Oh Heatherwax, hi!!!! How've you been? I've missed your asks! 😘

I mean... Canon has established since day 1 that Beth has a blatant death wish, oh yea please do go on, shoot me, let's see what happens, BUT, somehow she spends the entirety of the series claiming that she's a mother, I'm doing this for my family, for us, blah blah blah, so the dream sequence feels like an acknowledgment, finally, of what Beth really seeks out of this?

To be fair it's a little too on the nose that she then decides to call off Nevada, but this show has never exactly been super subtle, y'know?

Anyway I really like that she so earnestly admits that she kinda wants to die, her life makes her want to die, and I like how it's then echoed in ghost!Fitzpatrick's little speech, because he saw that in her right from the start, just like Rio did, and also it ties in with the line about dying if she has to make another cookie or something, which is something she says around the end of season 4 too if I remember correctly?

So I guess that what I'm trying to say is that since Fitzpatrick was introduced, there's been this slow arc of Beth coming to terms with the fact that crime has been a matter of survival at this point, because this perfect housewife life is slowly killing her, and that is not a temporary phase, and that this darkness that she has in her and draws her towards danger and death isn't a fad either but who she is, and it all culminates in the dream sequence because it's pretty much the first time she admits it out loud? (except for the cookie line but it was said in the tone of a joke)

And the reason I'm mentioning Fitz is that he's been portrayed as an evil version of her somehow, and he's kept telling her that they were the same, which makes him some sort of a script personification that's here only to hit Beth repeatedly in the head with the truth until she actually admits it.

Although I must say that most of the show and especially season 4 is very blurry in my mind, so maybe I'm garbling complete nonsense here, who knows 😅

So far looks like hitman's gonna be in love triangle bt gotta be honest if that's the case then for me feels less like love triangle & more: Rio/Beth & Fitzpatrick who makes her uncomfortable. Like it'll be hard for me to see her get interested in that man. I don't wear heart tinted glasses, am aware that Rio ain't innocent, crime & so on. Bt SUPER hard seeing him beat up a chef over food. Like Rio ain't giving off Murder Karen vibes that Fitzpatrick does, that ain't attractive. Dark triangle?

Oh, I definitely agree that if (emphasis on if! I’m still not convinced, haha) the love triangle is between Rio, Beth and Fitzpatrick it’ll be less a ‘love’ triangle than a dark and blurry obsession triangle. 

I don’t see Beth becoming interested in Fitzpatrick at all – even before the scene at dinner in 4.02, the show hadn’t teased any interest in him on Beth’s part outside of the job that needed doing, and I can’t see that changing, especially after Fitzpatrick assaulted the chef. Beth’s a lot of things, but even when she’s been established as being attracted to Rio being violent, it’s never when that violence is aimed at a person.

She got off to Rio smashing the car windows at the end of 2.04/start of 2.05, a scene that’s also tied to Rio re-entering her business, and, importantly, still respecting her wishes when she asked him not to tell Dean about the affair when he clearly wanted to. That, to me, is as clear an indication as any about the sort of grey area that Beth and Rio exist in together – she likes his violence only when it’s symbolic – the corvette being Dean’s ego, her bedroom decor her old life – and likes it best of all when it’s tied up with basic respect as well as their powerplays and games.

It feels different with Rio, because on the whole, it is different. Rio, for all his faults – which are many – has only been depicted as behaving badly when the stakes are high, and that violence has had a purpose. I broke down the different types of male violence on the show here if you’re interested, but I’d add to that that in some ways, Fitzpatrick represents the antithesis of Rio.

His violence is meaningless, frivolous, and purchasable, and he can’t even respect Beth enough to do the job she’s paying him for, or her taste with not wanting to eat the radish.

It’s potentially an interesting area to explore given it could really force a bigger distinction in Beth’s head as to her relationship not just with Rio, but crime and violence in general, something I think we already saw in 4.02 with Beth calling Mick off Dave.

Me too!  He’s just the right amount of snark and unsolicited judgment that I love in characters - plus he’s handsome you know?  And amazingly he’s probably become one of my favorite new characters in season three (although I wish they parlayed his role from hitman to like secretly being the head of a rival gang but that’s a whole different thing haha).

