i’ve seen so many of these n there so creative 😭😭
this was def fun to write but i needed my bf for help on some.
(using my callsign again :3 ‘Shark’)
Not even a question that Shark would disrupt both Soap and Ghost to teach them how to do the stanky leg. Soap was literal ass with it, stiff and awkward, but he got the general idea.
Shark and Soap had to practically beg Ghost to do it, on their knees and hands clamped together. Shark even offered the last 7 dollars in their bank account for him to do it. Eventually he caved in. Surprisingly he’s actually really good, pretty smooth with it. But never again that this would happen. When pigs fly.
It was a daily occurrence for Shark to pester and poke at every member of the team. Today, it was König’s misfortune to be Shark’s victim today. Sitting in the common room while you bounced beside him. Hands up and guarding like you were boutta fight someone.
“Punch you in the face, elbow you in the face” You said in a stupid voice while fake punching him, stopping just before you actually touch him.
“Neck slice!” You take a little spin and hold the edge of your hand to his clothed neck. All König does is sigh and look up at you, obvious dark eye bags under his eyes.
Gaz suggested that everyone have a shared playlist amongst everyone, helps bring everyone closer, and it’ll be fun to listen to each others’ music while on mission or during training.
It was a good idea at first with everyone adding in their own songs. A weird mixed jumble of everyone unique and different music taste. But Shark’s was the most different, stuck out like a sore thumb. You could even tell when Shark would subtly do a little dance whenever it came on during a mission.
“My d-ck is big. My d-ck is very big. My d-ck is big, is big, is very very big” It boomed through the speakers of the training room, everyone froze or stopped their sparring when they heard the song. The only person who continued was Shark, swaying their hips a little to the beat of the song.

