obviously, he wants her to be happy and find love, but in his head, she is a BABY. like, no, she is not 14 years old. She was born yesterday, actually.

Annie tells you about it first. I think she wants your help her break it to her dad because she knows he will have... mixed feelings. so you sit down together to tell him, and it's just... silence for a good few seconds.

"Huh? no, no. say it again, think I misheard you, sweetheart. "

"I said I have a boyfriend"

"Oh. okay, definitely heard you right then"

but being the good dad he is, he puts on a brave face for her, "That's great peanut! what's his name? how long have you been together?"

Annie gets all shy and blushy when she explains, she doesn't give his name, but she does tell him they've been together for a month now. matty nearly does a spit take at how long he's been unaware, but holds it in and just coughs awkwardly instead.

"I'm so happy for you baby, just make sure he treats you good, yeah?"

Annie nods and assures her dad she won't let him be a dick to her (matty would normally scold her for swearing but he can't muster the energy right now), and she runs off giggling upstairs because the boy in question has just rung her.

and he is genuinely happy for her, but that doesn't mean it doesn't make him feel ancient, "dating. she's dating. oh god, I think I'm officially old. i have a DAUGHTER who is DATING???"

you comfort him and laugh lightly at his reaction, which only makes him groan and bury his face in your neck. "m'sorry baby, your reaction was just too funny. from what she's told me, he seems lovely. even writers her notes in class"

matty then shoots back and eyes you suspiciously, "Wait. you already knew? she told you before me?" his voice is squeaky as he processes the betrayal.

"Sweetheart, you can't blame her! girls always tell their mums these kind of things first. she just wanted my help to tell you anyway." That soothes matty a bit. The fact that Annie wanted to share this part of her life with him at all was something he valued massively.

"Wait. she said he sends her notes. Did she show you any?" You nod, and matty immediately starts grilling you for information.

"I can't tell you anything, Matthew, girl code!" Of course he pouts and tries to get you to crumble by pressing kisses up your neck. but you stay firm (mostly) and don't tell him ANYTHING.

now, who is Annie dating? I like to think it's someone with a connection to the boys, not baby hann - those two are more like cousins. and in this universe, George and Ross aren't parents yet. so maybe a nephew from one of them?

I think her and George's nephew could be VERY interesting... especially when those two find out about the romance lmaooooo

As you entered the detective's office-themed escape room, the challenge ahead was daunting. The room was dimly lit, with an air of mystery hanging about. You both glanced at the various objects and documents scattered across the room, each potentially holding a clue.

Jeongin, ever the optimist, began to explore a vintage filing cabinet. "Hey, look at this!" he exclaimed, pulling out a dusty file. "I wonder if there's something important in here."

You couldn't resist playing along. "Maybe it's a secret agent's top-secret mission report," you mused, your eyes wide with curiosity. "Or perhaps just an old pizza delivery receipt."

He laughed, and you both started sorting through the papers, looking for any hidden hints or codes. However, a few moments later, you found yourselves engrossed in a small argument about which document was the most significant clue.

Jeongin insisted that a weathered photograph must hold the key, while you were certain it was the torn piece of paper with a cryptic message. Your disagreement sparked a playful argument, each of you trying to convince the other of your choice.

"Okay, fine," Jeongin finally conceded with a grin, "Let's try your idea first."

With the challenge of the room slowly unraveling, you continued to explore the intricacies of the detective's office. You deciphered hidden messages, pieced together puzzles, and unlocked hidden compartments. Along the way, the playful banter persisted, occasionally turning into laughter as you worked together to solve the various riddles.

As the final minutes of the escape room ticked away, you found the last piece of the puzzle, unlocking the door to freedom. The sense of accomplishment was palpable, and you both couldn't help but share a triumphant high-five.

you didn't want the date to end just yet. So, with a hopeful smile, you turned to Jeongin and asked, "Do you think we should continue our date? How about some ice cream?"

He grinned, clearly enjoying your company. "Ice cream sounds perfect!" he replied.

With that, you set off on the next part of your date, hand in hand, looking forward to enjoying sweet treats and extending the memorable day you had shared, as you walked to the nearby ice cream parlor.

Armin's friends are piled up on the couch. Some are even seated on the floor because of the lack of available seats, but they don’t seem to mind. They sit in the dark, attentive as if they’re waiting for a movie to start when in reality they’re awaiting Armin’s upcoming presentation. The nervous marine biology student fidgets nervously in front of them, adjusting his sweater vest and tugging at the sleeves of his button up. In one hand he holds a clicker for his upcoming presentation. 

One of Armin’s friends, Reiner Braun, raises his hand. “Can I ask that we skip over the reproduction cycle of whatever rare aquatic animal you’re going to be covering today?” he asks. “Because I think all these fish are cool and all, but hearing about how they reproduce really makes them seem so much less majestic afterward and I would like to cling onto whatever little wonder I have left for the world.”  

“Weren’t you the one who said you would fuck a mermaid or a fishman?” Ymir asks. She’s sitting on a stool beside the couch, one arm thrown casually over Historia’s shoulder. 

“That’s different,” Reiner says dismissively. 

Armin clears his throat. “So, two things. First thing: this isn’t about fish or any kind of marine life. Second thing: If I were to give a seminar about marine life, I couldn’t possibly leave out reproductive cycles as they’re essential to any organism’s life cycle.”  

“I guess that’s fair,” Reiner sighs.  

“We are gathered here today to discuss a very important issue,” Armin continues before hitting the button on his clicker so that the slides appear on the blank wall behind him. The title slides have falling snowflakes and the words Planning the Perfect First Date in Times New Roman. “I am requesting your input on how to plan my perfect first date with a Miss Annie Leonhardt.”  

The group of friends let out a chorus of oohs and Connie remarks, “Oh, I was wondering why she wasn’t here.”  

“Not me,” Mikasa says. “I just assumed that you intentionally left her out.”  

Mikasa and Annie’s rivalry is a strange one. The two are very similar: intelligent, of few words, and intensely loyal to their friends. Maybe it’s because they’re so similar that they clash so often. If Armin were to pick an incident that instigated the unspoken rivalry between the two girls, he would probably have to cite that time in the freshman year when Eren had given Annie a passing compliment in the gym. The funny thing is, Eren had forgotten what he had said as soon as it left his lips and Annie didn’t care enough to pay attention to him. It’s a bit unclear why Eren complimenting Annie had soured Mikasa’s opinion of the icy blonde so much, but the memory of it had left a lasting bad impression. The two had never been on good terms to begin with, and that incident had permanently doomed any goodwill between them.  

“Why can’t you just ask Annie out normally?” Eren asks, belatedly throwing up his hand. He only ever participates in lectures if Armin’s giving them out in front of friends, much to his professors’ exasperation. Otherwise, Eren’s brain goes on autopilot. The only reason he’s getting passing grades in his courses is because Armin keeps dragging him to study sessions in the library every other day.  

“That is an excellent question, Eren, but I would appreciate it if you guys would save any questions you might have for the end of my presentation,” Armin says, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose with one hand. “You may find that the answers will be presented in my slides, and anything that isn’t covered can be explored in the Q&A session at the end.”  

“I’m confused,” Marco says. “I thought you and Annie were already dating.”  

“You are one of the only person who can tolerate her for extended periods of time,” Mikasa points out, which isn’t … untrue. If there is one thing that differs between Mikasa and Annie, it’s that Mikasa is much more sociable than Annie, who prefers her social circles to only consist of two or three people at most.  

“I thought you two were dating, and I’m pretty much Annie’s best friend,” Mina adds.  

“I know that being best friends with Annie is impressive, but you do know that you’re only competing with Armin for that spot, right?” Reiner asks. Unlike Mikasa, Reiner is on good terms on Annie or at the very least Reiner doesn’t seem to butt heads with Annie as much as Mikasa does.  

