“C’mon babies let’s call daddy,” you said as you gathered your three little children. “Mum we’re not babies anymore,” the eldest spoke up as your youngest climbed in your lap. “Alright my mature adults, let’s call your father,” you said in a fake stern voice. Your children laughed as they got settled. “You sound like daddy,” your son giggled as he sat down. "Okay is everyone ready?" you asked and they all nodded in agreement. You grabbed the laptop and pulled up Skype and they all giggled as it rang.
After two rings, John's face lit up the screen. "Well hello there," he said as he sat back and your children rushed to wave hi. "We all miss you, sweetie!" you exclaimed and blew him a kiss. "I miss you all too," he replied as he held a hand up to the screen. "Daddy guess what?" your middle said as she climbed onto your lap to see her dad better. "What, pumpkin?" he replied happily. "I lost a tooth," she exclaimed and showed her dad the empty gap in her front smile. "She's been showing everyone, sweetheart," you laughed as you placed your face back in the frame. You continued to have your other two children provide their updates, your eldest had gotten the best marks at school and your youngest recently learned how to tie their shoes. You could see your husband smile at them proudly as he praised all of their achievements. Eventually, you saw the time and knew it was time for bed. "Kiddies I think it's time we head up to bed, yeah?" you asked and you were immediately met with groans. "Don't act like that for your mother," Price scolded and the whining stopped. "Maybe if you ask nicely, Daddy can read us all a bedtime story," you smiled and they begged your laughing husband.
Eventually, he relented and your kids happily climbed down and raced upstairs. This was their favorite part of the night when John was away and were all dutifully ready to be tucked in. You followed with the laptop in hand and set it up so that all your children could see. "Alright, let's see what we have here," John chuckled, "I have a new one for you it's called '‎Goldilocks And The Three Bears'" your kids oooed in response as you sat next to your youngest bed. "I have a special guest," he continued and shifted the camera to the left, "Uncle Kyle is here and he'll be doing some of the voices." You waved as you saw the Sergeant appear on the screen. The kids screamed with happiness at the sight of their favorite uncle appearing. "Hi kids, I'm Goldilocks," he said in a high-pitched voice and you let out a small laugh. As soon as everyone settled, John prepared his best narrator voice and opened the book. "Once upon a time, there was a young girl named Goldilocks," he began. Before you knew it, he was reading the last few lines. By now, your children were fast asleep. The excitement from seeing their father and the laughter from Kyle's impressions had tuckered them out. You kissed them all gingerly before picking up your laptop and heading downstairs.
"Hi sweetheart," John said as you settled on the couch. "How are you doing?" you asked and his smile faltered a bit. "Tired, missing home," he replied and your heart ached slightly. "We miss you too, John," you whispered as you brought the device closer. "I'll be home soon, just have to tie up some loose ends," he noted. God you missed him. You knew what you had signed up for on your wedding day but these last few months had been hard. You sighed as he looked at your thoughtfully. "Want me to tell you a bedtime story?" he joked and that's how you fell asleep to your husband just talking.

“Daddie daddie daddie!” is all the warning Johnny got before his two twins came running to him. “Slow down there, wee little ones,” he laughed as he went to pick them up in his arms. After four years, Johnny would never get tired of this. “Mammy did face paint with us,” his son said as Johnny examined his face. You had in fact painted their faces and they were excited to show their father. “Let’s get a proper look at both of you,” he said as he sat them both down on the kitchen counter. His kids smiled widely at him and he could see a collection of butterflies and bees on his son’s small face and hearts and flowers on his daughters.
“Where’s your mam now?” he asked as he lowered them off the counter. His daughter excitedly grabbed her dad’s hand and led him to the master bathroom. You stood there washing off your hands and brushes to see your tiny terrors dragging Johnny in. You smiled when you saw them tugging at your husband's arm. You put the brushes down as your twins jumped up and down in excitement. “Hi sweetheart, everything good at the brief?” you asked as you walked over and kissed his cheek. Your kids squealed in disgust and hid their eyes as he held your face gently. "All good, love," he replied, "now what's all this face paint business about?" You looked down to see your kids running around as if they were in a sugar rush. "Ah I had them lying around and they were getting antsy waiting for you," you said and gestured for the twins to settle down. As you continued to clean and chat with Johnny, your daughter had a brilliant idea.
"Mam, can you do some face paint on Daddie?" she asked sweetly and you looked over at Johnny who looked equally as excited. You sighed as you had just finished cleaning your brushes but you always folded for your children and your husband. "I guess I could," you said and the whole group cheered. You set up your station again and Johnny sat on the bathroom counter, leaning down so you could see his face. He squirmed a little under your grip and you ran your fingers over his stubble. "I could make something work," you said before pulling out the paints in your other hand and beginning your masterpiece. You made sure as you were painting to tell your kids not to ruin the surprise. Johnny held onto your waist as you painted. Your children moved around every so often to get a better angle of your work.
"And done," you said with a smile and he turned to look at himself in the mirror. "You've outdone yourself," he said as he examined the delicate brush strokes. "I wanna see!" your son called and Johnny hopped off the counter so they could get a better look. The twins gripped his cheeks and giggled at the splashes of yellow and blue and white. "It's a duck!" your daughter exclaimed. "It's a family of rubber ducks," you said as you bent down, "There's a daddie, a mammy, and two little ones following." They moved Johnny's face around to see the two parent ducks on one cheek and the two smaller ones on the other side. "That's us!" your daughter said as she touched the wet paint. She quickly rubbed it off on her dress and you sighed as you had just gotten them changed that morning. They ran to the playroom and before you could follow, Johnny held you back and kissed you. At first, you thought it was romantic but you soon realized he had brushed off the paint onto your face. "You're a bastard," you joked as you examined your face. "Ye but I'm yours," he said and you laughed as you went to follow your wild children.

"Shhh don't ruin the surprise," Kyle could hear you say as the door slowly cracked open. All morning, you and your daughter had worked on something special for him. According to your five-year-old, it was "Top Secret" and Kyle was happy to catch up on some shows while you and her worked in the living room. Your daughter jumped onto the bed as Kyle reached to pause his show and you joined soon after. "Okay it's time to close your eyes," she said and Kyle put his hands over his eyes. You smiled as you handed your daughter the masterpiece she had been working on. "You can open them now," she giggled and shoved the paper into his hands. "This is amazing Ivy," he said as you lay down next to them. "She made it all himself," you smiled as you turned to see the drawing.
Today was Kyle's last week before a long deployment and your daughter had wanted to give him something to have. All morning, she drew and colored a drawing of your family including your German Shepherd. The childish drawing had you and Kyle in front of your house and your daughter running around with your dog in a yard of green grass. Kyle kissed your head as your daughter described the scene and pointed out all the drawings. "...then we have mummy, she's wearing the green dress you got her," she said as she continued to point. "And who's that handsome guy?" Kyle said as he pointed to himself. Your son smiled up at you before replying. "That's you, Daddy," she said, "I wanted to draw your uniform but it was too hard so you're wearing a shirt and shorts." Kyle laughed as the drawing was surprisingly accurate, the clothes were things you wore daily and the house looked like the one you were sitting in.
"Well I'm sure my little artist is hungry," he said as he got up and placed your daughter on the ground. "Let's go out to eat today," he announced and your daughter jumped up and down. "I wanna pick out my outfit today," she triumphantly said before running off to her room. Kyle took this opportunity to grab you and hold you in his arms. "Thinking about another little one?" he joked and you laughed as you rolled over to face him. "Not when you're away," you exclaimed, "don't even get me started on the weird cravings Ives gave me." He kissed you gently and you knew you would revisit this as soon as he got back. "She doesn't want you to leave," you whispered after you sat in silence for a few moments. "I'm going to miss you too," he replied and held you closer into his chest. Parting was always such a bittersweet time for the family.
Before you knew it, Ivy came storming back into your bedroom. "Look at me!" she said as she twirled around. You and Kyle propped up to see her in a similar green dress. "Oh Ives, I told you that you were going to wear that when we picked up Daddy from the airport," you scolded but Kyle placed a gentle hand on your waist. "It's a special occasion though!" she exclaimed and you just smiled at her early surprise. "I love it, sweetheart," Kyle replied as he helped you up. "I only think it's fair if Mum wears her green dress," he smiled and kissed you on the forehead. Despite having the surprise ruined, you enjoyed walking around the streets of your town with your daughter in matching dresses and your husband lovingly smiling at you.

Simon woke up to hear the soft taps on the piano and your soothing voice guiding your son. “Alright sweetheart let’s try that again,” he heard your voice instruct as he played the beginning notes to Heart and Soul. Simon lay in bed for a while as he listened to the peaceful melody. He had been gone for too long and your son had gotten even better since he was last home. You were now able to play duets with him and didn't have to direct him through the sheet music. He smiled softly as he got out of bed and made his way down the stairs. He made sure to walk gently as to not disturb his two musicians. As he descended, you joined in with the duet and began to play the other notes. “Heart and soul, I fell in love with you,” you began and Simon heard your son's little voice join in. Your voice was light and it filled the home with life. When you were first pregnant and he found out it was a boy, Simon feared he would turn out like him but after seven years all of his worries were quelled.
"...and stole a kiss from the night," you both finished as Simon entered the living room. After a few years, you knew when Simon was watching so it didn't surprise you to see him in the doorway. "When did you learn that?" he asked as your son ran up to hug him. He held him to his leg as he watched you turn from the piano slowly. By now, you were about 7 months along and were clearly showing. In just a few more weeks, you would be welcoming a little girl. "I taught him a few weeks ago, he's a fast learner," you proudly announced as you closed the piano lid. "I can play two songs now," your son boasted as Simon lifted him up and tussled his dark hair. "Better than I could ever do," he replied and he lowered your son and made his way over to you. "We might just have to get you lessons, Elliott," you said as your son joined you back on the piano bench. He beamed at you as you looked at Simon's mini-me. "And soon we'll have our own little orchestra," you continued and patted your growing belly, "she loves when Elliott plays, I imagine she's dancing in there." In the morning sunlight, you looked radiant and Simon kissed your forehead gently.
As you shared a brief moment together, your son insisted on playing a new piece you had just started to teach him. "I don't know El, you heard how bad I was singing last week," you joked as he looked at you with puppy eyes. Eventually, you relented and you motioned for Simon to watch. You cleared your throat as your son stretched his fingers and found the starting notes. Simon's ears were soon filled with the melody of Edith Piaf's La Vie en Rose. He smiled softly as you soon began to sing. "Des yeux qui font baisser les miens," you began in an attempt at emulating Piaf's elegant French accent, "Un rire qui se perd sur sa bouche." He watched as Elliott's hands moved around the keys as you sang the romantic song. Despite not being as musically inclined, Simon recognized you were in the key of C, something you had taught him. He closed his eyes as you both continued to perform in sync, savoring the melody and your soft vocals. As soon as he finished with a few ending notes, Simon clapped softly. You and your son laughed as you bowed to your audience.
"It's still a work in progress," you laughed as scooted off the piano and joined next to Simon's side. As you enjoyed the soft moment with your head on his chest, Elliott posed a question. "What if we name the baby Rose," Elliott spoke up and you both thought for a moment. "But out of all the songs why Rose?" Simon asked as you looked at your son. "Mum's always so happy when she sings it, I think the baby would like it," he continued and Simon listened intently. You had been flipping through baby books for weeks and no one of them truly resonated. As you thought about the idea, you suddenly felt the baby kick and smiled. "I think little Rosie agrees," you said happily before sitting down. Simon joined on the other side of the piano and you three squished on the small bench. "Rose it is then," Simon said and enveloped you all in a hug. Before you could get up, your son had a brilliant idea. "Dad let me show you how to play 'Chopsticks'" he exclaimed and Simon knew he was trapped with his musicians.

