#stage adaptation

About a year ago, I had the idea that the Christmas Party AU would lend itself really well to a stage adaptation. A series of vignettes with a sort of quick punchy humor, of a bunch of weirdos hanging out at a Christmas party that is slowly going more and more wrong. There are some things I think would need to be changed, though.
Wrap up plot points. The CPAU is unfinished, so we should make it have, like, an ending. Have Sci confess (maybe on accident while he's flustered or something) Sci and Fell kiss, maybe it's revealed to everyone who spiked the eggnog 👀. Seeing as it's a Christmas party, they could open gifts, but we could also have it like:
Blue: Okay guys, let's open presents!
Everyone: *Sits around awkwardly*
Blue: You ... You guys brought presents, right?
Cut to black.
Make the characters human. Give them human names, too. So it's more digestible to a general audience, y'know? Instead of using magic to change his eyes, Edge just wears sunglasses. Geno wears some sort of bandaging with a really bad scar underneath. He's also cheating death, as it turns out, as his house has a forcefield around it that prevents anyone inside from dying, and without it, he would die himself.
Also, Reaper's status as the God of Death means he's allowed to stay non-human, and his name can stay the same. Fresh is also just called Fresh, we don't need to change that.
I think other than that, we'd just need to turn it into a script, find actors, and proform it around wintertime. I might have forgotten something else, but I think this is it. I do have, like, some specific ideas of how it could go, but here's a general thing. Bye!

Although this is a direct-to-video movie and not a theatrical movie, a small part of me feels like "Animaniacs: Wakko's Wish" could work as a stage production, even if it's just a musical production for schools and drama clubs.
One thing I would change is the scene of Dot dying where instead of faking it, her death would be real. And Wakko would sacrifice his wish for a ha'penny to instead wish for Dot to be brought back to life. I don't know what other changes would work, as I've only seen the climax and the ending of the film, but if anyone else has suggestions, feel free to comment your idea for a stage adaption of "Wakko's Wish" and what changes you would make.

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1990) 8/10
Tumblr media
Dir. Tom Stoppard
Tw: death, talks of sex, confusing banter
I've seen this film twice now in two different classes and both times I've had a blast watching it. It's witty and fun and keeps you on your toes the entire time. It makes way more sense if you read or watch hamlet first although it's not a nessceity. It's also one of those films that makes you seem more cultured and educated even though it's such a silly movie. I defintly recommend it but you have to actually pay attention while watching it or it won't make any sense.

WELCOME TO ODEUM.
Anchored in the Latin language, “odeum” (/ˈəʊdɪəm/) describes a small, roofed building which was primarily used for musical performances in the ancient Greece and Rome. Decades later, we mainly associate the word with its Greek translation “odeon” (/ˈəʊdɪən/) – the name of one of the biggest cinema chains in Europe. This crossover of ancient and modern correlation is what Odeum builds upon. This blog prides itself in merging stage and screen and therefore lays its focus on stage-to-screen adaptations or vice versa. A place where cinephiles and thespians come together to cherry pick the gems of stage or screen adaptations.
Now dive into a world of stage and screen and don't be afraid to put your own ideas forward! We can't wait to share our work and connect with you.

