I know we all agree that Howard was a shitty father but what’s your thoughts on Maria as a mother? I know we’ve seen nothing from her/her parenting but doesn’t it say a lot that she stayed in a marriage even tho her child was abused and neglected. I think she stayed for money reasons and that sucks
I was gonna let this sit for a hot minute to work on homework, but I am not gonna be able to think about anything else. SO. Thinking with the MCU because that's the canon I'm familiar with; comic and cartoon fans, feel free to have thoughts in the notes.
Firstly, important to point out that, like you said, we know very little about Maria as a mother and as a person. What we do know is indirect; we don't really see her parenting Tony, we just see bits and snippets of Tony's opinions and memories of her; she exists almost entirely in the negative space of her son. So there are probably a hundred different interpretations of her one can get from canon, and not be strictly more or less wrong than anyone else.
I do think it's unfair to immediately conclude that she stayed with her husband for money. We don't know about her personal financial situation, whether or not she had any money or her own, and what her perspectives on finances and divorce were. So while I won't say it wasn't a possibility, I don't think we can cleanly conclude this is what happened based on canon.
Second, we know more about Howard - we know that he was at best neglectful towards Tony (particularly emotionally), at worst physically abusive (based on a comic directly related to and inspired by the movies, which, admittedly, I have not read in full). We know also that Tony had a lot of complicated emotions towards his father, which is not strange or uncommon in abusive relationships. Abusive people aren't abusive all the time because they know no one would put up with them forever otherwise. "The cycle of abuse" exists for a reason. Add to that Howard's death, and I think as the movies get on (*cough* and as the writers showed less and less of an understanding of Tony and his relationships *cough*) Tony gains more of a rosy view of Howard that Howard himself does not earn, which also complicates things.
Third - On the other hand, I don't think Tony ever really says anything negative about Maria, even in the earlier movies when the writers didn't romanticize abusers. In fact, given his memories of her in Civil War and his line "He [Bucky] killed my mom", I would say he probably had a pretty close relationship with his mom, or at least better than he had with Howard. So I don't think she was abusive towards Tony.
So, fourth: why did Maria stay with Howard? Sadly, there are a lot of reasons people stay with abusers even when it becomes clear what they are, and one of those reasons is that it is often more dangerous to leave. Abusers are likely to become violent, even deadly; they stalk their victims, make it so they feel like there's no safe place to go, and often there isn't. Situations are further complicated by children - now, they have to try to protect another, defenseless person as well as themselves. Keep in mind also that an abused partner is likely to not have close relationships outside of their spouse precisely because an abuser will do everything they can to isolate their victim. (This is also one of the reasons why victims often are not believed - the only people they can tell are those who've been hand-selected by their abuser, who are friendly with them, who see that abuser as a "good guy" who would never do the things you said!)
Even if we assume Howard was never physically abusive towards Tony and Maria - even if he was never directly abusive to Maria herself - he was extremely rich, with close ties to SHIELD, making him a VERY powerful man. If she tried to leave, what power would she have to protect her son? With his resources, it would probably not have been difficult for him to get complete custody, even if just to punish her for leaving, or to keep as much control as he could over his son. I interpret Maria as someone who was likely a victim of abuse herself, and truly loved her son, and tried to protect and care him. Whether or not she was able to do so was not a reflection on the victim, but the abuser.

Unholy Matrimony 1
Summary: When Tim Drake presents as an omega, his parents decide to get the only use they can out of him by marrying him off. To Bruce Wayne.
Tim’s head spun as he closed the door behind him and dragged himself the remaining distance to his bed. It almost seemed like too much effort, since he had a perfectly hospitable pile of dirty laundry right… everywhere, and he would be perfectly comfortable on the floor.
Mom and Dad are coming in tomorrow, though, he reminded himself. His parents, especially his mother, wouldn’t abide by him sleeping on the floor because he was too sick to get all the way to his perfectly serviceable bed.
He dropped face-first onto his mattress with a groan. Was it really worth the effort of turning his face? At least suffocating would put him out of his misery.
It had been a mistake not to come home immediately when he’d started to feel bad, but the Gotham night sky had been such a perfect aesthetic, and Tim had wanted to see if Robin was going to turn up and join Batman. He hadn’t for a few days, but Tim hadn’t seen him get injured, and normally Robin helped Batman every night during the summer. In the end, it had cost him a grueling walk to the bus station once he’d finally realized that he was seriously getting sick, and another grueling walk from the bus station to his house.
He did, eventually, roll onto his side and pull off his camera bag, which landed with a padded thud on the floor next to him, before drifting off to sleep.
Tim was snatched roughly from sleep and his bed by strong hands. The world spun in a fog of blurry shapes and the scent of angry alpha, and a haze of an unfamiliar sweet smell. The biggest blur in front of him shook him furiously.
“What the hell is this!”
Tim blinked a few times to clear his vision, stunned to find his father dangling him by the collar of his night photography hoody he’d fallen asleep in.
“A jacket?” Tim mumbled sleepily.
Jack Drake snarled in a rage and threw Tim to the floor. Tim landed hard, his fall cushioned unevenly by discarded clothes.
Tim inhaled sharply and willed himself to wake up faster. Usually, he knew what he’d done to make his parents hate him, but this time, he was too thrown off by exhaustion, and the pain in his gut, and that overpowering stench of honey that seemed to cling to him. In fact, everything smelled more strongly than normal. His father’s fury, his own fear, and the normally slight smell of beta disappointment that wafted in strong enough to alert him to the presence of Janet Drake in the doorway.
“I told you he was never going to be an alpha,” his mother snapped, not even looking at him.
Tim winced at the anger and dismissal in her voice, and his own confusion, because nothing made sense and he couldn’t understand what was going on or why they were mad, or why everything hurt. He just wanted to curl up in a small, dark place and hide. And what was that smell?
That sweet honey…
Omega.
Where had that come from? Neither of his parents were omegas, so who-
No.
No, no, no, no, no!
It was him.
Tim’s heart pounded, and he tried to stand up, but Jack kicked him in the ribs.
“Thirteen years, raising you, feeding you, educating you, wasted! You’re fucking useless!” Jack seized a fistful of Tim’s shirt and slammed him against the wall. “What the fuck am I supposed to do with an omega for an heir, you stupid bitch!”
“I-” Tim started. His eyes stung fiercely, but his parents would be even more furious if he started crying too. He was an omega?
Tim couldn’t be an omega. He’d heard the vitrious gossip and spite his parents had for omegas for years; how useless and pathetic they were, flighty whores ruled by their pendulum mood swings. Tim was pretty sure that he wasn’t those things, or maybe he was a bit useless, but he tried his best. The thought of being just an omega to his parents was terrifying. Omegas didn’t even have full rights.
“You-” Jack raised his fist and Tim flinched, hard, waiting for the blow.
Janet moved from her spot at the door with an air of utter contempt. “Jack, dear, don’t hurt him.”
Tim frowned, unable to reconcile her tone with her words. Janet Drake had never been a very maternal woman. She read him financial reports instead of bedtime stories, and had started teaching him how to manipulate his business rivals by the time he was five years old, but maybe, in her own way, she did care about him, and she just had a strange way of showing it.
His heart swelled in hope. If some kind of dormant maternal instincts had been awoken, seeing her pup in danger, she might save him before his dad beat him too much, even if he was a disappointment.
“He might be completely useless as an heir, but there are other uses for an omega in the business world, Jack.”
Tim’s hope withered and died with a pain worse than his father’s kick, and this time he couldn’t blink back the tears. “Mom?”
She locked eyes with him just long enough for her lip to curl in distaste.
Her eyes flicked to Jack and pointedly stayed there. “He’s worth less to us if you break him. Set him down.”
Jack growled unhappily, but he gave Tim a final shake before dropping his shirt.
Tim’s knees crumpled under his weight, and he collapsed in a barely controlled fall. Tears streamed down his face, no matter how hard he tried to stop. This was so stupid, why couldn’t he stop? He was acting just like the omegas that his parents hated so much, and his own body was betraying him, because it wouldn’t let him stop crying like a baby or an omega.
“I’m sorry,” Tim whimpered.
“Don’t grovel,” Janet said, her voice even and businesslike. “You might be an omega, but you’re still a Drake. Act like it.”
Tim swiped at his face with his sleeve and didn’t sniffle. He lowered his gaze so they couldn’t see his face. She was right; falling apart like this was a weakness, and Drakes weren’t weak.
“I’m sorry, mother. I didn’t mean to be-”
“What you meant doesn’t matter. Only what you are,” Janet interrupted. “You might be a lost cause as an heir, but there are still…possibilities. You can still redeem yourself.”
Tim slowly raised his head so that he could bare his neck in submission. If he just behaved well enough, then they’d eave on their next grand adventure and forget about him for the next six months. He just had to placate them for the rest of their visit. They might pull him out of school, but he could maybe enroll himself in an online school without them knowing.
“Anything, mother,” he whispered.
Jack glared at his wife, a question in his scowl. “What are you thinking, Jan?”
Janet raised her chin and smirked slightly. “I think that I’ve solved the problem we’ve been having with our…less cooperative business partner.”
Realization dawned on Jack’s face and settled into a vicious grin. “I see. How thoughtful of you.”
Dread curdled in Tim’s stomach. He wasn’t any use to them as an heir anymore. If they wanted him to deal with a business partner who was giving them trouble- Surely they cared more about him than that. They wouldn’t rent him out to solve their problems.
They wouldn’t.
They would.
He knew it, just like he knew that the sky was blue and Bruce Wayne had poor coping mechanisms.
He wouldn’t let them. He’d run before he let anyone touch him like that. He’d never submit.
But he didn’t have a choice. He couldn’t run from them. They had too much money; they’d find him wherever he went, and even if they didn’t, could he really survive alone on the streets of Gotham? He was helpless.
“I’ll set up a meeting. Do you think he’ll accept, though?” Jack asked, stepping towards his wife as though his son on the floor was nothing but a broken toy.
“He has a different omega on his arm at every gala. Clearly, he likes their company quite a bit. He’ll certainly accept a bride who cannot deny him, even if he tried,” Janet said coolly.
Tim shuddered and tried to hide his tears. She wanted to give him to someone she knew would rape him, someone he couldn’t escape. How- She was his mother! He knew that she didn’t love him, but couldn’t she care just a bit?
“I’m being sold?” He tried to say it calmly, confidently, but his voice broke into a strangled whimper.
His mother scoffed at him without even looking down. “Of course. There’s no other use for an omega. You’ll submit to your husband like a good whore, and your pack will benefit. This is your responsibility.”
“Wh-who?” Tim couldn’t choke out the rest of the sentence. Who had they decided would rape him?
His father crossed his arms. “You’re going to marry Bruce Wayne.”

The best and worst films of 2020
Tumblr media
Let’s be honest - 2020 was an extremely shitty year for moviegoers everywhere, as the Queen would say an annus horribilis.
Due to the Covid pandemic’s dramatic impact on nearly every facet of human life, cinemas closed, film festivals went virtual and film productions became an intricate mess of insurance and safety challenges.
Yet despite these dire challenges and an unpredictable future, cinema remained very much alive throughout the year, with a wide range of ambitious undertakings snaking their way into whatever form of release seemed viable. Blockbusters receded to the background, allowing a wide range of movies to trickle through an uncertain marketplace that would have been hostile to them even in pre-pandemic times.
So what cinematic gems and unmitigated disasters were dropped upon audiences during the year?
Ladies and gentlemen, may we please offer for your consideration...
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
THE CURRENT WAR - THE LIGHTHOUSE - IN FABRIC - BEING FRANK: THE CHRIS SIEVEY STORY (D) - BOMBSHELL - THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON - THE SOCIAL DILEMMA (D) - LIGHT OF MY LIFE - THE ASSISTANT - THE LODGE - THE GENTLEMEN - THE WAY BACK - DARK WATERS - 1917 - THE BURNT ORANGE HERESY - THE HUNT
2020′S TOP TEN BEST FILMS
Tumblr media
10. THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW
Hot off the critical success of his debut feature ‘Thunder Road,’ writer-director Jim Cummings’ refreshing yet effective take on the werewolf genre amped up the dark comedy whilst delivering quite a few chills. Tinged with realistically flawed characters and clever scares, ‘The Wolf of Snow Hollow’ might not have been your typical werewolf flick but it successfully managed to bring that classic legend to life once again.
Tumblr media
9. LET HIM GO
Previously last seen together as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents in ‘Man of Steel,’ Diane Lane and Kevin Costner were reunited onscreen as husband and wife again in writer-director Thomas Bezucha’s neo-Western drama ‘Let Him Go.’ Adapted from author Larry Watson’s 2013 novel, the film featured stunning landscapes, full-blooded moments of sudden violence and compelling performances from Diane Lane, Kevin Costner and, most memorably, Lesley Manville’s turn as a gritty and cunning matriarch.
Tumblr media
8. COLOUR OUT OF SPACE
Based on the classic short story by HP Lovecraft and featuring another scene-stealing performance from Nicolas Cage, this clever adaptation was an effective horror film with an unrelentingly grim sci-fi bent. In addition to the truly disturbing and inspired images of queasy body horror, ‘Colour Out of Space’ also marked the eagerly-anticipated re-emergence of filmmaker Richard Stanley (his first time back in the director’s chair since being fired from his 1996 remake ‘The Island of Dr Moreau’).
Tumblr media
7. THE INVISIBLE MAN
Who knew a remake could be so refreshing? With this updated take on the H.G. Wells tale, writer-director Leigh Whannell did just about everything right, delivering a tense, clever thriller with touches of both horror and sci-fi. As the fascinatingly flawed yet appealing tough protagonist, Elisabeth Moss gave a captivating performance in a film that was chilling in all the right ways, packed with plenty of twists and a deliciously nasty resolution.
Tumblr media
6. THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 (NETFLIX)
Whilst the subject matter of ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7′ shared an uncanny relevance to today’s politically charged times, as a gripping courtroom drama with a stellar cast, the film ticked all the boxes. ‘West Wing’ creator Aaron Sorkin put his trademark traits - razor-sharp wit, rhetorical flair and political insight - to very good use in this masterful retelling of the trial following the 1968 anti-war protests outside the Democratic National Convention.
Tumblr media
5. HEARTS AND BONES
In his debut feature film, Australian director Ben Lawrence created a spiritually rich and immersive drama about the relationship between a grizzled, broken war photographer and a Sudanese refugee. Whilst Hugo Weaving was note-perfect in his portrayal as a crumbling man wrestling with his past, equally impressive was first time actor Andrew Luri who delivered a quiet yet memorable performance in what was an affecting piece of cinema.