“No, we’re just … it’s not official anyway and I wanted to ask her on the perfect holiday date to cement our status as an actual couple,” Armin says. He’s desperate to turn the attention back to his presentation, but it’s difficult with a large group of people with short attention spans.  

“Holi-date!” Connie and Sasha shout in unison before bursting out into laughter.  

“Look, Annie is special to me and I want to show her that I think she’s special in return,” Armin says. He clicks through a bunch of his introductory slides. They might never make it to the end at this rate, so he should just skip to the most important slides. 

Armin skips straight to the slides with a list of Christmas-themed date ideas and stands nervously at the side, his hand bouncing nervously against his thigh. He shifts from side to side and waits for his friends to read the slides.  

“These are just a few examples of what I was thinking,” Armin says after an appropriate amount of time has passed. He fiddles with the clicker in his hands and looks down at the floor in front of him instead of his audience. His oral presentation skills have improved since entering university, but they’ve completely evaporated now and he can only stare at the floor and stammer like a new university student introducing himself at orientation and struggling to think of a fun fact.  

“That’s more than a few. That’s an extensive list. I bet if you printed it out, it’d be a foot or two in length,” Jean says, and Armin winces.  

“I suppose I was a little enthusiastic about putting this list together,” Armin mumbles. He looks desperately at his friends. “Can you please help me decide what I should do with Annie on our first date? Deciding is one thing, but I also have to prepare for it to make sure everything is absolutely perfect.”  

“Armin, it’s a really long list,” Historia says.  

The slide is filled from top to bottom with text in 8 point font. Armin’s friends have to squint to read the activities listed, and Armin curses himself for not printing out a copy of the slides for everyone like he had initially planned. No wonder this is going horribly. 

“How about we all vote for the ones we like and whichever one is the most popular is the one Armin goes with?” Mina suggests.  

It’s not the method that Armin would have went with. He would have preferred that people picked the date activity they thought would be the best and have everyone defend their choice in a structured debate, but Mina’s suggestion would probably save a lot more time and frustration.  

“Does everyone have pens and paper?” Armin asks, although he thinks he already knows the answer. He and his friends may be university students, but they’re also horribly underprepared when it comes to the spontaneous need for writing tools. He sighs and passes out pens and paper to all his friends.  

“In our defense, you told us we didn’t have to bring anything,” Sasha points out, and she’s not wrong. Armin just didn’t expect nearly everyone to come completely empty-handed.  

“Sasha and I brought popcorn,” Connie says, holding out a bowl of popcorn that he and Sasha had prepared in the kitchen before the presentation started. He offers some to Armin, who shakes his head, and Connie moves on to offer it to the rest of their friends.  

After everyone is done writing down their choices on their papers, Armin reads them all and tallies them up. Somehow, he ends up with even more choices for holiday dates than he had started with, but he probably should have expected it. It would have been too easy if things ran smoothly.

Armin waits outside of Annie’s apartment complex, shivering in the cold. The outfit Historia had chosen for him is better than any outfit he’s ever put together himself, but it’s not as warm as the puffy winter coats he typically wears. He huffs on his gloved hands and his hot breath against his freezing hands gives him a little bit of warmth.  

Armin had allowed Historia to pick his ensemble today because Jean and Historia had been fighting over what Armin should wear to his first date with Annie. Jean argued that he should be able to pick the outfit as a fashion design major. Historia made the argument that she was consistently the best dressed person in their friend group to which Jean scoffed and said if everyone had as much money as Historia then everyone would be dressed just as nicely. To prevent the squabbling between his friends from growing into a full-blown argument, Armin had quickly suggested that Historia choose his outfit for when he asked out Annie and Jean pick his outfit for the date, and his two friends grudgingly agreed. So far, Armin has found that Historia has great style but doesn’t think very much about the practicality of the outfits she puts together.  

“If you were going to wait outside in the cold, you should have worn a thicker coat,” Annie says, her sudden appearance making Armin jump. She raises an eyebrow as she takes in Armin’s wardrobe. “You look … nice.”  

“Th-thanks,” Armin manages to respond. He’s not sure if he’s stammering because of his nerves or because of the cold. “I probably should have asked to meet in a café or somewhere warmer.”  

“Oh, that’s fine. I don’t really mind the cold,” Annie says. She’s dressed in a knitted sweater and jeans, but she doesn’t seem to be shivering at all. “Did you want to go somewhere?”  

“Ye-es,” Armin says, his voice breaking in the middle, and he coughs to clear his throat. “Actually, first I wanted to ask you out.”  

“Ask me out?” Annie repeats. She purses her lips, head tilted slightly.  

“Well, yes. Because, you know, I like you. A lot. And I want to go out with you,” Armin says. He had told himself he wouldn’t get nervous. After all, he and Annie spend so much time together that they’re practically dating already. Asking her out on an official date shouldn’t be that different, and yet he finds himself speeding through his words as if to get through his embarrassment as quickly as possible. “So I came up with a list of activities we could do together.”  

Annie takes the list of holiday date ideas that Armin had printed out. It’s printed on two sheets of paper, front to back, and in 8 point font with half-inch margins. She has to bring the list closer to her face to read it. It’s impossible to tell what she’s thinking as her blue eyes scan the first page.  

“They’re just … silly Christmas-themed date ideas, but I think it’d be fun if we could do one together,” Armin hears himself ramble. He doesn’t know if it would be better to just shut up or keep talking, but he decides that he’d rather avoid an awkward silence so he continues to talk. “I had a list and I had my friends vote on them. I thought they would all converge on one particular idea or maybe gravitate towards the same ones, but everyone had a different favorite. And then some people thought it would be a great idea to suggest even more date activities, and I couldn’t just ibgnore them after they’d been suggested -”  

“Just one?” Annie asks, looking up from the paper.  

Armin blinks. “What?”  

“I can only pick one?” Annie asks. She tucks a lock of hair behind her ear. “Why don’t we just do all of them?”  

“All of them?” Armin isn’t sure he’s heard correctly. “You … would you want to do all of them?” 

Annie shrugs and glances down at the list again, flipping a page and then turning it to the back. “Well, I normally wouldn’t do a lot of these, but if it’s with you … I think it could be fun.” 

Armin can feel his heart begin to flutter in his chest. “I … yeah, we could do all of it. I’d … I’d really love that.”  

Annie smiles and raises a hand out for Armin to take. “Well, we’d better get started if we want to finish these anytime soon. You have a lot.”  

Armin sees Annie’s hand extended towards him and he takes a moment to marvel at the sight of it before bounding over happily and taking his girlfriend’s hand, excited to begin checking off their Christmas date list together.

“Are you excited, darling?” Jenny asks as Matilda looks out the train window on their way to the city. Matilda smiles before she even turns to see her, but she looks her way with an eager nod. Jenny smiles back. “What are you wanting to do most?”

“Bookstore,” Matilda answers before Jenny even finishes her sentence. Jenny chuckles.

“I am too.”

They continue chatting about what they’re most looking forward to during their weekend in the big city before they return home. Neither of them have any desire to live any closer to the metropolitan area, but an occasional visit is fun.

Eventually, the polite but hard to understand voice announces their stop and they hop off the train with their bags. Jenny flags down a cab to take them to their hotel to drop their things off before they go exploring.

She didn’t splurge that much.

Or so she tells herself when she sees the massive building the cab pulls out in front of, with a green awning overhanging the entrance which is literally made of gold. Matilda looks around like she’s just walked into another universe, and Jenny can’t quite contain a similar reaction. Neither of them ever quite anticipated setting foot in a place like this.

