Through Rocks and Snow Ch. 17 - The Summit
FFN: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/14146784/17/Through-Rocks-and-Snow
AO3: Through Rocks and Snow - Chapter 17
17. The Summit
Prompt: Rigid
Before that day, Madeline’s relationship with herself, and by extension, with Badeline, has been nothing short of a wretched one.
Now they’ve had made amends, their relationship had become rigidly tense. Tense as in “Meeting a new distant relative” Tense. Still, climbing the mountain had never been more exciting and Madeline has never thought of herself as more capable than ever.
Trees, undergrowth and sky grew in abundances as they reached the surface. Madeline and Badeline were climbing their way out of the caves just as fast as they have fallen.
In a moment of catharsis, both person and reflection spun into one being. With the determination of Madeline and the power of Badeline, time froze for a second as Badeline launched Madeline through the skies. Everything around around became a blur of snow, sky and sunset where Madeline floated despite the unparallel speed she climbed with.
The moment she reached the forsaken city, Madeline noted something different on the place.
The buildings lit bright and sunlight shone through the window frames and what little broken glass remained attached alike.
The once suffocating sensation of space became as old as the buildings Madeline now traveled through running with the chill wind hitting her face and her pink fluttering free as her.
Did the city change or had Madeline changed instead?
Not so long ago, change may have been the scariest thing for Madeline whereas now excitement and adrenaline rushed through her blood for her and Badeline to spring once more into the sky with the power of the mountain.
Even with her newfound vigor, Madeline couldn’t help but feel uneasy at the place she met the other part of herself, even if her relationship with literally herself was in a whole ‘nother world in comparison, the red-haired girl couldn’t shake the feeling of their lukewarm first encounter they had.
She noticed Badeline also carried mixed feelings in one of their breaks when Madeline had to rest and figure where to go. The person turned to her reflection reluctant. She could feel Badeline stare on the back of her head burning; Just like she felt on the city behind them.
“You’re thinking about too, right?”
Badeline pressed her lips together in a curved line and shied her eyes away from Madeline into the giant view of an once great city. “I just don’t know how to feel. I always thought we would be nothing more than enemies or allies at best, always trying to control everything about the other. Is so…complicated to put all that in words.”
“You don’t need to.”
Madeline’s word pulled Badeline out of her head, startling her as if she had just woken up from a bad dream.
Madeline smiled with smiled with shame and a tad of laughter seeing the same confusion and empty headedness that plagued herself since forever. “You don’t need to explain. I feel the same.”
Badeline opened her mouth but no words came out. Her breath stopped midway before shame invaded her and her lips pressed together in a twisted S form. “I’m sorry,” She whimpered with half closed eyes filled with tears on the edge.
“I know and it’s okay.” Madeline opened her arms wide.
“Are you seriously asking for a hug right now?” She asked between small coughs trying to contain her cry.
“I’m trying to do something nice for us.” Madeline’s tone grew irritated. Slowly but surely, Badeline accepted the hug. They stayed in that position until Badeline’s breathing soothed.
After a while they arrived to the backdoor of the celestial resort, expecting to find Oshiro as soon as they put a foot in. The storage room they entered was surprisingly clean of dust and webs.
“I remember this place in a lot worse shape,” Badeline said to the air as she idly grabbed a bag of food for birds with disinterest.
“Badeline.”
“What? Is true. That old weirdo forced you to do his job. It would not be the first time.”
“He needed help.”
“You needed help. Help I tried to give you, by the way, and you ignored me for the umpteenth time.”
“This time was dif–“
“This time was no different than all those times you ignored what was best for you.” Badeline teleported behind Madeline and grabbed her by her shoulders to turn her to the nearest exit. “Please.”
The new, cleaner and far more spacious Celestial Resort allowed person and reflection to get out of the large storage room in a matter of minutes, and before they knew it, the vast and colorful scenery of the golden and purple ridge filled their eyes. As soon as Madeline exposed to open air, wind fluttered against her hair and the cold breeze froze her red cheeks.
“This place was always this quiet?” Badeline asked upon materializing above Madeline.
“Er, sort of. I suppose that’s why I went here after…”
“Yeah,” She said irritated.
“Yeah,” She said ashamed.
“What is it with you running away like that whenever trouble appear”
“Were you not the cause of those impulsive ticks?”
Badeline stopped her “walk” mid-air. “Hey, don’t throw me under the bus like that.” She growled with her nose and some cold air could be seen coming out. “If anything, I was the one who learned that from YOU after you…kicked me out.”
“Sorry about that again.”
“Don’t care, didn’t ask.”
Madeline couldn’t help but notice the wind in the ridge blew stronger than last time. She soon became aware if it wasn’t for Badeline, she wouldn’t have made it to the Mirror Temple.
The once dark lit temple now was illuminated in almost every surface and corner. Madeline stopped to contemplate the temple, now in all of its magnific. “This is all my doing?” She asked to the large space in the room.
“This WAS your doing,” Badeline rectified. “I told you, the temple reflects your mind, but you didn’t listen to me, as usual.”
“Okay, okay, no need to gloat about it, what do we do now?”
“Miss problems asking for help? I thought I’d never live to see this day.”
“Don’t jinx about it,” Madeline poorly mimicked Badeline’s voice being done with it all.
“Okay, okay. Just listen to me and keep your mind calm.”
And so she did after Badeline returned to Madeline and her hair turned pink again. All she had to do was listen to her instincts and everything would be okay as her reward.
The full weight of her journey fell upon her head when she realized she had climbed what took her two—almost three days—in a couple of hours.
Strong and aggressive breezes of wind hit her body. They threatened to freeze her bones and hindered her every move rigid and tense. Madeline knew she could fly away if she was not careful.
Amidst the excitement and joy inflating her chest, Madeline couldn’t shake the feeling of shame. How much else could have she gained and achieved from the beginning, only if she had not been so messed up.
Madeline would always wonder about the “what ifs” and “coulds”, “woulds”, and of course, the “only ifs” alike. How could she not? What laid inside her had been the reason she almost gave up and now it was that very same thing the reason she was achieving her goal.
Right there, in the verge of reaching the summit, how could she forget?
She could not. She would not.
Not as an intrusive thought as before, but as a willful reminder.
