i love how people interpret characters in rwby in the most bland and boring way possible

they take jaune, a deconstruction of a overtly "alpha" dude (lets be real he was a bit if a tryhard loser at the beginning) with a lovely sense of non toxic masculinity (healer, developing emotional intelligence, consumer of respect women juice) and turns him into some sort of haram enjoying chad.

they take yang, someone burdened with incredible responsibility that created both a sense of maturity and deep seated insecurities and turn her into a bubbly bimbo

they take ruby, whose relentless positivity is both a boon and a burden and who is deconstruction of the chosen one trope (she may have a special ability but without everyone else she would be absolutely dead by now) and turns her into small happy child who is the only one who can save the world.

(i'm sure this applies to other characters but this is just off the top off my head)

it's like being served a plate of deliciously seasoned fried chicken and saying you know what would make this better? if i scraped the breading off and put some mayonnaise on top.

That is something I've noticed for a long, long time. There are aspects of the FNDM that HATE how complex the characters have turned out to be. A common one I've heard is "Yang isn't fun anymore."

They wanted RWBY to play it safe and be this stereotypical fantasy fighting school anime because that's what they expected. You see, they don't actually like thinking about things. For all their talk about characters with 'gray morality' they can't handle it when the choices the protagonists have to make are complex.

I feel like a lot of us came into RWBY from the opposite direction. If it had stayed a school anime with unchanging static characters I would have lost interest ages ago. Seeing these people change, evolve, survive pain and trauma but still be heroes has been a privilege.

If you want a bologna, American cheese and mayo sandwich on white bread then RWBY ain't for you. It's a feast with many complex flavors and nuanced experiences.

As always, RWBY deserves a smarter audience.

By time we actually get to the story, he has became a little less intense in his punk rock obsession, maybe it’s just cuz everyone got used to it

I just want to mention, the cabin is actually pretty big, but it feels small cuz there are so many people

In case this wasn’t a given, there are many farm animals, lots of chickens and a small herd of cows, two very mean goats named Ram and Kurt, a farm cat named Thomas ( he is a very distinguished gentleman), and mayhem the Britney spaniel.

Canon really should've explored Zayday more in general but put these two together and there's actually such a tragic story there and I'm obsessed with it. Was she there to see Grace's breakdown. Did she leave Kappa the same time Grace did. Do you think Zayday ever gets asked about Grace. How often do you think she thinks about Grace in Stanford. How do you think she feels when Chanel's able to tell them it was a Devil in her car. How do you think she feels when she tries to visit and she's told Grace isn't there. I still would love to know where pairing them up in S2 came from but also I am not complaining one bit. They're so weird they're adorable they complement each other so oddly well.

Made that bit more interesting in Devil!Libby AUs or our little idea where Hester sends only Chanel to Palmer but there's some questions worth asking about these two's relationship that canon doesn't really answer. Wish canon had stuck to their deal about outliving Chanel given that not only gives something to their dynamics with Chanel but ofc their dynamic with each other too.

Sadie/Chanel:

This is another duo we actually have a good amount of unanswered questions about but at the same time what canon gives us is enough to make fair guesses that still fit with their characters. It's a real shame S2 dangled Sadie over whatever tone-changing cauldron they threw Cassidy in because S2 had more than enough of a chance to have her interact with the others if it had pushed to get as much into each episode as S1 did (Ghost Stories is my favorite example of that)

Chanel/Libby:

Another Libby ship made that bit more interesting in Devil!Libby AUs but they're fucked up and fun to mess around with and I can understand the old fandom's focus on them. The questions for the prev two go for each of the Chanels pre-S1 it seems but they're major AU potential. Wish canon acknowledged the things it set up for them more.

Gigi/Wes:

Affectionately I hate them so much and it's not Gigi's fault whatsoever she's done nothing wrong here. I do like how cute their first scenes are and their little talk in the classroom in Chainsaw is still a great moment for Gigi but Wes is such a prick and his absolutely ridiculous character-butchering is hilarious and also canonically Wes is... a footnote in Gigi's story. The focus of her story in canon's present timeline is her relationship with her kids. I think she should be allowed to kill him a few times in hell.

Unit Teambuilding - Lodge Sycamore

My wife is gonna love that it’s Bulbasaur. I kinda love that it’s Bulbasaur.

General Overview Lodge Sycamore is...*sigh* a primarily Grass-type damage dealer, with some backup Poison. It’s fine. His primary damage is Leaf Storm, with Sludge Bomb as the coverage. He gets X Sp Atk, and a 1MP trainer move that gives +2 sp def/speed/crit. It’s not...terrible, but capping any particular stat is a challenge for him. As a result, he’s fairly team support reliant. As you may also notice, Leaf Storm on a Grass-type Striker. Immediately, we have to compare to Gardenia.

Gardenia has much higher special attack, which immediately made me assume she had the edge. And...well, she kinda does. I’ll try to explain. My preferred Gardenia set involves Grand Entry. I feel it eases a lot of setup requirements for the team, notably allowing her to run EX Rosa to take first sync and really power up those attacks. This cuts into her power, because you’re not taking Superduper Effective 2. As a result, if Sycamore is operating at peak efficiency, his move damage is slightly higher than Gardenia’s, with significantly more power behind his sync. What it takes to reach that full potential, however, is demanding. The foe must be poisoned, and Sycamore needs to maximize his special defense and his speed in one set. This is a really tall order, as he also needs an extra point in crit, and ideally help with special attack as well, and no unit buffs all of these things. Thanks once again to DeNA for that Roxanne and Liza grid. So his teambuilding considerations are much harder to account for. But on the flip side, Sycamore has Impervious, and therefore no restrictions as far as his Leaf Storm needs. Gardenia is heavily reliant on Sun, so if Blaine runs out of MP, it’s over. But, to lead to the last back and forth, Gardenia can reasonably run Weathered Warrior for an extra 10% over him, and if she foregoes Grand Entry to take Superduper Effective 2, she’s just stronger than Sycamore, even at his best. There’s a lot of back and forth arguing, and the ultimate end is that...he keeps up with Gardenia, who I feel is one of the best commons in the game right now. That’s not a small feat.

