been watching GoT lately because I’ve been bored and have nothing to watch, and like. I’m not crazy for feeling like the Battle of the Bastards was just a reverse Battle of Helm’s Deep ripoff, right??? Even some of the camera shots of the horses charging in slow motion felt like a direct lotr take

Oh, hello!
It’s time to replace my original pinned post with a more permanent choice, so here’s the quick, updated scoop on what you can expect here:
I love all things Tolkien and looking at, thinking about, and talking about those things. So I will absolutely reblog your fan art of Thranduil draped across his throne in that sultry pose or like your fic about how Tuor came to love Voronwë as a brother on their long journey to Gondolin. But in my heart, I’ve always been a Rohan kind of girl. That’s where you’re going to find my interest most often drawn, and it’s what I write about almost exclusively (with the very occasional tangent into Haldir-related content, which I understand is totally inconsistent, but the heart wants what the heart wants!).
So, if you could talk about the Eorlingas for hours on end, if Éomer is the Middle Earth king of your dreams, if you find yourself unreasonably attached to minor characters like Háma and Elfhelm or have tons of opinions about how amazing Théodred is, if you’re personally invested in Karl Urban’s dimples …maybe we should be friends! And if you like those things, then maybe you’d get something out of my fics. Or not. Either way is fine!
Those fics are now collected in one place below, which I’ll try to keep updated. I make no claim that they are fine works of literature, but they make me happy and that’s their primary purpose. While they’re all consistent with each other and exist in my unified headcanon, they tend to be one shots based on some particular thing I was interested in–a specific plot point, an unanswered question, a desire to see a certain character grow/develop a certain way. Anyway, you get the idea. So thanks for being here, click through to the master list (such as it is) and FORTH EORLINGAS!
Rohan: (stories in rough in-universe chronological order)
Éomer-focused:
TFW Siblings Prompt: Éowyn is frustrated by Éomer’s attempt to protect her from Wormtongue.
Turning Points: Éomer is back from the war of the ring with a changed worldview and an intention to get married. Includes the first look at the character who becomes his wife.
A Vigilant Eye: A marital scene between Éomer and his wife, Mereliss, focused on Éomer’s stubborn need to never admit weakness. This is as spicy as any of my fics get, which is to say…only very mildly spicy.
A Need of the Soul: Éomer is teaching Faramir how to speak Rohirric as a surprise for Éowyn. Cute brotherly bonding moments, remembrances of Boromir and Théodred and lots of horse talk.
TFW Parent-Child Prompt: Éomer becomes a father for the first time and has lots of feelings about it.
TFW Extended Family Prompt: Éomer’s father in law, Elfhelm, realizes what he means to Éomer in light of the many losses Éomer has already experienced.
The Fire Inside: Éomer is back in Gondor after the war to help with the ongoing clean-up after Sauron, but his life has changed a lot and so have his feelings about battle so he needs Éowyn to help him talk it out.
Nowhere Else: A look back at how Éomer met his wife, told from both sides of the meeting. Includes a look at several other sweet moments from over their years together.
Tumblr media
Théodred and Éomer art by Valeria Salo
Théodred-focused:
TFW Cut Ties Prompt: Traces the unshakable bond forged by shared grief between Théodred and Éomer, enduring all the way to Théodred’s literal last words.
Into the Breach: My most comprehensive look at Théodred the person and his backstory, told in the few days leading up to his death. It's more or less my answer to the question of what Théodred was doing in/around major canon events from LOTR. Part 1. Part 2. Part 3. Part 4.
Ties That Bind: A look at how Wormtongue’s manipulation of Théoden affected the larger royal family, as seen through Éomer’s experience when Théoden had him jailed. Théodred's fiancee is a key element of this fic, so I'm putting it with the other Théodred stories though he's not directly in it.
A Life Interrupted: Éomer reckoning with the death of Théodred. My original story with details of Théodred's life and my HC for him.
Háma-focused:
Tumblr media
Those Worth Fighting For: Family fluff of Háma being a sweet dad to his little girl while shielding her from the reality of the increasing danger posed by Isengard.
TFW Freeform Prompt: Háma and his wife struggle with how to protect their children from the increasing likelihood of war.
Not This Time: The discovery of Háma’s body after the battle of Helm’s Deep has major consequences.
Other Rohirrim:
Tumblr media
TFW Ancestors Prompt: Théoden’s father, Thengel, returns from exile against his will to take up the throne in Rohan.
Untitled intro piece about Guthláf: A short musing on what it means to Guthláf to be Théoden’s banner bearer.
Untitled ficlet on Elfhild: A short intro to Théodred’s mother, who had a premonition she wasn’t going to survive his birth.
Lórien:
Tumblr media
Three Weeks on the Nimrodel: Haldir meets his perfect match while posted for 3 weeks with a substitute marchwarden who understands and appreciates his natural reserve.
The Guardian: Haldir finds a lost and scared little human girl while on patrol in Lórien. Chapter 1. Chapter 2. Chapter 3. Chapter 4. Chapter 5. Epilogue.