@fairhairedkings joked that he should play couples counselor with Beth and Rio when this whole thing is done, really force them to address their issues and show them how stupid they both are.

like let’s pause for a sec and examine the situation shall we? this ep provides some really interesting contrast between beth’s extremely different relationships with the men in her life.

1. we have dean who is, i would argue, shown throughout the ep to be a complete albatross of guilt and long expired, turned toxic gratitude dangling from a rapidly fraying thread called parenting. he’s furious with beth to the point of not wanting to see her while in prison, choosing to stay in prison to avoid coping with how thoroughly their house of cards is tumbling down and the reality of who beth is and who they are to each other that collapse is exposing. 2. we have fitzpatrick who repeatedly tramples her boundaries in a tunnel vision pursuit of the person he thinks she is and his fantasy of the relationship he could have with this person who doesn’t actually exist and we’ve seen how uncomfortable it makes beth to the point that she finally blows up at him, reasserting who she is and it, idk if i would say scares him, but it definitely turns him off. 3. and then we have rio who she is locked in a nightmare game of cat and mouse with, who she has convinced herself is the source of all of her problems and yet when push comes to shove is still the person that she turns to for guidance and support, who she has no objection to sharing physical space with (i hear rumors the pool scene reads wildly divide and yeah i can see how but i am firmly camp they are both experiencing some stupidly complicated emotional upheaval and that’s what that face is, y’all take it how you will), who is also the only person this ep to witness the single, genuine, uncomplicatedly happy glimpse of one elizabeth boland née marks (who can’t help but grin in response to her joy and honestly who wouldn’t she is so gd cUte before he rips the rug out from underneath her)

I’ll be honest, I can’t help but be positive? Like, I have fun when they’re together and I don’t see that stopping for me so it’s probably going to always be happy and positive comments from me in regards to their overall story and parts of their dynamic/relationship, haha.

Now, of course, never say never but like, here’s the thing, he’s a literal hitman and I don’t expect this thing to be sunshine and rainbows and between Dean and Rio, Beth already has a lot to deal with. So even if Fitzpatrick’s behaviour gets more violent and disturbing and possibly creepy (or creepier lol), I’m expecting it as things that could happen, y’know? So I think it’s helping me to just enjoy their scenes as they’re happening and not worrying about where it could go.

So, I mean, if he crosses some lines into major creepy territory and possibly even gets Boomer level creepy and won’t take no for an answer and even goes as far as to attempt rape (which I personally don’t see happening) then, of course, it’ll change my opinion of him as a character but if it’s done right, I’ll still enjoy the heck out of their scenes but just in a different away. (Although, if I don’t like the direction Fitzpatrick and Beth go in, I probably just won’t talk about them/that storyline anymore unless I have something meaningful to say? Otherwise, it’s just not worth my energy, haha).

I do think, however, that we’re mostly going to get Fitzpatrick showing his interest and trying to impress Beth only to realise she’s really not into it or we’ll get a reveal that he knows Rio in some way and either version will lead to a big fallout and some trouble for Beth. I mean, I would love to see Fitzpatrick go off the rails and turn into Beth’s enemy, especially after seeing how calm he was in that kitchen scene because it was so good to watch!!

But regardless of whether things go in that direction or not, I think there’s still a ton of interesting things that could happen in the meantime! I loved that Fitzpatrick talked about crossing and moving lines you normally wouldn’t cross and how he called Beth out on not knowing what normal is. And yeah, Rio has basically done this (especially the latter), and Annie and Ruby have constantly brought up how Beth can’t get out of crime/can’t stand normal life again, and hell, even Dean has but I think having yet another person notice that side of her will only push Beth closer to finally crossing some serious lines and fully accepting that side of herself now. I think it’s also a big deal to consider that Fitzpatrick is the second criminal (with a presumably long career) who has basically said she doesn’t fit into her old life, haha.

I don’t know, anon, like I said, I just enjoy them and have fun watching their scenes and I think there’s potential for even more great moments that will show a change in their dynamic but also as characters. I also quite like Fitzpatrick as a character and Beth shares the top spot (with Rio) as my fave character so that makes it even better :)

Also, I’ve been saying (somewhat jokingly) for a while now that I’d be down for Beth and Fitzpatrick to kiss and have sex and while I doubt it’ll happen, be sure to catch me screaming and never shutting up about it if it happens (under the right circumstances), haha.