Tumblr media
4. TOTALLY UNDER CONTROL (DOCUMENTARY)
Watching a documentary about the COVID-19 crisis in the middle of a global pandemic might not sound appealing but prolific filmmaker Alex Gibney’s latest work was easily the most essential non-fiction film of 2020. Shot safely in secret for five months, ‘Totally Under Control’ played out like a tightly-wound thriller as it placed the Trump Administration’s inept response to the coronavirus pandemic under the microscope.
Tumblr media
3. BAD EDUCATION (HBO)
As far as crime stories go, embezzlement isn’t always the most thrilling subject. However, ‘Bad Education’ turned a relatively simple white collar crime story about a New Jersey school administrator caught stealing money into a compelling drama, thanks to an incisive and nimble script and spot on performances from Allison Janney, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ray Romano and especially Hugh Jackman.
Tumblr media
2. MANK (NETFLIX)
Director David Finch’s dazzling portrait of Herman J. ‘Mank’ Mankiewicz, the screenwriter who collaborated with wunderkind filmmaker Orson Welles to write the first draft of ‘Citizen Kane,’ was a cinematic jewel from start to finish. Similar to last year’s ‘Once Upon A Time in...Hollywood,’ ‘Mank’ delivered a layered depiction of the filmmaking process, whilst Gary Oldman continued to excel at immersing himself in playing real-life characters, this time as the hard-drinking, intellectual screenwriter.
Tumblr media
1. NOMADLAND
Writer-director Chloe Zhao’s intimate drama about an unemployed widow living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad was a thoughtful, contemplative and reflective piece of storytelling. It may have touched upon mature themes about loneliness, financial instability and restlessness, but ‘Nomadland’ remained an uplifting and hopeful piece of cinema that captured the various bittersweet reasons people choose to live a life on the road.
With an outstanding performance from Frances McDormand, brought to life through the charm of the ‘real life’ supporting cast, great direction and Joshua James Richard’s mesmerising cinematography, ‘Nomadland’ was the perfect film for 2020.
...AND NOW THE WORST!
DISHONOURABLE MENTIONS
VAMPIRES VS THE BRONX - BAD BOYS FOR LIFE - THE OLD GUARD - PROJECT POWER - ISN’T IT ROMANTIC - THE RHYTHM SECTION - WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE - I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS - MIDWAY - YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT - BABY DONE - FORCE OF NATURE - CAPONE - THE NEW MUTANTS - DOOLITTLE
Tumblr media
10. WONDER WOMAN 1984
To quote Red Letter Media’s resident film critic Mike Stoklasa, “this movie was the cinematic equivalent of the Bluesmobile.” Directed by Patty Jenkins, this 80′s-set sequel to the 2017 DC superhero hit was lethargically paced and featured a completely bonkers narrative that made absolutely no sense. Horribly scripted, disjointed and overstuffed (a runtime of 2.5 hours), ‘Wonder Woman 1984′ sadly jettisoned everything that made Jenkins’ original film so compelling. The result? An appalling misfire.
Tumblr media
9. THE GRUDGE
A curiously talented and interesting cast were somehow lured into - and subsequently wasted in - this pointless, tired, reboot/revival of the long-running ‘Ju-On’ Japanese-based horror series. Despite director NIcholas Pesce’s attempt to disguise the rudimentary nature of the plot via back-and-forth timeline jumping, ‘The Grudge’ was just a formulaic paint-by-the-numbers meander through a poorly developed story that existed only to prop up a bunch of uninspired jump scares.
Tumblr media
8. BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN)
There are many movies that have no reason to exist - and this latest misfire from DC Comics was one of them. Directed by Cathy Yan, ‘Birds of Prey’ was a mire of uninspired ideas and recycled genre conventions that got old real quick. Penned by Christina Hodson (’Bumblebee’ being the ‘highlight’ on her resume), the script was as simplistic as it was thin, with needless subplots merely introduced to inflate the film to a decent running time. Even Margot Robbie’s manic performance as the ‘Mistress of Mayhem’ couldn’t save this mess.
Tumblr media
7. JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT
What could’ve been a dream film for fans of these two classic stoner characters instead was nothing but a string of cameos and callbacks in a plot-less bore. Director Kevin Smith sucked all the life and fun out of this watered-down story, that suffered from a constant series of awkward and forced jokes that were painfully unfunny. An unfortunate stinker.
Tumblr media
6. AVA
This latest foray into the ‘female assassin for hire’ genre was about as cliched as you could get. An emotionally troubled female killer whose male mentor assumes the role of the surrogate father? Check. Pounding dance music score? Check. Obligatory nightclub fight sequence? Check. Confused love interest? You betcha! Humourless, dry and uninspired, ‘Ava’ played out like a poor man’s ‘La Femme Nikita.’
Tumblr media
5. FANTASY ISLAND
Hollywood’s obsession with repackaging Gen-X childhoods continued with this absurd attempt to reboot the classic 1970′s TV series as a low-budget horror joint under the Blumhouse label. At a dangerously close two hour runtime, there was simply nothing interesting about the film’s characters or its inane plot about a mystical island that grants wishes (a’la ‘The Monkey’s Paw’). Our advice? Turn ‘de plane’ around if you ever plan to visit this ‘Fantasy Island.’
Tumblr media
4. ARTEMIS FOWL
For every ‘Harry Potter’ that explodes into the public consciousness, there always seems to be a dozen or more failed franchises. Sadly, Disney’s ‘Artemis Fowl’ found itself in the latter category. Director Kenneth Branagh’s dull and superficial attempt to transfer this popular children’s book series from page to screen suffered from a lack of character development, an over-reliance in CG effects and featured a lifeless performance from newcomer Ferdia Shaw as the titular character.
Tumblr media
3. HUBIE HALLOWEEN (NETFLIX)
A month before last year’s Oscar nominations were released, Adam Sandler joked on ‘The Howard Stern Show’ that if the Academy snubbed him for his role in the film ‘Uncut Gems,’ he would make a movie “that [was] so bad on purpose.” And that’s exactly what happened. Supposedly a comedy, ‘Hubie Halloween’ was unfunny, disposable and completely devoid of any originality. Sadly for audiences, Sandler signed a four-movie deal with Netflix last year, worth up to $275 million - so we can expect to see more of this shit soon!
Tumblr media
2. ALIEN ADDICTION
Aliens visit New Zealand and get high smoking human faeces? Someone should have advised Kiwi director Shae Sterling that audiences have moved on from such puerile comedies as this abomination. Suffice to say, if anybody ever admitted to finding this film remotely funny, they’d probably be outcast from society. An embarrassment to all those involved.
Tumblr media
1. THE BEACH BUM
Director Harmony Korine’s generic stoner comedy about a prolific poet who drifts through life in a drug-induced haze had all the natural high of an unfiltered, soggy joint and was easily, hands down, 2020′s worst film.
‘The Beach Bum’ was a pretentious and uninteresting movie whose lead character, considered to be an ‘artistic genius,’ was nothing more than a relentless shithead to everyone around him. As Moondog, the semi-naked, bongo-playing, pot-fuelled beat poet, Matthew McConaughey was insufferable and grating in his portrayal of a character you would quite easily want to punch in the face - repeatedly. Blazed and confused, ‘The Beach Bum’ had no plot, no class and no entertainment value whatsoever.
MOVIE POSTERS
From the classic to the abstract, here is just a sample of some of the best poster designs from a highly unusual year of movies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...AND FINALLY, WHEN WHEN IT COMES TO DIRE-LOG, THEY SAID WHAT!?
Tumblr media
“I've never wanted anything more. But he's gone, and that's the truth. And everything has a price. One I'm not willing to pay. Not any more. This world was a beautiful place, just as it was, and you cannot have it all. You can only have the truth. And the truth is enough. The truth is beautiful” (’Wonder Woman 1984′).
And who could forget this little chestnut of advice...
“That is the only truth and truth is all there is. You cannot be the winner because you are not ready to win. And there is no shame in that. Only in knowing the truth in your heart and not accepting it. No true hero is born from lies” (’Wonder Woman 1984′).

So a brief story about Second Wave Feminism
Second wave feminism came out of women needing financial independence to leave abusive husbands. My grandma literally ran an illegal daycare in her house to make sure my alcoholic grandpa didn’t drink all the cash.
Yes, feminism has problems with whiteness. And antiracist spaces and labor movements have problems with sexism. My Mexican grandpa didn’t give a shit that my grandma was Mexican too. He abused her and his kids and his older granddaughters all the same. He stole money for drinks, he wouldn’t let his daughters go to college, he beat his older boys, he verbally abused the entire household, he made my grandma his personal slave. Does this mean I trash labor movements and antiracist spaces, because they didn’t protect my family by protecting his rights? No, of course not.
Each movement makes sure we can survive today in different ways. Feminism made it legal for women to own their own money to get their own living spaces, no-fault divorces, the ability to even hold a job.
This is all to leave abusive spouses’ control, not because (white) women decided they were tired of taking care of kids and needed a dream job.
Even the white women who left their kids at my grandma’s house never did it because “taking care of kids was the dirty work for the WOC.” They were doing it because they could now get those 8-5 jobs that would give them financial independence, and leaving their kids with my grandma gave her cash my grandpa couldn’t get to. Childcare is not of lesser importance than stenography. And it meant my grandma didn’t face sexual harassment from creepy men hitting on their secretaries. All women need financial independence.
Workplace equity plays into this, equitable pay plays into this. Do we tell people to stop caring about micro-aggressions because assault and hate crimes occur? No, because we know they are interconnected. A woman who makes less money than she is owed is a woman who will struggle to get financial independence.
The idea that second wave feminism came about so white ladies could get dream jobs while the WOC were trapped with babies plays into the cult of work and capitalism that paints childrearing as a thankless automatic task. Child-rearing isn’t for everyone, of course, and nobody should have an unwanted baby (and you know what came out of second wave feminism? that plays into financial independence? birth control and reproductive freedom).
To say second wave feminism was just about white ladies wanting cool jobs forgets the physical danger patriarchy puts on women who don’t have a trustworthy source of income.
It’s not feminism’s fault for the problems WOC face. If Latinas still make 54 cents per each white woman’s 77 cents (and more important, each white man’s full whole dollar), then that is also a problem the labor movement and antiracist movements also need to address, not feminism’s cross to bear alone. Feminism is not the dump-all-your-problems-with-social-justice-here movement. Feminism is about the liberation of women from men’s control. Feminism intersects with these other issues. But feminism is not responsible for Karens, that is patriarchal whiteness.
Second wave feminism allowed my mother to work at Meijers so she could go to college and get a degree and an engineering job and take her baby the hell away from her abusive father’s house, and I am scared by how quickly women throw feminism under the bus, as if the labor movement and antiracism movements will ever #SayHerName or notice that domestic work and service work deserve fancy unions and pensions just like manufacturing jobs without a unifying force behind us.

The moment i realized my own mother was a failure of a human.
[Warning: the following is a rant.] so, i’m mostly screaming this to the void of tumblr, but i need to get this off of my chest. I realized over the past week that my mother, the woman who gave birth to me, is an utter failure as a mother, a daughter, and a human being. Background: I come from a toxic home. The main culprit is my biological father Charles. He’s everything that is toxic masculinity rolled into one trashbag and given a massive paycheck. Since i was born, i have lived in fear of him. He put holes in walls with fists and feet, smashed tables, chairs, lights, and couches with bare hands. He can and has hurled engine blocks across the garage, smashed a window with a digger, thrown a crowbar down the hall, and taken a belt to my ass so much that i couldn’t sleep for three nights.  And he used his strength in conjunction with his financial wealth to rule the house with an iron fist. It was his house, his rules, his internet, his this and that and blah blah blah. Everything was his even if you bought it with your own money. Once, he decided it was a suitable punishment for not paying attention to take my Nintendo SP, a gift from my recently deceased great grand mother, and throw it into the wall to smash it to pieces.
i can recite a list of incidents that could fill up a 50 page book just from memory, which is sad since i have memory issues, and have forgotten even more. But on Sunday, i learned a new truth about my family: My mother is an accomplice to all his actions.  It never fully dawned on me until she called me, mid day, to inform me that a week earlier my elderly grandmother had gotten into an argument with my dad, and became so desperate to get out that she got in her electric scooter (she cant walk anymore) and try to drive away. if she hadn’t gotten stuck in a ditch just outside, she would be missing today because my father would have watched her leave without a care in the world. Unfortunately, in getting out of the ditch thanks to the local police and fire department, she tried to drive up the driveway unattended since my father wouldn’t come down to help her as he was too angry with her. She fell into another ditch, gashing her leg wide open. She has been in the hospital for a few days now, with a nasty infection in the muscle tissue of her leg and foot.  and my mother, the woman who raised me, who gave birth to me, who’s job it was to protect me from the moment i came into this world, had the fucking audacity to try to paint it as my grandmother’s fault. Why? because my grandma yelled at my grandpa.  See, he has a rapid form of Dementia, which at this point has left him a husk of his former self. for the longest time he was the one who took care of grandma. It came on quickly, and robbed him. Now he cannot function, and Grandma needs someone besides my asshole of a father to do things for her cause she’s got a decaying spine and severe arthritis. So without a family beyond me and a cousin to confide in, and no support network to speak of, she lashes out sometimes. she needs help. What’s he do? Decides to yell at her for yelling at grandpa. And he gets mean. He’ll attack any vulnerability he can find to win. He’s savage, and he’s attacking an old woman verbally. He also locked her out of the house when she left! So ya. She’s sitting there, telling me it’s grandma’s fault she’s practically dead, with a horrible infection that could go Sepsis at any time and weak kidneys that cant fight that off.  I know my grandma. i cared for her on my own for a year. i listened to the bullshit everyone had about her. And she tries to claim she’s doing her best. And that’s when it hit me. She’s not going after my dad for yelling at my grandma and driving her out of the house... She’s going after my grandma. She chose her fucking deadbeat, abusive, manipulative, volatile husband over her own fucking mother, who she PROMISED to care for.  And she thinks, in some twisted way, that i will side with her on it. She didn’t even have the fucking guts to tell me WHEN IT HAPPENED.  She’s allowed my dad to abuse my grandma verbally... And she allowed him to abuse me. my brother. my sister. Thats why we all left when we had the chance. My sister got knocked up by a guy she barely knew at 16 and took the chance to bail on my mom and dad, because she knew mom couldn’t protect her. Mom’s promises are empty hollow lies because she doesn’t have the guts to stand up to my dad. My brother tried to leave at 24, planning for years until he had enough friends in on a plan to move out together. the only reason he moved back in was because his dead beat girlfriend (now ex-wife because she decided after literally 11 months of marriage that she didn’t love him!) was bleeding cash all over the place and left him poor.  And me? When my friend i didn’t very well like invited me to move in with him in new york, i fucking took it. It was only because the other two roommates bailed on us and i wasn’t able to cover their fucking debts after i lost my job due to illness that i moved back to my parents. At which point when the offer to care for my grandma came up, i fucking threw myself at the chance.  It was because we all knew that house was unsafe so long as Charles lives in it, and we all knew deep down my mom’s promises that he will change and her constant “he’s made such improvements” were the ramblings of an abuse victim who’s so delusional that she honestly believes it’s better to live in a house where getting beaten, threatened, yelled at, and having personal belongings at constant risk of being destroyed then to live poor but safe.  Six years ago i ran away from home. I ended up trapped at a local library, hiding from a storm because i couldn’t take my father’s abuse anymore. She came to me there, and begged me to return home. She promised me that if he ever shouted or threatened or hurt me again, she’d divorce him on the spot. She lied to me.  I endured five years of additional abuse on-top of my already long list. i could make entire classes of childcare or social communications students turn white with just a few stories of what he did to me. My therapist asked me why i never called child protective services on him as a kid, and it occurred to me because i was taught by media and other families at the time that being abused like that was fine.  And now he’s abusing my grandma. He’s threatening her life. And my mom just sits there and lets him. She does nothing but justify in her own twisted mind that incurring his wrath is somehow our own fault for not keeping out of his way, as if it was possible to know what was in and out of his fucking way. And as i write this, i realize the real reason i’m upset with her. She is an abuse victim like the rest of us, and deserves some understanding... But that ends when you let others get abused by them. She knows he’s cruel. she knows he’s unhinged. she knows he’s volatile and savage. And she WILLINGLY brought my grandmother into that home, putting her in danger after lying to her about the house.  And for that, i cant forgive her. I will never forgive her. She let him hurt everyone, and just sat there. She couldn’t even run away. Right now, he’s jobless because of covid19. she has a job with the local police as dispatch. She has the power in their relationship for once. And she lets him have control.