Tumblr media
Washington, D.C., 2011
(Reader POV)
You’d gone to three different funerals since moving to D.C. Three more than you would have liked, obviously, no one ever really wants to go to a funeral.
The first had been your father’s. You had Jamie and your mom, but you needed Spencer. He was out on a case and you couldn’t blame him for not being there, but he made up for it a million times over. Your dad’s death wasn’t unexpected, and while it hurt to say goodbye, it was relatively easy to move on.
The second had been for Aaron’s ex-wife, Haley. You didn’t really know her, but Aaron was your friend and you wanted to support him. That and Jamie got along very well with Jack, acting almost as an older cousin, and you know how important family is when you lose a parent.
The third and most recent funeral was the worst one: Emily’s. She was there one day, raring to go and take on the world, gone the next.
The day you found out was just terrible. JJ had called you herself to tell you. You managed to stay calm until you hung up, when you practically threw your phone onto the kitchen table and collapsed into a chair, tears pouring down your face as silent sobs wracked your body.
Jamie ran in at the sound of you crying, “Mom? What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
You shook your head, unable to speak. Jamie wordlessly wrapped his arms around your shoulders and held you as you struggled to regain your voice. When you could finally breathe and relay the news you just received, you choked out, “Aunt Emily died last night.”
Then Jamie started crying too. He curled up into your shoulder and sobbed into your shirt, soaking you to the skin, almost like he was little again. You crumbled at the sound of his whines and cries. Every part of your chest ached with the weight of your grief.
“What happened to her?” He finally whimpered.
“She has a dangerous job,” You didn’t even notice the tense you used, “A bad man was after her.”
“Well, is everyone else okay? What about Uncle Derek? What about Doc—”
“Everyone else is fine, baby, no one else was hurt. Doc’s fine.”
You sat still for God knows how long, silent, clutching each other like a lifeline, praying this was all just a dream and that you’d get a call from Emily telling you it was all some sick joke. Of course, you’d be furious with JJ, but at least there wouldn’t be a hole in your family where Emily had once been.
Your mother came over to help you cook, the same role you had taken years prior while your father was sick. She consoled you and Jamie for the next two days and then drove you to the funeral. You got out of the car and walked in silence to the church, clutching Jamie’s hand as you entered.
Aaron was the first at the door. He wasn’t one for hugs, but when he saw you, exhausted and barely standing, he pulled you and Jamie in tight. The hug was brief, but it helped, God, did it help. Dave was just behind him, and he didn’t hesitate. He ruffled Jamie’s hair and gave you a kiss on both cheeks. JJ was holding Henry in the corner, and Will gave you a weak smile. Derek and Penelope were holding one another, both shaking as they cried. Your grip on Jamie’s hand grew tighter, tighter, tighter until you saw him.
You then dropped Jamie’s hand as you ran over, arms open wide as your son followed close behind, “Spence--”
He returned your hug instantly, burying his face in your hair, “I’m sorry I didn’t call--”
You felt Jamie join the hug, but you kept your head buried in Spencer’s chest, “No, I’m sorry too, I didn’t know what to do.”
“Me neither.” He pulled away, wiping away some tears and sniffling, “I’ve just been holed up in my room reading Vonnegut all for the past three days.”
Of course, “What books?”
“Mostly Slaughterhouse-Five, it was her--”
“Her favorite,” You nodded as you spoke the last part in unison with him.
“Yeah. I read it out loud just…” His voice cracked and the words looked painful to get out, “Just in case she could hear me.”
Your heart broke imagining him wrapped in blankets, eyes rimmed red as they glazed over the worn-out pages. You ached at the thought of his voice cracking just as it did before as he read for hours and hours, begging the universe to let Emily hear him, “She did. And she loved it.”
“I just hope she didn’t realize I was crying,” he muttered, and it shattered you, “She wouldn’t want us to cry for her.”
“You’re right, but I know she’d be unbelievably offended if we didn’t cry just a little bit,” Spencer’s tearful smile was enough to make you feel slightly better. There was still hope.
Your mom took Jamie home after the wake, knowing that you needed time with the team to feel like a person again. You went home with Spencer. He shouldn’t have to be alone anymore.
“You’re really good at taking care of me,” he smiled weakly, sipping the tea you made for him.
“Yeah, I had a good teacher.” Your mother was always there when you lost someone. You had your ups and downs, but she was a good mom.
“Does it get easier? Losing someone?”
“No. It always hurts just as bad,” you sigh, “But moving on used to be a lot harder.”
“Do you still miss him?”
“Of course I do, but less than I used to.” You still talked to your dad sometimes, something you did as a kid when he wasn’t home, just telling him about your day or narrating what you were doing. Even after all these years, you still found yourself explaining to no one that you had to run to store and buy bread to make Jamie’s lunch.
“I see little pieces of him everywhere I go. Jamie has the same exact smile. His favorite book when he was little was the same one my dad read to me. No one ever really leaves. Family, friends, they stick with us.”
“I’ve never lost a friend before. When Gideon left, I knew he was out there. Same with Elle. I could have Garcia find them right now and call them up to see how they’re doing, but Emily--” his voice cracked too much for him to want to continue, so he dropped it altogether.
“Did I ever tell you about my college roommate, Juliet?”
“No.”
“We were best friends. We did everything together: Movie nights, parties, all that. The night of our last final senior year, we decided to go clubbing to celebrate.”
You told him the whole story. The drinking, the dancing, the guy. You don’t remember his name, but you remember trusting him. He was sweet and Juliet liked him, so when she came to you at the bar after dancing with him telling you she was going home with him, you let her.
“I was happy for her! She had just gone through a breakup a few months before, so it was nice to see her getting some,” you let out a weak laugh, “I remember the last thing I said before she left was ‘Okay, have fun, call me in the morning, we’ll get brunch. I love you.’” Spencer winced, almost as if he knew where this story was going. Given his line of work, he was expecting far worse, but he at least knew that we didn’t get lunch the next morning.
“I went home a little bit later, I got bored, so I got a taxi home.”
You close your eyes and sigh deeply, “I’m in the back seat when I get a call. It was Juliet’s phone.”
“She wasn’t calling you, was she?”
“No, it was the police. Juliet didn’t have a good relationship with her parents, so I was her emergency contact.” You had to plan the funeral, invite her parents, look them in the eye and lie to them that Juliet wanted to make amends with them. The horrified guilt on their faces almost made it worth it, “The car she was in got t-boned when the guy ran a red light. He wasn’t as sober as we thought he was.”
“She didn’t make it.” Spencer guessed for you.
“No. She was dead before they got her out of the ambulance.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. If Juliet hadn’t…” You still couldn’t bring yourself to actually say it, “I wouldn’t have moved home, I wouldn’t have gotten back with Kyle, and I wouldn’t have Jamie. I don’t wanna tell you that something good will come out of this, because that’s a horrible thing to hear, but looking for an opportunity to find something good can’t hurt.”
“I can’t just look for something new when all i can think about is how I should have been able to help!”
“You really think I didn’t blame myself for what happened to Juliet? That every night for years after I thought I could have done something differently, and sure, I could have, but it’s not like I knew what was going to happen, and I couldn’t keep blaming myself.”
“It’s not the same, you don’t get it.” His fingers ghosted over old scars on his forearms, scars you didn’t want to think about where they came from.
“I do, Spencer. Emily was my friend too. And because she was my friend, I know she would never let you blame yourself for it. She knows you can’t save them all. All we can do is save ourselves,” you took his hand in yours, he still tensed up, “‘cuz that’s all the people we lose want us to do.”
He turned his head up from the floor and met your eyes. Once you gazed into those deep hazel irises, the tension in his hand melted away. His shoulders slumped, and he let out a deep breath, squeezing your hand like a lifeline, “Thank you.”
“Of course, Spence.”
“I’m sorry for snapping.”
“You apologize too much.” You had nearly forgotten exactly what he said to you that night in the hotel bar in Vegas all those years ago, but clearly, he hadn’t, he couldn’t, and he didn’t, because after a few moments of staring into your eyes and slowly drifting towards you in peaceful silence, he closed the gap between you both and kissed you.
Spencer Reid was kissing you.
This was happening.
Nearly two decades of being friends--
Years of being totally, ridiculously, and most importantly, cluelessly in love with each other, Spencer Reid was kissing you. You were almost so overjoyed at that moment as you started to kiss him back that you nearly forgot that your friend was dead and you were supposed to be comforting him. This wasn’t comfort, this was what Kyle did to you all those years ago.
You broke the kiss before he did something he’d regret, “Spence…”
“Oh my god,” he removed his hands from your face and shifted his entire body away from you, “I’m so sorry.”
“No, don’t-”
“Oh my god, I’m an idiot!” He ran his fingers through his hair, pulling at the strands as his hands landed at the back of his neck, forcing his head to stare in his lap.
“No you’re not! Hey. Genius. Look at me.” He didn’t. “You’re not. You’re just in a bad place, I get it.”
“No you don’t. This time, you don’t.”
“What do you m—”
“Look, I don’t wanna kick you out but I really think you should leave.”
“Oh… yeah… sure… okay.” You slowly rose from the couch on weak knees. Whether it was from adrenaline or anxiety, you couldn’t tell.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be! Just… please, take care of yourself?” You glance around the room for your belongings, “Shower, eat something, get some rest, please. And call me if you need anything--”
“Y/N, please, just go.”
You felt tears sting your eyes as you reached for the doorknob. You turned your head just enough to look over your shoulder to say, “Goodnight, pretty boy,” before you left. You closed the door behind you and leaned against it, breathing heavily.
           (Spencer’s POV)
Why was I kicking her out?
Why was I telling her to leave?
Why was I pushing her away?
Why did I kiss her?
Why did she push me away?
Why did she call me “pretty boy?” She never--
The pieces fell into place as they often do, all at once with the force of a car slamming into a pole at fifty miles per hour.
“Goodnight, Pretty Boy.”
“Goodnight, Princess.”
She remembered that night.
She remembered that night when I drove her home and put her to bed and--
And I told her I had a crush on her in high school.
And I almost said I loved her.
And I almost kissed her then.
God, I wish I had. Any time would have been better than now.
          (Reader POV)
You didn’t know you could miss someone so much while they were behind just one door. You could’ve turned around right then and knocked and waited for him to be ready to talk about what just happened. About him kissing you. About you kissing back. About you stopping him. About that drunken night when you let it slip how pretty you thought he was.
You should’ve just waited.
But you couldn’t stand to be that close to him while he wanted to be as far away from you as possible.
So you ran.
You practically sprinted down the stairs and out of his building as quickly as you could, getting in your car and pulling out of the parking lot and getting the fuck away before you hurt anyone else, including yourself.
          (Spencer POV)
I couldn’t just let her walk out like that.
I had to say something.
I had to go after her.
I had to get her back.
I needed her.
But when I opened the door, it was like she had never been there.
I leaned on my door frame staring at the staircase down the hall, wishing I had the energy to run after her, to catch her before she reached her car, to stop her from driving away, to tell her I was sorry, to beg her to please, please, come back upstairs and talk to me, but my feet were fixed to the floor and my legs were weak. I just closed my door with my back and slid down to the floor, unable to bring myself to cry anymore. I sat there for god knows how long until I found the energy to crawl over to the coffee table where I had left my phone, picked it up, and dialed a number.
          (Reader POV)
You jumped slightly at the sound of your phone ringing, you shuffled through your bag in the passenger seat, desperately trying to find it before the light turned green. Some foolish part of your mind told you it was Spencer, you wished it was Spencer, you wanted nothing more than to turn your car around and talk it all out with him, tell him you were sorry, that you loved him, that you needed him, but your heart sank when you looked at the screen and saw the number.
It was a just fucking spam call.
You threw your phone back in your seat and beat your fists against the steering wheel, groaning and wishing the fucking light would just turn green already. When it finally did, you slammed on the gas a bit too quickly, sending the car jolting forward. You barely stopped the entire rest of the ride home, the universe must have sensed your impatience. As you finally pulled into your driveway, your skull felt as though it was packed with cotton, your tear tracks drying on your cheeks.
You raced up the steps to your door, fussing with the keys and trying to unlock the door as quickly and quietly as possible. You inevitably made noise as you entered, prompting a light to turn on in the living room. Your mom rose from the couch she had been sleeping on, her face dropping from annoyed to concerned.
“Toots, you’re home already? I thought you wouldn’t be back until morning.”
You had thought that you were fresh out of tears, but apparently, you still had more to spare, seeing as you broke the second the words left her mouth.
“Oh my, what happened?” She raced towards you, wrapping you in a hug, “Is Spencer okay? Did something happen?”
As confused and sad as you were, you couldn’t stop the smile that had suddenly appeared on your face, “He kissed me.”
“He what?” She broke the hug, holding your face in her hands and wiping tears off of your cheeks, “Then honey, why on Earth are you here?”
          (Spencer POV)
“You kicked her out? Why?”
“Why do you think I called you, Jennifer? What do I do? How do I fix this?”
“Well, what exactly happened?”
“I freaked out, she came over, we talked, I,” I took a deep breath and braced myself for her reaction, “I kissed her—”
She almost choked on her coffee, “And you didn’t lead with that? Don’t you think that’s a little important?”
“I was trying to avoid reliving it for as long as possible.”
“You’ve wanted this since high school, why wouldn’t you want to relive it?”
“She pulled away.” There was no anger or sadness behind my words. I don’t sound hurt as I recount the scene, “She took my hand, I kissed her, she stopped me.”
JJ’s hand brushed over my shoulder and I flinched away slightly.
“I apologized immediately, she wasn't mad or anything, I just…” I trailed off, unable to admit that I just couldn’t look at her anymore. I never thought I’d get tired of seeing her face, but I had needed her to leave. When she pulled away, all I could think about was the sound of Alexa Lisbon sneering at me as Kyle and his goons tied me to that goal post.
“She wanted to help me, and I know she did, but…”
“She couldn’t.” JJ finished my sentence.
I shook my head, “Not this time.”
“But now you want her to come back?”
“And I don’t know how to tell her that because I fucked up.”
“What did she say after you told her to leave? Did she just go?”
          (Reader POV)
“I told him not to feel bad and to take care of himself.” You hadn’t had time to tell him how much you wanted to kiss him but neither one of you was in the right state of mind for that.
“Right, yeah, and did he say anything else?”
You winced at the memory of how his voice sounded. “He kept telling me to leave, so I just went for the door and said--”
          (Spencer POV)
“‘Goodnight, pretty boy,’” I grumbled, “That was the last thing she said.”
“Okay?”
“She never calls me Pretty Boy.” I told her the whole story. When I was done, her eyebrows were drawn together and lips were pressed together in a thin, worried line uttering, “Spence…”
“What?”
She sighed, saying nothing and smirking slightly to herself, but saying nothing.
“Jennifer.”
“She loves you, genius.”
“Then why’d she leave?”
“Because you told her to. And…” she hesitated, almost scared to say anything else. I was scared to hear it. JJ took my coffee away and dumped it down the sink, a silent indicator that I had enough and needed to go to bed.
She turned back to me and leaned over the table again, making sure I'd look her in the eyes, “She’d do anything for you.”
I just stared down on my hands on the table, unable to say another word, unable to defend myself, unable to fight anymore.
Because I knew she was right.