'Where is Éomer? Tell him there is no hope ahead. He should return to Edoras before the wolves of Isengard come there.'
Théoden had sat silent, hidden from the man's sight behind his guards; now he urged his horse forward. 'Come, stand before me, Ceorl!' he said. 'I am here. The last host of the Eorlingas has ridden forth. It will not return without battle.'
The man's face lightened with joy and wonder. He drew himself up. Then he knelt, offering his notched sword to the king. 'Command me, lord!' he cried. 'And pardon me! I thought–'
'You thought I remained in Meduseld bent like an old tree under winter snow. So it was when you rode to war. But a west wind has shaken the boughs,' said Théoden. 'Give this man a fresh horse! Let us ride to the help of Erkenbrand!'
This ideal of a truly virtuous king, who inspires so much joy and hope and loyalty in his people even with just his newly unclouded presence, is honestly really moving. We haven't even gotten to the best bits yet. Beside the Hobbits and Éowyn, Théoden's stuff probably makes me cry the most.

For the middle earth asks, I'd like to ask you 🥔 🌟🌙 🧂 ✂ ✨ and 📢, if I may?
Thank you! <33333333
🥔 po-tay-toes: one of the hobbits invited you for a meal; who are dining with? Which of the seven meals are you enjoying? I can't decide between second breakfast with Pippin (nice crispy bacon!), and dinner with Sam (fried fish, lovely golden chips...)
🌟starlight: you're allowed to live in one of the Elf Kingdoms of Middle Earth, which one are you picking? Rivendell, because it's beautiful, secluded, has a great library and is full of most of my favourite characters. Or perhaps the Wood of Green Leaves after the darkness is banished (I cannot be doing with giant spiders...)
🌙 moon runes: which of Tolkien's languages would you most like to speak? Has to be Sindarin, hands down. I know a few words and phrases, but I'd love to be able to have the time to learn it properly and get my head round the grammar.
🧂 best salt in all the shire: which small joys do you most look forward to? (particular tea, using a perfume, rereading a book, etc.) Rereading LotR at the moment is particularly lovely. A nice cold pint in my lovely local pub, preferably with a book and doing some writing.
✂ cutting room floor: of all of the things that didn't quite make it into the movies, what would you have most liked to see? ARWEN'S BROTHERS, what the hell guys. I mean, I know they're yet more characters, and they are a bit of a logistical nightmare, but STILL. (on the other hand, I have a Theory, and one of these days I will make a post to illustrate it...)
✨ evenstar: Who is your favourite middle earth couple? Canon: Aragorn and Arwen, Éowyn and Faramir, and Éomer and Lothíriel. Non-canon: Bard and Thranduil, Legolas and Imrahil. :D :D :D
📢 motivational speech: which film speech do you find most invigorating? Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now, ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending! Death! Death! Death! Forth Eorlingas! (I have a fantastic t-shirt which has Ride for ruin and the world's ending! on the back...)
wheeee, thank you so much for asking! <33333333 Anyone else want to ask me some awesome Middle-Earth questions? (I'll answer tomorrow, I'm off to bed now, zzzzzzzz)

A sketch of Edoras’s architecture by Alan Lee.
forth Eorlingas
Where now are the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing? Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing? Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow; The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning, Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?
Edoras Details Concept Art by Alan Lee
“The travelers entered. Inside it seemed dark and warm after the clear air upon the hill. The hall was long and wide and filled with shadows and half lights; mighty pillars upheld its lofty roof. But here and there bright sunbeams fell in glimmering shafts from the eastern windows, high under the deep eaves. Though the louver in the roof, above the thin wisps of issuing smoke, the sky showed pale and blue. As their eyes changed, the travellers perceived that the floor was paved with stones of many hues; branching runes and strange devices interwined beneath their feet. They saw now that the pillars were richly carved, gleaming dully with gold and half-seen colours.” -The Two Towers, J.R.R. Tolkien