I’m tired and full of hatred. How can a mother let this happen to her family? Why? i will never respect her again. I will never listen to her again. And when she grows old and needs help like my grandma does, i will not sully my life to accommodate her when she couldn’t be bothered to protect her kids or parents from him. ... how sad is this? At least for now, i feel a bit better. If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading. I’m gonna go play some games and not spiral anymore. goodnight everyone!

Save the Girl
Title:  Save the Girl
Author: tiddly-winx
Fandom: The Dirt (Motley Crue)
Summary: The reader is getting married to her fiancee Jerry and Tommy has feelings for her, but thinks that she's happy with Jerry so he doesn't say anything.  Looks can be deceiving though.
Warning: Domestic abuse mention, swearing, fluff.  If any of these makes you uncomfortable please don't read.
Things were all ready for the wedding, just a few weeks away.  You were happy to be marrying Jerry, the love of your life.  He had his moments, but he was only human.  We all have our faults, like you couldn't cook for shit or do housework correctly.  Of course, you'd never even thought of doing housework when you were going to university for finance.  You were the top of your class, graduating valedictorian will a full ride to the best business school in the country.  Then you met Jerry and everything changed.
He told you of all the things he'd do for you when your first got together- get a job so you'd never have to work, stay home and take care of the house and eventual children.  That seemed like a beautiful dream, then he started doing things to hinder your chances at being your own person.  Like hiding your acceptance letter from business school and the accompanying forms for you to fill out.  He only mentioned it after you asked about it, which of course was after you called the school to see what was taking so long.  By that time, the acceptance date had passed.
You got into a screaming match with him, and in the middle of a sentence, that was the first time he hit you.  The both of you were stunned into silence, before you left the apartment you shared with him and went to your mother's house.  There, you got yet another shock when she said "It's your fault he hit you.  You should give up on your silly dream and settle down" you mother had always been the traditional housewife and all you saw was a miserable shell of what she used to be.  You then left her house and went to a hotel for a few days.
Then you made the biggest mistake of your life-you went crawling back to Jerry begging for forgiveness.  He took you in and said "Now don't make me hit you again, Y/N" you looked to the ground in shame.  He let you apply to the school again, but he had to know all the names of your teachers, classmates, when you had class and when you'd be home.  If you were even a few minutes late, you'd be in one of your lover's quarrels again.
In time, you got a job in an accounting firm as a financial advisor to one Mick Mars, the guitarist from the notorious rock band Motley Crue.  He seemed cool at first but when you saw notes in his financial record for $10,000 loans under the tag "snacks" you knew you were dealing with a substance abuser.  You looked up at him during one of your weekly meetings and said "Mr. Mars, if you keep taking out loans for 'snacks' you will be bankrupt in four months" you didn't care about what he did, but if he didn't have enough money to pay you to keep his checkbook balanced then you'd have to drop one of your most notable clients-an event that would have ended your career.
"Okay Miss L/N" he sighed, getting up with a grunt.  He had disclosed his medical condition to you, and you felt for him.  You would make sure that he'd have enough money for medications and treatment, even if it meant that you'd secretly put some of your own money in his account.  He remained quiet a moment then asked "Would you like a drink with me when you get off?"
You were taken aback by this offer, but it had been a long time since you had a drink with another person.  Jerry never let you go anywhere without him-even to your mother's house on holidays.  He'd even call you at work multiple times a day to see what you were doing, and if you didn't answer he'd interrogate you when you got home, accuse you of cheating on him and he'd hit you again.  "Just a quick drink wouldn't hurt" you smiled at Mick, since you'd be off the clock in a few minutes anyway.
When you drank with him, you found him much more interesting than you originally thought.  He was only a year or two older than you and you'd been his financial advisor for over a year now.  You felt a real connection with him and he was a perfect gentleman.  You started talking about Jerry, how he never lets you do anything and you always had to be on call for him.  Mick looked at you with utter shock.  "If he's such an asshole to you, then why are you with him?"
"I don't know" you answered truthfully, playing with your engagement ring "he's the only one who talked to me when I was in school, the only man to show interest in a nerd like me..."
"That's not a reason to marry someone" he told you "Hell, even dating him sounds like a nightmare!" he laughed, but you just shuddered.  You became very uncomfortable at that point and excused yourself, saying you'd see him at next weeks client meeting.
After you'd left, Mick scolded himself.  "I'm such a goddamned idiot..." he had liked you from the first client meeting.  You were intelligent, courteous and explained everything in layman's terms so he'd understand what you were doing for him.  He was quite impressed at the delicate way you told him to stop with the "snack" runs.  The last few financial advisors he'd hired cursed him out and dropped him as a client after a month.  He sat at the bar and sighed, taking a swig of vodka.
Jerry was waiting for you when you came in "Who was that old dude you were just with at the bar?" in the calmest tone he could muster.  The pit of your stomach fell through, knowing that tone meant a beating.
"Just one of my clients" you choked out "we had a weekly meeting today and he invited me for a drink afterward..."
"Is that so?" Jerry got up and grabbed your wrist tightly "are you fucking him too?"
"Jerry, let go" you winced "You're hurting me..."
"ARE YOU FUCKING HIM LIKE THE LITTLE SLUT YOU ARE?!" this was the last thing you remember before he hit you again.
The next morning, you surveyed the damage to your face-a black eye and a busted lip.  Your eyes started tearing up as you put on make-up to cover the injuries.  The looks you got at the office were a mixture of sadness, horror and pity.  This you expected after a beating, but what you didn't expect was Mick Mars coming in to apologize for saying what he did last night.  He took a good look at your face "What the fuck happened?!"
"It's nothing..." you assured him.
"A black eye and split lip isn't nothing!  Who did that to you?!"
It was then your best friend Lily walked by and answered "Her good for nothing, woman beatin' fiancee!"
"Lily!" you scolded "I told you that in confidence!"
"Yeah!" Lily shot back "I am confident that man'll kill you if you don't leave his sorry ass!  Hell, you can come stay with me a while!  Me and Johnny love havin' you around!" Johnny being her husband.
Mick looked like he was about to explode in rage "Or me!  I wouldn't mind having you in Mars Mountain with me!" that being the name he'd chosen for his residence, as he bought a whole mountain for himself.  Lily looked Mick up and down in a playful, quizzical manner.  He grew annoyed and said "What?"
She smiled and said "Nothin'" she shuffled some papers on the desk "Just that I've been seein' the glances you been eye'n Y/N with ever since she took you on as a client" her tone had changed from serious to flirty.
He blushed a little and said "I have no idea what you're talking about..."
"Don't play dumb!  You've wanted to hold her in your arms for a long, long time!"
You too were blushing, you having the same thought from time to time.  Just the other night, you dreamed that you were getting married to him instead of Jerry, and you were happy.  You cleared your throat and said "Mr. Mars, if you have no other business today, please leave..."
He bit his lip and showed himself out, after he left you chewed out Lily for bringing your personal business to a client.  "Girl, when are you gonna see that man isn't fit to be your pool boy much less your husband!  Does he have to put you in the hospital for you to leave him?!"
"Jerry loves me!  He just gets rough sometimes!" you defended him.
Lily stared at you like you had seven heads.  "That isn't what love is, Y/N!  He loves the control you let him have over you!  That man you just put out" she motioned to the door "that man loves you!"
"How do you know that?" you asked sarcastically.
"Because he looks at you the same way my husband still looks at me after ten years of marriage!"  she slammed her hands on the desk "he even offered his home to you, you stupid bitch!"
That was all you could take for today, so you informed your supervisor that you'd be taking the rest of the day off and to cancel all your appointments.  This was a rare thing for you so you'd been granted the off time right away.  You went back to the apartment and went to sleep.  When you woke up, Jerry had come home and asked "What are you doing home?" in the calm, dangerous voice.
"I had a bad day at work, so I came home to chill out" you wiped your eyes.
"Were you waiting for your other boyfriend?  The old guy from the bar?" he asked.
"No!" you got up to defend yourself "Yes, he came by the office but that was to apologize for something he said yesterday!" you then felt his hands around your neck and squeeze.  You were gasping for air, hearing the words "slut", "tramp" and "I'll kill you" before the world began to shrink and spin, until there was only black.
The next week, Mick went to his meeting with Miss L/N as usual, but he was greeted by Lily, who had taken all of Y/N appointments for her.  In her most professional voice, she said "I'm very sorry Mr. Mars, but Miss L/N is indisposed for a few days" she was writing something on a note card and slide it over to him "If you'd like to reschedule for when she comes back, I'd be more than happy to set that up for you!"
"No, that's okay" he read the card, putting it in his coat pocket "Please let her know that I stopped by" he shook Lily's hand.
"Go save that woman from that devil, ya hear me?" he nodded and walked to a payphone, where he dialed three numbers and asked for the same favor from all three recipients.  They all know it had to be serious-Mick Mars never asked for favors.
The note card read "L.A. General Hospital.  Room 342" he knew from experience that the third floor of L.A. General was the   intensive care floor, so you HAD to be in a bad way.  He was met by Vince, Tommy and Nikki at the door and they all made their way to 342.  He wasn't ready to see you in a comatose state with a tube breathing for you.  He was expecting Jerry to be there, but he was nowhere to be seen.
"Hey Doc" Mick pulled the doctor inside the room "What the fuck happened?"
The doctor looked over the chart and said "From what her fiancee told us, she tried to hang herself with a leather belt"  he was skeptical and added "but those bruises look an awful lot like hand prints, wouldn't you agree?"
The four of them nodded their agreement when Tommy asked "Where is her fiancee now?"
"Jail" the doctor said "we didn't believe his story one bit and the police investigated the scene, found no belt in the apartment at all and questioned some of her coworkers" Mick gulped and his eyes began to water.
"How long's she been like this?" he nervously asked, his band mates putting their arms around him to comfort him.
"Six days" the doctor answered "she does show signs of improvement, brain activity and such.  The bastard crushed her windpipe..." the doctor had gotten angry.
"So there's a chance she'll wake up?" Vince asked, Mick too distraught to continue.
The doctor smiled "She's stronger than she gives herself credit for.  She was dead when they bought her in.  She gets better everyday."
Mick had composed himself and asked "Has she said anything since..." he couldn't finish the sentence.
"She keeps saying 'Mick' from time to time.  Who Mick is, we don't know" Mick smiled a weak grin, but he went to sit next to you and held your hand.  The doctor had a spark of realization and he excused himself, explaining that if they had any more questions, just ask him.
"So what do you want us to do now, Mick?" Nikki asked him.
"Go to her apartment, pack her stuff and take it to Mars Mountain" he interlocked his fingers with yours "Go to Underhill Financial Advisors, ask for Lily Collins.  Explain who you are and what's happened.  She'll give you everything you need" they did as they were asked and Lily did help them, her and her husband Johnny helping move your things to Mick's house.
A few days later, your eye fluttered open.  The tube having been removed from your throat seeing as it wasn't needed any longer.  The day Mick came to you and held your hand like a lover for the first time, you began breathing on your own.  You looked around gathering your surroundings.  Mick felt you stir and he looked down at you "Y/N?"
"Mick?  Where am I?" you said in a hoarse voice, you flinching at the pain it caused you to talk.
"The hospital" he answered "Jerry choked you into a  coma about a week and a half ago" you bolted upright at the mention of Jerry's name.  Not out of concern, but out of fear he'd come back to finish you.
"Is he here?!" you looked like a scared meerkat, scanning the area for danger.
"No, honey he's in jail" he stroked your hair lovingly "he can't hurt you any more..."
You cried silent tears of relief as he comforted you, thoughts of what that man put you through the last three years melting off you like wax.  "What about the apartment?" you asked him, looking up with your big E/C doe eyes.
"My friends, Lily and Johnny moved all your stuff into my place" he said, kissing your hand "if you'll have me that is."
"Mind if we take it slow?" you asked.
"Of course, honey" he then kissed your forehead "We have all the time in the world."

soft betrayal, mom jeans and high heels, long nails tapping impatiently against paper, organized chaos, quietly humming while ruining yet another life ( piece by piece ), ancient typewriters, never getting your hands dirty ( but your hands are stained red, regardless ), the devil’s favorite weapon is a quill, coffee that burns your tongue, burying yourself in strangers, chasing stories, the sweet taste of destruction, heart shaped lollipops, sunkissed shoulders, blurred lines between right and wrong, dog eared pages, blowing bubbles, fake smiles, the color of dark oceans, running in high heels, slowly becoming an empty shell of a girl, sour ambition, ‘my heart will leave you blistered and stained’, roses tucked behind ears, revenge in a tea cup, backhanded compliments, writing and writing and writing until your heart bleeds, scribbled notes in margins, blood red lips..... and how you’re so afraid that you think it might just break you ( luckily, villains don’t break that easily ).