I have another one shot for today. If y'all don't mind.
Gary's Undercover Tour Inside the Task Force 141 Base
The following are the contents of a 10 minute video that Task Force 141 Sargeant Gary 'Roach' Sanderson keeps in a flashdrive hidden below the memory foam of his extra shoes he doesn't use.
He always wanted to create YouTube videos to gain popularity but the nature of his work doesn't allow him to upload such content. But that didn't stop him from creating such videos.
--------
The video starts with Roach extending his arm high up like a selfie, he waves quickly at the camera and smiles.
"Hello everyone, and by everyone I mean only me. I'm not allowed to disclose anything in this video to the general public so I guess this is just for me." he begins.
"Today, I'm doing an undercover tour to the lovely Task Force 141 base located in Cr- I mean somewhere here on Earth." he grins, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
"You may ask? Roach, why do you call it undercover? Well my friend, it is because I'll be using this hidden camera pen I found in Capt. MacTavish's office last week, and they'll never suspect that they're being filmed!" He continued shifting the view to a room full of bunk beds.
"This is the quarters. Most of us sleep here, while higher officials and VIPs get their own rooms. This is my bed and on top of mine is Ghost's." he patted his sheets and raised his camera pen up, Ghost's bed was just a plain bed with folded clothes on top of it. No posters, or something on the walls, just plain nothing.
"Mine's got a picture of my family back home, my schedule and a checklist of weekly PTs which I hate so much." he explained.
"Oi Roach, who are you talkin' to?" Ghost's voice asked from behind the camera. Roach quickly clipped the pen on his shirt and faced Ghost, who just came from outside. Even in the secrecy of the bunker, he still wears his signature baclava mixed with a plain black t-shirt and cargo pants.
"Nothing, did I say something? You might be just hearing things..." he lied as he slowly exits the room. The video was shaky, but it was showing a short hallway with an open door on the end.
"That was close... No one should know about this undercover mission" He whispers on the camera, panting as he does it.
"Oi! Roach!" a deep scottish accent called him. The feed quickly stops and peeks inside the office. It was a simple and small office with a bookshelf just behind the den desk, a huge glass window overviewing the entrance of the base fills half the wall.
"Yes Captain?" Roach asks, trying not to sound exhausted.
"Have you seen a pen around ere? Last time I saw it was in this desk, but I can't find it now." The Captain runs his hand across his mohawk, looking slightly worried.
"Apologies, but I don't have any idea what you're talking about." Roach lies and exits the area making his way to the huge double doors just a few steps from Captain MacTavish's office.
"Ah. The cafeteria." Roach swings the double doors open, showing an empty hall, full of tables and chairs.
"This is where the Task Force eats, sometimes when we're very free, we push all the tables to the side and make this a huge theatre where they'll let us borrow a projector and watch a movie from that big white wall. That is if we're really free and nothing bad is going on in the world." he explains while walking the path to the other double door.
He swings the door open and in front of him was a huge hall, it has three circling sofas lower than the ground where some of his mates were sitting together discussing things. The audio was full of chatter, like when you're in your high school hallway. Roach gets called a lot of times and he turns to every one of them as the camera shows them waving at him.
The camera makes its way outside, just across the road was a training course where his allies practice a bunch of exercises in order to stay physically fit. He simply crosses this area letting the camera focus on how hardworking the people he's with are. And you can see an old man with an explorer hat on the watch tower, crossing his arms while looking at the soldiers training.
Once the coast is clear, he began talking again.
"This is the shooting range and the combat area. This is where we train how to use our guns and combat skills in different situations. My favorite part here is they let you slice up some fruits." he narrates as he makes his way inside.
"Doing the shooting range today, Roach?" a young looking man with a baseball cap asked.
"Yeah Kyle, er Gaz!" Roach replies in panic and they both high fived as Gaz exits the area. Gary once again crosses through the facility, this time the camera was picking up loud explosions and gunshots.
"Now for our last stop, the hangar." His voice was bearly audible, but at the end of the said facility was a small door leading to a runway. Gusts of wind filled the camera audio as Roach walks across the blistering heat to the Hangar.
"Nikolai! Say hi to my camera!" Roach yells as he pulls out the pen and shows it to the russian man, who happens to fly a remote controlled helicopter.
"Hello Roach's Camera. Hey isn't that the pen Soap is look-" Nikolai spoke in his russian accent in which Gary shushed.
"Can you attach this pen to your helicopter? I want it to zoom away as I end the video." Roach asks excitedly. Nikolai on the other hand, didn't hesitate. The feed that followed was of how their hands cover the whole view as they attach it to the microphone as both of them wave goodbye and their figures become smaller as the helicopter ascends, the words "The End" show as the screen turns to black and the video stops.

chapter 2: THIS ISN'T A SELF-INSERT I SWEAR-
Hey guys! It’s me, Narrator (and Rewriter) here! Today we will be continuing with Chapter 2 of the a/b/o fic! Yes, you heard that right! Bet you didn’t expect to see either of us again, bitches!
“Shut the fuck up,” Rose scowled (new character!!!), “this story isn’t about you.”
“Do we really have to do this whole dog people thing, again?” groaned Quartz, turning around to face their little corner.
Yes. Yes we do. 💜
“Stop complaining,” said our favorite alpha / president / inkling / dog / person… Squid!! “You fucking omega bitch.”
Sunny was still lingering in the doorway. Her eyes flickered throughout the different items in the room, searching for something to be interested in. To be honest, Quartz arguing with Squid for the seventh time wasn’t that engaging. Or maybe she just ignored Quartz because they were from the Nether. We’ll never know ~ *dissolves*
“Ew, a beta,” - Squid had finally noticed her, but it seemed to not turn out as well as she expected - “Well, you’re actually okay, for a beta, but only because you know the truth about Nether people, like me.”
“Ohmygoodness!” Sunny squealed. “Another racist person like me!”
Quartz squinted to look at this booklet-type-thing (it’s a script?) a script.
“Asterisk, sobs, Asterisk,” they deadpanned. Rose looked over Quartz’s shoulder, also peering to look at Quartz’s script. “Are you doing this to be funny,” he hissed, crossing his arms, “or did you actually forget your lines?”
Haha, guys, (the narrator had silenced Rose with their magic writing powers), stop letting people know that this is scripted, hah :).
“Haha,” Sleepy the TV person laughed, as the narrator didn’t hold a knife to his back, “Yeah guys, this is totally a natural interaction!”
Anyways, guys, on this episode of ‘I’m fucking sleep-deprived help me’: we’re making y’all’ve to date each other!
Everyone had different expressions splatted across each of their faces, but they all had a general feeling of shock.
“You’re what?” a dumbfounded Quartz exclaimed.
Yeah, so anyway the both of us are going to stop being a character now so bye 💜
“What the fuck, narrator and rewriter,” Rose yelled, “you can’t just, abandon us in this shitty fucking plot like that!”
But he was too late, because we’re already gone bitch 💜
Addict shook their head, trying to keep sane and happy for the others. They knew exactly what Kyle and Pepsi would do if they stepped out of line. “This is fine,” they forcefully grinned. Wow, this was their first line, in this entire chapter!! Woah!!
“No the fuck it’s not,” seethed Quartz. “Also, aren’t I already in a canon relationship already?”
Squid glared at Quartz, arching feir back to look bigger and superior. “And this takes you off the dating table, how?” Fey turned feir head in disgust at the others. “I refuse to date any of you fucking omega ass piglin fuckers,” fey announced.
“Ohmahgawsh, you’re so right, alpha Squid, :3, :D, ;),” Sunny the fellow racist sighed.
“Yes, you get it,” - Squid gestured to a flustered Sunny - “you racist moth. But, I still don’t respect you, you fucking beta.”
Sleepy laughed in dominance (could computers laugh??? Or is that just a social construct?), “Yeah, get that beta’s ass,” he cheered.
“Indeed, Adrian, my fellow alpha. We’re sooo out of everybody’s league,” Squid boasted.
But, if you remember (which you obviously don’t), Sleepy is in fact not an alpha, but an 🥴😩😏 omega~
“I fucking hate it here,” Rose fumed. “Anyways, I’m leaving,” he said, picking up Quartz, and stomping out of the room, “and I’m taking this fucking nether person with me.”
Addict flinched at the door slamming. “Fuck. Those two are like, the main two people that I’m shipped with.”
Squid cocked feir head. “Aren’t we married?”
“We are, but nobody cares.”
Squid sighed in relief. “Good. Clearly, the fandom knows that you hate being with me,” fey read off the script. “Wait, what-” And that’s when Squid suddenly shut up.
“Colon, start, parenthesis,” the racist mot- I mean Sunny said. Oh, yeah, did we mention that everybody still dog people?
Anyway, yes, everybody’s still dog people or something.
Squid gazed around the room with an expression as blank as paper. “Ok, so we’re like, romantically pairing up or something. Isn’t that kind of creepy since we’re the characters of mostly minors-” Shushity shush do not say that. Squid shrugged in understanding. “Ok, narrator. By the way,” fey inquired, “What’s your rank in the a/b/o ranking system? Just so I can tell if I should respect you or not.”
Uhhhhh, fuck. Alpha, beta, omega, how did these things work anyways-
The narrator shoved Squid so that fey stumbled to the floor, then sprinted out of the room.
Squid stood up. “Rude,” fey frowned, dusting feirself off. Fey looked around the room once again. “Uhh. Sleepy! Sleepy, yeah.”
“Hey,” fey purred, leaning towards Sleepy. “Fellow alpha~”
Sleepy himself was confused. “Uh, hi?”
“Do you want to be in a ~romantic~ relationship, so that we can finish this dumb fucking story faster, 🥺,” said Squid, pointing feir fingers at each other.
“Haha, no ❤,” Sleepy replied, pushing Squid away.
Squid’s eyes widened in shock. “I thought I trusted you, fellow alpha!”
Sleepy shrugged. “Sounds like a you problem, to be honest.”
“Ugh,” Squid whined,” fine then! Then, uhhh,” fey looked around the room for the third time today. Fey grabbed an ecstatic Sunny by the arm. “There. I’m dating this racist beta moth or whatever, can I leave now?”
‘Fine,” the narrator groaned, opening the door that they had just fixed after Sunny kicked it open. Squid sauntered out, dragging Sunny behind.
And then there were two.
Sleepy yawned (how is he a computer at this point?) as they just stood there.
Addict broke the silence. “Uh, hey?”
“You know this is a really forced interaction,” Sleepy yelled at the narrator, “right?” The narrator stood in front of the door, bracing themself on it to keep anyone from leaving.
Sleepy rolled their eyes in mock understanding. “Hiii, Addict,” he deadpanned, glaring at the short-ass little ender dragon spawn with a fire in their eyes. “You know the only way to actually leave is to say that we’re dating, right?”
“Yeah, but I don’t really feel like doing that right now, sooo,” Sleepy strolled towards the narrator and-
-----
“Hah, I disabled the door lock.”
“You fucking smashed it to pieces with your computer screen head.”
“Haha, yeah, looked cool, right?”
“No?”
“Cool, anyways,” Sleepy jabbed a thumb at the door behind them, “let’s just get the fuck out of here.”
“Uhh, okay, fine.” Addict grabbed his hand, letting them lead them to the door and drag them out.
-----
They both heard the door, that they were supposed to guard, open with a creak, followed by hurried walking. Oh fuck, weren’t they supposed to guard the door - oh fuck. Their boss was really going to have their asses on a silver plate by the time this was reported.
They laid on the floor, giving up all hope whatsoever, still in pain from getting ✨bonked✨.
Were they dead? Were they fine?
Find out next time on~
The gang a/b/o fic :)