Sweeping and empty establishment for any potential leftover enemies. König behind Shark against the wall with Price, Soap, Gaz, and Ghost against the other. It was an old apartment. Something caught Shark’s eye. Putting their hand up for everyone to stop.
Everyone thinking that they caught something, but instead they pull out their phone and take a photo of the four against a blue wall.
“What is it?” Gaz asks, wondering if they really did catch something but rolled his eyes when Shark started laughing at the fresh picture on their phone. Four men standing in front of a blue wall.
“You wouldn’t get it” They chuckled before stuffing their phone back in and signaling for everyone to continue.
“Remind me not to let them be lead again” Price muttered.
“Are you sure this is 100% safe to drink?” Gaz asked as he stared down at his cup, trying not to breathe in it’s toxic fumes.
“I’m pretty sure this stuff is radioactive” Ghost muttered under his breath. Holding the glass up to inspect it like it was a new found alien.
“I’m sure the old geezer would kick the bucket after a whiff of this” Soap chuckled to himself, earning a hard back of the head blow from the captain.
“You guys are being dramatic” Shark rolled their eyes. Earlier in the day, they begged Price to take them to buy something they wanted all of them to try. After enough begging and pleading he caved in.
“I don’t think zis is a good idea” König looked up at you, taking a single gummy worm from the rim as a little treat.
It was a mix of monster, half filled with cherry slushee, sour gummy worms rimming the plastic martini glass, 2 War beads dropped at the bottom, simmering at the top, a handful of sour patch kids, baby bottle pop powder mixed in, and a little bit of blue gatorade.
They saw it on social media and wanted to try it out, it wasn’t like it would be a daily drink, just to try it once. (Seriously though, do not consume this on a regular basis, let alone at all).
After enough hyping up, pep talk, and a countdown. They all took a mouthful of their witches potion concoction. Gaz spit it out, Ghost almost gagged, and Soap lost his vison. Price took it surprisingly well. Not even Shark was able to swallow half of it.
It gave them weird jitters and a big boost in energy. In one night they were able to deep clean the entire base, finally organize the arsenal, somehow separate all of the cereals. The marshmallows from the lucky charms, separate all the colors of the Fruit loops, and remove all the raisins in Raisin Bran.
They all woke up the next day feeling like they drank 19 gallons of alcohol the night before. Price slept like a baby, he actually felt a lil more energized when he woke up.
Price had been walking around all day, searching for Shark to ask for one of their reports. He knocks and barges into Gaz’s barracks. Finding him laying on his stomach on his bed and a comic book in front of him.
“Gaz, have ya’ seen Shark anywhere?” Price walks in with his hands on his hips. Gaz looks up at his captain then back at Shark that’s been discretely following close behind him for the past 10 minutes he’s been searching.
Looked at his captain, back to Shark, who shook their head and made and x with their fingers.
“Ehh.. No?” He hesitated, finding it amusing but needing to keep in a steady front.
“Al’right, champ. Thanks” He shakes his head before leaving the room with the missing soldier behind him, Price muttering frustrated remarks as he continues to search.
Shark took it upon themselves to make a little cup of coffee for Price since they know he likes to drink a cup in the morning. Placing it in front of him and taking a seat next to their captain with a cup in front of them.
“Aww. Thanks, kid! You didn’t have to” He smiles warmly at them before taking a deep sip of his cup. Watching his soldier do the same he notices it isn’t coffee. A more clear, pale-yellowish kind of color with steam coming off of it.
“Didn’t know we had tea. What kind did you make?” He initiates conversation, still looking down at his little sudoku puzzle on the newspaper.
“Tea?”
“What— What are you drinking?” He looked up at them then back at the mystery drink in front of them.
“Oh. I just boiled a can of Red Bull”.
“What—“.
“What”.
Walking into the lobby with a watermelon in one hand and metal knife in the other, except the actual blade was broken in the middle of the watermelon. They all stared at Shark, then the watermelon.
“We need a new knife”.
Waking up at 2 AM, sleepily stumbling into the bathroom, Price walked into the bathroom for a midnight piss. After he was done he walked by Soap’s barracks, seeing the light was on and the door was cracked open.
Opening the door, he saw Soap and Shark in their pjs, sitting on the bed with their backs turned toward him. They both froze and looked at each other.
“What’re ya’ doin’ so late at night?” He roughly grumbled and leaned against the doorframe, eyes still adjusting to the light. But, they wouldn’t turn to look at him, just answering and nodding their head.
“What are ya’ doing?” He asked more concerned and confused this time. Noticing how they wouldn’t face him and was super dismissive. Now that he was directly behind them, they accepted defeat and looked up. Both with pink bow or bunny headbands and a sheet face mask on each of them.
“What”.
A couple minutes later he’s laying on his stomach with a matching sheet mask and a black cat headband. Talking to his soldiers about his wife. Soap and Shark listening intently.
Visiting Shark’s home while they’re on a health leave to check on them, they all sat on the country house porch—Shark’s casted leg up on a stool— and talked about the missions they missed out on and how they were doing.
Gaz and König were playing and messing around with the farm animals, König’s was more petting and loving on the cows and goats while Gaz was feeding the little duckies.
König was running around, the cows playfully chasing him as he did.
“NO, LITTLE GERMAN BOY! DONT RUN INTO THE ELECTRIC FENCE” Shark called out once they saw him getting a little too close.
“Oh, mein gott! Zis fence is full of shocken!”
(Yes, I know he’s not german).

Rating Star Trek TOS costumes because why not! (part 10)

Bread and Circuses (2x25). This is not what I had in mind when I fantasized about these three as gladiators. Still, grey does look nice on them (especially the good Doctor 👀) and I do appreciate any chance they get to show off their forearms. 6/10.

See, this is what they should've had Kirk, Spock and McCoy wearing. These are basically party city costumes but bonus points for the ridiculous shields and the stylishly asymmetrical arm coverings. 7/10.

Scratch that, this is what the boys should have worn. As always creative cut-outs = futuristic fashion as far as TOS is concerned, and as always I am a fan. The gold looks really nice on the actress, 8/10.

Assignment: Earth (2x26). Okay, so this is just a dude in a suit but consider this: kitty! 100/10 for the cat, she's so stylish in her little sparkly collar. Nothing for the dude, get an imagination.

This is a background character that appears for all of 0.8 seconds but I am obsessed with her. That soft pink mini fur coat with the hood and the matching gloves and go go boots? To die for. 9/10, whatever party she's going to I want an invite.