And what a willful, cherishable reminder she’d have as her steps in the chill snow reached the red flag at the very top of the summit. Madeline could catch the sunset hiding in the horizon painting her skin in a dim orange tone and witness the view of her whole journey since she started at the very same drive that almost stopped her.

Hero's Misery
Genre: Angst Summary: Hero's POV on some of the events in Omori, leading to the bad ending. TW: Suicide.
His whole life Hero was told he was perfect.
So much so that Hero started believing it himself.
But then, people didn't just say Hero was perfect. His mom squealed at his perfect friend group. His dad congratulated him for getting the perfect girlfriend. His classmates were jealous of his perfect parents, perfect family.
Then soon Hero realized that everything in his life was perfect. Perfect grades, perfect personality, perfect little brother, perfect parents, perfect friend group, perfect girlfriend.
He wasn't just the perfect person, he had the perfect life too.
He– as many people described it– was living the dream life many people wished to have.
He didn't want anymore since that would be greedy and perfect is not greedy-
And he was happy. He was happy with his perfect little life.
He loved his life.
___________________
Hero has only been to a funeral once.
He was 8 at the time and it was for some relatives that he had never met, but he quickly decided that he didn't like them.
It was suffocating, the pained sobs that surround him, the somber atmosphere.
He tried to imagine what it was like to lose a loved one, not to much success.
But now, he really can say how much he hates funerals.
Mari is just a few feet in front of him. Mari, his beautiful perfect beloved girlfriend, laying cold in a coffin.
She didn't deserve to die. She should've realized how so many people loved her and cared for her and would be miserable if she died.
He can't believe he didn't notice. He was her boyfriend goddammit! He couldn't even see Mari was struggling. He should've seen through it and helped her.
Hero's nickname hasn't felt more unfitting until today.
He shut his eyes, not wanting to see Mari's cold dead body surrounded by flowers. He could hear the cries of many people, and he knew that his friends were crying their hearts out too.
Kel, Sunny, Basil, Aubrey, Mari's parents, and himself. There were so many people that cared about Mari. So why?! Why did she do it?
For the first time in a long time, Hero wept. He sobbed until he felt hollow inside.
The day that death took Mari, it didn't just take her, it took a part of Hero too.
___________________
Hero has been rotting in his bed since that day. His whole life felt pointless since he couldn’t even see how much Mari was suffering. How could he live if he couldn’t even help one person?
His head ached and he felt like vomiting, but he didn’t move an inch, just continuing to think of all that he could’ve done to help.
At some point, Kel came up to him, saying something along the lines of going to the park, smiling.
Hero felt something snap in him. How dare he smile after what Mari did to herself. Mari ended her suffering and he was happy?!
Hero remembers screaming insults at Kel until both of them were in tears.
Eventually, his parents came into their room, ignoring Kel to go comfort him.
Hero snapped out of his daze when he saw Kel wiping up his own tears, pushing past his parents to go apologize and comfort him.
Hero promised Kel to never do that again.
___________________
Hero was going to a pretty good college, that was only a couple hours away from home. He was studying to be a doctor, and despite his passion for cooking, he decided that this was the best route for him.
He wouldn’t say that he was attractive, but sometimes he could feel the stares that some girls gave him, while excitedly whispering to their friends.
Some girls even confessed to him! He never accepted them though, and his college friends tell him to “loosen up” or something.
It’s just… how can he have another girlfriend after Mari? Hell, he thought Mari was the woman he’d marry! It would feel unfaithful if he just got another girlfriend.
The sorrow that he felt after he thought that was immeasurable, the thoughts of what he should’ve and could’ve done to help threatened to flood his mind, leaving him to uselessly mope in his bed like he did those years ago.
Hero shook off those thoughts.
Right now, he should focus on his schoolwork.
___________________
When going back home from college, Hero expected to relax and destress from college, but he definitely didn’t expect to save Sunny from drowning.
It was an unexpected “surprise”, but Hero was quite happy to see that Sunny was outside. Especially since he was so pale… and skinny… and generally not healthy. But Kel told him that Sunny was moving, which is a good thing, since… the memories this place holds….
Aubrey dyed her hair pink, which did look good on her, Mari was supposed to dye her hair purple and she’s… in a gang? Apparently, she’s also the one who shoved him in the lake and has been bullying him. He’s worried about her, maybe he shouldn’t have left after all.
Well, everything is going well. He may have gotten his mom mad, but of course, he made it up to her!
They even decided to have a sleepover at Sunny’s house! Just like old times!
For the first time in a long time, he felt that things were looking up.
___________________
The next day was quite eventful, they successfully managed to talk to Aubrey (well, he did), and Hero regretted not being out for them all. He’s the oldest, so he should’ve made sure everyone was okay.
But, they got all the photos back in the photo album! And they went to Basil’s house to go apologise for not being there for him (and bullying him on Aubrey’s part). But unfortunately, Basil’s grandma died, and it probably wasn’t the best time to apologize. Basil’s caretaker did let them stay the night, so he was confident that they could fix everything.
But that night is where everything went wrong.
Hero awoke to Sunny not being next to him, which seemed normal, as he could’ve been in the bathroom, but Hero kept on hearing… noises, so he got out of his quilt and decided to check it out.
He knocked on the bathroom door. Nothing. The noises were coming from Basil’s bedroom, and even though Hero didn’t want to disturb Basil’s privacy, he opened the door.
“Basil is Sunn-” Hero didn’t get to finish as he saw the state Sunny was in, his eye was bleeding, and Basil was holding the weapon.
What happened next was a blur, just him screaming for help and calling an ambulance.
...And that’s what made them end up here, in a hospital, in Basil’s room.
They would press for answers, but since Basil was in an unstable condition, they decided the questions could come later.
They stayed there for a bit, making sure Basil was at least not going to have a nervous breakdown.
“We should probably see if Sunny’s awake,” He said.
Aubrey and Kel nodded.
“Ah…okay.” Basil looked sad, “I have to apologize to him…” He muttered that last part.
As they were walking out of the room Kel said, “We’ll see you in a bit, Basil!”
But when they went to Sunny’s room, surprisingly, he wasn’t in his bed.
“Maybe he’s in the washroom?” Kel said.
“Well, he definitely shouldn’t be out of bed.” He responded.
“Well, then let's split up,” Aubrey said, “Kel you check the bathrooms, Hero you can check… the hallways? And I guess I’ll check where Hero doesn’t.”