LINDSEY MORGAN? No, that’s actually RITA SKEETER from the MARAUDERS ERA. You know, the child of ADRIANNA VARGAS (NEE SKEETER) and DIEGO VARGAS? Only 25 years old, this SLYTHERIN alumni works as an REPORTER and is sided with THE NEUTRALS / HERSELF ONLY. SHE identifies as a CIS WOMAN and is a HALFBLOOD who is known to be VINDICTIVE, CRUEL, and CORRUPT but also SILVER TONGUED, CHARMING, and RESOURCEFUL. — &&. ( LIZ, GMT+2, SHE/HER, 22. )
BACK TO BASICS.
name: margarita alvera skeeter. born name: margarita vargas. occupation: journalist. nicknames: rita, ree.
+ creative, silver tongued, resourceful, charming and bright. - two faced, cruel, vindictive, selfish and scheming.
age: 25. date of birth: december 31. zodiac: capricorn. hometown: acapulco, mexico. current location: lives across the street from the ministry in an apartment she can most definitively not afford. gender: cis female. pronouns: she/her. orientation: bisexual. allegiance: herself only. but she collaborates with the death eaters frequently, as she will write anything that they want. spoken languages: spanish ( native language ), english ( fluently ), french ( sufficient ). moral alignment: neutral evil. - A neutral evil villain does whatever she can get away with. She is out for herself, pure and simple. She sheds no tears for those she kills, whether for profit, sport, or convenience (x).
element: water. house: slytherin.
BACKGROUND & FAMILY.
so. margarita vargas was born as the youngest of five daughters. she grew up in the coastal city of acapulco, located in mexico, and her first few years were spent in absolute bliss. her father, a muggle man, was a famous - and later, infamous, televangelist. diego vargas was known all over mexico for his weekly broadcasted church service, and became very rich for it. what did he do with this wealth? well, for the most part, he spoiled his family rotten.
the vargas girls were the perfect daughters, as was expected of them. they grew up in the public eye, attending sermons, smiling pretty, posing for elaborately staged family portraits. and always, always saying the right things. like pretending that they were being sent off to a christian girl’s school every year, instead of attending illvermorny.
mr. vargas married adrianna vargas knowing full well that she was a witch, and intended to take full advantage of that. and adrianna was happy to make diego’s life easier, because she loved him. but more than anything, she loved him for his fame, his money, his success.
unfortunately for the vargas, everything came crumbling down when rita was eight. then, it became public knowledge that her father was heavily involved in financing and also collaborating with several corrupt political bodies which aimed to cause mayhem, destruction and terror within the country.
so the vargas fell from grace, and out of favor in the public eye. mr. vargas faced jail time, lost all of his sponsors, and suddenly didn’t seem so appealing to mrs vargas anymore. so adrianna packed up her bags, took her daughters, changed their names and moved to england. and so margarita vargas found herself with a new identity - rita skeeter.
after that, she would never see her father again. her mother never spoke of him ( like most things, in the skeeter household - problems were buried but never forgotten ), and refused to acknowledge his existence.
their new life was a sharp contrast to their past, which would come to seem like a blurry dream. while the vargas had bathed in luxury and money, the skeeters kinda struggled financially. her mother was fueled by fury - angry with a man that had humiliated her, taken advantage of her, left her with nothing. so she vowed to never be dependent on anyone else ever again. she found herself a job, and set up a new life for herself and her daughters, one that wasn’t focused on the saintly teachings of her ex-husband. instead, adrianna skeeter drilled into her daughters that success, power and glory was all that mattered. everything else, even family, comes second. you can only depend on yourself.
so, the skeeter girls became competitive. cut throat. dangerous. her sisters’ names can be read in the highest offices of britain, in politics, in the nicest corporate offices in london. but they also hardly ever speak to each other, anymore.
HOGWARTS YEARS.
she arrives at hogwarts ready to prove herself. show that she’s just as good as her sisters, if not better.
but she soon realizes that she falls painfully short — that she isn’t the brightest of the skeeter bunch, that she isn’t the most talented witch. hell, she doesn’t even place second.
so what does she do? she plays dumb. pretends that she’s just a pretty face. it’s just a fluke that she’s getting high grades - it’s not that she sits up all night studying. or that she manages to bribe and cheat her way into getting a time turner by her fourth year. she’s working herself into the ground, but refuses to let anyone know. it’s better, that way.
really though, pride isn’t the sin that will hang rita. she’s playing the long game, and comes to realize that no one doubts a pretty, senseless girl. so that is what she shall be.
she gets through hogwarts on dirty tricks and hard work, but makes it look effortless.
around hogwarts, she was known as quite the party girl, always looking to have a good time. maybe a little too good of a time, actually. her reputation always walked the line, on that one.
she acts drunker than she is, but is careful to always remain sharp. most people think of her as baby skeeter - fun, but harmless. for rita, secrets become a currency.
and so she moves through different social circles, shedding her personality like a snake sheds its skin, all to fit in with any crowd, any house. she loses herself somewhere along the way - at this point, rita doesn’t know who she is. but that’s just as well. rita skeeter has never let anyone in, and she never will.
a new name appears in the school paper around rita’s fourth year. bridget higgins writes the stories that are on everyone’s lips, but no one knows who she is. obviously it’s rita.
by her seventh year, rita manages to become an animagus, and a royal blue beetle begins its reign. miss higgins’ stories become more and more elaborate, more daring, more scandalous. by the end of her time at hogwarts, rita is already writing in blood, destroying lives through the flick of her quill.
AFTER HOGWARTS.
rita started interning at witch weekly during the summers after her fifth year at the school. she wrote short fluff pieces about fashion.
after graduating, rita started working as a columnist for witch weekly. she wrote a popular gossip column about popular famous witches and wizards, but also dipped her toes into the pool of wizard politics in britain.
eventually, she came to take on a second job at the daily prophet. she stretches herself too thin, but she makes it work. somehow.
at the daily prophet, she writes more political stories. zeroes in on the ministry. asks uncomfortable questions. shows up where she is definitively not allowed to be. she becomes a pain in the ass like no other, and writes exposés that become notorious for putting people in tight spots.
many at the ministry treat her like crap, like a bug that needs to be squashed. she realizes quickly that they have little respect for her, and she is quite happy to return the favor. if they treat her like she’s awful, she might as well be just that.
her stories aren’t entirely fabricated —- every story that she writes has a seed of truth in it. just enough to make it believable.
most of it is bullshit though, but to stir the pot, she every now and then drops something that is very accurate. sometimes she does it to help the order. sometimes she does it to help herself or the death eaters. but there is always a motive behind it.
eventually gets involved with the death eaters. didn’t actually mean to, but fucked with the wrong person at the ministry !!! now she’s under their thumb and it kinda sucks but she’s also not that mad about it because she gets some ~~~~carefully selected~~~ information in return. so she basically writes whatever the fuck the death eaters want her to write.
rita started out with the goal of doing good reporting, but realized quickly that those stories did not sell papers and gained little interest from the public. so she turns to sensationalism, doesn’t see the harm in spinning her stories a little further than necessary. which soon spiraled out of control.
RITA’S FUTURE ( 1998 and forward. )
rita skeeter goes missing in 1999 and is rumored to be laughing all the way to the bank because the biographies she wrote on harry potter, albus dumbledore and severus snape sold MILLIONS. new books by rita skeeter resurfaces every few years, but no one ever sees her again. conspiracy theorists are sure that she was murdered ( and her books are now penned by a ghost writer ), but others say that she’s off on an island somewhere.
THE TIME CLASH.
so ------ rita is pulled from her youth, straight into the future. it’s a bit of a shock, of course.
rita is a reporter first, everything else second. so what does she do? RESEARCH. looks around. tries her best to figure shit out. makes diligent notes of everything that has gone wrong, and everything that has gone right. she researches her future self. she researches everything her future self has written.
most of all, i think she adapts. to the muggle technology, mostly, but also to the new world order.

FAVORITE CHARACTER TROPES.
THE DARK CHICK - good at reading emotions, resolving fights and weaponizing her strengths — all the while keeping an eye on what she considers to be the bigger picture.
FEMME FATALE - ‘first she turns you on, then she turns on you.’
INTREPID REPORTER - a troublemaker sort of journalist.
THEN LET ME BE EVIL - any sense of good reporting and morals gets broken down by being treated like crap by presumptuous forces of good for too long. aka everyone telling her she’s shit.
CONSUMMATE LIAR - a liar so good you never want to play poker with them because you’d go home without your underwear and short next week’s paycheck.
BITCH IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING - wears a thousand masks to hide her true colors.
THE POWER OF ACTING - a character who acts her way through life.
NO FACE UNDER THE MASK - does the real rita skeeter even exist? who is she? can she remember her true personality? probably not.
THE EVIL PRINCE - a character that knows they’re meant for greatness, but there are a lot of other… less great characters in their way. if only these characters could be “persuaded” to move, then nothing would stand in their way to the throne. ;)
CHRONIC BACKSTABBING DISORDER - someone who constantly and successfully betrays their allegiances. switches sides as frequently as she switches clothes. what is loyalty?
AMBIGUOUSLY EVIL - it’s never quite made clear what side she is truly on? sike, she’s playing for both teams !!!
HEEL / FACE REVOLVING DOOR - morality is grey, and this character switches sides so often that in the long run, they end up… just not having one.
THE CORRUPTER - the metaphorical devil on your shoulder.
THE CON ARTIST - selling lies so outrageous they can’t possibly be true, but still getting away with it.
CHARACTER INFLUENCES.
SOMBRA ( overwatch ) - always got another dirty trick up her sleeve, kinda selfish, always infiltrating something, out there manipulating those in power hell yeah

After a few days of befriending servants and spending as much time with Dan as his busy schedule would allow, Dan had some news.
They were lying in bed facing each other after a long day. Dan had been called away for future-king duties, and Phil had been stuck in lessons most of the day. They hadn’t seen each other since breakfast, so they were quietly enjoying each others’ company, fingers centimetres apart on the duvet but dancing closer and brushing every now and then. They hadn’t been as intimate as they had been at first, keeping the touching to a minimum, but they were starting to play at the idea again. It made Phil’s stomach flutter with excitement.
“There’s going to be a ball next week,” Dan said casually at a lull in the conversation. “My father says that you have to be formally presented to the Iridacian people and aristocracy.”
Phil’s head snapped up from where it had been peacefully resting on his pillow. The room was only lit by a few candles on either side of the bed, but he could easily make out Dan’s expression in the dim light. His face was neutral, his eyes watching the way his fingers tapped a made-up rhythm on the bed.
"A ball?" Phil asked. "Will I have to do anything in particular?"
Dan looked up to meet Phil's eyes, a reassuring smile on his face. "Not much. We have to dance together and greet people, but it'll be a lot like at the wedding." He frowned. "You might have to dance with other people, too, but I'll see what I can do about that if you don't want to do it."
Phil nodded appreciatively. "That would be good." He paused, considering. "Will I have to learn new dances?"
"I wouldn't think so. It's a fairly standard ball, so traditional dances would be fi-" Dan cut himself off with a sheepish smile. "Sorry. Traditional Iridacian dances. I guess some lessons may be required."
Giggling, Phil agreed. "I'm afraid I'll be a bit rubbish, but I'll give it a shot."
Dan smiled softly. "I'll help you. After all, I'll be the one you dance with the most."
"Good." Phil sighed and flopped back to look at the ceiling. "I'm pretty rubbish at talking to people, too, so it's good that you'll be there to help."
Phil felt something soft and warm touch his hand and glanced down to see Dan's pinky wrap around his own. Butterflies fluttered in his stomach once more as he looked back up to Dan's wide brown eyes already looking into his.
"Of course I'll be there to help," Dan whispered.
Phil's breath caught in his throat. Dan looked at him like he'd put the stars in the sky. Phil didn't really understand that, since certainly it was Dan who put them there, not Phil. All he had to do was look at Dan's soft, freckled face to see that.
"Thanks," he breathed after a long silence. "You're amazing." Phil froze as soon as the words left his mouth, worried he'd broken this peaceful moment with too much of an emotion that neither of them was quite ready for.
His worry didn't last long, however, as Dan's expression lit up in a broad grin, his freckles overshadowed by a blush. A giggle escaped his lips, and Phil swore he heard angels sing.
"You're not so bad yourself," Dan teased.
Phil snorted and rolled his eyes playfully. "Gee, thanks."
Dan's pinky disentangled itself from Phil's, but he didn't give Phil a chance to mourn its absence as soon his whole hand covered Phil's.
"I think you're amazing, too."
The way Phil's heart soared and mind raced was dangerous and he started to worry that he might do something he'd regret. He and Dan still barely knew each other, after all, and the last thing he wanted to do was push Dan to do anything too soon.
"We should get some sleep," he told Dan. He rolled over and blew out the candles on his side of their bed, feeling the bed dip as Dan did the same, hands still linked.
In the dark, Dan whispered, "Good night, Phil."
"Good night, Dan." He gave Dan's hand a gentle squeeze, then closed his eyes to surrender himself to sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~
The next few days felt like deja vu to Phil. He was fitted for a suit appropriate for the occasion, learned a few dances with Dan's careful guidance, and was informed who he would have to speak to at the ball. It was very reminiscent of the time leading up to the wedding with the rushed plans, but Phil didn't have time to be worried. Even if he had been, Dan was at his side through the whole process, lovely as ever.
The day of the ball, Phil finally got a chance to sit for a minute. It was ironic, in a way, since today was the day he'd be putting all the preparations to use. But everyone left him to his own devices for the whole morning, a luxury he hadn't known since before the announcement of the ball. He and Dan lounged in bed as long as possible, then took a walk through the gardens. Dan seemed to sense Phil's growing anxiety about the ball, so he provided a perfect distraction of stories and laughter. Phil felt his affection for Dan growing by the day, and today was no exception.
That afternoon, however, the madness returned. Dan and Phil were separated so a team of people could bedazzle them for the ball. A man named Greg made a few last-minute alterations to Phil's classic Iridacian suit, adjusting the hem of the white dress pants and the waistline of the blue royal jacket, while a woman named Hannah fluffed his quiff to perfection. Time passed in a blink with all the people swirling around him, and suddenly he was standing with Dan again in their suite.
