In the last two decades, there has been a growing body of literature on trans health in India. However, most research is limited to HIV/AIDS and primarily focuses on trans women. Studies on trans men or transmasculine identities and their healthcare needs and experiences in India have received little scholarly attention. Even globally, the literature on trans men’s health is relatively scant, with existing studies conducted mainly in Western countries. There exists a dearth of government data and statistics on trans men in India. The only attempt to enumerate the transgender population was made by the national census, which categorised them as ‘other.’ The census estimated 4,87,803 transgender people in India. However, several transgender activists have argued that this number is a considerable miscalculation and an inaccurate representation of the entire transgender community in India. Moreover, the lack of official data on trans men also risks under-allocating funds for much-needed welfare programmes. Moreover, trans men experience direct and indirect discrimination in healthcare settings. Such experiences include being asked invasive or inappropriate questions about their bodies, invalidating their gender identity via misgendering, deadnaming, and being denied healthcare or receiving low-quality care. Sometimes, it also includes physical mishandling and verbal harassment by the hospital staff and co-patients or not being allowed to enter certain hospital wards or spaces. [...] For many trans men, the family becomes the first space for mental and physical violence and outright rejection of their identity, with instances of forced heterosexual marriages or corrective rape. Vinay (name changed), a 30-year-old trans man from Punjab, says, “Family says ‘you’re ruining our reputation, get married, have one-two kids and then everything will be fine.’ They even use rape as a measure saying ‘you don’t know who you are, and when it happens, then you’ll know [your true sexual orientation].’”  Many have to deal with uninformed healthcare providers unwilling to treat them because of their gender identity. Lack of knowledge amongst medical professionals and poor social understanding of trans men means that trans men often have to self-advocate and explain their health-related issues and gender identity to medical practitioners who constantly challenge or dismiss their identity. This self-advocacy and mental effort to explain or justify one’s gender identity and expression often leads to emotional exhaustion. Soham (name changed), a 24-year- old trans man from New Delhi, recounts his experience of going to a hospital,  “The doctor came and shouted my dead name. There were a lot of people in the emergency room and I remember feeling numb for a second…He shouted, ‘Is this you? Yehi naam hai aapka?’ (‘Is this you? Is this your name?’)…Then he literally pointed at my chest and said your chest is so flat, do you have your periods? I was numb and I didn’t say anything. I didn’t get my medicine, I didn’t tell him my problem, I just went home and I locked myself in my room for a week.”
— I Didn’t Get My Medicine, And I Locked Myself In My Room For A Week (Trans Men Are Invisible in India's Healthcare) by Arushi Raj and Fatima Juned