“Sounds like a plan to me!” Kel said, and they were off.
Before Hero checked the hallways, he just wanted to make sure of one thing… Hero ran to the rooftop, hoping and praying Sunny wasn’t there. He…probably wasn’t right? He wouldn’t do that to them…
But as he got to the rooftop, he saw Sunny. The pale, skinny unhealthy boy that locked himself in his house because of what his sister did. And he was about to follow in her footsteps.
Some time ago, Mari made him promise her if anything happened to her he’d protect Sunny. He was not going to break that promise.
“SUNNY! Sunny, please get away from that edge, please.” He begged.
Sunny didn’t look at him, just staring at the ground below him.
He tried again, “Sunny, please. I know you miss her– I do too –but we can’t have someone else die. Not again.” He took a deep breath, taking a few steps forward “I- I don’t think we’ll survive this time Sunny. We- We care for you! All of us do, Kel, Aubrey, Basil, and me! Please, Mari wouldn’t want you to do this!”
Sunny looked back at him, his eyes dark and lifeless.
“Sunny-”
But then he smiled. It was the brightest smile he’d seen Sunny give after Mari died, it was like…
He was at peace with himself.
Hero’s eyes widened at that, starting to run to Sunny.
Sunny jumped off.
“SUNNY!”
Hero failed again.
End!
Not my best work... but I still liked writing this. Maybe I'll write perspectives on the other characters... - Sage

This is just a little drabble about a cute concept I've had rattlin' around in my head. I hope you all enjoy! ^w^)

Part of what's so weird & frustrating about strawberry jam (celeste mod) is that it's so clearly trying to court normal celeste players and welcome them into the modding scene, with so much polished art and gameplay, but the design sensibilities is so fucking mod-headed in a way i can't imagine being appealing to someone used to the base game. It's like a fanfiction with impeccable prose that still regularly describes kissing as "tongues battling for dominance."
like, what the fuck is this?
youtube
does anyone remember celeste fondly as a game where great lengths are made to have it look like a lot is going on but also essentially have you watch the level play itself? same with levels where the pieces satisfyingly move around to wherever you need them in some visually pleasing dance around the player, celeste modding is in its "coffeeshop AU" phase where they've developed their own tropes and cliches apart from the source material. I'd sooner recommend Spring Collab to a celeste modding newcomer, honestly.

Do you have any creative influences? I'm always so impressed by your work— your prose especially— and I need to know if there's any creators out there I need to file away in the creative influence database in my head so I can write like you
This question took all day of me searching and thinking because I can't really say I know who or what's influenced me right off the top of my head. With notable exceptions that bookend this post. Anyway, here you go!
@.teshamerkel 's PMD Seekers of Soul was my TPiaG before I found TPiaG. It helped me through a part of my life that, looking back, was a lot harder than I thought it was. While it didn't move me to the point of starting to make my own art again, I certainly did consider it. And I consider Seekers of Soul to be a must-read for any PMD fanfic enthusiasts.
Tui T. Southerland's Wings of Fire series is the first thing I can remember thinking of fanfiction for. I never did write any of it, mostly because I never felt motivated enough (and partially because it was was all just oc x canon). But even with my misgivings of the series and how bungled the overall theme of arc 2 was with how they defeated the big bad, book 6 is still one of my favorite books of all time.
All of @.saltnpepperbunny 's work is really good, and definitely had an influence!
PMD Victory Fire holds a very special place in my heart for being excellent story, incredible artwork (that I think was done in MS paint), and being one of the first pmd things I consumed besides the games. Even if its on indefinite hiatus, I still consider it to be a must-read for even people outside of the PMD sphere. I would go into more detail, but I don't want to spoil anything!
I also consider Cucumber Quest to be a must-read. I dont have much to say besides that it's genuinely amazing and that you should read it the first chance you get.
Obligatory Avatar The Last Airbender mention. It's shocking to me how the worst that show got was just a mediocre episode in the first season. (The great divide) I genuinely think the entire series should be put in museums or something because it is an enormous accomplishment in the field of storytelling in general.
Scoob And Shag goes from a silly, foul-mouthed joke comic, to... not a joke comic. I would love to gush about it, but I fear that doing so would spoil it. Check it out. Even if its just for the (frankly absurd) glow up in the artistic style and quality. I normally advise going into things as blind as possible, but I would recommend checking the TV tropes page to know what kinda stuff you're in for once you reach around episode 20~30 and then seeing if it's something you would be interested in. It's very good, but definitely not for everyone.
... I thiiiiink that's it for people and content I can point to and know that they've influenced me off the top of my head. (Aside from one massive exception at the end of this post) The rest of this is just kinda a list of content and creators I really enjoy and highly recommend checking out at some point. Even If I can't really tell just how much of an effect it's had on me.
First, videogames!
Despite how much of my time I spend playing videogames, the only few I can point to are:
Celeste
Undertale
Undertale Yellow
Deltarune
Stardew Valley
and Hades. (I recommend Hades the most)
Despite how much I love the series, I haven't actually played any PMD games. (At least, in any official sense.) I am working towards getting them though!
Next, Youtubers:
• Atastic's animations are fantastic! I don't have much to say beyond that they are really good and fun.
• Bumbles McFumbles is a rare example of a person who is equally entertaining while talking about something he likes, as he is while talking about something he doesn't like. He's got an excellent sense of comedic flow and timing. He's part of the reason why my humor is the way it is.
• Doodley is an animator that makes videos on animation principles and is also just generally entertaining while also educational.
• Eltorro64rus makes all of his absurdist, extremely smooth animations in Gmod. Which is endlessly impressive if you know that Gmod is a game first, and an animation software like, 6th. The humor is very much an acquired taste though.
• FutureCanoe has such a funny, dry sense of comedy that it almost makes you forget that he's a cooking youtuber who somehow makes all of his food look like it was poisoned before, during and after cooking.
• GildedGuy is such a cool animator that he got his stickman OC in fortnite! And all his animations are gorgeous masterpieces, that too.
• Krugston is an animator that is constantly experimenting with his style. He went from a generic storytime animator to, in my opinion, one of the most unique and creative animators on the platform.
