"Let the waters guide you... just as Selene guides them..."
"You've been away long enough... It's time to come home.."
All Y/n wanted out of her dull, mundane life was to find out the truth about herself. Will she succeed in her endeavours or end up diving into something way deeper than anticipated? Only time will tell and perhaps from the reluctant help of a certain scaled individual.
*Forewarning, the appearance of BTS in the story will not occur immediately. Certain aspects of the plot need to be established and built up before the boys can appear. Expect one or multiple interactions with them in later chapters. Sorry and thank you for your patience.

Nocturne of Waves - Part VII
Tumblr media
SeaCreature!Yoongi x Heiress!Reader (f)
Word Count: 2k
Genre: SeaCreature AU, Mermaid AU, Strangers to Lovers, Fluff, Angst because of Jimin’s dramatic ass.
Warnings: Suggestive content!, though nothing too heavy. We all know Yoongi is a curious and very blunt fish man.
Summary: Cuddles quickly turn into panic and then even more panic when you return to the beach house.
Notes: it’s been 84 long long years. ANOTHER present for my lovely @parkdatjimin because honestly she deserves the world! This takes place directly after the last updates, I recommend rereading it ♥️
This is from the Nocturne of Waves series. Find the Masterlist here! 🌊
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Jimin? Minnie? You’re back already?” Standing in the sliding door, you try your best not to freak out at your best friends very disheveled state. He’s laying on the couch, tears streaming down his face, phone clutched tightly in his hand like it’s a lifeline. It’s not very often he allows himself to be seen with tear streaked cheeks.
“I-I met with Tae at the coffee shop and I thought things were going really well but then he said we probably shouldn’t persue anything because of distance and-“ Yoongi slides around you and into the house, eyes wondered as he looks between the two of you. Shrugging, you try to process what exactly he’s talking about because who…?
“Tae…? OH the guy from your internship? Wait, he’s here? I thought he was going to stay in the city…” Jimin let’s out something that sounds like a sob as you ply with your locket, sitting up and sniffling into his poor poor Chanel jacket. Yoongi remains quiet by your side, tentacles slowly slithering around your legs mindlessly. You don’t miss the fondness in his eyes as he watched you caress the locket.
“He decided not to and we’ve been talking since I got here last week and oh my god he’s coming over right now I’m so sorry.” It makes sense, Jimin seemed to be rather infatuated with the guy… And hey, maybe it would be a good thing because his significant others have always been- wait.
“He’s what?!” The blond haired man looks sheepish then, cringing a little as he tries to smile at you with big puppy eyes. You finally shuffle forward, kicking off your sandals and closing the door behind you. So this is it huh? The way you get outed to the fbi?
“He said he’s only a minute out. I’ve been sharing my location with him in case Yoongi eats me and my corpse needs to be recovered. He said that he thinks we’re soulmates and he said we wouldn’t work because he was nervous and I couldn’t say no!” His words come out quicker and quicker as he tried to explain, hands flailing as he stands from the couch and rushes toward you. Min grabs your hands, and of course, you let him because wow he’s a bit of a mess right now. Poor guy.
Turning to Yoongi as Jimin continues to ramble and squeezing your hands to death, you give him a strained smile. He looks back with slitted eyes, clearly not happy with the idea of someone else intruding. If you remember correctly, he almost ate Jimin whole and that one’s still up for debate.
“… Yoongi. My lovely, beautiful mate. We’re going to have to retire to my room, at least for a little while while Jimin and Tae talk, yeah?” Jimin nods his head, tears falling as he does so. Rolling your eyes at his dramatics, you rip your hands out of his and wipe the tears away, cooing and pinching his cheeks on the process.
Your mate grumbles to himself as Jimin pulls away with a squeak, flying back to the couch to grab his phone. Not thinking much of it, you grab a stray tentacle that’s wrapped around your wrist and pet it a few times like a cat. A calm Yoongi is kind of like a cat and that’s the only Yoongi you need right now. Fish cat mate man.
“I don’t even know what to say!? He seemed sure that he didn’t want to try things out and fuck I’m so stressed-“ Yoongi slides forward a little bit before raising his hand into the air. Jimin stops, eyes wide and teary as he stares back at where Yoongi sits by your side.
“I can eat him for you human. Say the word and it will be done.” You slowly crane your head to look at your boyfriend (teehee), processing what he just said. That… Is actually kind of a kind thing for him to offer. It almost makes you shed a tear.
“… Thank you but I think I’ll try talking first.” Yoongi just nods, probably terribly sad that he won’t be getting any human sushi tonight. You can’t say you mind too much however; scrubbing blood out of your furniture wouldn’t be a fun pastime activity.
“I’ll go sit in my room with Yoongi to give you some privacy but like. Realize it won’t be very private Min so please don’t have sex on my couch thanks.” Minnie looks scandalized (which is hilarious) and ready to fight, cheeks puffing out right as lights flash through the blinds. It seems your needy unwanted guest has arrived.
“He’s here! Go, go!” Tugging on the tentacle, you make your way to your room with Yoongi in tow as he snarls. He follows behind not too happily, hopefully not leaving too much water or sand in his wake. It’s fine, you need to deep clean the house anyway.
Not a moment after you close the door, you hear the front door fling open and hopefully not break. Jimin gasps loudly, a deep voice calling out for him desperately. Interesting, you wonder what he’s got himself into this time.
“Jimin, my sweet cherub, I was so wrong.” It’s a little muted but the man is so loud that it sounds like the door is open. You plop on the bed, trying not to giggle as this Tae guy’s words boom through the house. Yoongi slithers up next to you, nudging you to move forward a bit as he climbs into the bed properly.
“My passion for you could never be muddled, even if I tried to do so with every breath. Please accept my apologies.” The giggles don’t stay at bay then, but you keep them soft and Yoongi situated himself behind you, tentacles on either side of your body as you lean back into him a bit.
“Damn, I think he’s being courted by Hamlet.” Your mate doesn’t say anything, bringing his arms up to wrap around your waist. You allow him to pull you back further until your flush against him, his skin a pleasant form of cold in the humid heat.
“This new human wishes to court your human?” It’s whispered directly into your ear, making you shiver a little in response. The comparison is true enough, so you confirm that that’s likely the case.
“I believe so. I’m pretty sure Jimin’s been glued to his phone all this week because of him. We’ll have to have a nice dinner or something to congratulate him.” Maybe you’ll take him out? You could always bring Yoon back some food. It’s likely that he wouldn’t mind some alone time at this point, the house is always full nowadays.
It’s quiet for a while as you try to listen in, their talking now quiet enough where you can’t hear much. Yoongi trails a hand up and down your arm gently, slowly moving until he reaches your hip. He keeps his hand there, flexing it every so often as you breath steadily and try to stay unaffected by his touches.
“Is human courting very different?” Is it? It had to be, or at least it seems to be. His kind of courting seems relatively straightforward and humans, well… If you’ve learned anything throughout your life, it’s that people all have very different outlooks when it comes to love.
“I think… I think It really depends on the human. Some people genuinely wish to find the love of their life, some only want something casual, and some really only care about sex. I wouldn’t say there’s a single way to define it.” Like on the beach, he nuzzled closer into your neck, content to stay there and breath you in. It’s normal now, Yoongi taking any chance he can get to touch you or explore different parts of your body.
“… And you?” His quiet words make you pause, curious if he’ll be unhappy with your answer. Humming a bit, you sink further into his chest, slowly tracing patterns into the skin of his pale arm, quietly admiring some of the iridescent scales there.
“I’ve seen other people before casually, it was never serious though. I haven’t been romantically involved in a long while.. Well, until now. I guess we’re the equivalent to a boyfriend and girlfriend.” There’s no reason to lie, it would be dumb. Yoongi’s quiet for a minute, but the soft purring still continues, and from that alone you know he isn’t very bothered by the confession.
“… I have not ever had a mate before. I would be called your… Boyfriend? Interesting, I would think it would be called boylover or something of the sort. Humans are so odd.” Laughing breathily, you kind of have to agree. It would make sense but humans in general really don’t make any sense. Yoongi leans forward suddenly, esr turned towards the door, lips against your cheek. They brush against your skin as he speaks, and you have to push down the want to turn your head to meet them.
“You mentioned the two of them having sex earlier, and that it is sometimes the only think humans will seek from others.” Nodding your head, you crane yourself slightly so you can look back at him. He doesn’t look troubled at all really, more so curious as his pale eyes stare back into your own.
“The concept is odd to me. My kind do not intimately mate with anyone other than our true mates..” It’s not an odd concept at all, it’s actually something you can get behind. At this point, you can’t even imagine trying to swing casual hookups regularly. Hell, you can’t imagine perusing anyone other than your fish man.
Grabbing a piece of his pretty long hair, you twist it around your fingers, deep in though as you settle back into your spot. So if he’s never had a mate before, and his kind only get intimate with their mates, then… Ah.
“So you’ve never had sex before?” He shakes his head, his hair pulling on your finger. It makes you smile a little, his willingness to share things about himself with you so freely. He slides his hand from your hip to your stomach, stretching his fingers over the naked skin there, his own skin cold and clammy.
“I have not. When mating season comes around I take care of myself. However, I can say with certainty that I would be happy to mate with you and look forward to the occasion.” Mate…? He wants to mate mate. He wants to have sex. Okay, okay yeah that’s something couples do but that brings up the question of how because as you’ve never seen his co-
“The- the occasion?!” It comes out a little choked up and hasty, and you clear your throat to try to correct. He has the audacity to laugh, something that rumbles out of his chest, the tone warm as he slides his face back into the juncture of your shoulder and neck.
“It is usually one of the final steps of the courting process. Once we present all our gifts and become one through mind, we can also become one through our bodies.” It’s an automatic response for your body to heat up, both from embarrassment and… Other things. Your mind runs wild with different pictures, a hand coming up to clutch the locket that sits prettily on your chest.
“That sounds, um, nice. Yes. Very nice. Ahahaha. Ha. So what’s it like under the sea?” Yoongi doesn’t get a chance to reply, an exclamation of joy coming from the front end of the house. Taking a deep breath, you cuddle closer to your man, images of unholy things running through your head as Jimin’s loud laughs ring out in the background.
“Mmh, no need to be nervous my pretty Treasure. Rest now, we will talk more in the morning.”
The Obsidian Pearl (II)
— pairing: mermaid seokjin x (f) reader — word count: 8.1k — warnings: yandere, descriptions of death/blood/violence, explicit sexual content! dub-con touching/oral sex (f. receiving) - the smut is marked with * if you want to skip it — summary: Sailing through The Dead Man’s Passage is a death sentence and the whole crew knows it. But with the ship’s stocks dwindling fast, your captain is left with no other choice. When a haunting melody makes the crew jump ship one by one, you find yourself alone with the demon lurking in the murky red water. As the creature beckons you to jump into the icy ocean – “come to me, pet” – you find that you can’t do anything but obey.
Part 01 - 02
Tumblr media
It's almost night when the siren, Seokjin, visits you again.
Enough time has passed for the air to turn chilly, carrying small gusts of wind that pass right through your clothes. The sunshine that warmed you only hours ago feels like it might never return, not when your surroundings are so terribly dark. You can feel the chill deep in your bones, fear nipping at your skin, clinging to you like frost on a dark winter night.
You're huddled as deep in the cave as you can go, hugging your knees to your chest. You're exhausted, eyes as dry as sand, but you know you can't rest. Call it instinct after being on the sea for so many years – of constantly being trapped on a vessel with people who might turn on you at any second – you tend to develop a hunch of when bad things are going to happen.
You can feel it in your body now, the low buzz that keeps you alert, reminding you that you are not safe no matter how tired you may be.
The reason for it comes only a few minutes later, a terrible scraping sound reverberating through the silence as something heavy is pushed up on the ledge of the stone dock. You free your stiff limbs, wincing as you whip around to face the source of it. It looks to be some sort of chest, the short distance and the faint moonlight not doing much for your vision.
As the item is pushed forward with another forceful shove, your heart jumps to your throat. You've seen this chest before –  the iron insignia on the top is all too familiar to you. It belongs, no, belonged, to your captain. You don't dare to move closer though, not when there's only one creature who could've brought it to you.
Seokjin emerges from the water just seconds later, heaving himself up on the rock. He looks like something out of your worst nightmare, long hair covering his face as he claws his way forward. The shadows make him look all the more terrifying, the dark night blending together with his tail and hair like the perfect camouflage. If it wasn't for his strikingly pale skin, you never would've been able to make him out at all.
He settles back against the same rock as he did before, parting his hair to expose his face. Shivers run down your spine as Seokjin's black eyes find yours through the darkness. They strike just as much fear into you as they did last night, this morning, the emptiness just another reminder of how unearthly he really is.
It was foolish perhaps, but you had found yourself hoping that Seokjin had forgotten about you. That he had come across another ship to terrorize and another human to keep for his little experiments. You wouldn't have minded rotting away in the cave alone if it meant you never had to look upon him again.
The siren clicks his tongue. "I bring you a gift and you dare to look disappointed? This won't do. Come closer, little human."
You don't move, self-preservation rooting you to the ground.
"You humans freeze to death if you get too cold, do you not? Your skin is quite thin, fragile." Seokjin delivers his point by parting his mouth more than necessary, those horrible teeth coming to view behind his plush lips. "Your brain might be too small to remember but the water I dragged you out of was ice cold, pet. The air will only grow colder the longer you wait."
Seokjin doesn't have to use his thrall to make you understand that you have no choice in the matter. If you don't come forward willingly, he'll will either drag you there himself or let the elements do you in. The part of your brain that fears the unknown more than the creature in front of you, urges you to move.
You don't even have it in you to feel humiliated as you crawl forward, terror and cold stiff limbs making it impossible to walk. Seokjin's stare hangs over you like a heavy cloud, slowing you down even further.
He's close, way too close, as you kneel in front of the chest. You would be able to touch his stomach, feel where his skin transforms into scales if you just stretch your arm out.
Seokjin huffs as you linger, the sound making you jump as he impatiently says, "Go on."
You reach for the iron key that's miraculously still in the lock, your busted shoulder aching with pain as you have to twist it with more force than usual. A small stream of water is forced out, running down the side of the chest as you slowly open the lid with shaking hands. You've never held much gratitude for your captain, but for once, you can't be more thankful for his arrogance. He always left the key in the lock and never worried about a greedy crew, because, as he would always say; who in their right mind would dare to steal from a Captain?
You release a shuddering breath as you push it open, the iron hinges voicing their displeasure with a long squeak as the contents are revealed to you. The fur-lined coat your captain bought in the East lays on top of an array of shirts and pants, the fabric hardly even damp as you pick it up. You had assumed everything to be drenched, but it seems the carpenter your captain had been boasting about was the real deal after all.
You pull the coat into your lap, warmth immediately swaddling your legs.
A gift, Seokjin had called it, but you doubt the siren is simply that generous.
"How did you get this?" You quietly ask, voice trembling.
You know the stories of how the ships make it out unscathed, of how it's only the crews that go missing. But unless Seokjin can sprout legs, there's no way he was able to grab it on his own. The siren has a tail and a heavy one at that. As unearthly as he is, you doubt he's strong enough to drag himself all the way up the ship and into your captain's quarters. Never mind that he would do all of that for a chest he didn't even know existed.
"I sank the ship," Seokjin sounds like he's rolling his eyes, although you're not too sure he's even capable of doing so. "It took you too long to wake from your slumber and I was bored. I have not explored a wooden vessel in many moons and this chest looked interesting. I was foolishly hoping for treasure, not silly human clothes."
The siren smacks his tail against the water, irritated.
Even though the chances of getting out of here were slim, you were holding out hope that if you only got to the other side of the mountain, you might be able to use the ship to get away. It would be near impossible to do with only one person and not the whole crew it actually needs, but when something as ludicrous as a siren exists, manning one ship by yourself doesn't sound all that far-fetched in comparison.
You release a shuddering breath, blinking away the tears that gather. With that escape route gone, the ship now resting on the bottom of the sea with the remains of your crewmates, you are truly helpless.
Trapped.
You hope the darkness hides the way your face crumples. Lip wobbling, you try to focus on the chest in front of you, not wanting to give into panic with Seokjin so close. You have to save the freakout and the despair for when you're alone. It wouldn't surprise you if the siren can smell your fear.
Leaning forward, you notice what looks like a thick scarf, the material soft enough that it might serve as a decent pillow. You're not sure if Seokjin is planning on leaving the chest or taking it with him, so this might be your only chance at grabbing items you'll need to survive.
Just as your fingers close around the scarf, picking it up, you feel something sharp poke into your cheek.
Your whole body goes rigid at the touch, your muscles locking up as you realize that one of Seokjin's claws is currently digging into your skin. You hold your breath as he slowly trails it down your throat, the sharp nail leaving a sting in its wake. You don't have to touch it to know that it's a deep scratch, blood rushing to the surface to clot the damage.
"Look at me."
You don't. You can't. You don't want to know what will happen when you do.
"Look at me," Seokjin repeats, more force in his voice.
It makes something in the back of your mind tickle.
You clutch the coat in your lap tighter, focusing on the soft fur between your fingers as the siren's voice grows in annoyance.
You're not sure how many times he repeats his command but between one blink and the next, you suddenly find yourself staring right at him. Your mind feels hazy like it's been stuffed with cotton and shaken around, turning everything upside down.
The hard set of Seokjin's mouth disappears as you finally meet his gaze. The siren hums under his breath as he moves his hand to your face, cupping your jaw. It's like being a spectator in your own body, your eyes refusing to waver no matter how much you want them to. You can feel the ghost of his claws on your skin, not quite digging in but present enough that you know it's a threat. That he can mess you up beyond repair if he feels like it.