A bell boy comes rushing up when called by the doorman to take their bags to their room. He loads them onto a cart and goes strutting off ahead of them while Jenny and Matilda step into the lobby in awe.

“Holy shit,” Matilda whispers to herself. Jenny gives her a gentle whack on the back of the head, but truth be told, she had the same words running through her head. “We’re staying here?”

“Two nights,” Jenny confirms. Matilda looks around. Red ribbons hang above the elevators, a large garland dangles from the huge, marble front desk. Fancy looking people in fancy looking coats mill about, chatting amongst themselves or sitting on the plush green sofas with magazines or newspapers. Wreaths hang from every support post, and an absolutely massive Christmas tree nearly touching the ceiling towers over all in the center of the room.

“Whoa.”

“Whoa indeed,” Jenny chuckles. Matilda frowns suddenly. “What’s the matter?”

“How much did this trip cost?” Matilda asks softly, looking up at her with worried eyes.

“No amount you need to concern yourself with. It took some careful budgeting, but this is something we can afford occasionally. Very occasionally.”

Matilda still looks worried, but she trusts Jenny. Eventually her little brow unfurrows and some of the tension leaves her shoulders. She squeezes Jenny’s hand gently, and Jenny squeezes back.

“Let’s hurry or we’ll miss our show!” Jenny reminds her. Matilda brightens, any hint of worry totally gone. She rushes back towards the door, lugging Jenny behind her.

Another cab takes them to the theatre, and they have a similar reaction to the lobby there. They get their programs and go find their seats. Matilda reads through each of the actors’ and crews’ biographies carefully as she waits for the show to begin, munching casually on her sweets Jenny bought at concessions. Jenny smiles as she sees her legs kicking just a little, her little button-up boots not even brushing the floor.

Eventually the curtain opens and the overture begins, so Matilda puts down her playbill and focuses in on the actors on stage. Jenny was a little worried, given their history, about how Matilda would react to Annie. But she still remembers the day as a little girl her father took her to see the same show and how much she adored it. Of course, that was before anything. But Matilda smiles at the orphans interacting and looks perfectly pensive during Maybe.

Jenny finds herself watching her daughter more than the children on stage. If you’ve seen it once, you’ve seen it a thousand times, she tells herself. She gets the important bits. Matilda giggling at Annie stealing away in the laundry, her scowl at Miss Hannigan trying to lie her way out of yet another potential scandal, Matilda’s wide eyes as the young actress practically belts the roof off the theatre during Tomorrow.

“Is it over?” Matilda asks sadly when the lights come back on and the curtains draw shut again.

“No, darling, it’s just intermission,” Jenny chuckles reassuringly. “It gives the cast and crew time for any bigger set and costume changes, and to take a little break before they keep going.”

“Oh,” Matilda replies. “I was going to say, that would’ve made a very unsatisfying ending.”

“Indeed it would’ve,” Jenny chortles.

As it turns out, she had no reason to be worried. Matilda watches with a near-concerningly vengeful smile, on the edge of her seat, as the villains get their comeuppance and Annie gets to live happily ever after with Grace and Mr. Warbucks. She holds her playbill tightly to her chest and follows Jenny sadly out of the theatre when the curtain call ends and the lights come up for the last time.

“Did you enjoy it?” Jenny asks, bracing a bit against the cool winter air blustering against them as they set back off down the sidewalk. Matilda nods pensively. “You’re awfully quiet.”

Matilda looks up at her briefly, and then back ahead of herself. “I don’t understand it.”

“Understand what?” Jenny replies.

“Why she didn’t run away earlier,” Matilda says quietly.

“Well, she had all the other orphans to take care of. If she was gone, who would’ve taken care of Molly?”

“But she is gone by the end. She got placed with Mr. Warbucks. She had to leave the other orphans all by themselves before the president saved them.”

“That’s… true,” Jenny replies. “Well, you saw what happened when she tried to live on the street. It was a very difficult era in history for a lot of people, and she lived in a very dangerous area.”

“…Is it terrible I wish I had been an orphan sometimes?” Matilda asks softly.

Jenny is quiet for a moment, listening to their boots clacking along the pavement together, one set quieter and more rapid. “No, I don’t think so.”

“Really?” Matilda asks. She frowns. “But you are an orphan.”

“I am,” Jenny agrees. “I think everyone in an… unfortunate situation, wishes things were different for themselves and their loved ones, even if to other people it might seem grim or like it would be worse.”

“Did you ever try to run away like Annie?”

“Heavens, no, I wasn’t brave enough for that,” Jenny replies immediately with an almost-shocked laugh.

“But maybe you would’ve found your Mr. Warbucks,” Matilda says sadly.

“I did,” Jenny replies. “It just took a while.”

“You did? Is that how we can afford the hotel?”

“No, Matilda, I’m talking about you,” Jenny laughs.

“Me?”

“Do you remember what I told you on your birthday?” Jenny asks. Matilda nods. Jenny should’ve known. She’s starting to think Matilda has a photographic memory.

“You’re rich because of me, even if it isn’t with money,” she responds. “Even though we do have money, too.”

Jenny laughs again. “Exactly. Being a millionaire might be nice, especially back then, but I have my own someone who turns my skies to blue, and has me wrapped around her little finger.”

Matilda smiles up at her and sings a little bit of the chorus to I Don’t Need Anything But You. Jenny smiles.

“You have a beautiful voice. You’d play a good Annie,” she says.

“You’d be a good Grace,” Matilda replies.

“Really?” Jenny asks in shock. Matilda nods confidently.

They continue walking in silence for a while. Eventually Matilda quietly pipes up, “I’m glad you’re not a millionaire.”

“Really?” Jenny asks. “Why?”

“I don’t think you’d be as nice if you were bald.”

Jenny laughs so hard they nearly have to stop walking so she can catch her breath. Matilda looks confused, but she doesn’t say anything else. Eventually, they come to their destination. Jenny wouldn’t admit it, but it might have been the sole reason they chose to come to the city instead of taking their mummy-daughter weekend somewhere else.

“Oh my goodness,” Matilda whispers as they step into the huge bookstore.

“Oh my goodness,” Jenny echoes. The worn wood shelves seem to stretch for miles, nearly floor to ceiling, winding like a most fantastical maze throughout the large building. A huge Christmas tree made of books sits in the middle, rings and rings of volumes winding around themselves up and up and up with a staircase spiraling around the outside so people can climb up and peruse. There’s even little benches scattered nearby on the ground for folks to just sit and read.

Matilda takes off ever so carefully towards it, rushing up the stairs to the tippy top of the tree as fast as she can. Jenny follows her, much slower, and with many more pauses for breath. Matilda stands on her tiptoes to see which book gets the honor of being on the highest point. “A Christmas Carol,” Matilda says with a giggle.

“Fitting.”

“It is a very good book,” Matilda says.

“It is. One of my favorites,” Jenny agrees.

“Mine too,” Matilda says with a smile. She gently brushes her fingertips over the cover before she shrugs and starts rushing back down the spiral staircase. Jenny sighs and lingers for a moment to rest her head in her arms on the railing in exasperation before she follows her, huffing and puffing all the way once again.

She’s pleasantly surprised to find Matilda waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs instead of having rushed off to peruse the aisles upon aisles upon aisles of wonderful tomes they’re surrounded by. Jenny wouldn’t have blamed her, but it is nice not having to chase her sprightly six-year-old through a maze of bookshelves.

Matilda actually takes her time with this bit. She takes Jenny’s hand and leads her to the aisles that catch her eye, slowly meandering up and down, eyes scanning the titles and the covers. Occasionally she pauses when she sees one she recognizes or she’s read before, and runs her finger over the spines.

“Oh, I’ve been wanting to read this for ages,” she says eventually when they get to the Dickens section. They both have a particular weakness for a good Dickens novel. She looks up at Jenny. “Can I get it? Please?”

