#but tomatoes and chilis are going ham
thepioden · 2 years
Text
I planned on making hot pepper jelly and habanero sauce this weekend, but I think salsa and candied jalapenos may also be in the cards. There's still at least this many baby chilis down in the garden.
Tumblr media
That is a 3 gallon bucket of tomatoes, for scale.

meal ideas!
low energy ("do not ask me to do any prep work at all, so help me god")
mozzerella cheese wrapped in pepperoni ("pizza tacos"!)
hummus and pretzels or naan (putting the naan in the microwave for like 10 seconds...heavenly)
canned chili (with shredded cheese and sour cream if you have it! boom done!)
instant miso soup (warm and lovely! put tofu in it for protein!)
cheese and cured meat, olives, canned fish, crackers, dried fruit, or whatever easy "charcuterie" type items you like
alternate bites of apple and spoonfulls of peanut butter (mixing honey or chocolate chips to the peanut butter is my favorite)
a "deconstructed sandwich": bites of lunch meat, pickles, cheese, cherry tomato, etc (I love roast beef and white cheddar for this)
yogurt and granola or fruit
put frozen potstickers + frozen edamame in the steamer/rice cooker, chill elsewhere with a timer set, then boom
tortilla chips + canned refried beans + cherry tomatoes + cilantro + jarred salsa con queso (or warm shredded cheese on top of the chips in the microwave for 30 seconds)
bagel + cream cheese + lox
microwave scrambled eggs (add things like green onion, soy sauce, or anything else you like!)
cottage cheese and fruit (mixed together or just on the side)
bowl of shredded rotisserie chicken + buffalo sauce + a bit of mayo + green onion (use a kitchen scissors to cut them right in!)
medium energy ("I'll boil water but don't ask me to chop shit")
boiled eggs and fresh veggies (put a little salt on top of the eggs!)
buttered noodles (my go-to nausea meal, it has never failed me. ideas of things to add: frozen peas, imitation crab, roasted garlic)
baked potato with toppings (I like cheese, bacon, broccoli, green onion, and sour cream)
quesadilla (add some canned beans, cilantro, or avocado!)
pot roast (requires a lot of time but not a lot of actual work. I love it with peas!)
cuban sandwich (bread, swiss, pickle, mustard, ham... my favorite thing to panini-ify by far)
pan-fried tofu with scallion sauce (this sauce goes well with everything and tofu is no exception)
pancakes or waffles! (I love mine with jam)
ham, pickle, and cream cheese roll-ups
fried eggs (with toast and lots of butter...so comforting)
fruit smoothie (bananas, frozen strawberries, yogurt...or whatever!)
I hate salad but could write essays on this copycat olive garden salad (throw it in a bowl! chopping required if you use onion)
spaghetti (controversial maybe but angel hair > spaghetti noodles)
pasta salad (olives broccoli fresh mozerella... those little mini pepperonis... yeah)
stir-fried thai garlic shrimp (I like using the mini frozen salad shrimps, it's easy! use jarred minced garlic to avoid chopping!)
tuna mayo onigiri
slow cooker ribs
buffalo chicken wrap (or any number of other wrap options! shred pre-cooked rotisserie chicken to make it easier)
if your local grocery store sells pre-cooked gyro strips, that can turn into an easy wrap with store-bought pita & tzatziki with tomatoes and onions!
couscous and chickpeas
tortellini + pasta sauce + spinach
high energy ("I don't mind chopping some things up!")
stuffed shells with spinach
chicken and roasted garlic (oh my god.....one of my all time favorites)
beef tacos (I like mine with cilantro and onion, and when I'm feeling especially high energy I love a tomatillo salsa)
chicken alfredo
tom kha gai (a thai soup and my absolute favorite! you just need access to galangal)
lasagna! (freezes well and then boom! low energy meal for later)
pad thai! (not as hard as you'd think, as long as you have access to tamarind paste!)
potstickers! (this is a lovely group activity if you want to cook with housemates!)
rice and beans
bang bang shrimp (ogughfhgfuh I love it. you can also do bang bang tofu!)
minestrone soup (so many nice veggies!)
fried rice (put whatever you have on hand in there! broccoli, peas, carrot, and beef is my favorite combo)
broccoli cheddar soup
spring rolls and peanut sauce
skewers (such as beef, onion, zucchini, bell pepper... you don't need a grill, oven works!)
roasted turkey with garlic parmesean asparagus
pork chop with mashed potatoes
panang curry
chicken gnocchi soup (use store bought gnocchi or make your own if you have a high energy day!)
bibimbap (super customizable depending on what veggies you like best)
butter chicken
plus! things that have helped me meal plan:
whenever you think of a meal you'd like to make, take 3 seconds to google search it, take a screenshot of the image results, and put it in a "food ideas" folder. instant visual menu!
the concept of "meal prepping" makes me recoil but I've learned that it can simply mean preparing shredded chicken, boiled eggs, or some other simple protein that you can customize throughout the week. shredded chicken can turn into wraps, salads, pasta dishes, etc... you don't have to meal prep yourself into the same meal all week!
when I have difficulty working up an appetite, I'll scroll through my favorite restaurant menus! there might be some foods I can't make at home, but many times they're very simple to recreate because the ingredients are literally listed!

Hey Tal! I was preparing stuffed jacket potatoes for my family and it made me wonder;
"If each race was given a baked potato (any veriety), what would they stuff it with? (Let's pretend the bosmer is non pact compliant but still likes honoring their roots.)"
Since you'll find potatoes in every other barrel across Tamriel, you can bet that stuffed baked potatoes are probably the most universal dish we know of. Whether you love them or were fed too many of them as a child, there's a baked potato out there for everyone in Tamriel.
Altmer
You know what, the High Elves really have to be fancy about everything. Instead of gutting and filling your regular jumbo jacket potato like literally everybody else, they make large hasselback potatoes and painstakingly insert ingredients between the slots before baking. These laborious (but admittedly delectable) potatoes are usually offered filled with either four cheeses; mozzarella, tomatoes, and pesto; roasted vegetables with tapenade, or pancetta, gruyere, and sausage.