I LOVE that Dean's first question after inquiring about the kids is whether Rio's involved or not. This man is OBSESSED with Rio. Even from jail his thoughts fly to him, little butterflies of hope in this cruel world...

Okay, so the pool table scene. With my shipper's googles on? Love it. BUT objectively? Beth is NOT into it. At all. It doesn't have the same flirty energy as any Brio scene from seasons 1 and 2. It could have been Fitzpatrick instead of Rio she'd have pulled the same face. I hate to say it but this scene has more to do with sexual harrassment than sexy banter.

That being said, Rio is an absolutely petty little bitch for having lured Beth into that bet which wasn't one and I'm into it.

So this is a menial detail but I find hilarious that Ben's half-crumpet or whatever this pastry is just disappears. One minute you see him holding it, he doesn't take a new bite, and on the next broader frame his hands are empty. SORCERY!

So I played drink up every time Beth Boland said "I have kids/I'm a mom" in this episode. It was a mistake.

This Fitzpatrick scene is fucking weird, like it's so oddly paced it doesn't land anywhere.

Kalamazoo or not, I find it super weird that Kenny didn't come back to visit his father in fucking PRISON... (I know that the actor was probably unavailable but the justification was lame af)

Um, excuse me, but the secret services were supposed to SEARCH Boland Bubbles, not trash everything? This office looks like it's been robbed more than searched by the police, I’m pretty sure that the Boland could actually sue them for reparation -- they broke the CRYSTAL WHALE FFS!!!!!

Oh my God, Beth's incriminating letter from two eps ago was actually incriminating, I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay. So now, let's check every character's situation at the beginning and the ending of that episode. Dean's still in prison, Eric's still at his aunt's, Beth's still vaguely guilting but mostly wandering around visiting Dean, Annie's still miserable about her kid, Ruby still doesn't have a storyline of her own, Phoebe's still looking for actual evidence, Rio's still mumbling in the background, and Fitzpatrick is still not doing his job. Yes, exactly. Nothing. Happened.

Beth x Dean x Judith Background Theory

Figured I’d post this one too, because it ties in to the theory about Judith dying and why I think Judith played an important role in Beth marrying Dean and will, ultimately, play a role in Beth finally leaving. Literally don’t expect anyone to read these, it’s just so I have a way to say “I told you so” when if any of them come true.

Contrary to popular belief, I don’t think Beth ended up with Dean as a means to find the stability she wasn’t getting at home - I don’t think it was a case of Dean providing something that she needed, at least not from a safety and security perspective. It doesn’t seem as though she was physically attracted to him from the get go, but from what we’ve seen, I don’t think financial security was the draw either.

It doesn’t seem like he grew up above middle-class and he certainly wasn’t wealthy when they got married - in 2.13 (I think) her and Dean were reminiscing about the early days of their marriage, and they spoke about the shitty apartment they first moved into. Which means he didn’t really have anything to offer her in the beginning.

Essentially, if she was looking for the financial stability she didn’t have growing up, I don’t think she would’ve chosen Dean. I think it was more about the fantasy of a life that she thought she wanted.

However, I don’t think her chasing that fantasy was born out of desperation and poverty, but more about the way that people were raised back then and what a girl her age would picture as the perfect life. It’s the classic All-American family setup: white picket fence, house in the suburbs, family business and a bunch of kids.

If her mother was depressed, like the 2.08 flashbacks suggest, I think she would’ve been more likely to look at Judith as a role model, not wanting to be like her mom, and aspired to have that kind of life thinking, in typical teenage naivete, that Judith’s “happiness” came as part of this lifestyle. Which is why the conversation in the kitchen in S3 about her job was so important - because she realised Judith was nerver really happy and actually, she doesn’t wanna be Judith. I think that realisation will play a role in her finally leaving Dean. 

I think the reason she ignored the cheating ties in to this as well (I feel like it was pretty clear from the dumpster argument that Beth was at least subconsciously aware of Deans infidelities before the pilot episode). Because if she acknowledged he’s been cheating on her for years, and that she was never in love with him, she would have to acknowledge that she wasted her whole life with him, gave up the opportunity to get a degree, have a career, live a fulfilling life - all to chase after a life that he never even provided her with, a life she never truly wanted.  

I feel like that’s what she was getting at during her conversation with Fitzpatrick, when she described her life as a series of missed opportunities.
