SECRET MUTANT 2017 RECS!

A little bit late *cough* but here are our personal faves from the 2017 Secret Mutant Exchange and Secret Mutant Madness! Fics from both collections are thrown together and in no particular order. Since these are all written works, please make sure to check out some of the fabulous art that was posted too!

The Stryker Institute by TurtleTotem [Cherik, PG13]

Erik is a juvenile delinquent determined to cause as much trouble for his baseline oppressors as possible. Charles is the king of the school, leading the students and charming the teachers, trying to keep the peace. They hate each other immediately. Or... something like that.

Mod note: Great dynamics with an uncommon but still spot-on characterisation of Charles. It’s very well-written and bleaker than most highschool AUs, therefore I’d absolutely recommend it to people who usually avoid this trope as well.

The Moment of Waking by still_lycoris [En Sabah Nur/Charles Xavier, PG-13]

En Sabah Nur is woken from his long sleep. He does not wake alone.

Mod note: Oh delicious Apocalypse mindfuckery! I can never get enough of it.

three’s a crowd by annejumps [Azazel/Charles/Erik, mild dub-con, NC-17]

Charles catches a glimpse of what his oh-so-casual fuckbuddy and argument partner Erik really wants in bed.

Mod note: Oooof, the very very hot Cherzazel (?) threesome you never knew you needed!

Fast West by fullmetalcarer [Cherigan, PG13]

Logan leant on the bar waiting for Lehnsherr. It wasn't like him to be late. Maybe he was having trouble finding someone to look after Nina. He was fussy about who he'd leave her with. Logan didn't blame him. Nina was the most precious thing in the world as far as Lehnsherr was concerned and damned if Logan didn't agree with him.

Mod note: Super cute polyamorous child-rearing in the Wild West is all I’m saying.

and yet must be by dedkake [Cherik, PG13]

Erik brings Charles to a safe house after an attack on the mansion.

Teacher’s Note by Gerec [Xavierine, PG]

Logan has been getting weekly updates in note form from Laura’s teacher for most of the school year. When they finally meet, he finds the image in his head of Professor Xavier to be nothing like what he expected.

Mod note: Laura as a cheeky (and very wolverine-y) match-maker is the cutest thing ever.

breaking the ice by annejumps [Cherik, NC-17]

It's Erik's first winter in Westchester Castle, and he's not sure his new husband even wants him around.

Mod note: The age-old question of what happens when feelings arise in an arranged marriage and one’s beautiful husband only seems to have eyes for other people?

‘Tis the Season by ikeracity [Cherik, M]

Ten years ago, Charles and Erik were bitter enemies in college. Now Erik runs a mutant community center, and Charles is a successful physician. When the community center launches a volunteer-run free clinic focused on mutant health, their paths cross once again. Old wounds are reopened, and old grudges spring back to life. But will old feelings reignite as well?

Mod note: 30k of intelligent, slow-burn, feel-good fluff that lets its characters work for their happy end and makes the ride more than worthwhile. In other words: fanfic dreams come true.

A Gentleman in Distress by bocje_ce_ustu [Cherik, NC-17]

Canon-divergence during First Class. They're both closeted to the other, but as fate would have it, decide to 'unwind' on the same night at the same underground gay bar.

Mod note: Hot porn that includes great introspection into Erik’s insecurities and some amazing period slang/code. I loved every paragraph of it.

and to all a goodnight by afrocurl [Cherik, PG]

Charles has no choice but to talk to his grumpy neighbor when he's locked out of his apartment.The solution is not what Charles expects.

Mod note: Fluffy Christmas match-making attempts from Lorna!

Walking in a Winter Wonderland by TurtleTotem [Cherik, PG-13]

Charles hasn't seen Erik since their devastating breakup ten years ago. He's certainly the last person he expects to run into at a Christmas lights display.

Mod note: Dumb boys finding each other again and Kurt being the cutest little angel.