Argonians
Baked potatoes are great for playing a heated game of teeba-hatsei with, much to the rage of many an Argonian parent who had painstakingly made dinner. When they're not being slapped around for a laugh, Argonians eat their baked potatoes by making a well in the centre and crack a hot quail egg in, before topping it with deep fried mealworms or crickets and a bit of lime sambal. Scramble it up and you're good to go!
Bosmer
To every Green Pact-abiding Wood Elf I'm about to sadden with this, I apologise in advance for what I'm about to propose. But imagine a lovely jacket potato stuffed with a good slathering of smoked timber mammoth cheese atop battered thunderbug eggs, smoked bristleback bacon, jalapeño mayo, and sweetgnat butter. I don't need to imagine it; I made one with my friend Berrilyn, and it was glorious. Definitely on the heavy side, but loaded with every good ingredient Valenwood has to offer!
Bretons
Cheap, filling, and delicious. That's all a baked potato needs to be in High Rock, making it one of the Province's most popular foods among the common folk. Just about every sauce-based dish you can think of can go onto a jacket potato, from melted roquefort, goose egg, and dry cured ham to the classic combination of tomato beans and candied bacon rashers, and even reusing yesterday's Tarragon Chicken! There aren't really any limits on what you can fill a jacket potato with in High Rock, as long as you have a good knob of butter in there!
Dunmer
While potatoes are a perfectly standard and valid ingredient in Morrowind, I know you all want to hear about jacket ash yams. Popularised by Ashlanders, who bake their potatoes on lava, jacket ash yams can be found at every tavern and cornerclub across the Province. Minced nix-ox in a spicy comberry ragout; scrambled kwama eggs with caramelised scathecraw; and even Hackle-lo and Scuttle Curry are at home on a big, piping lava-hot ash yam. Don't forget to get some crunchy deep-fried kwama scrib to go on top- well worth the gold, I promise!
If you get the hankering for a taste of Morrowind, try my Raven Rock Baked Ash Yams.
Imperials
There are two rules surrounding baked potatoes in Cyrodiil: the potatoes must always be Jumbo Potatoes, and you must always use olive oil instead of butter. With that flavour profile in mind, think simple, complementary toppings like sundried tomatoes with goat cheese and fresh basil; cheese curds and red wine gravy; bresaola, chili oil, and gorgonzola, and browned pine nut butter with a good smear of ricotta and creamed battaglir.
Khajiit
Northern and Southern Elsweyr have a distinct difference in their baked potatoes: the North likes them rich and spicy, while the South prefers sweeter flavours that complement moon sugar. Northern Elsweyr is famous for its fiery curry-filled jacket potatoes, filled to the brim with rich, generally tomato-based curries featuring local ingredients like braised jerboa, pulled terror bird, and diced mutton. Meanwhile in Senchal, you'll find your average baked potato partially filled with things like chicken satay pieces in moon sugar peanut sauce, haloumi with moon sugar syrup, and sweet crispy shrimp and pork floss. But wait, 'partially filled?' Yep! In Southern Elsweyr, the insides of the potato are scooped out and rolled together with powdered moon sugar to make horrifically sweet potato 'candy' for dessert after you've finished your jacket potato. Who am I to judge?
Nords
Mammoth cheese? Horker bacon and smoked kippers? Pulled pheasant in brown ale gravy? All very valid and very traditional Skyrim options. However, I'm jumping up and down at the thought of a baked potato topped with freshly baked salmon or gravlaks with dill, lots of sour cream, and a bit of mustard! Simple, good, and I will shout at anyone who calls this combination bland. You can take the girl out of Riften, but never the Riften out of the girl.
Orcs
Where Wrothgarian Orsimer are concerned, there's a joke that every other meal is a baked potato (and that's sometimes the unfortunate case when a Hearth-Wife isn't very good at her job.) Gooey, mouthwatering echatere cheese raclette is the favoured topping in the region, melted atop of a bed of fillings like spicy wrathberry gravy with echatere or beef chunks; chopped mammoth bratwurst; grilled chub loon with frost mirriam barbecue sauce, and deep fried horker lard bits and sweet-and-spicy minced horker. Indulgent, and by Malacath, they're filling too.
Redguards
Where the Orcs have their echatere cheese on jacket potatoes, Hammerfell loves its goat cheese. Whether it's aged chèvre log slices or fresh and crumbly, you can bet it's going on a baked potato. It's paired with a range of moreish fillings, like harissa and apricot chicken; tender goat mince with a cumin-based curry; battered, fried snake with a tangy and sweet lemon drizzle, and shawarma meat with creamy garlic sauce and caramelised onions.

Fueling those café au’s in my head... Part 2!
This time let’s look at what baked goods they would enjoy. 🫶🏼 (based on what I offer in shop & some new ideas!)
Part One: Drinkies!
Hitoshi S.
Will buy the cute seasonal sugar cookies, especially the cat themed ones during the spring & fall. Otherwise a blueberry muffin will suffice. If he’s really hungry a baked cheese & plant “sausage” turnover.
Denki K.
Frosted muffins, loaves & scones. The frosted matcha & vanilla crème Swiss roll is a favorite of his. But the frosted strawberry scone is a good second choice. Will be the one to order a breakfast bagel when super hungry.
Katsuki B.
He enjoys spice over sweet that much is true. He’s not one to order baked goods often, but there’s a hatch chili bread released during the later fall season that he will buy a slice or two of. If not, a savory maple sausage pull-apart roll every once in a while never hurt.
Izuku M.
Flaky pastries!! Always always. Chocolate croissant? Yes. Spinach feta croissant? Also yes. Spiced ham & pepper Jack cheese blossom? … yes. Quiches with buttery crust. Biggest yes. It’s used in so many dishes and so yummy in his opinion.
Shoto T.
Plain/simple flaky pastry or biscuit. Usually something to go along with his tea. There’s an orange blossom and currant biscotti that he’s grown fond of thanks to midoriya’s suggestion. Will have some quiche if offered. Not the meat heavy ones though.