Girl looks like a creamsicle and I mean that as a compliment. The pink stripe on her tights is a cute, creative detail as is the crochet purse. The black belt looks a little slapdash though and the cut of the skirt is sloppy, 7/10.

Warm and cozy yet stylish. They are going to an ice rink for a date or possibly on an espionage mission against the Soviets (also for a date). This is also an all-time great Spock hat. 9/10.

It’s time for gen 4, girl! I’m excited. But before we get down to business, I’ve got some explaining to do: Grandaddy Jacques Villareal kicked the bucket and left part of his inheritance to Gigi (bless MCCC). I swear I’m not cheating, but someone forgot to make the post and already deleted the screenshots. That said... Gigi has a $300,000 account to her name since she’s like 7, but now she can finally do whatever the hell she wants as a fresh, young adult.
Our girl listened to her inner Carrie Bradshaw and moved to San Myshuno, got a job in social media and rented a stupidly expensive apartment all for herself.

7. 💯A fic that makes you think #writergoals please
okay so i'm gonna do two, because one of these isn't TF and therefore will not be of interest to 99% of the folks following this blog, and i want people to. read these lol. so.
a tf one:
this is one of my favourite TF fics and definitely my favourite aligned fic. (and it is aligned, not just TFP-the-show; it does actually interesting stuff with the weird, fits-basically-nowhere Orion backstory from the Covenant, which i dig!) it's the sort of ship fic i read and realise i am at least as interested in for gen reasons as i am ship reasons, which i love. it has body horror! alien norms about what counts as body horror! alien cultural worldbuilding! perfect reinterpretation of aligned megop in a way that especially makes optimus so much more interesting than canon without feeling non canon! a Vibe i struggle to express but which is so Vibe-y! that last one is really my favourite thing about this fic and what i really envy. i wish i could write vibes that good. it's not quite horror but it feels like it's constantly brushing up against horror existing somewhere within it. i love it soooo much. <3
the non tf one is a death note one:
basically i just read this fic after i had my regrettable and ongoing descent into the "second death note phase in my thirties for some Fucking reason" lifestyle and was like. ah! someone has written the One death note fic that really needed to exist. i can be at peace now. it's a story that takes a source material that i personally find very unserious and makes me take it seriously, without ever feeling like either a) the author does not themselves respect the canon/source material or b) the author is taking said canon too seriously. this is an extremely hard balance to walk for a canon like this. the fic itself is so tonally distinct from the actual canon and yet never feels like it couldn't be one possible bucket-of-ice-water-over-the-head resolution to it. also it's upsetting! i love upsetting things (as opposed to sad things). writer goals for SURE.

It's time again for my one true love... an ask game. Thank you for the tag @o0anapher0o! This is one I have done before and I am sure as hell not going to let that stop me from talking about myself.

