i'm glad to hear it! the thing i have really missed about being on tumblr is being fucking sillygoofy about my own fic. you have to be an adult in the comments, y'know, and there's only so much room in an author's note for Japes and Goofs when you have to make time to outline non-tag warnings and link song attributions and thank your prompter and/or beta and flash an In Tonight's Performance The Role Of X Will Be Played By card as necessary and—
anyway.
#6 was indeed begun in my evernote drafts while waiting for the Fall Out Boy concert to begin and slowly sinking under a dose of unprescribed downers. i think maybe Pat Stump and Pete Wentz are not good at writing, like, "music"—many of those melodic lines are 100% reliant on "i have the range, stamina, and lack of understanding of what constitutes healthful singing of 23-year-old Patrick Stump" in order to function—but some of their word salad lyrics do make great titles, and except to dream sweet of me was kind of a banger from first principles. but then i was like "oh maybe this is my chance to drop while you're orbiting, might i? a potential fic title i've been holding in reserve for a few years now." but THEN i was like "in the spirit of continuing to tick boxes on my nonexistent List Of Languages I've Used For A Fic Title, and also in the spirit of what actually happens in the fic, why not trína chéile, le chéile, claochlaithe?" vote now on your phones!
okay but what is the fic actually ABOUT. right. what the fic is actually ABOUT is, i believe @tickldpnk8 commented on suffer that hurt that they wanted to see Lucienne tell Dream about her "pleasant" "conversation" with Desire, and to know how that would go. for my part, i didn't want to end revisionsverse without at least one more tender moment between Dream and Luce, because as much as i joke about this being the "Dream talks to all the women in his life au," the Danny/Luce relationship is really the heart of the thing. i also wanted there to be some reciprocity for Luce's courage in suffer that hurt (and during the years of Morpheus' captivity).
something that i think is not super important to fandom at large, but which is very important to ME, is the acknowledgement of female characters of color's emotional labor—not just "wow! you are so girlboss and yass kween and Greta Gerwig Barbie, just like we always knew you were!" but like, "you were brave and strong and i know you didn't really have a choice, but it matters that you endured, let me help you hold that for a while. i see you and i love you." it's the seeing that matters the most to me. not the assumption that She's Always Got It In Her, not the unbroken fortitude, but the acknowledgement of the person underneath. and like, Luce has seen the person underneath all of Dream's competing positionalities so much in this series—has helped shape that person for the reader in a lot of very real ways—so i wanted to get Dream looking back at her, through his own eyes, and showing us the person he loves.

Everyone is excited. Love the idea!

But debby downer jerk fucking Bakugou has to ruin everyone's parade.
"A fucking album? We're on a world tour and that's what you're thinking of, woman? We're fucking exhausted enough."
Everyday this bitchass always have something to say
And everyday you've had enough of his bitch ass
"Well, if you want this while band to sink down. I guess, I should stop writing. I'm not here to argue with you, Bakugou. I'm here to fucking help you. Whether you fucking hate it."

Before he could rage again and ignite another argument.
Kirishima, Sero and Mina all gave him a warning glare.
Especially, Kirishima.
This shit was going too far.
Didn't he remember his warning?
At this point, he really have to dig deep and send the message home.
"Katsuki. Talk to me, privately." Kirishima commands.
"Well, if you got something to fucking say. Just say it now." The blonde practically barks.
"Oh, I got a lot to say. But, I'm saving you the embarrassment from everyone. So, either we talk here or privately."

Anyways, Bakugou jumps up from his seat and grumbling along the way as he makes his way to the back of the plane.
That's when Kirishima slams him up the wall.
I know this is out character but I gotta-
"What is going on man?"
"There ain't nothing wrong with me-"
"Nothing wrong." Kirishima scoff "I told you about this. (First name) is here to stay and help. This is what we've been fucking fighting for. This is our dream. You're going to let it crash and burn? For what, some stupid fucking girl that clearly didn't care about you?"
"You don’t know shit-" Bakugou tries to shove but Kirishima overpowers him.
"I don't know shit." Kirishima mocks, "I know everything. I've seen it all with my own two eyes. I fucking know."
Bakugou was angry. Pissed even.
"I told you, we're moving forward... I hate to say this but it seems like we’re going without you.. " Kirishima pauses he calms down, "Look, I get it. You've been through a lot. But, if this is how much is affecting you. We'll have to part ways temporarily."
At this point, Bakugou's heart dropped to his stomach and his breath hitches.
Kirishima was serious about his threats
"We have to, Bakugou. We can't stay in the past. I know what happened. We know. I'm sorry. We're here for you. Right now, there are a lot of things you're through and have to unpack. Camie wasn't the best person. We're aware, now that she’s gone. This is your chance to get and ask for help. You're free now."
Kirishima gives Bakugou a firm pat on his back and he leaves.
Leaving Bakugou in his own broken thoughts.
There was about 5 hours left till you arrive in the US
Everyone was asleep at this point.
Except you, you're still revising and re-writing some of the lyrics.
The light above you was on.
It didn’t bother anyone. They were all in snooze land.
Well, except Bakugou.
He woke up because of the light.
He could never sleep with the light on
He sat up to get the eye mask then his naturally drawn into where the source of light is coming from.
It was you, your legs tucked in and you were furiously scribbling away
So deeply concentrated.
He stared for a while. Not noticing him wide awake and just watching you.
Eventually, he just left you in his own little world before falling back asleep.
FAST FORWARD
World tour has come to an end.
It was amazing!
You have never travelled this much your whole entire life,
You were so fucking excited.
Your excitement was so infectious.
Everyone (except Bakugou) all had one thought, 'How cute'
It made them smile uncontrollably.
You're always asking them to take a photo of you with the weirdest shit.
LIKE A FUCKING LAMPPOST?