• Neytirix is an animated youtuber, but describing her videos really difficult because of just how unique they are. My best shot at it would probably be: "horror storytime animator and artist, with overarching plot between videos"
• Overly Sarcastic Productions has an entire, multi-hour long playlist of videos on different tropes. And within those is writing advice. While there are a couple of things that I remember disagreeing with, (even though I can't remember specifically what. probably just opinions on certain shows' quality) The general advise they give can be a big help. (They also do history lessons, and while I don't care for those as much, there is definitely appeal behind them)
• MajorLink doesn't have a large amount of videos, but he does have a fan animated series of The Legend Of Zelda. One with a total runtime reaching just over two hours at this point, with more on the way!
• ScottTheWoz is up there with Jerma as one of the most experimental, consistently funny, and creative e-celebs on their respective platforms. One of the few YouTubers that you would have to watch his videos in chronological order to understand all of the jokes. But even lacking context behind all of the injokes and references is fine because he writes jokes with the knowledge that someone might be watching it for the first time. 'Great Gaming Mysteries', followed by 'The Trial' would be my favorite youtube video of all time if they weren't separate.
• Wendigoon's videos are equal parts entertaining, and disturbing. They also are consistently over the 1 hour mark, so they also make for pretty good background noise material if you want to hear a guy talk for hours.
• Yahya Danboos has several videos showcasing his process of making an ambitious 3d hack-n-slash as a solo dev. It's pretty informative on the process of making a 3d game.
Next is TV shows!
This one is even shorter than videogames since the amount of time I spend searching for shows to watch, and watching youtube videos on said shows, outweighs the amount of time I spend actually watching the shows.
But I can fully recomend these shows though!
Centaurworld
Amphibia
Gravity Falls
Adventure Time
The Owl House
Next up, Webcomics!
All of the following are in no specific order. If I don't say anything, it's not because it's worse, but because saying "it's really dang good and you should check it out" for every entry can get exhausting.
All of these can be found on ComicFury.
PMD: Taken Place
Pokémon Abridgestery Dungeon
PMD: Milos From Home
PMD: On Borrowed Time
PMD: Terminus
PMD: Another Perspective
PMD: The Human Connection
PMD: Rangers Of Sky
PMD: The Rouge Team
Autumn In Sinnoh
Jet's Black Nuzlocke
Last Light
Soul Food
Endurance: In Our Blood
Laika's Comet
The-Heart-Of-A-Monster
Vagabond Sonic
All of the following I found on Webtoons, some I know arent on just webtoons, but I do know that they're all on there.
Lil' Char and Gang
Suitor Armor
Vampire Husband
City Of Blank
The Greatest Estate Developer (genuinely the funniest webtoon ive ever read)
The Last Dimension
Hand Jumper
Spontaneous World Shifting (my favorite out of all of these in the webtoons section)
Magic School Girl: Spare No Villains
Loving Reaper (my beloved)
TRIPTRACK
Spellward Bound
Marionetta
Zodiac Parade
Of Swamp and Sea
Jupiter Men
Vibe Check!
CARL
Next is the various Tumblrinas I follow. (Not tagging them because i feel like it'd be wierd.)
@.cringywhitedragon and @.ghetsis both come up with really cool idea's that are partially responsible for the things I come up with.
@.efplanning Makes some cool art and is also cooking up a really cool universe that I'm excited to see.
@.obogaboo is making PMD: Taken Place and is also just a really good artist.
@.teeterarting Author of The Rouge Team and also makes really lovely art
@.aimer-arts 's art is adorable and wonderful and beautiful and I love it.
Same goes for @.quikyu
Same goes for @.sunsnak
Same goes for @.pichiicake
Same goes for @.pikabata
Same goes for @.chufflepop
Same goes for @.honeycrud
Same goes for @.honrupi-art
Same goes for @.cryptid-creations
Same goes for @.dailyralsei
Same goes for @.bugblast
@.zeropro Is the author of Jet's Black Nuzlocke, and also makes some great art on the side!
@.fwugradiation makes some cool music I think. He hasn't posted it a while though.
@.spicymochi makes cute art that I wanna buy stickers of in the future.
@.advosart 's riolu gives me life.
And now for the grand finale! The person who's my greatest creative influence:
It's @sincerely-sofie
You asked me for my biggest creative influences, but it seems to me, from what I think is implied in that ask you sent, didn't realize that I wouldn't even be here if it weren't for you. I doubt I ever would have gotten started even writing things if it weren't for the things that you make and your constant, uplifting encouragement.
While all of these other things I've outlined in this post did have an impact, and those ones at the start had more of an impact as i might not have thought of before, they all are barely quantifiable compared to just how much of an impact your own stuff has had on my creative expression. It's your stuff that got me to begin creatively expressing after all!
You say you like my Prose, but I actually think that it sounds closest to yours than anyone elses, if we assume that my own personality isnt a factor.
It's genuinely impossible to thank you enough for how much of a positive impact you've had on me.
:)

I love! Have I bothered you about the ask game yet? If I have, I’m gonna do it again lol🫶🏽
🎨🐝🧩
Yay! More asks! Thank you, Celeste! 💛
🎨 ⇢ link your favourite piece of fanart and explain why you like it
I don’t often reblog fanart, but this fanart of Ominis and Sebastian was so pretty. I love the colors and the poses and Seb’s smile
🐝 ⇢ tag your biggest supporter(s) and say one nice thing about them
Definitely @thatdammchickennugget , @finalgirllx , and @pizzaapeteer
Mari is always so nice and sweet to me and writes some of the best fanfic I’ve ever read 💛
Lyss has been very welcoming and friendly, and talking or interacting with her always makes me happy 💛
Georgia is the absolute best and every time I see her in my notifs it makes me smile 💛
Only gonna tag my top three, but really all of my mutuals and followers are my biggest supporters and I love all of you 🥰
🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?
I already answered this one, but I’ll do it again. No paragraph breaks. I’ve known how to read really fast since I was a kid, and a downside to that is that I don’t know how to read long chunks of sentences.
My brain mushes the sentences together and skims over them and I can’t read properly unless I go really slowly.

Meta-Magic Design, or, "'Restart The Game' Is A Complete Sentence"
@patricia-taxxon's new video essay on Celeste modding has a great bit about mods as fanfiction of a game's mechanics, and it's interesting to use that lens on thirty years of variably-canonical Magic: The Gathering design. (As with her video, this will necessarily have a lot of game jargon but the broad strokes should hopefully be clear.)