Principles of Sharing by citrinesunset [Charles/Hank/Moira, M]

Charles is thrilled to reconnect with Moira, and Hank likes seeing him happy. But when the three of them go on vacation together, it isn't clear where things are heading.

Mod note: The pairing is unusual but it’s explored so well here and Hank’s feelings are so intriguing that I really wanted to see more of this constellation and how it might work out in the future. Also there’s a an entertaining amount of smitten and cheesily flirty Charles.

Dream Sharing by Unforgotten [Charles/Jean, age difference, NC-17]

Jean doesn't have feelings for the Professor. He doesn't have feelings for her, either. So why do they keep having sexy dreams together?

Mod note: Sexy dreams indeed, oh boy. Sizzling hot telepath porn.

Secret Mutant 2016 - Main Collection

Sorry for the long wait folks, but here (finally!) is our list of favorites from the Secret Mutant Exchange 2016! As always, we encourage you to check out ALL the amazing fic/art by the talented contributors!

If It's Cloudy or Bright by pearl_o [Cherik, R]

It's too late to write back now, Erik thinks. Not after all this time. But he would--he would like to see Charles again, he thinks.

Mod Note: This fic is gorgeous and atmospheric, conveying such a perfect sense of both Erik’s isolation and self-denial in the context of the time period (post- WWII).

Fifty Dollars and First Impressions by pocky_slash [Raven/Angel, Cherik, PG13]

Angel's not thrilled at the prospect of spending her Friday night on a blind date with her boss' rich boyfriend's sister, but for fifty bucks and a nice bottle of tequila, even baby-sitting Trust Fund Princess can be bearable.

Then they meet. And suddenly, it's a lot more than bearable.

Mod Note: Funny, a little unusual rom-com style fic with some amazing Angel & Erik rapport.

Natural Gifts by annejumps (Jean/Erik/Charles, NC17}

Mod Note: Modern, powered AU where Charles and Erik run a PR company and Jean is their intern. Hot, sexy (and surprisingly tender) threesome that is beautifully written.

Tethered by fabeld [Cherik, PG13]

After the death of his wife, Erik leaves his daughter in care of Charles and his school. He roams far but he always finds his way back.

Mod Note: This is a brutal one. It hurts, but it hurts so good!

Cellulose Acetate by bocje_ce_ustu [Charles/Logan, past Cherik, R]

At first it is terrifying and, in a way, heartbreakingly beautiful, not unlike watching a star dying in fast forward.

Mod Note: This fic is a gorgeous, if painful exploration of what it means to lose your sense of self; doubly terrifying for a telepath who can so easily get pulled into the minds of others. Logan is gruff but tender, and Charles’ POV is heartbreaking.

In Sickness by Unforgotten [Cherik, PG13]

Decades ago, Charles would have given much for the chance to be at Erik's side when he was sick. Now that they're both in their nineties and on the run from Sentinels, there's still nowhere he'd rather be.

Mod Note: Old mutant husbands are always a favorite, and this fic really nails the sometimes sharp, yet comfortable (and comforting) relationship between Charles and Erik in the dark future.

I say that fate should not tempt me by pearl_o [Charles/Jean, R]

Conversations, chess games, dreams--the months following Apocalypse give Jean a lot to work through.

Mod Note: The depth and complexity of Charles and Jean’s relationship post-XMA is really well explored, and the open ending leaves us breathless for more.

Society's Anxiety by phalangine [Cherik, R]

The day Charles Xavier's soulmate counter reaches zero is also the day he meets Erik Lehnsherr. It never occurs to him that that might mean something.

Mod Note: A very interesting take on the soulmate trope; the reveal of the how and why it took them so long to get there is heartwrenching, making the subsequent happy ending all the more deserved.

this sky, too, is folding under you by Nokomis [Gen, PG]

Nice things keep happening to Kurt. He wants to know why.

Mod Note: Kurt’s confusion over his presence at the School is charmingly funny, and his awkward relationship with Mystique (and the bittersweet reveal of their connection) makes this fic a delight to read!

trying to convince myself (that it's alright living without it) by nextraordinaire [Cherik, R]

Running from unicorns hadn’t been in the work description when Charles’d applied for the research position, but from reading all the reports about the ‘rather aggressive behavior’ they showed towards researchers in general, it shouldn’t have come as surprise.

