Me, watching my mutuals go nuts over a fic that has kinks that I'm squicked by:
"You guys have fun, you horny little feral gremlins you. You do you."

Nuance is something that can be soooo hard for online spaces to hold onto. Hell, offline spaces too, for that matter. Today I'm thinking about kink and the concept of kinkshaming, when I think about nuance: that people should be allowed to enjoy and engage with kink, especially in fictional and fandom spaces where even bad kink etiquette can't actually harm anyone should be a given. Personally, as long as someone is tagging correctly and creating with self awareness, anything goes in a fictional space, you do you, your content deserves to exist online. I have personally created a variety of kinky works, both publicly available and not, and would really not have a leg to stand on trying to declare otherwise. In a time where people are cracking down heavily on kink and trying to decry it as deviance that shouldn't exist, being kink positive can be a very important, good thing.
At the same time though, the people have squicks, and when it comes to kink and a good culture towards sex in general, people have to be allowed to have squicks. If anyone's hearing the term for the first time, a squick is essentially a concept that just grosses you right out, you do not want to see it, you do not want to learn more, maybe it even distresses you to see it, but not to the extent that you would consider ot triggering content. A couple of common tend to bodily excrement: piss and shit, alongside guro (extensive bodily mutilation combined with sexual imagery). A squick doesn't have to be extreme, it doesn't have to be unusual, it's just something that grosses an individual out, and they don't want to see it. (And because this is tumblr and it must be said: no, racism is not a squick.)
Sometimes, we lean so heavily into the negative that we refuse to allow positivity. Sometimes, we get so into positivity, that we refuse to acknowledge negatives. People are allowed to talk about their squicks. If people see something that grosses them out, they don't have to shut up about it just because it's someone else's kink. Kinkshaming, the idea that someone would go up to someone else and tell them they're gross for their kink, is something people shouldn't do in general. But expressing disgust and distaste for a kink in general isn't kinkshaming - that's just talking about your squick.
Your Kink Is Not My Kink And That's Okay is about not hating on other people or demanding their works not exist because you hate the kink, not pretending that you find every kink, fetish, or sexual concept totally wonderful and would never react with disgust towards one. This idea in fandom that if you don't like something you should never say anything publicly because what if someone does like that thing, and is upset that you publicly don't like that thing, is ridiculous, and it has been for a while. Negative emotions have a place in fandom, especially in regard to sexual content. You shouldn't harass people who share a kink (especially when their content is tagged this is why everyone should read the tags) - but you also shouldn't go around saying people aren't allowed to use their own online space to process their disgust.
I've been seeing a lot of people lately saying anyone discussing how much they dislike a kink concept is just a kinkshamer, an anti, the purity police, and it's getting beyond ridiculous. We have the right to engage in kink, to write about kink, to make kinky art, create audio for it, and to in general delight in all kinds of kinky works. We also have the responsibility to make sure we're tagging correctly. Others have the right to dislike kink, including our own kinks, and to talk about how much they dislike those kinks. They have the responsibility to make sure they're curating correctly, that they're reading the tags and warnings on a work, and that they work out their negative responses in their own space.
Multiple things can be true: kink is a great way to explore sexuality and desire and a wide range of topics. people deserve to share their interest in kink without harassment or being belittled. one person's joy can be another person's squick. people deserve to share their squick without harassment or being belittled.

Seeing people have to justify why childhood friends to lovers can evolve into something where they physically express attraction without being raunchy or distasteful is the craziest thing I’ve seen come out of the fandom internet in a long while I won’t lie

