Cassiel is depicted in Francis Barrett's The Magus as a dragon-riding jinn 🔐 with a beard, again as the angel over Saturn.

"Please, no! Please, forgive me, I did not know it was forbidden!" Cassael pulled on the chains one single time before they decided not to struggle, hoping that their show of submission would earn them some mercy.

"Silence." The other angel gave them a heavy enough look to make them shrink in on themself, weighed down by the judgement they saw in their eyes. "You will talk only when I allow it until your punishment is over. You will take it with gratitude and grace, as you ought to."

Cassael had trouble feeling grateful for the corrections lately. Their mentors seemed agitated and easily angered, or maybe they had been extra clumsy; either way, they felt like their mistakes didn't warrant such severe abuse. But they had to be wrong. They had to. They were the problem here, they couldn't assess the situation well enough, they couldn't even feel right. They were nothing but a broken thing in need of fixing. They had to be grateful for that.

After all, broken things were useless, and useless things were thrown away. They had to be grateful to be given another chance. To be fixed and allowed to continue their work.

"Spread your wings, Cassael."

They did so without any objections. The punishments targeting their wings were always the worst. Setting the feathers on fire, throwing them in water until they were waterlogged and dragging them to the bottom, even just having to keep them spread for long amounts of time was agony. They weren't meant to be constantly spread out like that.

"You have flown over forbidden land. Your punishment is to cease flying altogether until your wings grow back."

Grow back? But–

Their back exploded with pain as the angel tore out their left wing, grabbing it closest to their body to make sure that the entire thing came away with one fluid motion. Cassael screamed and thrashed, the agony utterly unbearable, the feeling of blood trickling down their back making them sick.

"Stop! Stop! Please! I am so sorry, it was my fault, it was my fault! It will not happen again!"

"Such disrespect," the angel whispered. "I have told you to stay quiet and take it with gratitude."

"I am thankful for your guidance! Please, please do not rip out my other wing! Please! I have learned my lesson, I cannot fly with one wing!"

"You have not learned your lesson, clearly." The angel grabbed onto the base of their right wing, squeezing painfully hard. "I said quiet."

The shriek they let out at their other wing being severed was entirely out ot their control. The other angel seemed to think that they were able to disregard such intense pain in favour of a command, and maybe other angels were capable of that. Maybe they were the only one with a defect that didn't allow them to shut out the pain.

"This will do," they said, satisfied with their work. Cassael could do little else than stare in front of themself, bloody and exhausted, letting their body sag against the restraints. They could hear the blood gathering on the cloud below, if it hadn't eagerly drank it up. "You will stay here and reflect. You will not talk to anyone but me, and only after I give the word."

Cassael silently nodded. They had no reason to try to defy the angel now. Their wings were gone, their beatiful, pure–

The angel placed a hand on their head, and suddenly it felt like all the thoughts were sucked out of it. Only one emotion remained: the overwhelming guilt.

      mythological   background   and   influences

i thought i’d put together a little something regarding castiel’s mythological/biblical/ religious bases, mostly to have a reference for myself and/or anyone who’s curious!  i’ve seen a lot of this circulating amongst castiel fans, so i’m sure some of this isn’t new information to any of you, but i’ve been doing some more research recently and wanted to put it all down somewhere.  obviously i’m putting my own personal spin on a lot of this.  i’m going with the interpretation that ‘castiel’ is based mostly off of ‘cassiel,’ since that seems to be the fandom consensus.  there is mention of an angel ‘castiel,’ angel of thursdays, in davidson’s dictionary of angels, but that is one of the only references to them.  i’ve therefore decided to conglomerate the two, although  there are some major differences between cassiel and castiel (such as cassiel being an archangel and castiel... not...) and some inconsistencies in various sources, so disclaimer that none of this is cold hard fact!!