2. What's your total AO3 word count?
436,802 holy cow that is a lot of words.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
It's DS9 all day over here right now! I have also written for Good Omens, Queen's Thief, Tales of Symphonia, and Next Gen and Lower Decks.
4. Top 5 Fics By Kudos
I'm always interested in if the answer to this has changed, because sometimes it does in unexpected ways. Confess Nothing always tops the list, but this time it's only ahead by 2 with All's Fair in Love, War, and Show Business close behind. I'm really surprised to see Personnel Review in third place, because Garak doesn't even personally show up in that one and I always got the sense TNG was much less popular. Fourth place is Lost in Translation, which is not at all surprising. But fifth place does surprise me: It Isn't Perfect (But It's Ours)! Those Good Omens fics really snuck up there while I wasn't looking. (I think Season 2 release, even if I haven't posted anything new, did drive a spike in that fandom.)
5. Do you respond to comments?
I try to and I want to but there are 200 unread comments in my inbox right now and I simply have too much ADHD to deal with that, and then I don't respond to new ones because it's overwhelming and the problem is self-perpetuating. I've read them all in my email notifications, and they've made me smile and laugh and experience great joy! But I am overwhelmed about the idea of trying to reply.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Last time I answered this I hadn't ever written something with an angsty ending, but now with certainty I can say it's Like a pain, the truth is mine in the Terok Nor AU, which is all about Garak's developing addiction to the wire and exploration of self-harm to trigger it. Second place goes to I'd Like to Give Up Now and When All Kindness Has Gone. The interesting thing about all of these, though, is that they exist within the larger framework of what the reader already knows will happen next in canon, which is Garak will survive and make connections with others on the station and it isn't the end of the world that it feels like for him. So does that still count?
7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Not coincidentally, I'd probably say it's my two most kudos'd DS9 fics, Confess Nothing and Lost in Translation.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
The closest I've ever come to hate is someone commenting that I had a major tonal shift in the middle of a piece of writing, and they were correct. I have found the fandom to be incredibly kind, supportive, and generous.
9. Do you write smut?
SO once upon a time the answer to this was no but now we are inching our way towards a yes. I made a sock puppet account where I could experiment with writing more explicitly (it's lovely to have so many user subscriptions but also feels like a lot of pressure) and what I've found is there's simply not much more explicit that I'll go, but I'm trying.
10. Craziest crossover
The entirety of Thief Space 9, and of those specifically probably Spaceships and Gods.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of. Again, lovely fandom, beautiful people! I also have a standing policy that my works are a sandbox anyone can play in, so I have had remixes and things inspired by my work, but that's done with full permission and people bringing their own creative twists.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, that's the last thing outstanding on my 'bucket list', so to speak! My dreams were to have my fic inspire art, other fic, podfic, and translation, and we've achieved all but the last.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes and I'm a very bad co-author because there's a fic that's sat unfinished for actual literal years now and I'm not doing my part to finish it.
14. All time favorite ship?
I think I have an all-time favorite ship dynamic, which is any ship where one character could with both deep love and complete sincerity say to the other "I hate you, you're the worst person I know" as a form of foreplay.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I fear we're living in a world where I never finish anything ever again, but in particular there's one fic I posted to aforementioned sock puppet account specifically because I thought it might get permanently abandoned and I didn't want people knowing it was me if that happened because I am a coward
16. What are your writing strengths?
You know, the answer to this has changed! It used to just be dialogue, but now I'd like to think it's also my willingness to experiment with form/format and use even little moments to poke at big questions.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Look, I'm never going to be a writer of lush descriptions. We've come a long way, but settings are actually the worst.
18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
Hasn't changed- translate it if your POV character would understand it, leave it untranslated if they wouldn't. The point of how you write is to communicate information and convey emotion and whatever else to your audience, not to show off your conlang abilities.
19. First fandom you wrote in?
I think I've shared this before, but I wrote a self-insert ship fic with Shadow the Hedgehog for my older sibling for Sonic Adventure 2 Battle when I was far too young.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
I can't answer this. This is a cruel question. Um, at this exact moment in time, possibly Comparative Literature?

Random Numbers 101
(actually "pseudo-random number generators" but we'll get to that later)
Attempting to write for a general audience which is why I'm attempting to use simple explanations and focus on explanations rather than code.
How do they work
Step 1: prepare a bunch of bits (a seed), and from these bits, create the initial state of the generator
Step 2: modify current state
Step 3: given current state, produce a number from it
Example 1: MINSTD
Step 1: The state is a single 32-bit unsigned integral number variable. We don't know how to create a seed yet, so let's pick a number 23455264 as a seed.
state = 23455264
Step 2: Calculate the new state using the equation
(a*state + c) % m
MINSTD in particular uses a = 48271, c = 0, m = 2147483647
state = (48271 * state) % 2147483647
Step 3: use the new state directly as the output number
output = newstate output = 485166575
Done: this generator provides numbers in range from 0 to 2147483647 (exclusive, so it will generate every non-negative smaller than 2147483647). Want another number? Go through steps 2-3 again.
Example 2: Doom (1993) pseudo-random number generator
Step 1: prepare an array of 256 (hopefully) random numbers. The array is not part of the current state, as it is not modified during step 2.

Also prepare an integral number variable. This is the state of the generator.