Eijirou K.
Sweet boy loves some sweet loaf slices. He will indulge in pumpkin spice during the season. Otherwise the spiced loaf or apple crumble loaf are great choices. Will get the warm breakfast sandwiches on fresh bread.
Hanta S.
Contrast to his drinks and similar to bakugo, Sero likes the more savory pastries. The rosemary & tomato tart is the perfect snack. While the chili, egg & spinach blossom is a good breakfast option in his eyes.
Tenya I.
Cinnamon roll, no raisins but yes to cream cheese icing. Only once in a blue moon though. He allows himself to enjoy this with his classmates. Otherwise a buttery croissant will do, there’s no need for the excess sugar all the time.
Dabi
Again this mf doesn’t go to coffee shops… Will take warm bread, he likes the softness of it when it’s freshly baked. The topped toast options are usually what he goes for. The special spices Ogura jam with everything bagel seasoning is a go to.
Hawks
Learned to like the Ogura jam pastries because of Dabi. Will get the baked Ogura & sea salt stuffed rolls. There’s also a seaweed flakes croissant he enjoys with a sweet plum jam.
Mirio T.
Loves to try just the most American sounding baked goods. Apple strudel with cinnamon, strawberry & rhuebarb blossoms, Canadian bacon and cheddar boomerang? All yeses! Tamaki has told him countless times that two of those things are decidedly not American but Mirio is too busy ordering to hear him.
Tamaki A.
Is less shy when it comes to ordering pastries from his favorite bakery. Enjoys trying the new seasonal items. The sweet Sakura dango was a big hit with him. Will also get the milk bread toasted with a semi-runny egg & chives on top.
Shota A.
A bagel. He enjoys trying to different toppings but prefers having something easy to eat between classes and napping. Open to trying different kinds of bagels as well. Hizashi once bought him a breakfast bar and he enjoyed it. Still gets bagels though.
Hizashi Y.
Much like Tamaki, Hizashi likes trying the seasonal pastries. It only makes sense if he’s trying the seasonal drinks too! It’s the full experience. The toasted coconut & pineapple loaf was a surprising new favorite. So was the miso & cucumber tea sandwich.
*based on my view of them & their personalities*
Might do this for JJK or another fandom next. This has also given me new ideas for some trial goods in the bakery next week…

one of every ingredient they had at the store, no top bun
Ingredients: why. I had to go to the store to see what this would even be. The ingredients are apple, avocado, bacon, banana, basil, cheese, cherry tomatoes, chorizo, cucumber, egg, fried filet, green bell pepper, ham, hamburger, herbed sausage, jalapeño, kiwi, Klawf stick, lettuce, noodles, onion, pickles, pineapple, potato salad, potato tortilla, prosciutto, red bell pepper, red onion, rice, smoked filet, strawberry, tofu, tomato, watercress, yellow bell pepper, butter, chili sauce, cream cheese, curry powder, horseradish, jam, ketchup, marmalade, mayonnaise, mustard, olive oil, peanut butter, pepper, salt, vinegar, wasabi, whipped cream, and yogurt.
Smell: A disorganized harmony-less combination of smells. This is a combination of foods designed to confuse your mind. There is no single smell that can be isolated. 1/5
Taste: A broken chorus of tastes. Everything is out of place. Nothing is sacred. Taking one bite of this sandwich lets you blimps into hell. 1/5
Texture: Do I really have to describe it. It’s bad. 1/5
Would Chunk Eat It?: No. 1/5
Final Score: 1/5
Critic’s Notes: You could use all of these ingredients to make multiple good sandwiches instead of one shitty fucking garbage sandwich.

So, the drama currently going on in my life is Dave throwing a 3- month temper tantrum based on something I said months ago.
3 months ago, we were in a motel, and I was STILL sleeping on the floor. We had no food left besides bags of rice, cans of mixed veggies, and cans of diced tomatoes(plus salt, pepper, and garlic powder). Obviously, everyone was hungry. We only had a few dollars in the PayPal, and that money came from a renewed Subscription on my Ko-Fi.
At most, it was enough for rising-crust pizza at Walmart. Or... a tub of ice cream apparently.
See. Dave spent the past several hours complaining about there being no food and everything Bethy suggested was shot down cuz he had no money. Mom had no money. And there was less than $10 on PayPal, which was given through Ko-Fi, which PayPal took a portion of, so it was even less than the Subscription cost. And after hours of back and forth he suddenly sits up and goes, "Let's get ice cream."
So I, being the one with common sense and no small amount of annoyance, asked, "Why are we wasting money on ice cream after going hungry all day? Why would you buy ice cream instead of food?" (And his ass wonders why he can't lose weight? What is the obsession with ice cream ffs?)
Ever since then, he has been throwing a tantrum. Turns out, he HAD money of his own he just didn't want to use it personally. So, he drove out to get HIMSELF ice cream, and got like a pack of already-made cones, that he then ate all right there.
He was going to use MY MONEY to buy ice cream for everyone instead of getting like, stuff for PB&Js(which we could have afforded). He had some petty cash of his own on hand AFTER filling the gas tank, with more of MY MONEY.
His tantrum has extended all the way up to now. I've talked about how we've been able to do so much since we're not homeless anymore and we now have a stove. We've made homemade cheese sauce for mac n' cheese, homemade biscuits, homemade gravy, and homemade pasta. We've had chili, quesadillas, spaghetti & meatballs, baked chicken, ham & scalloped potatoes, hasselback potatoes, oatmeal, sausage gravy & biscuits, pancakes, rice, all sorts of canned veggies, soups, cereal, egg & cheese bagels, grilled cheese, PB&Js, lasagna, French Toast, and homemade Salisbury steak with a different homemade gravy.
Also, we made brownies. (And I'm gonna make choco chip cookies and Rice Krispy Treats soon.)
AND DAVE ATE NONE OF IT.
He whines about going hungry and having nothing to eat to anyone who will listen, but it's because of his own fragile ego. All cuz I had a problem with his plan on spending MY MONEY on shit we did not need; he's making it everyone else's problem.