Voices from the Balcony, part 2
Luke and Hagar Nicklson: a Black Revolutionary War Soldier and his Wife
Since learning (and seeing with my own eyes) that there were rough, uncomfortable pews set specifically apart for people of color in the balcony of the 1757 Harpswell, Maine, meetinghouse, I have been trying to learn the names of the people who sat in those pews. It has been challenging, but I have made some discoveries in the past few weeks.
Tumblr media
(above, rough-hewn balcony pews in the Harpswell Meetinghouse)
After some digging, I was able to access a typescript copy of the church’s records. The issue with transcribed copies of original documents is that the reader doesn’t know what information has been left out by the transcriber. But I dug into the copied records anyway.
Tumblr media
(above, Harpswell Meetinghouse)
One church record caught my eye. It was for the marriage of Luke Nickerson to Hagar Cozens on November 12, 1772. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Samuel Eaton, the pastor of the Harpswell meetinghouse. The woman’s name, Hagar, was one often given to enslaved women of African descent in 18th-century New England. I felt I should research this family.
I was amazed by what I found. Not only were Luke and Hagar Nickerson people of color and Harpswell residents, but I learned that Luke was a Revolutionary War soldier. More than likely, when Luke and Hagar Nicklson attended church at the Harpswell meetinghouse, they would have had to sit on the benches set apart for people of color in the northwestern corner of the balcony.
When Luke was an elderly man, he applied for a military pension from the United States government (pension file S37270, which can be accessed via subscription at ancestry dot com). He was granted the pension, and his application files can help us understand what his experience in the military was like. (N.B.: It’s worth mentioning that Luke’s surname seems to have been a strange source of confusion. Although Luke clearly signed his name “Nicklson” in his pension application, others seem to have misheard it consistently as “Nickerson.”)
Tumblr media
(above, Luke Nicklson’s signature from his pension application)
Luke began his military service in early 1777 in Captain John Reed’s company, Colonel Ichabod Alden’s regiment (7th Massachusetts). He remained with the same company for his entire three years of service
Tumblr media
In the spring of 1777, having marched with his company almost 150 miles from Harpswell to Cambridge, Massachusetts, Luke was struck down with smallpox. In the isolated community of Harpswell, he likely had never been exposed to the virus before. Deadly smallpox outbreaks were rampant in the Continental Army, weakening the troops and dramatically slowing their progress throughout the mid- to late 1770s.
Luckily, Luke recovered and was able to make the march that summer to New York: first to Peekskill, then Albany, Stillwater, and in the autumn, to Saratoga, where, his pension application reveals, he “was at the Surrender of Genrl. Burguyne’s Army and their received a wound in his thigh by a Musket Ball.” A fellow soldier from Luke’s regiment testified that Luke spent time in hospital recovering from his injury.
In 1778, an inventory of the clothing given out to men in his company shows (below) that Luke received a shirt, a pair of breeches, stockings, and a pair of shoes. Had he been wearing his torn and bloodied breeches from Saratoga all this time?
Tumblr media
(above, inventory of clothing given out to Pvt. Luke Nicklson, 1778)
On January 15, 1780, Luke was honorably discharged and made his way back to Harpswell.
It is hard to trace Luke for the 20 years after his return from war. He was enumerated in the 1800 US Federal Census in the neighboring town of Brunswick as part of a family group of 8, though the names of his other family members are not listed. By 1820, when he applied for his military pension at age 75, his family group had telescoped down to 3.
Luke told the pension examiner he held no real estate, and when asked about his personal estate, he claimed a single cow. “I live in a small log house,” he continued, “I have no income.” Hagar, his wife, was 66, Luke reported, and though suffering from rheumatism she was “able to work some.” Despite their advanced ages, Luke and Hagar were responsible for “a small boy” named John, who was only 8 years old. It’s possible John was their grandson, though Luke didn’t reveal their relationship. “I have no other family,” he stated, with a finality that suggests a deep, unspoken loss.
On May 4, 1829, Luke Nicklson died. His grave lies in west Brunswick, Maine, on private property. In the 1930s, a veteran’s headstone was placed on his grave. Today, the current property owners carefully tend his gravesite, replacing the American flag every year. I have not yet been able to discern what happened to Hagar and John following Luke’s death.

A Note From Dr. James
Dearest reader,
I have always believed that transparency in academic research is of the utmost importance. It only makes cens(us. You'll understand the joke in a moment) to release this information to the public.
This project, funded by the Institute for Higher Education, is part of a larger release of pre-democratization documents to show changes in government structure. However, this record is of a peculiar manner: it is relevant to a region known as Lower Valley, which is largely uninhabited and very rarely included in government data.
This record, a series of reports recorded by an author known only as Census Enumerator 71795, depicts a region of our nation that is not only rarely seen, but depicts a fantastical, almost unbelievable picture of the life and culture in the secluded Lower Valley area.
Although some of the Enumerator's claims are highly suspected to be embellished, such as the presence of one of the long extinct dragons and a prevalence of what seems to be witchcraft, we believe he depicts a mostly honest look at the life lived in this region nearly two centuries ago.
We hope you enjoy, digitally transcribed for your enjoyment, Reports on the Lower Valley Census Bureau
Most sincerely,
Dr. Hamish James
Dr. Hamish James is an associate professor of History at the Institute for Higher Education. He specializes in pre-democratic history, particularly that of law and lifestyle. When not in the Institute, you may find him on beaches and in forests with his wife and cats.
Thanks is due to the Institute for Higher Education, the Educational Management Bureau, and the Lower Valley Historical Center.

Altered Census Records
Navigating genealogy platforms has its challenges, and recently, I encountered a situation that sparked reflection.
While I appreciate the collaborative nature of free platforms, I've observed instances of users altering historically accurate information.
For example, imagine retrieving a record to use in a citation from a free platform: the 1900 US Federal Census, from Burleson County, Texas, only to discover that someone has inaccurately changed it to Briscoe.
It's essential to recognize that while family names can be misspelled by the enumerator and ages often fudged by our ancestors, place names are critical in tracing our ancestors’ footsteps.
In this case, the alteration is more than just a minor adjustment; it involves distinct locations with no historical connection.
This experience underscores the importance of being vigilant in our contributions and to encourage the prioritization of accuracy when sharing information.
In such situations, it becomes crucial to advocate for the use of accurate primary sources and official records from the repository that maintains the integrity of our family histories.
By sharing specific examples, like the unfortunate alteration from Burleson to Briscoe County, one can understand the challenges faced by genealogists and family historians.