Level One: Standard-legal expansions, the most accessible and promoted sets, which generally follow an ongoing storyline and introduce/reuse named mechanics. (Standard is one of the game's most-played competitive formats, made up of the last ~two years of main sets.) They have their set of characters who may show up in new incarnations, turned evil, turned good, etc. but are mostly constrained by who's currently alive and relevant.
In addition to the named mechanics, there are plenty of established design tropes at both the card and set levels: Cancel With Upside. a 2/1 for B that can't block, or ETBs tapped, and has some way to recur itself. Common tapped dual lands with marginal upside. An instant for 1B that kills most creatures in the game but with enough relevant exceptions for interesting counterplay. A cycle of two-color uncommons that clearly signpost draft archetypes. At the set level, R&D has frameworks for the quantity and efficiency of removal, the range of creature sizes, the mix of payoffs and enablers and counterplay for the set's mechanics.
These frameworks can be nudged depending on the feel the set's going for: Innistrad's creatures were a bit squishier to better set up Morbid, multicolor-themed sets will (usually) have better mana-fixing, etc. Sometimes R&D just fucks up, like making a set way too aggressive or way too grindy, but usually these deviations have some cleverness behind them.
Level Two: Supplemental sets, like Modern Horizons and Commander products. They have greater leeway to make weirder, wordier cards, bringing back and remixing old mechanics, and featuring long-dead or obscure characters, all in service of targeting a more enfranchised audience. Standard-legal sets will have their fair share of cards that look alright but truly shine if you're aware of the game's high-level strategy and rules implications, but these sets can have cards that only make sense if you do, or push those rules to the limit. Standard-legal sets have flirted with this zone, like the polarizing meta-jokes of Time Spiral block - hell, Modern Horizons was internally pitched as Time Spiral 2. This is the zone of cards with no mana cost - not zero, but nonexistent - and design puns like combining the Splice mechanic with the established motif of Splicers-who-make-golems. These sets will also bring back both underused and notoriously-broken mechanics and themes, aiming to readjust the power level up or down as needed. These sets have admittedly produced some spectacularly broken cards, but it is pretty neat to see a banned card that literally says "You can't spend mana to cast this spell."
---THE THRESHOLD OF TOURNAMENT LEGALITY---
Level Three: Non-tournament-legal cards printed by Wizards of the Coast. Most of these are in the Un- sets, with a wacky tone poking fun at the game's self-serious lore, and designs ranging from "intuitive to say plainly, but do not work in the game's rules grammar" to "Slaying Mantis enters the battlefield by being thrown from a distance of at least three feet." There are also the more deadpan Playtest Cards, which are closer to the casual way card text is written out before editors hammer it into the game's rules language. They reference past design experiments and ideas from the Great Designer Search competitions alongside things that would make the rules manager stab you if you proposed them seriously. (Though, much as Un- sets have often been a testing ground for Level Two designs, one playtest card has already been reprinted under a new name in a standard-legal set.) These are free to be fully disregard the fourth wall and play in bizarre territory, and all levels of the game are richer for it.
Level Four: Fanmade cards that Wizards employees legally cannot look at or acknowledge, except for very specific circumstances like Great Designer Searches or the You Make The Card events. These are free to seriously imitate any of the above levels, reference media Wizards never could or would, be straight-up jokes rather than game pieces, or just riff on the Custommagic subreddit's abiding love of Colossal Dreadmaw. A few brave souls make whole custom sets meant to be drafted, which demands a rigorous level of design and playtesting but also frees them from the cards having to be playable (or non-broken) in broader formats. Maybe the perfect payoff card the set needs would break Modern in half; that's not their problem. Although this level is almost completely walled off from the conversation among the first three, plenty of Great Designer Search finalists (and winners!) came up in this realm and bring its sensibilities with them.
On one hand there are the game's textual rules, named mechanics, design tropes, and established tone; on the other, the set of brain-melting rules interactions, the mechanics that flopped, play patterns considered brutally unfun, and Noggin Whack. The game would calcify if R&D stayed safely within the first realm, and although they have been rightfully criticized for some of their ventures outside it, there's a lot to learn from the wilderness.

Through Rocks and Snow Ch. 15 - Reflection
FFN: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/14146784/15/Through-Rocks-and-Snow
AO3: Through Rocks and Snow - Chapter 15
15. Reflection
Prompt: Wretched
Ignorance is bliss, but knowledge is permanent.
Ironically, both can be used to wash doubt away. But once you know something you can’t unknow it. You may forget it; its meaning may change. But it will stay there. Always.
Celia knew this. She figured out the best she could do was to make herself comfortable with her demons.
Ignorance is blinding, so knowledge is permanent.
To forget it is to invite trouble. And troubled always arrived at one’s doorstep. Always.
When it does, it causes a commotion. A commotion such as the one Celia felt first in the air, then at her feet. The mountain spoke a language her demons taught her. A language of pain and fear.
Such language lured lost souls into Celeste Mountain whether they understood it or not. Especially if they didn’t.
Such as it did with that red-hair girl and even redder spite. It had been a long time since Celia had seen someone so hot-headed. She knew for a fact that may be as well the sole reason she had made it thus far.
Until then. Celia could feel it.
The mountain told her. That stubborn girl had tried forget.
And fell she did because of that. She fell long and hard. Deeper than she’s ever seen someone fail only to throw the towel and leave the mountain.
Trouble is like pain and fear and life: It finds a way, Celia remembered well as she made her way down into the deep caverns of the mountain. She knew where to search and it was not where Madeline fell.
Why search on the only place she knew she won’t be at? She knew that girl was too stubborn to settle with defeat; she recalled the look filled with determination when she first saw her at the feet of the mountain.
It was funny to Celia how Madeline carried her struggle now so deep in the mountain in contrast to back then. There was a fine line between determination and stubbornness. Stupidity and braveness. But it didn’t matter to know which one was which at the end at the eyes of fear and pain—in a blizzard all snowflakes came from the same breeze of wind.
Celia found Madeline fed up with her failure, or rather, Madeline found Celia at the deep and never-ending blue and colorful caves after the older woman descended in an elevator.
It was even funnier when she heard Madeline was unable to address her problems to herself and created this whole story about how “someone” threw her down there. Experience told her this was all Madeline’s doing.