(The biggest issue is that the lease is in his name this time so... mom doesn't want to start anything with him just to be safe. And ain't that a sad reality? We have to worry about potentially being kicked out if we offend him too much. After an entire year of me and donations from generous strangers keeping us afloat so we're not in a van all the time, we still can't fully relax cuz his ass is ungrateful. He's now telling people he's been working this entire time, and he will ignore all the good other people have done for us because it didn't come from him specifically.)

i'm sure we have all intuited in our hearts that vriska cannot cook, but i am going to volunteer a hypothesis for what kind of bad cook she is. because obviously there is a difference between a bad cook who just overdoes the meat, boils the vegetables & only uses table salt for seasoning, and a bad cook that can be counted upon to turn even something as simple as a ham sandwich into an unholy inedible concoction.
now hear me out: vriska is over-the-top. bombastic. a maximalist. definitely not, on any level, a pussy. she is also, as others have noted, extremely neglected due to being raised by a spider too big to enter her home and being forced to feed live children to said spider. one cannot expect her to have learned to prepare anything too elaborate in such conditions, nor to necessarily have had access to a fully stocked spice rack. my point being: vriska in the kitchen has one setting, and that is SPICY.
it's not that she particularly likes spicy food, per se, but she's not a pussy and won't have her friends, neighbors, or victims thinking she's a weakling because she skipped out on the heat. she overcompensates. if she's living on packets of hot instant ramen, she's also adding globs of hot sauce to make it even hotter. if her friends are eating potato chips, she's sprinkling cayenne on hers. if someone dares her to eat a ghost pepper she eats four. she's the exact same way in the other direction with sweet flavors, but less often.
now let's suppose, post-game, that vriska is invited to the egbert-crocker house and decides to make something delicious in their state-of-the-art kitchen. they don't have instant ramen; scratch that. they do have pasta and tomato sauce, but . . . what's in all these little plastic jars? and that's the story of how vriska made a tomato sauce with an entire jar of nutmeg, way too much dill, only slightly less cayenne than that, smoked paprika, lemon pepper, and yellow curry powder. she also managed to both over-boil the pasta and set it on fire.
recipes are for nerds and fussy prudes. with a full spice rack, vriska cooks by the seat of her pants, using luck of the draw. unfortunately, vriska's luck is famously rotten, and she just can't catch a break in the kitchen. if her spices are right for the recipe, her proportions are off; if her proportions are right her spice choices are wildly out of left field; if by some miracle both the spices and their proportions are pretty okay, she just can't resist dumping whatever sauces are in the fridge into whatever she's cooking, in whatever amounts she feels like. chili con carne? say hello to horseradish. fondue? meet barbecue sauce. potato soup? salutations to an entire liter of soy sauce. the only thing she can be trusted to safely prepare is a glass of ice water. anything with any more steps than "peel back flap and microwave on high for one minute" has room for embellishment, and boy does vriska love to embellish.
and also she just straight up doesn't know how to prepare things that aren't pre-packaged.
she's a total novice when it comes to real cooking, and as with all things misfortune brought on by hubris shall be her teacher.

Worldbuilding: The Quest for Pizza
No matter where in time and space you are, foods that taste like home make life so much better. There are a lot of American comfort foods that might be replicable in 1600s Northeast Asia, if you knew what you were doing. Off the top of my head, some classics include: apple pie, mac and cheese, jambalaya, spaghetti, hamburgers and French fries, and pizza.
Apple pie would be one of the easiest to pull off. Pastries are pretty much a thing everywhere you’ve got wheat flour, sugar’s available, and apples can be found all over given they went in both directions down the Silk Road, travelers knowing a good thing when they bit it. A little cinnamon for spice would be the most expensive part, but it’d be available; the spice trade is up and running all over the place. Give a local cook a good description, or ask for some kitchen time, and a slice of hot apple pie is entirely possible.
Mac and cheese should also be possible, though you may have to get a bit more creative. Noodles, definitely available. Macaroni or shell-style? That, you would have to describe a dough press for. Or just get flat fettuccini-style noodles and go with it. It’s probably easier to get yogurt than milk, but you can get cheese... if you’re in a northern area influenced by the Mongols and related tribes. So, if you’re in or around Manchuria (named for the Manchus), you’ve got it. It won’t be cheddar, not unless you wrangle that off some English traders, but actual water-buffalo mozzarella is a possibility! And if you like a little chili powder to add a hint of heat? So long as it’s post-1520s, you’re in luck. The Portuguese brought chilis along in their galleys. We can date chilis in China to somewhere between 1520-1550s, in Japan by the 1570s, and they were widespread in Korea by 1614; likely brought over by Hideyoshi’s invasion of 1592-1598.
Which leads us to jambalaya. Chilis, meat, rice, sausage, basil, oregano, garlic, onions, cilantro, and a lot of recipes call for tomatoes. Garlic and onions are ubiquitous in Eurasia; oregano and coriander (cilantro) are also in Asia, and basil’s originally from India. Tomatoes... yes, they would be there, European trade brought them in the 1500s too. But most people thought they were decorative, not so much food. You can get them. Convincing other people to eat them might take a bit.
With all those ingredients, spaghetti should be a given. Mangia!
Hamburgers and French fries, though - likely not. Oh, you can do ground meat, ketchup, and pickles, but potatoes didn’t historically get to China until almost the very end of the Ming Dynasty, brought by the Dutch right as the Manchus crashed the party and created the Qing Dynasty. Korean relations with the Manchus were touchy. Which might explain why Korea historically didn’t get potatoes until the 1800s.
But the trickiest of all would be pizza, at least if you like the classic ham, onions, green peppers and cheese. There’s some disagreement on exactly when bell peppers (almost no heat) were created from chili peppers (varying degrees of heat). Jefferson may have encountered a variety in the 1800s. But most people trace them back to Hungary in the 1920s. That’s right, green bell peppers in the 1600s would be historically inaccurate.
...I can guarantee you if Jason ever gets back to modern Earth, he’s raiding a seed catalog. Pizza!