March 7, 2021: Onward (2020) (Part One)
Finding Nemo.
Tumblr media
That’s my favorite Pixar film. Real talk, no arguments, and today’s movie? NOT dethroning it. This movie is so hard-wired into my brain, that the second I typed the words of the title, the theme song ran through my head, where it lives rent-free. It will be a cold day when I don’t find an excuse to shout “NEMOOOO!!!! I HAVE TO FIND MY SON!!” at any opportune moment. I will never stop swimming. Whenever I catch a Chinchou or Lanturn in a Pokémon game, I name it “Goodfeeling’sgone”.
SHARK BAIT OOH HA HA
Tumblr media
YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE DEPTHS OF MY LOVE FOR THIS MOVIE.
...Ahem. So, yeah, I love FInding Nemo. For the record, the sequel ain’t bad. And also for the record, there’s only one Pixar movie that I consider to be bad, and it’s the one you’d think. You know, the one about ageism. The one where somebody dies by torture? The bad spy movie?
...the second one about cars?
Tumblr media
Which means, YES. I DON’T THINK The Good Dinosaur IS THAT BAD! Not exactly good, but its gorgeous, and just kinda boring, not outright terrible. That Styracosaurus, though...that dude is great.
Anyway, off of Pixar for a sec, huh? What about fantasy? I’m a big tabletop RPG nerd, and I’m currently the GM for a Pathfinder campaign, a Pokémon RPG, and a Mutants and Masterminds game, while also playing in a Pathfinder game as well. Yeah, I’m a busy dewd. But what I’m saying is, this movie should be preaching to the choir for me. I’m a Pixar lover who plays RPGs. I’m ready for this. I’m ready for CGI Bright. Which is another way of saying, I’m ready for a version of Bright that doesn’t suck.
Tumblr media
So, why haven’t I seen it until now? I mean...COVID-19. This film got FUCKED. But, no matter! It’s on Disney Plus, I’ve got Disney Plus, so let’s get this baby STARTED! Let’s get updated on some Pixar! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Recap (1/2)
OK, immediately digging the soundtrack over the Disney logo as we jump in here! Very ethereal, very fantasy, very LotR, I LIKE it, I LIKE it! And then...long ago, the world was full of wonder!
Tumblr media
We get a view of the world of olde, with magic and many mystical, mythical creatures living together and adventuring. However, as magic wasn’t the easiest thing in the world to use, it eventually gave way to technology, fading away in a world now very similar to ours.
Tumblr media
Basically, it’s about the same as our world, except for a few different races, and the fact that dragons are basically dogs, and unicorns are basically raccoons, which is fuckin’ fantastic.
Tumblr media
We enter the home of teenage elf Ian Lightfoot (Tom Holland) and introverted now-16-year-old who lives with his mother, Laurel (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and his older brother Barley (Chris Pratt). Barley’s a tabletop RPG nerd who’s also a fan of the magical past. Said obsessions cause a strain on his relationship with Ian, and with that of his mother’s boyfriend, centaur policeman Colt Bronco (Mel Rodriguez).
After a discussion about Barley’s recent attempt to protect an old magical monument from destruction, he accidentally damages the sweatshirt that Ian is wearing, which was owned by their late father, Wilder. Ian rushes out, flustered, despite Barley’s attempts to bond with him. Well, looks like we have a sense of the plot for this one.
Tumblr media
On his way to school, Barley stops to get some food when he meets Gaxton (Wilmer Valderrama), an old college friend of his father’s. From Gaxton, he learns things about his father that he never knew, like that he was bold and standout. From there, Barely pledges to try and be more self-confident, like his father.
Whiiiiiiich, doesn’t exactly work once he gets to school. He fails to stand-up to a jerky guy at school, he fails in his driving class, and he fails to ask other high school kids to his birthday party. But to be fair, Barley helps a bit with that last one when he shows up with Guinevere, his busted-ass van with a unicorn painted on the side. Which is supposed to be uncool...but I kinda dig it, not gonna lie.
Tumblr media
After that, Ian completely flubs the invitation bit, confusing the people he was talking to, and disappointing himself in the process. He gets a ride home with Barley, and goes home to talk to a tape recording of his dad. Which is...beautifully sad, and somehow very easy to identify with. So, yeah, it’s gonna be that kind of Pixar movie.
Ian talks to his mom about his father at his age, asking if he was ever unsure. She says yes, but couples this with a surprise: a gift from his late father, who died of a terminal illness shortly after Ian’s birth. The gift is for both Ian and Barley, and was meant to be opened when they were both over 16.
Tumblr media
She gets it from the attic, and they unwrap it, where it’s revealed to be a wizard’s staff. Which is weird, because Wilder was an accountant. In a pocket of the wrapping cloth, there’s a letter written by Wilder with the narration from the beginning of the film (that “Long ago” bit).
Also included is a spell, written by Wilder so that he could see who his sons grew up to be. This “Visitation Spell” would appear to be a way to bring Wilder back for 24 hours. Barley, being the magic-lover that he is, tries multiple times to cast the spell with the staff, but fails to do so, much to his and Ian’s great disappointment.
Tumblr media
However, when Ian tries to read the spell out of curiosity later, the staff begins to react, and the spell begins to work. Barley comes in as this is happening, and the spell works...halfway. It starts to fail, and Barley offers to help, but Ian pulls the staff away, and the spell stops as the Phoenix crystal inside it shatters.
Looks like another bust, but it’s not a complete failure. And if you’ve seen literally any trailer for this movie, you know what happens.
Tumblr media
Although it’s just his legs and feet, it’s still Wilden Lightfoot (Kyle Bornheimer...technically). The boys decide to try and complete the spell, but need another Phoenix Gem to do so. According to Barley’s “historically accurate” TTRPG, Quests of Lore, they will be able to find one by accepting a quest from the place where all quests start: the Manticore’s Tavern. And so, the quest begins!
The brothers and their half-dad board Guinevere and drive to the Manticore’s Tavern. On the way, Barley convinces Ian to practice some spells from the games rulebook, but they don’t work because Ian’s not invoking his passion (or his “heart’s fire”, as Barley calls it). Meanwhile, Laurel figures out where they’re headed, but doesn’t know exactly why...yet.
Tumblr media
After the journey, they make it to the Manticore’s Tavern, which is now essentially a themed Chuck E. Cheese’s restaurant, owned and managed by Corey (Octavia Spencer), a very overworked manticore. Which is pretty great, not gonna lie.
They try to get the actual map to the Phoenix’s Gem from her in order to conjure their Dad, but she no longer sends adventurers on dangerous quests, mostly because she doesn’t want to get sued by any injured adventurers. When Ian argues with her about this, she IMMEDIATELY DIVES INTO AN EXISTENTIAL CRISIS/MID LIFE CRISIS!
Tumblr media
It’s, uh...it’s kind of amazing. Having completely lost it at this point, she basically tears down the entire building with her bare hands and fire-breath. Unfortunately, the map to the Phoenix Gem is burnt in the process of Corey’s literal meltdown. However, as Wilden’s about to be crushed by a couple of falling beams, Ian taps into his heart’s fire.
Tumblr media
Nice. They get out of there, and head out for the Gem, using a child’s placemat replica of the real map to make their way to a place called Raven’s Point. However, rather than just follow the goddamn map, Barley decides to go on much more dangerous road known as the “Path of Peril”, once again following the “call of adventure” and his gut.
Which...yeah, Barley’s not really considering the reality of this whole situation, which fits his personality. He’s a dreamer, despite the rational and reasonable solution in front of him. And, in case you weren’t sure, I’m pretty sure that isn’t a good thing.
Tumblr media
Ian points out the correct point that what actually matters is that they send enough time with their father, and they do indeed take the straightforward path. Good! Barley listened to Ian’s suggestion after all. However, they hit another snag when the car breaks down, completely out of gas. Problem.
Meanwhile, Laurel makes her way to the Manticore’s place, only to find it on fire! She meets Corey, who tells her that she’s met her boys, and told them about everything...except the curse. Also, there’s a curse. Laurel, who is the best movie Mom ever, tricks a policeman interviewing Corey to diverting his attention away from her, and smuggles her into her car to help find (and maybe rescue) her sons.
Tumblr media
Stuck off the freeway without gas, a desperate Ian asks Barley if there are any spells that can get them more gas. They concoct a plan involving a shrinking and growing spell, but that immediately goes wrong as Barley tries to instruct Ian, only frustrating him further, and causing him to fumble the spell and hit Barley with it, making him tiny.
They decide to head to a gas station, where a group of pixie bikers has just arrived. This backfires when Barley, lacking basically any common sense, ends up insulting the biker leader, Dewdrop (Grey Griffin) and her ancestors. Nice one, Barley. As they escape from the pissed off pixies, the tiny Barley is unable to drive, forcing the driver’s anxiety-riddled Ian to drive, overcoming his fears from earlier by force, being chased by the pixies all the way. It’s a pretty good sequence, to be honest.
youtube
Well, they escape the Pixies...but not the cops. And I think that’ll be a good place to pick up in the next part! See you there!

Kyle rayner?
Fave thing about him: the art! He makes constructs that are really fun to look at (yes im shallow yes you can judge me)
Least favorite: he’s in love with the idea of being In Love a lot of the time, aka: the boy is a romantic idiot and it drives me nuts
Favorite line:
Tumblr media
[image desc: two panels of Connor Hawke and Kyle Rayner speaking to each other. In the first, Connor says, “I’m confused, Kyle. Tell me what again the purpose of these presents is supposed to be?” And Kyle responds, “It’s—so—to—to, you know… like, the friends thing, ‘cause we’re pals, uh—it’s to let you know that I was, like, thinking about you, you know?”
In the second, Connor says, “Why not just say so? To me and to the rest of the JLA. Instead of buying us gifts, just take us each aside one by one and tell us you appreciate out friendship,” while Kyle looks down awkwardly.]
(You might be able to guess my otp for him?)
Brotp: him and guy!
Otp: connorkyle
Notp: Uh… I dunno? I’m not so big a fan of him and Jason as I used to be, but it’s not like I’m against it? Yeah, I got nothing
Random hc: he drinks paint water on the regular, but refuses to eat poppyseed bagels. or everything bagels. or bagels at all.
Unpopular opinion: man, I don’t even know what the popular ones are… uh… oh! I like the crab mask! I think it’s neat! It has character!!!!
Song: the cosmos by porches, a vibe for the lanterns in general tbh
Fave pic:
Tumblr media
[image desc: Kyle with an apple on his head, looking kind of super fucking nervous. The narration reads: you ever have one of those friends with the uncanny ability to talk you into anything?]
He looks ugly in it, but it’s funny enough that it doesn’t matter

may i say that to me it seems that Villanelle, Cersei and Killmonger has a big fanbase? when BP went out, everybody talked about Killmonger and T'challa was completely forgotten. Cersei is so popular that D&D made her the Perfect Mother TM at the end of GOT. Villanelle seems to have an huge fanbase too. and Disney villains are plenty of merchandising too.
Yeah many of them have hardcore followings, but I just want them to have like. Balls to the wall stans lmao. Like remember when some R***o wrote that 15 page meta about how the throne room scene in TLJ was representative of Kyle impregnating Rey’s womb? I just want to see galaxy brain essays of that caliber about how like Cersei ordered Lady’s execution because she anticipated Lady going feral and wanted to become Sansa’s adoptive mom. Or like Ursula stole Ariel’s voice because she’d been brainwashed by Flotsam and Jetsam and she tried to coerce Eric into marrying her because she really wanted to bring peace and prosperity to his kingdom. Like, I know that sounds nonsensical, but that’s how pro Snape/Kyle/whatever metas sound to me in the same world where people genuinely think that Cersei was imagining Robert and Jaime’s abuse because she’s an unreliable narrator.
In all seriousness, I do get what you’re saying, but I also feel like Villanelle, Cersei, Killmonger etc are the exception to the rule. There is a huge tendency for fandoms and/or narratives to give the benefit of the doubt to the greaseboy villains and condemn everyone else as irredeemable. I always like using Azula/Cersei as examples: they’re the sisters in a pair of siblings who start off as villains, but Zuko/Jaime are the ones who get redeemed while the sisters go into a downward spiral. I’ve praised Zuko’s arc before, and Jaime has one of my favorite (if not my Favorite) ASOIAF arcs of all time, but I still can’t help but notice the double standard there. If the greaseboy serial killers, abusers, and fascists can be stanned and redeemed, then I want to see that for the marginalized villains too. I don’t think anyone should excuse any villain’s evil actions, but I feel like the marginalized villains don’t get as much of a chance to be redeemed, nor are people automatically convinced of their inherent goodness as they are with the greaseboys. Hope that makes more sense!

THE THIRD WHEEL CHAPTER 4: Wilting Away
Tumblr media
Previous Chapter: In My Heart
Next Chapter: More Coming Soon!
Disclaimer:  This story is based from a lot of animes, such as Your Lie in April and Waiting in the Summer. All rights belong to their manga writers and anime adapters.
Author’s Note: If the “Keep reading” doesn’t work, go here for the full post. Since my brother’s drawing monitor is being borrowed by his friend, there won’t be any chapter artworks until some time around March. Italicized narration is told by one of the protagonists, Kyle Collins. And lastly, to pay respects to non-American sports fans, I’m going to call it “football”, not “soccer”.