Dan wore his own royal jacket, though his was a delicate lavender with a fancy green sash. His pants were also a pristine white and his hair had been left in their natural curls, neatly styled into a controlled pile that fell just over his left eye and topped with a purple flower crown full of what Phil now knew to be gladioli.
"You look wonderful," Dan breathed in awe, his eyes scanning Phil slowly.
Phil's cheeks flushed under Dan's warm gaze. "Thanks, so do you." He probably would've gone for something more along the lines of spectacular, perfect, or gorgeous, but he decided Dan's descriptor would be sufficient.
A servant came to them and told them it was time, which Phil decided was good. He wasn't sure he'd be able to stand there much longer without trying to run a hand through Dan's perfectly arranged hair, which would ruin the hard work everyone had done to it.
Dan held his arm out, and Phil gladly accepted it and let Dan lead him to the ballroom.
Their first dance of the night went surprisingly well. Phil didn't stumble even once, nor did he step on Dan's toes, which he would definitely consider a win, even if the rest of the night didn't go so smoothly.
As it turned out, it was good that Phil had a win to consider. Almost immediately, he and Dan were separated by a few aristocrats vying for Dan's attention, which left Phil alone and defenceless against the hoard of people that wanted to meet the latest addition to their royal family.
At first, people were nice, if a bit pushy. They asked him questions about Stratalary and his cloud manipulation powers, which he answered easily. He liked talking about home. It was later in the conversation that things took a turn for the worse.
"How are you settling into life in our great Perennis, Your Highness?" asked a duchess (or maybe she was a countess... Phil couldn't remember after all the titles people had thrown around).
"Oh, I'm settling in fine," Phil replied with a polite smile. "I've even been making a few friends here and there."
"That's wonderful!" the duchess/countess exclaimed. "Tell me, who might they be? Perhaps I know them."
"They're actually the servants. I've found myself popping down to the kitchens on occasion and made fast friends with the head chef," Phil told her proudly.
The woman gasped and put a hand to her chest, scandalized. "Servants? But you're a prince!"
Phil furrowed his brows in confusion. "I am, indeed. What has that got to do with my friends?"
"Surely you Stratalarians have more taste than to consort with servants!"
Phil didn't know what to say. Did status matter that much to Iridacians, or was it just this woman?
"Maybe it's simply a cultural peculiarity," he tried to salvage the conversation. "My marriage to Prince Daniel is centred around such things, isn't it? The merging of two cultures previously at war."
The man Phil assumed was this woman's husband scoffed. "Sure, the merging of cultures, not a calculated measure to prevent further financial and military conflict. Do you even know why you're here, Prince?"
Phil bristled. He didn't often throw his weight or title around, but he felt he had no choice. He stood up straighter, held his head up high, and said in a commanding tone, "I'm here because I am married to your future king. Now, I am a prince and the husband of your leader, and you will treat me with the respect I am owed."
The aristocrats around him looked taken aback for a moment, and Phil took a moment to bask in the glory of it. He had stuck up for himself, and quite spectacularly, if he may say so himself. At the same time, however, anxiety at telling off a group of wealthy people he didn't know kicked in, a feeling exacerbated by the next person to speak.
To his left was a curmudgeonly old man with a cane, who told him point-blank, "Back in my day, those damn Stratalarians knew to stay the hell away! They wouldn't dare enter the royal court, much less worm their way to the top of civilized society, treaty or otherwise. But I know better." He eyed Phil with suspicion. "I know what you are, boy, and I'm watching you. You'd better watch your back," he growled, punctuating his vague threat by spitting on the ground at Phil's feet before turning and hobbling off.
As a prince, Phil should have expected threats, especially when moving to a foreign land full of enemies, but he couldn't help his shock. No one had ever treated him like this and he didn't know what to do about it. The threat combined with the obvious hostility from the duchess had anxiety rising in his chest, making it difficult to breathe. His control over his powers slipped and he could tell clouds were beginning to form around him. He needed to leave and he had to find Dan. Dan could help. Dan was always so calming.
"Ex- Excuse me, I'm so sorry," Phil stuttered. He stumbled out of the small circle of people he'd been talking to and scanned the crowd for Dan, quickly finding him in his unique purple jacket and flower crown standing tall above the rest of the guests. He made his way towards his husband as fast as he could, feeling his breathing grow more and more laboured.
Dan saw him coming from a few steps away and his face lit up, but the smile soon turned into a frown. He excused himself from the guests he had been talking to and met Phil a few steps away.
"Hey, come on," Dan murmured, gently placing an arm around Phil's shoulders. He guided Phil out of the room, down a hallway, and around a corner, all while Phil shook like a leaf and desperately tried to even out his breathing. When they stopped moving, Dan turned to face Phil, looking into his eyes. "Phil, focus on me, alright? Breathe with me."
Phil nodded, wide eyes fixed on Dan's lips. He took in a shuddering breath when instructed, then let it out slowly, repeating the process a few times. Gradually, the panic subsided and Phil felt like he could breathe again. As soon as the panic was under control, Phil felt tears leak out the corners of his eyes and a sob spilt out of his mouth. A slightly shaky hand reached up to cover it as more sobs came.
Dan's expression was horribly concerned as he pulled Phil forward into a hug, which Phil gratefully accepted. Dan swayed them slowly. "I'm here, Phil, it's alright. It's alright, shhh," he whispered. "I promise, you're alright."
A few minutes later, Phil's sobs turned to hiccups, and the hiccups turned to totally steady breathing. Finally, he lifted his head from where he'd buried it in Dan's neck.
"I'm sorry," he sniffled.
"Oh, Phil, no," Dan replied. He placed a hand at the base of Phil's skull and brushed his fingers through the short hairs there. "Don't be sorry, it's alright."
"But- but I cried all over you," Phil mumbled ashamedly.
Dan shook his head. "I don't care. You can cry on me whenever you need to."
Phil felt tears well up in his eyes again as he nodded. Dan was truly too nice to him.
"Now," Dan said cautiously, looking into Phil's eyes. "Could you tell me what happened? Please?"
Phil shuddered again, and Dan's arms came up to wrap around him in another hug, this time for warmth rather than purely stability and grounding. Phil took the time to gather his thoughts, then told Dan what had happened. As he spoke, Dan kept his face carefully neutral, though Phil could see the facade cracking as he continued. When he finished, Dan's jaw was set and his lips were in a tight line.
"I'm so sorry, Phil," Dan said. He pressed a long kiss to Phil's forehead, then a shorter one to his temple before pulling Phil's head back towards his neck. "I won't let anything happen to you, I promise."
Phil nodded into Dan's neck and tightened his grip around Dan's waist.
"You don't have to stick around at the ball any longer, obviously," Dan continued. "In fact, I think I'd rather you didn't. I hate seeing you like this. You're such a ray of sunshine, you don't deserve to be overshadowed by clouds and sadness."
"Clouds," Phil murmured. He lifted his head off of Dan again and looked around him, noticing for the first time that the whole hallway was filled with fog. "Damn. I hate losing control."
Dan shook his head. "It's alright. You're in control now." He smiled, chagrined. "Sorry if the metaphor was a little too literal."
Phil tried to offer him a small smile in return, though he wasn't sure how successful a smile it was. He focused for a moment and willed away the clouds, relaxing slightly when the hallway cleared.
"It's nothing to be ashamed of," Dan continued. "I lose control sometimes, too, and then flowers start to spring up everywhere."
Phil nodded, smile turning a little cheeky. "I'd noticed."
Dan rolled his eyes and pushed his shoulder lightly. His expression screamed "fond", which Phil found extremely comforting. Anyone who could see him go through a panic attack and still look at him like that was truly someone special.
A moment later, however, Dan's expression sobered. "I don't like what I have to ask you next, but I have to ask. Since you don't remember the names of these people, could you come with me back into the ballroom briefly and point them out to me?"
Phil's eyebrows scrunched up in worry. "But won't that make me look like a tattle-tale?"
One of Dan's hands came up and rubbed at the wrinkles on Phil's forehead as if that would make the worry go away. "That's a possibility, yes, but it'll also send a message to everyone that you are not to be treated this way and that I will personally see to it that there will be consequences to acting similarly in the future. I don't want you to feel unsafe or like an outsider."
Phil felt another surge of warmth at Dan's words, loving the reminder that Dan genuinely cared for him. He hesitated for a little longer, but eventually agreed to do as Dan asked.
When he and Dan reentered the ballroom hand-in-hand, the whole room stopped what they were doing to look. A few people glanced from them to the ceiling and back again, which confused Phil, until he also looked up. Near the tall ceiling was a large group of grey clouds, which Phil knew only could have happened as he left. Shame built inside him as he willed them away, but a quick squeeze of his hand from Dan calmed his thoughts again.
Dan leaned over and whispered in his ear, "Who am I looking for?"
Phil scanned the room and found the culprits scattered around. He pointed them out as fast as he could, then asked Dan if he could return to their suite yet.
"I have to stay here and speak with a few more people, but I'll be there as soon as I can. It won't be more than half an hour. Will you be alright until then?"
It wasn't ideal, but Phil would take it. He'd have Dan's help to stay out of his own head soon, but now the priority was staying away from the ball guests, so he told Dan he'd be fine.
"Good," Dan said with a nod. He faced Phil and took both his hands in his, pressing delicate kisses to each, then leaned in and kissed Phil's cheek. "I'll see you soon."
Phil tried not to show his shock at Dan's sudden kisses, given their audience. Internally, he was fairly certain he had just melted, but he forced himself to turn and leave the room. On the way, he found a servant rushing from the kitchens to lead him back to his suite. Upon arrival, he changed into his pyjamas and climbed into the soft bed to wait for Dan.
He didn't have to wait long; Dan's estimate of half an hour turned into something more like ten minutes.
As soon as Dan entered the room, he was apologizing.
"Phil, I'm so sorry. That was horrible for you to have to deal with, and I shouldn't have let us get separated. And I'm sorry I had to send you back here alone after all that."
Phil was fairly certain the apologies would keep coming unless he did something, so he spoke up. "It's not your fault. Besides, I'm alright now, and that's what matters."
The guilty expression Dan wore relaxed somewhat, but not by much.
"Come here," Phil requested when it became apparent that Dan wouldn't let it go that easily.
Dan reluctantly shuffled toward the bed to stand next to Phil, who took his hands in his.
Phil kissed Dan's hands. "Thank you for helping me," he whispered. "Now get changed and join me." He kissed Dan's hands once more before dropping them and pushing Dan away to change.
Soon after, the two of them were in bed together.
"I'm going to try something, if that's alright," Phil murmured. When Dan nodded, Phil scooted his body closer, tentatively wrapping an arm around Dan's waist and sliding one of his legs between Dan's.
Phil heard Dan's breath hitch at the close contact and was about to back away and tell him to forget the whole thing when an arm snaked around his own waist.
"I think I like this something," Dan whispered. Although Phil couldn't see it, he knew Dan was smiling.
Let’s talk money — a core concern of any divorce experience. Most of us tend to think about money in terms of dollars and cents; about making the “right” financial choices. Money, however, is a much more complex part of our lives. Money has the capacity to trigger powerful subjective emotions in everyone. It symbolizes very different things to different people. Our feelings about money and how to manage it are largely dependent on our own unique family history.
In an earlier newsletter, I spoke of the goals of divorce as twofold; severing both the legal bonds and the emotional bonds. A viable divorce can only result from a careful and balanced consideration of these two distinct needs. Since money is intimately connected with divorce and divorce attorneys play an instrumental role in assisting their clients to create successful financial resolutions, it is imperative that they understand how the hot button of money can evoke emotional fireworks and disrupt the resolution of financial matters.
How Attitudes And Feelings Towards Money Impact Relationships
An individual’s interaction with money is one of the most important relationships in his or her life. The way someone feels about money says more about them than they may realize.
Usually, money is thought of in black-and-white terms — either there is enough of it or there isn’t. The truth is that money is chock full of psychological, emotional and symbolic meanings. A person’s relationship with money mirrors his or her conflicts, vulnerabilities fears, needs and desires.
Think about it. Money affects career and relationship choices. It is reflected in personal matters of control, self-esteem and even contributes to your overall sense of well-being. Most of the decisions people makes are formed, in part, by their individual beliefs about money.
Equating love and money, something frequently learned from one’s nuclear family, is an example of how money and feelings can be intertwined. Parents who don’t spend enough time with their children often say “I love you” by showering them with material gifts. When these children become adults, they can easily feel unloved unless that love is demonstrated with some material item.
An individual’s self-esteem can directly impact financial decisions as well as spending habits. If someone feels they don’t measure up to their own expectations or those of others, they might find themselves making costly and unnecessary purchases that only temporarily soothe their feelings of inadequacy and low worth.
Depression, anger, retaliation, boredom, envy, and the need to control others — all of these emotions can affect financial decisions. Emotional spending can be expensive and destructive.
Ideas about money can be gender-based. To many women, desiring money is considered greedy. Talking about it and going after it are unlady like. It is not unusual for women to hand over their economic lives to their husbands. This results in a kind of denial about money which sounds something like this; “I’ll do what it takes to get money but I don’t want to think about it.”
Women also sometimes equate money and care taking. It is not uncommon for successful, high-income earners who are capable of financial self-reliance to look to their spouses to support them. In their “book of rules,” if a man truly loves and cares for them, he will be the provider.
While women typically view divorce as the loss of a relationship, men are more likely to think of divorce in terms of division of property and assets. Women may be reluctant to stop thinking in terms of “our property,” while their husbands have little difficulty avoiding an “our property” mind-set.
Finally, the meaning of “security” and how to attain it may have different meanings to the divorcing spouses. A person can feel secure even though he may not be secure at all. Conversely, a person can be secure feel totally insecure. These attitudes will surely affect negotiating financial settlements.
Money And Emotions = “Oil And Water”
When a marriage breaks up, the last thing anyone feels like doing is crunching numbers. In the grip of fear for one’s very survival, physically and emotionally, exercising rational judgement can be an uphill battle. Add to that individual idiosyncratic feelings about money and the reality that many human beings have difficulty making logical decisions when it comes to their personal finances, it is no wonder that divorcing people find themselves in need of solid financial and emotional advice.
Emotions and money are a dangerous combination.
During the divorce negotiations, they need to be kept separate. Like oil and water, trying to mix money and emotions is futile. When it comes to dealing with money,emotions can be the client’s worst enemy, leading to both higher legal bills and frazzled nerves.
So, how do you help your client keep emotions out of the picture when attempting to resolve money matters? The key is helping the client to understand that while divorce is an emotional experience, and heart-wrenching personal and financial decisions must be made, these decisions need to be entered into with a dispassionate and business-like frame of mind. In other words, they need to think of themselves as making a business deal, one in which emotions must not be permitted to influence sound judgement.