Seokjin leans in, watching you curiously as your throat bobs, lips struggling to part.
Your tongue feels like lead, awkward and too heavy, but you use all of your willpower to open your mouth, slurring as you ask, "What did you do?"
Seokjin breaks into a grin, a forked tongue peeking out to lick his terrible teeth. You can feel his breath wash over your face as he speaks, the stench of decay and death making your stomach roll. "You're quite the strong one, pet, I'm glad I brought you here. I think you'll prove to be very entertaining."
The siren gives you one last look, his cold fingers leaving your face as he leans back. You feel some of the thrall leave you as Seokjin turns and slowly sinks back down into the dark water, the small distance making it a little easier to think. You still can't look away from him, eyes tracking his movements even as he submerges himself completely under the surface. He's only gone for a moment before he returns, one of his pale hands coming into view above the water just before something wet splatters at your feet.
"Eat."
Seokjin doesn't wait for an answer. The thrall snaps the moment he's gone, his strong fin carrying him away in seconds.
You gasp, hand shooting up to feel your throat. The scratch he left behind aches and your head is beginning to throb from whatever he did to it. You tear your eyes away from the lake, glancing down at the thing that Seokjin left you with.
The moment you manage to make out what it is, you flinch back, jerking your body away from the mangled fish at your feet. The blood pooling beneath it has already soaked the hem of your trousers, staining it dark.
The sight disgusts you but you can't ignore the hunger gnawing at your stomach. The water in the lake felt fresh enough to drink, but it's been almost two days without any food and you're starving.
There's not a bone in your body that trusts Seokjin but you can't turn away a free meal. You have no guarantee that he'll bring you something again and you'll have no chance of escaping if you're too weak to move.
You poke at the fish, shuddering as its half-torn body twitches.
If only you still had your knife. At least then one of you could be shown some mercy.
Tumblr media
You wake with a gasp, chest heaving with panicked breaths as the fog lifts. It's like someone snaps their finger right next to your ear, violently jerking you out of a slumber you weren't even aware you had fallen into. Your awareness always comes back to your first, keeping your mind awake and trapped while the rest of your body slowly shakes off the thrall you've been under.
You're near the edge of the dock again, kneeling in front of Seokjin. The siren has his head tucked against your neck, his long tongue dragging over your skin, licking off the sweat that rolls down your throat. Every part of you feels sticky and damp, the top of your head burning from the blazing sun. You have no way of knowing how long you've been sitting here but judging by the way your brain is practically mush from the prolonged exposure, it must've been a while.
You shudder at the next flick of his tongue, nausea swirling in your stomach. The days have been passing much in the same manner, every new turn of the moon leading you closer and closer to Seokjin. This isn't the first time you've felt his cold skin against yours, you've woken up to your hands and face being touched many times, but it's never been this intimate before. Never this dangerous, with his sharp teeth so close to your delicate skin.
Seokjin pauses, his tongue pulling away from your skin as he muses, "That lasted shorter than expected, little human."
There's no emotion in the siren's voice, nothing that gives you an indication of whether he's happy or angry. He's simply just... observing. Treating you like the experiment he's decided you are. The siren seems fascinated with your ability to somewhat resist his thrall and he has made it his mission to test out how well your resilience works. That seems to be the only reason he's keeping you here.
You can't quite tell how long he's been at it, though. Time feels wonky when you don't know how much of it has passed. The only thing you can be certain of is that it's already been well over a week, maybe even two since Seokjin trapped you here.
"Please stop," You whimper, voice shaking as you feel his hot breath against your throat, teeth skimming lightly over your skin.
To your surprise, Seokjin listens. The siren pulls back, the corner of his lip curled into a displeased snarl. He looks nothing short of irked that his fun was cut short, a series of clicking noises gurgling in his throat as he gives your shoulder a shove, breaking the last of his thrall.
You scramble backward the second your limbs feel like they're once again attached to your body, dragging yourself into the safety and shade of the cave. Nothing is stopping Seokjin from following after you, he's strong enough to pull himself into your makeshift shelter, but he seems content to stay on the edge of the stone dock - always resting against the same flat rock.
You sprawl out on the ground, panting from the heat. The cool stone seeps slowly through your clothes, bringing your temperature down to something that feels less like you're boiling alive in your own skin. But even as the heat begins to recede, you still feel terrible. The thrall always leaves you nauseous and the shock of snapping out of it in such close proximity to a dangerous predator doesn't exactly help. You're constantly on edge, heart locked in such a rapid beat that you're worried it's shaving years off your life.
Biting back a groan, you sit up, using your captain's chest for support. It wasn't easy moving it into the cave, not with a shoulder that ached with every push. The fear that Seokjin might take it back if you left it was the only thing that kept you going, the clothes inside were far too precious for you to take that risk.
The siren hasn't mentioned the chest since the night he left it but it's impossible to tell if your actions bothered him. He's too good at masking his emotions, his face a blank canvas. Some nights, you do admit that you wonder if he even has them – if he can feel the same things that you do.
You're not quite sure which answer scares you the most.
One thing you do know though, is that you need to learn more about him. You're not one to be a sitting duck and this is driving you insane. Seokjin must have some weakness, something you can use against him or that might aid you in your escape. Perhaps he hibernates in the colder months or he needs to swim for a set amount of hours for his body to function. You refuse to believe he's invincible.
"So," You swallow thickly as Seokjin turns his lifeless eyes to you, "You mentioned that you have brothers?"
Your voice is barely audible enough to carry over to Seokjin but it sounds much too loud within the walls of the cave. You ball your hands in your lap, hoping your expression doesn't show just how terrified you are of willingly calling upon his attention.
"Indeed, pet."
"How many do you have?"
The siren raises one hand to the sky, inspecting his sharp claws. "Enough."
He obviously doesn't want to answer that topic – move on.
"Y-you said something about a sea witch. How did you find them?"
"Now why would you want to find a sea witch, little human? Unless you want to get turned into a fish, they are of no use to you."
"Right, o-of course," You exhale, biting back the urge to throw some colourful language his way.
You try a few more, but there are only so many meaningless questions you can ask before you give up, tired of the aloof answers you get in return. It's like he knows exactly what you're trying to do. Considering Seokjin isn't willing to disclose any type of information, even knowledge that is worthless to you, it's pretty clear that you can't bait him into revealing anything useful.
He's too smart.
Seokjin stretches his arms above his head, showing off his lean muscles as his back pops. The crunches sound terribly loud, like he's trying to crack open every vertebra in his spine.
He lets out a satisfied sound, head tipped back to soak up the sun as he says, "Now that I have answered all of your questions, little human, you should give me something in return. Tell me something interesting about yourself, pet, something that you deem worthy of a meal. It is horribly tiresome to fetch your food at the time."
You suppose it was absurd to think that the siren would continue to feed you without demanding something in return. Perhaps he's already starting to tire of his little experiments.
You pick at your nails, the splintered edges uncomfortable and raw.
There's only one story a creature like him will find interesting – one you swore you would never tell anyone that wasn't there to witness it when it happened. But, as twisted as it is, the siren might be the only one who won't judge you.
The faded scar on your throat burns as you swallow, the phantom pain of a knife digging into your skin flaring up as you say, "I killed someone."
Glancing up, you find Seokjin staring straight at you, his dark eyes glittering under the sun. His tail does a small wiggle, fin smacking the water in what you can only assume to be intrigue.
"Tell me more, pet."
"He was sick," Your hand flies to cover your mouth as your lips move without your permission. You didn't even feel the thrall this time, no push or tug to indicate that Seokjin was in your head. There's only a small tickle at the back of your brain, like you need to scratch your scalp.
Seokjin has never used the thrall on you twice in one day before now. It must be that you're already tired from earlier that he can affect you so easily, that he can slither his way back in without you even noticing he's trying.
Seokjin grins, lips stretched into a terrible smile as he says, "Go on."
"W-we had been out on the sea for many months, five full moons, and we still had a few to go before we would reach the nearest port," You say, taking a measured breath.
"One of our cooks starting acting strangely – he was suddenly anxious and angry, exploding at any minor inconvenience. He started picking fights with the crew, causing too much tension. It was cabin fever, we all had it, but for him, it was worse. It made him sick."
You let your hands fall to your side, fingers uselessly grasping for the knife that isn't there anymore.
"He attacked one of the cabin boys in the kitchen, sliced two of his fingers clean off as he delivered him a freshly caught fish. He followed the poor lad up on deck when he ran, waving his knife around and screaming at anyone that tried to calm him down. The sea... she can be brutal, too big. Staring at the same unchanging horizon every day had chipped away at his sanity, left him with nothing but fear and anger at being trapped by the same water day in and day out."
Seokjin says nothing, his black eyes staring you down as he waits for you to continue.
"He tackled me to the ground before I even knew what was going on. When I looked him in the eyes, I knew he wasn't there anymore. There was no recognition, no emotion. Just survival. He managed to give me this while I was trying to fight him off," You lightly touch the scar on your neck, tracing it from the bottom of your jaw down to your collarbone.
"The others couldn't pull him away either, he was like a beast. I am, was, vice-captain of the ship. It was my duty to protect my crew. I couldn't let him hurt anyone else," Your voice falters as you stare at the monster in front of you, at the creature you couldn't protect your crew from. The cook was a weak mouse in comparison.
"So, I... I killed him. He wouldn't have made it even if we had locked him up, he was simply too far gone. It was more merciful to let him die."
The siren is silent for a beat, his eyes roaming over your face before he tips his head forward and laughs. At least, that's what you think he does, the series of weird clicking noises that gurgle in his throat sounding oddly joyful despite how grating the sound is.
"You truly are fascinating, pet. I made a good choice letting you live."
The hand by your hip clenches, your heart beating painfully in your chest. You wish you still had your knife, that you had something you could drive into Seokjin's throat to hear him choke on his last breaths. You weren't expecting sympathy, but you also didn't think he would find your story entertaining – funny, even. He truly is terrible.
You say nothing in return, your anger making it hard to think; to feel anything but the hatred stirring in your heart.
Seokjin, seemingly pleased with what he heard and not at all bothered by your silence, does what he always does and leaves the moment he gets what he wants.
You stare at the empty spot he left, the wet imprint of his long body the only thing left behind.
You're not sure how long you sit there, caught up in old memories and emotions you've tried to ignore for so long, but the sun has started its descent by the time the siren makes his presence known again.
This time, you watch as Seokjin leaves you not one, but five fish, all half mangled and twitching as the life drains out of them. He flings a few pieces of driftwood up on the dock, staring at your curled-up form for a minute before he swims away.
It's only when your stomach starts to rumble that you force yourself to rise to your feet, walking slowly over to the haul the siren brought you. The wood is wet and soggy, but a few days out in the sun should hopefully dry it enough that it might be used to start a fire.
You let out a humorless chuckle as you drag your hands across your face. You truly are little more than a mutt, waiting for your master to reward you when you do something he finds amusing. How embarrassing. How weak.
No matter how rabid you feel, you know that biting the hand that feeds you will do you no good here. If you want to survive, to live, perhaps it's time to roll over and accept your fate.
Tumblr media
You're not sure if you're getting better at resisting the thrall or if Seokjin just isn't bothering to use it at full force anymore, but you no longer blackout when he comes to visit you. It feels like you're in a dream, vision spotty as you watch yourself move forward on unsteady feet, falling right into Seokjin's waiting arms. The siren holds you close to his chest, arms squeezing you so hard the pain registers even through the haze.
Weeks have passed since the day you told Seokjin your story, since you slowly began to surrender to your situation. The siren still follows the same routine but he seems to have sensed your compliance – your defeat. Your mind is still blocked off, barred from taking control of your body, but now you're able to feel everything that was only a dull memory before. Perhaps the darkness, the blissful ignorance, was a small mercy compared to this.
Seokjin lets out a guttural sound as he pushes his face into your neck, his sharp claws slicing through your shirt. His tongue drags over your skin with a desperation you haven't felt before, teeth nicking your skin.
As terrible as it is, you've grown used to Seokjin's touches, his presence. On lonely nights, you find that you almost wish to see him, just so that you don't have to face the darkness all alone.
You have come to know what to expect from Seokjin but this is new, dangerous, a far cry from the stoic and in-control creature you've been around for the past months.
The siren's hold on you is crushing, your bones aching under the strong pressure. He skims his nose along your skin, huffing as he breathes in your scent. There's a pause, a stretch of heavy silence, and then blinding pain as sharp teeth sink into your already injured shoulder.
Your vision whites out, ears ringing as the thrall suddenly snaps and everything comes rushing in at once. Your shoulder is spasming, muscles jerking with agony as Seokjin digs his teeth in deeper, an animalistic sound tearing from his throat as he draws blood.
It hurts. Gods, it hurts.
A wounded scream rips from your throat as you attempt to claw at his face, desperate to get his teeth out of your shoulder. Seokjin growls as you deliver a deep scratch on his cheek, pulling back just a smidge to create the sound. Seeing an opening, you tangle your hand in his long hair, jerking it back with all your might. You're lucky Seokjin doesn't tear a chunk of your shoulder out as his head snaps back, surprise making his tight grip around you lessen. It's just enough for you to fight your way out of his embrace, body shaking with fear and adrenaline as you roll onto the stone.
Grabbing your shoulder, you try to scoot backward on the slick ground, your own blood making it hard to get enough friction.
Your legs falter as Seokjin turns in your direction, the siren looking like he crawled right out of hell. His expression is crazed, hungry, blood dripping from his unhinged jaw. You can see straight down his throat from how open his mouth is, his stained teeth and black eyes creating the perfect picture of a demon.
Seokjin hisses as you attempt to move, a horrible sound that makes every strand of hair on your body stand straight. He digs his claws into the rock in front of him, using his strong arms to drag himself forward.
"Come here, pet," Seokjin gurgles, his voice hardly even human.
"No no, please don't," You whimper, a newfound urgency propelling you back.
Something in the siren's expression flickers at your broken pleading, like he can't decide if his hunger or entertainment is more important. The confusion, the small sliver of hope it gives you, only lasts for a few seconds before he shakes himself out of it, Seokjin's clawed hand reaching out for your ankle.
Just as he's about to wrap his hand around your foot, your feeble kicks doing little to deter him, you both hear the distant sound of people.
It must be another crew daring to brave the mountains, their rambunctious singing and laughter so terribly out of place. They're either obvious to the stories haunting the pass or trying to compensate for the oppressive silence they no doubt felt the moment the ship entered it. Your heart flutters with longing at the sound of humans singing and laughing, your chest constricting with a yearning you thought died weeks ago. They sound happy and lively – everything the siren is not.
You watch as the same realization hits Seokjin, as he registers the sound of food entering his territory. The siren's jaw pops back to normal as he licks his lips, his empty eyes flickering up to the darkening sun as he says, "The ocean appears to be smiling kindly on you tonight, little human."
Frozen to the spot, you feel your heart drop to your stomach as the siren twists around and dives back into the water with an urgency you haven't seen from him before.
The moment he's out of sight you let out an ugly sob, hope draining out of you alongside the blood that runs down your arm. You tear at the sliced fabric that's barely holding on to your body, wrapping it around your wound with shaking fingers. It's a poor excuse for a bandage, the material soaked through in seconds, but you still tighten it as much as you can, hoping it'll be enough to stop the bleeding. Only left with your undershirt, you can feel the shivers begin to set in, your adrenaline crashing.
You had given up hope on being rescued a long time ago but to have it this close, just on the other side of the mountain, is torture. You can't even alert the unsuspecting crew of what's coming, of the deadly creature that's lurking below their ship.
Scream, scare them off.
Just as the futile thought strikes you, you hear it – him. The gentle hums that cause a hush to fall over the ship.
You cover your ears, not wanting to hear what comes next. You don't know if Seokjin's thrall can still affect you here but you'd rather not take the chance and risk waking up at the bottom of the lake. Closing your eyes, you try to pretend that none of this is real, that all of this is just a terrible, terrible dream.
You let out a weak sob as the first scream pierces the air. Their terrified yells echo between the mountains as they're forced to jump one by one, their final moments brutal and panicked. There's no gentleness in Seokjin's song this time, only urgency as he compels them to their deaths.
He was starving.
For some unfathomable reason, the siren must have been starving himself to the point of breaking, trying to withhold from killing you. It all adds up to why he was acting so out of character over the past few days, his behavior more erratic than normal. He had been trying to fight off the urge to eat you.
If the ship hadn't arrived when it did, if it had only been one second too late, you would've been dead by now.
You curl up into a small ball, body cold and numb to the pain as your shield your ears, wrapping your arms securely around your head. "Thank you," You whisper to the faint moon, guilt twisting your stomach into knots.
Tears drip down your face as the screams continue to reverberate into the night, choked apologies passing through your lips until you feel them going slack. You don't fight the darkness that pulls you under, your soul begging for rest, for a place the screams of Seokjin's massacre can't reach you.
Tumblr media
You jolt as a cold hand wraps around your shin.
Eyes flying open, you manage to push yourself up on your elbows before your shoulder gives out, the movement sending a sharp pain all the way down to your fingers. You grit your teeth, breathing through your nose to steady yourself as you glance up at Seokjin.
The siren wraps his hand tighter around your leg, using it for leverage as he drags himself up on the rock. You were close to the mouth of the cave when you passed out but now you're almost at the edge of the dock, feet only a few steps away from the still water below. Seokjin's thrall must've been too strong, urging you to come closer even when you were unconscious.
Perhaps you have truly lost your mind or maybe the night is playing tricks on you, but for once, there's actual emotion on Seokjin's face. The siren grins, his black eyes ablaze with something as he pushes forward. He tugs your legs apart, fitting his body between them. His hands rest on either side of your ribcage, his face so close that you can practically taste the stench of death that washes over your lips with every breath. The water cascading from his skin makes you shiver as it hits your own, the droplets soaking through your undershirt in seconds.
