Not just when I'm writing a paper, but when I'm READING a textbook it looks SO messy (Rick-Astley, 1969, p. 420) and it's SO distracting, (Morbius, 2022) and SO disruptive (Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, & Rudolph, 1964.) to my reading and (Bird, Grouch, Monster, & Monster, 1997 ) learning process. And why are some of them SO FUCKING (According, 2007; To & All, 1991; Known, Laws, & Of, 2378; Aviation, 57 B.C.E.) LONG???
Btw how does it feel being on the Goncharov Wikipedia page
Probably less concerning than the number of other people's posts inexplicably misattributed to me that are circulating in screenshot form on Facebook, to be honest.
It is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase et alia, 'and others'. I am the Scherz in Scherz et al. (obviously), and the 'et al.' in the case of the Mini species refers to my coauthors: Carl R. Hutter, Andolalao Rakotoarison, Jana C. Riemann, Mark-Oliver Rödel, Serge H. Ndriantsoa, Julian Glos, Sam Hyde Roberts, Angelica Crottini, Miguel Vences, and Frank Glaw. All wonderful people to work with, without whom we could not have published those frog species, and honestly much to important to reduce to 'and others'. But alas, having the full author list is somewhat cumbersome. So here we are.
As promised, here's my grad student's guide to formatting citations! This is essentially the presentation I gave to my undergraduate students to help them know when and how to cite things properly in their papers. The links included are:
Also, the Zotero web extensions work with @jstor so that you can import all of the information necessary for a citation directly from your browser! No need to enter things manually!
“Being back in the room where depression lives, it’s a sharp pain and an overwhelming numbness. I love her. Even in the room, I love her. But being loved takes work too. I don’t have it in me to be loved right now.”