The icing on the cake was Madeline not realizing she meant the mountain as a whole and not just where the two of them found each other at.
“This girl you’re talking about. It sounds like she’s holding you back. Talk to her. Figure out why she’s so scared.”
“You think she’s…scared? I guess I never thought of it that way.”
“Stop wasting both of our time and ask her. What have you got to lose?”
Celia may have lived many years in solitude in the mountain by now. Her way to update herself of the world outside was to learn from adventurer visitants through the years. It amused her to know things haven’t changed much.
Yes. She was aware her advice to go and “find yourself” was one of the most—if not the most—regurgitated piece of self-help advice out there.
She was also aware Celeste Mountain was unlike any other place; so were the rules that dictated this place; so were the ways in which one interacted, failed to follow…and bended its rules.
Celia’s wretched knowledge didn’t make it any less applicable.
Ignorance is unapplicable. That is how knowledge is permanent.
Still, ignorance was durable as long as one wanted. Celia had saw previous climbers who believed by reaching the summit, all of their problems would be magically solved.
They were so encaptivated in seeing the forest they forgot to see the trees.
A journey’s last step was as important as any other.
“A glimpse at the truth is good for people. Even if most can’t accept what they see. There’s no shame in running back to your car and driving away. Someday you’ll be ready and then you’ll come back.”
Madeline looked at the elevator next to Celia with a dreading temptation. Her breath became heavier for a moment before she shook her head. “No. I’m going to see this through. No more running.”
“I thought so. Good luck.”
Madeline breathed in as deep as she could and exhaled. Her eyes got lost in the distance deep into the caverns. Her expression turned cold as snow and hard as rock. She was seeing something. Celia was convinced of it. But she was not one to ask such things.
“How can you stand living here? Isn’t hard to deal with this all the time?”
“It’s true, you never really get used to it. But it keeps me sharp. I like that about it.”
Ignorance is dull. That is the way knowledge stays permanent.
“But the mountain is so…confrontational.” Madeline gulped down as memories of recent days flashed in her eyes. Celia could tell it did.
“Sure, it doesn’t beat around the bush. Celeste Mountain is a place of healing, dear. The first step of healing is confronting the problem. Is never easy.”
Madeline’s face filled with an expression of being done with it all. Except she wasn’t. “Tell me about it.” And with that, Madeline went to chase shadows.
So Celia didn’t told her about it. She didn’t tell her the second step of healing was to hurt.
To hurt her comfort zone? To hurt her limits? To hurt the fragile calmness?
To hurt all her non-sense problems she dealt with?
All of the above. In the eyes of pain, they were all the same.
Celia didn’t tell her the third step was to hurt until she shattered herself, so she could rebuild herself from the broken pieces, like a broken mirror. If Madeline made the mistake of arranging the broken pieces in the same place, then they would break in the same way in the future.
As Madeline walked away, the light coming from the hole above Celia flickered due to a blue bird passing by covered the light. Celia’s shadow silhouette flickered along for more than a single moment, and then the shadow detached itself from Celia’s body and positioned itself next to her, who reacted only enough to acknowledge its presence.
The shadow started to spread like a small mass taking form and growing taller until it shaped itself into a replica of Celia, with wrinkles, cane and a tan almost as white as snow. The two of them stared at the red-haired girl disappear in the distance.
“You truly believe she’ll make it?” The shadow asked.
“Is a matter of time before we find out. The girl’s got spirt I’ll give her that.”
“That’s why you insisted on helping her that much?”
“Yes. And no.”
Her shadow understood in a mild disinterest and disappeared back into the ground back to follow Celia’s steps. The old woman turned back to the elevator. Even though it was only a few steps away, the effort took her breath away. In her way up to a much higher area she stretched the muscles around her shoulders as the nuts and bolts turning filled the silence.
Her shadow once again left her body and manifested itself next to Celia. “It was fun while the girl lasted.”
“It was.”
For a moment the elevator trembled, Celia used her cane for support until she could stand just fine. Both of them smiled in amusement. “Kid must really have a grudge against herself to have such effect.”
“That reminds me of the time you threw me off that cliff.”
“Ah yes. I had to drag you from the ridge all the way back to the cabin.”
“You gonna apologize for what happened to him?”
“Don’t tell me about it.” The shadow mimicked Madeline’s voice and the two of them laughed their breath off until the elevator reached right at the main entrance to the caverns and walked to a small outpost there.
Inside the cabin Celia found the frame of a photo of herself when she was younger next to a man in a suit with a small mustache and the mountain behind them. The black and white colors denoted its age. Celia rubbed the wrinkles in her face softly with her fingers.
“You think she will have something similar like what happened to you?” The shadow asked seeing how Celia took the frame with her.
Celia endeavored until she reached a chair outside the outpost to rest, upon sitting she left a deep sigh and making herself comfortable in her chair and waited. “Don’t know. Don’t matter. Either way she’ll come around, then we can take it from there, and then she’ll do as well.”
“You think “he” will have something similar like what happened to him?” The shadow asked again with her attention now at the entrance. Small trails of snow went into the cave until they disappeared in its depths. “This it’s not for him.”
“No. If that boy is different than this old fool, then there will be nothing to keen about. I trust him, he seems like a good man.”
“He. Seems.” The shadow accentuated her words.
“That’s enough Necia,”
And the two of them laughed.
Ignorance is ignorant. That is why knowledge is permanent.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Granny's chapter is finally here! I waited a long time to write this out and I'm extremely happy with the results.
Just in case you're wondering, yes. Celia is Granny's name. Funny enough, it was not only half way in the chapter I realized if I was writing this from Celia's Pov, then why the hell I was calling her Granny?!
Anyways, I wanted to make this one chapter a bit special.
I'm sure you can tell the reminiscence of past chapters in this one. That was what I talked about in previous chapters about the topics I wanted to ilustrate in here. It's all about sides of the same coin, I'm not talking just about Granny and Madeline, but Theo and Oshiro, even Badeline too. You see, I'm still fixated in wanting to show you what the game couldn't and that lured me to the question why they came to Mountain Celeste in the first place.
Why Oshiro and Celia stay?
Why Madeline and Theo don't?
What is Badeline to the mountain?
What did Theo's grandpa did in Mountain Celeste?
Among other questions, the most important of them all:
What do they ALL have in common?
What do they all have in common to have come to the mountain in the first place?