castiel is a seraph also known as cassiel, casiel, cassael, kaspha’il, cafziel, cafzyel, caphziel, casziel, kafziel, kasiel, qafsiel, qaphsiel, qaspiel, qephetzial, and quaphsiel.  their name means “speed of god” or “god is my anger.”  their symbols are a straight line, spear, or dragon, which they are occasionally depicted riding upon.  they are angel of saturn, tears, solitude, temperature, and saturdays and thursdays.  they are also frequently referred to as the angel who presides over the death of kings.  they are the patron angel of all those who would be overlooked or are in a weakened state, including orphans, the enslaved, the weakened, and the oppressed.  this dichotomy comes from their position as angel of saturn, and through it they represent the play of opposites, such as joy and sorrow, and the ability to experience events separately and consequently rather than everything happening at once, as it does in eternity.

      roles   and   duties

castiel, throughout their existence, has been an observer.  they are a watcher of the doings of mankind, and through their watching, they developed an acute fondness for humanity which many of their kin do not share.  their role as a watcher does not mean they have been entirely passive, however, although they have been involved less than many other angels.  they have been tasked with presiding over the death of kings and have witnessed the deaths of all great rulers and grieved for the just among them.  they also have a special position watching over those who would be overlooked, and they would occasionally whisper encouragements to those in particularly unfortunate circumstances.  generally, their interference didn’t go much beyond this, but they occasionally were struck with the urge to participate.  to do more.  this urge was never fully realized until they met the winchesters.

their title of angel of tears comes in part from their role as presider over the death of kings.  it is also borne out of their millennia of watching over humanity, particularly the suffering.  these tears are not literal (castiel rarely cries in their vessel, and angelic beings are incapable of literal crying) but are representative of their outpouring of emotion and depth of feeling.

castiel’s position as a seraph means they are a high-ranking celestial being.  as a subdivision of the angelic host, they are fifth highest out of ten places.  it also means they praise god through song and words, crying “holy, holy, holy.”  they have a fiery passion for doing god’s work and are fiercely devoted and loyal.  the seraphim are known for their ceaseless and eternal revolution of diving principles, and their radiant, undying light which dispels and destroys the shadows of darkness.  they are under the rule of the archangel gabriel.

      relations   with   the   host

castiel is said to “shew forth the unity of the eternal kingdom” and strives therefore for concord within the heavenly host.  throughout eternity, they have generally not acted or interfered unless ordered to do so by the host, although this changes after they raise dean winchester from hell.

castiel is one of the chief aids of the archangel gabriel, along with the angel hizkiel.  they are said to be the archangel’s near constant companions, and thus castiel has forged strong bonds with both.  castiel is said to be the bearer of gabriel’s standard and frequently accompanies gabriel wherever they go, and at times it is said they and hizkiel are the “wings of gabriel.”  

castiel shares their rule of saturday with the angel machatan, the angel uriel, and the angel seraquiel.

      manifestation   ,    powers   ,    etc   .

castiel is described as armed with a lightning-dripping sword, a bow, tempests, and powerful winds.  these weapons are only wielded fully while in their true form, although their powers manifest to a lesser degree while they are inside a vessel.  these manifestations come in many forms, one of the most common being electrical surges, short circuiting, etc.  before they become accustomed to keeping a reign on their power, they frequently caused lightbulbs to shatter, sparks to fly, televisions to switch to static, etc. when inhabiting a room.   and due to their status as a seraph, these manifestations often extend to include intense brightening of lights or flares of open flames.  even when holding a reign on their power, it isn’t uncommon for the air around them to feel electrically-charged to a minor extent.  

these manifestations intensify when castiel experiences strong emotions.  following their resurrection by god in s5, they come to include meteorological anomalies, although they are still much less intense than they would be were they in their true form.  light breezes, drops or rises in temperature, or disturbances in small bodies of water and open flames are among these manifestations.

in their true form, castiel’s powers come in the form of natural disasters such as tornados, hurricanes, and thunderstorms.  they wield lightning and winds and also has limited power in the form of fire, due to their seraphic heritage.  their position as angel of tears gives them some influence over and connection to the sea.