Éomer Headcanons
"They are proud and wilful, but they are true-hearted, generous in thought and in deed; bold but not cruel; wise but unlearned, writing no books but singing many songs, after the manner of the children of Men before the Dark Years [...]. It was in forgotten years long ago that Eorl the Young brought them out of the North, and their kinship is rather with the Bardings of Dale, and with the Beornings of the Wood, among whom may still be seen many men tall and fair, as are the Riders of Rohan." The Two Towers
I love this description on the Eorlingas, for it not only provides us details of their countenance, but also of their kinship with others of Middle-earth. So, let’s get into some of this.
First, on their countenance, of which I have already touched upon a bit here and here, we see  Éomer possess many of the above traits and descriptors. If you want to read more on those traits, please do check out the linked headcanon posts. But I have not yet discussed the descriptors of “writing no books but singing many songs” as applied to Éomer. And so, let’s get into that here...
Éomer, like his kin before him, cannot read or write. This is not a sign of a lack of intellect, only that his wisdom and knowledge (as above described) comes from another source. Oral history is the primary source of his kin, and Éomer holds that in high regard. It was how he learned the way of the world, where he came from, and what may lie ahead for his people. He also heavily associates these songs with his parents, whom he lost when he was 11 years old. Upon the death of his parents, Éomer and Éowyn become the last of their immediate family’s song. As such, there is a heavier weight upon them to carry those songs with them, ere they be forgotten. To Éomer, the songs of his family are a way to keep his parents alive, and he does have this acute understanding in his heart his parents only truly die if he and Éowyn die before passing on their song.
It should also be said that Éomer is quite a good singer. Sometimes, when the Rohirrim is on patrol, he will sing with the other riders, giving a sense of their ancestors riding with them and a driving force to ride forth. Other times, he sings in the night with family for hope and promise. Éomer’s singing voice also calms the horses under his care, especially Firefoot. It has been said that Éomer could still the thunderous hooves of the most distressed horse with his song, for it is in his voice that they hear the future of the Mearas and the Eorlingas and the promise of a Rohan returned to greatness under his eventual rule as King of the Mark.
We also know from the books that they sing during the Rohirrim charge, and their song could not only spur on their numbers and create a sense of unity in their charge, but also evoke a great and terrible fear upon their enemy:
“ And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City.” -Return of the King
Now onto the Eorlingas kinship. The Eorlingas come from the North, and as such, they carry ancestral ties with other Northmen, the Bardings and Beornings. Though we see the alliance between Rohan and Gondor in the series, I also want to stress that Éomer holds alliance to his kin found in the Bardings and Beornings. He stands by and with his kin, and when Éomer is King of the Mark, he strengthens those bonds with the Bardings and Beornings through aid in danger, trade, and fellowship.

3rd Eternal Weekend starts on next week, going to try and make this work for Legacy. Play some side events on Thursday for sure, if it feels too bad I’ll jump ship to Boros Initiative. Also I really want to make room for the 2nd Day's Undoing but probably not worth it. Which is too bad, because I do love playing Narset into "The game is over, I'll find a Forth eventually". If I scrub out of Vintage (very likely, HollowVine is a bit polarizing) then we’ll try for not on Friday.
Decklist:
4 Brainstorm
4 Ponder
1 Dress Down
1 Back to Basics
1 Day’s Undoing

I don't think we appreciate Theoden's speech at Pelannor fields. Like:
"Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! spear shall be shaken, shield shall be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!" The world is ending, we're probobly all gonna die, and the world of men will fall into ruin, ERE THE MOTHERFUCKING SUN RISES. The sun will always come out tomorrow. As long as there's a tomorrow we have hope, we have a chance at redemption, at restoring what was once lost. Ride now, ride now, ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending! Death! Death! Death! Forth Eorlingas! In the face of what seems like an insurmountable obstacle, the Rohirrim charge forth in what they believe will be their last great battle. Because of this hope, they are able to break the siege of Minas Tirith, and reinforce the armies of Gondor. Causing the Armies of Mordor to flee in despair back into their forsaken lands. As long as the sun rises, and its light shines, we will find hope and the strength to overcome the impossible. I kal mí men na- i estel o i Arda. Sina na i anna o eru ilúvatar

TW: incest, abuse
Hi you absolutely do not need to answer this, I feel uncomfortable even asking (bc of the reason behind the question itself, not any fault of yours or bc of you) but can you rec any l/otr & the h0bbit artists who don't draw/support incest ships? It's literally so popular in this fandom and I've been having a really hard time finding people to follow. It's annoying to check out a blog & like their content only to find vis searching their blog that they like incest or are fine with it. I also got into S/ilm later & didnt know much & lost track of a lot of characters so I had the rug pulled out from under me when I realized a lot of s/ilm blogs I followed also shipped things like the fean*rians, & unfollowed them. I've been vocal about hating incest on my blog only for ppl who ship it STILL follow and interact with me. Not only is it gross, but my family has been personally affected by incestuous abuse so its especially abhorrent & upsetting to me and I don't like seeing it at all. I want to curate an experience within this series that I love but I'm finding it damn near impossible.
Finding your blog was a godsend and I feel very safe following you. Again, if you feel uncomfortable with answering its fine, but I thought I'd still let you know I appreciate you vocally opposing things like that, bless you.
Ah man :( I am sorry. I do feel like there should be SOME kind of wider comprehension about the silm fandom especially of just how much incest work there is in it. Very sorry you've had this experience.
I do not know if your consider fingon/maedhros incest so I'm going to list blogs that come to mind that I'm comfortable following and then put an * if they ship Russingon. I might be making mistakes however! I am not really present on the dash enough to know these things for certain.
catadromously does some tolkien stuff but her art is just wonderful in general