Put simply, there is no place for a vindictive attitude or guilty feelings. Unresolved emotions must be either left at home or worked through with the help of a divorce counselor.
Tips For Helping Your Clients Deal With The Pain Of Dividing The Assets
During the divorce negotiations, your clients sense of worth and value will be in different places. Some will have moved beyond the walking-wounded stage while others will still be seeking revenge.
Ideally, neither person is a victim or a bully, but rather is a decent human being who wants to deal fairly with their spouse in resolving economic issues. Unfortunately, the reality is that many will still be too overwhelmed by feelings of fear, self-pity, anger, failure, and guilt to behave rationally.
The following tips will help your clients to eliminate any tendencies they may have to endanger their long-term economic interests by allowing their emotions to impede their judgement.
Be Involved. This is the time to encourage clients to relinquish their murky and oblique relationship to money. It is not enough for them to want to feel financially secure. They need to learn to think about their money and examine it. If they have previously left money matters in their spouse’s hands, now is the time for them to assume responsibility for their own economic interests.
Commit To A Budget. As newly single people learning to manage money independently, clients need to understand the importance of successful budgeting. They need to be realistic about their spending habits and prepared to adapt their budget to adjust to any lifestyle changes that may occur, whether these changes are for the better or worse.
Communicate. Divorcing individuals need to develop and be encouraged to maintain a relationship with a competent financial advisor. This means selecting a professional with whom they are comfortable communicating how their financial plan is being maintained and making any adjustments along the way, as needed.
Develop a new mind set. Keep reminding clients that they have separate, distinct, and competitive economic interests with their spouse. If they are to competently take charge of their divorce, they must see their property in terms of “yours” and “mine,” and no longer view assets as “ours.”
Banish Guilt. If your client is tempted to relinquish their share of the assets, remind them that they cannot “buy” away his or her guilty feelings. Suggest to them that they seek help from a professional divorce counselor so that their guilt does not blind them to what is reasonable and appropriate.
Avoid Settling Prematurely. Be aware of those clients who want to settle for less than what they are entitled to simply because they want the divorce to be over. Reinforce their need to build a strong and healthy future for themselves and help them to see that avoidance behavior will be very costly in the long run.
Don’t Allow Feelings of Helplessness. If your client is stuck in the “woe is me” trap and is not producing the necessary documents and lists or is unwilling to discuss certain financial matters, remind the client that he has value and is capable of unwinding joint finances.
Stress Honesty. Suggest to clients that they do some introspection and assess how they really feel about money. They can ask themselves the following questions that may help identify the psychological factors driving their financial behaviour:
Is money a sign of power?
Do they use money to boost self-esteem?
Do they avoid budgeting?
Perhaps it is not more money they need to attain happiness, but instead a new state of mind about earning, spending and investing money.
Conclusion
Money carries multiple meanings to people and can trigger unique responses in them. Money is used to support, protect, honor, manipulate, reject and hurt others. Some divorcing people will lie and cheat for money, others will turn their backs on money to their own disadvantage.
Try telling someone who is in the throes of dividing marital property that “money doesn’t buy happiness.” It will not go over well. Divorcing men and women, overwhelmed by emotions, often react financially to their feelings. Sometimes, it is easier for them to make financial decisions about what they are entitled to based on hurt, anger or guilt rather than making a sound decision based on a working knowledge of finances.
When assisting their clients with the difficult task of dividing marital property, attorneys must do two things; validate their feelings and help them to keep these feelings separate from the business at hand. Financial decision making cannot be a forum for expressing deep emotions. Clients need assistance to mindfully examine their finances and let go of any emotionally driven approach /avoidance relationship with this most fundamental part of their life.
The Speckled Band on Stage:      Yep, Still Gay
Tumblr media
Note: I tagged those who reblogged the first part of this series. Please let me know if you would prefer not to be tagged in future posts.
This is the second installment in my series on obscure Sherlock Holmes film adaptations and their depiction of Holmes and Watson both individually and in relation to each other. (For a discussion of the 1921-23 silent films starring Eille Norwood, which appears to have been Doyle’s favorite adaptation, see here.)
I really didn’t mean to write a post about this one, seeing as it doesn’t strictly fit the theme of this series. It is a play, not a film, and it is only sort of an adaptation—although a retelling of The Speckled Band, it is written by Doyle himself. But while researching a very gay and very terrible 1931 film, I discovered that it was loosely adapted from this play. Naturally I read it as part of my research, telling myself that I wouldn’t get sidetracked writing a post about it. The failure of my self-control now lays before you.
In my defense, this play really is … well it really is Something. All sorts of wonderful and all sorts of tragic. If you’d prefer to read it for yourself before encountering the spoilers in this post, hop on over here and scroll to the second half of the webpage. And if you’ve got your subtext glasses so much as perched lightly on the end of your nose, be ready to be sent reeling by what you find.
(Spoilers below the cut)
Production and Reception
Doyle’s decision to adapt The Speckled Band for the stage was rather spur-of-the-moment. He had leased a theater for six months in order to showcase The House of Temperley, an adaptation of his novel Rodney Stone, but the play was largely unsuccessful (x, x). Threatened with considerable financial loss, Doyle set to work and within a week had written The Speckled Band. Despite its rushed composition the play was decidedly successful, and Doyle seems to have been quite pleased with it (x).
The play alters the original short story considerably. Some changes are so inconsequential as to be puzzling—the villain’s name is changed from Roylott to Rylott, the names of the stepdaughters are switched, etc—but other alterations are structural and make a significant difference. In particular, instead of following Watson’s pov, the audience’s perspective revolves primarily around the Rylott house. The scenes introducing Holmes and Watson are also considerably altered and expanded for potentially unfamiliar audiences, and a good deal more shouting and action is introduced throughout.
Oh, and Watson is engaged to Mary Morstan. Yeah. More on that later.
I have two complaints: First there is an uncomfortable dash of orientalism (i.e., western depictions of the east which cast it as mysterious, dangerous, and Other, and which played a largely unintentional but nonetheless significant role in justifying British imperialism), which is present in the original story but rather more prevalent in the stage play. Second, the female protagonist, although commendably brave, loses what little agency she had in the original story. But aside from these elements, I loved this play. The pacing is good and kept me engaged even when neither Sherlock or Watson are present, Dr. Rylott is genuinely frightening and I was really rather tense at times despite knowing the ending, and the occasional humor is on point—I actually laughed aloud once or twice. Further, ACD’s allegiance with the oppressed is out in full force, and there’s some genuinely touching commentary on the debilitating effects of abuse. And then, of course, there is Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson …
Sherlock Holmes on Stage
Guys. This is, pure and undiluted, Sherlock Holmes at his best. If you ever start to fear that Sherlock really might be the cold and detached reasoning machine some folk have fixated on, just read the way Arthur Conan Doyle writes him in this play. You will never doubt again that he is anything besides a snarky ahead-of-his-time genius with a heart of literal gay gold. We’ll get to the ‘gay’ part in later section, so we’ll set aside his interactions with Watson for the moment. There is plenty else to discuss.
You see, this Holmes does spout a variation of that much abused line from A Scandal in Belgravia, saying: “[love] would disturb my reason, unbalance my faculties. Love is like a flaw in the crystal, sand in the clockwork, iron near the magnet.” I understand that the statement, here and in Scandle, refers specifically to romantic love. Yet I cannot think it’s an accident that nearly the very next moment Holmes is flatly refusing to find the wife of a clearly abusive husband, asking only enough questions to ensure that she has found a safe refuge, even though the law is on the husband’s side and the man offers a whopping fee of 500 pounds. As if Doyle wants to drive home that Holmes accepts cases purely on the basis of empathy for the downtrodden and not finances, Holmes then remarks: “I’m afraid I shall never be a rich man, Watson.” Added to this, the manner in which he listens to, comforts, and puts himself in danger for Roylott’s step-daughter Enid is genuinely touching. As many of us have asserted for years, Sherlock Holmes is the champion of justice, ally of the oppressed, and altogether a beautiful smol man. ‘Love is a flaw in the crystal,’ indeed.
There is also a pleasing dash of Holmes the psychologist. It appears most obviously in an early analysis of Dr. Roylott, but most touchingly toward Rylott’s mercilessly abused servant Rodgers. The man is essentially good-hearted but entirely incapacitated by fear of his master, and this leads to his betraying Enid’s attempts to contact Sherlock. It was obviously a shitty move, but Holmes, who earlier expressed understanding of the thoroughgoing damage caused by the man’s long, forced dependence on a maniac for his basic needs, responds compassionately: “He is not to be blamed. His master controls him.”
Added to this we have Holmes in disguises, bamf!Holmes, Holmes calling people idiots and taking far too much delight in dancing circles around them, and of course utterly brilliant Holmes (though that’s a given), so it seems almost an embarrassment of riches that we also get peak sassy Holmes. He makes a number of delightful appearances, although my favorite is the following, which occurs after he has agreed to protect Enid from Rylott:
RYLOTT: What I ask you to do — what I order you to do is to leave my affairs alone. Alone, sir — do you hear me? HOLMES: You are perfectly audible.
As utterly delightful as all of this is, Holmes’s darker side is not entirely absent, at least in his personal habits—the cocaine does make its appearance. But more on that later.
John Watson on Stage
To be honest, I found myself rather anxious about how Doyle would depict Watson. We fans have been in the habit of discovering Watson between the lines of the cannon stories—as the man is far more interested in talking about Holmes than himself, it takes a bit of digging to discover Watson’s outstanding qualities. But what if the Watson we love so dearly is our own invention, and Doyle himself was simply uninterested in the man except as a conduit to portraying Holmes?
I really shouldn’t have worried.
It is true that Watson rather disappears into the background once Holmes is working. But that is not to say he becomes at all useless. In fact, the Watson in this play is quite simply our Watson—kind, steady, intelligent, dangerous, and with something of a temper hidden beneath the steady veneer.
In the play, Watson is the doctor who examines the body of the first murdered sister (who is here called Violet) two years before Holmes becomes involved in protecting the remaining sister, Enid. Watson, bright fellow that he is, clearly suspects that something is off. Ultimately there is nothing he can do at the time, but his involvement allows for one my favorite moments: Watson employing Holmes’s deductive skills. True, it is for a single,  relatively inconsequential matter; but he does it and he’s right and he impresses the whole room and guys! Watson! is! an! intelligent! man! I mean, we’ve all known that for forever, but its rather nice to get such a clear nod of agreement from Dyole.
In addition to his intelligence, Watson exhibits a empathy and compassion that in this story will be matched (not surpassed) only by that of Holmes. As an old friend of Rylott’s now-dead wife, Watson acts as comforter to the surviving girl. We are told that he came immediately and probably well in opposition to his own convenience when first he heard of the tragedy, and his treatment of Enid is gentle without being patronizing. Unsettled by the Rylott household and clearly wishing he could do more, he also repeatedly urges Enid to contact him if she has any suspicion of danger. All of this prompts Enid to declare: “Your kindness has been the one gleam of light in these dark days.” It is a lovely description of the man who has been a light in the dark for at least one other—the sort of testament we would have been unlikely to hear of if this story were reported through Watson’s own narration.
Again, I’ll leave the majority of his interactions with Holmes for the next section, but it is worth mentioning that there is no objection from him when Holmes turns down an easy 500 pounds. Watson is intelligent and he is good—he saw the signs of abuse and he would not have his friend benefit on those terms. These scenes also provide a wonderful dose of protective Watson. And while Holmes is of course at the head of the investigation, he and Watson are wonderfully in sync, and Watson proves his worth.
When it comes down to it, the Holmes and Watson in this play are transparently the two deeply compatible men we seek to dig out of cannon: mutually sharp and compassionate, courageous and quick to protect, with Holmes giving Watson stimulation and purpose and the means to aid others, and Watson providing Holmes with a firm right hand and a ready ear and a steadiness that counteracts the extremities that drive Holmes to cocaine. Watson and Holmes as Doyle portrayed them—as no other adaptation would portray them for far too many years—are just kinda perfect for each other.
But Watson is engaged.
So … What About Johnlock?
*buries head in hands* *giggles* *sobs* … Yeah. Yeah, it’s here. Yeah.
I really wasn’t sure what to expect from this play. I thought that perhaps the stage would strike Doyle as too exposed and vulnerable, or that perhaps he wouldn’t trust the actors, or that he would feel unsafe without the veneer of Watson’s narration—that, one way or another, he’d be persuaded to leave the gay subtext out of this one. But, um, Doyle? Buddy? Don’t get me wrong, I’m absolutely chuffed that you managed to avoid allegations a la Oscar Wilde. But also … how?
Honestly, I’ve always wondered whether Doyle was aware that he was writing a love story or whether that’s what wound up on paper regardless of his intent. This play just might be my answer.
a.) Sherlock Holmes: The Work as a disguise
The most blaring subtext is concentrated in Act II Scene II, where Holmes first enters the stage and his primary interactions with Watson occur. This play takes place during one of the dark times when Watson isn’t living at Baker Street, and when he visits Holmes to present him with Enid’s case, Holmes comes out disguised as a workman. (Before this Watson comments with dismay on the evidence of Holmes’s continued cocaine habits—this will be significant later). The disguised Holmes pokes fun at Watson, who doesn’t recognize him, accusing him of being responsible for Holmes’s untidy habits. There may be a rather tragic subtextual undertone to the whole conversation, but there’s too much else to discuss. So I’ll leave that aside and instead highlight the exchange that occurs when Holmes drops his disguise:
WATSON: Good Heavens Holmes! I should never have recognized you. HOLMES: My dear Watson, when you begin to recognize me it will indeed be the beginning of the end. When your eagle eye penetrates my disguise I shall retire to an eligible poultry farm.
Now, this could be innocent enough—just a fun way to introduce the clever detective. But if one is at all alert to the mere possibility of subtext, alarum bells should be ringing full force at the fact that the first on-stage interaction between these two characters consists of Holme demonstrating his ability to hide his true identity from Watson, and then saying that if he was unable to deceive Watson it would literally be the end of his life as he knows it. And it’s worth taking note of his phrasing: not “when you begin to recognize my disguises,” but rather “when you begin to recognize me.” Is this just a matter of professional pride, or is there something deeper that Holmes is afraid of having discovered?
But you know, maybe I’m just reading into this. This is a story about preventing Enid’s murder, its got nothing to do with romance or love, that would be thematically inconsistent and out of place—
HOLMES: Well, Watson, what is your news? WATSON: Well, Holmes, I came here to tell you what I’m sure will please you. HOLMES: Engaged, Watson, engaged! … The successful suitor shines from you all over.