"Pet," Seokjin purrs, inching his face closer.
You hold your breath, limbs frozen with fear, as the small distance between you disappears.
You can only watch and you're horrified to find that the first thought that strikes you is how mesmerizing the siren looks. The moon shines brightly behind him, giving the scales climbing up his stomach and the small patches on his arms an iridescent shine. It's no wonder sirens have been described as beautiful creatures, not with how Seokjin's pale skin is illuminated, practically glowing, under the night sky.
You see his head tilt down, his dark eyes roaming over your bandaged shoulder. The wound only seems to ache more under the pressure of his gaze.
"Good work, little human," Seokjin comments, pleased, "You patched yourself up just to stay with me longer. I am not cruel, I will reward you for this."
What a good dog you are, licking your wounds for your master just so that he can tear them open again.
Your legs twitch on each side of Seokjin's body, resisting the urge to kick at his tail. Angering him will do you no good and you're ashamed to admit that the spark of excitement in his features leaves you curious – makes you want to know just what a siren considers a reward.
Seokjin ducks his head lower, pressing his nose right against your throat. The sharp bite you're expecting never comes – instead, there's only the soft press of his lips roaming over your skin, hurried kisses scattered across your neck. He lowers himself to get more access, nudging your head back as he settles more of his weight on your body. It leaves your hips completely immobile, your arms trembling with the effort it takes to keep yourself raised off the ground.
You hold your breath, scared to move as much as a muscle.
The siren's tongue flicks out to taste your skin with every kiss, leaving a trail of saliva covering your neck. The cold air only heightens the contrast between his warm lips and the slick skin he leaves behind. You're caught off guard when he suddenly attaches his lips to the underside of your jaw and sucks, pulling the sensitive skin there between his lips.
You let out a startled gasp at the sensation, small shudders traveling down your spine as your reaction only seems to spur Seokjin on, the siren quickly finding more spots to mark up.
Your whimper, surprised, as he uses a claw to slice through the bottom of your undershirt, exposing your waist and stomach. His cold hand finds the exposed area immediately, rubbing and squeezing at your skin as he drags his hand up and down your waist. He somehow manages to keep his claws off your skin, only digging them in faintly whenever you grow too quiet. He seems to enjoy the involuntary sounds you make, his actions only growing more and more frenzied as he tries to pull more of them from you.
"Touch me," Seokjin growls against your throat, his voice half strangled as he pushes you down to lie flat on the ground.
Mindful of your aching shoulder, you raise a tentative, shaking hand up towards his arm, grasping his toned bicep. You can feel the power thrumming under his skin, how strong he is from that simple touch alone.
Seokjin is quiet as you slowly glide your fingers up his arm and over his shoulder, feeling how the texture keeps switching between soft skin and hard scales whenever you encounter a small gathering of them. It's a curious feeling, one your brain struggles to fully comprehend.
You continue your touch down his back, careful to steer clear of the fin that protrudes along his spine. He lets out a harsh breath, low clicks gurgling in his throat as you let your hand fall away, not daring to go further than his waist.
You glance up as he pulls back, breath stuttering in your chest as you take in how wild he looks. Seokjin's expression is hungry, but it's nothing like the empty, ravenous stare you saw before he tried to take a chunk out of your shoulder. No, this one is pure desire – lust.
Your stomach flips with disgust as you realize that the hunt, that killing that innocent crew, actually turned him on.
Seokjin pushes himself back, emerging his lower body in the lake before he wraps his arms around your knees and pulls. You slide across the rock, thighs meeting Seokjin's torso as your legs fall over the edge of the dock, the water hitting just above your ankles.
You cry out from the harsh yank, pain flaring up in your shoulder as the still-open wounds are dragged across the uneven surface. The bandage does little to lessen the burn of it, your vision growing spotty as you struggle to breathe.
"You humans are so weak," Seokjin scoffs, his voice swimming in your ears. *
The siren tugs at your trousers, annoyed at how the fabric doesn't budge. He uses his claws, meeting no resistance as he slices right through them the moment it takes a little too long to get them off.
You jerk as Seokjin settles his hands on your exposed thighs, mapping out your skin.
Your vision begins to clear as you get your breathing under control, heat creeping up the back of your neck as you register just what the siren is looking at. Seokjin's torso is blocking you from closing your legs, exposing everything to him.
His dark eyes never waver from your cunt, in fact, you're not so sure he even blinks as he watches you squirm.
"Be still, pet," Seokjin says, the points of his claws pricking into your delicate flesh to get his warning across. He squeezes your thighs, his forked tongue swiping across his lips, "I was right. Your thighs do look delectable."
Horrified, you feel your hole pulse with arousal at Seokjin's words, wetness slicking up your folds.
The siren makes a curious sound at the sight, one hand drifting closer to your cunt as he lowers his head. You tense up, muscles locked tight, as Seokjin runs his finger over your clit. A choked moan makes it past your lips as he begins to rub at it, eyes bright as he lightly pinches your nub.
Receiving pleasure from the creature that has trapped and hurt you is the last thing that you want, but it's been so long since you've been intimate with someone like this. Your body gives in easier than your mind, eager to feel any touch as long as it'll make you feel good.
It's a reward, just take it. Who knows if you'll ever get to feel like this again.
"You're so wet, little human," Seokjin comments as he drags a finger up and down your folds, spreading your arousal around.
"You can't– no, no claws," You hurriedly say as you feel his knuckle graze your hole, stopping Seokjin in his tracks. "We-we're fragile, remember?"
The siren purses his lips, contemplating the information as he moves his hand back to your thigh. Arms curl under your knees before you can even breathe a sigh of relief, the air being punched right out of you as Seokjin dips his head down to lick a stripe between your folds.
"Oh Gods," You gasp, fingers clawing at the stone below you as the siren's forked tongue flicks over your clit with every pass, making your clenching hole gush with slickness.
You let out a broken moan as Seokjin prods his tongue at your entrance, black eyes flickering up to meet yours just as he pushes it inside.
Seokjin has lowered his body even more into the water, leaving him at the perfect height to feast on your cunt. His tongue worms his way into your hole, the wet muscle reaching deeper than what should be possible. Your veins feel like they're on fire, your body burning up with arousal as Seokjin licks and sucks at your folds, nose bumping against your clit. You can't stop yourself from grinding against his face, hips twitching with the little leeway he gives you.
"Seok-seokjin," Your hand flies down to his head at a particularly harsh suck, his teeth skimming over your delicate heat. The mixture of fear and pleasure leaves you lightheaded, your heart beating erratically in your chest.
The siren growls as your fingers curl into his long hair, the sound vibrating against your skin as you tug at his locks. You can't tell if you're trying to pull him away or press him closer, but either way, Seokjin doesn't listen.
You keen as his movements only seem to grow more frenzied, the siren drunk on your taste as he continues to lap up your slick. His grip around your legs is bruising, locking you in place to let him use you as he pleases. You continue to whimper out his name, your little cries only spurring him on further.
The white-hot pleasure in your stomach only continues to build the longer Seokjin eats you out, the pleasure mounting so quickly you don't know what to do with yourself.
You don't want this but you also do – and those conflicting emotions only intensify every suck and lick from Seokjin.
"Good pet," The siren groans, his warm breath fanning across your folds.
You finally erupt as he attaches his lips to your clit and sucks, your orgasm ripping through you so violently you almost feel like you're going to pass out. Your back bows off the ground as you let out a loud moan, your knuckles white from the tight grip you have on Seokjin's hair. You ride out the waves of pleasure that seem to hit you over and over, the siren lapping up your essence like a starving man – like he's never tasted anything as good before.
Your legs are trembling with oversensitivity once you come back to yourself, your cunt clenching helplessly around Seokjin's tongue as he keeps trying to lick up more of your slick. You hastily remove your fingers from his hair, weakly pushing at his head to make him back away.
"Stop, it's too much," You whimper.
Seokjin makes a displeased sound in the back of his throat, tongue dragging through your folds one last time before he pulls back. There's something in the siren's gaze that looks even more predatory than it's ever done before, his plush lips slick with your wetness. *
"You did well, little human. It was about time you gave yourself to me," Seokjin says as he brings his hands to your hips, the corner of his mouth quirked.
"What do you mean?" You say, voice faltering, "You told me to touch you, you made me touch you – made me enjoy this."
The siren tsks, shaking his head as he pushes you down on the stone dock, fingers gliding over your stomach. "Did you feel me using my thrall, little human? You touched me because you wanted to, you gave in because you wanted to feel good. This was all you, pet."
"No, that's not..." You trail off, biting the inside of your cheek. You didn't feel the ticklish sensation that usually comes with Seokjin's thrall when he asked you to touch him. You don't feel sick now, not like you always do whenever you snap out of it.
You... You did all of this on your own volition.
Seokjin sees as the realization dawns on your face, the blooming devastation making his fin hit the surface with excitement.
"That's right," He murmurs silkily, "Accept the fate that the sea has bestowed on you, pet. You were made to be my little plaything."
You feel Seokjin move away as you stare mindlessly up at the twinkling stars. You pull your aching legs together the moment he's gone, bringing them up to your chest. Without the siren's body shielding you from the frigid night air, you just feel cold. So awfully cold.
Just accept your fate.
You hear the water move as the siren ducks under the surface. The lake ripples as he swims, only a few flaps of his tail bringing him up on the side of the dock, where your head has turned. His dark eyes burn holes into your face as he drops something on the stone in front of you, the metal clinking as it bounces off the surface.
Heart stuttering in your chest, you reach out and snatch up your old knife, your shoulder burning as you put pressure on it. Your eyes grow wet as you turn it around in your hand, the familiar weight and polished grain of the wooden handle the closest thing you have to anything that feels like home.
You thought you had lost your knife forever when you jumped off the ship, that it was sacrificed to the sea together with your crew and vessel.
The siren's face is unreadable as you glance up at him, expression flat as always. One thing is for sure though – there's no part of Seokjin that views you as a threat, that's concerned you'll use your knife against him.
It breaks your heart to know that he's right. Even if you kill him, you have no way to get out of here.
Seokjin's pale hand emerges from the water to place something delicately on the edge of the dock. You let out a small gasp as he removes his fingers, the round sphere beautiful as it reflects the stars shining above. It looks to be a massive pearl made out of obsidian, the surface glossy and smooth.
You lay your knife down, meeting Seokjin's burning stare as you bring your trembling fingers forward to pick it up. The pearl is heavy in your palm, your hand barely even managing to close around the size of it.
The moment you pick it up, Seokjin lets out a pleased chitter, his mouth showing off that terrible smile again as he says, "You've proven to be a fascinating pet, I don't think I'll tire of you just yet."
"You're mine now, little human."
The moon has always enamoured you.
The clouds around it add to the picturesque of what you could have painted if artworks can be perfectly stored underwater.
Watching it from above water is unparalleled when you’re observing it from underneath. You bask in the moonlight, occasionally closing your eyes and imagining being able to moon gaze like this every night. That would be impossible including staying here any longer as it is strictly forbidden for you to be out here in the open on land.
It doesn’t matter as long as no one discovers you here—
“omg, a giant fish!”
You whirled right away in the direction of the loud voice, spotting its owner, a man walking sluggishly by the seashore towards you. Panic rushes through you at the prospect of being identified, your mind prompting you to think of possible ways of escape.
The position you are currently, sitting on top of the huge rocks unfortunately doesn’t give you much of an advantage to attack him unless he comes near. And he was slurring words that you’re trying to decipher. He doesn’t appear to have any weapons with him except for that strange transparent object in one hand with gold liquor in it.
You ready your stance the closer he gets, bracing both your clawed hands in front of you. He might use that object or the liquor against you. One of your advantages is the lack of enough light where the scenario would’ve been different had it been during the day. You move your tail behind you so he won’t be able to see it further.
“oh wait, you’re pretty for a fish!” the strange man starts to giggle as a points at you and you’re in confusion.
Did he just compliment you? Aren’t humans supposed to be scared of your kind?
“i’m not a fish” you declare calmly despite the wave of anxiousness bubbling in you. He may be just a human but he could also be acting all innocent, a perfect bait to lure you to his other comrades that may be hiding somewhere.
Waiting to capture you.
Your father warned you of how vicious humans are so you must not trust him even though he seemed harmless. You’ve looked around and a bit of relief washes through you when you found no one on the shore aside from him. Still, you mustn’t lower your guard.
You continue to observe the man as he continues to walk where you’re sitting by the rocks. Only then you can see his face more clearly. He’s pleasing to look at, different from the humans that you’ve seen in fishing boats before. Wearing only a plain white shirt, its top buttons are undone which makes him more dashing than he already is.
The simple loose pants he’s wearing perk your interest as you quite can’t figure out what material it was made of yet.
“i must be drunk holy shit, i’m talking to a fish” he continues to laugh, smiling brightly while looking up to the sky and you’re getting warier of what he is planning.
You’re running out of time and this man is wasting it. You promised the others that you won’t be that long. You wouldn’t want them to come back and find you in a company of a human boy.
He’s right in front of you now, drinking what’s left of the strange object he’s holding before placing it on the dark sand. You’re surprised that he was able to stand up again, wobbly, sure, but it did not affect how he’s acting around you.
Quite the opposite for you the closer he gets.
Your eyes couldn’t help but follow his right arm, adorned with dark markings, some with colour but you couldn’t see the rest of it since he rolled his sleeves up until his elbows.
“how can i be a fish and talk to you like this?”
The man stares at you with furrowed eyebrows, confusion evident on his face.  Only then that you notice his hair, slightly damp curly that almost reaches the base of his neck.
“i can see your tail” he responds with a bit of clarity now, still confused but his curiosity overpowered it. He’s now trying to see behind the rocks, to see more of what the moonlight can show. He looks adorable, tip-toeing to get a glimpse of your tail and you’re tempted to show him just so he can leave you alone.
Fully revealing yourself could scare him or not but you’ll try. It worked with others before along with many threats. If not, then you could kill him though he doesn’t look like he can harm you in this state.
“i could eat you, but i'm full already” you hiss, trying to sound threatening and staring him down with a glare but the man starts laughing hysterically instead.
"i'm supposed to be eating you since you're a fish" he wheezes as he shakes his head, enough for him to lose his balance.
You catch him just in time and you have no idea why you did. You could’ve just let him fall on the rocks in front of you and call your sisters for another feast but you couldn’t find it in you to let it happen.
“damn..strong..fish” he slurred before losing consciousness in your arms. In a strange way, you find yourself smiling at the stranger’s remarks. He might be well-built but he weighs like nothing to you with your inhuman strength.
Up close, his rosy cheeks are glowing and you’re unable to avoid touching them, feeling the warmth coursing through you. Albeit your body’s much colder than humans, it piques your interest that he feels warmer than the others you’ve held before. You can also smell the bitter scent wafting off of him, leading you to think that all this was because of that golden liquor that he consumed.
You eye the glassy object, looking back and forth between him and it on what to do next. But his face distracts you again, noticing the pieces of jewelry on him. A silver necklace is peeking out underneath his shirt and only his right ear has silver bands on them. You’ve also noticed a ring-like silver metal attached to the right corner of his lower lip.
Is this a new way of putting on jewelry?
It seems that you have plenty of things to catch up on and this man might help you with it.
But will he when once wakes up or will he turn out just like the others?
-------------------------------------------
The waves crashed against the shore, the dock swaying to the pulse of the water rocking against the wood. You sat on the dock, pants rolled up as you rested your feet in the water. Your flannel was dark from the dirt you had mucked through. It had been a long day, helping your neighbor sort through his garden.
You lived alone in a small cottage, about a couple yards away from the shore, your favorite place. You had inherited the small home from some uncle you had never met, your name the only one written in his will. You remember laughing at the lawyer, thinking the entire meeting was a joke.
But now, you were thankful.
You had been living in the small coastal town for a couple months now, acquainting yourself with your uncle’s neighbors and friends who had all come by to say their condolences. Your neighbor, in particular, seemed to push the closest. He was an old man who your uncle had grown up with, and he and his wife were always bringing food over to your door, worried for your ever shrinking frame.
You had grown to enjoy their company, but sometimes, like now, you loved the silence that came with being alone.
Before moving here, you had been overwhelmed with life, and the stimulation of living with your large family always made you irritated and wanting to jump out of your skin. Since moving into your uncle’s home, you had rarely felt that way, but when you did, you came down here to the docks. The sound of the ocean always drowned out the sound of your own thoughts.
The shore was rocky, almost to a point, and was the perfect hiding spot for curious mermen and sirens who noticed the humans on the shore. Currently, Jimin was hiding behind one of the larger rocks closer to the shore, still hidden from view. He had been watching you for some time, curious about the human who took over his old friend’s home.
Your uncle had saved him from a hunting accident, had stitched together his tail from the hole the hook had made. Since then, it was a mutually protective friendship. Your uncle made sure no one hunted in his water, and he would make sure that your uncle always had fish for his table.
It had only been a couple of months since he last saw his friend, Jimin remembering the promise he made to watch over his young niece. He didn’t understand until he saw you for the first time, your long pants and sweatshirt covering your body, as if you were hiding from something. You drew him in immediately, your presence like his very own lighthouse, always drawing him in and capturing his attention. He seemed to always know when you were at the shore, like his mind was trained on your soul.
Even now, he could tell you were at the shore, bringing him from the bottom of the ocean, where his cave was located, to the surface. He watched as you silently cried, his heart clenching at the sight of you. He wanted to hold you, comfort you and tell you everything would be okay. He tried to stay hidden, but once your salty tears mixed with the water, he couldn’t stay still any longer.