To add to Sycamore’s ongoing chad behavior, he’s got backup Poison damage in Sludge Bomb. To give a comparison, it’s...about 80% as strong as Looker’s Poison Jab on-type. Off-type, it’s still a bit weaker, and because there’s no Hostile Environment, he’s only half as effective at hitting the Poison chance. There’s also the issue of Roxie. Roxie, much like the Gardenia situation, has much higher base stats than Sycamore, and an equivalent base power move. Roxie may not have a grid yet, but when she acquires one, all she’ll need is 50%. Toxic Power 3 and Superduper Effective 2 will be sufficient for Roxie to outdamage Sycamore on Poison. And if she gets Hostile Environment, she’ll have a better poison rate too. And again, this is considering max potential Sycamore, which is much harder to set up than Roxie, who literally just needs Hop.

Overall, Sycamore’s a unit with some solid potential for an F2P unit, covering both an over-saturated type and a very rare typing, but not quite shining in either. He’s not a bad pick in either, and I legitimately think he’s one of the better Lodge options given how he’s keeping up with Gardenia, but your big hurdle is going to be teambuilding, so that’s where we turn our focus.

Team 1: Lodge Sycamore, BP Janine, Koga/SC Rosa This is the team. Honestly, Grass or Poison, it doesn’t matter, this is the F2P team. BP Janine has Team Sharp Entry, allowing Sycamore to hit capped crit with one use of his trainer move. Her trainer move increases special attack to help alleviate some of his setup, and even provides a bit of speed for him. Her trainer move also, notably, boosts evasion, allowing Koga to operate at max potential as well. Janine and Koga both have a high Toxic chance, which kicks off Sycamore’s multipliers. And as the final boon, Koga’s Venoshock has Mind Games 9, which debuffs the foe’s special defense per use. This team is incredibly capable.

However, I have to note it: if this is Grass-damage, SC Rosa. She needs that little bit of special attack, and gives +1 crit to the team with her trainer move, then hits for massive debuffs on special defense each shot. It’s overwhelming Grass-type damage.

Team 2: Lodge Sycamore, Roxanne, SS Lyra For Grass-type damage. By stats, Roxanne is an excellent partner to Sycamore, providing the special attack he needs generally, and the special defense/speed combo for his multipliers, all in one move. The only hiccup is he needs one more point of crit. This can come from anyone with Dire Hit All or Team Sharp Entry...but let’s just acknowledge that SS Lyra has Grassy Terrain and a huge flinch rate in addition, making them a fairly potent core.

Team 3: Lodge Sycamore, Allister, Marley Allister and Sycamore can function as an alternative Poison-type core, with Allister having guaranteed Poison off of Sludge Bomb. Allister can also provide +2 special attack, while Marley provides Team Sharp Entry, topping off his offensive needs. Marley also provides speed, which kicks off his natural Ramming Speed multiplier. Note that this team cannot reliably buff his special defense, unless you used this for Grass Damage and took Acumen 9 on Leaf Storm.

Final Thoughts Honestly that first team is really his bread and butter set. BP Janine and Sycamore work beautifully together, and the presence of Koga with the debuffs and extra Toxic application really makes it all come together. But he works well with Roxanne as long as someone helps top off crit, and has options around Poison damage as well. It’s hard to get all his multipliers active, but he’s trying his best, and his best ain’t half bad.

Calia grew up in Annapolis, Maryland and was always over at her aunt and uncle’s house.

Chase Stoke, from Outer Banks, is her older cousin and the 2 are really close. They refer each other as brother and sister when asked.

She had her son Grayson September 16, 2020 which he shares with his “Uncle Chase”.

When she told her parents that she was pregnant, they kicked her out, and Chase let her move in with him.

Moved to Newark, New Jersey when Grayson was eight months old.

Grayson’s father wanted nothing to do with him.

Jack is the first person she met when moving to New Jersey, living across the hall from him.

They instantly hit it off, claiming to be long lost twins because they were practically the same person (even with her being older than him)

Jack has been dying to set her and Quinn up with each other.

Has met Jack’s family aside from Quinn.

Calia and Drew are the closest of Chase’s co-stars with Madelyn coming in second.

She & Grayson have yet to miss a Devil’s home game unless one of them is sick or they go visit Chase.

Most people call her Cally instead of by her government name.

She hasn’t spoken to her parents in over four years, choosing not having anything to do with them after they tried to take Grayson from her, claiming that she was an unfit mother.

Grayson often calls Jack ‘Ack’ or ‘Uncle Ack’.

When Luke moves to Jersey to live with Jack, Grayson instantly takes a liking to him and started calling him ‘Uncle Moose’ after hearing Jack call him that.

Calia acts as an older sister to Luke.

Began modeling in 2021 to make money to support Grayson.

All of the New Jersey Devils player instantly love both Calia and Grayson when Jack introduces them.

Besides Jack and Luke, Nico, Alex, John and Dawson are Grayson’s “uncles”, and they all spoil him.

Jack taught Grayson how to ice skate.

She loves any variation of the color blue, but he absolutely hates the color pink.

She doesn’t like to watch horror movies, but she will watch the Insidious Movies, and Halloween.

She really wants to meet Chad Michael Murray, seeing as she had a huge crush on him.