I don't understand the concept of pro shippers and antis. Like I have some ships that are really problematic and some that aren't. Like I get people hating certain things like, I have certain things that I don't like. Am I weird though? For it? Cause I have some weird ships. Age gap doesn't really bother me. Especially if they fictional. Or like cartoon characters. In live action things I get if if the characters were actually kid actors. That I get. But most of the time I'm just shipping the adult actors with who their characters are playing am I making sense? Most of the time for cartoons and shows they usually have adults playing the characters. So why is it a big deal to write smut or other stuff? I don't know. Am I making sense or is their something wrong with me? Just all this pro and anti stuff just makes me paranoid and my ocd bad. Like am I bad? I don't see myself as either cause I feel lik it's broad a term.
I'm with you. These concepts didn't exist when I entered fandom. I'm still trying to figure things out.
All I know is that the phrase "these turtles are underage and brothers" is something I never expected to see with my own eyes from when the antishippers infested the Ninja Turtles fandom. I got accused of being complicit in pedophilia and threatened with a purging or whatever they thought would scare me. This is a fandom based on a parody, with animal humanoids that barely have human type biologies, let alone ones that can be compared to humans. Do you understand how ridiculous this sounds? I just typed it and I'm completely baffled.
From what I gather, the anti side is desperate for control over something, anything, and flailing for the flimsiest straws they can grasp. The pro side appears to be chilling, playing with fictional representations of the human (ish) condition, occasionally declaring little wars over which ship is better. Really fun analytical threads. Sometimes I feel squicked by a ship or a theme, so I stop reading.
And the neutrals - I guess that's me - are standing off to the side passing around popcorn.
*hands you popcorn*
In conclusion, I have no goddamn clue, but I'm here for the ride.
(But I will say this: I will write that poly smut fic one day and damned if a whiny threat from a miserable teenager halfway across the country will give me pause.)

Big supporter of people writing/drawing/making what they want and staying in their own lane. If you don’t like what you see around you, then make up for that by creating what you would like to see. Instead of dragging others down for their own creative processes or subject matter leanings, maybe dabble in creation yourself in your own time. Trying to shape and mold other people into your own liking is counterproductive to the creative processes in fandom spaces. Eventually, you will find yourself very alone. You will find your space by curating it to your needs through sharing what you love, blocking what you do not. You will find your group eventually through that simple process. The sooner you stop yourself in taking others’ creations as an attack against you, the more at peace you will be. Just a thought.

"This post makes a great blocklist" has done awful things to my psyche. Why do I keep wasting what builds up to hours of my time reading all of this dumb shit just to block people?? It's block and move on, not black and move and block and move and block and move and-
#'if you have an alt account that's because you have something to hide'#'why would you put your gross stuff with your good stuff???'#pick one bitch#'seeing that is triggering to me' okay valid me too#'but if I interacted with someone who happens to like it on their down time I want people to bring it up to me asap'#good for you I guess?? if you bring up my triggers when I am talking about something I like I will bite your head off!!#'fictional gross stuff is gross' 'kill yourself irl'#do#do you hear yourself?#the idea that people genuinely believe it's fine and okay to harass and bully people irl but it's not okay to quietly Make Weird Art is so#o.O#I don't want to see it so I block tags! I filter! I mind my own business!#'I happened to stumble upon an alt account that triggered me-'#I mean this lovingly (no I don't)#where were you that you accidentally found an account with content that triggers you and it JUST SO HAPPENED to bear similarity to a#completely different account...?#assuming that the alt accusation is in good faith- that's a lot of research to put yourself through just to make yourself uncomfortable#assuming that you just saw it and clicked away like anyone seeing trigger/squick content would how would you even KNOW that's an actual alt#and then it just goes back to the 'people put stuff you don't want to see somewhere you don't have to see it'#if they put it somewhere else they're hiding it but if they put it alongside their other stuff they're promoting or glorifying it#I don't need to touch grass I need to touch that unfinished fic I left in the summer of 2019

Are you pro or anti ship/kink/fic?
Proship: I believe people should not be abused, called "freaks," or told to die over the fiction they consume/create and the ships they enjoy, period.
If you have a problem with that, then this isn't the blog for you.