🤝🤝🤝🤝 I am HOLDING YOUR HAND. The struggle of having to eat food every day. I don't know what I'm going to eat next year when I don't live with my parents who make meal plans every week. Probably rice with tomato sauce, cup noodles and too many biscuits. I'm not sure what American foods are because I don't know what you have in your supermarkets? But it's fair to not be sure what is typically American, you don't know what I would consider "exotic" since you don't know what my supermarkets look like either. We'll discover that when I come I guess. Just me overwhelmed at one of those huge supermarkets looking at all the options for things we don't have. If you don't like hot chocolate, what do you think of hot milk + honey? Oh oh oh okay what's a typical summer food for you? We eat a fair amount of melon (the small-ish orange-fleshed ones, I never see people talk about those online but you must have them right?) with cured ham in the summer, it goes well together. OH American *soups* I am very curious about. To me a normal soup is potato + carrot + leek all mixed smoothly, with croutons. But I keep seeing American talk about different kinds of soups so I'm curious.
eating food. smh. i enjoy it so much but man do i hate it /silly your food plans are the biggest mood sjfdkljsdf make sure you have a fruit or vegetable in there somewhere so u dont get scurvy, i may love pirates but i dont want my lovely wife dying like one sjdfklsdjf - i dunno!! we can take a trip to the store when ur here and whatever looks interesting (or particularly american) we can try out :D im more than happy to tell u about whatever we do end up finding :3
i've never had hot milk with honey :00 i want to try some at some point but im not a person who enjoys hot drinks so idk how i'd feel about it sjdklfjd - uuuuh summer food! lots of melons here too, watermelon and cantaloupe and honeydew. burgers and steak and other stuff you can grill :3
my mother doesn't like soup BUT despite that fact she has many an excellent soup recipe for us to try. Cheesy broccoli soup <3 <3 idk if chili counts as soup but there is a VERY good chili i'd like u to try. U PUT CROUTONS IN SOUP you are. a genius. why have i never tried that before. usually we just. put bread in it. which is kinda the same thing but also not. i will try croutons. soup is delicious. it's not filling at all whatsoever but it is very very good yes yes

This is a pretty typical monthly grocery shop for us. To get the most out of our Instacart subscription, I have to buy at least $35 at a time, or there's an extra fee.
Tumblr media
Currently already in our pantry:
Peanut butter
Jam
Pancake/waffle mix
Tuna
Potatoes
Butter
Swiss cheese slices
Fajita size tortillas
A few canned soups
Canned tomatoes
Dry beans
Dry rice
A decent variety of sauces, spices, condiments
(mostly purchased from DollarTree, which is more like an every-other-month shop)
I'm hoping the mild weather will let some of our collards start growing early, so I can use those instead of buying cabbage. Fingers crossed for some early chives too, because they make potatoes or ramen so much better! I didn't put in cucumbers or tomatoes last year, but I'm hoping to do that this year, but that's awhile off still.
So what do we do with this?
Basically it's a lot of mixing and matching.
We don't have a stove or oven, but we do have:
Microwave
Toaster oven
Small electric grill
Mini electric skillet
Mini waffle maker
Small slow cooker
Sometimes we can borrow a pressure cooker, air fryer, or larger slow cooker
We use ramen noodles without the flavor pack as the base for a lot of things. Especially because we don't have a stove, ramen noodles are far more microwave-friendly than other types of noodles or pasta, especially for the 11yo who will not monitor for boil-over 😒.
So we do tuna ramen, ramen with egg, I cook the cabbage and mushrooms in our mini electric skillet, just a few servings at a time, or do a larger batch in the slow cooker. Add that cabbage and mushrooms and the frozen peas to anything for flavor and texture.
We do "ramen spaghetti" and use canned tomatoes with seasoning. Sometimes I fry bologna in the little skillet to add to it like pancetta. Or I use an egg, cheese, and balogna to make a poor man's carbonara.
The tortillas become pizzas by adding canned tomatoes, cheese, and bacon bits. Pop it in the toaster oven and it's a perfect one-serving thin crust.
Rice or potatoes can also be the base for lots of good meals. Cabbage plus potatoes plus bologna or bacon bits can go in the slow cooker for a few hours to become something adjacent to colcannon.
I often use rice to bulk up leftovers or add to canned soup to stretch it into multiple meals.
Using some ham boullion, I can make a bean & cabbage soup. Use chicken boullion to make rice & mushroom soup.
Beans & cheese on a tortilla is easy to grab and go. We add seasonings to the canned tomatoes to make salsa.
As a treat we sometimes get tortilla chips for soccer days so we can make nachos with the beans, cheese, canned tomatoes. Sometimes I get canned chili for an easy bump in protein. Kiddo thinks watching soccer should always involve nachos for some reason 😂
We also do a variety of sandwiches, wraps, quesadillas with the bread or tortillas. Egg sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, grilled cheese, pb&j, bologna & cheese. During the summer sometimes we swap hot dogs for the bologna so we can cook them over our outdoor fire pit. We use bread or tortillas instead of buns.
We got the most adorable little waffle maker which makes mini waffles. And we've been all over Pinterest for waffle ideas. You can make an incredibly crispy egg in the waffle maker, with cheese & bacon if you want. Or dessert waffles with a bit of cinnamon and sugar. Or spread pb&j on for extra protein. You can also do lovely crispy hashbrown potatoes in the waffle maker, with or without cheese.

The Grand Buffet is Finally Back at Grand Hyatt Manila
Tumblr media
After four long years, The Grand Buffet is finally back at Grand Hyatt Manila! I have been waiting for them to bring back their full buffet setup for lunch and dinner ever since they had to stop it during the pandemic. While they already reopened their all-day dining cafe for buffet breakfast, they only offered an a la carte and a semi-buffet menu for lunch and dinner in the previous years. Now, I'm happy to once again be able to go around their expansive buffet and dining areas to try all these signature specialties.