Step 3: use the state to index the array.
output = rndtable[state] output = 8
Done: this generator provides numbers in range from 0 to 255 (inclusive)
Tricks and Traps
Generating a number from range 0 to N*N (exclusive) when your generator only provides numbers from range 0 to N (exclusive)
Generate two numbers using your generator
high = gen() # let's say N = 10 low = gen()
Multiply one of the numbers by N and add the second number
x = high * N + low
Because "N" (10) is bigger than any possible value of "low" (0, 1, 2, ..., 9), no two different generations of "high" and "low" will result in same "x". The lowest possible value of x is 0 for high = 0 and low = 0, and highest is 99 for high = 9 and low = 9.
Generating a number from range 0 to H (exclusive) using a generator that provides numbers from range 0 to N (exclusive), and H is less than N
Let's say N = 10 and H = 4.
Step 1: find the biggest possible integral number divisible by H which is smaller than N. Let's call that number S.
Here S = 8 as 2*H = 8, but 3*H = 12, which is already bigger than 10.
Step 2: generate a number. If the number is not smaller than S, throw it away and generate another one until the generator will get you a number smaller than S
while True: x = gen() if x < S: break
Step 3: Put the generated number into one of H buckets by using the modulo operation. Let this will be the resulting number.

As you can see, if we were to not apply the step 2, before doing step 3, values 0 and 1 would be 50% more likely to be generated than values 2 and 3. Good thing we discarded 8s and 9s before doing that.
Pseudorandomness
We're calling these numbers pseudorandom because we used a fairly simple step-by-step procedure to generate them, but also it is fairly difficult to say what would true randomness be.

We will never know if the devil creature will say something else than nine.
The two examples listed above were very simple pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs), but we have PRNGs which are good enough to generate numbers which must be unpredictable enough to secure your connection to your online bank. We call these cryptographically secure pseudo-random number generators. Explaining on how to use them will come in another post.
Picking a seed
We deliberately avoided explaining how to pick a seed for step 1 in both of these examples. Doom (1993) always picks 0 at the start of the level, but we have to keep in mind that using the same seed will result in the same sequence, which is why if we want to have different sequences, we will have to pick different seeds.
Two most common ways are using the current time, which is extremely predictable (everyone knows the current time), but good enough for quite a lot of programs. The alternative is using a better generator to seed our generator.
Picking a specific seed
The flip side of the fact that using the same seed results in the same sequence is that we can deliberately pick a seed to create the same sequence every time.
If you have ever played Minecraft or Factorio and saved a specific world seed to share with your friends, you know what I'm talking about.
Because Doom (1993) always uses the same seed and also has two separate generator states, one specifically for game logic and other for everything else, it can record your playthrough by recording your inputs and then replay it by simulating a player that rather than taking inputs from your keyboard or mouse, it takes input from the replay file.