“Of course, love. Get whatever you want,” Jenny says with a smile.

Matilda’s eyes brighten and she suddenly starts rushing about like a woman possessed, grabbing book upon book until Jenny can barely see her beneath the tower of novels in her arms. How does she have the strength for that?

“Just remember we have to be able to get them all back to the hotel,” Jenny reminds her. “And back home on the train.”

“We could send some home in the post?” a little voice suggests about three-fourths of the way up the walking stack of books. Jenny grabs the top few until Matilda can see and gives her a warning look. “Fiiiiine.”

With Jenny’s help she manages to pare the books back until she only has about ten. Some stay, some get replaced with others, but the first one, The Signal-Man, is the one definite keep the entire time.

Matilda proudly carries her stack of thick, heavy books up to the check-out counter and deposits them on the desk with a heavy thud. The cashier slides the stack to the side and almost jumps in surprise when she sees Matilda there. They glance between the small child and the large books a few times before they start scanning the barcode on the back.

“How old are you?” they ask Matilda curiously.

“Six,” Matilda replies, lisping a little bit around her missing front teeth. She scowls. She believes Jenny when she says she’s adorable with or without teeth, but she misses being able to properly speak.

The cashier’s eyes widen and they look to Jenny, who simply shrugs, but smiles proudly too. “Her brain’s about twenty years ahead of the rest of her. She’s read more than me.”

“Right on,” the cashier says. “What’s your favorite?”

“Oh, Dostoyevsky is fascinating,” Matilda says immediately. “But learning the Russian was tricky. Dickens is a classic, and lately I’ve been quite into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Oh, and everyone loves Agatha Christie.”

The cashier simply blinks at her. Matilda smiles and rests her chin on her folded hands on the counter.

“I like Shakespeare, myself. My roommate put me onto Hamlet last week, I’ve scarcely been able to put it down.”

“Oh, Hamlet is wonderful,” Matilda agrees as she watches her books get carefully put into a paper bag. “I read Romeo and Juliet a few years ago and it was fascinating, but it seems such a cliche now. And Mummy won’t let me read any more until I’m older.”

“…You’re six, you said?”

“Mmhmm,” Matilda hums with a nod. “Well, nearly six and a half.”

The cashier nods with raised eyebrows. “Right. Well, here’s your books. Hope you enjoy them.”

“I will,” Matilda promises in complete sincerity.

“You’ll have to come back and tell me what you think of them sometime, eh?”

“Oh, I’m sure we’ll be back,” Jenny says, the first she’s spoken in a while, as she had been watching their entire interaction with an amused smile.

“You’re welcome any time. You lot have a Happy Christmas,” the cashier says.

“You too,” Jenny replies.

“Thank you!” Matilda echoes as she takes the heavy bag off the counter and starts waddling out of the store.

Jenny follows and hears the cashier mutter, “Six. Blimey.” under their breath. She smiles proudly and follows her daughter back out into the cold December evening.

Another cab takes them back to the hotel, and they get to see their room for the first time. Their bags await them at the foot of their beds, and Matilda gives each a thorough round of jumps to test that they’re up to snuff.

“Alright, little monkey, that’s enough,” Jenny says after about the twentieth bounce. She’s starting to get dizzy watching her go up and down and up and down and- “Before you fall off and bump your head. Come get ready for your bath.”

“Okay,” Matilda says, jumping down and heading over to her. Jenny tenderly undoes the red ribbon tying part of her hair back and slips it out, folding it neatly and leaving it on the dresser for another day. Matilda roots through her suitcase for her hairbrush, and Jenny carefully detangles her hair before sending her off to wash up. She unpacks in the meantime, putting toiletries on the dresser and their clothes in the drawers.

Matilda comes back in a thick, plush robe that drags on the ground. Jenny laughs when she sees just how much of the fabric hits the floor. “There’d better be another robe in there, missy.”

“There is. Do we really have to go back home?” Matilda asks, flopping onto her bed and only tipping her head up to look at Jenny.

“Unfortunately, yes,” Jenny chuckles as she prepares herself to go get cleaned up herself. “But I’m sure we’ll be back sometime soon.”

“Lavender would love it here,” Matilda says.

“I’m sure she would,” Jenny says. Part of her is already internally screaming at the mere idea of trying to wrangle the hyper girl in a nice hotel like this, especially since Lavender has a remarkable ability to enact the same tendencies in Matilda. Regardless, Matilda is right, and they are best friends. It’s only natural for children to act like children. “Maybe we’ll show her someday.”

Matilda smiles and flops back onto the cushy bed. Jenny goes and showers, and returns to a child already dried off and in her pajamas, her wet hair brushed out and waiting to be styled. Jenny does her own and braids Matilda’s down her back.

“I’m hungry,” Matilda says softly as she ties the elastic band onto the end of the braid.

“I am too,” Jenny hums pensively. The last real meal they had was tea on the train, and neither of them have eaten anything at all since the sweets at the theater. “Shall we see about room service?”

“What’s that?”

“It’s where you call down an order to the kitchens and they make food and bring it to your room for you. Serve you in your room,” Jenny says.

“We can have dinner in our pajamas?” Matilda asks eagerly. They usually eat dinner before showering at home, so they still have their clothes from the day on. Jenny chuckles at her eagerness to do something so mundane.

“We sure can. What would you like?” she says, grabbing a menu off the nightstand and handing it to her.

Matilda decides on some macaroni and cheese off the kids menu, and Jenny thinks a salmon filet with some vegetables sounds divine in that moment. She uses the phone on the other nightstand to call it down, and Matilda waits at the door with all the eagerness of a child waiting for Santa.

The person who delivers it jumps a bit when a small child yanks the door open practically before he can knock. Matilda takes the food with a, “Thank you!” and closes it behind her as she rushes towards the bed Jenny is sitting on.

They both smile at their plates as they see the divine looking food. Matilda happily tucks in, and offers Jenny a bite of her mac and cheese. Jenny does the same with her fish, and they have a peacefully quiet meal.

After that is bedtime. Jenny is worried Matilda is so wound up by the events of today that she may never sleep again.

“Why don’t you pick one of your new books and come read it to me, hm?” she asks as a beginning strategy. Matilda roots through the bag and returns with, shockingly, not the Dickens novel she’d been so desperate for.

“I want to wait until I get home,” she explains.

“Ah,” Jenny says with a nod. Matilda settles on her bed next to Jenny’s and opens the book. Jenny gets under the covers in her bed and takes a deep breath as she rests her head on the pillows. She listens to Matilda’s elegantly lilting, yet still adorably childish voice as she reads aloud to her.

But something still feels wrong. Matilda pauses partway through the second chapter and sheepishly asks, “Mum, can I sleep in your bed?”

“I was just about to ask the same thing,” Jenny says, popping one eye back open with a smile. She carefully scoots over and pats the empty space on the bed next to her. Matilda beams and leaps across, tucking herself in next to her and opening the book back up.

She continues to read until her eyes get too heavy to keep open. She carefully marks their place and leaves the book on the nightstand. Jenny turns off the lights while Matilda adjusts herself to be lying comfortably.

“Goodnight. I love you,” Jenny whispers, gently kissing Matilda’s forehead.

“Goodnight,” Matilda echoes. “And I love you every day. Not just tomorrow.”

“Every day,” Jenny replies with a smile. Matilda tucks into her chest and they both drift off to sleep with a smile on their face.

It's that time of year again! The 5th annual Bookstore Romance Day is almost upon us. Saturday, August 19th will be full of great romances and equally great giveaways and deals, both from us and from our audiobook partners at Libro.fm. You can sign up for free virtual panels featuring a variety of topics and amazing romance authors, or stop by the store for fun displays of romances of all sorts. In case you want to get a head start on some great recommendations, a few of our staff have highlighted favorite recent romance reads below!

Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams

Florist Annie Walker is the youngest, sweetest sister of four. Orphaned at an early age, Annie's grown up under the protective wing of her older brother and two older sisters, not to mention the close-knit (and nosy) population of Rome, Kentucky. But now Annie would really like to find "the one," settle down, and have a family. That would fill the emptiness that nothing else seems to satisfy, right? Except Annie's social anxiety makes dating a nightmare, and when her most recent date fakes an emergency to ditch her, Annie is ready to give it all up. Enter tattooed bodyguard Will Griffin, back in town to guard Annie's future sister-in-law, pop star Amelia. Will agrees to be Annie's dating coach, just to give her tips and practice with the things that seem so hard when she's in the middle of a date. Unsurprisingly, the more time Annie and Will spend together, the closer they become, and the more Annie wonders what she's going to do when Will's assignment with Amelia is over. Annie is so delightful as a character, trying to break out of the box her siblings, and everyone in the town have put her in -- and with Will she is able to explore aspects of her personality that she hasn't shown anyone else. Will, of course, has his own past to contend with, and his own hangups to overcome. I listened to the audiobook on this one, and the dual narration really brought the novel to life. As I say in my rec card, "the most adorable small-town romance."

With Love, From Cold World by Alicia Thompson

Even though I think there is too much talk about tropes these days, it does work as a quick way to sum up a story. With Love, From Cold World seems like it would be easy to categorize. It's an Enemies to Lovers, workplace romance. The author ticks a few classic Rom-Com boxes - stuck in the office overnight together, beach trip sunscreen application, the setting is an almost too-quirky Winter-themed amusement park in Florida called Cold World. But hold on - there's more going on here that just that. Every layer starting with something as simple as the cover and continuing on to the emotions of the main characters is handled with a little more thought and a little less cookie-cutter storytelling. Lauren is a buttoned-up accountant, but getting her to open up and take risks for friendship and love didn't feel simple. Asa is a career Cold World employee who is not living up to his potential, but actually maybe he's doing great right where he is. There were moments I laughed, got choked up, and—of course—s​wooned. I found their getting together to be surprisingly touching. Definitely recommend for the romance reader as well as the romance-curious.

Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee

All Dylan Tang wants is to help keep his aunt's struggling Chinese takeout, Wok Warriors, afloat. He has a plan, too. Win the Mid-Autumn Festival mooncake competition—using his grandmother's unique blue mooncake recipe—and get Wok Warriors featured on a popular food television show. There are only two problems: 1) his aunt doesn't have the recipe, and 2) Theo Somers. After Dylan has an unfortunate run-in with Theo's best friend, Theo (wealthy, charming, and very attractive) tries to make it up to him by making a rather large donation to the takeout. Unable to refuse the needed money but not wanting to ​owe any favors, Dylan agrees to be Theo's fake date to a family wedding. But a weekend in the Hamptons surrounded by rich-people problems and having to contend with his growing attraction to Theo as they get to know each other might be more than he bargained for. Will sabotage, scandal, and stress get in the way of their budding relationship, or will Dylan learn the secret ingredients for both mooncakes and romance? Short, sweet, and a quick read, Fake Dates and Mooncakes was everything I wanted. Delicious food descriptions and a fake dating plot where they don't mess around too long saying, "Oh, it started as fake but now I have feelings for him and I can't act on them because we had an agreement!" (my least favorite part of the trope), took it over the top. Also, the cover art! I'm in love.

Long story short, next Saturday should be a lot of fun. Good vibes, good people, and good books. Come stop by and celebrate love and people who love love!

2. Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

Memory loss, but also growing old together. I think both tropes would require a lot of care and nuance to go into characterization that'd be very interesting to me

4. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Care to share one of them?

Quite a few, actually! A couple of one-shots I'm working on, but also long-fics that I'm not sure whether I'll have the time or energy to tackle

The one most likely (still unlikely) to see the light of day is a post-rumbling, fake-dating fic because everyone's trying to get the new ambassador of peace to marry their daughter and Armin is (and Annie) just getting sick of it all

I mostly want it to be Armin-centric, everything that "Take my hand" fic was meant to be but couldn't (sorry Moon)

8. Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

This probably wont' be the most honest/accurate answer, but since my brain has been flooded with ch 20 for the past 2 weeks-ish straight, it's gotta be this:

“I knew it, you and your plans,” Annie breathes with a small laugh, and it’s enough to make him smile, too. It always is. “What? You’re planning on marrying me on a remote beach somewhere?” “I will,” he promises. “You’ll get sand in your shoes.” She smiles. “Our friends will all be there.” He hopes. “The cake will get dirty.” She frowns. “I’ll promise to love you,” he vows. “We’ll spend the whole night brushing sand out of our hair instead of anything fun.” she pouts. “Yeah.” “I think I’d like that, Armin,” she murmurs, voice soft in his ears as she shuffles closer.

Dialogue is already not my strongest suit, so whenever I find myself writing bits that just flow between the two characters, I'm immediately pleased!

11. Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?

Is there a difference between the two? I've been writing stuff and imagining worlds and scenarios since as far back as I could remember. I find writing to be an excellent practice of empathy and compassion, for not only people I may otherwise not fully understand, but also extending it to myself and how I may be feeling at specific times but having a hard time realize

definitely a passion!

12. Is there an episode above all others that inspires you just a little bit more?

I wouldn't say an episode/chapter, since I'm mostly consuming aot as whole arcs. But definitely the final arc, not only for aruani, but also as a life philosophy, if that makes sense lol

15. If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?

I mean... I wanna saw BW, since that's the apple of my eye, but I also fail to see how so much internal monologue and emotional writing can be distilled into an image (but then again, I'm not well versed in the visual arts)

It's gonna have to be I'm begging for you to take my hand

16. If you only could write one pairing for the rest of your life, which pairing would it be?

I may be biased to my current writing, but I can totally see myself exploring a wide variety of human emotions and circumstances with Armin and Annie in the aot universe and outside it

27. How do you feel about collaborations?

Never been in one before. It's intriguing but also the perfect opportunity for my imposter syndrome to step in and fear of disappointing other writers I may be working alongside

28. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

It'd be hypocritical not to mention @/you first! Not only is your writing incredibly poetic and artistic in nature, it also delves into the very depths of a character's emotions. It feels like I'm writing something that should be categorized as literary, instead of just writing or fiction

Yes and no. When I do I usually only do it for very short drabbles just as an exercise in writing and have some "mindless" fun so I don't have to stress over every single word I write

Contrary to how most of the world seemed to view her, Annabelle didn’t consider herself stupid. Hot headed at times, absolutely. Selfish, entitled, and a little insensitive? Confirmative. But she wasn’t some naive child that needed to be sheltered and protected, despite what her father thought. Annie knew her dad loved her, and she completely understood how lucky she was to have somebody looking out for her in the ways that he did, but she had come to a point in her life where she was feeling altogether, completely and utterly alone. 

By no means did Annie think she didn’t have friends. She did, and she was so lucky to be surrounded by so many amazing people, but with her father’s constant watchful eye, and a security detail over her shoulder almost every hour of every day, she was rarely allowed the opportunity to just go out and have fun. Coffee dates with Rae were dampened by the presence of Kenny – her lanky and loveable, but ultimately overbearing glorified babysitter. Days out with Henry and Chess usually required an extra pair of eyes – generally in the form of Kenny’s broody boyfriend Harvey – as her father dreaded the unwanted attention that ‘cavorting with rockstars’ might bring her. She’d once clapped back that if he thought cat cafés and trips to the park with Hazel classified as cavorting, that he’d hate to hear about what she and Henry used to get up to as teens in Monaco – a retort that had landed her a month-long ban on seeing him at all. 