And you're eating something. Mina would whip out her phone,
You're showing your plate of pasta or the flower shaped ice cream.
Your whole damn camera roll is just filled with random photos of random shit. Hell you even took photos of the damn seagulls.

Like that one funny hat you found.
Kirishima being buried in the sand in Barcelona with some sand titties.
Denki gave him the yitties.
You and Bakugou never interacted much at all.
Actually, he avoided you at all coats.
When you are on break from rehearsals and sound checks
He gets up and leaves for a cigarette break.
He only does this with you tho.
Bakugou was speaking Bakugou with everyone else

Jk, well the usual Bakugou. Calling them with some weird ass nickname and just acting the usual Bakugou
It would be for the better though instead of butting heads.
You all took a 2 weeks break.
This gave you chance to print out all the photos and keep in a photo album.

There are also constant reminder too to take a break
But it seems like you're the only person who isn't taking this time to take a break.
Everyone is out having fun,
So, Sero texted that you are all going to hang out and meet them at the station.
Well, you do need it. Since you've only been writing and working for a week in your shitty apartment.
When you got to the station, everyone was there (except Bakugou)
All dressed weirdly to hide their identity cause they're more famous than you
"Hey!" Mina waves her arms wildly,
"Hey, so where are we going?"
"We're going to Bakugou's house." Sero informs you.
Oh, you're shitting yourself.
You're VERY aware this man doesn't like you.
And now you're going to his house?
You're meeting the lord savior Jesus Christ much earlier than expected.
Kirishima can sense that you're pretty nervous.
Denki is all like, "DoN't WoRrY, bAbY gIrL. i'M hErE tO pRoTeCt YoU."
Throwing his arms around you.
On the way there, you're already fucking shaking.
Walking from the train station to his house.
You're feeling sick. You want to throw up.
Now, you don't know know that this man was rich, rich.

When the doorbell rang.
You're in fight or flight mode.
The person who opened it tho wasn't Bakugou.
Nope, it was a much older man.
It's his dad.
Now, you're wondering where the hell did he get his personality.
He lets you all in.
Not before making sure to shake your hand and welcome you into their home.
"Ah, you must be (First name), their new lead singer. Nice to meet you." “I’m Masaru. Katsuki’s father.”

"Now, I've been wondering when the hell are you brats going to visit us."

“Hey, ma.” Kirishima spoke up, “Where’s Katsuki?”
YOU CANT CONVINCE ME THAT KIRISHIMA WONT CALL MITSUKI ‘MA’ OR MASARU ‘PA’
“Said he needs to go somewhere.” Mitsuki rolls her eyes, “What? That brat didn’t tell you?”
She goes on a rant about needing to inform everyone especially if they’re coming over for dinner.
She sneaks in a little insult here and there too.
While, Mitsuki is throwing it down the kitchen. You all sat around in their sofa. Masaru is handing out some snacks and drinks.
Not gonna lie, you’re a little uncomfortable.
When, you stand up and try to help.
Mitsuki tells you to sit back down and relax