Madeline and Granny are not meant to be depicted as two sides of the same coin. Madeline is meant to be depicted as her turning to the same side of the coin Granny is in.
Also, the idea of Granny having her own "Badeline" was one I had for a long time. But I failed to notice I should have given some hints about just that sooner. There is this tip in writing that says that your readers being able to predict a plot twist or a sudden revelation doesn't mean you're too predictable, it means you gave off enough hints to make the something believable, and that, after all, is the main job of a writer.
Anyways, I failed to do just that, so...can I justify narratively Madeline had been just starting to understand the magnitude of the powers of the mountain and she was too busy with her journey to notice such thing? Anyways this little rambling here is nothing but a reminder to myself to not make that same mistake again in the future with other releases.
I kept myself to my word and I wrote as much as I thought needed to be written all for the chapter's sake, but still, the question of whether I should have done a novelization instead of these prompts-based chapters floats around my mind as I write this. Again, this gives us the benefit to explore sides of the game we could have never seen otherwise, but I have to remind myself this whole series of chapters, besides of a distraction of my other work, was meant to be an exercise to capture atmosphere in small spaces.
To polish my skills or to explore the unknown. To be or not to be.
I think that's all the rambling I have for now. You know what's coming next and by just thinking about it I'm having mixed feelings. Don't worry, the right kind of mixed feelings.
That's all, see ya.

Welcome to the Rose Brigade~ here, you can ask anyone in this killer establishment questions, or submit something for them to look over! So long as they don't kill you, you'll be fine...~
(Hello one and all! This is @a-chaotic-and-tired-mess aka Samantha!) Welcome to the Rose Brigade RP side-blog I made for my 2023 Lackadaisy fanfiction Below the Surface! I will go over who I am going to use to roleplay, and my guidelines! I hope you enjoy it here~)
(FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, IN ORDER OF THE DRAWING)
???
James Monroe
Mandisa Sephtis
Lacrimosa Ambrose (in front)
Silas Tueuse
Raquelle Tueuse
Celeste Legerra-Smitt
GUIDELINES:
Keep it friendly please! This is all for fun and games. I will NOT tolerate harassment.
NO NSFW roleplay. I am strictly against it. However, if you were to make dirty jokes/innuendos, then that's alright. But if you send in some thirsty mature asks, then I'm sure as hell going to be confused lmfao
Swearing is okay! But slurs are NOT! If I so happen to see any slurs (regarding race, disabilities, gender or sexuality) then I will NOT respond. This type of behavior disgusts me.
I will usually respond with a drawing and dialogue with actions! But the drawing takes me time :'))
Do NOT pester me into finishing. I will not tolerate that at all.
That's all I have for now, but I hope you enjoy this! <3333
AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ENJOYING MY FIC, AND ALSO FOR 218 FOLLOWERS ON MY MAIN BLOG!!! <3
Enjoy your stay~!

Meet the Volunteer: Lianne
Hey! My name is Lianne, and I’m a new volunteer with Fanhackers. I started writing fanfiction as a kid before I even knew what it was, and my first foray into fandom was through watching anime and writing fanfiction with my middle school friends. Over the years, I’ve had much love for the Percy Jackson and the Fire Emblem fandoms, as well as other video game communities like those of Celeste and Hades. I love fandom for providing me a safe place to be creative, explore my identities, and meet some of the most amazing friends!
As an undergraduate, I studied American studies and English literature with a special interest in archives and queer studies. I’m most interested in learning about fandom as an imaginative queer space and about anticapitalist modes of fandom production (like zines!). I’m not an academic, but some of the ideas I grappled with in an academic context have helped shape my understanding of myself, the histories to which I’m connected, and how I want to participate in my local and global communities—fandom is one of those! I’m hoping Fanhackers will be a way for me to continue that line of exploration alongside like-minded others. You’ll likely see posts from me on topics in the general intersections of queer, fan, and game studies. My first few posts will highlight the most recent issue of Transformative Works and Cultures, “Trans Fandoms.” Looking forward to being in community with you all!

Fissure
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary: Moments after several meteors are seen falling to the Devildom, Mephisto receives an urgent message from Diavolo.
Category: Gen
Rating: General Audiences
Language: English
Characters: Mephistopheles, Diavolo, Lucifer
Additional Tags: Barbatos (mentioned), Mammon (mentioned), Satan (mentioned), Asmodeus (mentioned), demon brothers (mentioned), argument, arguing, no resolution, no reconciliation, “the girls are fiiiighting”, Diavolo is trying, aftermath of the Celestial War, aftermath of the fall, Mephisto likes to wind Lucifer up, and who can blame him, it does end on a lighter note though, no MC, no main character, no beta
Fissure
He ran as fast as his legs would let him and ascended the stone steps of the Demon Lord’s Castle two or three at a time before he finally reached the large doors up ahead, knowing as loud as he could while he panted to catch his breath again.
He took a quick step back, recomposing himself and straightening his clothes, as the doors swung open to reveal the prince of the Devildom.
“Lord Diavolo.” Mephisto greeted the other demon with a nod.
“Mephisto,” Diavolo smiled as he moved aside to let Mephisto step over the threshold before he closed the doors again, “I’m glad you’re here, thank you for responding to my message so fast.”
“You said it was urgent,” Mephisto reminded him, “is something wrong? Does this happen to have anything to do with the seven meteors that were spotted across the Devildom earlier? Is it an attack from the Celestial Realm? Where’s Barbatos?” He reeled each question off in quick succession.
“Barbatos is on a retrieval mission as we speak,” Diavolo tried to settle the other demon.
“A retrieval mission?”
“Barbatos will return shortly, but in the meantime I would like your assistance.” Diavolo explained as he beckoned at Mephisto to follow him.
Diavolo led the other demon across the entrance hall and into another room.
Mephisto stopped in his tracks and froze in the doorway as his eyes fell upon a familiar dark haired man who adorned the Celestial Realm’s armour of light sitting in one of the chairs at a long table. He narrowed his eyes as he scrutinised the man in front of him with an expression of displeasure, mentally noting the fact that the usually bright and vibrant clothes were not splattered with what looked like mud and blood, and was torn in places.
“Lucifer. So it was an attack from the Celestial Realm,” Mephisto concluded in a harsh voice while his stare hardened and his hands balled into firsts as he began to stride across the room toward Lucifer, “you have some nerve.”