You were trying to wipe the never-ending flow of tears from your cheeks when someone’s hand held your own, and rubbed their thumb against your cheek. You opened your eyes, staring straight into the deep blue eyes in front of you as they moved to cup your cheek.
You were silent as he wiped your tears, your eyes trying to make sense of what you were seeing. This man was beyond beautiful. His features were sharp but held something akin to magic as he captured your attentions. His torso was completely bare, but his hips, not covered by the water, were covered in a light purple, shimmering skin. The beginning of what looks like scales just peeking through the water.
“Who are you?” The words manage to slip past your lips as he continues to cup your cheeks in his hands, his eyes moving over your features, emotion covering his face in a way you haven’t seen in years. His eyes held a softness you wish you had experiences more, wished you had someone who would look at you with.
He didn’t answer, just moved a hand up to brush the hair out of your face. He brought your face down and placed his lips on the top of your head, stilling for a couple of seconds before pulling away. His hands leaving your skin as he descends back into the water.
The whole thing only took a couple of minutes, but to you, it felt like hours. His touch lingering on your skin as the feeling of his lips on your temple becomes a permanent sensation of warmth. You felt a familiarity in your heart when you were with him. Something you couldn’t explain.
You realized, as you were walking back up the dock and towards your home, that you don’t even remember why you were crying, why you were feeling so down. It was like you heart and soul were warming up. The feelings of inadequacy and loneliness were numbing, but the stranger’s touch was warming, all encompassing.
You turn back around, hoping to catch a glimpse of the beautiful and calming man, but you have no such luck. You open your door and immediately move to make a cozy little nest for you to burrow in, lighting a couple of your favorite candles as you put your favorite movie on. You needed all the comfort you could get right now.
Jimin just watched from his spot behind the large rock, his heart beating at the sight of you all burrowed up in your blankets. He couldn’t help but to wish you were with him, letting him curl around you in comfort as you lay in the seaweed and moss bed he would make for you.
-*-*-
You were slowly losing your mind, you thought.
Every morning, you woke up to seashells and other remnants of the sea on your porch, with no way of knowing where they came from. You wondered if they came from your mystery seaman, but you hadn’t seen him since that day on the dock.
You never did anything with the shells until one day. You had woken up and done your routine, finishing with a check of your porch to see what treasures remained today. But only one shell was there, a large scotch bonnet laid on the wood of your porch, its color unusual, the deep purple and blue catching your attention immediately. It shined under the morning sunlight, causing hues of purple and blue to shine on your clothing as you moved closer.
Moving back inside, you placed the shell on your windowsill in the kitchen above your sink, just overlooking the dock as that is where the best sunlight comes in during the day. You couldn’t help but admire it, hoping it came from the seaman who wiped your tears.
You felt connected to the man, wondering and hoping you could see him again.
Deciding to continue with what you planned to do today, you grabbed a couple of your reusable bags and made your way to the market in town. The market consisted of several vendors, a lot coming from neighboring inland towns to sell their goods. There was a couple of produce stands, and even a baked goods stand that had the most wonderful blueberry scones. Those were your favorite.
Your steps were slow in approach, eyes curious and gazing as you looked over everything you could see. There were a lot more booths and vendors out in the market space today. A jewelry stand caught your eye, the sea opal jewelry catching your eye as you moved forward. A ring made of molded metal, clutching a single oval shaped sea opal in the center was the one that had you entranced. It was beautiful and the trance you were in had you trying it on your ring finger.
It fit perfectly, shocking you but also making you think that it was meant for you. But reality had to set in. Your budget for the month only allowed you very slight leeway and you had already used the extra money on new gardening supplies so you could continue to plant vegetables. That, however, was also why you were at the market. You needed to get some vegetables, and some seeds so you could plant.
Reluctantly, you sat the ring back down on its stand before thanking the stand worker for letting you try it on. You didn’t even notice the tall man who walked up, hood hiding his face as he buys the ring you had just tried on.
Moving down the path you search for the produce stand you had seen last market day, the older woman who ran the stand had been nice and had helped tell you which was best to plant when. You were hoping to talk to her again, gain more useful advice from her about planting.
And that’s exactly what you got; she even walked you home after she closed and packed up her table. She showed you the best places to plant certain vegetables, which soil usually worked best with each, and how much sunlight and water each one needed to grow their best. It was overwhelming, but you were smart to take notes as she spoke.
When the day was gone and night fell, you were ready to pass out. You were happy with what you got accomplished, a relatively new feeling that you haven’t experienced in years. You were getting ready for bed, the twin bed perfect for yourself and one or two of the stuffed animals you bought for comfort. You managed to pass out quickly, not even noticing the shell you had received that morning was no longer in your kitchen, but on your nightstand.
Featherlight touches. Soft lips trailing up your body. A weight on you as you relaxed into the sheets. Your dream was lifelike, the loving touches and breathless praises like music to your mind as you leaned into the touch.
“So beautiful, my love.” Another kiss placed in between your breasts, hands roaming the expanse of your thigh.
“Waited a long time for you, for this.” His lips moved down your stomach, kissing your pubic bone before diving into your pussy, his tongue licking a stripe up your cunt as you tried to close your thighs around his head.  He let you, groaning at the taste and feeling of you and surrounding him.
“My love, it’s like you were made just for me.” His lips close around your clit, your back arching off the bed as your release coats his tongue, more moans and groans leaving his lips as his hands tighten around the top of your thighs.
His words were like music in your dream-like state, a siren in your head, dragging you deeper into the woes of pleasure as he leaves finger shaped bruises on the tops of your thighs.
Everything was hazy, the touch of him euphoric as he never stopped, orgasm after orgasm leaving your body. The feeling of his lips sucking marks into your skin left you breathless as his cock driving into your core left your seeing stars.
“I promise, my love, I will give you a better life. I will take you away from here. You will be happier with me.” His words whispered into your ear didn’t make sense, this was a dream, so why would your dream man say something like that?
You could feel him holding your left hand up, his fingers on yours and then a weight on your ring finger. You looked over and saw him kissing a ring on your finger, eyes locked on yours the entire time.
“I will see you soon, my love.”
Sunlight streaming through the window was your alarm, the warmth on your face a nice welcome to the colder weather you had been experiencing recently. You realized it was light though once you pushed your blankets off of you, the cold air nipping at your skin and making you rush for your sweats and sweater.
Your legs were a little wobbly as you moved, a little struggle on your part as you had to hold onto your dresser to try and find your clothes.. Once dressed in a large t-shirt that had been thrown haphazardly, you moved for your bathroom door only to stop in your tracks as you stared at yourself in the mirror you had hanging from the back of your door.
Your neck was littered in purple and blue bruises, different shades and sizes. As you pulled at the neck of your sweater, you saw the top of a couple more littering your collarbone. Your eyes were wide with shock as you stared at your reflection. You moved your hand back down, only for it to get caught in the light, your mind now noticing the ring you wore on your ring finger. The same exact ring you tried on at the little vendor yesterday.
“What the…” You spoke aloud, something you were known to do. Nothing made sense. It was just a dream. You had now completely forgotten your mission to find warm clothes.
You move to sit back down on your bed, hands slowly moving to the inside of your thighs, a grimace crossing your face as you feel the bruises, shaped like a handprint, on your inner thigh, right where the man held you down in your dream.
You could feel your heartbeat starting to pick up, the feeling in your neck creating a pattern for you to try and breath with. Someone was in your room. Someone did this to you when you thought you were dreaming.
You could vaguely hear someone knocking at your door. Your mind was playing tricks on you, that’s it, you thought. When you thought you gathered your bearings, you moved forward again, pushing past the mirror, not wanting your perceived illusion to be real.
The person at the door had stopped knocking but was instead trying to talk to you through the door.
“My love, I promise everything will be okay. Just let me in so we can talk.” The voice was the same from your dream, their words matching the man who spoke sweet praises in your ear.
You were frozen, your hand holding onto the wall of your small hallway for support. You couldn’t feel your legs nor could you hear anything else through the sound of your heartbeat thundering in your ears. You held your breath, hoping that the man wouldn’t notice you were still home. Hoping he would think you had already left for the morning.
“My love, I know you’re in there. I can smell you.” His voice had a singsong tone to it now, almost condescending or teasing.
You looked around your small home, looking for anything that could be used as a weapon, anything that could be used for protection. You held a hand over your mouth, hoping to stay quiet as you tried to step back into your room, where you knew you could get out through the large window over your bed.
The door knob startled to rattle as your door began to move against the doorjamb. “Please, baby. Don’t be afraid of me.” You could feel a tear slipping down your cheek, a hopefully quiet whimper leaving your lips as you bump into the wall just in front of your bedroom door. The front door opens just as you stand in the doorway to your room, the merman, now with human legs, stood there with a loving look in his eyes.
He looked at you like you hung the stars in the sky.
“Why are you trying to hide? I told you I would come back for you once I had everything ready?” He seemed genuinely curious, concern lacing his tongue as he moved inside, closing the door behind him.
He moved forward, your body bumping into your dresser and chair before finally landing against the wall as you tried to move away from him. He didn’t stop though, wanting to be as close to you as he could.
“I couldn’t stand to see you so sad that day. My heart hurt for you; my soul ached to be the one to make you smile again.” His words were soft, loving as he brought his hand up to caress your cheek, freezing for a second when he saw you flinch before continuing.
“I chose such soft kelp for our bed, and even wove together some seaweed for a blanket, knowing how much you love to cuddle underneath them.” He moved closer as he spoke, pressing against you and making you wince as you had to change your weight distribution, the ache between your legs becoming worse.
He noticed quickly, his hands moving from your cheeks to your legs, pushing them open as he pulled your underwear down, the large t-shirt being pushed up so he could look at your core. You tried to push him away but he moved to hold both of your hands in one of his own, his strength unparallel to what you would think.
“Shh my love.” He cooed, moving in to place a kiss on your mound, before spreading your folds and placing a kiss directly on your core. His cold lips had you jolting away in shock.
“I’m so sorry I hurt you. But I promise you will get used to it. I will love you every second of every hour.” He raises back up to his feet, something in his eyes changed as he looks down at you once again.
Before you can even scream his lips are on yours, your mind becomes hazy as your eyes begin to blur. He pulls away after a couple seconds, the smile on his face large as your sight gives way to the darkness.
-*-*-
Floating.
That’s the first thing that comes to your head when you open your eyes again. Either that or you were dead. The only light came from an opening in the dark about twenty feet from where you were. You tried to sit up, only to find that you were indeed floating in the water that surrounded you.
Your eyes widened in terror, wondering how the hell you were breathing. How you were even alive was completely unknown to you. You felt an arm wrap around your naked torso, looking down only to see your private areas covered in some sort of woven cloth.
“Good morning, my love.” The voice of the merman spoke from behind you, the arm around your torso tightening as he pulled you closer into him. You tried to hold in your sob, your hand moving to cover your mouth.
“I’m so happy you woke up. I can’t wait to show you around. I think you’ll especially love this little family of seahorses that live around the coral on the side of our cave.”  He held onto you as he swam forward, no tail in sight as he helped you to the entrance. He noticed you looking at his legs, and spoke.
“Oh, don’t worry darling. My tail will come back after our mating period ends and will return after a couple of days. Us merpeople can change at will, only when mating comes into play.”
You really hate evolution.
There were hundreds of merpeople, dozens of caves on the bottom of this…ravine? There were families swimming along the bottom and up the top as the moved from cave to cave. Your heart was caught in your throat as you looked up, the sunlight peering down at you, mocking your exit.
“Isn’t it beautiful? You can’t go out yet, I wouldn’t want someone to snatch up my beautiful mate while in her mating cycle.” His smile reached his eyes making them appear closed as he pressed a quick kiss to your nose.
“Now come on, my love. I can already smell how ready you are again.” The man, you still haven’t learnt his name, moved his hand down to your core as he pulled you back into the darkness of the cave.
As your legs floated in front of you due to the momentum of him pulling you backwards, your legs opened enough for him to push two fingers in, the gasp leaving your lips loud and echoing.
He pulled them out just as quick, bringing them to his lips as he pushed you down on to the soft surface, moving to hover over you.
“You taste delicious baby. I’ve been waiting to taste you again.” He holds your legs open and places them over his shoulders as he moves in again, this time his tongue out to catch the slick dripping out of your core. You hated how turned on you were, the feeling unwanted but almost natural.
You moaned quietly as he licked at your clit, his plump lips doing wonders to your body.
“Please..” You whimper, not even knowing what you were asking for.
“Please what baby? What do you need?” You moan again, his words causing the knot in your stomach to form.
“I—” A moan leaves your lips again, cutting you off. You didn’t even realize your hands were now in his hair, pulling at the strands in pleasure.
“Jimin.”
“What?” You look down at him, the sight of him slurping and sucking at your core leaving you absolutely breathless.
“The name you want to moan out.” He answers with a sly smile on his lips, your slick dripping from his mouth, despite the water you were buried in.
“It’s the name you are going to be screaming out soon, my beautiful mate.”
And he was right, you were screaming out his name as you finally came on his tongue, his fingers rubbing the inside of your walls as he pumped in and out of you. You screamed his name as he thrusted in and out of you, his teeth in the crook of your neck as he came inside of you, his hot cum filling you and making the bulge in your stomach bigger.
Once he finished for the third time inside of you, he let you rest as your eyes closed. Sleep seemed to take over as he caressed your cheeks again, moving down to soothe the mark his teeth made on your neck when the light reflection from behind you caught his eye.
The same shell that started this rested on top of the rock he uses as a side table. The very shell that meant you accepted his courting when you chose it over all the others he brought you. He was so happy when you put it in the window, like a beacon of welcome for him to see. It was you letting him know you were ready for him.
He was so happy that day that he couldn’t wait to show you his love, choosing for the first time to stay on his human legs and watch over you. He bought the ring he saw you wearing, the sea opal calling out to him. He knew then and there it would be the perfect mating ring for you. It was made to fit your finger just as you were made for him.
The darkness consumed you once you passed out from exhaustion, but the light he saw in you would overcome everything, even the darkness of his own soul.
Tumblr media
Tiny pin-points of light dotted my vision as I ever so slowly came to. They stood out against the dark, roughened backdrop above, shrouding the surrounding area in hues of brilliant blues and greens.
Marveling at the delicate cosmos that seemed to bathe me in its welcoming glow, I was brought to the attention of my other awakening senses.
A soft surface below me, supporting my laid out form as well as an equally comforting sensation covering me from the top, perhaps a blanket? Was I in some sort of bed? It certainly didn’t feel like a regular mattress but at the same time I dare say was incredibly comfortable. If I were to close my eyes again I was sure it wouldn’t be too hard to fall back to sleep.
How did I end up here? Where even is here?
My eyes blinked, clearing the last remnants of my sleep induced vision.
Was it night time? Those lights above resembled stars but also didn’t. The atmosphere was also eerily quiet and strangely had an odd sense of weightlessness to it, like the effects of gravity were significantly reduced. Huh.. weird.
I subconsciously let out a breath not thinking much of it, however to my astonishment I watched as a trail of bubbles appeared from my exhale and steadily floated upwards before eventually dissolving some few feet above me. What th-
Bubbles? I blinked.
Since when do I breathe bubbles? It was safe to say that I was becoming all the more confused by the minute….and a little cautious.
I racked my brain for an explanation. The only instance where creating such an anomaly was possible was if one was…
Realization came barreling into me and my eyes grew to the size of saucers.
If one was… “Underwater..” I weakly verbalized that last word.
Like a switch being flipped my heart skyrocketed as I abruptly shot up into a seated position. Blood rushed to my head in the sudden change of position as I shivered, clutching my throat in concern. I disregarded the current environment I was placed in as my fingers grazed over three distinct grooves on each side of my neck. I felt them open and close causing me to yelp out in surprise, retracting my hand instantly.
“What, what is this!?”
I gasped, my logical brain causing me to think that I was suffocating due to the fact that I was submerged in water.
That’s when flashes of images invaded my mind. Brief memories of scenery, of phantom sensations.
I remember being carried and tossed into water and then… I was in incredible pain.
I continued to squirm and let in hesitant inhales, still weary of not being able to effectively extract oxygen from the water. I tasted the faint acidity of salt as it entered my mouth along with the water. Where I thought it would overwhelm my sinuses it did the exact opposite, rather it somehow sparked little zaps of energy to circulate through me from the top of my head to the very tips of my toe-
Oh god, I can’t feel my toes!
I immediately tried to move my legs but my brain couldn’t identify or locate the certain limbs or muscles associated with them. It was like they didn’t exist anymore. Or more so, like they had merged..
Gulping down another lot of sea water, that somehow felt ridiculously right, I directed my gaze down to my current dilemma. I had been right as my eyes took in the blanket-like material present as it covered me from the hips down. Dark greenish thatching conveniently hiding the mystery that was my questionable limbs…or lack thereof?
My heart thumped and my breath wavered as I froze, at a loss as to what to do next.
Should I lift it up and see the damage or play it safe and remain blissfully ignorant? Oh the choices.
After a few moments I willed myself to snap out of it, furrowing my brows in determination. No Y/n, be strong, you’ve gotten this far – wherever this is – you can do this. You can’t just sit here and be clueless forever!
My inner banter resolved, I shakily gripped the edge of the soft blanket, scrunching it up slightly like one would do a stress ball, because as sure as hell I needed the outlet. The faint aching that had sprouted from deep within the beds of my nails from this very action all the while going completely unnoticed amidst the mental chaos.
Come on, come on, I continued to pester myself. It’s not that hard! Just chuck the darn thing off!