Everyone was chatting away and having fun.
When Bakugou finally arrives. Slamming the door behind him.
“I KNOW THAT AIN’T MY FUCKING YOU’RE SLAMMING BRAT!”
They’re getting into screaming matches.
Judging from everyone’s reaction. This was a normal occurrence between them.
Dinner was pleasant. The food was incredible.
Of course, you had to compliment the chef and Mitsuki was incredibly flattered.
She also shared that some of the veggies were grown by Masaru in their back garden.
THIS MAN DESERVES ALL THE PRAISE TOO OBVIOUSLY.
Everyone was having fun, chatting and laughing.
Something that was weirdly uncharacteristic though from one person in the room.
Bakugou.
You noticed that he was so quiet, he was barely eating and just staring at his plate.
He was just so lost in his own little world.
You do wonder what's going in his head.
Break was over, everyone got their well deserve rest.
Except you, cause you're a hardworking ass bitch.
This was going to be a long months of recording. A brand new project,
Immediately, Jirou turned to you the moment you walk into the office.
She's like "What you got?"
EVEN JIROU THE PRODUCER KNOW YOU'RE THAT BITCH.
There are going to be total of 10 songs in the new album
So, you present her your idea and the melody.
Obviously, since she's the producer, she will be the one who has the best and last calls on the final product.
Jirou would tell you; this way is better, add riff here, the runs would be better if it was this way in this part, the pitch is a little off try it this way, this line doesn't make sense can you revise it?
She's just so perfect and amazing.
Eventually, everyone started pouring in. They're pitching their own,
Even Bakugou was contributing into track playing a simple beat.
Everyone is having fun, chatting and sharing laughs in the writing process. Everything is going smoothly,
Mina also decided to film the whole process too. To post on the official YouTube Tokyo Lights channel.
But, you sat back as everyone chatted among themselves.
You're quiet, thinking over the whole song.
Something wasn't clicking with this one. There's something missing...
"Hey, Ei."
"Oh! We're in the nickname stage now?" He grins playfully, "So, what's up?"
"Can you sing?"
"Huh?"
Now, everyone is getting excited.
(Except Kirishima)
Who is protesting about it cause he's never sang before or even been recorded (Sero says otherwise cause he's heard him singing his heart out while he's in the bathroom)
Kirishima is blushing because he's embarrassed about it.
In their past 3 albums, no one else has sang except their former lead singer.
This is really the start of a new beginning.
This album is a bit personal to you.
It was an open letter to your former lover to say you weren't in the good place to love nor did that person deserve your love.
You're fixing a lot of damage done.
It starts off by blocking Shindo's phone number and booking a therapy right away.
The next week, Bakugou sees you outside his therapist office.

Watched Chess Netherlands today because... well, I can 🙃 It was surprisingly not all horrible. Definitely flawed and problematic but it had some parts I really liked! Of course I had lots of thoughts again so here is me venting them. 99% sure no one else cares about Dutch Chess but what the hell, tumblr is for screaming into the void right? ✨️
Act I
- You can instantly tell this is a Dutch production because the championships take place in what looks like a school gym. I mean we do our rubiks cube tournaments there. Is fine for chess, no?
- Explaining chess to the audience bc that's what the show is really missing
- Many Svenska Vibes
- Anatoly with an i is the most Dutch Soviet Russian i've ever met. Just, no nonsense. 'go take care of my children woman.' Calling each other names is how we show affection <3
- I will say the boys (Anatoli's kids) playing chess during the opening is a nice touch
- Story of Chess also has very to the point lyrics. "chess requires reticence so u don't kill each other" see now this actually sets up the show real well :)
- Awkward humor no one laughs at ✅️
- Anatoli's kind of a downer
- Freddie's sort of charming but his relationship with Florence is gonna be garbage i can tell
- strike 1: ableism
- (honestly he just reminds me of every Dutch white guy on tv)
- strike 2: assault
- Florence is already so done with his shit good for her
- also "with me there, he is brilliant" tru tru
- Singing Nobody's Side while random people have a lil party behind her?