Tumblr media
Indulge in an endless journey of flavors as The Grand Kitchen reopens its buffet service for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Hungry Kat was invited for a grand media launch last February 15, 2024 at The Grand Kitchen which you can find on the second floor, right after you go up the lobby's escalators. Our family loves staying at Grand Hyatt Manila during the holidays, so we've tried their buffet breakfast several times already, but I'm really excited to be here to try their newly reopened lunch buffet.
Tumblr media
The Grand Buffet is available daily for lunch from 12:00nn to 2:30pm at only P1888 nett per person. This is one of the best value-for-money rates you can find in a five-star luxury hotel in the city. The dinner buffet is also offered daily from 6:00pm to 10:00pm for P2888 nett person while breakfast buffet is at P1655 nett. They also have a special Grand Sunday Brunch for P3400 nett per person.
Tumblr media
The elegant and colorful interiors inside the Grand Kitchen provide a charming space that feels much like home. It doesn’t look like your typical busy restaurant at all, with its dark wooden hues and spacious surroundings. Guests can choose to sit at the long tables or at the more comfortable sofas and chairs.
Tumblr media
We actually like this dining area near the glass windows where you have a charming view of their gorgeous lobby lounge and the lobby itself just below.
Tumblr media
Nine chefs present their culinary mastery through key signature dishes spread out among different international stations at The Grand Kitchen. Guests can get a global gastronomic experience featuring a delightful array of Thai specialties, succulent meats from the grill, beloved Balinese and Chinese classics, authentic Japanese sushi, tempting Korean street food, and much more.
Tumblr media
Let's begin our journey at the Salad Station. Here you can create your own bowl of greens for a healthy start to your trip. You can also ask them to prepare a Caesar Salad for you, or the Som Tam Salad which is a Thai green papaya salad. There's also a selection of hams and cheeses including gouda, brie, manchego, emmen.
Tumblr media
Just nearby is the Bread Station serving Focaccia, baguette, sourdough, rye, and other freshly-baked breads.
Tumblr media
You can also get some pasta dishes like the Baked Mac & Cheese, penne with mushroom cream, beef lasagna, or. spaghetti with tomato sauce.
Tumblr media
I really love Japanese cuisine, so I headed to the Japanese Station offering lovely sushi and sashimi. I got myself a plate of salmon and tuna sashimi together with a few pieces of Aburi Sushi.
Tumblr media
The Tempura Moriawase was also my immediate target so I got myself a few pieces of these crunchy shrimp tempura.
Tumblr media
Now let's explore another country and head over to China. The Chinese Station presents these lovely roastings hanging on the glass window.
Tumblr media
Guests can ask for slices of Char Siu Pork, Hainanese Chicken, and Roasted Duck all in one plate. Combine these with your choice of chilis and sauces.
Tumblr media
You can also find some Taiwanese Pork Belly Buns and Mapo Tofu here. Other dishes you can try include salt and pepper pork, wok fried beef, and beef ho fan noodles.
Tumblr media
Next up is the Korean Section which comes with this colorful Korean Fried Chicken, Pork Galbi, Korean Spicy Beef and even French Fries.
Tumblr media
There's even a selection of Kimchi for those who love eating this spicy Korean side dish. I've never seen these many kinds of kimchi before so it's really a specialty here at The Grand Kitchen.
Tumblr media
Those who really like Asian food will definitely enjoy a trip to the Thai Station. Start with some Tom Yum Soup which you can customize with condiments and your preferred spice level.
Tumblr media
Other Thai specialties include the Thai Spring Rolls, Khao Pad, and Kaeng Phet which is a thick red curry that would go so well with rice.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I'm went ahead and got a small dessert because I really love the Mango Sticky Rice. This is what I always look for when I go to Thailand and I also like this version at The Grand Buffet.
Tumblr media
Don't worry if you prefer something more familiar, because they also have a dedicated station offering Filipino favorites like the Pork Adobo, Beef Kaldereta, Laing, Fried Chicken, and even Garlic Rice.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Over at the carving station, you can ask for as many slices of this Beef Brisket in Barbecue Sauce as you want. The beef was really smoky and tender.
Tumblr media
If all those station are still not enough, head over to the Mongolian Barbecue and Grill Station where the chefs will cook your choice of meats and seafood on the grill.
Tumblr media
Choose your own ingredients to include inside your Mongolian Barbecue and they will prepare it for you.
Tumblr media
Better yet, ask them to grill your meats and seafood on the spot. Choose from among Pork Liempo, Chicken Inasal, Beer Marinated Beef, Mussels, Baby Squid, and Baby Octopus. There's also a Robata to Order where you can get Chicken Satay, Beef Satay, or Bacon Wrapped Moki.
Tumblr media
Both the lunch and dinner buffets come with free-flowing brewed coffee and tea, but you can add a few more refreshing drinks from their a la carte beverage menu. I had a refreshing Classic Homemade Iced Tea but you can also order fruit juices and even sparkling wine.
Tumblr media
For desserts, head over to the Dessert Station where you can choose from a variety of sweet treats. There's Mango Sago, Creme Brulee Pudding, Panna Cotta, Chocolate Brownies, Strawberry Shortcake, Tiramisu, Cheesecake, and Apple Crumble. You can also get a serving of Chocolate or Vanilla Sundae topped with sprinkles, gummy worms, and raspberry sauce.
Tumblr media
We would like to thank Grand Hyatt Manila Director for Sales and Marketing Eugene Tamesis and Director for Marketing and Communications Inah Manalaysay for inviting us to the grand launch of The Grand Buffet. This is the return that we had been waiting for and this will surely make our next stays at Grand Hyatt Manila even more enjoyable. Book your tables now!

The entirety of Chapter 46 of my albatross of a Work in Progress, Concordat.
(If you ever get a chance to write for Rufus Turner, do it. It's a thing of beauty and a joy forever.)
Tumblr media
The lights were off in the living room as if no one was there. As if everyone had gone to bed. But Bobby was wide awake, sitting on a kitchen chair he'd pulled up by the front door. Grinding his teeth as he watched headlights scroll across the walls. There was a knock at the door. Almost as soon as he heard it, Bobby was up and threw the door open to curse the darkness.