This was a year of a ton of new amazing games, and even though I tried dozens, I missed many new awesome games this year, which will always be part of the fun of gaming.
I tried IGN's Playlist app, which buckets your list of games into different categories that sound helpful - Playing, Beat, Quit, Paused, Wishlist, Backlog.
Because I wanted a lot of games marked as "Beat" - I felt encouraged to play some of those shorter, faster plays - many of the games this year were on How Long To Beat dotcom under 10 hours and came highly recommended
One attitude for me this year was "well, I'm not having fun playing this game in the moment, but let's power through since i'm almost done." - This attitude really helped with the motivation to finish to be honest - getting it done meant it's off the backlog and I can move on to the next set of games in my very curated backlog.
Another theme in the games this year was nostalgia and exploring my childhood, so we had good representation of Pokemon and first-party Nintendo
Besides these games, I tried quite a number of games on Switch, PS5, Xbox Series S, and PC for at least a little session - if I don't hit credits it didn't make it on the list, although don't hold me to that
For ongoing games, I played many hours of Gran Turismo 7, some hours of Valorant (140 hours less than 2022 which was definitely lower than 2021...), and the occasional Overwatch/Fortnite/whatever session with people getting together. 2023 was not the same as 2020's peak of playing with friends on a daily basis, but this year I embraced curating things to my taste
I loved the three games I played with my fiance - Paper Mario, Hi-Fi Rush, and Sackboy. Anytime we share an experience it makes the payoff multiple times better.
God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla -
Fuck - I really wanted to beat this one, so it was satisfying to get this one ticked off my list. They wanted to design something hard and worth the challenge and time investment, and I think they did it. I consistently was making progress until the last thing was to beat the final boss, and once I watched a youtube video and tried a different strategy, it opened up. Experience was cool - God of War has a great set of combat features, one of the very best combat systems outside of the god-tier Dark Souls team.
Pokemon Black 2 -
Buying an Analogue Pocket triggered this exploration into my childhood, and part of that was getting into collecting the Pokemon games I missed and revisiting them. I found a copy of this game slightly discounted from it's $160 avg price on eBay and was worried about getting a fake but was relieved it was authentic. So how was this game, not just as a hype item but as an experience?
It was worth the effort. It had a ton of cool pokemon (although needed more water pokemon in my opinion) and it actually was tough to beat - I ended up losing once or twice and had some dicey gym battles earlier on, but I thought the game was an interesting chapter in the pokemon games. It was very story focused and wanted to build some lore and some characters, not just create a million new cool pokemon. Gen V was a big blin spot for me so it was cool to spend some time back in these games after beating Pokemon Black for the second time in the past few years in the pandemic era.
Rollerdrome -
I found the game very tough near the last three levels (it was just overtuned for a casual guy like me and got crazy) but I found it very unique and aesthetically very iconic. These devs took some of the muscle memory from Tony Hawk games and added that famous "bullet time" mechanic as another way to pace everything. It's a great combo - I can even imagine a game where the shooting has to go with the beat. I am happy they had assists so I could avoid hitting my head against the wall for 20 hours.
Super Mario Wonder -
Another GOTY quality game, in a year where we had a new Mario and Zelda come out in a sea of sequels and really well-done indies. I'm not done with this game yet. I hit credits, but there is more to play here in the future. This game is exactly my vibe - and we got to see the demo in person in Seattle which was fun!
Jusant -
Short and sweet with very fun unique climbing gameplay that I enjoyed playing through. It was straightforward and interesting, and I enjoyed that quality many Indies have where it had a huge imagination that transcends their budget and tech restrictions. I felt like that team did a great job and I kept thinking I want to see more games like Jusant, taking the concepts further.
Pokemon Crystal Version -
I was in the mood for classic pokemon with tons of moments of nostalgia and feeling memories from back during childhood - and Pokemon always delivers, I need Pokemon games in my life. I was proud to finish the game after transferring the file to a new 2DS XL and regretting my choice of Totodile as my starter 30 hours in. I had fun and this game is timeless - I will play it again and it will feel like the first time I played it again because that's what these games do. They always feel new because in the world of Pokemon, there is always more to learn.
Spider-Man 2 -
Consistently fun and with very rewarding platinum trophy that wasn't that hard to finish - I found the experience of playing this game rewarding, familiar and very polished, and the game did not overstay it's welcome with bad gameplay. Not too different from the first games besides some very cool new features and types of scenarios with the same core gameplay as Miles Morales and Spider-Man 1.
Forza Motorsport -
In a head-to-head comparison between this and GT7, GT7 has greater replay-ability and tricks the mind into feeling like you're in a simulation. But Motorsport is maybe the better designed game - since it took some driver activities and made them gaming features. But in execution, they don't make a material impact on the experience and don't add much immersion since the driver levels have no impact on gameplay. I enjoyed the larger assortment of cars and the tons of races to play - but I didn't see the same love in the courses, which are really the core gameplay "levels." So I feel like I'm saying that this very expensive and detailed gameplay was lacking levels, which seems like a weird place to be for a game. So lots of complex feelings after playing for over 40-50 hours - I definitely will play this again.
Super Mario World (GBA) -
Someone set me up with GBA online and this was the first game I played - very cool experience playing through my first game in one or two sittings on a big screen with my adult brain and skills without my child limitations.
The Last of Us Part 1 -
In the first few weeks of October, I was having a great time revisiting a game that I played a few years before the pandemic (may have just been 2018/2019....) and also was watching the HBO show at the same time. It still is an awesome experience and still touches those same great heights because the game has that iconic aggression and unique feeling that you feel from what it asks you to do and what it puts you through. No other game feels Last of Us games, and they're on a different league of their own.
Cocoon -
Weird game. The sound design and the visual aesthetic stuck out as iconic to this game, with the gameplay being just multi-faceted enough to encourage me to try to learn new things - I think there was almost one point where I had to look something up but I sat down and tried my best and was able to move forward. I felt very smart and impressed myself.