- Arbiter leads morning exercise... ok well why not
- No dancing during the chess game. It's cool we can just watch two guys play chess from a distance for a couple minutes. Fun times.
- Freddie sticks his gum under the table real subtle like he hasn't got multiple cameras pointed at him right now
- Actually on second thought i think the chess game might be better without the dancing. Characters are doing interesting things. The contrast between Anatoli sitting stiffly at the table while Freddie is prancing around fistfighting the cameras is Most Amusing :)
- Did he just try to make Anatoli's move for him omg 🤣
- Freddie @ arbiter "uh it might be time u keep things under control around here" and off he runs HE'S SUCH A LITTLE SHIT ngl i kinda love him here
- However Florence's defense of him just seems completely unreasonable considering toli literally just. sat there. the whole time.
- Anatolyi gets the 'i'm ridiculous' monologue like in Svenska
- 'Hey my people killed your people oops now let me sing a song in the language you probably don't remember and it's somehow romantic and not creepy or overstepping any boundaries at all :)'
- Running away from Molokov in a shittier version of Svenska. Meh. But again they are aware of the lack of embassies in and around Merano which I do appreciate bc i'm pedantic like that
- Freddie: hey what's she doing with that Russian
Freddie: hmmm idk
Freddie: they're definitely talking abt me tho 🤨
- Flo & toli have a healthy conversation about the fact that he just left his kids behind i support that!!
- However this timing/setting for Anthem sucks. He's just singing it to Florence. And it's literally about how he misses his family? Weak. This needs to be an epic declaration of love for his homeland to all the world not whining to your girlfriend. Ugh can't believe they fucking ruined Anthem!
- So far all of this strikes me as discount Svenska but without the investment in Flonatoly and the only thing it's really got going for it is a handful of good lines BUT we'll see about act 2...
Act II
- Why the fuck would you start your second act with Merchandisers?
- Nice audience interaction though, it doesn't completely not work
- But following it up with Heaven Help My Heart is hmmmmmm really not ideal pacing-wise.
- Freddie's woman verse is even more cringe in Dutch i can't accurately translate it but it's so..... yikes..... The word he uses instead of "woman" ("popje") literally means "little doll/puppet" (but with slightly different connotations). It's sometimes used as a term of endearment but in this scene it is very much derogatory and ew.
- "here I stand wondering / if I ever knew you / have I ever really known who you are?" I like this translation!
- Pity the Child pulls no punches (does it ever?) He's so pathetic, he's such an asshole, and as a teacher I weirdly feel this one (at one point he talks about how no one ever noticed him at school either and just... oof don't get me started). Also the desperate rapid-fire chess game he plays against himself in the musical break and during the final verse--that needs to be in more versions holy fuck go watch this bit it's GOOD!!
- The Deal but without a political angle. Fascinating.
- No
- no. no no no i hate this i hate this Freddie wouldn't sacrifice his game not even for Florence NO. CANCELED.
- Interestingly instead of honey/parner, Freddie uses the same word as in the woman verse when he's talking to Florence during The Deal but this time it's the endearment variant. That's a little bit problematic.
- Molokov's plan is still to bring Flo and Sveta together even though Anatoli is now supposed to win 🤷‍♂️
- Anatoli casually downs several shots of liquor (vodka?) during Soviet Machine. not sure this will help him win the game but at least he sleeps through Russian Guy screaming that final whoooooooo high note in his ear
- Florence tests Freddie's chair... demands they bring a different one... is she still working for him? idk. I'm guessing it's meant to be sweet but it just looks silly to me idk
- Fuck reverse I Know Him So Well honestly. "he wants me / no he wants me" boo fucking hoo. You two deserve each other.
- Oh! Oh! Talking Chess, yay! 😁
- Gosh this is actually really cute?!? Freddie literally just came to discuss this random chess gambit he came across and thought was interesting? Nothing even to do with their current game just 'hey found this thing i thought you might like and i like and can we be friends now i really like chess 😶'
- Unlike in Svenska and RAH, I actually don't know for sure who is going to win this game. They do a good job of making this really about chess in the end. I like it.
- Freddie reminding toli it's about chess even during their match now that is the freddie i came to see!
- He calmly sips his water as Sveta and Florence are physically removed from the premises
- It is Quite Unfortunate that this production hates women...
- Really they seem to only be here to get in the men's way. Ugh.
- I don't support any of the relationships except Freddie and Toli being pen pals and playing long distance chess for the rest of their lives.
- Ending feels a little OOC but still nice to see some healthy Freddie & Flo interaction for once 😌
tldr; not the worst production out there, worth watching if you've already seen Svenska and don't mind Freddie being the most likeable character. (okay likeable is not the right word he sucks but, you know. He reminds me of RAH Freddie but slightly more yike.) PTC and Talking Chess are highlights!