I stand in silence as I watch a girl run across the park, followed by the colors that once brightened my world. My life has returned to a black and white state. It all happened so quickly that I was left stunned for who knows how long.
It all started back when I asked Vivian to hang out with me yesterday...
Recommended Music:  Your Lie in April (YLiA)
Within the halls of Skylia High school, Kyle takes a deep breath and, with confidence, he asks the important question to Vivian.
Kyle: Would you like to go out on a date with me this weekend?
Those very words struck the redhead like Cupid’s arrow as she is left stunned.
Vivian: Wha... WHAT?!
Vivian shakes her head and composes herself.
Vivian: Date?! As in like a... a...
Kyle, realizing the situation, explains himself.
Kyle: Oh! No, I didn’t mean it romantically. I mean...
The boy glances away and rubs the back of his head.
Kyle: ...I was thinking... more of a Friends’ Day Out... Just the two of us.Or we could ask some other friends to come.
Vivian breathes a sigh of relief and giggles.
Vivian: You could’ve just said that earlier.
Kyle chuckles shyly.
Kyle: Heh... well, Karen and Sam were planning on asking you to hang out with me instead.
Vivian: Either way, the answer is still “Yes”.
The brunet boy looks at the redhead with wide eyes.
Kyle: Really?
Vivian nods with a smile.
Vivian: Mhm. And also, let’s invite Karen, Sam and the others as well.
Kyle grins in excitement.
Kyle: Great! Tomorrow then, at 10 am, in Aryndelle Park.
Vivian: Sure thing.
Everything was set. Vivian said, “Yes”, and I was bursting with joy inside. I’ve never been this happy in such a long time.
The two friends wave goodbye at each other before going to their respective clubs. It is clear in their faces; they’re very excited for the next day.
Recommended Music: Summer Sunshine (YLiA)
Saturday comes and after breakfast and a shower, Kyle quickly goes through his closet to pick the clothes he is going to wear. Karen hangs around near his bedroom door, not looking at her brother to give him some privacy, and chuckles.
Karen: Man, someone’s pretty joyful today.
Kyle smiles.
Kyle: What can I say, Sis? I kinda like Vivian.
Karen sighs in happiness.
Karen: I’m glad.
Soon after, Kyle is all set. He is wearing a red flannel, with an obsidian t-shirt underneath that has a Brachydios design on it. He’s also wearing jeans, black & red shoes, and a key necklace from one of his favorite animes, Attack on Titan. He looks at the mirror as he fixes his hair.
This outfit has always been my favorite and signature. My flannel and t-shirt were given to me by my mom and dad, respectively. They’re gifts for me during my and Karen’s birthday. She got an Espeon jacket and an Absol t-shirt. Lucas, on the other hand, gave each of us a necklace; Eren’s key necklace from Attack on Titan for me and a Ladybug necklace from Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir for Karen. These gifts hold a special place in our hearts. They’re my favorite because I can feel my family’s warm and loving presence around me, even when I’m alone.
Kyle: How do I look?
Karen looks over at him and grins.
Karen: Perfect for her.
The boy makes eye contact with his sister through the mirror and grins back.
Kyle: Thanks.
The twins face each other.
Karen: All set?
Kyle: Yes!
Karen: Then let’s go.
Lucas picks the twins up and takes them to the park. As the two step out of the car, they are greeted by their friends in a gazebo.
Sam: Karen! Kyle! Over here!
Mark: Hey, you two!
Danny: We got some games here!
Elizabeth: And some food!
Ariya: Come on!
The twins grin at each other before turning to Lucas.
Kyle: See you in three hours, Lucas.
Karen: Later, Big Bro.
Lucas: You two, have fun now.
As Kyle and Karen close the car doors and rush to their friends, Lucas looks at them proudly.
Lucas: Are you seeing this, Mom and Dad? I hope you are.
Lucas smiles before driving off. The twins meet with their friends, who are sitting on two benches with a picnic table set up. Sam, Mark and Danny are seated on one bench while Elizabeth and Ariya are seated on the other.
Kyle: What are you guys playing?
Sam: Your favorite, buddy.
Kyle: Monster Hunter, of course.
Kyle pulls out his Nintendo Switch from his bag and boots it on. He sits with Ariya and joins the four-player squad formed by her, Sam and Mark.
Mark: What’s our quest?
Ariya: Bloodbath Diablos.
Kyle: You have enough permits?
Sam: I do.
These three great people are just the best teammates you can ask for. Our synced minds and teamwork is so great that we barely speak strategies at all in the middle of an intense battle. When one of us struggles, the rest just know what to do. The Bloodbath Diablos may be one of the most difficult Monsters in the game we’re playing, but we can handle it. It took some time but this is finally the first time that we beat it without one of us losing a life in the game.
In the game, the Bloodbath Diablos finally succumbs to its wounds and the words “Quest Clear” is shown on the screens of each of the gamers’ Switches. At the sight of those words, they cheer.
Kyle: Yes!
Ariya: Finally!
Mark: WOOHOO!!
Sam: THERE IS A GOD!!
Kyle chuckles at Sam’s comment.
Kyle: Is that your catchphrase?
Sam: Shut up. I’m celebrating.
As the gamers share laughs and high-fives, Karen and Elizabeth are by the picnic table getting everything ready.
Karen: Make sure to prepare eight plates.
Elizabeth: How come? There’s only seven of us.
Karen: Oh, Vivian will be joining us.
Elizabeth heart sinks as she realizes that Kyle and Vivian might spend more time together. Her kind nature prevents her from causing any conflicts just to be with the boy she likes, so she just goes with it and nods at Karen.
After another quest, the gamers join the two girls. Just then, a voice calls out to them.
Voice: HEY, GUYS!!
They all turn to the source and spot Vivian running up to them. She was wearing  a white T shirt with a star design on it, blue jeans, a star pendant and black sandals. Kyle smiles at the sight of her and runs towards her. While the others smile at Kyle’s happiness, Elizabeth does not. Kyle and Vivian meet at the entrance of the gazebo.
Kyle: You’re here.
Vivian: Yeah. Sorry I’m late.
Vivian laughs and rubs the back of her head shyly. Kyle laughs with her.
Kyle: It’s alright. What matters is that you’re here.
That’s right. Time doesn’t matter. As long as she’s here, nothing matters but her.
The redhead blushes and joins the rest of the group with the brunet boy.
Karen: Hey, Vi!
Sam: Sup!
The rest of the group introduce themselves to Vivian, but as the redhead reaches Elizabeth, the latter just says “Hi” without even making eye contact or sharing a handshake. The black-haired girl continues preparing everyone’s picnic meal. Vivian is left stun but her attention is quickly grabbed by Kyle.
Kyle: Hey, Vivian. Check this out.
The girl approaches the boy as he happily shares what he is playing to her.
Vivian: Oh, Monster Hunter! I’ve seen this before.
Kyle: Really?
Vivian: Yeah, back when...
Recommended Music: Mother’s Dream (YLiA)
A painful memory suddenly flashes in Vivian’s mind as she immediately stops talking. Kyle tilts his head.
Kyle: Back when... what?
Vivian shakes her head and immediately goes to Karen and Elizabeth at the picnic table.
Vivian: I’m sorry...
Kyle: Vivian...
Karen waves at the group.
Karen: Hey, food’s ready!
The gamers, except for Kyle, excitedly rush to the table. The brunet boy just walks towards the table and quickly sits next to Vivian. The redhead is almost in the verge of tears as she tries to hide it from everyone, but Kyle takes notice.
Something must have happened to her before. She couldn’t have this kind of sudden breakdown. Someone from her past must’ve done something, related to the very game I play, that broke her.
Kyle places a hand on Vivian’s shoulder and whispers.
Kyle: I’m sorry. If you don’t want to talk about it, it’s alright. Whatever you’re going through, don’t let it break you. You release the pain, not hide it.
The redhead nods at the boy while wiping her would-be tears. Kyle gently wraps his arms around her as she leans her head on his shoulder. Nobody else seems to notice what the two are doing as they are too busy grabbing their meals.
Recommended Music: Will You be Able to Forget? (YLiA)
As Vivian regains her smile, she thanks Kyle and the two eat with the rest of the group. Lots of laughs were shared. Everyone had a great time.
Even Elizabeth tried her best to enjoy her time. She turns to Vivian beside her.
Elizabeth: Hey, Vi.
Vivian: Yes?
Elizabeth: I just wanna apologize for my behavior earlier. That was so unlike me.
Vivian smiles and pats Elizabeth on her shoulder.
Vivian: It’s alright. I don’t mean to offend you if there’s something I did.
Elizabeth: Oh no, you didn’t. There are some things that are just out of our control.
The redhead nods and the two shake each other’s hands with smiles.
Elizabeth: Nice to meet you, Vi.
Vivian: Nice to meet you, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth: Call me, Eli.
Vivian: Okay, Eli.
The two girls grin at each other before continuing their meal. Elizabeth finally manages to feel a lot better after having a nice chat with Vivian.
After the picnic, Ariya opens her bag and grabs a volleyball inside it.
Ariya: Hey, how about a match?
The sports boys quickly smile.
Mark: Yes!
Sam: I’m in!
Danny: Same!
Ariya then smirks.
Ariya: Let’s make this interesting; Boys VS Girls. Loser has to clean up the table and everything on it.
Kyle: Uhh.... I don’t think that’s a good idea. We’re all involved in this picnic. I think it would be the responsible thing to clean up our own me--
Everyone else: DEAL!
Kyle just sighs and facepalms.
Nitwits. I’m friends with a bunch of nitwits. But I admit, that I do love them all so much.
The group then heads to a nearby volleyball field and the teams go to their respective sides. Sam flips a coin to see who goes first. The coin lands on his palm.
Sam: Heads! Girls go first.
Ariya: Oof! Prepare to get rekt by my serve!
Recommended Music: Above (Haikyuu!!)
Ariya stands outside the border of the girl’s field and bounces the ball, preparing herself.
Mark: Bring it!
Danny: I don’t think it’s a good idea asking the volleyball expert here to “Bring it”...
Sam: .....Well shi--
Karen: LANGUAGE!
Ariya smirks as she tosses the ball upwards and starts sprinting. The ball begins to drop and the sports girl leaps before delivering a strong serve towards the boy’s field. The ball zooms towards Kyle, who barely reacts as he tries to receive it. But the ball just bounces off of his arms and out of the border.
Ariya: BOOM! SERVICE ACE!!
Elizabeth: Point for the Girls!
Vivian: Get Yeeted on!
Kyle huffs and yells at Ariya.
Kyle: That’s not fair! I’m the weakest link of the team just cuz I don’t do sports like you!
Ariya sticks her tongue out to the boys and the rest of them huff along with Kyle. Sam turns to his teammates with a grin on his face.
Sam: I got an idea.
The boys huddle up while Ariya retrieves the ball. She prepares for another serve and the boys just finished their planning.
Ariya: Get ready!
Kyle: Bring it!
Ariya chuckles before delivering another serve towards Kyle. This time, the brunet boy straightens his arms and receives the ball. However, the ball’s rebound trajectory is going towards the back of the court rather than towards the net. The girls celebrate.
Karen: Haha! Another point for us!
Kyle grins as the girls notice someone behind him. Their eyes widen.
Elizabeth: Wait, is that...?
Vivian: What’s Mark doing?!
Mark dashes behind Kyle and tries to catch up with the loose ball before it hits the ground. Meanwhile, Sam is running towards the net, preparing to leap for a spike.
Ariya: Crap! It’s their Back & Forth strategy!
Elizabeth: Their what?!
Karen: It’s one of Sam and Mark’s strategies. When Mark successfully blocks a ball from entering their goal, Sam quickly runs to the enemy goal. Then Mark, in return, quickly brings the ball to Sam by either a fast throw or a fast pass between their teammates. It’s a way for them to quickly counter attacks from their opponents!
Vivian: And they’re doing it here too?!
Sam: That’s right!
The girls turn to Sam who is already in the air, doing a spike form. Ariya and Karen runs to the net and jump up, in front of Sam, with an attempt to block his attack. But the blond boy smirks and looks to the side. All of the girls then look to where his sights are and see Danny, also in the air, preparing to spike.
Elizabeth: It’s a trap!
Danny grins as Mark does a quick long toss. The ball travels from the back of the court to the net, in front of Danny, in a matter of a few seconds. Danny swings his arm and spikes the ball as it lands... OUTSIDE the court accidentally. A point for the.... girls...?!
Everyone: .....
Ah, yes. Of course, this happens. Such an epic build up.... only to fall apart instantly. Like I said, lovable nitwits.
Sam: DANNY!!
Danny: Sorry! My hands were probably a bit greasy because of the picnic food!
Karen celebrates.
Karen: HAHA! SABOTAGE!! I knew the fried chicken has its uses!
Sam drops to his knees and shouts to the sky.
Sam: NOO!! GOD HAS FORSAKEN US!!!
Elizabeth: What is it with you and your fascination with God?!
Kyle, Karen and Vivian smile shyly.
Vivian: Must be a hardcore Christian?
Kyle: He’s not.
The friends share a few laughs before starting the next rally. Ariya takes the ball again and prepares to serve.
Ariya: Time for a third ace, girls!
Girls: Yeah!
Sam: Let’s try again and make it in this time!
Boys: Roger!
Ariya tosses the ball upwards and serves towards Kyle again. But this time, Kyle receives it more properly, as it arcs to the side instead of the back. Mark follows the ball while Sam and Danny rush to the net at both sides, getting ready to spike. However, the girls splits into pairs, with each pair getting ready to block the each boy.
Karen: You’re not getting a point, Sam!
Sam grins.
Sam: That’s what you think!
Ariya turns to Elizabeth and Vivian, who are readying to block Danny.
Ariya: It’s going for Danny!
Elizabeth: Got it!
Vivian: Okay!
As Danny jumps, so does the girls but in the next few seconds, they don’t see the ball on him. Ariya notices this and freaks out.
Ariya: But then... where...?!
She widens her eyes as she spots Kyle running at the middle of the court and towards the net. Ariya quickly lands on the ground and tries to block Kyle. But this fails as Mark quickly tosses the ball to the top of the net where Kyle just taps it into the girl’s side. The ball hits the ground and it’s a point for the boys.
Boys: YEAH!!
The boys share high-fives and fist-bumps while they celebrate. The girls stare at them, dumbfounded, but immediately smile in amazement.
Ariya: Okay, I gotta admit; that was baiting in a WHOLE other level.
Karen: Nice job, little Bro!
Kyle: Thanks!
The game continued for a few minutes until it’s neck-and-neck with 23-24 in the girls’ favor. One more point and the boys will have to clean the picnic table.
Ariya: Come on, girls. One more point and we win!
Girls: Yeah!
Sam: Bring it back to them at all costs!
Boys: Roger!
Ariya tosses the ball but instead of doing a hard serve, she goes for a jump float serve. The boys are shocked by this as they witness the ball hovering in the air, making its way to their court slowly. Sam turns to Kyle.
Sam: Kyle, make the toss! We’ll spike it down.
Kyle: Got it!
Kyle observes the ball’s trajectory and intercepts its landing point. He raises his hands and quickly tosses the ball to the other boys who are already running up to jump. The girls scatter to try and block them.
Ariya: Elizabeth, stay in the back, just in case they try something tricky.
Elizabeth: Roger!
As the girls leap at the same time as the boys, Kyle tosses the ball to Sam. Ariya is in front of the latter.
Ariya: I got you!
Sam: No, you don’t!
Sam goes for a hard swing, but at the last second, he taps the ball gently upwards.
Karen: It’s a feint!
The ball does a small arc above Ariya and quickly falls directly behind her. Elizabeth runs and dives to receive the ball but she is too late. The ball hits the ground as the girl skids on it. It’s a point for the boys and they celebrate.
Boys: YEAH!!
Ariya: Wait!
Recommended Music: Breakdown (Haikyuu!!)
The boys look and are stunned when they see Ariya, Karen and Vivian gathered around Elizabeth as she is clutching her knee. She apparently skinned it while trying to recover the ball. The boys quickly rush to help the girls.
Sam: Danny, there’s a first-aid kit in my bag!
Danny: Okay!
Danny rushes back to the gazebo and grabs the first-aid kit. He then crouches down in front of Elizabeth.
Danny: Alright, Eli. This is gonna sti--
Kyle: Danny, let me.
The first year looks at the brunet third year and nods. Kyle takes the kit and tends to Elizabeth’s wound.
Kyle: Don’t worry, Eli. I got you.
Elizabeth winces for a bit but since Kyle is tending to her, he feelings for him mitigate the pain. Soon after, Kyle gently places a bandage on the wound.
Kyle: There. Better?
Elizabeth weakly smiles and nods. Kyle smiles back at her while everyone else breathes out a sigh of relief.
Karen: That really shocked us.
Vivian: Glad you’re okay, Eli.
Mark: So.... is the game finished then?
Ariya: Yeah, I guess so. Kyle’s right. We have to handle our own responsibilities.
Kyle: Oh, so now you listen to me?!
Kyle glares at his friends and they all just chuckle at his annoyance.
Gosh, I love these nitwits.
Ariya crouches near Elizabeth.
Ariya: Come on, I’ll carry you.
Elizabeth nods and is lifted on the sports girl’s back.
Elizabeth: Thanks, Ari.
Ariya: Not a prob, honey.
Elizabeth smiles and relaxes her head on Ariya’s shoulder. Soon after, everyone gathers back in the gazebo. Karen and Sam clean up the picnic table while Mark and Sam pack up the table itself. Ariya and Elizabeth have a fun conversation together. Lastly, Kyle and Vivian are in a flower garden next to the gazebo.
Kyle: So, what do you think of today?
Vivian: Despite Eli’s accident, it was great.
Vivian looks straight into Kyle’s brown eyes and smiles.
Vivian: Thanks, Kyle. I really needed this. I’ve never had this much fun in my life.
Kyle: You’re welcome, Vi.
The redhead giggles at the nickname the brunet boy gave to her. Kyle looks at her for a moment and is in deep thought.
I have to do it. I’m sure of it now. I’m going to confess to her.
Kyle: Vivian, listen...
Vivian: Yes, Kyle?
Kyle takes a deep breath before plucking a rose and presenting it to Vivian.
Kyle: I like you.
The redhead is taken back by those words. Another memory flashes into her mind; one that will always haunt her for the rest of her life. She quickly shakes her head.
Vivian: Kyle... I...
Kyle lowers his arm and concerns himself over Vivian’s sad expression.
Kyle: I’m sorry... was I rushing...?
Vivian: No, it’s not that... it’s just... I’m not ready for another relationship right now... not again...
Kyle: “Again”...?
Vivian turns away from Kyle.
Vivian: I’m sorry, Kyle... but this is not just for my sake.... it’s for yours as well....
The redhead quickly runs away from the brunet boy without even uttering goodbye to him. Kyle is left stunned as he witnesses Vivian and maybe his happiness running away from him.
And just like that. My heart and mind are in pieces. She is gone, and so are the wonderful colors that she brought with her to my life. I take a glance at the rose in my hand. Even though it still as beautiful as Vivian, in my eyes...
It’s wilting away...