TheatrePass Diaries - Straight Line Crazy at The Shed
Tumblr media
Saw this about 10 days ago. This play super sold out by now, but I managed to get a front row ticket to a midweek matinee, the only okayish seats left, several weeks ago. In order to make it in the middle of the workday I had to extricate myself from a nego with an exec admin before she was done with me (impossible task) and I had to run to get there on time. I also didn't have a lot of time to compose an outfit so I had to default to a "rich asshole" look, saved by my favorite hat. The theatre is in Hudson Yards soo....just setting the stage here, no pun intended. I got there in a whole mood! They made us latecomers sit out the first 20 min and watch it on a little TV, and I didn't get in my good seat until intermission. The other late audience was...not great. Rich people and tourists. Like, really rich people. Maybe they also ran out of time getting dressed for the play and their default rich-asshole-in-Manhattan look is "emeralds and inject emergency fillers to leave the house"? When I finally got inside it was more of the same. It was fucking weird!
While we were waiting I considered buying a ticket to come back in a couple weeks, but the only tickets left were on the resale market for 3x face value, so I asked/flirted out of a(n extremely cute) usher/production manager type if she thought it was worth it to come back and she neatly evaded by assuring me I hadn't missed much. Heh. That was my fourth warning.
Alright I guess I think the story of getting there is more interesting than the play, which was...utter nonsense. On the plus side if you sit in the front row, which I did eventually, Ralph Fiennes will occasionally stare deeply into your eyes. On the downside -- everything else?!
No, no, not everything else: The inside of the theatre is actually pretty cool for all that it lives in a soulless skyscraper mall; at least for this play there's not really a bad seat in the house, including to my relief that front row. The costumes were nice and most of the actors were very good (Ralph Fiennes is incredible). Danny Webb played Gov Al Smith with a (fucking delightful) Brooklyn accent as broad as the East River and I literally (like, actually) laughed at his every line of dialogue, to the point that some biddy kept looking at me like I was committing a crime enjoying a bad play I paid hundreds of dollars to see. (It was maybe a crime.) And did I say about Ralph Fiennes looking into your eyes? He is breathtaking. Like I'm pretty sure he could compell with the power of his gaze, type thing.
But the play was utter nonsense!!! It was very much an adaptation of a veritable tome, and I can say with the confidence of one who merely skimmed it that the playwright didnt get the book. The resulting extreme abridgement felt more "textual butchery" than "high concept distillation," complete with awkward transitions, expository AND expositional monologues to the audience (uggggghhhh) and so little human insight that it rendered a biographical story nearly incoherent. I physically cringed a couple of times, up through and including the undeserved standing ovation at the end.
Did I mention Ralph Fiennes is incredible?

I have this ‘friend’ that I’ve complained about some on here. But I’m gonna complain more because they keep complaining about me on their social media. Except I’m not one to name names, so he is henceforth named Bees.
This ‘friend’ is now barely a friend. I finally finished my dnd campaign, and so I’ve pushed them to the edge of my social circle, under the guise we’re taking a break from TTRPGS. Bees is still in our group chat and discord bc he’s still friends with our other friends, but I pretty much just ignore his messages unless he butts into our convos, then I’m forced to interact.
Me and My husband were watching Phantom of the Opera (2004) the other day bc I saw an edit and I’ve never seen an adaptation of it. But we were absolutely loving it. So my husband popped into general on discord and was praising it. And being the absolute contrarian he is Bees was like “you know there’s a million times better version of the recorded stage play by ALW.” Like yes, we are aware it exists. And I would have *loved* to watch it too. But he is so fucking matter of fact about everything and constantly resolute that everything me and my husband likes is trash, that my husband trolled him and said that the movie was better. While I said that you can’t really compare a movie and a stage play because they are two fundamentally different things and that the whole reason we were praising the movie was because of the cinematography and special effects. Things not really comparable to each other when you look at a stage play versus a movie.
And he posted on his tumblr that it was a travesty and that we were ‘wrong’ and he made it out as if we absolutely loved the movie and said that the stage play was awful.

The Boys in the Band (1970, William Friedkin)
"What I am, Michael, is a 32 year-old, ugly, pock marked Jew fairy, and if it takes me a little while to pull myself together, and if I smoke a little grass before I get up the nerve to show my face to the world, it's nobody's god-damned business but my own. And how are you this evening?"

Whether they could've done this at the time, or if it can still be done today, what if "Animaniacs" had a stage musical?
The story is so far unknown, but if they make it into a jukebox musical of sorts, I know a couple of songs they could use, aside from the theme song and "Yakko's World". For instance, they could use "A Quake! A Quake!", which later could bridge into "Dot's Quiet Time", but that all I got for right now.
Characters such as Yakko, Wakko, and Dot would just be actors in mascot suits. As far as other characters are concerned, Pinky and The Brain could be featured two ways. In the scenes focusing on them, the backgrounds would be gigantic to give the perspective of being a mouse. Later, the actors playing Pinky and The Brain would use puppet versions of the characters whenever humans are involved.
This is all I got for now, but if anyone else has a general understanding, feel free to comment your suggestions for how you think an "Animaniacs" stage show would work out.