Review #96: Automatic For The People, R. E. M.
Are you very depressed? Me too. Automatic For The People is rich, beautiful, tonally downer music for sad people who occasionally have bright sunny days.
It describes such a complex sadness, and that’s something I love about it. In Nightswimming, we aren’t just swimming at night, we are “pining for the moon”. Who among us sad losers doesn’t pine for the moon from time to time? Hmm? And we are doing so alongside glorious strings, oddly chirpy piano, and what I believe to be a damn OBOE. How often do we get to hear an oboe? Do you know? I do. It’s not that often. It’s not.
I have complicated feelings about Everybody Hurts. I was only four when this record came out. But this song didn’t go anywhere for a really long time. It was constantly on the radio well into my teens. The riff becomes very monotonous. What is supposed to be a comfort, a message that you’re not alone, can kind of eventually sound like, hey get over it because your problems are the same as everybody else’s, everyone has heard this song too, and everyone kind of hates it by now. It’s been a long ass time since I’ve spent time with it, and it might just have been long enough. Let’s try again in a few years.
I have always liked R.E.M. and a lot of their songs well enough, but maybe never known their albums inside out. More like, well versed in their radio hits, and I definitely always had an attitude about them. I wouldn’t admit to liking them, kinda thing. Imagine my surprise when I stuck this album on for reviewing purposes and I started singing all the words to all the album tracks? I knew them all. All of them! Suddenly I was taken back to Sunday afternoons in my house when it was time to clean, or cook, or whatever you know, just boring nothing Sunday stuff, and I guess this one was one that my Mom liked. It must have reverberated through the house and I must have absorbed it. This is the way I’ve come to know and love a few artists and albums that I believe I previously held disdain for. Over time, I have reluctantly accepted that they’re just pretty fucking good, and I can’t hate it just because my Mother likes it. Simon and Garfunkel being probably the greatest, and most painful example. Sigh.
As annoying as this might be, Drive, the opening track, is pretty joyous to relive. I mean, it’s the opposite of joyous in that it’s a huge dose of frowny-face sounds, but joyous in that it’s a song about challenging the status-quo by voting (seriously, it is — they were a big part of the Rock the Vote campaign and some of the lines are very pointed towards Bush Sr, who was running for a second term), but also questioning your sanity and driving around to uh, feel better. Relatable. It also references another song, a mechanism that I delight in — Rock Around the Clock, by Bill Haley and the Comets, if you’re wondering.
R.E.M. stand out with their use of mandolin and other not so typically utilized instruments, and it’s always really funny to me that they were so popular in top 40 music when they just, aren’t pop music at all. But that isn’t a bad thing. The bright sunny day for your average sad sack lives in The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite, where you even hear Michael Stipe laugh his way through the lyrics. It’s upbeat, it’s absurd, and it’s also fucking great. It’s fun as hell to sing. Lastly, I may be in the minority, but I love instrumental tracks (when they’re good), and New Orleans Instrumental No. 1 is two minutes and thirteen seconds of someone letting me fall asleep on them like a cat while they gently play with my hair. I could listen to it on repeat forever and I’d never be sick of it. It’s so beautiful. In my incessant need to know everything about every song, I have learned that a longer version exists (may I hear it?), and that it has never been performed live (may we hear it?).
I guess my Mom just really liked them. She grew up playing a few different stringed instruments but is deaf in one ear and can’t hold a tune to save her life. Still, once, she took me and that shitty boyfriend to our hyper local village music store (it’s long gone but was such a gem), I think so I could buy some guitar strings. The woman picked up a mandolin, and played a few chords perfectly. Our jaws hit the floor. Every time I hear the mandolin in one of their songs, I think of that moment and how cool she was to me in it.
They will always get bonus points for two additional things: Mike Mills is a consistent staple in the modern day Big Star lineup, with R.E.M. being one of the bands responsible for their later resurgence by citing their influence. Actually, I’m only just realizing this, but I HEAR IT IN ALL THAT MANDOLIN. Holy shit.
So, okay, I’ll always love them for that. But also, they are fictional character Ben Wyatt’s favorite band in the dorkiest and most pure, sincere way ever. Could a depressed person make this?
I had no idea I had this much to say about R.E.M. I’m a little embarrassed.