Truthfully, there was a grand total of three people that her father seemed to trust her around, the only three people in the world that she seemed allowed to spend time with sans a chaperone; Elias Hewitt, Dante Lee, and Jackson Otto. Fortunately, the three of them just so happened to be her favourite people in the whole, but it hadn’t gone unnoticed to Annie what they all appeared to have in common with her father. She’d pondered for years over the possibility that her friendship with the boys might merely be an act, that the three of them only spent time with her under her father’s orders, presumably hating every last minute of listening to her loud-mouth remarks and playful flirting. Whatever their intentions, and whatever the truth was behind their friendship, it didn’t stop Annie from missing the three of them while they were gone. 

Tentative as he often was to land her in the spotlight, Michael Baxter had agreed that Annie could accompany him to Florida ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. His ground rules – much like Australia – had been firm and strict, leaving Annie little-to-no time to explore on her own, nor touch base with Jax or Dante as she’d been dying to do for so long now. She knew she’d bump into Elias one way or another – the handsome boy so often acting as her father’s shorter, paler shadow – but she’d fought hard to even step foot on Miami soil, and she wanted to make the most of it. 

Despite direct orders to not leave the hotel without her father – as well as to check in with him if she even so much as wanted to leave their suite – Annie had managed to slip past his lackies, and was now enjoying the comfort of the hot, Floridian sun against her skin.  

Of course, she didn’t want to completely piss her father off, with every intention of keeping her head low and staying out of sight of anybody who might recognise her. Donning a McLaren baseball cap in a hideous orange that she was certain Jax would burn if he saw it, and a pair of shorts that had the Mercedes logo printed on each ass-cheek, she was fairly positive nobody would suspect she had any affiliation with Ferrari. And, if they did, then she figured it would make one hell of a headline. 

Anxiety coursed through her veins as she walked the City, thinking absently of her friends. Some days, Annie wondered if enough time and distance meant they forgot about her, that men like Jackson and Dante simply went about their days feeling lighter without her constant presence. It didn’t do well for her to get caught up in her own insecurities, but it was often hard to keep them at bay. 

With a sigh, she pressed the heel of her palm to her eyes, rubbing gently to will away both the building migraine and the unwanted thoughts nagging in the back of her mind. Just as she withdrew her hand, some jackass on a skateboard sped past her, his shoulder colliding with Annie’s own. Immediately she felt her legs buckle beneath her, the speed of the impact knocking her off her feet, causing her to hurtle onto the concrete beneath her. Her knees harshly collided with the ground, a hiss of pain whistling between her teeth, and Annie’s head immediately shot up to glare after the moron who, of course, had come away entirely unscathed and was now careening around the corner without a care in the world. 

“You asshole,” Annie called out, momentarily forgetting that she was meant to be keeping a low profile. 

Groaning, she stared down at the blood now mapping her knees, both grazed and looking a little worse for wear. Daddy would not be happy with her once he realised she’d not only disobeyed his orders but had potentially hurt herself in the process. 

“Stupid, bitchass, low-rent Floridian Tony Hawk motherfucker,” she mumbled under her breath.

The Beginner: Federal Agencies, which likely ensures a sixth season (although nothing has been announced yet). With time and chemistry, Chenford was born.

The romantic relationship between Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) probably wasn’t intentional, so the reason the two ended up on the slow lane can be attributed to a passionate fan base and open-minded cast and creators. Lucy even started it The beginner in a relationship with protagonist John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), but that was funnily dropped in season one because of the stigma of dating another cop. Thankfully, Lucy doesn’t seem to have the same issue with Tim, further cementing this pair as endgame-worthy. So what’s going on?

Chenford’s Foundation

The couple’s relationship begins with a teacher/student dynamic, with Tim as a rookie becoming Lucy’s training officer. The first season more or less builds their relationship, with Tim being a hardass for lack of a better term. Lucy is engaged with Nolan for most of the season, but their bond is explored more after Tim is exposed to a weaponized virus that puts his life on the line, leading to one of the first emotional moments between the two. Another important moment between the two happens when Lucy is drugged from a date and essentially kidnapped by Rosalind Dyer (Annie Wersching), one of the many antagonists who overstepped their welcome The beginner. It is Tim who is able to find her and dig her out of a buried barrel and later sits by her bedside in the hospital. It was these dramatic and traumatic events that facilitated their bond and proved that these two would stay by each other’s sides regardless of their LAPD duties.

One of the other major ways Chenford’s relationship has evolved has been how they have challenged each other. Be it through their opposing viewpoints or their different love interests in the earlier seasons. Lucy and Tim always had a push and pull dynamic that made them fun to watch. Though their relationship changed a lot over the show’s first four seasons, needless to say, despite their outward differences, trust was built between them. Chenford is a couple that will make your heart skip a beat. Except once they got together. And then.

Where they went wrong

Season 4 ended on a big note when the two, posing as a couple, kiss to convince some criminals of their authenticity. Tim and Lucy even convince themselves, leading them to almost react to new undeniable feelings in the season 5 premiere, until they are interrupted by finding another gift from the gift they keep giving, Rosalind dyers Search for Lucy’s friend Chris (Kanoa Goo), with life-threatening injuries, slows things down for the couple, causing them to contemplate all the ramifications and complications that come with starting a romantic relationship. It is not until the ninth episode of the season that Tim asks Lucy out after she breaks up with Chris. The way the two come together, speaking things out and being pragmatic might tick all the boxes for some fans, but the beginning of their relationship still feels too easy. This beginning loses all the tension and anxiety that her relationship had before her established romantic relationship. Put simply, it’s boring.

That brings us to the 10 or so episodes that the couple is seen together. There’s no denying that these two are cute together and their chemistry exists, but the main issue here is their pacing, which might give a committed viewer a bit of whiplash. It took Tim and Lucy four seasons to get to the point where they could accept, let alone admit, their feelings for each other, and just a few episodes after they’ve agreed on a date, they’re already pondering their future after having kids How. Despite this, Chenford goes from 0 to 100 real fast, and while there is an issue with many shows being subject to cancellation, The beginner has been a sure bet for renewal in recent seasons. There doesn’t seem to be any real reason why the pair need to rush major milestones in their relationship, especially given how quickly it’s taken to get here.

Are Chenford Victims of the ‘Moonlight Curse’?

Just because Chenford is finally dating doesn’t mean it is The beginner should play it safe with his fan favorite couple. Delivering cute GIF-able moments is all well and good, but if Lucy makes a five-player trade to give Tim a new job, the most interesting conflict is going to be between the two, then maybe it should have been balanced more building their romantic relationship. With the plethora of plots they could get as characters on a cop show, the couple could easily get something more dramatic that could linger longer, rather than just ticking off a checklist and jumping from point A to point B to point C.

The beginner landed something special with Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen. Although the original intent was probably not to make them a couple, the show paid attention to audience reaction and the chemistry that unfolded even in the earlier episodes, and despite the relative lack of focus the couple had, since it became canon, Chenford at her worst is still better than any relationship Nolan is at his best. So while Chenford suffers a bit from the moonlighting curse, the pair are still incredibly entertaining to watch. However, with the history and connection that Tim and Lucy have, there’s more than enough time to correct course for the pair to fulfill their full potential and further cement their place in pop culture as fan-favorite lucky breaks.

Week 7 – Artist – Nan Goldin & Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz is a photographer, specifically a portrait photographer. She is best known for her portrait pictures which were taken in the moment. For every picture, we are able to identify what the person in the image is going through based on their facial expression or in the one frame of movement. She would usually take the image when the person is doing some sort of action, rather than when the person is standing still. Nan Goldin on the other hand also presents her work of art through photography, but rather in a different field of photography. Her goal is to demonstrate images that correlate to the LGBTQ+ subcultures, moments of intimacy and crisis. In other words, her pictures often explore the LGBTQ+ world and give the audience an insight of what it would look like for someone who is in the community. 