Here's a fun little thing i found: Federal census of the year 1870 of Ross County, Ohio. Enumerator broke protocol to note of James Madison Hemings (mixed race son of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings), the quoted note reads: "This man is the son of Thomas Jefferson!" I adore little pieces of history like this. Like, this isn't even necessary to put down in a census. Why is this in a census? Other than that, this was a pretty cool find.

The Millses in County Tipperary, Ireland
Tumblr media
Map is courtesy of "Map of Ireland, Compiled from the Surveys of the Board of Ordnance and other approved Documents By J. & C. Walker 1838" and first verse of "The Tipperary Christening" is courtesy of an Irish genealogy site. Ballysheehan, near Cashel, is pictured in the map above, the location where John Mills said he was born.
As noted in my family history, Mills family members were living in County Tipperary, Ireland, including John Rand Mills and others. The Mills family has established roots in Tipperary. [1]
In 1766, a census recorded a Protestant man named Jno (either John or Jonathan) Mills living on Cashel Rock and a papist woman named Margaret Mills, living in Mealiffe. This census was, as irelandgenweb describes it,
the largest religious census...when each Church of Ireland minister was requested to provide a listing of the members of each denomination in his parish.  Although some were completed as requested, many ministers provided only the details on Church of Ireland parishioners, and omitted Catholics, Presbyterians, etc.  Others provided a complete survey of all local inhabitants, including family names and the numbers of children in the household....Parishes in this instant are Church of Ireland parishes which are much like the civil parish borders in later years.
Sadly, no one named Mills is listed in the 1821 census fragments. However, they are listed elsewhere. They were listed in applotment books for tithes, which were a "unique land survey taken as a way to determine the amount of tax payable by landholders to the Church of Ireland," with the books representing "a virtual census for pre-Famine Ireland. In the original enumeration, each landholder was recorded along with details such as townland, size of holding, land quality and types of crops," ranging from 1815 to 1838.
This post was originally published on WordPress in May 2018.
Specifically, in the tithe books, for Middlethird Barony, there were nine Millses mentioned, which I have re-ordered by first name, then surname, rather than surname being first.
Tumblr media
As I have noted earlier on this blog, the John Mills who landed in Warren County was undoubtedly one of the two John Millses who were living in Ballysheehan. Digging into the data further, on can narrow it down by parish. This shows that there are three Millses living in the Ballysheehan parish: John (in Peake), John (in Ballinree), and Joseph (in Ballysheehan). Sadly, the deposition John Mills gives in Warren County does not give these specifics, only giving the parish, but it is clear, he is either the man who was living in Peake or the man in Ballinree. Furthermore, of the other six Millses listed above:
one was living in Castleblake (Honorable William Mills)
one was living in an unnamed town in St. Johnbaptist Parish (another John Mills)
one is living in Killough (yet another John Mills)
two were living in Grangebeg (two other John Millses)
one was living in Grangemore (one final John Mills)
For this, I created the following map, to show were all these Millses were living at the time, showing how they are spread out across County Tipperary which I put together on Google Earth: [2]
Tumblr media
In 1831, one John Mills was on a list of "those liable for tithes who had not paid" and he was living in Grangemore as a farmer. Listings in other surviving records do not list anyone else with the surname of Mills. The same goes for House, Quarto, Tenure, Field & Miscellaneous Books for varied Irish parishes, assembled by Richard Griffith, concentrated in the later 1840s to early 1850s. This could imply that many of the Mills family members had either died or immigrated to the United States by that time. Griffith's Valuation from 1848 to 1864 lists a "Patrick Mills" in Erry Parish in the early 1850s, three Millses (Mary, Anne and William) in St. Johnbaptist Parish around the same time,  and a John Mills in Killough as well.
Is it is of any surprise that by 1876 there 16 individuals with the surname of Mills listed as land owners in Ireland? The answer is a strong no.
Tumblr media
This post gives more context on the Mills family in Ireland and a place to start for further research!