But really, who could blame me for acting hesitant?
Waking up in an unknown place with no indication on whether you’re safe or in danger, on top of not knowing whether you still had functioning limbs was bound to make anyone feel uneasy. Not to mention the fact that my body had seemingly mutated to breathe underwater of all things. Life’s too boring for stuff like this to normally happen. Books or movies yes but not in regular, non-fictional reality. Dreams were another possibility but this felt way too real for that to be the case. I even did the classic pinch on the arm and low and behold an unpleasant prick of pain made itself known.
Dreams..
Up until this point, my mind had been encompassed in a – lack of better words – bubble of amnesia. That was until the subject of dreams irreverently sidled in to pop that pocket of forgetfulness, causing all my previous memories to flood in like the water around me. Past experiences fell into place now creating a clear and concise path on how I found myself in my current predicament.
Dreaming of agonizing nights on the beach…them practically persuading me to come travel to that lonely seaside town. To go there and find the truth…truth of my past, of myself…
Truth of who I really am.
“Ai child, ye be one of 'em... A mermaid."
Mermaid.
Before I knew it, the strange blanket that was previously covering me was flying upwards away from my trembling form. Its unusual trajectory produced a slight undercurrent that gently flowed up and around my face, lifting small tresses of my hair along with it where they flowed and fanned out behind me like strands in a breeze.
But these things were all good and forgotten as something far greater in uniqueness had come and none too kindly knocked them into oblivion to claim that all important first place.
This can’t be real..
No, no..
This can’t be real!?
My body sat stock still, frozen in place; in time... My blood ran cold as it filled my ears, making them ring.
For there, taking up the bottom half where my legs used to be, was a long and sleek tail.
Stemming from my hip bones and just below my navel area, rows and rows of tough yet delicate looking scales made themselves known. They overlapped one another like a finely woven tapestry where they eventually branched away to make way for a wide and sweeping fluke. When I looked a little closer at the-… my fins, I noticed that they were slightly iridescent, as reflected from the strange lighting above me.
What…h-how?..
All I seemed to be capable of doing was to gape and stare intensely and then gape some more. No, maybe that was just my inner gold-fish finally surfacing, I certainly had the physical attributes to pass for one.
My mind, which was a toss between what I can only pinpoint as a nervous wreck and a cautious trance, didn’t process one of my hands slowly reaching forward to graze over a section of my new fishy limb. To my surprise the tiny, plated bits of armor were incredibly smooth, like flat tiles of polished gemstones. But what was even more awe inspiring was their distinctive shade.
Not blue yet not quite a purple colour either, I sat there and contemplated this conundrum. No.. it was moreso somewhere in between those two prominent hues and a perfect combo of them at the same time.
I felt my eyes gloss over then with a strange form of nostalgia, a significant weight creeping up in my chest.
That colour…
It reminded me of lonely days just before or after my countless shifts at work, of staring out of my tiny bedroom window just after the sun had slumbered behind the horizon. The colour the sky would transition into, like a celestial body of water that purely existed between the cusp of day and night.
The somber yet deceptively beautiful energy I would get enveloped with every time I found myself immersed in that strangely intimate setting. Knowing that there were still sights like this, although rare and fleeting, that were worth living for regardless of the outweighing negativity, dullness and tiring aspects the grim world would constantly dominate me with…
That colour..
Within such a view, I would witness how the first remnants of stars would appear and how on certain days of the month, a delicate crescent would hang near where its sibling would have just descended; chasing him, longing for his company.
Those evenings in particular were always my favourite… In a way, they were like looking at a reflection of myself; a tiny sliver of light quietly drifting through a sea of uncertainty, purely existing but vying for something more.
Though on the flip side, it also in a way served as a desirable state of existence, a dream to strive towards. Instead that moon, rather than wandering aimlessly through a nullifying sea, would be rather at home in her element. The equilibrium of purples and blues would instead be a place where she would wholeheartedly belong basking in the utter contentment her deprived soul no longer craved.
Oh, that colour…
A droplet of warmth trailed down my cheek, almost instantly getting absorbed by the liquid around me like it had never been there to begin with. My lips trembled yet still turned upward to form a minute but genuine smile of admiration.
Of gratitude.
That was when I knew. That was when that lightbulb of revelation shined above me, as it finally granted me a name.
Indigo.
I blinked back more of that warmth that sheened my orbs.
A colour of rarity, of loneliness, but also of the purest serenity in the toughest and silent of times. A pigment of reflection, a beacon of reverence… a lighthouse of hope.
Indigo… that’s what it was called..
The one aspect that got me through the day by day repetitiveness of life where everything and anything seemed utterly worthless; futile in its entirety.
Yes, Indigo..
It was my colour… is my colour…
For if there was one thing that I could claim in this life, this universe, that was and would be solely mine and mine alone.. it would definitely have to be the etheric colour of indigo..
Now physically displayed in the form of shining scales for not just myself but for the world to see, that in itself only further solidified that notion.
For it was that distinct yet fleeting ocean between light and darkness that was and is my very essence…
I allowed one more minuscule droplet of warmth free before I reluctantly guided my gaze back upwards to finally get a full view of where I was.
From what I could gather, I was smack-dab in the center of a circular room of sorts. Its walls were formed of tough rock while its floors were made up of what I could only assume was a type of sandstone by their colour and texture. There were the strange starry lights above of course and the ‘bed’ that I was placed within that was slightly elevated off the ground by a platform of more yellowish sandstone.
My eyes caught on to places on the walls where small sections were carved out to form in-built shelves where nick-nacks of various sizes were securely set upon. Glass jars of different trinkets and coloured liquids, boxes and chests of no-doubt invaluable possessions as well as a few crystals spread amongst all the chaotic order. These tiny details made the place seem more personal and lived in.
Lived in by who?, my mind uttered to me.
Waves of ink shadowing pearly skin glided through my mind. The lingering feeling of strong, pale hands directing me towards billowing salty depths. Those brooding cerulean orbs that constantly put me in a trance.
Yoongi..
This place must be his..
My head snapped to the one remaining feature of this organically structured room that I missed. Directly in front of me was a large archway donned with a piece of curtained fabric, blocking me from seeing where it led. An entryway. The doorway to his bedroom if the thing I was lying on was anything to go by.
It would have had to have been a good solid five or so minutes that whizzed by where I just aimlessly locked eyes on that one lone doorway, not knowing if I should entertain the notion of venturing out of it to see what other anomalies await. How could a room feature be so imposing in that sense, like it was some sort of inanimate dictator of my fate.
To go through or not to go through?
I looked down at my tail then back up towards the doorway, the drapery that hung from it appearing black against the stone walls. But when I proceeded to look closer, I realized it was actually an extreme shade of dark blue; the kind of shadowy depths that a certain someone’s eyes would shift to when faced with various forms of tribulation.
Or a certain level of caution if I were to judge the current orbs staring back at me now after I went to blink once.
Gasping in surprise, I jumped in my seat, not expecting the sudden intrusion. Misjudging the strength of my jolt and forgetting about the lack of gravity that comes with being submerged in water, my body shot up about 3ft, the salty liquid only aiding my ascent.
“Eek!!”
Oh god, oh god, oh god!
Help!
I was like a cartoon character, spastically waving my arms around, trying to grab ahold of something to stop the upwards momentum of my body. Any attempt to maneuver myself in an orderly manner went right out the window. My tail, a dead weight, didn't help in the slightest. My brain was unable to translate the new body part and as a result ran up blank on potential movement altogether.
“Well if this isn’t a sight to behold. Awake and already making a fuss I see.” A calm, mocking voice rang out in contrast to my otherwise chaotic kerfuffle. A slight shiver raked through me at the words.
I craned my neck to the direction of their source but the sudden change in rotation caused me to tumble down in spirals and awkward somersaults, my tail, due to its length and mass causing the majority of my spontaneous water aerobics.
Gosh, I’m gonna be sick, the constant spinning and view change encouraging my stomach to turn sour. Blue and green swirls blurring my vision.
A huff met my ears after several more seconds, the sounds much closer than before, almost like they were right beside me.
That was soon justified when my body collided with warmth, my hands smoothing over something broad and sinewy. A different and much larger pair quickly snagged onto my forearms, evidently stopping my next body roll in its tracks. One powerful tug downwards later and I was back to where I had initially started, the familiar bedding in the center of the room supporting my seated form as my indigo tail flopped limply over its side, swaying in tune to the moving water.
Not knowing I was holding my breath all that while, I let out a much needed sigh of relief, my gills opening to release some tension in the form of excess water and bubbles.
“Not a minute has passed and you’ve already managed to find a way into my arms. He rasped. “What’s your next move, woman? Falling from the sky?”
Frowning at the comment that was dripping with sarcasm, I looked to my right, my snarky savior meeting my gaze, mouth turned up in a slight smirk.
“Yoongi..” his name left my lips before I knew it. I blinked a couple of times to get ahold of my bearings, the last of my queasiness thankfully subsiding. He just stared down at me from where he was sitting next to me, an arm’s length or so between us which I would have appreciated more if not for his ever present haughtiness.
“Hmm, you remember my name, there may be some hope for you yet.”
Before I could come up with a reply to his quip, I was drawn to a particular formation of scales much like my own swaying lazily from side to side. They were so dark that I was sure they were capable of sucking the light out of the very space around them. I noted the slither of skin they faded out from, marking their starting point at the occupant’s waist, and from there roughly connected the dots.
Another tail… His tail…
This was Yoongi’s tail..
I stared agape.
It complimented his inky locks perfectly; a solid amalgamation of corded muscle plated over by jewels of pure night. A powerful looking fluke spanned almost double the width of my own, the innermost membrane of it radiating an all too familiar deep cerulean.
Beautiful…
I immediately diverted my gaze, having just realized what I was doing. Ashamed at my thoughts. Oh gosh, was it rude to stare at a mermaid’s…erm.. mer-man’s tail? Did I just break some unspoken rule in their culture, ogling like a freak?
Gaze now focused back on my own tail, I physically blanched. In comparison, it looked so puny and almost fragile, the superiority of his own weighing me down bit by bit. He could no doubt get up to ridiculous speeds from one measly flick of that huge and sturdy fin, or even knock someone out cold if subjected to the sheer mass of his tail’s scaled base.
I drew my sights upwards, praying that I didn’t weird out the merman that had remained silent all the while.
My worried thoughts were knocked out of the way however by another devastating sight. Well, that’s to say if being at the risk of bumping your nose into someone’s extremely bare chest is reason enough to warrant such a telling.
Heat rose as my throat locked up for a moment where I almost proceeded to choke on the water trying to pass through at the time.
“Y-you have no– w-where’s your shirt?!” I nearly fell over on my side from the speed at which I turned away, the resulting whiplash from all the sudden movements I was doing catching up to me, scrambling my brain. My cheeks were all but aflame and possibly boiling the water around them.
Mortified, the image of an expansive chest was forever burned into the back of my retinas; for better or for worse, I was still very much on the fence about. Wide plains and hardened ridges of moon-bathed skin swam in front of my vision tantalizingly where they joined to flow down into a tapered waist and taut stomach. He was more toned than I had initially thought, his loose fitting clothing having done an exceptional job of deceiving onlookers on just how well rounded his physique actually was; shoulders wider than anticipated and arms gifted with a visible strength that I could vouch for from firsthand experience.
Having never been in the same vicinity of a man for more than a few minutes at a time as my jobs allowed it and from my blatant lack of socializing, a shirtless man for that matter was on a whole nother level of insanity.
“Uh yeah.. We are underwater. Clothing isn’t really a thing – or needed for our kind. Well… for males at least.”
I remained silent and rigid, not daring to look back at the ungodly scene that loomed behind me.
An appalled grunt resounded from the man, a resultant of my body language that screamed discomfort. “Flustered over a little skin of all things?” He probed on. At that, I felt him scoot closer to me, making me in turn shrink in on myself like some petrified turtle.
“I am n-not!” My entire face by this stage felt like the inside of a volcano. I swear I could make out the bubbling of steam floating around my head.
“You’re just a little.. I-I’m just not used to being up so close.. a-and personal like t-this that I’m forced to not look at anything else!”
An amused scoff rang out, he was an inch or so from my back; I could tell by the wave of intensity that errantly washed over me, lifting the hairs on my neck.
“Oh really, I would never have guessed.”
“C-can you put your chest away or s-something?” I shot out, only then noting how weird that sentence actually sounded and cringed. I never thought claustrophobia from the presence of one’s…uh…lack of clothing was a thing.
“No can do, I'm afraid. You’ve just gotta start getting accustomed to the new dress code we’ve got going for us down here.”
You mean a lack of one. I let a low grumble slip past at that inevitability.
“Or perhaps,” his head craned beside my ear, making me flinch, “You’re just afraid you might secretly enjoy that fact?”
If my head was presumably a volcano, then that last remark just caused its long awaited eruption. A mix of flustered irritation all but burst and overflowed out of me as I gritted my teeth, trying to stave off the influx of emotions. From there, I proceeded to clench my hands into fists.
Big mistake.
In the next moment, an uncanny bout of pain rippled from below the beds of my fingers as my palms almost got sliced open.
My nails had all but extended into two inch claws!
As any normal person would do in this situation I let out an ear splitting shriek. Who knew this would spook me out more than finding out that I had a whole ass fish tail instead of legs, or be on par to the more mundane approach of simply viewing a man’s chest. Y/n, you really need to get your priorities straight in terms of the fright department. Pointy nails, really?
Holding my hands out away from the rest of my body, I went to shake them out, hoping that the action would somehow get rid of these needle-like atrocities.
Get ‘em off, these things! Get them away from me!
I could feel the eye roll from behind and not too long after a ripple of water washed over me. Those same large hands that had righted me before were now swallowing my own up in their tight grasp. He had swiftly maneuvered himself in front of me as I jolted at the contact, trying to yank them out of his hold but he was stubborn and held them strong.
“Always so jumpy.” He mumbled. “Relax, they’re just your–”
“Wha- What’s going on? What’s wrong with them!?
“First–” he cut in almost straight after with slight irritation, “You really need to calm down, something you seem to find particularly difficult!”
You try handling something like this for the first time and see if you fare any better. I really wanted to give him a piece of my mind in retaliation to his callousness. Jerk.
If the merman noticed my inner spite, he didn’t let on. Instead, he resorted to holding my hands still and in place, constantly squeezing them to stop their shaking. If I wasn’t already worked up enough with dealing with daggers in place of nails then the sudden hand holding would most certainly reign supreme in turning me into complete hysterics. No actually, let’s be real here, they were definitely working in tandem to get me over the edge.
“Do I really need to tell you to breathe again?” Yoongi uttered a little softer but still maintained that level of firmness. He was referring back to all the times he implored me to do so during that harrowing transformation of human to mermaid, however long ago that was now. “Work with me here, woman,” another squeeze of my hands followed as he waited for me to act on his request.
I shakily huffed as I closed my eyes, ridding my view of my monstrous nails. Working with the slits along my neck, I started a steady pace of one deep breath in and out. Such a process seemed to work, my breathing growing more calm and steady as the minutes ticked by. The awe factor that came about when utilizing my gills worked wonders in transforming my nerves into more bearable spouts of intrigue instead.
As my panic continued to fizzle out, I was soon guided out of my reverie by another firm squeeze from a set of pale hands. My eyes opened in an automatic reply and the bewitching blue of his own was the final nail that sealed my anxieties away – for now, at least.
He blinked, garnering my change in temperament and cleared his throat.
Guiding my gaze back down to the dilemma at hand (quite literally) he stroked the side of one of my ‘dagger nails’ with his thumb, my heart unknowingly skipping a beat. “These claws you’ve got here are what we call piercers. All merfolk have them, they’re really nothing special.”
I watched on as he allowed his right hand to part from the cocoon he had formed around my own and held it up before us, fingers splayed out in a backwards high five. The veins on the top of his palm pulsed while I barely made out the slightest twitch of his fingertips. Half a second later, five lengthy nails shot up like pointed spears. They were identical to my own, although maybe a little longer if I wanted to be really particular. He turned his hand so I could view them from multiple angles.
“They’re able to extend as you see here and…” A sound similar to a sword getting sheathed met my ears as they all too swiftly shrunk back down like they were never there to begin with, points now blunted at the ends; deceptively human. “…retract.”
I blinked, mind stark with disbelief.
“They’re used in both offensive and defensive measures, like most land predators you’ve no doubt seen somewhere in your time up there. They’re foremost a means of survival. The ocean isn’t like the surface; it can be tough and grueling to even the best of us. In the worst of cases, a mer’s piercers can be the only thing hovering between you and your end.” He stared between my eyes, weighing my reaction and continued when I appeared fine. “Anything from gripping onto surfaces if a current is too strong, tearing through netting to escape or ripping or even piercing into things for sustenance. All these things and more are applicable for an easier time down here in the deep.”
I dumbly nodded along to his explanation, trying to take in as much information as possible because I had a feeling that he wasn’t one who had the patience to repeat himself. Tuning into this ‘Mermaids 101’ lesson was imperative for my hopeful assimilation into this new lifestyle.
“They fully form when a mer reaches maturity. There’s a short transitional period beforehand where you can partially extend them, a sort of time of adjustment to get a grasp on how to work them fully.” He let out a tired sigh then, “That would’ve been a helpful time for you but I guess we can’t have everything come easy to us now can we.”
“T-that’s all fine and well but…uh…h-how do I make them shrink back to normal?” I spoke up, still eyeing my so-called piercers with discomfort. I certainly didn’t want to run the risk of taking somebody's eye out with these literal knives poking out. They looked like something straight out of a horror movie and were ever a safety hazard in my book.
Another strained sigh broke out from Yoongi's lips.