Venba -
Awesome game and only one or two sessions long - it told a story and it made me think. I liked how the recipes felt like puzzles which is what cooking feels like!
Lego 2K Drive -
In late September, needed something quick and fun to play before Super Mario Wonder/Forza Motorsport/Spiderman 2 slapped me in the face - this was very rewarding and was very satisfying to look at and play - deep enough that it was fun but still very easy to pick up and play with all the different type of cars. One or two kind of down moments definitely didn't weigh down my opinion of the experience as a whole, although it's nice that it's free for PS Plus people 2 months after I bought it for $70.
Paper Mario: The Origami King -
My fiance beat this before and agreed to watch me play and Sherpa me through the experience. It was pretty awesome, although the base gameplay is a bit of an acquired taste...not too long but still took some time investment to finish all of the worlds and once or twice lose a multi-turn boss fight due to some unfortunate misclicks.
Osu! 2 on DS -
Beating this was a spur of the moment and only took a few sessions, but I wanted to play through the "new" Osu game (although now the series over a decade old) for a long time and finally grabbed it off my brother. Iconic songs and I had a lot of fun - and I think I've gotten better mentally at rhythm games after more experience gaming and playing music in general. I was able to power through and beat it on normal without too much.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits -
Has been on my list for a while. I have no clue how. LOL like it may have been one of those rare PS4 games that got a nice PS5 upgrade in 2021 or maybe there was a good review that I saw. I think the game felt... unfair near the end. I ended up turning the difficulty down near the end and finalizing some of the later levels on my iPhone through remote play. Like I changed it to the story mode difficulty and just played through - not a great sign. It had amazing animation and just absolutely killer graphics, but maybe it was too much like God of War or Horizon Zero Dawn? I didn't come away like I gotta recommend this one to everyone, and looking back I liked that the game was short so I thought let's power through, which was a theme this year. I think I turned the difficulty down when I played on my phone just to give myself a better chance of pounding through the levels. Very beautiful though
Pikmin 4 -
dawg - my first Pikmin game. Absolutely fire, I enjoyed trying something new and I didn't find it frustrating or limiting at all, and I think I would play more of the post-game with the new planets and fill everything out in the future.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom -
Iconic and honestly this is the type of game that is on a different plane. Worth the 80-100 hours I put in to my first playthrough - an experience for the type of person that plays video games in the action adventure category, but it's good enough that it transcends genre and expectations. The game was as big as my imagination and I had some iconic moments in the game, like sequence skipping and also enjoying and exploring areas slowly and intentionally. It's worth playing again now that I think about it - just to do the depths again now with the experience of doing it the first time.
Pokemon X -
Set in a Pokemonized France and I played most of this game during breaks in my awesome French vacation this summer. Playing this game has connected me to my childhood, so I had a great time in my 30 hours. This would be worth multiple playthroughs - this was really the first game that I missed in the Pokemon series.
Playing this has been part of my recent 3DS exploration, where I am now trying to play the games I missed during high school and college times, because I was so busy to really play any games, especially not Pokemon. Finishing this game and seeing some of the subtle new changes they did after the Gen V era didn't fully register as these games were refined over decades, but I'm starting to make the connection between the recent games and the games from my childhood.
Pizza Tower -
this game was pure adrenaline. Holy crap. The polygon review got me onto this and I love 2D platformers, but the very unique and original presentation is what got me stuck to it. It was tough at times and also that fun type of creepy with the badly drawn kinda weird characters. I had fun, and I felt that was the game with
Sackboy: A Big Adventure -
Awesome game to finish with the fiance. It was a bit generic, not grounded on a specific character or point of view or set of values besides friendship and light vs. dark. but the multiplayer gameplay was what I was there for, and it delivered. It was a very fun experience playing the game with my partner and I always appreciate games that bring everyone in, not just a specific persona designed by capitalist-fueled marketing machines.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War -
Speaking of capitalist-fueled... I can't remember that many memorable moments but that is the point. the graphics looked amazing and I was happy to play game that didn't take a million hours to roll credits at. Another one that probably was padding for the list. LOL.
Tinykin -
this was another short one, and another one like Gears on Xbox. It was the first Pikim-type game I've played. Very original and once it got going it was fun to go through it. every now and then confusing but it was easy to knock out. I enjoyed the platforming and found it forgiving but not so easy it was boring. It felt tight.
Gears 5: Hivebusters -
Never found the Gears games rewarding enough to finish. Sometimes they felt too convoluted and I didn't feel comfortable. The reason we finished this one - it was short. LOL. it was enough though - felt like a proper experience and I actually enjoyed it. It's just not smooth enough for me to want to play another 60 hours, maybe one ady.
Stray -
a bit buggy, a bit sparse, but I was happy because it was short and sweet. Very creative and had great characters - but I couldn't tell you what their names were. I think it brought a unique experience with the cat features to very well trodden ground and the 3D platforming/exploration gameplay was refined but not as rock solid as the Nintendo types.
Hi-Fi Rush -
playing this game in January 2023 was a cool experience shared with my fiance and the game was incredibly unique and so so so cool. It was pure ecstasy when my girl beat the final boss after losing like 60 times. Hours of pain. When she finally beat it, it felt historic. What an icon!
Pokemon Violet -
yeah performance was ass but playing the new games, they are the best Pokemon games ever by definition. They always raise the bar and it's hard to appreciate until years later.
Metroid Prime Remastered -
I finally beat it like 10-13 years later, this was so action packed and familiar, guides really helped in moments.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury -
Short extra mode was a good time - so it was cool to start with a mario game this year. I remember it being not incredibly difficult but have forgotten some details since January it seems.

