Lately I've been thinking about how self-hating is such a huge component of CEE identity. There's always been this shared sentiment between me and my friends, whether they were Ukrainian, Czech, Polish or other, that we were always ashamed of where we came from and uncomfortable with sharing our identity with people who were English/American/French/Spanish/German/Russian and proud. But now it's got me thinking: what exactly were those people proud of that we couldn't be? Their history is drenched with blood - colonialism, slavery, genocide, imperialism, world wars etc. more than ours. The cultures that they're so proud of are mostly relevant because they've been backed by military might and forcibly spread across the globe.
Meanwhile we've been forced to endure hundreds of years of oppression, whether by Russia or Austria-Hungary or Germany etc. They've tried to russify, magyarise or germanise us and we survived. So why, in the so-called free 21st century, are we still made to feel so ashamed of ourselves and our roots?
Because the talks about post-colonialism and inclusivity are nothing but empty virtue signaling and the world is still ruled by the old power, methinks.
And if power only comes coupled with financial prosperity, then that is what we should do. People speculate that the real reason why some NATO members are so reluctant on accepting Ukraine is because they are afraid we're going to enforce the so-called Warsaw pact countries and shift the power from Germany-France-Brinain eastwards. And, in this case, I think that's exactly what we should do. If we focus on financial and political cooperation instead of competition, we could move towards the reality where it wouldn't matter what those Western Europeans think of us. And where money go, popular culture will follow.
Btw, if you don't mind me nitpicking, but I find your usage of words "ashamed from where we came from" a great illustration of what is the root of the problem you're talking about. Shame is a social emotion, you don't feel shame unless it's been taught to you. Westerners have created this dichotomy of them being superior to us, and they have softly forced us to internalise it. Like in the nietzschean dichotomy of the slave and the master, they need us more than we need them; because without us feeling ashamed for being CEE they wouldn't be able to feel superior. But this is an illusion. A social construct. The naked king. No country is better than another (expect for russia, which is the worst). So break free and embrace everything that makes you you.

Wahhhhhh
The tldr is my boss couldn't go to this meeting today so I got sent to represent our archive, and I was the only archivist there in a group of professors and PhD students (whose research is tangentially related to the contents of the archive) and I'm just ahhhh
On the one hand, it was great, sitting around a table talking research for a few hours over lunch, it's all the best parts of grad school seminars and I've missed having those kinds of discussions IMMENSELY and it feels like a missing piece of myself has been returned. Even just from mostly listening for the duration.
On the other hand. The sense of imposter syndrome not being a Real Academic. And the sense of loss and regret. Yes yes I didn't go for my PhD because health, finances, awful job prospects for classicists. But I LOVED grad school. I love my MA and learning and studying and being a student. I miss it terribly, even though I'm good at and enjoy my profession.
Even had health/finances not been a concern, I'd never have been able to decide on a focused research topic for a dissertation. My interests are too broad. They're not even limited to classics. I'm bouncing between life changing academic interests constantly, and each one is foundational and obsessive, in its own way. I joked to Atlas this week that I was supposed to be born a foppish renaissance dilettante, but it's not even really a joke.
I know. I KNOW. My unlived lives aren't real. They shouldn't haunt me. The me that exists is de facto the best version of me because it's the ONLY me that exists. And life doesn't have to be perfect it just has to be Good. And it is good. But also. Why can't I be a full-time student just learning, never having to publish, but also an archivist and information professional, but also a mutual aid volunteer and praxis oriented person, and Also have time for hobbies like crafting and novel reading and video games, and things like cooking and gardening and strength training.
I'm aware that harmonizing and coming to peace with the multitudinous aspects of the self is the work of a lifetime but also I want it to happen /now/

Reposting is so grrrrrr. I just saw some artist get informed their art was reposted, so I went to stalk on Twitter to go see. And it hurts me so much, bcs the op's twt of the drawing has ~20 likes/5 retweets, and the repost has ~2.3k likes/300+ retweets. Is that not fucking evil?
That's why I will always be so outraged at reposting, so often it ends up that the repost gets way more attention. And yeah they often "credit," (usually in a follow up tweet not on the main repost ofc 🙄) but that does literally no good imo as people will always just up retweeting/liking the repost instead of making the effort to go to the original. Not that people shouldn't credit, bcs its just even worse that way, but idk, it always seemed to me like a bandage on a gaping wound lol

encouraging fans to not bring their flags and rainbow lights to his future shows because he blocked an UA is absolutely so fucking telling of where your priorities stand and your understanding and support for the fans, team, band members, louis, and anyone who might feel safe from those flags and lights. it also shows a good percentage of fans only brought those things for performative, fantasy reasons and has NOTHING to do with creating a safe space for anyone at his shows. fuck you.
and that’s what you get for making otb about anything except what it is to louis and what it is to lgbtq+ fans.