-He does have an incredibly emotional side underneath it all.
-He's not sexually attracted to anyone by their appearance.
-He craves platonic and familial intimacy. Occasionally, sexual intimacy.
-But he's far more interested in the emotional and the trust aspects of sex. He will totally have exclusively sexual affairs with someone if he's found he can seriously trust them enough to take off his perpetually-smiling persona. But he gets very tired of it, very quickly, because most of these people want to have sex with him on a regular basis and he finds that exhausting and sometimes even hurtful.
-If he's seriously sleeping with someone that often, it's definitely an act of self-harm, and involves him drinking over his limit.
-If he actually feels love towards someone, it's not romantic. It's the same way he would love a friend he really trusts.
Some of the songs that I feel aren't simply self-explanatory or that have lyrics I really want to point out:
Stranger (by Goldfrapp) || "Stranger, make me remember you. Taken by the crowd, a tide. It's there, then gone. Do or die." || A gentle but haunting erotic song about a no-strings-attached sexual encounter with a stranger, who is not attractive to the narrator by their appearance but by their otherworldly aura. Pretty much my overall idea of what makes Alastor enchanted by certain people.
Leather (by Tori Amos) || "Don't you want more than my sex? Oh, god, could it be the weather? Oh, god, why am I here? I almost ran over an angel. 'In a sense,' he said, 'You're alone here. So if you jump, you best jump far.'" || Honestly, because of the jazz vibes and the piano riff in the middle, I can totally imagine Alastor singing/playing this. The first line "I'm standing naked before you, don't you want more than my sex?" I think implies a figurative nakedness rather than literal. As in, the narrator has bared their soul to this person, but all the other person can think about and all they want from them is between their legs.
Boxing Day Blues (by Courtney Barnett) || "I know that I let you down. You're not keen on what you've found. I love all of your ideas, you love the idea of me. Lover, I've got no idea..."
All Cats Are Grey (by The Cure) || "I never thought that I would find myself."
Sleeps With Butterflies (by Tori Amos) || "Are you having regrets about last night? I'm not. Is there trouble ahead for you, the acrobat? This girl only sleeps with butterflies. So go on and fly, then." || Alastor being perfectly happy with his aromantic life, and even happier to say "ok! fuck off!" to anyone who doesn't respect that.
Time to Go Home (by Chastity Belt) || "There we were, sitting in silence. Nothing worthwhile to say. Wanting something that would cut deep. Oh... I can't see straight... The room is spinning... I just want to have a good time. I hope you have a strong heart." || Relying on alcohol to help him care less about how someone treats him in bed, craving both exclusively to feel something. But often, for him, the combination of being drunk + bad sex leads to him lashing out (even though he's not even a mean drunk). At best, screaming things at them like, "Don't fucking touch me! Stay away from me!", and at worst, killing them. The second lyric here, I usually interpret as someone being a mean drunk but relying on alcohol to feel something. But with Alastor, "I hope you have a strong heart" would mean he wants to sleep with someone who actually cares about his feelings.
Low Five (by Sneaker Pimps) || "Just change with no real progress, nothing comes to mind. Do you love yourself?" || Desperately craving platonic intimacy and a trustworthy bedroom experience. Alastor also feels that people who are offended by him rejecting them for sex are pitifully insecure and egocentric.
Tear in Your Hand (by Tori Amos) || "I think there are pieces of me you've never seen. Maybe I ain't used to 'maybes' smashing in a cold room, cutting my hands up every time I touch you."
Drone (by Chastity Belt) || "It was just illusion, stuck in my own bad air. I make choices without reason, invite strangers in and leave them. He was just another man trying to teach me something. I never expect much from anyone, so I'm never disappointed and I never have to trust."
Cologne Cerrone Houdini (by Goldfrapp) || "I'm not your kind, I'm not your girl. See, I'm in your car but not your life."
Thea (by Goldfrapp) || "It's a long, long night of waiting. I want you there, I want you gone." || Sometimes when he was alive, Alastor would start crying in the middle of sex, deciding he wanted to stop, and pushing the other person away from him. Because it just didn't feel right. Something was missing.
Dream On (by Depeche Mode) || "Can you feel a little love? What you take won't kill you, but careful what you're giving. Feel the fever coming, you're shaking and twitching. You can scratch all over, but that won't stop you itching." || Can't a potential friend feel at least a little platonic love? The last line suggests a struggle to be satisfied. There have been plenty of times when Alastor has had sex with someone but felt empty or annoyed because the other person just didn't care to make it mutually satisfying or to make sure Alastor could actually trust them.
Laurel (by Goldfrapp) || "Looking for lights, a golden light. Red, red hair and almond eyes. Strange how he's cold behind the smile. An angry mind, don't wait for tonight. Fear is a fog, rolling in and around. Whispers from inside, running out of time." || Alastor just wants friends or a found-family. He just wants to be close with people whom he really trusts (i.e. Rosie). But because of his early life experiences when he was alive, he finds it difficult and even heartbreaking to try to trust anyone. But he has an emotional, sentimental side to him that's desperate to be shared.
All Men Are Pigs (by Studio Killers) || "I believe that life's a film noir. I know the role that you play, so save your cliches. I wasn't born yesterday. Zip it up, Romeos."
"I'm the boy that will heal you, fix you up!" || This song tells the story of a conversation between two people: a person minding her own business and not interested in a sexual encounter, and a belligerent man trying to convince her that he's "not like other guys."
Swamp Song (by TOOL) || "You're a stupid, belligerent fucker. No one even invited you."
Caught a Lite Sneeze (by Tori Amos) || "Boys on my left side, boys on my right side, boys in the middle. Building tumbling down, didn't know our love was so small." || Alastor considers men or any adults who can't keep it in their pants as childish. Acting like boys, not men.
Strict Machine (by Goldfrapp) || He's turned on not by the way someone looks or by romantic feelings, but by the way they touch him, their body language, their tone of voice, and by his own ability to trust them.
My Hands (by Chaos Chaos) || "When you talk to me, there's something in the way. It's when you look at me, so I look far away. I know your kind, you're thinking about it. You think you own everybody. But I do give up, and I do dance with you."
Mama (by Unloved) || "Mama, I did something bad. Mama, I made a mistake. Unlocked my heart, m'aider, m'aider... I let him in, everything went dark. Make it stop, make it go away. I hear your voice inside my head, over and over and over again, 'If you play with fire, you're gonna get burned.'" || His mother was the very first person to be open-minded and to accept him unconditionally, encouraging him to always be himself. It wasn't until after she died that he started putting on a fake persona to protect himself. Because he had no one to confide in, and he doesn't know who he is without her. And that's where his confusing desires for intimacy started and his struggles to understand/accept his own identity. He wouldn't feel the need to subject himself to anything he didn't want if he just had his mother to hug and to talk to. But, she's most likely in Heaven, meaning he will most likely never see her again and never receive her much-needed advice.