Oh. Okay then.
Now, it is important to understand that Watson’s marriage has literally nothing to do with the Rylott plot. The engagement in no way affects Watson’s movements, and Mary never appears on stage. No; the first half of this scene is devoted entirely to introducing us to Holmes—the few clients he sees in this section are clearly selected to give us a sense of his character, methods, and values. That means that for some reason Doyle thought that a proper understanding of Holmes requires a discussion of love and marriage—specifically, Watson’s marriage.
Watson, being an imbecile as well as an intelligent man, thinks Holmes will be pleased with his news. Holmes rises to the occasion as best he can, calling the news “better and better” when he discovers Mary Morstan is the woman Watson has chosen, but not before he lets slip the sentence: “What I had heard of you, or perhaps what I had not heard of you, had already excited my worst suspicions.” Worst suspicions, Holmes? I thought this was supposed to be giving you pleasure? Well, perhaps he’s merely being facetious.
But next moment he slips again, saying, “You lucky fellow! I envy you.” When Watson suggests that Holmes might find a woman of his own one day, Holmes cryptically replies: “No marriage without love, Watson.” This might have been the first line that really floored me—the bare fact of Holmes’s conviction that he will never love a woman (‘woman,’ of course, being implied in the concept of marriage at the time). But when Watson asks why, Holmes falls back on the “[love] would disturb my reason” nonsense.
Now to be clear, I understand that Holmes is specifically discussing romantic love here, and that there is no connection between a lack of romantic attachment and a lack of sentiment and care for others generally. But here’s the thing: Holmes’s self descriptor doesn’t depict him as aromantic—i.e., ‘I just don’t feel romantic stuff.’ It depicts him as a reasoning machine—‘strong emotions disrupt my process.’ And in context of literally every friggin thing he does in this entire play, that’s nonsense. It is abundantly clear that reason is his tool, but compassion and sentiment are his motives.
One might argue that this is slightly sloppy writing (it was composed in a hurry, after all), or that Holmes simply doesn’t have the words to describe his aromanticism. Yet just moments before he said he envied Watson’s relationship, and moments before that revealed himself to be a consummate actor whose very existence as he knows it depends on disguise …
The already unwieldy length of this analysis requires that I speed a bit through the goldmine that follows: through Holmes punting aside requests from a royal family and the actual Pope because Watson has a case in which he has a personal interest—and I can’t resist pointing out that Holmes says he will of course take the case if Watson has “any personal interest in it.” It’s not ‘I’ll make time in my busy schedule if this is really very important to you,’ it’s ‘oh, you have a thing that you at least kinda sorta care about? The Pope can wait.’ I must gloss over Holmes transparently wanting to get as much of Watson’s company as he can, declaring that he has always seen Watson as his partner, and wishing for a plaque with his and Watson’s names on it, despite heavy implications that Watson has been almost entirely absent from Holmes’s work for some time. I’ll just mention in passing the truly remarkable number of “my dear fellows” and “my dear Watsons" Holmes manages to drop in a brief space of time, his clear desire to protect Watson from the dangers of the case despite later informing Enid that he is “a useful companion on such an occasion,” and his cry of “No, Watson, no!” when his friend leaps up to protect him from the poker Rylott is threatening him with.
I will not, however, pass over what occurs when Watson leaves Holmes, intending to meet him at the train station later that day. Watson’s final words on his way out are: “Good bye—I’ll see you at the station,” to which Holmes replies, “Perhaps you will,” adding to himself: “Perhaps you will! Perhaps you won’t!” Ah, what’s that? On about disguising yourself from your best friend again, eh Holmes? But then, within the play this refers to the fact that Holmes intends to actually disguise himself at the train station, so it has a literal meaning and not a metaphorical one, it has nothing to do with a deeper hiddeness, certainly nothing to do with love—
HOLMES: Ever been in love Billy? BILLY: Not of late years, sir. HOLMES: Too busy, eh? BILLY: Yes, Mr. Holmes. HOLMES: Same here. Got my bag there, Billy? BILLY: Yes, sir. HOLMES: Put in that revolver. BILLY: Yes, sir. HOLMES: And the pipe and pouch. BILLY: Yes, sir. HOLMES: The lens and the tape? BILLY: Yes, sir. HOLMES: Plaster of Paris, for prints? BILLY: Yes, sir. HOLMES: Oh, and the cocaine.
Oh … oh. Shit.
Please understand that this exchange—consisting of Holmes again raising the topic of love immediately after returning to the subject of his disguise, both of which he addresses as soon as Watson has left, as if he could not discuss them in front of his friend—comes apropos of nothing except Watson’s announcement of his engagement far back at the beginning of the scene. And I don’t see how the way he raises the subject and dismisses it can be seen as anything but the covering of some deep emotion—there is longing in the way he immediately brings it up, showing that it has stuck in his mind the whole while, and something tragic in the way he next-moment dismisses the clear preoccupation with the claim of being ‘too busy,’ clearly echoing the ‘I envy you … love is not for me’ progression of his earlier exchange with Watson.
And I get that in theory this longing for but dismissal of love could be read in a number of ways besides a socially forbidden love for his recently engaged partner. One might argue, for example, that he is aromantic but lonely and longing for the consistency of attachment others find in romantic love, or that he’s bursting with all sorts of hetero affections that he has chosen to sacrifice for the sake of The Work.
I would simply ask any inclined towards those arguments to consider the framing of this scene. I would ask them to question why ACD chose to introduce and conclude the scene which functions as an introduction to Holmes with the detective’s ability and need to disguise himself from Watson specifically, immediately juxtaposed with discussions of romantic love and Holmes’s desire for it which is clearly present but immediately veiled—disguised?—by his commitment to the work, with the cocaine hovering ominously behind. Then consider that between these mirrored book-ends we watch Holmes allow the man from whom he must disguise himself to disrupt the flow of the work which he claimed was supreme, making clear his wish that Watson be drawn into that work—a desire counteracted only by the transparent fact that he would prefer to risk his own bodily injury rather than put his friend in harm’s way. Add to all of this that Doyle works in a mention of the Milverton case and thus allows Holmes to comment on how his ruse to undermine Milverton involves courting and being courted by a woman and how distasteful he finds the experience and—well, you much reach your own conclusions. I have reached mine.
b.) Watson: Substitutionary desire
I began by speaking of Holmes because the subtext is monumentally more apparent on his part, and unlike Holmes it would be easy and even (though I cringe to say it) reasonable to read Watson as a comfortable heterosexual in this play. Does this mean that Doyle wrote one of those dreadful adaptations in which Holmes is pining away with an unrequited love for a Watson who is incapable of returning his romantic affections?
Not necessarily. As far as I can tell, without the clear implication of Sherlock’s affections one would be on shaky ground arguing that Watson was intended as anything besides a Hetero Bro. However, the clear coding of Holmes as in love with Watson causes one to wonder whether the affection might not be returned, and the results of investigation are inconclusive but intriguing.
Although he doesn’t make an appearance until the second act, Holme is mentioned by Watson in the first scene. Assuring Enid that she can turn to him if she is in any need, he admits that there is little he can do on his own. But he then adds: “I have a singular friend—a man with strange powers and a very masterful personality. We used to live together, and I came to know him well. Holmes is his name—Mr. Sherlock Holmes. It is to him I should turn if things looked black for you. If any man in England could help it is he.”
To be fair, it is not unusual in stories for someone to describe the hero in grandiose terms before he is seen directly by the reader/audience. Still, that’s quite a way to describe one’s friend. I find myself particularly fixating on “strange powers and a very masterful personality.” You do realize that you could have just said he’s smart, right Watson? I mean, maybe things were different back then, but if I described my friend as having a ‘masterful personality’ and then tried to claim they were my platonic bestie, I’m pretty sure I’d get my fair share of dubious glances.
Watson mentions his friend once more when his application of Holmes’s methods to clear up a detail of the investigation prompts an impressed exclamation from the coroner, to which Watson responds: “I have a friend, sir, who trained me in such matters.”
So at the very least, we have a Watson who idolizes, respects, relies on, and emulates his friend—all of which makes the fact that he is no longer living with Holmes something of a puzzle.
You see, the play never gives us a reason for Watson having moved out. The comment to Enid in which he mentions that they “used to live together” occurs two years before Sherlock becomes involved with the case and Watson becomes engaged to Mary, so it clearly has nothing to do with her. Yet not only has he moved out, his involvement in the cases is implied to have dwindled significantly or even stopped altogether—in one of the saddest lines of the play, Holmes comments that of course Watson wouldn’t remember Milverton because: “it was after your time.”
But why these degrees of separation? At no point are there signs of any ill-will between the friends. The danger certainly wasn’t an issue for Watson: when Rylott threatens Holmes Watson literally “jumps” to protect him, and he insists on sharing the danger of the Rylott house. Nor does it seem viable to speculate that Baker Street’s location became inconvenient for Watson—the speed with which Rylott makes his way to Watson’s home and from there to Baker Street demonstrates that they still live quite close. One might more plausibly theorize that Watson was becoming more invested in his medical practice and involvement in Holmes’s work was interfering, but why would ACD make an alteration so irrelevant to the story and then not even explain it? After all, the friends were still living together in the short story from which this is adapted. What could be the point of such a change?
Well, the fact is, while their bond is undeniable and remarkably strong, there are hints of something … off between the friends. Despite claiming to see Watson as his equal partner, Holmes fails to communicate with him about how they will be involved in the Rylott case, telling Watson to come on the 11:15pm train but neglecting to mention that he will be going to the house in disguise some hours earlier. The motive behind this omission is unclear—he previously tried to dissuade Watson from joining the case on account of the danger, so perhaps Holmes intends for Watson to give up and stay away when Holmes does’t appear. (Watson, of course, comes anyhow). Or perhaps Holmes wished to be apart from Watson for a time in the wake of hearing of his engagement (Holmes calling for the cocaine comes unsettlingly to mind here) but knew Watson wouldn’t allow him to go to Rylott’s alone. But whatever Holmes’s motive, Watson knows only that he has been excluded and cut out. Similarly, if in the past he has sensed that Holmes was on some level disguising himself from him would he would not have been likely to imagine a flattering cause. One cannot help but wonder whether it is these exclusions that cause Watson, despite inserting himself determinately when Holmes’s safety is at stake, to feel that he must offer to remove himself from the room when Holmes calls in clients. Certainly Watson has no inkling that Holmes might be in love with him—no kind friend who suspected as much would introduce his engagement by saying: “I came here to tell you what I am sure will please you.”
This then, is what we have: two men who deeply admire each other, long for one another’s company, and would clearly die for one another, and yet one of them is hiding and the other running first from the house and then into marriage. We have good reason to believe the one is hiding because he fears revealing his love; is it unreasonable to suppose the other is running for the same reason? Is it strange to think that Watson, feeling unable to trust to his powers of disguise in the way Holmes can, feeling the continual sting of Holmes hiding from him and cutting him off and unable to interpret those actions as anything besides distrust or indifference, would have sought safety in distance and ultimately comfort in binding himself to another?
A final note: we know nothing about Mary in this play. Despite having come in part to announce his engagement, Watson has no rhapsodies to offer on behalf of his fiancee—he seems far more interested in Holmes’s propensity for love, and, failing that, in Holmes’s work. Although Holmes’s (admittedly not impartial) deductions imply that Watson is genuinely pleased with his engagement, we learn precisely two details about Mary, both from Holmes: first that she has red hair, and second that Watson chose a woman who Holmes “met and admired.” Despite their seemingly limited contact over the past two years, Watson still seems unable to be married without at least some reference to Sherlock Holmes.
c.) Sorry … have some petty ACD as recompense
I feel I owe you an apology. I am aware that if you had the patience to read my ridiculously long ramble and are convinced by my interpretation of the Holmes and Watson’s relationship in the play, your ‘reward’ is having a dark but ultimately triumphant detective story transformed into a fucking tragedy that ends with two broken hearts. All I can offer is the comfort of knowing that for 130 years neither marriage nor death nor the near erasure of Watson from the first forty years of stage and film adaptations have been able to keep these two apart. They will find their way back to one another.
Oh, and you also might enjoy hearing that this play is totally ACD’s revenge on heteronormativity.
Okay, I can’t prove that. But it really looks like it. You may be aware of the 1988 play Sherlock Holmes, written by Doyle and William Gillette. If you’re like me a week ago, you may not know that Doyle wrote the original script himself, and Gillette became involved only when Doyle’s script was rejected and the producer urged him to bring Gillette on to rewrite it. I like to imagine that the rejection letter went something like: “Look, buddy, you can’t have Holmes staring forlornly after Watson while instigating a wistful conversation about love with Billy. You just can’t,” but realistically we don’t know why the first draft was rejected. But we do know that Doyle specifically requested that Gillette not give Holmes a (female) love interest, and that Gillette sent Holmes off into the sunset with a woman anyway (x).
Then, eleven years later with a failing theater on his hands, Doyle locks himself away in a room and says, “Fuck it. Imma write a Holmes play, and when I introduce him the first thing everyone is going to know is that he’ll never marry a woman, and the last thing the introduction will tell them is that he’ll never marry a woman and—you know what, I’ll take that Milverton story where Holmes groans about needing to date a woman and throw that in the middle.” And that’s true of the play even if you don’t buy the queer reading. But also, its super gay.
And frankly I just love that not only did Doyle refuse to give in to society’s attempt to fit his story into their heteronormative mold, it actually worked and Doyle made up all the money he was poised to lose and more by shoving a gay love story into his audience’s face.
Well done, ACD, well done.
Conclusion: Should You Read It?
I mean, I think my answer is fairly obvious by now. If you’re interested and have the time, it is 100% worth it. And I hope it doesn’t feel like I’ve spoiled all the good parts. There are reams of gems I didn’t even allude to—and that’s not counting everything I doubtless missed.
I just have one request: if you do read the play and end up posting about it on tumblr, would you tag me in your comments? Hearing someone else’s thoughts on this hidden treasure would be a delight.