In regard to that squicks vs. triggers post - I didn’t want to tl;dr the already long post, so I will just say what I was thinking here.
I have been extremely lucky in my life that I have no triggers that I can identify. Nothing that would produce a physical reaction beyond a shudder or a wince or covering my eyes in the case of a horror film, etc. Nothing that would throw me into a mental spiral or a bad memory. If I do have anything that could be considered a trigger, it doesn’t appear often enough to make itself known.
But boy howdy, I have squicks. There are ships whose dynamics I consider squicky. There are plenty of fiction tropes that squick me, from common fandom explorations to seriously dark stuff. And I mute liberally to avoid seeing that content.
But the last thing I’m going to do is pass judgment on anyone who does enjoy that content. For one thing, as we’ve had to say to antis over and over and over, what people enjoy in fiction is never a one-on-one parallel to what they enjoy or do in real life. For another, tastes change. There are some things that I would have considered squicks twenty years ago when I first got into online fandom, but don’t now. There are things that I still consider a bit squicky, but will read from authors whose style I know.
And I am especially not going to tell anyone that the way they enjoy their fiction is wrong. If you are not attacking others over what they do in fan content, no matter what it’s about, then you are a pro-shipper. Doesn’t matter what your personal tastes are; the key element is that you leave others alone if you disagree with them.
Tag your content, let others know what it’s about, and let people ship whatever they want.

at the time I thought, and in general I still think, that it was a good thing when fandom moved away from calling all discourse “wank”. it was a dismissive label, that was the whole point, and I can’t count how many times I saw it used to try and shut down/minimize the importance of serious and necessary conversations about racism, ableism, misogyny, etc. but I also think it should make a partial comeback, because let’s be real, many of the arguments we have in fandom are very stupid and they absolutely deserve a dismissive label.

ooh romantic reunion,,,,please tell us about when Obi-Wan finally returns to his family!
ok.....so i think a typical obi-wan returns to his family.....features every member of it routinely, specifically anakin the most though, going for walks from the manor to the beach every day to see if obi-wan's ship is in the harbor......
i imagine that anakin is taking a walk towards the beach in the evening (kids all back at home, watching each other because the twins are old enough now to be left in charge of their many younger siblings), and he breaks through the treeline to see obi-wan's ship in harbor and he just starts running. He'd absolutely start wading into the water against the waves to reach the rowboat that is Obi-Wan faster.
The rowboat is, of course, weighed down with treasure they can sell because Obi-Wan Provides (tm), but anakin jumps into the boat as soon as he puts his hands on the edge, not even caring about tipping the treasure into the water. he just wants---he just needs to be in obi-wan's arms as soon as he can.
this would absolutely lead to rowboat sex, halfway between the shore and the ship.
obi-wan is like 'omega, omega, careful of the treasure!!!' and anakin, whose greatest treasure is currently in his arms for the first time in months, absolutely snarls and bites him.

So guys, how about that lack of season two of ofmd. Really strange how the episodes haven't released huh?/s Gee i sure hope they don't completely flip the scrip and commit hate-crimes and genocide. That is so unthinkable considering their love from the first season. No problematic history at all./s
That would certainly build up a lot of bad blood for the queer fans of the show, especially the ones who are poc./srs
Oh well, i guess we'll find out whenever it releases but maybe it won't and us fans will have to write season 2 ourselves./hj It'd sure be a shame if it ended up like the eragon, percy jackson or atla movie where all the fans pretend it didn't exist and ignore anything from the writers and directors trying to defend their shitty thinking and lack of accountability/s
On a completely unrelated note/s, if anyone wants to create a big project with animatics/acting/art/fanfic/zines or more where we make season 2 of a certain (completely unrelated/s) series how it should have been done, then hit me up and let's chat/srs /gen (cautiously)/pos

People who are obsessed with wanting Cinder to be violently punished/killed give me the squicks but people who are obsessed with Cinder's victimhood and turning her into a little squishy whump puppet scare me just as much.
Both objectify her and want her powerless in different ways. Sorry it just makes me so uncomfortable and I hate it so much, I don't really care if it offends peoples' personal tastes or desires they project onto the narrative, both approaches are equally uninteresting... and my own squick.
For the record, I'm never writing from the direction that Cinder's a helpless victim and will be that way forever, and I'm never writing about Knightfall from a perspective that excludes Jaune or excludes any of the character influence on the narrative. I think that's the key difference though because you can empathise with Cinder without denying her agency and wanting her empowered.
