Well I really thought we couldn't get worse with the never-ending nostalgia train and glorification of past decades such as the 50s, 80s and 2000s, but just today I discovered that there's a '#2014 revival' tag with a dedicated following…
2014 Revival!?
2014 Revival!?
2014 Revival!?
Like as in 2014 as in literally just 10 years ago? 2014 is the new mystical era of nostalgia? The year of Tumblr being dominated by annoying memes, never-ending pointless fandom drama, uncredited low-resolution images reposted from Pinterest and the birth of commercialized aesthetics? The year most millennials and Gen Z's were already mature enough to be self-aware? That 2014?

There’s a particular scene in House of Hades that I hate, because alongside just generically being... bleugh. It also doesn’t make any logical sense.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: An excerpt from The House of Hades -
Nico sat forward. ‘I communed with the dead last night.’ He just tossed that line out there, like he was saying he got a text from a buddy. ‘I was able to learn more about what we’ll face,’ Nico continued. ‘In ancient times, the House of Hades was a major site for Greek pilgrims. They would come to speak with the dead and honour their ancestors.’ Leo frowned. ‘Sounds like Día de los Muertos. My Aunt Rosa took that stuff seriously.’ He remembered being dragged by her to the local cemetery in Houston, where they’d clean up their relatives’ gravesites and put out offerings of lemonade, cookies and fresh marigolds. Aunt Rosa would force Leo to stay for a picnic, as if hanging out with dead people were good for his appetite. Frank grunted. ‘Chinese have that, too – ancestor worship, sweeping the graves in the springtime.’ He glanced at Leo. ‘Your Aunt Rosa would’ve got along with my grandmother.’ Leo had a terrifying image of his Aunt Rosa and some old Chinese woman in wrestlers’ outfits, whaling on each other with spiked clubs. ‘Yeah,’ Leo said. ‘I’m sure they would’ve been best buds.’
end ID.]
First and foremost, I hate the trend in HoO of every time particularly one of the Argo 2 Crew reference something culturally-related, they randomly seem to dislike it for no reason or inherently speak about it like they think it’s weird/that they look down upon it. It feels very excessively Suburban White Christian American™ Perspective. I understand why Rick would try to approach discussing those subjects that way, because he’s making an assumption about the audience’s knowledge or preconceived biases about the subjects, but this format just kind of... reinforces that? Rather than challenges it at all? It’s just generally a kind of weird and poor way to go about it and doesn’t work for what he’s trying to do.
And like, that’s the Doylist perspective, but also from a Watsonian perspective it doesn’t make any sense either? Leo lived with his mom until he was like, eight. Are we meant to infer that Esperanza didn’t celebrate Día de Muertos? If that’s the case, why would only one sister celebrate but not the other? And we can’t even presume that maybe the sisters were raised apart or anything, because it’s heavily implied they were close enough that Rosa was very affected by Esperanza’s death - and especially since we’re specifically discussing Día de Muertos, we can presume Rosa would specifically visit Esperanza’s grave. So logically, Leo should have memories of celebrating Día de Muertos with his mother, which would likely be a positive memory/association for him because almost all of his memories of his mother are positive.
And even if we put all that aside, given what we’re told about Rosa and Leo, why would Rosa bring Leo along to celebrate? We’re directly told Rosa wanted nothing to do with Leo and directly blamed him for Esperanza’s death, which is why he ended up in foster care in the first place, yet here we’re told that apparently she was legally responsible for Leo long enough that they celebrated Día de Muertos while he was living with her? And okay, even if we ignore all of that or excuse it somehow; if she blamed Leo for her sister’s death to the point of kicking him out of her house, why should she take him to presumably visit Esperanza’s grave during a very positively-associated holiday?
Like, literally nothing about this makes sense. Either Leo’s family didn’t celebrate Día de Muertos at all, Leo does celebrate Día de Muertos and has positive associations with it, or if he does have any negative associations with Día de Muertos it’d likely be from his aunt actively preventing him from participating or something of the like, which is a whole different can of worms. And all that’s not even getting into the rest of the mess happening in this scene.

This is where I'd put my hot take on the reboot news, if I had one. I already decided I wasn't interested in watching it long ago, so I don't really feel anything, you know?
To all of you who are disappointed, you have my sympathy. To all of you who watch it and enjoy it, I will be happy for you. As for me, I will simply ignore it (unless it's bad in a funny way, then I'll partake in shitposting).

the unfortunate consequence of being in a fandom that's for some reason elected a blorbo you cannot stand is that you can't escape it ever. no amount of filtering will save you from it because people will do their utmost to shove it in your face anyway

One of my least favorite things to happen in fics is when it starts off like: "Will is not like any other man Hannibal has seen before," and then the rest of the fic is Hannibal turning Will (or Will turning himself) into the field of normalcy he wasn't supposed to be a part of in the first place.