“Adrenaline can set them off; with your total lack of experience, I’d gather that even just tensing your hands can lead to the same conclusion, whether you’re in active danger or not.”
Great. My shoulders slumped at the realization. So even just exercising a joint or muscle wrong could lead to a good old ‘stabby’ surprise. How was I ever going to get a handle on these without accidentally impaling myself in the process?
I looked at Yoongi's one hand still wrapped around both of mine, my piercers poking out of the top like a bunch of upright harpoons. He made it look so easy. So mindless when performing the action of retracting his own.
“Look, for starters, your best bet is to completely relax your hands, detense everything that warrants any level of strain or effort. Think you can do that?”
Clearing my throat, I looked his way but was unable to meet his eyes once more, “I–I’ll try..”
Finally granting my hands freedom from his hold, he allowed them to float in between us as I willed them to go completely limp. Even in this state of forced calmness, I was still very much afraid of putting them any closer to my body where my vital organs were.
“Picture them – or rather – try to feel them getting shorter, like they’re getting sucked back into your fingers, merging with them, if you will.”
Taking his explanation into account and trying to work with what he said, I stared my piercers down like they were some unbecoming menace that needed to be put back in their place.
I stared.
And stared.
And stared..
My eyes scrunched up in concentration to the point where they were starting to strain and cause an oncoming headache. No doubt the scene I was putting up looked rather unflattering to the man who remained in front of me observing my amateur efforts.
At one stage I may have seen one or two of the spear-like nails slip down a few rungs but that may have just been my out-of-whack imagination playing tricks on me.
He must think I’m so pathetic. I mentally versed, after a good millennia of time had passed and my piercers were still very much present, standing upright and tauntingly proud.
My chest tightened. This was ridiculous. I couldn’t even control my own body properly. It was like I was a newborn baby all over again.
I gave them another long, hard stare, trying and failing to bend the menacing blades to my will. Their imaginary tongues would most definitely be sticking out at me right about now, making fun of my loss.
Urk! Nothing’s happening!
“Stop.” Yoongi’s voice cut through the tension as if he could hear my mental battle. “You’re trying too hard.”
“It’s hopeless.” I let out a struggling sigh. “They won’t…I-I can’t–”
“Yes you can.”
I went to deny his claim with another despondent retort but he spoke up again.
“Even I don’t expect you to be a natural at this right at the get go. I may be forward in how I deal with the majority of my shit but even I have to admit, I’m not that much of a hard ass.”
Hmm, that remains to be seen. I wanted to say, but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt; just this once.
“Now tell those defeating thoughts I see gnawing away at you to get a life, relax, and start again. And try to really feel them this time. If you at least do that then your instincts should kick in and the rest more or less should come smoothly.”
A trail of bubbles left my mouth in discouragement as I tried to focus on the piercers themselves; as Yoongi emphasized, on how they felt.
I felt how surprisingly lightweight they were as opposed to their almost stone-like hardness, how they sprouted seamlessly from the very base of my nail beds, them being the solid unbreakable roots that supported the promise and outcome of flowering thorns. The blood that pulsed evenly up through my fingers and underneath each bed, the life giving water that sustained those uncanny roots.
I loosened my shoulders and breathed, welcoming in the water swaddled oxygen and followed the way it sent tingles right down to my bones. My joints and limbs swarmed with a sense of relief and utter vitality, thanking me for rewarding them with the sunlight-like sustenance they needed in order to thrive. I sailed along those feelings and sensations of rightness down to the start of those same roots.
They vibrated.
Relax.
They aren’t bad, they’re not to be feared or anything to be repulsed at; no, they’re an extension of yourself. They are you and you are them. You are innately connected.
More vibrations rippled along my neighboring fingers; a harmony conjoining to form one synchronized note.
You are at their mercy and in turn, they are also equally under your command. You each hold a mutual bond that at its core is unanimous in principle.
Breathe, relax, feel..
They are you and you are them..
My eyes suddenly shot open at a strange feeling of finality. I didn’t dare look down to see if my mental tinkering had worked in my favor or had made things abundantly worse to the point where I would be in desperate need of a manicure.
“Are they..?” I couldn’t get the rest of my question past my lips. Dread and hope fought a deathly battle in my throat, clogging it in the process. Yoongi, still able to grasp the rest of what I was going to ask, voiced his reply.
“See for yourself.”
Not giving me much of a choice, I resigned to my fate and glimpsed down at my piercers. All the while I cursed the merman for not telling me outright if they were back to normal or still in their monstrous state of existence.
No, not monstrous, I quickly corrected myself. No, they were just… different. I won’t lie and say that I was completely in acceptance of them, even after that weird symbiotic experience I just felt and envisioned. Like any new development in someone’s life, they were going to take some extensive warming up to.
So it was at that expense then that I couldn’t help but curl my lips up into a triumphant smile, shaking with joy and relief. Because before me once more was my all too normal and familiar ‘human’ nails, in all their blunt and ordinary simplicity.
My gaze rounded up to Yoongi’s at this, shyness temporarily pushed to the back by a dominant spout of victory.
“I-I did it!” I was practically bouncing in my seat like a little kid.
The faintest telling of satisfaction was delicately painted on the merman’s usually hardened face. He calmly looked at me and grunted a sound of approval. His annoyance seemingly put to the back burner while he allowed me this moment of glory; tolerating it silently. If that was all the complimenting and congratulations I was going to get from him then I’d gladly accept it.
From what I had gathered, this momentary display of positivity he portrayed was something of a rarity for Yoongi. His expressions always seemed to range from one of three visible states: stark emotionlessness, emotionless stoicism, or, if you wanted to get really fancy, a brooding anger or annoyance that was often riddled with blunt sarcasm every necessary chance it got.
Yes, a splendid selection indeed.
Not to say my range of emotions were any better. Far from it. Who would want to be around someone who couldn’t meet you in the eye more than half the time and when they could miraculously get a glimpse of your face was then subjected to an uncomfortable front of nervous awkwardness.
Yeah, I’d take casual stoicness over extreme shyness any day.
I willed my nails out of their bedded sheathes once more, inexperience still getting the best of me as they stiffly shot out, a dull thrum of pain ever present. Getting them back down though was definitely the more taxing part. More often than not they kept shooting back outwards when they had just managed to blunt back down.
“Are they always meant to..erm.. h-hurt.. w-when they extend?” I asked, taking note of yet another wavelet of burning coursing through my nail beds.
“The first few times, yes. They’re like any other muscle really. The more you use them the less effort your body has to expend over time.”
Still scared and awed all at the same time, I was slowly getting lost among the process of my piercers, trying to get as much of a feel as I could to not warrant a later accident. Though I knew that worrying fact was inevitable.
Sheath, unsheathe. In, out.
Just when I was about to release them again for another glimpse that would leave me gobsmacked, I was abruptly stopped.
“Ok, ok, cut it out, you’ll give yourself a cramp if you keep playing with them like that.”
I flinched and guiltily lowered my hands to rest in my scaled lap, a ‘sorry’ taking up residence on the tip of my tongue out of instinct but I managed to swallow it down.
He sighed then, clearly seeing my state of submissiveness like I had just been slapped.
A moment of tense silence floated around us. The merman ever so slightly looming closer to my bent form when I failed to move, his night-clad scales only adding to the growing shadow he cast upon me; a blanket of darkness.
“You can look at me, you know. You don’t have to be so shy and defensive all the time.”
I unconsciously shivered.
I would if I could…
My life beforehand hadn’t exactly been a safe haven for allowing my trust and confidence to run free.
If anything, it has only influenced me to close myself up to the point where my worries and insecurities became my only safeguard against potential disappointment and pain in the long run.
Heh, what good that did when I decided to take a risk for once and hop onto that bus that day, catalyzing all this mess.
Gills opening and closing, I craned my neck upwards, once more catching the speckled display of lighting that decorated the rocky ceiling above us, just like starlight.
“T-Those lights up there…w-what are they?”
My obvious deflection of his accusation surprisingly didn’t seem to anger him, as he let go of inquiring further. He shifted to my side and joined me in gazing up at the glittering amassment, not nearly as enamored as I was at the sight and replied after a few beats.
“Stellaris algae.”
My intrigue appeared to prompt him further in an explanation, however reluctant he was from his almost monotonous words. “It grows in dotted clumps and glows – well as the name suggests – like stars…. What was it that humans like to call it? You know, for how it lights up?” He paused, searching for the term. “Bioluminescent?”
I hummed my understanding and couldn’t help but voice my own simple thoughts. “It’s beautiful…”
I felt his gaze at my side then but remained viewing the speckles of green and blue, pushing down my self-consciousness.
“I suppose it is.” He let out in barely a whisper and I went to tuck a floating strand of hair that breached my line of sight behind my ear.
A steady wave of tingling energy reverberated between us as I hung onto my composure, the bioluminescence of the star-like algae helping me slightly as it gently lulled me into a state of reverence as I basked under its glow.
How can anyone get sick of such a sight? Yoongi must be blind…
Said merman dropped beside me, severing my musings and I ever so slightly inched away.
“While I hate to cut your stargazing short, the real stars will be gracing us not before too long. I think we’ve stalled with things long enough.”
Really, it’s almost night? I blinked.
“Though I can’t really fault you for not knowing I guess. You can’t really tell it, what with being as deep down in my den as we are.”
Talk of time curiously drew me back to the subject of my impromptu nap.
“H-How long was I out?”
He raked his hand through his locks and I tried to not focus on how the motion made my insides…feel things.
“Long enough for Helios to pass over twice.” He answered, taking note of my not so subtle increase of space I made between us and raised a brow.
Stumped, I gave him a look of confusion.
He snarked. “Right, I forgot I have to dumb my words down for you.” Frowning, I just managed to reign in my nails that had accidentally shot out halfway in response.
“Easy,” he griped, when he saw my claws, almost amused. “You’ve been asleep for two days, give or take.”
I actually did cough on the water this time.
“Two… two d-days!?”
He huffed nonchalantly at my shock.
“Relax, you weren’t dying or anything if that’s what you’re so worried about. It’s normal to take that long for your first time. Or I guess in your case, your first time after so many years? Either way, I’ve seen others take longer, so you're fine.”
I remained silent at his rather rocky attempt at reassurance, questioning its validity.
“Now, before you feel tempted to go on another one of your panic sprees, how about we see if you can stomach some food. After such an ordeal, I’m surprised you can still remain upright.”
Now that he mentioned it, I was feeling a bit heavy with fatigue, like I hadn’t bothered to move in centuries.
“That would be good…t-thanks.”
“Good cause, while your piercers are one less thing to worry about, you still have one other important thing to deal with. Seeing as it’s you we’re talking about, you’re gonna need all the strength you can get.”
I gave him yet another look of confusion and he groused at my lack of awareness.
“You still have that to contend with,” he stated, pointing down at my lap where my tail rested.
The tail which remained to feel like an immovable log of petrified wood.
I let out a gulp and ruminated as I often did in times of uncertainty and caution, which was more often than I would’ve liked in my life before and up to this.
Right. How hard can that be? I blanched, trying to let the indigo of my scales soothe me.
Knowing me, not easy enough..
“You are back.” It’s like a statement; an observation perhaps, but at the very least he sounds pleased. Opening your front door revealed Yoongi, ass planted on the couch like you left him. As happy as you are about that, the thought passes your mind that maybe it isn’t such a good idea to leave him out of water for so long. Neither of you seem to know the consequences after all, but he also isn’t fond of bath time. Maybe he’d be more into it if you add bubbles…
“I am, yes, and I come bearing gifts for you.” Thankfully the store wasn’t that crowded, only a few people scuttling around the isles. It’s not located too far from your little vacation home, just a small thing that supplies groceries and other necessities.
“… Gifts?” Yoongi looks at you curiously, eyes shining as they glint in the light. The TV is still going, playing some sort of realty show trash. You can only begin to guess the things that ran through the poor merman’s head watching it. Lifting up the bags, you shake them slightly to show off the contents.
“Well, I got some food, but I also got a few other things. More bandages for one, some ointment, and I found this cute little comb for your hair. It’s all tangled…” He blinks at you, hand coming up to touch his hair. It still looks sleek and shiny, but it’s certainly seen better days. Yoongi fingers at his bangs for a bit as you take your shoes off and come into the living room.
“I see…” He shifts as you plop down beside him, tentacles buzzing with what seems to be excitement. Pulling the comb out because it’s probably the most exciting item you purchased, you show it to him with a small smile. It’s a pretty little thing, opalescent and covered in shells, resembling something that you would likely find on the beach. Yoongi holds his hands out for it, his fingers brushing against yours as he grabs for it.
“This is for me?” He turns the comb over in his hand slowly, eyes trained on the object like it’s the most important thing in the room. There’s an unreadable look in his eyes as he observes it, his eyebrows pinching together in thought. Moving a little closer, you nod your head to confirm that yes, it is his.
“What is it for exactly?” Taking it back from him, you grab for a portion of his hair without even thinking about it. If he minds, he doesn’t show it, letting you hold the comb up to it and slowly run it through. Yoongi nods himself, lips pursed as watches the tangles in his hair slowly fall away as if they were never there in the first place. You keep it up, grabbing different areas and brushing through it so his hair can be more manageable. Yoongi stays relatively quiet, simply observing your actions.
“It’s to get all of the snags out of your hair Yoongi. I suppose it’s like a hygiene item, like a toothbrush or soap.” The man isn’t paying much mind to you now, looking far away, a slight rumbling leaving his chest with every pass of the comb. It makes you secretly happy that he finds comfort in such a small action. At least, you hope it’s comfort.
“You are gifting this to me?” The words are quiet, his eyes closed now as he allows you to preen him. You hum out in agreement, thinking about how pretty he’d look with his hair all braided. Maybe you’ll have to test your luck sometime and see if he’ll allow it.
“Yes Yoongi, it’s a gift for you, yours to keep.” The barest of smiles graces his face, cracked lips turning upwards with what must be some form of happiness. Perhaps you should have got him chapstick too… You’ll get home more things the next time you’re out. It’s too bad you can’t take him with really, he’d probably enjoy all the new things. Suddenly his eyes open, the dark depths boring straight back into your own curious orbs.
“… I accept.” He moves closer, closer until his face is level with yours. His hand raises up, fingers brushing against your jaw, feather light but with purpose. You slow your movements, unsure of what the man is thinking as his eyes glaze over somewhat. His tongue pokes out to wet his lips, and Yoongi leans in even closer-
“Knock KNOCK bitch, open up!” A shrill voice rings out from the other side of the font door, one you know all too well. Fucking Jimin and his terrible timing. Yoongi glares at the door like its his worst enemy, claws digging into the side of the couch as he clenches them.
“What was that egregious noise?” As soon as the words leave his lips through gritted teeth, you shush Yoongi, trying desperately to get the man to be quiet. Choosing to ignore you, he goes to speak again before you slap your hand over his mouth, only slightly worried about his sharp teeth digging into the flesh of your hand.
“I know you’re in there, your car is here! You can’t honestly expect me to leave now. Come on sweetheart, I even got you that Louis dress you’ve been eying up as a gift!” Sighing in acceptance, you don’t notice the way Yoongi’s eyes darken at the word “gift”. Pulling back, you decide to just tell Jimin that there’s a merman staying with you because it’s not like you can really hide it. The house is extravagant but it’s certainly not large enough to hide Yoongi.
Before you can fully pull away, there’s hands on either of your arms, keeping you firmly in place. Yoongi, like the somewhat good boy he is, keeps quiet but leans into your space. Closer and closer until his nose brushes the side of your neck and he inhales softly. You wait calmly, not fully expecting him to nuzzle into your neck, nose rubbing back and forth almost like he’s trying to comfort you.
“Seriously ____, I just want to make sure you’re okay. You hung up so suddenly…” Jimin trails off on the other side of the door, voice barely more than a whisper now. The tone nearly breaks your heart, so you attempt to remove Yoongi with a high level of difficulty. He clings, face still hidden away, so you do the only thing you can think off.
Angling your own face downward, you shove your face into his neck, trying to be carful to avoid the slits that are likely some form of gills. Placing your nose against the cold skin there, you slowly rub it back and forth, hot air puffing out as Jimin continues to pull away at the door. Yoongi’s gone completely still, hands loosening their grip as he continues to chirp like a cat quietly.
“Yoongi, I’m going to answer the door now. I promise you, its not a threat, its just Jimin. Jimin’s a close friend, remember how I mentioned him before? He won’t try to hurt either of us.” Something like a snarl rips from Yoongi’s chest, but he lets you go completely, allowing you to stand up from the couch. You honestly have no idea what’s going on anymore, Yoongi being so clingy is a little odd to say the least.
Meandering over to the front door, you allow for Jimin to knock a few more times before ripping it open. Even with his sunglasses on, he looks surprised, eyebrows raising over the top of them as he pauses. His hair is golden, a change from the orange it was the last time you saw him, clothes light and flowy to accommodate the heat. A louis bag does indeed hang from his hand, likely holding the dress he came to bribe you with.
“Fuck, I thought you might actually have died or some shit. Come here!” The man springs forward, wrapping you tightly in a hug and you readily reciprocate. It’s been too long since you’ve seen him; more than a day without Jimin makes you sad honestly. You don’t know how he does it, but he always manages to put you in a better mood.
“What. The fuck. Is that?” The poor man gapes at Yoongi, eyes wide open in an unbelieving stare. Shuffling a bit, you poke his arm and wave Yoongi’s way, trying to play it off as nonchalant. Nothing about the situation is nonchalant though, Jimin looks like he’s about to piss his pants while Yoongi looks like he’s about to tear someone’s head off.