Of course with reminders of his parents constantly surrounding him, it makes it hard to really move on.
Oh! Um, hi! My name is Patton Sanders, nice to meet you! Um, I’m 20, a veterinarian, and well, I’m an orphan. I have three little brothers named Virgil, Logan, and Roman! They are so super awesome! Virgil is the sporty guy at his high school, he’s 17 and the captain of like, all of the schools’ sport teams! Logan is my little genius! He’s only 14, but he’s a whole two years ahead and in high school with Virge! Roman is my theatre kiddo, he’s in every arts program at his school and knows how to play just about every instrument at only 9!!! Now, as for me, I’m nothing special, I just try really really hard, so my brothers are safe. I triple timed high school and college so that by the time I turned 18 I had my degree in veterinary medicine. Logan claims I pulled an Aaron Burr by doing this, which I don’t fully understand, but I assume it’s a cool thing. I only did what I had to though, we were already orphaned by the time I started high school, which meant we had no money for college. My high school said that it would pay all my college expenses if I followed the guidelines set, and so I super dashed through school. I managed to ace just about all my classes with some help from my friends and siblings. But that isn’t what this is about. I’m not the focus in this story, I’m just the narrator and eyes. This is a story about 4 kids forced to grow up far too fast. This is a story of the children of the most amazing people. Because when it comes down to it, we’re broken minds, struggling to put ourselves back together.
Now, to start, we have to explain what happened first. Our parents, Thomas and Val Sanders were out at a college play that a friend of theirs was a part of. Unfortunately, they never made it out alive. One of the people attending the play started a shoot-out with about 5 others helping him. Nearly the whole auditorium was killed. Including them.
We had no living next of kin, so a family friend took us in for a short while before dropping us all off at the orphanage. I will never forget that day. I remember them letting us grab our important things from our old house. I remember crying while holding all my siblings close. I remember having to be dragged out of my home. I remember the looks of pure pity from the orphanage staff. I remember them trying to separate me from my brothers. I remember almost punching them. I remember the name of the staff member who was the only one to understand and let us stay together, his name was Terrance. I remember hugging him before we were ushered off. I remember the confusion from Roman when we told him we weren’t going home. I remember Virgil carrying him around telling him that this was home now, with faux excitement and a plastic smile. I remember Roman thinking mom and dad were still coming back, and none of us having the heart to tell him otherwise. I remember Logan not speaking at all for the next month. But most of all, I remember the broken parts that got littered everywhere we went.
I was 15. Roman was only 4. We were broken beyond repair. At least, I thought we were. I thought for sure that we were going to go straight from the orphanage to the homeless shelter. But I did it. I managed to do something, and it changed our lives forever.
The day before I turned 18, I went through with my plan. I have friends named Joan and Talyn who already had a house due to Talyn’s parents having money to spare. They let us stay with them for as long as we needed. We brought all of our things over and we explained the rules of this new situation. My bros were quick to follow instruction. The next day we officially moved out of the horrible child prison we were owned by. I was already well into my job as a vet tech and was able to fully become a veterinarian the next month due to my boss seeing that I was at least twice as competent as the resident vets. And so, it began.
It was bittersweet when we got our own place, as Joan and Talyn had grown to adore my little brothers in the short year we lived there. But I had finally earned enough money to rent a house, plus the orphanage contacted me, telling me about a very large inheritance we apparently had, which was somehow enough to buy said house. We ended up moving in and used the money I earned for beds and a couch.
Over the next year we bought more furniture and accessories as we saw fit. At the present moment, my room is bright blue with animal posters and pop culture references sprawled about randomly. Logan and Roman’s room is split in half. One side is meticulous with dark blue and black walls and a few nerdy posters, mostly of doctor who and Sherlock Holmes. The other however, was messy as all get out, had musical posters everywhere and usually had the mess all the way up to the metaphorical line. Logan never complained unless Roman’s things crossed it. Now Virgil confused me. I was planning on him sharing a room with me, but he refused, claiming that I needed privacy and rest since I was working full time and he wasn’t. All he wanted was a couch, some bedding, music, and some makeup. Because I’m a stubborn mule, whenever he lets me buy him things, I buy him the most bestest makeup and all his favorite albums, as well as some of the best headphones sold. He gets mad at me, but he deserves the world and more.
Okay, now we’re in the present! So, I might as well start the actual story now. Ok well then. Its Friday morning, today the big game at the high school is happening, which means Virgil has to leave early for practice. By early, I mean about the time that I leave for work which is 6 am.
I get up and make food like I normally do, only doubled because Lo and Virge usually sleep for another half an hour. Ro always gets up with me because I’m his ride to school. Virgil has a motorcycle that he drives himself and Logan to school on. I start up some friendly conversation as we eat, Virgil still groggy from sleep.
“are you ready for the game today? Isn’t it against the school rivals? I hope you guys beat them again, but I’m sure you will with such a good captain!!!” I wink at him as he chuckles.
“yeah, we’ve got this, if anything, I’ve got this, and that’s really the point. Yeah, it’s our rivals, the panthers, today. Not that they’ve ever been a challenge. We’ve swept the floor with them for countless years. And thanks for the poorly concealed compliment. Do we have anymore coffee?” he rambles off answers to my questions.
“yeah, but I don’t get paid til tomorrow and there’s only a cup worth left. Proceed at your own risk.” As soon as I say it, Logan zooms to the coffee and brews it for himself, cackling maniacally (giggling cutely).
“HAHAH!!! You will never get a drop of the saccharine nectar!!! Tis mine, forever and always!” he brushes his hair back with his hand and smiles at us. Roman beams and stands up in a fighting stance.
“thou shalt not loot this poor pauper of his deserved libation!!! Come at me thy villainous fiend!” and quickly the two start playing mock sword fighting. Me and Virgil laugh as Logan gets vanquished and the cup of coffee gets given to V. Logan ends up stealing some still, to my amusement.
We end up splitting up as the kiddos go to school and I head to work. I walk in, put on my coat, and then the place blows up. There is a half dead dog on my table and another 2 that are at least stable waiting. I’m apparently the only actual vet that showed up today. Great. Today’s gonna be fun.
I’m not gonna go into what happened at work, because honestly, not much happened. It was an average day at work, but now is time for the interesting part!!! So, the big game at the high school is happening today right? Well, let me talk about it!
So, I go and pick up Roman from school and head over to the high school while asking Ro about his day. He learned a healthy amount of animal and plant biology, so I talk about some of the things he didn’t understand and made a few biology puns which were received quite well luckily! When we get to the school, I call Logan to figure out where he had stationed himself. We meet up and find a nice spot on the bleachers. Not long after, the teams came out and started playing. Virgil is easy to spot, not to mention the announcers are constantly shouting about him as he keeps running the ball the furthest of either team. The game is pretty average for the most part, up until the very end. Virge takes the win but not a second after, he gets tackled full force to the ground. I stand up and look over the crowd as I see him up again, shoving the other guy away. The guy gets up close to his face and I think Virgil is going to punch him-oh god please don’t punch him. The guy gets dragged away by the referee and Virgil has a bunch of teammates coming to check on him and I feel much less on edge. I shouldn’t though. As soon as I think it’s done the announcers go quiet and the stands go crazy as Virgil uppercuts the guy and then knees him in the stomach.
“what just happened there?! Kyle, why did Sanders just risk his high school career like that?!”
“Fitton insulted sanders’ younger brother.” Oh. Oh no. Oh HELL NO! Logan stands up and looks in the direction of the guy and visibly shudders. Oh, he’s lucky that V got to him first. Oh, I might be going to jail guys! The rest of this story might be told from prison!
“Logan, do you know that guy?” I ask calmly. He looks at me before turning away.
“um, yeah. He uh, he’s an ex of mine…” I tense up. He’s never told me about him having been in a relationship! He tells me everything! Ugh, that’s not important right now…
“is he a freshman? I haven’t seen him on the team before.” Lo nods.
“yeah, we met at the local library. I didn’t tell you cuz I didn’t think you’d want me to date someone and um, never mind… Anyways, we broke up cuz he was trying to pressure me into doing um, bad things.” I twitch. Oh, I might kill him. I shake my head and take Roman’s hand and start walking down towards the team to pick up Virgil. We get down there and I check up on Virgil, checking for medical issues; he very well could have gotten another concussion. I get distracted when Virgil hisses at something behind me.
“oh, calm down parselhead. I wasn’t even coming over here for you” I hear in a low drawl behind me. “how’s it hanging bookie?”
“first off, I’ve told you what that actually means and that that nickname bothers me, please cease this instant, and second, I’m doing fine how are you Loki?” I hear Logan say calmly.  I tense slightly and turn around with an angry look on my face.
“Logan you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. I know for certain I wouldn’t if I were you.” Logan looks at me but shakes his head.
“I can converse with an ex and still be civil about it Pat. It’s no problem.” he smiles softly at me, but I can’t help the anger that swells in my chest seeing the huge smirk that this guy is wearing.
“yeah Patton we can be civil here, no need for this hostility. Anyways, I’m doing fantastic Logan! Thank you for asking! I even have a new boyfriend, one who doesn’t try to keep me a secret.” His voice is contradictory to his words.
“it was two years ago, and I was twelve and still in an orphanage, I didn’t need my older brother worrying about me anymore than he already did. Plus, I barely understood my emotions, how do you think I would deal with my brothers’?” Logan crosses his arms and looks up at him accusingly.
“I dunno, I sorta thought you were enjoying the relationship, but you just ended it for no reason, citing your brother as too intimidating to cross, and neither of them look that scary to me.” He says and I look over to Logan in confusion. He walks closer to him and starts talking again, harsher than before.
“you and I both know that wasn’t what happened. You got pissed off that I didn’t want to go smoke and bang you arrogant prick. Also, I’d watch what you say about my brothers if I were you.” He just smirks while he backs away.
“okay then, I see I’m no longer wanted here. See you round bookie.” He walks away, and Logan shakes his head and face palms.
“every fricking time… I try to be civil but he always… ugh never mind it doesn’t matter. V are you okay? I don’t know what Loki said, but I can almost guarantee it was a lie. Also, he has a ridiculously hard skull, don’t ask how I know that, are you bleeding? Concussed?” Logan looks up at Virgil with a worried smile.
“yeah, I’m sure it was a lie, didn’t make it any less enraging. And no, I’m not bleeding or concussed. You dated him? How?! He’s such a prick!!!” Logan laughs.
“I don’t know, he was interesting. He told good stories and listened to me when I needed to vent. He’s also an incredibly good pillow. Really, he was just, the person I needed at the time, I guess.” He shrugs. Virgil is still watching him leave with an angry glare fixed on his face. I decide to change the topic.
“hey guys, you want pizza for dinner tonight? Food for champions!” the other three smile and cheer. V changes out and we head home, and I hand make three pizzas from scratch the way that we usually like it. Dad loved pizza and he said my pizza was the best, so I usually make it for celebrations or as a pick-me-up. It seems like its serving as both tonight. While its baking I make a couple of announcements.
“okay, so I’m going shopping tomorrow morning, but when I’m done with that, I thought we’d go visit Joan and Talyn? They have some presents for you all.” All three of them look up from what they were doing with wide eyes and smiles.
“YEEEEESSS!!! JOAN AND TALYN ARE SUPER AWESOMAZINGSAUCE YAAAAAAYYY!!!” Roman screams. I giggle as Roman jumps around and hugs me. Logan laughs along with me as he pulls Roman away.
“calm down Ro, Pat is cooking, you can’t be that close to the hot oven. I’m excited too, yes Ro.” Virgil looks at me questioningly.
“why do they always get us gifts? It seems like every time we see them, they have stacks of presents for us.” I shrug.
“well, I sort of introduced my lifelong friends to my 7, 12, and 15-year-old brothers who were sort of helpless at the time. They like me, but they adore you guys. Some kind of cool grandparent syndrome I guess.” Virgil laughs loudly at this as the pizzas beep. I pull them out to cool and tell some more puns to pass the time. The evening goes on without a hitch, we play a round of word association games as we eat our pizza. I pack up the leftovers in lunch bags for the 4 of us and then clean up the kitchen. As I finish with that, Roman shouts for me to tell him a story.
I tell a story of a brave prince who has to protect his kingdom from a fierce dragon witch. The dragon witch had stolen away the princes soon to be bride. The prince fought through many trials to save his fiancé, however he was beaten to it by another beautiful princess who had won the maidens heart instead. The prince was of course fair, as the princess had fairly bested him, and so he went on a mission to love himself before he went around looking for a fitting bride-or groom, again. Roman sleepily cheers and snuggles into a black cat plush V gave him.
The most difficult to get to sleep is Logan, who just wants to read all night. He changes to a different book just as I walk over to his desk. “Lo, you need to go to bed. You want to be well rested for tomorrow kiddo. You can read your book tomorrow, I promise the ending won’t change, and it won’t leave without you.” He yawns, he has had a long day.
“if I go to sleep will you sing for me? Please?” he looks at me with puppy dog eyes.
“of course, Lo. Bookmark your page and go get ready for bed and I’ll sing for you.” He smiles and rushes off to get ready. He’s back in a few minutes.
“can you sing dads old lullaby? If not its ok but-” I cut him off.
“of course, I can Lo.”
“somewhere there’s someone who wants you to be
How they want you to be, their opinion
They’ll paint you the colors that they wanna see
And to them, its Monet,
But to you, it’s a gray, silhouette
So, pick up a pencil, a stencil, a crayon,
The picture is not finished yet
You can let someone else tell you your story,
You can let someone else tell you what’s true
Or you can set yourself free,
Climb the tallest highest tree,
Or maybe sit back and take in the view,
You can let yourself, let yourself do
Anything.”
By the time I finish the chorus, Logan is sound asleep, snoring softly and cuddling an owl plush. I get up, tuck him in, turn off the lights, then head into the living room. Virgil is laying on the couch with his headphones on full blast. I grab his sleep meds and a cup of water and hand them over to him.