on my lunch break being fucking crazy again because i refuse to pack or clean, but:
'Behold! I go forth, and it seems like to be my last riding,' said Théoden. 'I have no child. Théodred my son is slain. I name Éomer my sister-son to be my heir. If neither of us return, then choose a new lord as you will. But to some one I must now entrust my people that I leave behind, to rule them in my place. Which of you will stay?'
No man spoke.
'Is there none whom you would name? In whom do my people trust?'
'In the House of Eorl,' answered Háma.
'But Éomer I cannot spare, nor would he stay,' said the king; 'and he is the last of that House.'
'I said not Éomer,' answered Háma. 'And he is not the last. There is Éowyn, daughter of Éomund, his sister. She is fearless and high-hearted. All love her. Let her be as lord to the Eorlingas, while we are gone.'
Imagine being Éowyn in this scene, though? Like, genuinely imagine facing down that level of disrespect in public by your deadbeat uncle who couldn't keep his ego in check long enough to stop his kingdom from falling apart, and the only person who respects you enough to remember you is the fucking doorman??? Are you kidding me?? No wonder she tries to kill herself, look at how utterly fucking degrading her whole entire life is. Like yeah obviously she's wrong for only seeking out meaning in life via battle but how the fuck else was she meant to distinguish herself in that hellhole? She did everything right in the arenas she was expected to do everything right in and even then nobody could be fucked to remember her. My god, man.

So last night I dreamed the battle of Minas Tirith. Everything’s pretty on point with the film’s take on it. The Riders of Rohan arrive and Theoden is giving his rousing speech as usual, except he has a spear and not a sword. That bit confused me since I was watching it like it was a film. I was not actually a part of the scene or anything.
It gets to the part where he’s chanting DEATH over and over and over, and everyone echoes him in support. And then he goes, “FORTH EORLINGAS!"
“HAAAAA!” (There is no music playing as I watch the scene unfold btw.)
And then Theoden readies his spear and launches it at the Orcs with a loud, “YEET!” The whole army follows with a loud chorus of, “YEET!”
I woke up laughing!

March 2nd
'That, I guess, is the language of the Rohirrim,' said Legolas; 'for it is like to this land itself; rich and rolling in part, and else hard and stern as the mountains.'
Sound as topography <3<3<3 what a beautiful thought
Anyway all between that and 'So men still sing in the evening.' Makes me need to roll away wrapped in my feelings :,]
'Hail, comers from afar!' they said, and they turned the hilts of their swords towards the travellers in token of peace. Green gems flashed in the sunlight. Then one of the guards stepped forward and spoke in the Common Speech.
'I am the Doorward of Théoden,' he said. 'Háma is my name. Here I must bid you lay aside your weapons before you enter.'
IT'S HÁMA TIME!!!!
'If I may not lean on my stick as I go, then I will sit out here, until it pleases Théoden to hobble out himself to speak with me.'
You cheeky, grumping ass Gandalf ilysm
Suddenly through a rent in the clouds behind them a shaft of sun stabbed down. The falling showers gleamed like silver, and far away the river glittered like a shimmering glass.
'It is not so dark here,' said Théoden.
Where's that picture of the wobbly crying creature bc that's me rn and honestly for the rest of today
Suddenly he lifted the blade and swung it shimmering and whistling in the air. Then he gave a great cry. His voice rang clear as he chanted in the tongue of Rohan a call to arms.
Arise now, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Dire deeds awake, dark is it eastward.
Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!
Forth Eorlingas!
Yeah
'Westu Théoden hál!' cried Éomer. 'It is a joy to us to see you return into your own. Never again shall it be said, Gandalf, that you come only with grief!'
Y eah
Alone Éowyn stood before the doors of the house at the stair's head; the sword was set upright before her, and her hands were laid upon the hilt. She was clad now in mail and shone like silver in the sun.
🌼🤍🤍🤍🤍🌼🤍🤍🤍🤍🌼
'It shall be so,' said Éomer. 'Legolas upon my left, and Aragorn upon my right, and none will dare to stand before us!'
I'm imagining them as a boy band
The cursed horse boys
'Were the breath of the West Wind to take a body visible, even so would it appear,' said Éomer, as the great horse ran up