“This is Yoongi, he’s my pet fish.” Humor is the only deflection for how fucking nervous you are right now. Jimin doesn’t seem to process what you’re saying fully, eyes watching as tentacles whip around in the air. If you didn’t know any better, you’d say Yoongi seems rather mad. For what reason though, you’re unsure.
“If you’re in danger blink twice because what the fuck.” Shaking your head, you try to reassure him that its fine as he reaches for you, hand tugging lightly on your arm. Not the right move apparently. Yoongi snarls loudly like he had early, tentacles springing out toward where you stand threateningly. It’s a really good thing that he can’t actually move…
“You smell awful.” It goes dead silent in the room after that, no one daring to speak. Jimin looks back and forth between you and Yoongi, blinking with clear confusion written all over his face before he blanches. An understandable response considering you think he smells relatively nice.
“I don’t smell bad, the fuck?!” Yoongi doesn’t seem phased by his outburst, sharp eyes cutting from Jimin to you. It’s hard not to notice the way his face softens slightly, the way he’s so much more willing to actually address your presence.
“You don’t smell nearly as nice as my human. If you’d like, I can exterminate him and rid our home of the smell.” His human…? That’s certainly a new one, but you don’t really mind it. The threat kind of just fly’s over your head because Yoongi being kind to you is adorable.
“Get ri- Excuse me? I am a delight!” The merman actually scoffs, turning his nose up in clear distaste. Jimin bristles and mutters to himself before turning back to you, eyes wide and slightly crazed looking.
“I’m not leaving you alone with the random sea creature! What if he tries to eat you?!” At this point, the low snarls leaving Yoongi aren’t likely to stop. There’s a slight pang, the need to reach out and comfort him, but you also don’t want Jimin to freak the fuck out and lose his shit. Trying to keep your voice calm and sure, you reply slowly.
“He wouldn’t eat me Min, Yoongi’s a good boy.” He’s had plenty of chances to try and nibble on you and hadn’t. You consider that a win considering you dragged him back here yourself. Yoongi drags himself closer, grin sharp and twisted looking, eyes wide and watching.
“No, but I would certainly give him a taste.” A tentacle whips out, wrapping around Jimin’s leg tightly. Said man gasps noisily, a high-pitched shriek leaving his lips as he tries to pull back. They blink at each other for a moment as you stare on, unsure of what the right move is.
“Alright square the fuck up fish boy!” Jimin barrels past you suddenly, arms up and ready to fight like some sort of dumbass. Yoongi’s tentacles all lurch forward, wrapping around different areas of Jimin’s body to hold him back… and maybe tear him apart. Springing forward, you attempt to place yourself between the men, scared they might actually hurt each other.
“Holy shit, NO fighting! I just got these carpets okay looking and I don’t want to pay for more carpet cleaner!” Yoongi draws himself back instantly, some of the tentacles brushing against your body as he does. They’re almost soft as the slide against the exposed skin, purposely trying not to harm you. Jimin doesn’t move much, still on the defensive as he speaks up.
“Fine, but I’m staying for tonight at least. You best believe I’ll fry him up for breakfast if he tries anything.” Never in a million years had you thought you’d be involved in a fight where people were threatening to eat each other. Yoongi huffs out a sigh but concedes, tentacles coming closer to wrap around you instead.
“As long as you don’t touch my mate, we will be fine.” Your breath hitches at the word mate, eyes nearly popping out of your head in response. Mate… What. The. Fuck?
“Your what?!”
[Closer] - Jikook art for Cottagecore Jikook Fest
Tumblr media
Jimin finally managed to buy the small cottage by the sea he kept his eye on for the last few years. He’s so happy he can be closer to Koo again - showing the merman his new home is only the beginning of their story 🥰
Koo hates it when Jimin insists on brushing his hair, because it hurts a little. 😡 However, he allows that, because afterwards Jimin teaches him about the Land world and gives him pretty hairpins! 😊 He loves Jimin's bathtub and every time they're not busy, he comes to the little pier behind Jim's cottage and crawls his way to the door, so that Jimin can help him get to his favourite place 🥺
And when Koo's not there, Jimin baths, looking at the strange, emerald crystals he collects from the floor, where Koo's tail usually rests. He stores them by the window and every time he pays them even the smallest glance, he feels like the merman is right there, beside him 🤗
The Obsidian Pearl (I)
— pairing: mermaid seokjin x (f) reader — word count: 7.2k — warnings: yandere, descriptions of death/blood/violence — summary: Sailing through The Dead Man’s Passage is a death sentence and the whole crew knows it. But with the ship’s stocks dwindling fast, your captain is left with no other choice. When a haunting melody makes the crew jump ship one by one, you find yourself alone with the demon lurking in the murky red water. As the creature beckons you to jump into the icy ocean – “come to me, pet” – you find that you can’t do anything but obey.
Part 01 - 02
Tumblr media
"Captain, this is a bad idea."
A hush falls over the deck, a few whispers being passed back and forth between the crew as they watch you challenge the captain's decision. There's an audible gulp somewhere behind you as the captain pins you with a hard gaze, his jaw clenched tight with annoyance.
He taps the map that's spread out in front of him, voice leaving no room for argument as he says, "This is the fastest route."
"That may be, Captain, but it's not worth the risk. Haven't you heard the stories? The numerous crews that have gone missing after sailing in this area? There's a reason it's called The Dead Man's passage!”
A ripple of murmurs flow through the crowd at the reminder, the passage's deadly reputation making it somewhat of a ghost story – a tale every seafarer hears at one point or another. You don't know much; the few crews that have managed the journey safely have been tight-lipped about their experience, their eyes left haunted. The part that has always baffled you the most about the stories is that the ships themselves always make it through the passage, fully intact and filled with loot, but their crews never do. It's like they all vanish without a trace, like they've just been whisked away by the wind – never to be seen again.
The captain clears his throat, a sharp sound that cuts through the growing voices on deck, silencing them immediately.
"We have no choice. If we continue on the intended route we'll run out of food and fresh water a week before we reach the nearest port. Cutting through the passage will save us valuable time. I would never take this risk and endanger the crew if someone had done their job properly."
You glance to the side, catching the eye of the cowering boatswain.
He's young, far too young to handle such responsibility on his own. He's only just grown into his ears, the top of his head barely reaching the captain's shoulders. He was thrust into the position much too soon, but it couldn't be helped. The previous boatswain suddenly succumbed to an infected wound just a few days before you were scheduled to leave the last port. It left all of you scrambling to pick up the slack around the ship and the poor lad must've been forgotten in the mess.
You had tried to delegate someone to help him, but the captain had been firm that he needed to do it on his own, to build character. It's no wonder he wasn't able to calculate the needed supplies correctly, not when he was still grieving the loss of his mentor at the same time.
You notice the bead of sweat that rolls down the side of the young boatswain's face, his skin flushed with nerves. You can't let the poor lad be punished for his sorrow, not when this whole predicament could've been avoided.
Letting out a small sigh, you lower your head in apology, "I'm sorry, Captain. I should've made sure everything was in order, this is no one's fault but mine."
"I expected better from you, Quartermaster," The Captain's comment cuts deep, even though you know this wasn't your fault. "Very well. Seeing as you have placed our crew in peril, I doubt you will oppose the solution to the problem you have created?"
You grit your teeth, dipping your head lower as you say, "Of course not, Captain. I apologize for speaking out of turn."
Clenching your hands by your side, you try to focus on the hot sun beating down your neck as you tune out the captain's voice. Getting angry won't do you any good here, not when you've already admitted defeat. The heavy thumps of feet moving all around you tells you that the crew is already beginning to change the ship's course, listening to the captain's orders as he yells them out. You shake your head, stomach churning as you realize that no one dares to challenge him, even if they all know deep down that they're being lead straight to the deaths.
You steel yourself as polished boots pause in front of yours, eye twitching as you look up and meet the captain's gaze. His solemn expression doesn't quite match the light tone of his voice as he leans in to say, "A hungry crew is a dangerous crew, Y/n. I don't think I need to remind you why that is."
Suppressing a shudder, you don't give him the satisfaction of knowing that his little comment has had the intended effect, bad memories already swirling in the back of your mind. Instead, you stare him down, defiant as ever until he shakes his head and walks off in the direction of his cabin.
It's only when he's out of sight that you reach up to trace the raised skin on your throat, the jagged scar that greets you whenever you glance in a mirror. No, there's no reminder nor threat needed. You know first-hand just how desperate a person can become when they're feeling depraved of what makes them human.
You swallow thickly, ripping your hand away from the old wound. There's no use dwelling on the past, there's nothing from that day that can help you now.
The sound of the sails billowing out as they catch more wind jerks your attention forward, gentle waves crashing against the hull of the ship as it picks up speed. You take a deep breath, filling your lungs with the salty air and pray to whatever god that might be listening that you'll be able to make it out of the passage alive.
Tumblr media
The night has already fallen, the moon high in the sky, by the time you catch sight of the two large rock formations in the distance. Everything about the passage screams unnatural and strange, the two small mountains practically appearing out of nowhere in the middle of the sea. While they look to be on the smaller side, you know there's no way to sail around them. The waters are littered with reefs and strong currents, all traps that are bound to sink unsuspecting ships. You can make out the faint outline of a few of them on the horizon, their broken masts and half-sunken hulls serving as a haunting reminder that the only way past the passage is through it.
You squint as you notice a faint glow in the distance, the light too obscure to make out properly on deck. You quickly make your way up to the helm, hoping the raised platform will provide a better view.
"What's that?" You murmur, shooting the coxswain a worried glance.
"Ain't anything good, that's for sure," The man grumbles in reply. He tightens his grip on the wheel, eyebrows drawn tight as the ship steadily draws closer and closer.
The faint glow grows brighter with each passing minute, more and more sources of light appearing all over the two mountains. You suck in a breath as the ship enters the passage, the area so tight it barely allows for two vessels to pass each other. The close proximity allows you to see the lights more clearly, and you're shocked to discover that it seems to be coming from huge white flowers sprouting from the mountain sides. There's something algae-like clinging to the base of the mountains as well, illuminating the edges of the passage like guiding lights, beckoning you in.
The ship glides smoothly through the channel, the soft current carrying you all through the quiet water. Based on the stories you've heard you were expecting treacherous waves and jagged rocks that appear out of nowhere to throw the crew off-board, but there's none of that. In fact, there's nothing that points to this passage being dangerous at all, no signs of broken planks or fabric clinging to the mountain, no sunken ships visible below the surface. You can almost fool yourself into thinking that no other humans have ever sailed through these mountains before.
As beautiful and untouched as the passage may seem, there is something terribly unnerving about the silence that has settled over the ship. The crew has gone completely still, like they're scared of breaking the quiet. Likewise, you can't really find it in yourself to make any noise either, your lips pressed firmly together as you anxiously scan the mountain for hidden threats.
You've almost made it halfway through the passage when you first hear it.
There's a low hum, barely louder than the noise of the water breaking against the ship, that echoes between the tall rocks. You have to strain your ears to hear it at first, but the sound seems to grow with each gust of wind in the ship's sails, gradually increasing the further into the mountains you go.
You can't make out any words, the language either too old or foreign for you to understand, but the angelic voice behind them makes your heart yearn. You can feel the melody wrapping itself around your heart, squeezing, as it roots itself in your ribcage, sorrowful tendrils clinging to each bone.
"Come to the water."
The wind carries the whisper straight to your ear, caressing your skin like a warm breath, before it travels on. You jerk forward at the sensation, whipping your head around to locate where the voice could be coming from.
There's no one around you aside from the coxswain who looks to be lost in thought, mouth slack as he stares ahead.
You glance down at the deck, frowning as you notice that more and more of the crew are beginning to abandon their posts. They're all migrating to the right side of the ship, walking on unsteady feet like they've been guzzling down barrels of mead.
"Come to me."
You wince as the singing grows more intense, your breath stuttering in your chest in response to the voice that's so desperately calling for you.
You blink, eyes struggling to adjust, as the flowers and the algae on the mountains begin to thin out, taking their light away with them. As if that wasn't bad enough, a great shadow is suddenly cast upon the passage, the last of the illumination you had rapidly disappearing behind thick clouds as the moon is hidden away.
You curse under your breath, mentally taking note of the lit oil lanterns hanging around the ship. There's ten, no– nine, but if you gather them all up and place them near the bow, maybe it'll be enough light to get the ship safely out of the passage?
"I need to– hey!" You stumble back as the coxswain bumps into you, his eyes unseeing as he stumbles towards the stairs to the lower deck. A sudden drift to the side propels him forward, allowing him to slip out of your reach before you can grab his shirt and haul him back.
"Shit," You hiss, only giving yourself a split second to hesitate before whirling around to grab the wheel. The wood has already begun to turn left without the coxswain's steady hands to lead the way and the ship groans as you hurry to correct it back on the right path.
You keep a tight vise on the wheel, leaning forward to yell out for another crewmate to take over, when you hear the first splash.
Hurriedly glancing down at the deck, the swaying lanterns provide just enough light to show one of the cooks climbing over the railing, his movements stilted and jerky as he suddenly flings himself off the ship. Your scream is caught in your throat, your eyes wide with horror as you hear the subsequent splash of his body hitting the water.
What in the gods is going on?
Feet rooted to the floor and fear squeezing the back of your neck with a iron grip, you can only watch as the crew all clamber over the railing, throwing themselves off the ship one by one. The steady melody echoing between the mountains is only interrupted by the terrible sound of bodies sinking into the ocean.
Dread settles deep into the pit of your stomach as you realize there are no screams, no gasps for air, only silence – and him, the voice that's begging you to come rest along your brethren in the deep, peaceful ocean.
"No," You wheeze, shaking your head to rid the fog that's has begun creeping in. You cling to the wheel, fingers slick with sweat as you try to keep the ship steady, ignoring the blur that has settled at the edge of your vision.
"Captain!"
Hope shoots through your veins as you find your captain in the dwindling crowd, his bulky figure illuminated by the dancing lights as he stumbles over to the nearest crewmate, pulling them back from the railing. He pushes a few men back, his strength sending them sliding back to the middle of the deck.
You almost loosen your grip, ready to run down and help him, when he abruptly turns his back on them and jumps over the railing in one swift motion. He lands on the small ledge just outside of it, heels shuffling not to slip as he grips the banister with one arm.
"Captain!" The scream rips out of your throat, carrying across the silent deck like a bullet.
The captain shudders as it reaches him, his body jerking back and forth like he can't make up his mind on whether he should jump or not. Horrified, you watch as he twists his upper body around to face you, his expression stricken as he meets your gaze across the ship. He almost looks like he just came out of a trance, his face drenched in sweat and skin grey with fear as he tries to figure out how he ended up at the edge of the vessel.
You can see mouth opening, his lips forming around the first syllables of your name when the angelic voice suddenly grows louder, the haunting melody reverberating between the mountains. The captain's mouth goes slack, his eyes rolling into the back of his head as he once again succumbs to spell that was controlling him. The last thing you see as the captain lets go of the railing, is the serene smile that takes over his face, his eyes closing as he falls backwards into the ocean.
Heart pounding inside your chest, you stare blankly at the now empty spot where your captain stood. You flinch, sick to your stomach, at the heavy splash that follows only seconds later.
"Lay your tired body to rest."
Your fingers twitch at the command, a little whisper in the back of your mind begging you to obey – to give in. You legs have started to shake, sweat sliding down your back in a steady stream at the effort it takes to resist the pull.
Even as you struggle to gulp down enough air, your body in overdrive from the unfathomable things you've just seen, you still find your pulse quickening, panic flooding every fibre of your being as it finally dawns on you what's going on.
You've sailed right into the territory of a siren.
Perhaps you should have seen it coming – the tales of the passage all emphasize how it's only the crew that go missing, not the ships. You've heard whispers about creatures lurking in the deep ocean, of monsters that eat humans, but you never expected that you would ever encounter them. They were folktales, something you chose not to believe in to protect your own sanity as a seafarer. Now, you can only curse yourself for not trusting your instincts the moment you felt the unearthly atmosphere of the mountains; that you didn't have enough forethought to at least stuff your ears and tie each crewmate to their post as a precaution.
Maybe it would've been enough to save the them – to save you.
You cower against the wheel as the song grows so loud it causes your ears to ring, the voice promising peace and eternal slumber. It urges, demands, your body to move and you whimper fearfully as your feet take a step back against your will.
You can't tell how much time has passed since the ship entered the mountains, it could be mere minutes or it could be hours – but as you peer into the looming darkness, you can finally make out where the passage ends and opens back up to the vast sea. The joy fizzles out before it can even take root, the sight in front of you filling you with a sense of glum acceptance. Even if you can see the end, there's no way you'll make it there. The ship is moving too slow, almost no wind making it past the tall mountains.
Your head throbs painfully as the siren's whispers turns more insistent. You can feel the creature's wrath, how angry he is that you're still resisting him. The increased pressure behind your skull makes you groan, your vision going dark as you're hit with a sudden dizzy spell.
Gripping the wheel, you're confused to find that the woods feels thicker, less polished, than it was only seconds before. You force your eyelashes to part despite the sharp pain it gives you, blinking furiously to clear your swimming vision. Your knees nearly buckle as the silent waters below come into focus, your body no longer on the upper deck. Dazed, you stare at the white knuckled grip you have on the railing, your feet tucked into the openings between the posts.
"Oh gods," You whisper shakily.
You have no idea how you got here.
The sound of a soft splash makes you turn your head to the side. Your throat runs dry as you watch the big circle of ripples that fan out from the spot where something dived underwater, the waves much too big to come from a normal fish. As you keep looking at the one spot in disbelief, one of the lanterns on the ship sway outwards, following the rocking of the ship.