Mod Note: Super trippy and with a great sense of humour this fic is really a creative and different addition to the collection.

for the love of food by dedkake [Cherik, PG13]

Charles is a struggling single father. Erik teaches him to cook real meals for his son.

Mod Note: Cooking lessons by Erik Lehnsherr with some funny and sweet romance added. Charles really deserves this, even though he only fed his kid lunchables for the longest time.

Secret Mutant Madness 2016

It’s that time year again! Here are our personal favorites for the Madness Collection, but definitely check out all the fics as they are excellent!

And we’re still working through the amazing Main Collection at the moment so watch for a post on that soon!

Positions of Power by Unforgotten [Charles/Jean, R]

Charles refused to sleep with Jean a while ago, citing reasons such as their age difference and the fact that he's her teacher.

Jean, though, begs to differ.

Mod Note: There’s been a number of excellent fics since XMA, exploring the very interesting (and intimate) dynamic between the two telepaths. We particularly enjoyed this fic for the twist referred to in the title...

A Merry Joining by pearl_o [Erik/Magda/Charles, PG13]

Erik always insisted they didn't need a third partner in their marriage, but Magda is thrilled when he reconsiders.

Mod Note: Another EXCELLENT trend is the uptick of Erik/Magda/Charles fics post XMA; this one is adorable, with a verse where trios are the accepted relationship norm instead of duos!

The Widow by Unforgotten [Erik/Magda, R]

Several years after D.C., Erik meets a widow and her young daughter.

Mod Note: We love, love, love this fic so much oh my gosh! What a wonderful ‘missing scenes’ fic that deals with the how of Erik and Magda meeting post DOFP. And Magda is wonderfully drawn here; you’ll have no doubt whatsoever why she’s a good match for Erik after reading this fic!

Janus Called by afrocurl [Cherik, PG13]

Charles has too many thoughts on the nature of his soulmarks.

Mod Note: A short but incredibly moving fic that packs a hell of a punch!

We Told Stories in the Dark by lilacsigil [Charles+Raven, PG13]

Raven and Charles pick their way through the strange world of adults, making sure that no-one discovers their secrets. The adults, however, have haunting secrets of their own.

Mod Note: This fic warms my Charles+Raven sibling loving heart! Addressing their relationship from the time Raven shows up and Charles gets her adopted by the Xaviers, it gives us a wonderful and moving look into the dynamics between Brian, Sharon, Charles, Raven and later Kurt. Definitely read this if you love Charles & Raven!

If At First by Unforgotten [Erik/Magda/Charles, R]

It was Magda's idea for Erik and her to sleep with Charles...but it wasn't part of her plan for the sex to be very, very bad.

Fortunately, she's figured out how to fix it.

Mod Note: A alternate universe post XMA fic where Magda and Nina comes to the School with Erik. It made us laugh, and is also incredibly (and surprisingly, in a good way) hot to boot!

Hey! Just a fast q! What's your current favorite apocalypse-fic. May or may not include apocalypse (the characters), but just in that universe? Thank youuuuu

To be honest, I haven’t read a lot of XMA fics to date, mostly because I didn’t want my own fic of XMA deleted/missing scenes to be overly influenced by what others have written :D BUT…here are a few that I REALLY loved!

Pairing: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier

Windows Without Glass by Yahtzee

Charles would have met Nina, someday. Erik would have made sure of it.

After the end of Apocalypse, Charles and Erik begin a slow courtship, without either of them realizing it.

After Apocalypse, Charles and Erik sleep together—but it’s way too soon for Erik.

AU to X-Men: Apocalypse, specifically the ending. When En Sabah Nur is finished with the world, there isn’t much of anyone or anything left. That leaves Charles in a poor position.

His bedroom door opens with a brief gesture of her hand. She closes it behind herself.