This image was taken by Annie Leibovitz of Tennessee Williams and Maria Just. This image just looks like a lot of fun based on the scenery and how the man and the woman look. The people in the image are looking at something, probably something in the distance, and they are having the time of their lives. Just by looking at this image, it gives me a very happy and positive vibe that makes me want to go hang out with them. Although there isn’t anything fancy about the picture, it definitely speaks to the audience and draws the audience’s attention to the mood of the image.

This image was taken by Nan Goldin and it is called Trixie on the Cot. I chose this image because it just looks like something people can relate to. I personally don’t get wasted, but from the looks of this image, the female in the picture is drunk and just completely done from drinking. She looks like a complete mess and I can see a lot of people relating to this image at their first college party. Everything about the image just makes it work so well, such as the lighting to the setting to the woman’s pose. 

In terms of the difference, the only thing that I can think of would be the message or the meaning being portrayed from the images. Both photographers have their own different goals of sharing the type of content specific to their appeal. Besides the meaning behind the photographs, I think that their styles are fairly close and similar. All of their pictures are when people are just living in the moment and living life. The pictures weren’t planned per say, but rather taken at a random point in time, allowing the picture to have a raw and authentic feeling. 

If I had to hire a photographer, I would easily choose Annie Leibovitz. I dig her whole vibe and style of taking pictures. The way she is able to capture moments of people just living life really speaks to me and makes me wish that I took more pictures. She shows how pictures can be a way of showing you moments in life that will be memorable for when you look back at it a few years later. The types of pictures she has doesn’t require any dates or description of what the picture is about, since the picture speaks for itself.

notes: this is a gn!reader. there are mentions of makeup being used, but i feel like any gender can use makeup. it's not even anything serious like a beat face. just some lip gloss n mascara. chapstick too but thats not makeup. it's just one line, so you can skip over it if you would like to!

✩ eren bites you. its not even in a sexual way, he just likes to bite. they’re like a second form of kissing to him. you could be chilling together on the couch watching a movie, and he’ll just chomp on your shoulder. even when you were trying to focus on something, he swings by, bites then leaves. eren has no shame, so he does it in front of your friends too. you could be having a normal conversation with mikasa and he’ll just bite you, then the two of you carry on as if it was normal. it’s not normal. but you love it. sometimes you bite him back too. but only in private.

✩ armin gives you random things he finds. armin likes to go out and explore, with or without you. when he comes back after an adventure you opted out of, he always has something for you he found. a rock, a seashell or a cool flower are just some of the things he gets for you. if he can’t find something, he finds a gift shop to get you something instead, saying, “well, (y/n), i did find it in the gift shop.” he always looks so proud giving it to you, rambling about the story of how he found your gift. you have a small box tucked away with all the treasures he gives you.

✩ jean steals your things. whenever he comes over, he likes to mooch off your possessions. if he’s spending the night at your place and needs a shower, he’s using your shampoo, conditioner and body wash. if his lips are chapped, he swipes your lip balm to use on himself. one time you even walked in on him trying your mascara and lip gloss. another time he had your clothes on his giant frame. but he always replaces whatever he uses, venmoing you within the next few days with some cash and a sorry note. “sorry for using ur lip balm baby, buy some more <3” with $20 attached to it. you tell him that lip balm doesn’t even cost that much, but he tells you to treat yourself to lunch with the extra money.

✩ connie makes plans without letting you know beforehand. at 3am, you are woken up by an influx of messages and calls from your boyfriend. in your sleepy state you go to answer him, only to be told to get dressed and come out. he’s right outside of your house and hungry. you remind him it’s very early in the morning and you both have class. “but i’m hungry and craving burgers,” he repeats. you have no choice to get in the car with him. this can happen throughout the day, not just early in the morning. one time he whisked you away in the middle of your online class because he didn’t tell you he bought tickets to a movie showing in 30 minutes. the memories you share on these spontaneous dates are always your favorite ones with him.

✩ erwin buys you whatever you like in bulk. it’s not even an exaggeration when you say bulk. you mention one thing to him, and the next day there are boxes upon boxes sitting on your kitchen counter. “these oranges taste pretty good,” you mumble to yourself as you peel your 2nd one. erwins sharp ears hear this, and first thing in the morning he’s off to buy multiple bags of your supposed favorite oranges. it takes you days, sometimes weeks, to finish whatever he decided to buy you. you always tell him he doesn’t need to buy so much, but he never listens. though, you always appreciate how attentive he is to your likes and dislikes.

✩ levi cleans up for you and ruins your organization. it’s always a blessing when someone else decides to take on the burden of cleaning for you, and you thought you hit the jackpot with a boyfriend who loved to clean, clean, clean. but it could get annoying when you suddenly couldn’t find anything you placed anywhere. if you’re anything like me, you’re messy but organized. you know where things are. when levi comes to clean, he places things where he thinks they should go. you’re sent on a wild goose chase looking for your pencil case, only for it to be in a completely different drawer than the one you usually kept it in. despite this behavior, it’s always nice to come home from a long day from school to see your desk organized. what was once a mess of papers and other supplies have been filed into their correct places, the table wiped down from any lingering coffee stains and your supplies being organized in a way so you knew where everything was. sometimes there’d be a plate of fruit with the note, “good luck on your exams,” written in your boyfriends neat writing beside it.

✩ reiner coddles you too much. whenever you express any sort of discomfort, reiner is always rushing to your side. “are you hurt? do you need medical attention? how many fingers am i holding up?” he asks, checking you for any cuts or bruises. thank you, honey, but i’m fine. just bumped into the counter. despite that, he’s dragging you over to the bathroom to fix up your imaginary injuries. you always find it a bit much when you’re fine. it’s during the times where you’re actually hurt where you learn to appreciate it. he’s so gentle cleaning your cuts, kissing them softly once they’re dressed. you wonder if he’d be like that with your future children.

✩ bertholdt is too nervous around you. it’s been years since the two of you got together, and he still refuses to make eye contact with you. his hands get sweaty and shake when you attempt to hold his hand. he always stumbles over his words when speaking to you as he tries to find the right words to say. he even blushes when he introduces you to other people as his significant other! you remind bertholdt over and over again that he doesn’t need to be so shy around you. but you cant help but coo over him showing up for your date, flustered mess and thrusting flowers into your hand. “they reminded me of you,” he said quietly, refusing to meet your eyes. you giggle and press a kiss to his hot cheeks.

✩ porco is too cocky for his own good. he’s always parading around the house, boasting about his latest achievements. he beat colt in a video game colt was a supposed god in. he can throw a baseball farther than zeke. he can run faster than pieck. if he’s taller than you, he's always making fun of you for being shorter than him. if you’re taller, you’re not exempt from his wrath either. he’s boasting about how he’s perfect height to not hit his head on doorways. he never goes as far as to hurt your feelings, always knowing when to stop. though he has a big ego, he would let it crash and burn just to see you smile after beating him at smash bros. you laugh and taunt him, happy you beat him in one thing. he doesn’t mind, instead watching you with a soft smile on his lips and love in his eyes.

✩ zeke forces you to work out with him. and it’s not like in the afternoon to help you stretch out. it’s not light yoga or a couple minutes on the treadmill. no, this man wakes you up at ass crack in the morning to take you on a 5 mile hiking trip. you barely have any time to register what is happening around you before you’re already standing at the start of the trail with your gear. “come on! we can’t slack off!” he says, clapping his hands together. the sun is beating down on you and your feet hurt, but this man doesn’t let you stop for a break. “we’re almost there,” he says. your complaining goes out the window when he shows you the view at the top. its one of the most beautiful things you’ve ever seen. hiking up long ass trails to see beautiful views with your boyfriend was so worth it in the end.