It takes you a moment to realize what you're seeing, the stale bread you had earlier that day shooting up your throat as the waters on the side of the vessel is lit up. The ocean is no longer the clear blue it was when you entered the passage but rather a murky red, saturated with what must be the blood of your crewmates.
The sight makes you heave, tears springing to your eyes as the reality truly settles in.
You're going to die.
The siren – the predator – luring you all to your deaths, is clearly waiting right below, ripping everyone apart the moment they're submerged below the water. Even if the shock of the cold sea woke them up from their trance, they would have no chance to fight off such a vicious creature. You have no chance. The moment you step off the ship, you're dead.
You sob as the shock tapers off, the singing once again hitting you with full force. You can't stop your own body as you clumsily clamber over the railing, your feet moving without your permission. It's only when you hit the ledge that you find yourself able to jerk back, a moment of temporary control allowing you to plaster yourself against the banister.
Staring down at the crimson sea, you find your mind going blank. You always expected to see flashes of your life pass by your eyes when faced with certain death but there's nothing. No happy memories to numb the inevitable pain of being torn apart, muscles shredded to bits as water fills your lungs. No echoes of the voices you adore saying that they love you and that everything will be okay.
Instead, there's only the deadly quiet sea and the siren's taunting whispers urging you to jump.
You eye the dark water, noticing a large shape moving closer just under the surface of the ocean. You mindlessly reach for the dagger on your hip, clutching it tightly in your hand even if it means you're only clinging on with one arm. If your death is unavoidable, then you're sure as hell not going down without inflicting a deep cut or two.
As something begins to emerge from the water, the song that has been constantly ringing between your ears suddenly quiets down. Your skin puckers with goosebumps, all the hair on your body rising in fear as a head slowly rises above the surface. The siren's dark locks are one with the water, the long strands flowing into the ocean like spindly fingers. In the dark, there's no telling where it ends, as if the ocean is merely an extension of the creature itself.
Two pitch black eyes, as dark and deep as the starless skies above, lock onto yours the moment they rise above the surface. The flickering lantern doesn't offer much assistance but the poor light tells you that it has no discernible pupils, nothing to indicate that there's any life in them. It's like staring into an endless void.
Despite the chill those eyes send down your spine, your feet willingly takes another step forward, like the mere presence of the creature alone is enough to entrance your body. You let out a pained scream as you slip, your shoulder popping loudly as you manage to grab onto a post, one arm working desperately to keep you from failing into the water below.
"No, no, no," You whimper, gravity making it impossible to reach up with your other arm. You won't be able to pull yourself up even if you drop your knife, the small ledge above making it impossible to locate another post.
You glance down as you dangle from the ship, your grip almost slipping out of fright as the siren's maw comes into view above water. His jaw is unhinged, hellish, mouth stretched way past that of a normal human. It's filled with rows of fang-like teeth, all stained with crusted blood. Terrified, you watch as the siren seems to simply pop his jaw back into place, like the fact that it was just opened so wide it was touching his sternum poses no issues at all.
The creature tilts his head, thinking, as he watches you struggle to drag yourself up. He swims closer, the movement so fluent it looks like he's just gliding through the water. Your arm is shaking terribly by the time he's only a few feet away from where you'll hit the ocean, your shoulder screaming with hurt from holding on for so long.
Through the blinding pain, you see the siren reach out a webbed hand, his long black claws nearly the size of his fingers. He gives you a smile you can only describe as sinister, blood stained teeth on display and his voice melodious as he says, "Come, pet."
You can feel the thrall taking hold this time, your body willingly going slack one limb after the other. You have no time to think, no time to act, before your hand simply just lets go of the railing on its own volition.
In the second it takes for your body to fall, before your eyes squeeze shut and your body is surrendered to the water – all you can think as you spare the skies one last glance, is that the gods must be cruel if they can't even give you a starry night to look upon before you're torn apart by their horrific creation.
Tumblr media
Groaning, you slowly open your eyes. There's a dull ache at the base of your skull and every blink up at the pink-tinted sky only seems to make it throb more. The surface you're lying on is hard, terribly uncomfortable, and there's no steady rocking motion to soothe you back to sleep for a few extra minutes of rest.
Something feels wrong.
It's only when your eyes have fully adjusted to the soft light that you're snapped back to reality, the distant sound of waves breaking bringing back the memories of the night before. You jerk upright, heart racing, as they come flooding in all at once. The crew, the siren, the blood. You jumped. You should be dead.
You force yourself to take slow, steady breaths, shakily inhaling air through your nose as you glance around. You can't afford to panic right now, not when you don't know where the creature is or when it might come back.
The morning sun is just barely peeking over the top of the mountain that's blocking most of your sight, casting a large shadow over what appears to be a lake just in front of you. It's still dark, still dawn, on your side of the mountain and it makes the faint glow on the rocks all the more noticeable. You're too far away to tell for sure but you have a terrible feeling that it's likely the same flowers that you sailed past in the passage. And if you can still see them, that means you must be on the other side of the mountains you attempted to travel through.
You're sitting near the mouth of what appears to be a small cave, connected by a large piece of flat stone that's jutting out into the lake. It's lined with clusters of big and small rocks, creating an odd border along the sides of it. The mountain around the cave is unnaturally smooth, the incline too sharp for you to even think about climbing it. No matter how much you stare at the rock formation that's surrounding you, you can't find a way out. There's no open space that would allow you to escape.
You eye the other side of the lake with a shudder, noting that it looks to be more rough there with a few ledges and ridges you can probably use to haul yourself up. The only problem is; you'll have to actually swim across the deep body of water first. It sounds like a sure-fire way to get yourself eaten, though you doubt staying here is much better. The creature must've kept you alive and brought you here for a reason, and you're really don't want to find out why that is.
A pained gasp escapes you as you pull your right shoulder back. The initial adrenaline and panic when you woke up must've blocked out most of the hurt of your dislocated shoulder but now that it's starting to fade, it's coming back fast. The bone is still very much popped out of its socket, the area inflamed and swollen as you lightly touch it with trembling fingers. You swallow thickly as your arm begins to twitch, a burning spasm racing from your shoulder to the tips of your hands.
You bite down on your lip to stop your groan, tasting blood as the involuntary cramp continues.
"Fuck," You wheeze, eyes glazing over as you stare at the rising sun. If you're going to have any chance of escaping, you have no choice but to fix your shoulder.
You stuff the damp material of your shirt into your mouth, hoping it'll be enough to muffle your voice as you carefully lie back down on the stone. Years on the sea has taught you a thing or two and dislocated shoulders are a common injury when you're part of a crew that loves to brawl whenever they visit a tavern. You've seen the way they pale and yell when it gets adjusted and while you have no idea if the siren will be able to hear you scream – you'd rather not risk it.
White hot pain pulses out of your shoulder as you extend the arm to raise it above your head, your vision blurring as you slowly reach for your opposite shoulder behind your head. It hurts, gods, it hurts, but you have to do this. You release a muffled scream as the dislocated bone finally pops back into place, cold sweat dripping down your temple as you tremor with pain. You lay there, harshly panting through the cloth in your mouth, until the hurt subsides to only an ache.
You wince as you push yourself off the hard stone, spitting out your shirt to release a labored breath. Your body feels battered and bruised, completely worn down from all the horrors you've been through in the past six or so hours. You have no idea if you even have enough energy to make it across the lake, the distance probably greater than it looks, but what other alternative do you have?
Just as you're about to get off the ground, the sound of a soft splash echoes between the mountain walls. You jerk, heart skipping a painful beat in your chest as you frantically scan the water. You freeze when you notice how the surface is rippling much closer than expected, only a third of the lake between you and the waves that are parting around a dark shadow.
Out of instinct, your hand falls to your hip, searching for your knife. Your fingers only grip around air, the smooth handle nowhere to be found. In your panic, it takes you a second too long to remember that you held it as you fell from the ship, the knife probably lost somewhere at the bottom of the passage.
You scramble back on the rock as the creature's outline becomes visible, hands reaching out blindly behind your back for anything that can be used as a weapon.
You falter, blood running cold, as pale arms suddenly reach out of the water, planting themselves square on the edge of the rock. The siren heaves himself up without any issues, resting his back against one of the larger stones that's lining the flat extension of the cave. Water drips off his body like sparkling crystals in the morning light, giving a healthy glow to his otherwise almost sickly white skin. His long black hair hangs like a curtain in front of his face, the strands reaching far past his back, dipping into the water.
Patches of scales litter his arms and abdomen; a long fin running down the length of his spine. You find it hard to believe your own eyes as you stare at his stomach, at the area where the creature's human-like qualities disappear completely and transitions into that of a fish. His tail is long and thick, dreadfully similar to a serpent in the way it undulates on the rock as the water slowly evaporates from its scales. The slight movement allows the sun to dance across the siren's tail, showing off the iridescent glow that was hidden by the dark night. The sight leaves you transfixed, hues of colors you've only seen in the sky shimmering across his body.
Your attention is only stolen away when the creature raises one of his hands, his webbed fingers and pointed, long nails looking like they've been dipped in black ink. He runs his claws through his hair, parting the long locks that've been hiding his face.
You jerk back, swallowing thickly, when you find that the siren is already staring in your direction. His eyes are just as dark and emotionless as you can recall from the night before, two endless pools of black. The lack of a discernible pupil is unnerving, it makes it all that much harder to tell just where the creature is really looking. Long lashes frame his haunting eyes and the perfect slope of his nose leads down to the plushest, red lips you've ever seen.
You feel yourself pale as he opens his mouth, those horrible sharp teeth becoming visible as he calmly says, "Your knife is long gone, human." The siren dips his head slightly, looking at the way your hand is still resting near your hip, desperate for the familiar comfort of your knife.
What?
Your mouth parts in disbelief, brain slow to compute the fact that the creature just spoke, out loud, with a voice that sounded eerily human and ordinary.
"Can you not talk, pet? I swear I heard your sweet voice refusing me when the moon was high."
"I-I can," You stumble over your words, tongue twisting in your mouth under the siren's watchful gaze.
"Wonderful!" Something pleased passes over his face, his fin hitting the water with an excited splash. The loud sound makes you flinch, droplets spraying up on the rock just shy of your legs. The corner of the siren's lips quirks at your reaction, as if he finds it funny.
It reminds you of the way your crew used to look at street dogs, their expressions taunting and terrible as they made them do tricks for scraps of food.
It's cheap entertainment, they always used to tell you.
You can't help but wonder if that's what you are – mere entertainment for the siren until he decides to stop playing with his food.
The thought makes you furious. The mocking twist of his lips gives you a sudden rush of defiance, your rebellious nature rearing its head despite the dangerous predator right in front of you. Perhaps there might have been some truth to what your captain always liked to say – you never quite learned when to back down and keep quiet.
You breathe in slowly through your nose, attempting to calm your racing heart as you say, "How are you speaking a language I understand?"
"Easy. Humans are simple creatures and so are their languages," He answers, cocking his head.
"What are you, then?" You blurt, "Parts of you look human and the rest does not. Were you cursed?"
Like the flip of a coin, the siren's expression turns hard, offended, at the insinuation that he might be human. He jerks forward, lips pulling back to reveal his sharp teeth as he lets out a terrible hiss. The sight sends all the alarm bells inside of you blaring, your shoulder screaming in protest as you collapse backward, using your elbows to drag yourself further inside the cave.
"I am not a fragile human," He scoffs, turning his head to glance out on the lake. He flexes his tail to deliver another harsh smack to the water surface, the sound bouncing between the walls of crater. "Have you not heard stories, little human? Of creatures blessed with qualities of the sea and land?"
It takes you a moment to regain your voice, fear making it tremble as you carefully say, "Do you mean mermaids?"
"Correct, pet," He hums, "I see you're not completely hopeless."
You dig your nails into flat rock, voice tight as you ask, "What about the singing? You.. you made everyone jump. I didn't know mermaids could do that."
The siren looks wistful as tips his head back to face the sun. He closes his eyes with a small sigh, "Life becomes tedious when you stay in the same place for too long. I needed something new, so I left my brothers for colder water after hearing about these great big things that moved through the oceans there. Hm... I wonder if the ships have managed to reach them yet, it must be close to fifty humans years since I left."
You blink, shocked that the siren is well over twice your age. He looks young, definitely not a day older than you, but you suppose creatures like him must age at a different rate. Clearly the world is much different from what you first thought – slow aging is likely the least fantastical thing out there to discover.
"The ships lost their charm quickly," He adds, "But the humans on-board were fascinating. They called out to each other in melodies, both happy and sad as they sailed through my home. I was alone here at first, few of my kind dared to venture into colder climates, so the humans were all I had for company. It took me many human years to reshape my throat but I eventually learned to mimic their sounds. After that it was easy to learn the most common tongues that passed through my water."
"One day a ship of humans heard me singing and came looking for the source instead of passing me by – that was when I realized it was a wonderful way to lure you in. Your species have always been much too curious for your own good," The sun catches on the siren's teeth as he grins, highlighting the rows of fangs lining his mouth.
You shudder, stomach turning at how easily he speaks of the hundreds, if not thousands, of people he must have murdered over the years.
"Many moons passed and I grew tired of playing with my food. I found a sea witch – awfully slippery creatures – that gave me part of her magic, making it possible for me to enthrall humans from a greater distance. She was of great help, quite tasty too."
You can only stare at him in silence, lips pressed together tightly to hold back the acid burning at the back of your throat.
"I believe you humans created a name for me – to ward off others from crossing my path," He cocks his head, expectant, as he sends you a side-ways look.
"You're a siren," You whisper, pulling yourself back another inch.
"The one and only, pet," He purrs. "Though, I would prefer that you would utter my real name over something made up. Try saying Seokjin for me, little human."
You'd rather force your shoulder back into its socket a hundred times before complying to a monster's wishes, but it isn't exactly a request you can refuse.
 So you grit your teeth, forcing out a stilted, "S-Seokjin."
Disgust curls deep in your stomach as the siren's tail once again quivers back and forth, seemingly pleased with your acquiescence.
You look across the lake at the unmoving mountain, mustering up the courage to ask the question that's been at the forefront of your mind ever since you woke up. "What happened to my crew?" You ask weakly, "Are any of them still alive?"
"No."
The answer comes easily, no hint of remorse or guilt in the siren's voice.
You can feel your nails ache and splinter against the rock as you scrape them across the surface, desperate for something to hold on to as you say, "Did you ... Did you eat them?"
"Of course. Do you expect me to starve?" Seokjin replies impassively, "You humans hunt your food too, I've seen how you use those rope contraptions to gather up fish."
You knew there was little chance of other survivors, but the confirmation still feels like a shock. Your vision swims, hot tears burning your eyes as unwelcome images of your crew – your captain – eaten by the very creature in front of you, flashes across your mind.
"We don't hunt other humans! Nothing this close to our own species!" You cry, voice rising with anger as grief twists itself around your heart. Your crew might not have been much, but they were still the closest thing you had to a family – a home.
Seokjin looks unmoved by your outburst, bored almost, as he says, "Pet, this is how the ocean works. Do you lecture fish when they eat their smaller brethren? Species do not matter. It's either kill or die here."
"Then why am I alive?" You ask, swallowing thickly around the lump in your throat.
The siren seems to perk up your question, scales glistening as he straightens up against the rock. He finally turns his head to face to you fully, his dark eyes sparkling with excitement. "See, little human, now you're finally asking the right thing. I find you fascinating – I haven't had a human pique my interest in many moons. I want to know how you managed to resist me for that long, why my thrall isn't as effective on you. What makes you so different from all the other humans that have jumped so willingly into my water?"
A foreboding sense of unease washes over you as Seokjin speaks, every muscle in your body tensing with fear. The siren wants to study you? The only way he can do that is to continue to use his thrall - his voice - and make you do things you do not want to do. He can force you to present your limbs for nibbling and you'll be none the wiser until it's too late.
"I don't know," You shake your head, "I-I didn't even know you existed until last night!"
"How disappointing," Seokjin clicks, the flicker of emotion on his face once again melting away to nothing. "Well then, pet, as expected, it seems you will be staying here until my curiosity is sated."
"What?" You clamber to your knees, gripping them tightly to keep yourself from doing something as humiliating as bowing – begging – the awful creature in front of you for an ounce of humanity that he clearly does not have.
"You can't do that, I can't stay here!"
"Then jump in the water and see how long you last," Seokjin once again flicks his strong tail, the harsh smack sending a tremble down your spine.
The siren's lips part into a something akin to a twisted smile, his blood speckled teeth making you sick as he hums, "Your thighs look delectable, little human, and I am quite prone to an early morning snack. So unless you want to watch as I eat you alive, you better stay put."
There's a minuscule quirk to his brows, a challenge, as he watches you absorb his words. Seokjin doesn't wait for you to give him an answer, your stunned silence more than enough for him. He doesn't spare you another glance as he pushes himself off the rock, effortlessly jumping back into the lake. It only takes a few seconds, a couple of strong flaps of his fin, before he disappears from view and his dark tail is nowhere to be seen.
You find yourself frozen to the spot, unable to move as you stare mindlessly at the spot Seokjin entered the water. The harsh ripples dancing over the surface is the only proof you have that you haven't lost your mind, that all of this is actually real.
Pressing your hands to your face, you finally allow your body to break, to mourn, as you release pained sobs into your palms. Everything hurts. Your body, your mind, your heart. You have no idea how you're going to escape to the mountain on the other side, and even if you do, then what? The siren can just use his song to lure you back down.
Seokjin has made the situation very clear. You can try to cross the lake and dive straight into your own grave, or you let him do what he wants. Either way – you fear it won't take long before the siren makes good on his promise.
You don't doubt it'll amuse him to make you watch as he tears you apart, piece by piece.