16. At what point in the process do you come up with titles?
Almost always at the very ending, moments before opening AO3 to post, usually in agony and defeat. "Fuck it I'll just use a Cold War Kids lyric" is rly the unfortunate vibe I bring to many fics...I am so bad at titles. I am SO BAD at titles. I think the only good title I have ever used from a song or poem is "the overture lightly sounding" bc it's the horniest part of Leaves of Grass for a very horny fic about gay men pretending to be more dignified than they are.
17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?
I said this about NHLers but it's also true of baseball players: Why do I have their heights memorized. Like what am I possibly going to use the knowledge that Blake Sabol is listed at 6'4 for. I used that for one fic and now it's just in my head for ever. Blake Sabol: enormous fucking human being.
Also this is a total downer, but one time for a fic I was researching Canada's involvement in WWII and ended up learning all about the Aleutian Islands campaign and for some reason it's always stuck in my head that the Allies (Canada and the USA in this case) had hundreds of casualties on Kiska Island despite there being no actual fighting. Like they lost people and people got heinously injured due to booby traps, friendly fire, mines--and frostbite, and disease. But there was no actual fighting on Kiska Island, the Japanese invaders had already left the island. People just had their lives completely altered if not ended because it was mismanaged and because it was cold!! Thinking about the Pacific theatre in WWII makes me so crazy for so many reasons both personal and political.
18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic?
I don't know if this is my favorite but literally every time I'm on caltrain and it's crowded I end up thinking of this line:
“Take it from a gay ferroequinologist,” I said. “When your night starts like this on a train, you’ll never forget it.”
I'm just getting on AO3 and saying anything I want and no one has ever told me to reconsider my actions.

B-52's - s/t
Is there anything more sincere, unfettered by societal norms, and relentlessly fun that the B-52's debut album? So much of the lyricism is extremely esoteric, almost certainly in jokes between the band members. The album makes no effort to explain and it's better to just lose yourself in the nonsense. Like what the fuck is Planet Claire about? Who cares? There's a moon in the sky and it's called the moon! Analyze that! Fred Schneider and Kate Pierson have the most iconic vocals of all time. Pierson has like a million octave range and Schneider's uh wikipedia calls it sprechgesang which is very funny to me, but his delivery is so beloved that I don't think anyone can resist giving it a go from time to time. The album is a manic daze the music bounces around stuck between hyper modern (for the time) new wave and deeply anachronistic 50s and 60s throwbacks like the surf rock on the monster hit Rock Lobster. Unfettered, unhinged, this album is pure and perfect camp.

The Beatles - Meet The Beatles
Why on earth would you choose the US version instead of the obviously superior UK release? Listen I'll compromise by listening to the three songs from Meet that aren't on With but then I'm just going to listen to With The Beatles because fuck you I like their covers. Their version of Please Mister Postman is great and so is their Money (That's What I Want). With The Beatles is basically just a slightly more polished and more consistent take on the sound of their first album. I think they fell off a bit with A Hard Days Night too so the inclusion of more covers and more rock and roll style shit is exactly what I want. Basically fuck the haters early Beatles is camp I like it.

Robyn - Body Talk
A lot of people really vibe with this kind of glossy candy-coated pop but all I hear is a lot of thumping with little meaningful artistic direction. The least interesting parts of Ke$ha and Lady Gaga distilled into a slurry of commercially viable pop music whose sole redeeming feature is a handful of good beats.