Franz started using "natürlich" instead of literally any shorter word. Because while it does mean "of course" it also means "naturally" as in "from nature" which would not be weird if he wasn't also basically a forest wizard.

seeing a post that was made after seeing another post and having the second post remind me of another, completely unrelated third post.... yeah.
#teddy's talk#that one was abt redemption arcs tho. the thing i'm thinking about now is flaws of the author vs flaws of the character#and how some people really need to realise the author's intent DOES matter#like there was this one post i saw abt a character where he misunderstood something another character was going through#in a story that has very clearly set up a narrative where patriarchy is a big problem#like. almost every single female character suffers under it. this is explicitly highlighted several times.#anyway the character misunderstood something another character went through bc he's a guy and despite being kind of outcast#still benefits from being a guy. and the other character had had specific problems *because of* the patriarchal hierarchy.#and he was like 'she hates me bc i'm privileged' which wasn't quite right.#and this person was like yeah the author doesn't quite get it ://#like!!!! no!!!! no that was exactly the point!!!! he's a good and sympathetic guy and the author was trying to show that even HE has trouble#understanding properly bc that's how this kind of stuff tends to work—people who benefit from oppressive systems don't...#fully realise just how bad it gets unless they actually Try to understand. and he's not quite there yet.#my point is. this was clearly supposed to be a character flaw. but this person got clearly upset bc they thought it was an author flaw#or when ppl talk about madoka and completely ignore the original intended message#but that's another can of worms

I think something that a lot of people fail to accept is that.....people need to be treated like human beings regardless of situation. "fat people are ok....if they're healthy" "addicts are okay....if they're successfully recovering" "homeless people are okay.....if they're trying hard enough/they're not addicts/they're not gross" . like none of these conditions take away somebody's humanity. but when you add these "ifs", you do make respecting someone else as a literal fucking person conditional. empathy or just any level of understanding is seen as something that has to be Earned in these situations . and it sounds so simple, even obvious, but then you think about it and it is just a really widespread line of thinking.

it’s wild to me the way a lot of skinny people think weight works like they really genuinely believe that fat people could only be the size they are and continue to exist at that size because they eat “too much” and exercise “too little” and that losing weight is a straight forward process.
like, i started a job last spring that meant i went from getting very little physical activity to typically walking 5-7 miles a day on uneven terrain, carrying shit. My eating habits have remained more or less consistent.
I have not lost weight. My proportions have remained more or less the same. My clothes fit me about the same. I think any fat person would not find this particularly surprising but isn’t calories in calories out the gospel people constantly preach? you’d think dramatically and consistently increasing my physical activity would accomplish this but it obviously didn’t. I am not complaining, changing the size or shape of my body is not a goal of mine, but it’s notable that the actions the medical institutions endorse as ways to achieve that sure don’t actually work.
but while my body has not visibly changed, it’s definitely been great for my health! my mood and energy are significantly better. My resting heart rate dropped by ~10 bpm. I have stronger legs and better stamina. But I do not think anyone would look at me and think of me as someone who lives an “active lifestyle” despite the fact that i do. it’s amazing and depressing to me how many people have bought into the complete lie that you can judge health from appearances and the myth that fat people just lack discipline or someshit

huh, this staff post is pretty much copy-pasted from our internal comms. good to see the transparency.
of course, peoples' gut reactions are coming from a place of ignorance...
"don't implement an algorithm" "the chronological feed is the only reason i'm here"
girl, tumblr has had an algorithm for years now! it's called "Best Stuff First" and you can turn it off in your dashboard settings. but it's not on by default out of malice, or stupidity... it's on by default because it works.
i don't really get it either, personally i hate when any feed or inbox is sorted any way other than purely chronologically. and i can't stand interruptions like recommendations or ads. but my curated experience only works because i put the effort into maintaining it, and most people... don't want to do that.
at no point does that post state that people curating their dashboards is a problem. at no point have i seen any plans, not even any suggestions, to ever drop the chronological dashboard or to stop supporting the curation experience that tumblr offers today.
the stated problem is that a good tumblr experience currently relies on user curation. for every person that "gets it" and winds up like, let's be honest, you or me, someone who's been here for years, there's a hundred other people who didn't get it and decided that twitter is less confusing.

going to scream. when castiel goes bonkers as god, powered-up over 9000, dean gives up on him one hundred and thinks he's no longer there. but sam, the blood-addict, lucifer's vessel, the freak, the one who is supposed to be evil, who has succumbed to 'darkness' here and there, knows, and doesn't. and castiel is still there, and in need of help. and what would have happened had sam not been there.

man i'm on a roll tonight
DP x DC idea:
Bruce Wayne has somehow managed to become the unofficial guardian of at least two more kids. Maybe three. He's not sure yet. Various members of the Batfamily have made new friends recently and have been having them hang out at Wayne manor for extensive periods of time. Now only if he could actually meet the rascals face-to-face, maybe he could adopt them for real.
or
Danny, Elle, and Jazz have all made friends with different Wayne kids at different times from different places. Damian met Elle at school, Danny met Tim while working at a coffee shop, and Jazz met Cass outside the local theater. All three visit the manor separately, and no one communicates that they've befriended people from the same family. Eventually, however, their hangout sessions accidentally overlap and the Waynes have to deal with the excitement of three Fentons under a single roof.
Let's just say there's a reason the three of them live separately.
