faithful to you. I deeply regret it, and if you wish to sever all ties with me, I will of course leave right away.”

There is, of course, the temptation to grovel. To beg for forgiveness, for another chance, it will never happen again, I promise. But he’s made his choices. Now he must live with the consequences.

For several long seconds, En is silent. Not angry, no, he’s not someone quick to move to anger, but his expression is stern and forbidding.

“Do you want to leave?” He asks at last.

“No!” The denial bursts from Charles before he can contain himself. He shakes his head, forcing himself to calm. “No.”

“Then you’ll stay with me,” En says firmly. His fingers rest against the underside of Charles’ chin, tilting his head up. “I am disappointed. Very disappointed. But, I confess, your infidelity does not surprise me.”

“What?”

“You and Erik Lehnsherr had the sort of bond that comes once in a lifetime. That much is plain to anyone who knows the two of you. It was inevitable that you would succumb to it, although I had hoped otherwise. Human nature is what it is.”

Now is hardly the time for a philosophical debate, but Charles shakes his head anyway. “No. There’s no excuse for my actions. Human nature or not, I should have been better than that. Erik – Erik was right about me.” And isn’t it ironic, that Erik should be the one to lead him into the very crime he had accused Charles of?

“Erik Lehnsherr was a fool blind to the facts in front of him.” En’s gaze remained locked on his. “If he truly knew you, he would never have believed the accusations levied against you.”

“Erik is…” Charles stops, biting his lip. Even now, his first instinct is to leap to Erik’s defence. Will that ever fade, he wonders? “This isn’t about Erik.”

“It is,” En counters. “But if you would rather not talk about him, I will respect your decision.”

“I just don’t understand how you can be so calm about all of this.” When he compares En’s reaction to Erik’s…

“It is as I said. I am disappointed, but your decisions were not unexpected.” En cups Charles’ head in his hands, bending down to press a kiss against his forehead. His lips are warm. “You love him.”

Charles closes his eyes. “I thought I did.”

“You love him,” En repeats. “But love on its own isn’t enough.”

“…No. It wasn’t.”

En kisses his forehead again. “I think you learnt that tonight, or you would not have returned to me.”

An uneasy chill settles over Charles. He can’t resist giving voice to his earlier suspicions. “You were the one who asked me to talk to Erik. Was it all a test?”

“Charles…” En draws back, looking disappointed. “Do you think so little of me? I urged you to speak with Erik because you needed to find resolution. That, I cannot offer you.”

Chastened, Charles’ gaze drops to the ground, but he can’t quite quell his nagging doubts. “Terribly selfless of you.”

“I do care for you,” En says quietly, grave. “Ours is no fairytale romance, but I find our arrangement enjoyable. I would like to see you flourish, Charles. But only if you can leave the past where it lies.”

He doesn’t know if he believes in En, but Charles relents for now, too tired and heartsick to argue any further. “I won’t go back to him again, if that’s what you’re asking. It’s over.”

It’s been over since the night Erik threw him out. Charles had simply failed to accept it until tonight. He doesn’t protest as En gathers him close again, pressing a final kiss to his lips.

“Let’s go to bed.”

Bad Movie but not the worst x-men movie, sadly. Jean does literally nothing, you could replace her with some powerful weapon and you wouldn’t have to change many things. If that wasn’t enough, the solution and climax of the story was she begging to be killed, and oh, poor Wolverine who had to kill her 🙄 besides, they kill Charles as well >:(

16. Tell us one of your headcanons!

I think I’ve shared this one before, but I have a headcanon that as a child, when Raven just arrived, Charles manipulated everyone so that he could give her a perfect family. When Raven realized this, she got really scared, and that’s why she made him promise not to use his powers on her. Also I think Charles is constantly struggling not to control everyone to his will.

6. What is your favorite mutation?

For practical reasons, telekinesis or teletransportation, but I have a serious fascination with telepathy