Notes
[1] Some records show a "John Mills" buried in the nearby county of Wicklow but that is not what I'm referring to.
[2] Except for the one in St Johnbaptist Parish, because the only St. Johnbaptist that comes up are churches in Cashel and I'm not sure if he was living in Cashel.

Hey Mr. Marwood, so I know you have an interest in all things swords and a bit of HEMA, so I thought you might like to see this game about sword dueling which is kind of realistic
https://youtu.be/APFeKwqcj-Y
This clip turned up a couple of days ago as part of a "you liked that, so you might like this" selection, and since then there have been a lot more clips, reactions etc.
The game reminds me - and others mention it - of “Bushido Blade” for the old Playstation that might still be in the attic, though “Hellish Quart” runs on Windows 7, and since I’ve just recently moved from W-8 to W-10 I don’t know if it would work on my machine even if I played games much these days (which I don’t.)
*****
NB, it’s not MARwood but MORwood (like on the username) despite a flub in the 1911 census which made tracking down that document more awkward than expected:
Tumblr media
My Grandad didn’t fill this in himself, and the enumerator who did must have mis-heard and consequently mis-spelled the name. His handwriting differs from the 1901 census, which Grandad DID fill in and sign:
Tumblr media
Grandad’s only contribution to the 1911 one was just a witnessed Mark.
Tumblr media
Even his job had changed. In 1901 he was a saddler and harness-maker (skilled work):
Tumblr media
... while in 1911 he was a farm labourer (unskilled work):
Tumblr media
My Mum told me he was a saddler (again) when she was a young woman between the wars, so this small dry piece of history may record a hand-injury of some sort that prevented him from practicing his trade until it healed.
At this end of time, I can only guess.
As for the Morwood / Marwood thing, it’s a family joke that predated the census error and hung around (cough) right through to my youth, all because of this character:
Tumblr media
As the saying went, “If Pa killed Ma, who’d kill Pa? Marwood...”
I had an Uncle William - you can see him in the census - whose life at school must have been a lot of fun. I can imagine what it was like, because whenever I complained about having to wear a tie with my school uniform or anything else, I bet I was hearing the same comments...
:-P

I realize now I have the power of my poll function to satisfy silly curiosities about the people reading my posts! I was thinking about housing and what it’s like in my neighborhood vs. in other places across the world, looking up lists that enumerate housing types, and I found this list from the Canadian census’s website.

so last year i worked as an enumerator for the national census which means i got into a LOT of houses. one visit that has really stayed with me was during one of the worst days of the job. so i reach a floor at a building and the aroma of the most delicious home-cooked meal immediately starts tickling my nose. i ring a bell and this lady with the warmest smile answers the door in english and invites me in. the beautiful smell was actually coming from her house, she was having lunch with her daughter! i think she was around 35, from bosnia, and we ended up chatting like friends. she told me about her bachelor’s degree and about how she had ended up working as a customer service agent -and she spilled some tea about her coworkers too lol. she then offered me some food but even though i would DIE to taste it i was too embarassed but her daughter offered me candy. she was around 6 yo and was learning greek, and whenever i spoke to her in greek her little face just lit up in the cutest way. the warmth of this family still makes me smile to this day, but i realize that even though she confided to me that she felt lonely and she invited me to go over any time i wanted i didn’t bc i feared that would be creepy. but now i realize that was such a stupid mistake and i should have just maybe dropped by to get them some candy to “pay back” for the candy the girl gave me and maybe have a little chit chat. we do live in the same neighborhood but i dont remember her name, her face or even the building so that i could maybe leave her a letter???