“hey, you shouldn’t listen to your music that loud, it could damage your hearing. You don’t have to listen to me, but I just wanted to let you know. I worry about you guys, you know?” he smiles and takes the meds. He turns down the volume on his headphones and nods.
“sorry Pat, I didn’t realize they were that loud. And, we worry about you too. You do way more for us than you have to. Anyways, thanks for the meds and sleep well okay? Don’t stay up all night again.” I giggle and nod before giving him a quick hug and going to my room.
I do a few pieces of paperwork that I wasn’t able to do before the end of my shift and send a quick text to my vet tech Elenora, checking in on her, as she’s been off on vacation and she’s supposed to be getting back tomorrow, and she has some things she needs to pick up at the office. She’s also absolutely amazing and sweet and beautiful and I love talking to her so so much. But that’s beside the point. After I get all of that done, I check the time, realizing that its now 11:45 and I should have been in bed an hour ago. I quickly fall asleep soon after luckily.
The next day is super-duper hectic so like, hold onto your horses, this is gonna be a wild ride! Okay okay, so I get up at 8 and go shopping, blah blah, tons of coffee because my boys and I have a problem. I unload everything by 10 which is when the kiddos are waking up. Virgil apologizes for not waking up to help but I wave him off as I start to make a small lunch because three meals a day, but Joan and Talyn are probably going to take us out for lunch knowing them, so I don’t want us to lose our appetite, that’d be rude! Anyways I set out the 4 plates and eat mine before going to take a quick shower. By the time I shower and change, all three of them are conversing around the table. I smile fondly because, hey, I helped raise these fantastic kiddos! LOOK AT MY BROTHERS!!! Okay, I’m good now. I walk up to the table and they all smile happily at me before going back to their debate.
“listen, if you have straight caffeine you die, therefore this stuff is totally deadly and like, we’re slowly killing ourselves by drinking it.” Virgil says, being devil’s advocate per usual.
“well yes but that’s like chlorine and sodium!!! They are both deadly elements on their own, but together give us salt! Not to mention that even too much water can kill a human! And! Another point, coffee is a natural occurrence just like water!!! In reasonable quantities, coffee is perfectly safe!!!” Logan rants passionately making me glad that I invested some money into speech and debate for him. Roman grins.
“but if water, coffee, and salt could kill us, does that mean that the world is trying to kill all life on it?!? are we living on a death rock?!? LOGAN IS THE WORLD GONNA KILL US?!?!” his grin slowly gets sadder and more scared as he continues. Logan flinches slightly.
“I mean, technically humans have been killing the earth for years so I wouldn’t put it out of the question that that is the reason that everything on earth is potentially deadly to humans. That would make sense… gosh darn it why do you always send me into steadily collapsing bouts of existentialism?” Logan shakes his head likely jumping into one of his existential crises.
“do I want to know the opening remarks?” I ask and they all shake their heads no. I grab a mug and make myself some creamer with a hint of coffee. Heheh!!! Caramel coffee is very good, but caramel mint coffee is even better! Roman runs off to get changed right as Logan goes to take a quick shower. V asks to change in my room which I am totally ok with because of course!!!
Oh! I should say what we’re wearing shouldn’t I? okay okay, so I wear my favorite pair of khakis, which are quite worn from wear. I wear a pun-ny shirt about dogs, and a tan cardigan with black white and purple plaid shirt underneath. I also have some nice black boots. When Roman comes out, he’s dressed in a red theatre shirt, white jeans, and a white fluffy coat, with his favorite white fluff boots. Logan comes out with his talk nerdy to me tee, black ripped skinny jeans, a black fluffy jacket, black boots, and a snap back. Virgil ends up wearing his nirvana shirt, black ripped skinny jeans, leather jacket, and black converse.
Logan sneaks up behind Roman and puts one of his Disney caps on him. Roman gasps because Lo never shares his hats. He tries to give it back but Lo tells him not to. “I got that one just for you Ro, keep it.” I think RoRo almost cries as he dashes into a cute embrace with Lo. Logan giggles as he sees his baby brother smile. It really is the best feeling ever when you can be the cause of a smile.
Soon after the scene of pure wholesomeness, we head on our way to Joan and Talyn’s house. We are greeted by happy faces and a stack of gifts. This is normal I guess, like V mentioned, they always have piles of gifts for us.
“hiya!!! Glad you could make it! We decided to make a big meal instead of going out, I hope you guys don’t mind?” Talyn grins sheepishly. “and we also invited a couple more people. Sorry we didn’t tell you it was a surprise!”
“a surprise? Who’s here?” I ask, looking around them both to see. There are more gifts than usual. And they’re gift wrapped. Oh gosh what did I forget? Wait… what month is it? oops. I might’ve said that out loud.
“its January Pat.” Joan states simply with a growing grin. Oh god, it’s my birthday soon isn’t it.
“happy early birthday Patton-cake!” Talyn yells happily. Yup. Oh, I’m an idiot. I facepalm.
“I’m glad Joan called me on Monday, otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten your presents from us and brought them over!” V smirks as we walk in. of course they were all plotting against me, I should have known! As I walk in, I see Leo, Jamahl, Dominic, Dahlia, Kenny, Derionna, Rafaela, calypso, and oh god, how did they get Elenora?!? I don’t think I’ve ever even talked about her to them!!! Not to mention that she must be horribly jetlagged!
“oh my god no way!!! I love you guys so much aaaa!!! How do you even know Elie?!?” I say as I go around giving hugs to my friends from back in high school that I’ve missed so much.
“dude, Els is in a bunch of my classes. She never shuts up about work, so it was easy to find out that you guys knew each other. Not to mention her constant fawning over ‘doctor sanders’” Elie punches Joan in the arm.
“listen here bean boozled, are you gonna keep outing me or are we gonna start this party? I estimate the time between now and when I fall unconscious from exhaustion and jetlag is t minus 4 hours.” She states matter of factly. God, I love her, I’m so far gone.
Joan and Talyn attack me with a hat while I’m fantasizing, and they laugh mischievously as they drag me over to the table.  Joan’s saying something in one ear and Talyn’s saying something else in my other and I’m confused as heck, but all my friends surround me as well as my baby brothers and start singing at me. I don’t even comprehend what they’re saying because my brain can’t remember the last time I had a surprise party, and its actively making me remember my 14th when my dad and mom threw me a giant birthday bash and it was all day long and we fell asleep in a pile on the couch and before I can stop it all the voices start freaking out and I touch my face and I finally notice that I’m crying, and gosh I just ruined it of course gosh darn it they all went out of their way to make this and now I’m just sad and crying. I feel a thud and finally pay enough attention to see Roman hugging me tightly and apologizing. I pat his head and smile at him before kneeling down and reassuring him.
“Ro Hun, it’s not your fault I’m crying, I just remember mom and dad that’s all. I was caught up in my head but I’m fine. I promise ro. Do you wanna help me blow out the candles?” Roman smiles widely and nods. I pick him up and we blow out the candles together. The others all smile and cheer. Joan stands next to me with a smirk. Oh gosh they’re going to have me do something dangerous and I’m gonna agree because its going to be fun and d a n g e r o u s.
“you realize we are stealing you tomorrow to go barhopping right? Els even offered to dd for us! I mean of course, she’s sorta still underage for a few more months, but yeah, you, me, Talyn, and els are going to have birthday bash part two and its going to sick as Fu-” I cover their mouth before they can finish their swear.
“my baby brothers are here!!! No swearing!!! It’ll hurt their poor innocent ears!!!” I see Virgil and Logan give me a skeptical look before I gesture at Roman and I see their eyes widen in realization, before they nod furiously in agreement. Roman obliviously drags Logan off to play with the bubbles that Joan had gotten to keep the little ones occupied. I uncover their mouth and shoot them a look before giving it up for a smile as I hug them.
“thank you for this Joan, it’s kind of you. You didn’t have to really, haven’t even seen you guys in a few months!”
“that’s exactly why we did it. We don’t need a reason to give the littles gifts, and if we have a reason to give you gifts you won’t turn them down. You never have been one for spontaneous presents, but you know what, I love ya man, and you deserve to get shit on your birthday you oaf. I always felt bad that you wouldn’t let me help you and the kids when we were still in high school. God its been so long now, we’re old pat! You know my mom always tells me that they’d be so proud of you whenever I tell her what you’ve been doing. She actually wanted me to give you something, its wrapped in the pile of gifts.” They winked and nodded over to the living room where far too many gifts in my opinion, were sitting. The rest of my friends were there too, keeping themselves entertained one way or another, and I saw that Logan and Roman were running around outside chasing bubbles.
I go over to the stack and feel immediately intimidated. I hear the door open and Roman and Logan come inside. They sit behind me and I grab the first present that I can reach. The wrapping is purple plaid and Virgil’s name is scrawled on the tag. I open it up and look at my brother with a mocking look as I pull out a pale blue lab coat with dog face emojis.
“oh my gosh you dork I love it!!!” I pull it on quickly, seeing how it fits and beam at him.
“I’m glad. You’ve got another one somewhere from me” ugh of course that’s how there’s so many gifts.
I grab the next one with the same wrapping and rip it open only to see a new surgical kit, which I had been desperately needing to get but had been avoiding. They’re ridiculously expensive and I haven’t had the money to spare. I don’t know how vee could have managed to get that much money, and I don’t understand why he would spend it on me. I feel tears welling up in my eyes for the second time today, and launch myself at Virgil, picking him up and twirling him around. I see Elenora look at the tools out of the corner of my eyes.
“holy crap how did you afford these? This set is worth almost a thousand!” Virgil gives a feeble look as I set him down.
“I’ve been saving up for a few months, no big, you had mentioned you needed a new set a while ago, and I know you wouldn’t let anyone give you one. You can’t give this one back otherwise it’d be wasted so ha I win.” He ends with a smirk, and I punch him in the arm for calling me out on my OCD about work.
I grab my next gift which is a deep red with a matching bow. I peel off the paper and see a Pooh bear onesie and I smile down at it before laying back to smile at Roman who is giggling loudly.
“Lo helped me find it!!! I know you love Pooh, so I thought you’d like it!!!”
“he had tried to get you a size that fit him at first it was really quite adorable. We got him a Tigger one to match but we told him he had to keep it hidden until you got yours.”
I reached out for a hug and instead Roman kissed my nose then pushed me back into a sitting position. I huffed dramatically before grabbing my next gift, from Logan. I rip open the striped paper and see a book called animal madness, about animal mental health, and I feel my smile widen. There’s another book, by Jackson galaxy called total cat mojo and I might have squealed a little bit?
“LOGAN, I LOVE THIS THANK YOU SO MUCH OH MY GOSH OH GEEZ THESE WILL BE SOOOOO HELPFUL!!!!!!” Logan smiles and chuckles softly.
“I had imagined so, you have said that a couple of your patients have had mental issues more than physical and you’ve seen them more often due to their owners not knowing how to treat them, I hope the books hold deeper insight than google.”
I give him a big hug, and then grab the next presents, opening one after another all very sweet but also rather irrelevant gifts including coffee, cooking ware, and fandom stuff. I eventually get to Elenora’s gift though, which I was slightly scared about opening if I’m being honest? It could be anything, what would she get me? I open the rose gold box that holds a few different items. The first I notice is a necklace with a four pawprints on them, each a different color, red, navy, cyan, and purple, and each with me and my brothers’ names. I smile softly at it as I put it on. The next thing in the box is a new stethoscope that matched my light blue theme at work. After that is a build a bear Alolan Vulpix plush with an absolutely adorable cloak and a spare outfit. I squeeze it and it sounds so cute??? I’m so glad I share my obsession with Pokémon with her it makes work that much more enjoyable. The next thing I pull out is a dual sapphire and ruby pop head set and I let out a laugh at it, she knows me so well, I had mentioned I loved their characters and that they reminded me of my mom and dad once offhandedly, and yet she’s gotten me ruby and sapphire things three times now. I pull out a gift card to pizza shop I adore, and the last item in the box is a card that says read later, so I throw a glance her way as I put the card in the pile.
I thank her, and give her a hug, before turning my attention to the last present remaining, the present from Joan’s mom, who was basically my second mom growing up. I pull apart the wrapping hesitantly, and I almost let out a choked sob at what is in the package. It’s a letter from my parents. I cover my mouth as I grab the letter and read it.
“dear Patton, we hope this letter reaches you in good health, and that we are still in contact when you reach 21.” I make some odd strangled noise and my eyes start filling with tears. “no matter how our relationship is, we have a present for you. Patton cake, we know you’re only a year old now, but when you get this, we want you to know that no matter what we love you so so much and we want you to be happy no matter what. So, if you’ll forgive us if we’ve hurt you, we want you to have this glass and drink. Your mom made that glass right after you were born. She believes that the essential gift for a 21-year-old was a wine glass and a nice red wine. This wine is the same one I had on my 21st with my father and I saw it fitting to share it with you. I love you so so much son, and I hope you know that you’re in my heart wherever I am. The same goes for your mother. You know me and how paranoid I am, so this will probably be given to you by my best friend who I don’t doubt will grow close to you. In case anything happens, not that it will.” I don’t think I can breathe anymore oh my god this is from my dad- “but anyways ill stop rambling” no dad please keep talking don’t go please! “happy birthday Patton, you make me and your mom so proud. I love you so much” I wheeze and double over, I can’t breathe my dad, it was almost like he was there again, my dad was there and I-
I open the wrap on the glass, the crystal glass has an imprint that has the words “you’re capable of anything” and me and my parents’ names inscribed in it. Etched in, not just printed, its won’t fade, it will always be there. I look up at the roof to stop my tears, and to hopefully tell my mom and dad I love them if there is an afterlife. I wish I could see them one more time and be able to say goodbye. I can’t, but god it hurts so bad, I miss them so much its not fair they should have been able to come home they should be here they should have been here to see Roman and Logan and Virgil grow up it’s not FAIR GOD DAMN IT!!! I need to calm down, its in the past its over I can’t change it I can just keep going. I take a few deep breaths and wipe my eyes. I set down the glass and look at Joan.
“Joan, I need you to thank your mom for me, I-I owe her so much for this I can’t even properly explain just how much this means to me. If she ever needs anything let me know, I will do anything to help.” Joan nods and smiles at me softly.
I breathe a few more deep breaths before standing up.
“now, that’s enough of that. There’s cake and games!!!”