Leonard Cohen - Songs Of Leonard Cohen
Already an established poet by the time he decided to pick up the guitar it could be argued that Leonard Cohen was a little too literate to be a successful musician. His debut definitely gives that impression, although his evocative language and simple but effective guitar work definitely won over listeners in the end. Suzanne, the first track from his first album was his largest hit until hallelujah in the 80s and I think that's largely because it has a melody that you can hum. To me the best of it is when Cohen is allowed to just sing and play guitar with little to no embellishment. The lyricism is the main draw after all. The songs of isolation, of lovers having to say goodbye, of people lost in a large world. Cohen is a masterful songwriter but certainly a perpetual downer and might scan as pretentious to some. This is one of those albums that fantastic within it's niche but might not be for everyone.

Michael Jackson - Bad
Man I know Thriller is gonna be like super high on this list but Bad is absolutely my favorite Michael Jackson record. It's just banger after banger. The hits alone are bonkers Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man In The Mirror, Smooth Criminal. But oh man the deep cuts are great too, in fact Speed Demon might be my favorite just for that goofy little synth bass run. The album is just bubblier and sillier than his previous work. It's extremely 80s with synths everywhere never trying to hide from what it is. There is simply no way to avoided bopping along to the whole album, it's just so goddamn enjoyable.

Okay, so before anyone comes for me and my UOs, this is my list for my top 5...and here's my bottom five, basically in track listing order, plus [gestures vaguely] the reasons:
Bigger Than Me = Not for me, too boring in its attempt to be soaring, too late-era Oasis in the worst way, it sounds like the way that it's meant to sound, i.e., like a robot wrote it to tick off three specific boxes (2//10)
Face the Music = Not quite AMs, not quite Oasis, still not quite him because it's too flat/boring in the chorus, the vibes are post-Oasis cover band, and not the really good one (2//10)
Common People = Just way too fucking SLOWWWWWWW, and it could have echoed Pulp's banger of the same name (or, hello, Mis-Shapes), but it doesn't, it has none of the emotional punch in the lyrics that you'd get from AMs, it's even too bland for late-era Oasis, plus it feels low-key insulting in the lyrics with that "if you act like us you're one of us," etc., missed potential city (2//10)
Angels Fly = The treacle!! Plus, it's a low-key downer after another low-key downer, and I keep thinking, how is this gonna work with a crowd if that's what he says was the point of writing the whole album? I don't feel a connection in the lyrics or the music, I could hear an American country artist do this, and that's a real dig (2//10)
Holding on to Heartache = OKAY, so this one shows a lot more Louis potential, the lyrics are on POINT, the music is almost there, but again, it's TOO FUCKING SLOW, especially after three or four slow dirges in a row, maybe when it's live it could be punched up? But more's the pity if it's not…the bridge helps, but it comes in too late (4//10)

narcissist cookbook is by far one of my favorite artists. like his songs just HIT for me and the lyrics help me process things i didn’t even realize i was feeling — and then there’s the absolute state of union which helped radicalize me.
i first discovered him through “Apple”
and this song, god. it is such a good introduction to him, in my opinion. i’m no religious person by any means, but something with this song resonated with me so much — like

like, god. i sometimes have particularly downer thoughts on life, but these lyrics throw it into perspective that — ultimately, in the grand scheme of things, human life is pretty damn short, but, despite that, we keep going. and our short lives, as morbid as it sounds, are what define the human experience. death is obviously still a horrific thing, and something i fear personally, but besides life itself, it’s at the core of our experience. generations upon generations have different minds and beliefs converge to build and create beautiful things, and one person’s great discovery or invention is often the result of a lot of work from their predecessors and peers. because, death is our finish line, and it’s what motivates us to work — to work and innovate and thrive to be able to give those same gifts to the generations after us so they can do the same.

SEASONAL_SONG_DISORDER: Seven Christmases ago we sadly lost George Michael… lending a whole new meaning/feeling behind WHAMS!’ iconic Xmas ode. Released in 1984, “LAST CHRISTMAS” spent five straight weeks at NUMBER 2 (the fuck) behind the atrociously cornballed “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” albatross… but don’t worry friends, this banger eventually hit #1 decades later. Whams!’ “Last Christmas” is seen by yours truly as thee greatest Xmas jam of all time & one whose sound is (still) very much en-vogue with pop producers today. I mean, how can you not love this song! Those synths, the vocals, those processed drums, the melody, those downer ass lyrics & the overall aesthetic that manages to hit all the canned marks for this lover of dated 80′s production. Our beloved Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou (who not only wrote but also produced this certified gem) pours his merry & sadly closeted heart out in this track of snowy betrayal & endless infatuation. The themes of “Last Christmas” are universally pop in nature, dealing with heartbreak & longing, yet are framed in a dark as fuck Xmas-centric narrative. And don’t get me started on the envy inducing video treatment which is a true gem & only ups the song’s already fantastic aura & can be summed up by one amazing screen shot (see above) Merry Xmas y’all.