Biden, Pitching Stimulus, Promises Milestones for Vaccines and Checks WASHINGTON — President Biden said on Monday that his administration was on pace to achieve two key goals by March 25: 100 million shots of Covid-19 vaccines since his inauguration and 100 million direct payments under his economic relief bill. The announcement was the first in what promises to be a series of end-zone dances that Mr. Biden and administration officials are set to stage this week as they promote the $1.9 trillion package that the president signed into law last week. “Shots in arms and money in pockets. That’s important,” Mr. Biden said in a brief address from the White House. “The American Rescue Plan is already doing what it was designed to do: make a difference in people’s everyday lives.” Over the weekend, the Treasury Department began issuing direct electronic payments of $1,400 per person, as authorized by the law, to low- and middle-income Americans. The United States has administered 92.6 million vaccine doses since Jan. 20, when Mr. Biden took office, according to data released on Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At the current pace of vaccinations, the country will pass 100 million doses before the end of the week, well ahead of the president’s promise of March 25. Mr. Biden had set the goal of 100 million doses before taking office, and he has repeatedly heralded the country being on pace to meet it, though many public health experts say it is relatively easily attainable. The relief plan also includes dozens of other provisions that have yet to be carried out, such as new monthly checks for parents, $350 billion for state and local governments and additional relief for the unemployed. With so much money at stake and Republicans criticizing the package as wasteful, Mr. Biden vowed to bring “fastidious oversight” to the relief bill in order to ensure that it is distributed quickly and equitably. He introduced Gene Sperling, a longtime Democratic policy aide who advised Mr. Biden’s presidential campaign last year, as his pick to oversee spending from the relief package. Mr. Sperling will be a senior adviser to the president and a White House employee, operating independently from an oversight commission established by Congress during the pandemic that consists of inspectors general from various agencies. “We have to prove to the American people that their government can deliver for them, and do it without waste or fraud,” Mr. Biden said. His remarks came as his team prepared to fan out across the country for a week of sales pitches for a bill that has proved very popular with voters but garnered zero Republican votes. Mr. Biden will visit Delaware County, Pa., on Tuesday and appear with Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday in Atlanta, which helped deliver Democrats the Senate majority that made the relief plan possible. A group of administration officials, including the first lady, Jill Biden, and Ms. Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, will make their own trips. Ms. Harris and her husband landed in Las Vegas for an event on Monday afternoon, while Dr. Biden finished an event in New Jersey. The road show is an effort to avoid the messaging mistakes of President Barack Obama’s administration, which Democrats believe failed to continue vocally building support for his $780 billion stimulus act after it passed in 2009. The challenge for the Biden administration will be to highlight less obvious provisions, including the largest federal infusion in generations of aid to the poor, a substantial expansion of the child tax credit and increased subsidies for health insurance. Mr. Sperling’s challenge will be to meet Mr. Biden’s promises of transparency and accountability for those programs. The president and White House officials called Mr. Sperling well qualified for the task. He was the director of the National Economic Council under Mr. Obama and President Bill Clinton. In the Obama administration, where he first served as a counselor in the Treasury Department, Mr. Sperling helped to coordinate a bailout of Detroit automakers and other parts of the administration’s response to the 2008 financial crisis. Frequently Asked Questions About the New Stimulus Package How big are the stimulus payments in the bill, and who is eligible? The stimulus payments would be $1,400 for most recipients. Those who are eligible would also receive an identical payment for each of their children. To qualify for the full $1,400, a single person would need an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or below. For heads of household, adjusted gross income would need to be $112,500 or below, and for married couples filing jointly that number would need to be $150,000 or below. To be eligible for a payment, a person must have a Social Security number. Read more. What would the relief bill do about health insurance? Buying insurance through the government program known as COBRA would temporarily become a lot cheaper. COBRA, for the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, generally lets someone who loses a job buy coverage via the former employer. But it’s expensive: Under normal circumstances, a person may have to pay at least 102 percent of the cost of the premium. Under the relief bill, the government would pay the entire COBRA premium from April 1 through Sept. 30. A person who qualified for new, employer-based health insurance someplace else before Sept. 30 would lose eligibility for the no-cost coverage. And someone who left a job voluntarily would not be eligible, either. Read more What would the bill change about the child and dependent care tax credit? This credit, which helps working families offset the cost of care for children under 13 and other dependents, would be significantly expanded for a single year. More people would be eligible, and many recipients would get a bigger break. The bill would also make the credit fully refundable, which means you could collect the money as a refund even if your tax bill was zero. “That will be helpful to people at the lower end” of the income scale, said Mark Luscombe, principal federal tax analyst at Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting. Read more. What student loan changes are included in the bill? There would be a big one for people who already have debt. You wouldn’t have to pay income taxes on forgiven debt if you qualify for loan forgiveness or cancellation — for example, if you’ve been in an income-driven repayment plan for the requisite number of years, if your school defrauded you or if Congress or the president wipes away $10,000 of debt for large numbers of people. This would be the case for debt forgiven between Jan. 1, 2021, and the end of 2025. Read more. What would the bill do to help people with housing? The bill would provide billions of dollars in rental and utility assistance to people who are struggling and in danger of being evicted from their homes. About $27 billion would go toward emergency rental assistance. The vast majority of it would replenish the so-called Coronavirus Relief Fund, created by the CARES Act and distributed through state, local and tribal governments, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. That’s on top of the $25 billion in assistance provided by the relief package passed in December. To receive financial assistance — which could be used for rent, utilities and other housing expenses — households would have to meet several conditions. Household income could not exceed 80 percent of the area median income, at least one household member must be at risk of homelessness or housing instability, and individuals would have to qualify for unemployment benefits or have experienced financial hardship (directly or indirectly) because of the pandemic. Assistance could be provided for up to 18 months, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. Lower-income families that have been unemployed for three months or more would be given priority for assistance. Read more. He advised Mr. Biden’s campaign informally in 2020, helping to hone the campaign’s “Build Back Better” policy agenda. Friends have described Mr. Sperling in recent months as eager to join the administration; he had been mentioned as a possible appointee to lead the Office of Management and Budget after Mr. Biden’s first nominee for that position, Neera Tanden, withdrew amid Senate opposition. Mr. Sperling’s challenge with the rescue plan will be different than the one Mr. Biden faced in 2009, because the relief bill differs starkly from Mr. Obama’s signature stimulus plan. The Biden plan is more than twice as large as Mr. Obama’s. It includes money meant to hasten the end of the pandemic, including billions for vaccine deployment and coronavirus testing. The plans also have similarities, including more than $400 billion each in total spending for school districts and state and local governments. Oversight of the $1.9 trillion relief legislation is currently expected to rely on the byzantine oversight architecture that was established in the stimulus packages Congress passed last year. The new effort will continue to rely on the Government Accountability Office and the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee, a panel of inspectors general from across the federal government. Less clear is the fate of the Congressional Oversight Commission, the five-person bipartisan panel that was created to oversee the $500 billion Treasury Department fund that supported the Federal Reserve’s emergency lending programs and loans to airlines and companies that are critical to national security. The commission currently has only three members, and the Fed programs concluded at the end of last year. The commission’s report in January said that it planned to continue “analyzing loans, loan guarantees and investments that were made prior to program termination” and producing reports. It is not clear if the existing mechanisms will be sufficient for overseeing the money in the new relief package, which will pump billions of dollars into states and cities. Additional oversight measures are likely to be needed. A Treasury official said that the department would set up a process to monitor the use of funds that are being sent to states to ensure that they are used according to the eligibility requirements in the law. Like many Americans in the pandemic, Mr. Sperling will have to coordinate and navigate those efforts virtually, at least at first. Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, said on Monday that Mr. Sperling would work remotely from his home in California until he is vaccinated. Let’s talk money — a core concern of any divorce experience. Most of us tend to think about money in terms of dollars and cents; about making the “right” financial choices. Money, however, is a much more complex part of our lives. Money has the capacity to trigger powerful subjective emotions in everyone. It symbolizes very different things to different people. Our feelings about money and how to manage it are largely dependent on our own unique family history.
In an earlier newsletter, I spoke of the goals of divorce as twofold; severing both the legal bonds and the emotional bonds. A viable divorce can only result from a careful and balanced consideration of these two distinct needs. Since money is intimately connected with divorce and divorce attorneys play an instrumental role in assisting their clients to create successful financial resolutions, it is imperative that they understand how the hot button of money can evoke emotional fireworks and disrupt the resolution of financial matters.
How Attitudes And Feelings Towards Money Impact Relationships
An individual’s interaction with money is one of the most important relationships in his or her life. The way someone feels about money says more about them than they may realize.
Usually, money is thought of in black-and-white terms — either there is enough of it or there isn’t. The truth is that money is chock full of psychological, emotional and symbolic meanings. A person’s relationship with money mirrors his or her conflicts, vulnerabilities fears, needs and desires.
Think about it. Money affects career and relationship choices. It is reflected in personal matters of control, self-esteem and even contributes to your overall sense of well-being. Most of the decisions people makes are formed, in part, by their individual beliefs about money.
Equating love and money, something frequently learned from one’s nuclear family, is an example of how money and feelings can be intertwined. Parents who don’t spend enough time with their children often say “I love you” by showering them with material gifts. When these children become adults, they can easily feel unloved unless that love is demonstrated with some material item.
An individual’s self-esteem can directly impact financial decisions as well as spending habits. If someone feels they don’t measure up to their own expectations or those of others, they might find themselves making costly and unnecessary purchases that only temporarily soothe their feelings of inadequacy and low worth.
Depression, anger, retaliation, boredom, envy, and the need to control others — all of these emotions can affect financial decisions. Emotional spending can be expensive and destructive.
Ideas about money can be gender-based. To many women, desiring money is considered greedy. Talking about it and going after it are unlady like. It is not unusual for women to hand over their economic lives to their husbands. This results in a kind of denial about money which sounds something like this; “I’ll do what it takes to get money but I don’t want to think about it.”
Women also sometimes equate money and care taking. It is not uncommon for successful, high-income earners who are capable of financial self-reliance to look to their spouses to support them. In their “book of rules,” if a man truly loves and cares for them, he will be the provider.
While women typically view divorce as the loss of a relationship, men are more likely to think of divorce in terms of division of property and assets. Women may be reluctant to stop thinking in terms of “our property,” while their husbands have little difficulty avoiding an “our property” mind-set.
Finally, the meaning of “security” and how to attain it may have different meanings to the divorcing spouses. A person can feel secure even though he may not be secure at all. Conversely, a person can be secure feel totally insecure. These attitudes will surely affect negotiating financial settlements.
Money And Emotions = “Oil And Water”
When a marriage breaks up, the last thing anyone feels like doing is crunching numbers. In the grip of fear for one’s very survival, physically and emotionally, exercising rational judgement can be an uphill battle. Add to that individual idiosyncratic feelings about money and the reality that many human beings have difficulty making logical decisions when it comes to their personal finances, it is no wonder that divorcing people find themselves in need of solid financial and emotional advice.
Emotions and money are a dangerous combination.
During the divorce negotiations, they need to be kept separate. Like oil and water, trying to mix money and emotions is futile. When it comes to dealing with money,emotions can be the client’s worst enemy, leading to both higher legal bills and frazzled nerves.
So, how do you help your client keep emotions out of the picture when attempting to resolve money matters? The key is helping the client to understand that while divorce is an emotional experience, and heart-wrenching personal and financial decisions must be made, these decisions need to be entered into with a dispassionate and business-like frame of mind. In other words, they need to think of themselves as making a business deal, one in which emotions must not be permitted to influence sound judgement.
Put simply, there is no place for a vindictive attitude or guilty feelings. Unresolved emotions must be either left at home or worked through with the help of a divorce counselor.
Tips For Helping Your Clients Deal With The Pain Of Dividing The Assets
During the divorce negotiations, your clients sense of worth and value will be in different places. Some will have moved beyond the walking-wounded stage while others will still be seeking revenge.
Ideally, neither person is a victim or a bully, but rather is a decent human being who wants to deal fairly with their spouse in resolving economic issues. Unfortunately, the reality is that many will still be too overwhelmed by feelings of fear, self-pity, anger, failure, and guilt to behave rationally.
The following tips will help your clients to eliminate any tendencies they may have to endanger their long-term economic interests by allowing their emotions to impede their judgement.
Be Involved. This is the time to encourage clients to relinquish their murky and oblique relationship to money. It is not enough for them to want to feel financially secure. They need to learn to think about their money and examine it. If they have previously left money matters in their spouse’s hands, now is the time for them to assume responsibility for their own economic interests.
Commit To A Budget. As newly single people learning to manage money independently, clients need to understand the importance of successful budgeting. They need to be realistic about their spending habits and prepared to adapt their budget to adjust to any lifestyle changes that may occur, whether these changes are for the better or worse.
Communicate. Divorcing individuals need to develop and be encouraged to maintain a relationship with a competent financial advisor. This means selecting a professional with whom they are comfortable communicating how their financial plan is being maintained and making any adjustments along the way, as needed.
Develop a new mind set. Keep reminding clients that they have separate, distinct, and competitive economic interests with their spouse. If they are to competently take charge of their divorce, they must see their property in terms of “yours” and “mine,” and no longer view assets as “ours.”
Banish Guilt. If your client is tempted to relinquish their share of the assets, remind them that they cannot “buy” away his or her guilty feelings. Suggest to them that they seek help from a professional divorce counselor so that their guilt does not blind them to what is reasonable and appropriate.
Avoid Settling Prematurely. Be aware of those clients who want to settle for less than what they are entitled to simply because they want the divorce to be over. Reinforce their need to build a strong and healthy future for themselves and help them to see that avoidance behavior will be very costly in the long run.
Don’t Allow Feelings of Helplessness. If your client is stuck in the “woe is me” trap and is not producing the necessary documents and lists or is unwilling to discuss certain financial matters, remind the client that he has value and is capable of unwinding joint finances.
Stress Honesty. Suggest to clients that they do some introspection and assess how they really feel about money. They can ask themselves the following questions that may help identify the psychological factors driving their financial behaviour:
Is money a sign of power?
Do they use money to boost self-esteem?
Do they avoid budgeting?
Perhaps it is not more money they need to attain happiness, but instead a new state of mind about earning, spending and investing money.
Conclusion
Money carries multiple meanings to people and can trigger unique responses in them. Money is used to support, protect, honor, manipulate, reject and hurt others. Some divorcing people will lie and cheat for money, others will turn their backs on money to their own disadvantage.
Try telling someone who is in the throes of dividing marital property that “money doesn’t buy happiness.” It will not go over well. Divorcing men and women, overwhelmed by emotions, often react financially to their feelings. Sometimes, it is easier for them to make financial decisions about what they are entitled to based on hurt, anger or guilt rather than making a sound decision based on a working knowledge of finances.
When assisting their clients with the difficult task of dividing marital property, attorneys must do two things; validate their feelings and help them to keep these feelings separate from the business at hand. Financial decision making cannot be a forum for expressing deep emotions. Clients need assistance to mindfully examine their finances and let go of any emotionally driven approach /avoidance relationship with this most fundamental part of their life.