Lucifer stood up from his chair with a glare of his own and Mephisto approached him, ready to square up to the demon.
“No, no!” Diavolo quickly caught up to Mephisto and placed a hand on his shoulder in an attempt to diffuse the situation. “It’s nothing like that! Calm down!”
Mephisto stopped at Diavolo’s touch but his eyes continued to survey the man in front of him.
“Something seems off about him,” he murmured more himself.
His eyes finally settled somewhere around Lucifer’s head and shoulders as he finally realised.
“Where are your wings and halo, angel?” Mephisto spat venomously.
Lucifer scowled and opened his mouth to respond.
“As you can see, Lucifer is no longer an angel,” Diavolo explained quickly before Lucifer had the chance to voice his retort, “he and his brothers—”
“And his brothers?” Mephisto interjected. “There’s more than one of them?”
“Yes Mephisto,” Diavolo replied patiently, “so Lucifer and his brothers will now become denizens of the Devildom—”
“You can’t be serious?” Mephisto scoffed and shook his head. “Pardon me for speaking out of turn, but you’re far too trusting, Lord Diavolo. What if he and his brothers have been sent here to spy for the Celest—”
“— and, as my good friend, I would like you to befriend Lucifer and his brothers,” Diavolo continued, speaking louder to drown out Mephisto’s words, “please help them until they are able to adjust to life here in the Devildom.”
“I refuse.” Mephisto said bluntly.
Diavolo frowned, “but Mephisto—”
“I’m sorry, Lord Diavolo, but I believe I’ve already voiced my opinions about this whole alliance with the Celestial Realm on numerous occasions. Especially where he is concerned.” Mephisto continued as he shot a disgusted look in Lucifer’s direction.
“Do you honestly think that this is the outcome that I wanted?” Lucifer finally snapped back. “Believe me, this situation is far from ideal for me too.”
Diavolo suppressed an exasperated groan, “Lucifer, please—”
“Oh, so the so-called fallen angel has something to say now, huh?” Mephisto sneered sarcastically, adding air quotations with his fingers as he said the words ‘fallen angel’ and taking a step towards Lucifer.
“Come now, Mephisto, that was uncall—” Diavolo tried again.
“What did you call me?” Lucifer asked in a low, dangerous voice as he also took a step closer to Mephisto.
“Now that’s enough, both of you!” Diavolo wedged himself between the two and pushed them apart, he kept his arms raised to keep the distance between Lucifer and Mephisto. “I understand that this is going to take some time to adjust to, but with a little support—”
“Some time to adjust?” Mephisto rounded furiously onto Diavolo instead. “You’re talking about taking in fallen angels! Do you even know the circumstances of why they’ve been cast out of the Celestial Realm?”
“Yes,” Diavolo replied softly as he slowly lowered his arms, “Lucifer has explained everything to me.”
“And you believe everything that he has to say? You really believe that the Celestial Realm would cast out a high ranking archangel and all of his brothers so easily, alone let them abscond to the Devildom?”
“Yes, I trust Lucifer.”
Mephisto stared between Diavolo’s earnest expression and Lucifer’s glower before he heaved a resigned sigh, turned his back on the pair and began to walk away.
“Mephisto, wait!” Diavolo called after him as he followed in the other demon’s footsteps.
“I’m sorry, but I cannot support this decision.” Mephisto said as he walked across the entrance hall with Diavolo keeping pace close behind him.
“Why don’t we go back and talk this all over with a cup of—”
“I’ve said my piece and there’s nothing that you can say or do to change my mind, Lord Diavolo.”
Mephisto paused for a moment when he reached the castle doors, resting his hand on the handle before he turned towards Diavolo again.
“This decision will have repercussions,” Mephisto warned, “the Celestial Realm isn’t likely to sit idly if you protect their fallen, this could lead to another war between the Devildom and the Celestial Realm.”
“I’m aware of that possibility.”
“And you’re still okay with this?” Mephisto frowned. “All of your dreams of uniting the three realms will go up in smoke!”
“I will still work towards a future where the three realms can live in harmony.”
Mephisto met Diavolo’s determined gaze.
“Then I guess this is goodbye,” Mephisto shook his head with a sigh before he opened the doors, walked out of the palace and down the stone steps.
“Mephisto!”
He ignored Diavolo’s calls and the tightening feeling in his chest that left him with a full ache with every step he took away from his closest and oldest friend.
“Mephistopheles.”
Mephisto let out an irritable sigh as the familiar voice reached his ears before he spun around in his seat to glare at the newcomer.
“This room is for members of the RAD newspaper club only, Lucifer.” Mephisto drawled before he turned back towards his computer. “So whatever it is that you want, make it quick.”
“Care to explain what this is.” Lucifer said curtly, ignoring Mephisto’s comment.
Mephisto rolled his eyes as he spun around in his seat once more to see that Lucifer was holding out his D.D.D towards him.
“It’s your D.D.D,” Mephisto smirked mischievously, “you can use it to call or text others, you know.”
“Don’t act coy with me,” Lucifer snapped, “I mean these text stickers!”
Mephisto leaned closer and pretended to survey the screen of the D.D.D with interest.
“Oh, those are the Princess Diavolo and Prince Lucifer stickers,” Mephisto nodded and offered the other demon another impish grin, “I was the one who created them.”
“So I’ve heard.”
“I’m very pleased with how the unicorn—”
“Delete them.”
“No can do,” Mephisto replied, instantly dropping his playful façade and donning a blunt demeanor instead as he turned back to the computer once more, “I was commissioned to create them by your brothers Mammon, Satan and Asmodeus. Besides, Lord Diavolo seems quite fond of them himself.” He added, glancing over his shoulder to smirk at the enraged Lucifer again.
“So it was those three.” Lucifer scowled as he stowed his D.D.D away into his uniform jacket pocket and turned to leave the room. “I’ll be dealing with them first, I won’t stand for anyone tarnishing Lord Diavolo’s image. This isn’t over, Mephistopheles.”
Mephisto watched as the door closed behind Lucifer and turned back towards the computer with an amused hum as he added an advertisement for the Princess Diavolo and Prince Lucifer stickers on the front page of the next issue of RAD’s newspaper.
“I’m sure it’s not over,” he mused aloud with a satisfied smile as he hit the print button.