3 and 4 + we're a shimmering balance act
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
Zoe doesn’t tell her about the disappointment when Madison was nowhere to be found when she woke up shortly after her experience with death.
She doesn’t tell her how sometimes she’d wake up and expect Madison to be sleeping in the bed across from her, ready to fling her into the wall if she wakes her up any earlier than ten against her own will.
She leaves out how she found out what happened to Madison through divination, how she screamed and cried and hit Kyle before he was put to the stake, how she obsessed over trying to find Madison and a way to bring her back until finally Cordelia told her it’s no use, not without Misty.
Zoe doesn’t tell her any of that at all.
4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
“You two have more sexual tension than Cordelia and Misty did for the first few weeks after Misty came back.”
“Mallory!” Cordelia chastises.
“Excuse me?” Zoe gapes.
Mallory flashes a somewhat apologetic smile towards Cordelia before returning her attention to Zoe. She shrugs as she replies, “The constant flirting? Yeah, it’s getting out of hand.”
Zoe sputters in disbelief. “We don’t - we’re not - Madison and I never - What? No way!”

Broken Road + fic asks 1-15
the (broken) road to recovery
synopsis: After going over the edge, Eric Cartman is sent to Peak View, a behavioral clinic in Colorado Springs. However, when Eric meets his psychiatrist, it may take him longer than expected to leave.
1.       What inspired you to write the fic this way?
The idea of this ficactually came to me while I was walking home one day last semester and I thinkthe night I thought of it, I took my laptop out and jotted ideas almostspontaneously. I wanted to take up the idea because I wanted a more seriousattempt at writing Eric Cartman. This kind of sounds funny because I always tryto write a more mature Cartman in oneshots, especially with Kyman, but not to…theextent of this fic?
I feel like peoplejust don’t care enough about Cartman in the SP fanbase to attempt to write arealistic portrayal of his character. Most people who do incorporate Cartman(and yes, incorporate in the sense that they just add him in the backround ornot as important roles) do it to have an antagonist character, or someone withopposing views than the main character or ship, and they just don’t take hispotential characterization seriously. They act like he is such a jokecharacter, and that his tendencies and mentalities aren’t valid and don’t deserve asmuch attention as other characters.
And I’m not reallytrying to sound like a bitch, but a few characters who have had less than anhour’s worth of screentime make up the majority of SP fanfiction with hardlyany distinguishable attributes, when a character who was been there sincecreation, in almost every single damn episode, is pushed to the side? What kindof shit is that?
You can dislikeCartman all you want, but treating like his character means nothing or didnothing to the show is just infuriating to me.
So yeah, that wasmostly influenced me. Didn’t mean to turn this into a rant, but I guess I did?I don’t know.
2.       What scene did you first put down?
I write in order, almost all of the time, so the first scene of course was the bathroom/hygienescene. The idea of writing different scenes at different times is just so weird, like I respect how people can do it but how?
3.       What’s your favorite line of narration?
The recent chapter Iuploaded had a lot of good stuff, but chapter three had some of my favoritebits in there. I especially like, Hedidn’t care about the opinions from anyone else but himself, and possibly thestrange man who managed to tangle himself in the boy’s life, uncalled for.Sharp eyes, an impenetrable wit, all traits that Eric thought only he couldcarry.
4.       What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
This is narrative/dialogue. “Ilove you, sweetie.”
Eric said nothing as the door closed, he only threw the plate into thedishwasher and made his way upstairs.
 5.       What part was hardest to write?
Compared to otherstories, this entire plot is harder to write just because it is a multi-chapand I’m not entirely used to writing those. (the closest I have been wasanother multi-chap south park centering Kyle I tried writing years ago, and mylord of the flies oneshot compilation which isn’t really a multi-chap but justa bunch of oneshots). I guess the theme and tone of the story is the hardestpart to been relatively consistent. Obviously things change all the time but Iwanted to make this story as slow and in-depth as possible. I wanted there tobe many facets to it. I guess that’s the hardest part.
6.       What makes this fic special or differentfrom all your other fics?
Like I said, this ficis a Cartman-centric story.
Unless it’s Kyman, I don’t really write Cartman inthe spotlight, or if I do it’s because I want him as the main POV for Kyman. Iwanted this to be a refreshing change to the characters I star when writing. Also the way I am planning future chapters, this story is going to the longestcontinuous story I will have ever written, even longer than some of myoneshots.
7.       Where did the title come from?
‘Road to Recovery’ isa term that basically stuck with me while I was jotting down ideas in thebeginning. Originally that was what the story was going to be called, and thatwas it. However I wanted a bit of a twist, so of course I inserted the ‘broken’in there.
I honestly don’t spend too much time withnames, if I feel something matches a oneshot or story well, I’ll use it.However with future oneshots I am writing right now I am going to try to changethat. I want my titles to hold a little more weight.
8.       Did any real people or events inspire anypart of it?
Honestly no. I’venever known anyone in real life that went to a rehab center or neededto go. However I tried to research some in the Colorado area (name of Peak Viewis actually from a place in Colorado).
9.       Were there any alternate versions of thisfic?
Nope. I don’t reallydo alternate versions for my stories.
10.   Why did you choose this pairing for thisparticular story?
So. The story istagged with, ‘Kyle Broflovski/Eric Cartman’ (or the other way around I don’tremember), but honestly I put the tag in there because I wanted the two primarycharacters to be Eric and Kyle. I wanted there to be a process that Eric wentthrough to see himself, to learn to accept himself and his life, and that acharacter like Kyle could help him. I honestly didn’t see this as a wholereligious metaphor or something, where Kyle is his ‘savior’ or something likethat. I did not want the story to come out like that. While I did want Kyle’spresence to resonate something in Eric, I wanted it to be for Eric to come to himselfmore emotionally, to actually make a difference in his life.
Honestly I don’t wantto say anything without spoiling future plot points, but let’s see a reciprocalrelationship won’t be the highlight I want to achieve with this fic even if it’sa possibility.
11.   What do you like best about this fic?
I honestly feel somuch passion for this story. This might sound hilarious to some of you becauseI update slowly, but I always think about what I want to do next and how Ishould do it. It’s been a while since I had this much love for something I’vebeen writing.
12.   What do you like least about this fic?
The amount of time ittakes for me to update honestly. School is such a bitch.
Okay but with anon-bullshitty answer. The least thing I like about this fic is how many linebreaks I use. I am going to try with future chapters to not make everything sodisjointed. That’s something I could definitely work on.
13.   What music do you listen to, if any, to getin the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, whatdo you think readers should listen to accompany us while reading?
I don’t really listento music. It seldom helps me write and I often become distracted.
I might make aplaylist eventually. I don’t know, I don’t really associate music with this ficfor some reason.
14.   Is there anything you wanted readers tolearn from reading this fic?
Basically that whilethings may be hard while having a mental illness there will always be peopleout there willing to listen to you, to offer help for you regardless of thecircumstance. It could be hard, you may not feel like you have the patience, but things will get better if you allow them to.
15.   What did you learn from writing this fic?
I am learning moreabout to write a character with a mental illness, I never had done it beforeand it’s really been helping me to look into research and such going into it.This story has really helped me with researching topics I hadn’t before andlearning more about these kinds of institutions and such.
Also I am justlearning the best way to write a multi-chap since it is so out of my element.
Thank you!

Derek Waters previews 'Drunk History Christmas Special' — and Season 5

‘Tis the season to be jolly, which sometimes involves alcohol, so it was only a matter of time until Drunk History did a Christmas special (premiering tonight on Comedy Central). Not that that’s what co-creator Derek Waters necessarily set out to do. As always, he and Jeremy Konner determined which stories excited them most while researching new stories, and then looked for a link.
Waters never knew that George Washington (Rob Corddry) crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day 1776 for a sneak attack on drunk and hungover Hessian soldiers. “I got nervous because we were shooting that on a real projection screen for the background — some of those shots were too good. So whenever it looked too good I’m like, ‘Let’s throw fake ice.’ I always am very conscious of the show never taking itself too seriously,” Waters says. See also: the use of tiny models for the wide shots of the boats in the tale, narrated by Craig Anstett. “It was ice cubes in a very small tub, and those little models being pulled by fishing wire,” Waters says. “It’s a tough job.”

Next, he learned the story of how a washed-up Charles Dickens (Colin Hanks) was forced to self-publish A Christmas Carol. “I wanted to make it like a little Christmas play,” he says. “Phil Hendrie, the narrator, is one of my all-time heroes. He has the best radio show in history, and Colin is a fan of his. I thought Colin would be able to play it so genuine. He makes me feel good at Christmas. Colin Hanks feels like Christmas. Yeah, I’m confident in saying that: He feels like Christmas.”

Suddenly they just needed one more story to make a holiday-themed half hour. Conservationist Teddy Roosevelt (Ken Marino) banned Christmas trees in the White House? Perfect. The true delight here: watching the young actors playing Roosevelt’s sons Archie (Cole Sand) and Quentin (Noah Ziggy James) lip-syncing narrator Rich Fulcher’s choice language. (Don’t expect an all-kids themed episode of Drunk History anytime soon, though. “People drunk, and kids lip-syncing bad language makes me a little nervous,” Waters says. “Most of the time it’s me asking my friends [to do the show], and I don’t want to brag, but I’m not friends with that many kids. So these kids just auditioned, and those two were my favorite.”)
Drunk History fans have more to look forward to after the holidays: Season 5 premieres in January, and it’s the biggest season to date — 14 episodes with a total of 42 stories. The premiere’s theme is “Heroines,” with stories narrated by first-timer Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip) and returning favorites Paget Brewster and Amber Ruffin. Waters is also looking forward to the episode called “Drunk Mystery,” which is a parody of one of his favorite shows, Unsolved Mysteries. “I play Robert Stack. It’s pretty amazing,” he says. “Vanessa Bayer’s in that. Kyle Mooney from SNL is the narrator. Taran Killam is in that episode. Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons. It’s an all-star cast this season.”
He’s the first to admit that anybody in his position, promoting a new season of a show, will insist the new episodes are the best to date. “But this [season] is by far, way better than anything that we’ve done,” he says. “I make it a point that the show won’t get old, and make it thinking of a fan — like how would I watch this and not be like, ‘Come on, I’ve seen this before’? The stories are more exciting. The actors are more exciting. The narrators are more exciting. It’s just good history.”
Although he likes to keep the stories a surprise, he will tease that Evan Rachel Wood makes her return. “You don’t pick favorites, but she might be my favorite person that I’ve ever worked with. Just mind-blowing. Mind-blowing. Wait until you see who she plays and the commitment that she has,” he says. Also, there is an episode called “Underdogs,” in which Jenny Pearson makes her debut as a narrator. “She tells the story about an Asian girl who created the design for the Vietnam War Memorial,” he says. “You look at that story and you’re like, ‘Well, that’s not very funny,’ but if you get someone funny to tell it, they’re going to be able to find funny moments in it, and it’s one of the best stories.”
One thing we definitely won’t see this season: a Donald Trump-themed episode. “You can’t have drunk people talk about something that’s too recent and too sad. It has not crossed my mind, just because I think my job, and the show’s job, is to make you forget about what’s going on and to make you laugh, but also tell stories that make you go, ‘Oh wow, this is still going on?’ You know, where it’s not too recent, but it’s also tackling topics that still exist and still need to be taken care of,” he says. “I like the show being political in its own way of talking about stories that have a beginning, middle, and end. This one just doesn’t have an end yet.”
The Drunk History Christmas Special premieres Nov. 28 at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central.