✩ colt accidentally turns your dates into babysitting sessions. you show up at his house with the promise of a good time, only to be met with a guilty looking colt and his little brother falco behind him. “sorry,” he says sheepishly, “gabi got sick with the cold, so i couldn’t drop him off there. i hope you don’t mind him staying.” you hide your disappointment behind a wide smile, nodding enthusiastically as to not hurt either of their feelings. you just wanted to spend some alone time with your boyfriend, and it would have to wait. hanging out with falco wasn’t actually that bad. the three of you had an amazing time together, watching tv, playing games and even baking together. if you hate kids, you can’t bring yourself to hate falco; he’s just the sweetest boy you’ve ever met. you and falco are already asking colt when the three of you can hang out again when you have to go back home.

✩ hanji is always talking. you don’t discourage them from talking about their interests. they’re very passionate about the things they love, and can’t help talking about them. its like the scene where hanji kept eren up all night talking about titans. when you’re trying to focus on something or go to sleep, hanji is just yapping away. you’re honestly amazed at their ability to never run out of things to say about the most mundane things. hell, one time they talked for an hour and a half about a building color they saw when they were out one day. but hanji just looked so happy when talking. their face would break out into a huge grin, and their arms would fly around as they told their story. it was too cute for you to tell them to stop.

✩ mikasa hovers too much. every corner you turn, every place you go to, mikasa is following. she claims she’s not clingy, but in reality she is. it’s like a cat who hates affection, but needs to be in the same room as you at all times. you don’t mind her following you into the bedroom or living room or kitchen. you had to draw a line when she tried to follow you into the bathroom. even when you’re out, she’s always following you around. you tell her it’s okay to break off from you and spend some time by herself, but she always shakes her head and follows you to your next destination. you’re always grateful for her hovering when a group of drunk people try hitting on you, whistling and telling you they’ll give you a good time. but one look at your girlfriend who showed up from out of nowhere, and they’re running away with their tails between their legs.

✩ sasha eats your food. she can’t help it. she likes to snack. she’s always hungry. and you get that. to stop things like this from happening, you have separate places to keep your food. just so sasha and you have your favorite snacks and takeout separated. you respect the rule, but your girlfriend seems to lose her reading skills when hungry, one too many times you have walked in on her with her hand deep into a bag of your chips, something you’ve been waiting to eat all week when you were supposed to watch that new horror movie on netflix with her. you huff and puff and retreat to your bedroom. sasha comes back after a few hours, looking upset with tons and tons of snacks in her arms. “i’m sorry i ate your chips,” she frowns. she sets down all the food she got on your bed. “i got all these snacks you liked as an apology. and 3 bags of your favorite chips.” you could never stay mad at her cute face.

✩ annie complains about spending time with you. “i like my alone time,” she says, brushing you off when you asked why she didn’t want to watch a movie with you. some people were introverted, preferring to spend time by themselves rather than with someone else. you were like that too; you had your moments where you didn’t feel like being around your girlfriend. but it became an annoying problem when she constantly shot down your attempts to hang out with you. when she finally agrees, she’s always finding something to complain about. but during important dates or when you’re not in the best mood, she’s always the first to remind you or initiate a hang out/date. she shuts her mouth and enjoys her time with you, not one criticism or groan leaving her lips. she would never admit it, but being around you made her so happy.

✩ pieck is always sleeping. you have to wait a few hours to get a text or call back from pieck because she’s always dozing off somewhere. “sorry sweets,” she yawns into the mic, “was taking a nap. need something?” good luck trying to reach your girlfriend during an emergency. when you come home with takeout for dinner because neither of you wanted to cook, she’s sleeping at the dinner table. when you’re watching a movie she wanted to watch, she’s snoring away, curled up at the end of the couch. during lectures you share together, she has her head in her arms and has the audacity to ask you for your notes in the end. and it’s not like she’s not getting enough sleep, no. she gets her recommended 8 hours of sleep and then some. it’s nice to have a sleepy girlfriend, though, when you’re dead tired from living. you drag your feet into the bedroom to see her about to take her nth nap for the day. she notices your zombie-like state and opens up her arms for you. the two of you cuddle and nap together, sleeping the stress away.

How would they act on a first date?

Oh I've been waiting for this one-

𝕊𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕘𝕖𝕜𝕚 ℕ𝕠 𝕂𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕛𝕚𝕟 𝔽𝕚𝕣𝕤𝕥 𝔻𝕒𝕥𝕖 ℍ𝕖𝕒𝕕𝕔𝕒𝕟𝕠𝕟𝕤

Levi: He'd want to take you to the most high class and expensive restaurant, but he's certain that would scare you off. Instead, he decides to go with a nice, quiet, candlelit dinner in his apartment featuring a bottle of alcohol of your choosing and a homemade meal he prepared himself. One of his favorite hobbies was cooking, and if creating something unique was the way to win you over, he'd do it for the rest of his life.

Armin: He'd suggest the idea of something outdoors-y, which made you concerned at first. There was something about a sweaty hiking date that just didn't seem that appealing to you. He'd later clarify and explain that he was thinking more along the lines of a picnic and stargazing, once the sun goes down. After your meal, you two would lay on a blanket in the middle of a field, pointing out each shining star. A shooting star would pass overhead, and he'd wish that this date would last forever.

Annie: Her idea of a cute first date is borderline a study date. Thankfully, there are no tests or exams to prepare for, but there was something about sitting in a peaceful library with a good book that just made her happy. And of course she wanted to share that experience with you. She'd also be lying if the library date had nothing to do with the family-owned bakery right next door, which she swore had the best muffins.

Eren: He would want to take you somewhere special, but exhilarating. Unfortunately, something like a monster truck arena isn't too romantic, so he'd settle for a go-kart track. He kept making comments about how he'd beat you, but there was something about seeing you in the next kart over, with the wind rushing through your hair, that made his heart soar. This was a good enough distraction to speed up and beat him to the finish line.

Jean: He has dreamt of taking you ice skating for as long as he can remember. He always felt that an ice skating rink was kinda romantic, and maybe he was hanging onto the idea that if you were kinda clumsy on skates, you’d have to hold his hand to stay upright. After watching him crash land on the cold surface a few times, you’d offer to take a break and go get some hot cocoa. Jean would use this as an excuse to wrap his arm around you while you sat on the benches off to the side of the rink.

Bertholdt: His ideal first date would be to take you to a museum. It didn’t really matter which kind, honestly, but he’d try to shoot for one that fit your interests. Whether it was an art museum or some sort of science museum, he’d be watching you instead of whatever building you two were exploring. The way your eyes would light up when explaining something was far more interesting to him than what was displayed around the museum.

Mikasa: A perfect first date for her would be something casual and quiet, like a coffee date. It may be surrounded by a bunch of strangers at the local coffee shop, but she could swear it would feel like just the two of you. She'd opt for a table near the window so you two could people-watch and make up stories about pedestrians as they pass by. At one point, you got whipped cream on your nose from your coffee, which she took a picture of. You'd find out later that she set it as her phone background.

Connie: With Connie being the giant goofball that he is and harnessing an unholy amount of energy, he'd want to do something fun like going to an amusement park. The two of you would walk around the entire day, hand in hand, taking turns feeding each other cotton candy and winning stupid plush prizes. You went into one of those haunted boat ride-type rides, and he took this an opportunity to place a soft kiss on your cheek.

A/N: This took me literal days to decide what kind of dates these characters would go on, but I loved it!! Please continue to send me requests, I'll even do specific characters and short one-shots :D