:( no babies called Grandma in the census records (ref to this post)
Lots of I presume one person editing the records tho - like this, which is incredibly annoying, note to everyone please please don’t
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The middle one is less annoying, but only slightly
All of them otherwise are like this
Tumblr media
Listed with their name, and “Grandmother” - Grandmother Neves is in fact Charlotte Neves, there. I expect this to be another editing case, because Charlotte Neves is only ever listed as Charlotte Neves on that census - she has children with her (Elias and Henry, age 15, and Thomas, age 1), who I presume are her grandchildren, but still.
There are a couple who haven’t any first name listed -
Tumblr media
Here is Grandma Ginn -
Tumblr media
“living on her son” means that her son - Thomas, the coal and coke merchant (coke here meaning coal generally for forges - it burns hotter than your usual fireplace coal, if I remember right - not cola or cocaine, tho both I spose are not impossible in 1891) - pays her way and looks after her, rather than her having a job of her own or “living on own means” which I think is on savings
Having checked on Thomas as a child, Grandma Ginn’s first name is Sarah, and her husband Joseph was a brick maker.
And here is Grandma Harris -
Tumblr media
She is living with her daughter, Anne Harris, and Anne’s children (Lizzie, Maggie, Rose, Cassie and Gwen). They both have “number of years married, children still living, children who have died” crossed out because they are both widows, and so the marriage isn’t current. Anne is 43, was married 20 years ago (1891), and had 7 children, 2 of whom died, and Grandma is 78, was married 60 years ago (1851) and had 14 children, 9 of whom died - I would imagine, given 60 years had passed, not all of those 9 died small, but it’s certainly not out of the question.
Having checked on Anne as a child, Grandma Harris here is actually Margaret Jones (Jones being Anne’s maiden name), and she was a recent widow in 1871 - she is listed “wife”, not head of house, and “W” for widow - 35, and three children with her then (possibly more away, old enough to go into service or the like) - John Jones, age 13, a coal miner, our Anne as above, age 4, and David, age 2.
I don’t know it’s right, cs I imagine there’s an awful lot of John Jones’s from Glamorgan, tho a few less born to Margaret’s - and besides that Margaret is yet “head, widow”, and still with the same name and all - it’s possible she never got married at all, and didn’t wish to say so to the enumerator, or, being in Glamorgan, that she married multiple men named Jones, but I think myself I’d pick the former cause.
But in 1861, anyway, there’s this -
Tumblr media
Margaret Jones (this one, at least, if they are not the same) was a copper smelter!
And, finally,
Tumblr media
It’s a Scottish record, so I can’t see more than this - but I can look up 4 Richmond Court, I think, let’s see what that gives
Richard Harrison and Robina nee Mark/Meck/Meek. Richard was a letter press machinist from Canongate.
They had 5 children at the time - Robina (13, a message girl), Annie (11), Richard (8), Agnes (6) and Jane (10 months).
Ten years previous - I’m not sure if “Grandma” in 1881 is Robina’s mother or Richard’s, but in 1871, they’re living with Robina’s mother - Agnes Meek. The ages don’t match, but then they’re often approximate, especially if one person is answering for the whole household. There’s no more details there, but in 1851, Agnes Meck, this time, is wife to John Meck, a sawyer (a timber mill worker, y’know like “saw”, a saw-er, sawyer).

POPULATION DENSITY
Mumbai has a population of over 12.7 million, with a population density of 21,000 per square kilometer. It is known for the top financial, entertainment, and economic industries of India.
[Source 1 ]
The population of Mumbai has more than doubled since 1991, when the census showed that there were 9.9 million people living in the area. The rapid expansion has led to serious health issues that have to be addressed by the government, and a large percentage of residents live in the city’s slums.
Population happened last year
The population density of Mumbai is approximately 73,000 per square mile, which makes Mumbai one of the most densely populated cities in the world.

MUMBAI COST OF LIVING
Mumbai's cost of living is influenced by a number of factors, including location, kind of housing, monthly rent, commute time, and financial situation. The average monthly cost of living in Mumbai can range from Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000.
One of the most costly cities in India to live in is Mumbai. You must limit your spending in accordance with your needs.

GENERAL LIVING CONDITIONS OF MUMBAI
More than half of the city's residents reside in slums, which are areas of extreme poverty with limited access to public transportation, potable water, and power. Mumbai has the highest slum population of any city in the world, with an estimated 6.5 million people living there.
This inequality does not only exist in India. The disparities between the rich and the poor have increased to intolerable extremes as cities around the world become denser and more urbanised.
Early summer to late fall is when India experiences its monsoon season. Around 200 people have died this year alone as a result of flooding and landslides caused by extreme weather that has left the country vulnerable. Due to the severe rains, transit services were suspended and hundreds of commuters were left stranded in Mumbai. More people died in floods because the conditions were bad

FUTURE PROSPECTS
In 2022, the MMRDA hopes to commission two elevated Metro lines in the western suburbs — one 16.5-km line from Dahisar East to Andheri East along the Western Express Highway, and the other from Dahisar to D.N. Nagar in Andheri West, spanning 18.5 km.
The MMRDA had hoped to commission the lines by May 2021, but the pandemic's obstacles and ongoing right-of-way concerns prevented that from happening.