"Where the hell have you been?!" he yelled.
"I stopped at Chicken in a Hat," Rufus said defensively. "And I think I made damn good time, considering."
Oh, hell. It was just Rufus Turner, responding to the call to action they'd sent him at his own leisurely pace.
Bobby sighed, frustrated. "Not you," he said. "Get inside, I'm waitin' to holler at somebody. And mind your business."
"You know me," Rufus said, as if that the suggestion that he'd pry into Bobby's personal life was puh! Absurd.
"And don't eat at Chicken in a Hat," Bobby went on, shutting the door. And so it was that, before Bobby even knew it was happening, he'd fully switched gears from being pissed at Castiel and Dean to being on Rufus' case. "You heard about what they spend that money on-."
"Free market, Bobby," Rufus said, aggressively not-listening. "They make a good chicken sandwich, that's all I need to know."
"This coming from someone who won't set foot in a Jack in the Box."
"You wanna eat kangaroo meat, that's you're business. It's unclean." Rufus held up a ziplock bag of shrimp. "Where's the sauce? I wanna throw these in."
Bobby snickered at the bag. "Shellfish? What happened to Kosher law?"
"It's the 21st century, we all have refrigerators. You really think God cares if I have a ham sandwich?"
"Your god does."
"Not according to Cas, the actual angel you have livin' in your water heater closet. So ha. Now, where is he? The shrimp goes in the sauce and Cas makes the sauce or I won't eat it. Come on, I came here on an empty stomach."
Bobby started to get pissed again at the mention of Castiel. "You just said you had a chicken sandwich. And anyway, it's Prego, that boy's never peeled a tomato in his life."
"Is this because I won't eat your chili? Nobody ever asks you to make a whole stock pot-."
Suddenly, there was a creaking noise and Bobby put a hand up to shush Rufus. They both turned to the door and listened. More creaking. Whispering. Keys jingling and unlocking the door. The longer it took, the darker Bobby's glaring became. Breath heavy, nostrils flaring. This was the full Angry Dad emerging. Meanwhile, Rufus observed the situation (that he was totally not going to get involved in) with intense interest.
Dean opened the door, right in the middle of whispering something that sounded like, "Let me do the talking." He and Castiel shuffled into the living room and Bobby flipped the lights on. Cas and Dean were wearing new t-shirts and jeans, and their skin had a purplish tinge. Almost like they'd been frolicking around in an icy river and needed to change into dry clothes.
"Where the hell have you two been all day?!" Bobby barked.
"Out for a goddamn walk," Castiel said. He'd clearly had another special coffee. Or two.
Rufus pulled up Bobby's chair up to the argument, started eating his shrimp like it was theater popcorn.
"I said I'd handle this," Dean said, trying to mediate. He turned to Bobby. "Whatever it is you think happened-."
"You took him hunting?" Bobby asked, knowing the answer.
"Yeah, we went hunting," Castiel said, as levelly as he could manage. "And I kicked... an ass!"
"It was, like, one demon," Dean lied. "Unplanned."
"And you know what?!" Castiel shouted. "If felt right. I was myself again. Does anyone have a problem with that?!"
Bobby narrowed his eyes at Castiel. "Is he drunk?"
"He's fine," Dean said, "Just needed to take the edge off so I Irish'ed up his coffee a little.
"You gave him coffee?!" Bobby yelled, as if that was a thousand times worse. "Where the hell do you get off?!"
"Just let the man drink his coffee, Bobby," Rufus said.
"Oh, who pushed your button, you troll?!" Bobby shot back.
"You're a grown-ass man," Rufus said to Castiel. "A heavenly veteran who lost his wings fighting against the Apocolypse. If you want a damn cup of coffee, who is he to tell you that you can't have it?"
"Thank you," Castiel said pointedly to Rufus, who he only just realized was there.
"I thought I told you to mind your business!" Bobby snapped at Rufus, then turned back to Castiel. "We had a deal, remember? You swore you were gonna stop hunting."
"Our deal is off," Castiel said. "I can't live like this anymore. I am an Angel of the Lord."
"Were an angel," Bobby said. "Now you're just a mortal shmuck who ain't got the sense of a flat squirrel on the highway. You expect me to keep up my end of the bargain while you run around acting like a jackass?"
"I don't give a damn what you do," Castiel said in the sassiest of tones.
"Well, you better give a damn, 'cause I'm not about to stand by while you try to kill yourself again. It's not happening."
"You think you can stop me from doing what I want?" Castiel said, his voice getting a little bit threatening. "Old man?"
"You gonna let him talk to you like that?" Rufus asked Bobby, gesturing at Castiel with a shrimp.
"Will you get the hell outta here!" Bobby yelled.
"He's showin' out for a reason," Rufus went on. "You been too soft on him. All talk. He doesn't respect you. It's about time you showed him whose house this is. Whoop his ass, Bobby."
"I'm whoopin' someone's ass-."
"Everybody, just calm down," Dean said. "It's not a big deal, okay? Cas had a bad day. Like, real bad. So we went to the mall, ran into trouble on the way back. That's it. It ain't worth fightin' over. Really."
"Troublemaker," Rufus said to Bobby and Castiel. "He's dead three years, now he thinks he can butt into your lives, tell you both how to live."
"Nobody's puttin' nickels in you!" Dean shouted. "Lay off."
Rufus put his hand up. "I don't say a word."

You know the what!