11-12:30 academic year programming planning meeting. this is the first of many and I think that instead of defining goals first I might actually want us to brainstorm a bunch of possibilities so we have a ton of stuff on the board. maybe I’ll have us use sticky notes and sharpies, and I might have us spend 10 min freewriting/brainstorming independently before we start working together. once we have a ton of stuff on the board I think we can step back and have a conversation about needs, values, logistics, etc. and then start organizing the post-its into buckets… like, what needs to be an in person event vs. an asynchronous resource, what’s most urgent in terms of time sensitivity + what’s most urgent in terms of student/faculty needs, what is going to move us towards our goal of engaging more first year and first-gen students, etc etc. mmm ok this should be fun.

So Stede knows that Ed, for all his expert handling of himself and his crew, can't call the ocean home the way Stede does. He might still not be human, but that wouldn't be a magic Stede's blood sings with or recognizes.

I'm just minding my business on my lunch break, trying to savor a few moments of solace in the bustling chaos of the office, when x decides to make my midday sandwich a lot less digestible. He strolls up, bold as brass, seeking my profound wisdom on the intricate dance of romance. I mean, really? Do I emit the vibe of a seasoned dating guru?
In front of my entire team, he unveils his quest for love counsel, completely oblivious and unbeknownst to him my questionable dating history – like that time I tolerated a man who thought physical abuse was an acceptable form of communication. Oh, and let's not forget the somnambulant escapade with an ex who had a peculiar fetish. According to him, consent is optional if it aligns with one's peculiar predilections. Not exactly credentials for Cupid's advisory board.
To add a splash of absurdity to this charade, the guy is a whole fifteen years my senior. I'm left pondering what peculiar rites of passage the Gen Xers engage in. Amidst his quest for love, he drops the bomb that he's on a race against time to conquer a checklist of fifty exploits before hitting the half-century mark. At 49, he's got his sights set on the Andes Mountains.
As he rambles on about his bucket list, my mind drifts to more pressing matters – namely, my unfulfilled yearning for an Andes candy bar. You know, the one with those charming mountains on the packaging? A moment of whimsy amidst the absurdity of it all.
Yet, amid the lunacy, a spark of inspiration ignites. I crave my own checklist, one that transcends the mundane. To outlive my father and face the challenges with unwavering courage – now that's a list worth crafting.