I'm going to go ramble and by the end see how many hashtags I can legitimately shove on it. I like going on long walking because because it's an excuse to get out and you wouldn't believe what kind of loot you can find in the ditches. I've found a leather baseball, a chewed no trespassing sign and two (unfortunately empty) whiskey bottles hell one time my Papa (That's Italian for grampa) found a pair of stereo speakers in a ditch and he hooked them up to his truck and they worked perfectly fine. I love my Papa though he doesn't hear for shit and when he can hear you he ain't listening. I tell you he drives me and Nana (Italian for grampa) up the walls sometimes. My Nana own chihuahuas she currently has 4 there's Peanut the oldest. I like to call him Smelly because he always stinks. Theirs Pinky she always barks when she hears the door open and she doesn't like my Ma for some reason because of that my Ma likes to call her a witch. And finally there's Daisy and Little man. They're Pinky's pups (I choose Daisy's name) they had an older brother Jojo (Yes like the anime I also picked that name) but Nana decided to give him up because he was too big. I still need to finish watching Jojo's bizarre adventure now that I'm thinking about it and beastars too. I wonder if there's any good pirate anime? I've tried watching One piece but I found it boring. Now that I'm thinking about it I should probably also finish watching Hunter X Hunter God I have a lot of anime I need to finish watching. I've also been thinking what counts as anime? Personally anything that's animated and has a "Anime art style" (You know what I'm talking about) as anime but I understand that other people whould be more selective on what classifies as anime. Man talking about anime has got me thinking about ramen. I love ramen if we had tacos or burgers recently because that means thatI can get fancy and take some of the leftover lettuce, onion and tomato and dice it up into my ramen add some garlic powder, soy sauce, some Louisiana hot sauce, crackers and a fried egg oh BOY that's some good eating I tell you what. Speaking of Louisiana hot sauce there's apparently more than one type of Louisiana hot sauce. I like the kind with the yellow label but apparently there's one that seasoned or something it has a deferent labe and it tastes alright I guess. Speaking of hot sauce besides Louisiana I also like Sriracha sauce. I use them for different things. I use Louisiana for things like ramen and chili while I use Sriracha for tacos and burritos. Speaking of tacos and burritos I don't like hardshell tacos they're too messy and soft shell tacos are just an unwrapped burrito. Man I'm getting hungry I think after I, done writing this imma get a midnight snack. Probably a ham and cheese sandwich with mustard and mayo. Speaking of mayo I don't understand why people don't like miracle whip it's delicious and better than regular mayo but my Nana don't like it and only buys it because me and Papa like it. Although I like a lot of things because I've never been a picky eater hell I loved to eat vegetables when I was a kid and I still do. Coleslaw specifically the kind my Mom makes that I wouldn't eat even if you pay me to. I used to think that I didn't like it until last month when my a Nana convinced me to eat some of her slaw and I found out that the reason I hated coleslaw was because my Ma whould put sugar in it. I need to stop talking about food now it's making me more hungry. Um... Oh! I've recently been playing a game called "Epic battle fantasy 4" on new grounds. I remember ebf3 when I was younger; that game was my first introduction to RPGs and to the concept of gun swords. And is probably the only game series where you can say "I had my big tottie mage charm my Nazi so his tactical nuke dose more damage against the bees." And have it make sense in the context of the game. Oh. Apparently I've reached the character limit. Oh well I was running out of ideas anyway. :/

Wep Ronpet Feast
This is what I made for Wep Ronpet this year. I wanted to share in case anyone needed ideas for the next year, and those who are farther north than me, if you needed ideas soon. I think a good amount of these dishes can also be used outside of Wep Ronpet for other offerings or honestly just eaten to be eaten.
Day One - Wesir
I did most of my baking on this day to get going. I think it's okay to give the Netjeru left over offerings, especially if you made the thing for an offering in the first place. I didn't have time, energy, or the space in my stomach to bake a cake for the Netjeru each day, so it worked for the first day.
Honey Cake - I used this recipe, I've made it before and I like it! I didn't put in the orange zest or the almonds because I just wanted the pure honey cake. It's a bit plain, but it feel traditional and I like that.
Bread - This recipe is the one that I used. I've made breads before, but I have a hard time with yeast and making sure it's not too dense, so I went simple. This recipe does require you to start the bread the day before.
Steak - used a small $5 sirloin steak from Kroger that was already prepared with bourbon. I used half for Wesir, cooked it as close to medium rare as I could get
Corn on the cob - used half a cob (and holy cow I didn't realize how hard they are to cut.) Boiled the cob, put butter, chili powder, salt and pepper on it
Beer - I used Blue Moon!
I also danced this day as offering to all of the gods and to get the festival going!
Day Two - Heru-Wer
Honey Cake
Bread and butter
Steak - used the other half!
Corn - used the other half, this time I fried it in the steak grease and added salt and pepper
Beer - Blue Moon again!
Day Three - Sutekh
Honey Cake
Bread and butter
100% Kosher beef hot dog - fried. I offered this to Sutekh with the additional portion of using it as an execration too. It just felt right to me, I'm not sure if it would work for everyone to do this. I made sure I had a Kosher hot dog because then I knew for a fact it wouldn't have any ham. I fried it over the stovetop.
Brussel sprouts, garlic and butter - Got this recipe from another pagan at work! Used roasted garlic (store bought), mashed it, and smeared it over chopped brussel sprouts. Then, I fried it in a pan with butter, salt and pepper.
Beer - Blue Moon
Day Four - Aset
This was the day I had friends over to do execration rituals, so I cooked a great deal more food.
Honey cake
Bread and butter
Thin sliced steaks - Worcestershire sauce, olive oil, salt and pepper for seasoning. I made the mixture in a small glass bowl using however my heart told me to. Then, spread it over the steaks and waited about two hours before I cooked them.
Roasted veggies - For this recipe, you can literally use any veggies you like. I suggest at least using onions, carrots, and squash. I went crazy; onions, carrots, yellow squash, zucchini, sweet potato, russet potato, brussel sprouts, and garlic. Place all chopped vegetables in a bowl and mix with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and garlic cloves. Then you bake at 400 F until everything is nice and crispy. If you're using potatoes, I suggest boiling them for a bit before roasting them with the other veggies to make sure they get soft
Brie cheese - paired with pita chips, wheat thins, strawberries, blackberries, tomatoes and bell peppers.
Wine - did a Moscato and a sweet red, but that's only because of my personal tastes
Day Five - Nebthet
Honey cake
Bread and butter
Wine - this time I used a merlot
By the time that Nebthet's day came, I was pretty tired. I felt like it was a more introspective day and I did not eat as much, so the list of offerings is smaller. I did dance as well to thank the gods and to close the holiday.
